Because of this, we investigated behaviours exhibited by crossbred dogs by focusing on the popular Goldendoodle and Labradoodle crossbreds by comparing them to their corresponding parent or constituent breeds: Standard or Miniature Poodle, and Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever. The data for this study was provided by volunteer dog owners from across the world who filled out the Canine Behavioural Assessment and Research Questionnaire C-BARQ online survey. The survey results were used to analyse fourteen different representative behavioural trait scores. As expected from a first-generation crossbred F1 , the crossbreds in our study tend to fall between the two parent breeds with some exceptions. The Goldendoodle displayed more problematic behaviour when compared to its constituent breeds, whereas the Labradoodle only differs significantly from the Miniature Poodle in dog rivalry. These results can help advise future dog owners on behavioural trends for particular crossbreds. This is done with the intent of producing a non-shedding hypoallergenic dog that is similar to the non-Poodle parent [ 8 ]. Doodles are not new; the idea of this group of crosses is originally credited to an individual named Wally Conran. Wally worked for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia in the s and was trying to create a guide dog that was also hypoallergenic [ 8 ]. To solve this, Wally came up with the name Labradoodle and marketed this cross as a new hybrid dog breed [ 8 ]. The marketing worked as the public gravitated to this idea of having a well-loved dog breed that was hypoallergenic without shedding [ 8 ]. Unfortunately, Wally soon came to realise that since these dogs were hybrids, they did not have the same predictable temperament or morphological aspects that purebreds have [ 8 ]. Even so, the public has taken to these crosses and their popularity has grown since [ 8 ]. Doodles have followed public demand and trends in dog ownership with more and more crosses being developed, such as the Cockapoo Cocker Spaniel, Poodle cross , Bernadoodle Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodle cross , and Shepadoodle German Shepherd, Poodle cross to name a few [ 8 ]. It is generally believed that crossbreds are healthier, have better temperaments, and are better all-around dogs due to the absence of inbreeding depression [ 5 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Purebred dogs are known to differ between breeds in general temperament and personality traits, and although there have been many studies [ 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 12 ] of these inherited behaviours in purebred dogs, there is still much to be understood about the specific links between behaviour and genetics [ 4 , 5 , 12 ]. Crossbreeding blends DNA from different parent breeds, and while the interaction and expression of alleles is not fully understood [ 3 , 4 , 9 , 11 , 13 ], genetic theory would suggest that crossbreds should express behaviours intermediate to those of the constituent breeds [ 14 ]. While crossbreeding is thought to be useful for combining favourable characteristics from two breeds, little is known about how temperament and personality changes when crossing two purebred dogs, nor how the expressed behaviour of progeny relates to that of the parent breeds [ 4 , 5 , 15 ]. Behaviour expression in canines is not measured on a binary scale where a dog either expresses or does not express the behaviour in question [ 4 ]. Instead, behaviour is measured on a relative scale of expression and dogs, even in purebreds, will express a set behaviour to different degrees [ 4 ]. It should be noted that some purpose-bred behaviours, such as herding and pointing, will only be present in breeds that have been selected to point or herd. However, most non-specialized dog behaviours e. Due to the nature of behaviour quantification and our understanding of quantitative genetics [ 14 ], where the parent breeds differ in score for a particular trait, it is expected that crossbred dogs will express an intermediate level of the behaviour [ 4 ]. We define here an intermediate level of behaviour expression as one that falls between those of the constituent parent breeds. For traits that are scored on a scale of expression, that intermediate expression would be expected to be the average of the scores of the parent breeds. In the cases where the constituent parent breeds do not differ significantly from one another in average behaviour trait expression score, we would expect the crossbreds to be consistent with that average expression score of the parent breeds as well. With the increase in popularity of crossbreeds, it is important to fill the gaps in current knowledge to improve our understanding of the ways in which crossbred dog temperament and personality compare to those of their constituent breeds. Our objective was to investigate behaviours exhibited in crossbreds and compare the expression of those behaviours to the expression of the same behaviours by the constituent pure-breeds. It is widely believed that an F1 hybrid should inherit predictable behaviour as first described by Darwin [ 16 ]. As all of the parent breeds, including the poodles, were used for hunting game birds, it is thought that these dog breeds would be more similar to one another than to non-retriever breeds and crosses, such as the Shepadoodle. Because the Miniature Poodle and Standard Poodle are two different breeds as defined by the Canadian kennel club, and since the Canine Behavioural Assessment and Research Questionnaire C-BARQ database does not ask owners for pedigree information, it was necessary to compare both Poodle types to the Doodle crosses. Thus, we predicted that the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle, having parent breeds from similar working backgrounds, would be similar to their parent breeds with little behavioural tendency towards one or the other parent breed [ 15 ]. C-BARQ is an owner-completed questionnaire originally developed by Yuying Hsu and James Serpell [ 18 ], that assesses 14 different behavioural traits based on questions reflecting the responses of dogs to various real-life scenarios. Data collection has been ongoing since , and the current database has over 50, dog behavioural records from around the world and includes over different crossbreds and purebred dogs [ 17 , 18 ]. The database was originally created to be used for assessing potential problematic behaviour