From a very young age we train our puppies in a few things that aid them in being successful adults as family members, companions, service dogs, agility dogs. The Coltriever is a mid sized dog, they weigh between pounds and are built similar to a Golden Retriever. Available Puppies Our next litter will be in September ready for their new home in early November. Usually we have… Early Learning Each of my litters is born inside my home, rather than a kennel setting. This allows them to hear the sounds and smell the scents associated with a household from the very start. They are continually exposed to the everyday sights and sounds of a family home. This includes potentially scary sounds such as vacuum… About Our Puppies I have been raising Coltrievers in Lacey, Washington since .They are a designer dog, which is a mix of Golden Retriever and Border Collie breeds. They are a mid- sized dog, weighing between 40 and 80 pounds. The conformation of a Coltriever is similar to a Golden Retriever. Their colors vary with some black… She has turned out to be the sweetest, most fun dog ever. We love her so very much!! So thankful that I found that photo of her on your website last summer — one of our greatest blessings. Shelly Tigard Or. Our dog, Scout, was an instant playmate to my kids, aged 2 and 5. I fell in love with her, Queenie. I had to know what she was, where she was from, and how I could get one. I was told she was a Crooked Rooster Coltriever. Then, I remembered Crooked Rooster! I looked it up, contacted Holly and heard back within a couple hours. We talked on the phone for over an hour and a half. I fell in love with what Coltriever stood for and where they came from instantly. We set up a time to come tour the farm, and meet the puppies. We were placed in a pen with all the little all black Coltriever angels, and immediately saw Baloo. We knew he was the one. Baloo was the most perfect little squishy guy I had ever met. We chose him and have never looked back. He has changed our life for the better and has been the most amazing buddy we could have asked for. He loves other dogs so much, and so we contacted Holly to see if she had any litters available. She did! We went to meet them, and fell in love instantly with Tibbs, just like Baloo. Holly talked us through our meet and greet with the boys and what we should look for in how they interact. Holly is always very knowledgeable about her puppies and it makes you feel very safe about making this big of a life decision. I am now obsessed with our two Coltrievers, and am excited to have them apart of our life forever! This means they are not considered a purebred dog or a designer dog breed. Border Collies are athletic, loyal dogs with a high energy level. They love to move and work with their families. You can also meet the mother dog in-person for an idea about what to expect regarding general size and temperament. On the Border Collie side, you have a highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dog that loves to be active and loves to work. Border Collies get along well with other dogs and children, but can be reserved or slightly suspicious towards strangers. Otherwise, they will find their own entertainment, which might result in them herding your children or a flock of sheep into your kitchen. The Border Collie Mix could take all of its characteristics from the Border Collie, from the other parent dog breed in the mix, or be any combination of characteristics from both. Before bringing a Border Collie Mix home, make sure you take some time to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed of the litter. This will give you a good idea of what possibilities to prepare for in your Border Collie Mix puppy. The Border Collie is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They may be a high-energy dog breed that prefers wide open spaces, but they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. A well-exercised, mentally engaged Border Collie is also okay with being alone. In terms of climate, this dog breed does best in a moderate climate as they do not do well in hot or cold climates. With a Border Collie Mix, you could end up with a dog that is moderately adaptable like the Border Collie. Or, you could end up with a dog more similar to the other parent breed. This could result in a more adaptable or less adaptable dog depending on the cross. Having a conversation with the breeder about the other parent breed can clear up some of the confusion and give you a better idea of what to expect. Border Collies are generally healthy, but can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. You can also ask about the genetic history of the parents and check out health screenings and health clearances to rule out some conditions. On the Border Collie side, you have a dog that is highly intelligent and eager to learn. They are generally difficult for the average person to train, so you will want to enroll in obedience and training classes with your Border Collie Mix puppy regardless of the other parent breed. Even if the dog breed in the cross is highly trainable for novice dog owners, there is the possibility the puppy will pick up Border Collie characteristics and be more difficult to train. A well-trained and properly socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a well-rounded dog, so make sure you start training and socialization early. Border Collies have a weather-resistant double coat that requires weekly brushing. They also have heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change and need to be brushed more frequently during this time. Depending on the other parent breed in your Border Collie Mix, their coat could require more or less grooming. Finding out about the other parent breed from the breeder will give you an idea of what you could expect when it comes to coat. Regardless of the coat, all dogs need to have their nails trimmed, teeth brushed, and ears checked regularly. For most dogs, trimming nails once a month is sufficient. When it comes to dental care for your dog , brushing their teeth daily is recommended. This will help prevent the tartar and plaque buildup that leads to dental disease. If your Border Collie Mix has ears that drop down, they are more prone to moisture and developing an infection. Regularly checking them and cleaning as needed helps reduce the risk of ear infections in your dog. Border Collies have a lot of energy and never seem to get tired. They love to be moving and working. Plus, they were originally bred to run several miles a day and they still have the energy to do so. It is important that you are prepared to handle a high energy working dog when you choose a Border Collie Mix puppy. If the other parent breed is a couch potato, your puppy could end up having a lower energy level. A Border Collie tends to weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and usually stands 18 to 22 inches tall. They love being the center of attention. They constantly crave affection — and at their size, they have no problems getting it. They make up for it by being incredibly sweet, though. Masti-Bulls are fun-loving and affectionate, but they can quickly get serious if they perceive a threat. They will not hesitate to protect their families, making them great guard dogs and equally good babysitters. Despite their agreeable nature, they have sad-looking faces, especially their solemn eyes. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, that protectiveness can sometimes be an issue, especially if your kids have friends over who like to roughhouse. Also, these dogs have no idea how big they are. If they get rambunctious, they can easily step on or bowl over a small child. You need to teach them to be aware of their surroundings; you also need to teach your kid how to act around the dog. They have formidable barks that broadcast just how big they are; there are few criminals brave enough to risk entering a house with one of these monsters inside. However, both parent breeds were originally bred as fighting animals, and there may be residual violence left in their DNA. Also, be careful about resource guarding with these dogs. They may get along great with other animals — until somebody gets too close to the food bowl, a favorite toy, or even you. Avoid anything with animal by-products. Portion control is important with larger breeds, as many of them will eat until they run out of food. A brisk walk, lasting minutes, is often all they need. They love to play, and they can spend hours pulling you around the house with a rope toy. Be careful not to overdo any exercise regimen you put them on. That means avoiding activities like agility training or anything that involves running and jumping especially on hard surfaces. Swimming is great for them, though. Introduce them to new people and places, and build up their confidence. You need to pay special attention to their ears too. Other than that, their grooming needs are fairly basic. For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders State page page. Other factors that can determine price include the lineage of the dog, whether or not they have been housebroken, and to what extent they have been trained. How to Find A Responsible German Shepherd Breeder in Pennsylvania Finding a reputable German Shepherd breeder in Pennsylvania is extremely important, especially if you are looking for health information on the parents of the dog. This professional organization tracks the lineage of each dog that has been registered to confirm that they are healthy and fit for breeding. Responsible breeders will always have a backup plan in case of an emergency. Finally, be sure to ask about the health guarantees that are offered by the breeder. A good breeder will always stand behind the health of their puppies and will offer a full refund or replacement if something should go wrong. This will give you the chance to meet the puppies and their parents, and see where they are being raised. You should also ask to see the health certificates of both the parents and the puppies. Hopefully, both parents are living on the premises as part of a family. The puppies should be well taken care of and clean. Many breeders will also share important information on raising and training your new puppy with you. A good breeder will encourage you to spend lots of time with each German Shepherd puppy. A good breeder will have no problem giving you the contact information of other people who have purchased puppies from them in the past. Many breeders will be happy to set up a meeting so that you can ask them questions about their experience with the breeder. They should be able to tell you about the quality of the puppies, how well they were raised, and if they had any health or temperament problems. This is a great way to get an idea of what you can expect from your new puppy. One of the most important things to ask your Pennsylvania German Shepherd Breeder is who their veterinarian is. A good breeder will have a veterinarian that they