And they love to be petted and get attention. They may jump, grab our hand or arm, or engage in some destructive behaviors. Normal Dog Behaviors Versus Abnormal Behaviors Dogs naturally dig, bark, express fear in certain situations, mark territory, chase small animals, and jump. They may steal food. Or want to be with us all the time. Goldens were bred to be sociable, high-energy dogs. My rescued golden Spencer almost always had to carry something in his mouth. So I made sure there were safe toys for him to happily tote around. Unfortunately, many dogs are given up to shelters because of behaviors that can be modified. To have a great companion takes a lot of work, patience, and time. And to meet those needs. These should be dealt with by behavior specialists who can evaluate the individual dog and determine the best behavior modification plan. These abnormal behaviors include aggression to those around the dog, obsessive-compulsive disorders, shutting down, and severe separation anxiety. Why Behavior Problems Develop There is no one reason why some behavior problems occur. Unfortunately, goldens are so popular—the third-popular breed ranked by the American Kennel Club—they are often poorly bred. There are too many back-yard and puppy mill dogs who are more likely to not be the examples of what the breed should be. Jumping on People Golden retrievers usually love everyone and never met a stranger. Goldens are the greeting committee of the dog world. Many dogs want to jump on people when greeting them. The golden can, of course, unintentionally injure someone, knocking them over in his exuberant greeting. Engaging in Destructive Behavior In addition to friendliness, goldens were bred to hunt. They have energy to spare. And they were bred to retrieve and have something in their mouths. They may dig up the garden. Or chew up our furniture. Or they may steal the food on the counter. And the food they eat may be toxic, such as chocolate or raisins. Or they may get a blockage from ingesting a towel or sock. A bored, under-exercised golden can get very creative in meeting his needs. They often need to have something in their mouths. That is, he may constantly try to hold our clothes, arm, or hand in his mouth. Biting is a natural canine behavior. But puppies should be taught bite-inhibition. And it can be dangerous. Someone can be badly bruised or even pulled down. Pulling on the Leash Goldens love to go places and greet all their new admirers. But they want to get there sooner rather than later. Many dogs pull on a leash, but not all are as friendly as goldens are known to be. And they can be lazer-focused on getting where they want to go. Being a rather large dog, a golden pulling on a leash can injure someone. An owner can be pulled down and get injured. Or the dog himself can get free and get lost or injured—or worse. Demanding Attention Because of their natural friendliness, goldens may want to be the center of attention. They are so family-oriented, they love to be with us. Some goldens may bark at you for attention. They may nudge you and grab your arm to be recognized. Some may even engage in unwanted behaviors like taking something off the table. Even negative attention is attention. Hyperactivity Some goldens seemingly bounce off the walls. They are like a hurricane passing through the living room. Tables are cleared of bric a brac. Pillows are shredded and on the floor. But your happy golden is furiously wagging his tail, looking for the next item he can use to help expel his excess energy. Separation Anxiety Because of their innate friendly, family-oriented behavior, goldens may suffer from separation anxiety at a higher rate than some other breeds. Their need to be with us can lead to some unwanted behaviors. Dogs with mild separation anxiety may drool, pace, whine, and generally behave in a distressed manner. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may become very destructive. They may try to get out of doors and windows, feverishly digging at door and window frames. They may even severely harm themselves in their attempts to get free. Dogs with separation anxiety may need professional behavioral help. We owe it to our goldens to do all that we can do to meet their natural needs. A bored, untrained, under-exercised, unsupervised golden is going to develop some problem behaviors. Some of the tips below will even help your golden from developing any of the potential problems cited above. I wrote the ways to help fix a problem separately from the problems because it will probably take more than one item to successfully change an unwanted behavior. All of the favorable interactions we have with our goldens also help further our bond with them. Physical Exercise Goldens were bred to hunt. They are highly-energetic dogs. Walks, fetching, jogging, agility, and swimming can all be great ways to physically exercise your golden. A vet check-up is advisable prior to starting any exercise program. Physical exercise can help decrease or eliminate the above-named problems. Of course, you want to exercise your dog enough but not over-tire them. Dogs who have been sufficiently exercised are less likely to jump or engage in destructive activities such as digging or chewing. Also, dogs who are exercised and calm before we leave are less likely to develop separation anxiety. Obedience Training Obedience training helps us communicate with our dogs and informs them what behaviors are desired. So we can teach them to sit before they receive attention. Or to lie down next to us and