within the working and pet dog communities [ 18 ]. Because of the large database, we are able to collect phenotypic behavioural profiles which allow us to assess behavioural profiles of the purebreds and Doodles in our study even in the absence of pedigree information. Materials and Methods 2. Data for this study were extracted and cleaned in April .Dog owners are able to complete the C-BARQ survey online and were originally made aware of the survey via veterinary offices, dog trainers, social media, pet magazines and word of mouth [ 17 ]. The survey is organised by owner ID and each volunteer can complete the survey for up to a maximum of 10 dogs. Owner effect is a concern in the current dataset due to the relatively small number of crossbreds, as multi-dog households could presumably have similar behaviours due to environment [ 18 ]. We have addressed these concerns in our statistical model. Due to the nature of the C-BARQ project, we do not have pedigree information but do have information on where the dog was acquired. We also had no control over who filled out the survey. From there, questions were organised into eight categories, three of which are based on severity and five based on the frequency of occurrence [ 18 ]. For each factor, scores for the related questions were combined to produce an average score that was used for analysis. Statistical Analyses Separate analyses were completed for Labradoodle and Goldendoodle crosses. There were a total of dogs in both data sets with Labradoodles, Labrador Retrievers, Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and Miniature Poodles making dogs in the LD analysis and dogs in the GD analysis. Individual dogs were assumed to be unrelated and we do not know which Poodle type was used for each of the crossbred dogs. All statistical analyses were performed using SAS version 9. Comparisons were assessed using adjusted least-square means and adjusted using Tukey Kramer adjustment to account for the uneven sample size between our breeds. The country was included in the models as a fixed effect.

Keep in mind that consistency is key in Goldendoodle training. A structured routine gives dogs a sense of security. Routine is also an important part of housetraining , as consistent feeding times will also beget consistent potty times. If you have other family members living with you, make sure you all follow the exact same routine. It is usually recommended that puppies younger than six months of age eat three meals per day. Socialize Your Puppy Secondly, all dogs, and especially Goldendoodles, are social creatures. They enjoy spending time with their families and meet other dogs at the dog park. Early socialization is important for your Goldendoodle pup to get used to new people, pets and situations. I have put together some tips that I feel were crucial in training our puppy the way we did. If I could go back and give advice to us, these are some tips that I would share. We started with the basics such as potty training, leash training, walking without pulling, and just basic obedience. We also began early with the task of teaching her to do common tricks such as sit, shake hands, and give five. As with any puppy though, it can be challenging. They are like a toddler and are just experiencing the world for the first time. Positive reinforcement is needed to help them understand exactly what you want them to do. Your efforts will be greatly rewarded if you start as early as possible, taking it seriously and truly understanding that what you do in their earliest years will either harm or help your efforts in training your Doodle. Your dog will be able to read your emotions. They have a way of picking up on your frustration and will not respond well during these moments of frustration. If you are more patient in your approach, they will respond more positively and feel your calm, reassuring energy. It will help them to retain the teachings that you are trying to get through to them. A dog that experiences this may develop scars from such actions that they will carry with them the rest of their lives. It will take time for your puppy to respond to commands. A leash is a primary way you have to control your dog when on walks or out in public. You see this all the time when people are walking their dogs. The is especially true with a large breed but even a small dog like a Mini Goldendoodle can become challenging if not trained properly. This takes time and a lot of patience. Our Mini Doodle pulled like any other dog in the beginning but we often corrected her with commands and a slight tug here and there. Because we started young, she became good on a leash and has continued this trend for most of her life. The best way we found to leash train our Mini Goldendoodle was to take her on walks consistently. Rather than just letting her run free, our focus was on keeping her by our side at all times. We also practiced around the house and gave rewards with treats when she did what we wanted her to do. Our breeder suggested that we make use of a bell so that our dog would have an easy way of letting us know she needed to go outside and potty. We gave it a shot and it has been super convenient for our Doodle to let us know that she needs to go outside. Rather than walking around crying, they can ring a bell and you can hear it all over your house. Any dog that I ever have in the future can expect to have bell training incorporated into their potty training. Eventually, they will catch on that every time they go outside, the bell needs to ring. It signals to them that what they have done is worthy of a reward so they are more likely to do that in the future. If you are going to train your dog like this, you will go through lots of treats throughout a training session. Using healthy, low-calorie treats for this is a must. Our favorite was baby carrots which we cut up into small pieces as we were training her to do different things. She loved the crunch and taste of them and now 14 years later, they are still among her favorite foods. We have used them as treats her entire life. You can also give them small fruits like blueberries , or small apple pieces. Just make sure not to give them anything that might harm them. Here is a good list of foods that should be avoided. If you just purchase boxes of treats and commence to giving these as training rewards, you might see them gain weight if you are not careful. If not now, at least later on in life since they are going to be conditioned