An English bulldog has a congenital heart problem requiring medication and trips to a cardiologist in Albany. A puggle is partly paralyzed and needs a wheelchair. More than half of the dogs rescued by the group have come from bad breeding operations — puppy mills -- that churn out puppies while keeping the dogs in cages with little access to health care. Already a problem prior to the pandemic, the number of puppy mills and their production ballooned during lockdown as people looked for dogs to keep them company at home. The dogs rescued from puppy mills often have costly health problems. The puppy mills, many in rural Ohio and Texas, keep the dogs in cages, provide little or no medical care, and will not keep dogs that are ill or on the market too long.