settle. And we can show him what toys he can put in his mouth rather than destroying items or turning us into his chew toy. Redirection works. And we can teach them to not pull on a leash and to walk on a loose leash. Part of the training should include how to leave your dog alone. This will help prevent separation anxiety from developing. Start with short sessions. Make leaving a happy opportunity—when great things appear. Leave a frozen, stuffed Extreme Kong with him as you leave. If your dog has already shown signs of separation distress, get the help of a qualified behavior specialists. As far as your golden inappropriately seeking attention is concerned, you can ignore your dog. Turn away or get up and leave. But do give him the attention he needs on your terms by calling him over to you occasionally. Pet him. Have him do a command or trick. Praise, pet, and treat. You should also play games with him. Teach him to tug a toy like a rope or long fleece to and give. You can have him play fetch. You can play hide-and-seek where you go and hide and call him to you. Make a big deal when he reaches you YES! Good boy! And not at all with a dog who has separation anxiety. But, to goldens, this is what they often enjoy most. Everyone is a potential friend. Goldens will thrive if they are fed the same times each day, are exercised as needed routinely, and receive attention from their people every day. No dog should be just put aside like a statue. Goldens especially need attention through positive daily interactions—play, training, exercise. If ignored, their sweet, golden personality will wilt. Maintenance: Subscription: Some software provides updates via a paid subscription. Patches: Depending on the nature of the software, there may be some effort in applying patches. This includes both testing and deployment. Development: Did you make any customizations yourself? Now you have to maintain those forever. Seeing how happy Claude was has really opened our eyes up to how French Bulldogs are better in pairs. Are 2 French Bulldogs better than one and in pairs? Frenchies will be happier when they have a companion dog; they keep each other company, exercise each other, and can be left alone for longer periods when in pairs. Having now seen how much happier he is with a companion; we are seriously considering getting a second French Bulldog. Why are two French Bulldogs better than one? Frenchies are social pack animals Dogs are descendants of wolves, an animal known for their pack mentality. This ancestral trait still exists in dogs today, and they prefer the security and comfort of being in a group. Dogs are social animals, and Frenchies especially so. French Bulldogs do get lonely and prefer to have a companion to spend time with. Pairs offer companionship, socialisation, and health I have heard some people say that dogs tend to live longer and are happier when they have a companion. I can see why this would be the case. This is particularly true when you bring a puppy into your home with an older dog. For example, the younger puppy will copy the older dog. If your older Frenchie has been well-trained, you might find it a lot easier to train the second younger pup. This can also work well if you have one French Bulldog who is shy and afraid. The addition of a second playmate could start to bring the other dog out of his or her shell. Pairs can exercise each other Seeing how Claude and the puppy play together during her stay showed me just how happier Frenchies are in pairs. During the 10 days that the puppy stayed with us, I actually reduced the number of walks that I took Claude on. From the moment they woke up in the morning they would start to be active. They would play fight, chew at each other, chase, and run. French Bulldogs are good in pairs as they will play and exercise each other far more than you could ever do. They will keep each other occupied and active, meaning you might not have to spend as much time making sure your one dog gets the exercise he or she needs. Pairs can help reduce separation anxiety Some Frenchies can be prone to separation anxiety. I wrote a long guide which helps you understand if you have a depressed Frenchie. Handy Hint: If you are unable to get a pair of Frenchies then there are some other things you can do to help reduce the problems of separation anxiety. Pairs can be left alone longer When the puppy stayed with us, we felt a lot better knowing that we could leave them both together for periods of time when we had to leave the house. For people with commitments, it can be a real wrench having to leave your Frenchie alone. With two dogs, this is not as big an issue. Pairs can keep each other warm It was so cute seeing Claude and the puppy cuddled up and asleep together. As pack animals, dogs love to cuddle into each other and sleep. Based on having the puppy stay with us, I can say with no doubt in my mind that French bulldogs do need a companion. Frenchies are renowned as being companion dogs. They love human companionship, but also that of other dogs. Frenchies love to have a companion. If you live alone, have family and work commitments, and spend periods outside the home away from your dog then I recommend you have a pair to keep each other company. Do French Bulldogs get lonely? French Bulldogs do get lonely. He will be excited at first, but then then for about an hour he will tend to mope about. But the bottom line is, Frenchies are social companion dogs, and do get very lonely. Just another reason why French bulldog need a companion in the