use for regular check-ups and health certifications. This will ensure that your puppy receives the best possible care. Reputable breeders also make sure that their puppies are up-to-date on all of their vaccinations and deworming treatments before they leave for their new homes. A good breeder will be happy to share their experience with you and tell you about their breeding practices. They should also be able to tell you about the parents of the puppies and their health certifications. If the breeder seems hesitant or unwilling to share information with you, it may be best to move on. Remember, the most important thing is finding a breeder that you feel comfortable with and can trust. These breeders often have little or no experience with the breed and may be breeding dogs for financial gain rather than to improve the breed. They may also be selling puppies from puppy mills, which is a huge red flag. Puppy mills are large-scale commercial breeding facilities that produce puppies for profit without regard to the health and welfare of the animals. There are plenty of responsible breeders out there who will be happy to help you find the perfect puppy for your family. By If you think you may have found an unethical German Shepherd breeder in Pennsylvania, please report them to the American Kennel Club or your local animal control agency. But a responsible breeder will be upfront about any health issues the puppies may have and will provide you with a health certificate from a veterinarian. They should also offer a guarantee on the health of the puppy. If the puppy develops any major health problems within a certain amount of time, the breeder should be willing to refund your money or provide a replacement puppy. A good breeder will also be happy to answer any questions you have about the health of your puppy. Here are a few tips: Make sure your yard is fenced in and that there are no holes or escape routes. Buy a crate or kennel for the puppy to sleep in and put it in a quiet, safe place in your home. Stock up on food, water dishes, toys, and bedding. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to get the puppy checked out and get any necessary vaccinations and deworming treatments. Start socializing your puppy with other people and animals as soon as possible. The more socialized they are, the better behaved they will be as adults. By taking the time to prepare your home and schedule an appointment with your veterinarian, you can ensure that your German Shepherd puppy will have a smooth transition into their new home. German Shepherds make great pets for families with children and other animals. They are loyal, protective, and intelligent dogs that require a lot of exercise and stimulation. Start by setting up a small area with papers or an indoor grass pad for the puppy to go potty on. Then when you take them outside, they should be praised when they potty in the right place. Gradually increase the amount of time between potty breaks so that your puppy can hold it longer and longer until they are able to go all day without having an accident. You should also start taking your German Shepherd Puppy on short leash walks throughout the day so that they can get used to being outside and having more exposure to their surroundings. Training your German Shepherd Puppy will require time and patience, but with a little hard work, you can have a well-behaved dog that is the envy of your neighborhood. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. He went from one owner to another who did not have the time for him or could give him the socialization or training he needed. We only know part of what happened to Mason, we do know he was traumatized, under socialized, and he did not trust. Unfortunately, by the time he came to the Lycoming County SPCA and was adopted out to a family did we discover his biggest problem; Mason was diagnosed with PTSD by a renowned certified dog behaviorist. Mason then came back to the SPCA to undergo socialization, behavior modification training while learning to give his trust. Mason has been in a foster home for the past months, where he has lived very happily in the same large kennel with a female mixed Pitbull. Mason has a lot of love to give if you can give him time to adjust and trust. He needs to go to a home with a fenced in yard and no young children. We do not think he will do well with cats or other small animals but a dog companion on a dog by dog basis may work wonderfully. As most Shepherds, Mason is extremely smart, eager to please, and connects with his human. If you are interested in a very loyal, active, affectionate, fun loving best friend, and are willing to give Mason time to gain his trust, please fill out an application to meet Mason. He has come a very long way and deserves to be rescued from life in a kennel.