to eat these types of processed treats. You can still include the commercially made treats but these healthy options will give you an additional way to reward them. We used our crate to train our dog and keep her in it when we were gone for small amounts of time. She would generally fall asleep in her crate and curl up with the pillows and toys that we had left for her. As a puppy, she found comfort and shelter in her crate. She often ran to it with her treat and ate it there so that no one would bother her. I worked from home and would often keep her in a crate in my office as I worked. If you have an area that is not carpeted, a gate can be a great way to make sure they stay in an uncarpeted area which makes it much easier to clean up if they have an accident. It also allows you to get them on a routine without them messing up throughout your house on carpets and rugs. Just a simple gate that opens and holds itself together pushing against the wall on each side is what we used. The following gate is similar to ours and is very cost-effective. Get up at the same time each morning, go to bed at the same time at night, take them out to potty at the same times each day, and take them to the same locations when they potty. All of these routines combined will help to build the connections in their brain needed to become a well-trained dog. This had multiple purposes. To keep her from tracking dirt into the house. Condition her to allow us to touch and mess with her paws. Doing this has helped with being able to clip her toenails, trim her paw hair, and inspect for other issues regularly. We also did the same with her teeth. We often looked inside her mouth and messed around with her teeth to get her used to it. I started brushing her teeth when she was young and this has all helped to maintain her teeth over the years. We have no issues opening up her mouth and inspecting areas, and cleaning areas that need to be cleaned. I brush her teeth regularly and starting young was a key to making it possible. However, it would have probably been better to opt for this type of training from a professional. We are self-learners so we chose to learn on our own. If you have a location in your area that offers basic obedience school, which can often be done with a group of people and their dogs , then sign up for it. There will be a fee to pay but it will give you a good start and a foundation to grow from. Not only is it good for the dog but it will also help you to be the human and leader that your dog is looking for. It will give you the tools you need to become a great parent to your Mini Goldendoodle. You can usually find classes like this at your local pet store or from a professional dog trainer in your area. It will definitely give you a leg-up with being able to communicate with your dog. You need to be intentional about the process and make sure everything you do around them is thought out and you are at least aware of how it might affect them in the future. Every now and then, a particularly feisty puppy will become more excited by this disciplinary action and need a more distinct disciplinary measure. This next action needs to be initiated quickly. This will be uncomfortable for your puppy. When behavior meets with uncomfortable consequences, the behavior will stop. With all this being said, the absolute best remedy is for you to arrange daily play dates with other puppies or young dogs. The bottom line is that your puppy needs to have active playtime each day. Jumping — Your puppy will jump on you to get your attention. This may seem innocent while your puppy is small, but Grandma may not appreciate being knocked over by the full grown untrained dog. Make sure you do not reward the puppy for the act of getting down as this will enforce the behavior of jumping up only to be told to get down for a reward. This is not a sign of aggression unless you allow this to go undisciplined over time. You need to actively discourage any and all growling directed at you. If your puppy growls at you when you get close to the food bowl, immediately remove the food bowl and feed the puppy out of your hand. Do not stop brushing until the puppy accepts this without growling. Each puppy needs to learn its place in the pecking order of a family. Obviously, they need to be the lowest on the totem pole. If allowed to be boss, growling is a normal thing for a puppy to exhibit when showing its dominance. Each family member must establish they are boss. This includes young children who are timid or fearful of the puppy. Remember that any behavior you allow as a puppy is then extremely difficult to curb later in life. If you do not wish to have your adult dog on the furniture, do not sit on the sofa holding your puppy. Make sure in the beginning to work on commands with no distractions like other dogs, traffic, children, or wildlife. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. We begin the deworming process and also begin the first vaccine. We do not travel with the puppies to an animal hospital. I feel it could be stressful for the puppies and creates an opportunity for the puppies to be exposed to other pet sicknesses. I have a traveling vet come and conduct full physicals on all of the puppies. You will receive a copy of her report in the puppy folder upon pickup date. We have outside play areas and toys for them to interact with. They will also be played with by children and handled by adults. They will have several toys to interact with. Obstacles will be in there play pens to learn jumping and crawling. Process Purchasing a Puppy: If you decide that you would like to move forward with getting a puppy, we recommend that you first look at the females and the males that we have. Sometimes the males could change if multiple females come into heat at the same time. Next, I would like to have a phone interview so we can find out more about yourself and the home that a puppy of mine would be going to. In our discussion I would like to know which mother you were leaning towards and whether you prefer a male or female puppy. I can go over all additional questions that you may have including total costs. If both parties are fully satisfied, I will move forward with sending you over the contract. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. We highly recommend slowly changing the food over time if you decide to change it as they have extremely sensitive stomachs at this age. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores.