form a second dog. There are a lot of factors you need to consider before buying a second dog. Her and Claude get on like a house on fire for the majority of the time apart from when around food which I will come onto in a moment. But it might not always be that way. When you introduce a second French Bulldog into your home, you need to make sure that you initially take things very slow. Make sure that the first meeting between the two takes place on neutral ground on a long walk away from the home. You might have to give them both their own space if you feel there is the potential for aggressive behaviour. Resource guarding: this can apply to their bed, their owners, and almost always the food. Frenchies can be very protective of these aspects so all are a potential flashpoint. Look out for raised hackles, teeth-baring, and ears back. Continue to take it slow: above all, continue to take things slow. Some dogs will become stressed when a new rival turns up in the home so continue to take the introduction slow over the first 7 days. Naturally the puppy was inquisitive towards our cat, but a few hisses and swipes later, the puppy knew her place. We made sure to keep our cats food and bed up high so she had her own space to get away from the excitable pair of French Bulldogs. Occasional aggression Whilst most of the time the play between the pair of Frenchies was good-natured, there did come certain points where Claude had had enough. The main flashpoint we found though was around food. This led to teeth showing, growling, and aggression. We had to closely monitor this as the puppy was still being fed three times a day see feeding schedule we kept feeding areas separate sometimes. Be prepared to have the occasional aggression between the two, particularly in the first couple of weeks as they start to learn the boundaries between each other. Jealousy One of the funniest aspects we found when having 2 French Bulldogs in our home was jealousy. We found that Claude would get jealous and try to squeeze his way between my wife and the puppy. Food, insurance, and vet bills We were able to give the puppy back at the end of her 10 day stay, but if we did decide to own a pair of Frenchies, the food and vet bills will of course, double. Poop and pee Talking of doubling-up… the dreaded poop and pee scenario. And that was on top of the poop that Claude was leaving in his fenced off garden area. I think this is the worst part about getting a second French Bulldog. I can cope well with pretty much the rest, but the double amount of poop did start to get quite frustrating. Copying negative traits We like to think we have Claude quite well trained. But once the puppy was in our house, they teamed up to become monsters! I am being a little tongue in cheek here, but genuinely, they wrecked our garden. Claude is usually just an occasional digger. I had to stop them digging holes in the lawn countless times. I can only assume that whilst French bulldogs are good in pairs in the main, they will act as tag team to possibly do more naughty things. Either way, it was quite annoying! Conclusion When the puppy finally left us to go back to her owners, Claude did act a little lonely and sad looking for about 2 days. My wife and I were wracked with guilt, so spent lots of time giving him attention to try and take his mind off things. We are now seriously considering getting a second Frenchie to act as a companion for Claude. Sometimes they can be very friendly with each other, but other times they can fight over resources like toys or food bowls. If this happens often enough then it could be dangerous for both dogs! Conclusion If you love French bulldogs, then one is great. But two is better. According to the study, the benefits for your lifestyle seem to increase exponentially with each additional canine. If you are thinking of the second one, two is better; it also makes sense for large homes and families who love dogs. Two Frenchies are more than worth it if you can swing it. Falling in love with your first French Bulldog can often lead to well… another one. These little members of the family can be equal parts hilarious and adorable — having two could only be twice as nice and double the joy. Not so fast- slow your roll! There are a few things to consider before having two French Bulldogs in your family. This means the elder Frenchie should already have experienced basic training. They will follow suit of your elder dog in both good habits as well as not so desirable ones. If your first French Bulldog needs a tune-up with their training, I recommend you prioritize that, so you set both yourself and your new French Bulldog puppy up for success. When a pack leader is not home, your dog can develop separation anxiety and build up a lot of pent-up energy. Being at home with nothing to do can lead to undesirable behavior even with dogs that have relatively low energy levels like French Bulldogs. French Bulldogs especially are very sensitive breeds and cannot be left alone as long as other dogs not to mention their teeny tiny bladders. As dog owners know, it takes commitment and repetition for a responsible dog owner to fully get your dog out of puppyhood. Assess your current lifestyle and living arrangement. Does owning a second Frenchie fit into the mix? Will you be able to handle the added responsibility of taking care of two Frenchies? After all, we know they can be a high-maintenance breed. Financial practicality. Remember the adjustment period you had when you brought home your first dog? Now triple it.