This means there are no guarantees of how Golden Retriever Husky puppy will look. Some dogs look more like their Retriever parents, while others look more like Husky puppies. They all have one thing in common: pet hair, lots of hair, and a nice fuzz that requires frequent brushing. They shed less than a purebred Husky but have reasonable grooming needs despite their thick hair. A cordless vacuum cleaner is essential for cleaning floors and clothes. A Golden Retriever Husky puppy can grow big or small because he is a mix of two large breeds. Genetics is a complex science that involves many more variables. It's hard to predict what a Golden Retriever Husky puppy will look like. It's possible to end up with the breeder's original vision of a golden retriever with bright blue eyes. Or, you can have a Husky-like dog with long hair and ears. Because they can inherit different physical traits from their parents, even mixed Golden Retriever and Husky puppy mixes will look different. Some look like Husky puppies with their long ears and multicolored coat. Others look more like puppy-friendly chew toys with large, brightly colored eyes. You will find your Golden Retriever Husky puppy adorable and fluffy. They will have long, strong legs and large eyes. Although he looks more like a Golden Retriever or a Husky, the traits are all there. It's just a question of which genes are dominant and which are recessive. A Husky and a Golden Retriever make a strong, outward-oriented dog. They are great for running on tough terrain, hiking, skiing, and other canine activities. Many people like the surprise factor. It can be exciting not knowing what your Goberian pup will look like when he's older. A Golden Retriever Husky puppy is a dangerously adorable thing. Let's face it! This is why this mix has caught the attention of dog breeders and potential buyers. The combination of Husky and Golden Retriever is often a perfect blend of the two breeds. It has the drive and desire for adventure of the Husky mixed with its friendliness and gentleness. He is often compared to a Golden Retriever who drank an energy drink. However, this comparison is only hypothetical. They love cuddles and can be gentle while playing. Although they can sometimes be protective of their family members, they are generally good with new people and strangers. Husky and Retrievercross dogs get their defensive side from their Husky parents, but it's often contained and only shows up when they feel threatened. The Goberian Golden Retriever Siberian Husky Mix can be rebellious at times and take things in their own direction, just like purebred Huskies and other Husky mixes. The stubbornness of the Goberian is a characteristic that comes with the territory. Although they can be adorable, they should be supervised by an owner to ensure they don't hurt themselves. Since the Husky and Golden Retriever can roam freely, they may need some dog training or house training before they can be trusted off-leash. These books are perfect for dog training! The Goberian dog is the perfect dog for an adventurous and loving family, able to keep up with their dog's energy level and open to new experiences. Child Compatibility The Golden Husky-Golden Husky mix has proven to be an excellent choice for families with children. He is known to have the gentle and loving manners of the Goldens. It's a great way to get your kids away from the TV and other electronics. It also allows you to teach them early that all dogs, regardless of design, should be walked every day. You never know; they might believe you if you tell them their furry friend is a Golden Retriever mixed breed wolf. Many of these mixes are more wolf-like. However, this does not necessarily apply to everyone. Some grow up looking like fluffy teddy bears. Siberian Husky and Golden Retriever mixed breed dogs should not be left alone with children under three. Accidents can happen even with the most affectionate mixed-breed dogs. Because they are a cross between two dog breeds, the Goberian can have any mix of characteristics from the parent breeds. They may take on more traits of one parent or have a combination of both. Goberians are a relatively new designer dog breed that tends to be friendly, affectionate, and gentle. Because they are a mixed dog breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They tend to have a gentle and loyal nature. Goberians tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can get along with other pets in the house, but may need to be introduced and socialized for it if they inherit the Siberian Husky prey drive. The Goberian is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their energy, they are best suited for larger homes with a securely fenced-in yard where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living if they get enough exercise and attention. They tend to prefer cooler climates, but they do well in just about any climate. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Despite the occasional independent streak, a Goberian thrives on affection and loves to be near their families. Plus, they tend to be easily bored, so they do not tend to do well with long periods of alone time. As with any hybrid dog breed, a Goberian can inherit all, a mix, or none of the potential health problems common to the parent breeds. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help ease potential concerns you may have. In general, the Goberian is intelligent and learns quickly, but the overall trainability of them will vary. They can be moderately easy to train or more difficult depending on the mix of characteristics from the two parent breeds. If the Goberian puppy takes more after their Golden Retriever parent, they will be easier to train and eager to please you. However, if they take after their Siberian Husky parent, they will be more difficult to train as they will be more stubborn and independent. Regardless, you will want to plan for puppy training classes, especially if you are a first-time dog owner. Plus, the classes offer opportunities for early socialization, which is also important. Because the Goberian is a mixed dog breed, their coat can come in a variety of coat colors. Their coat tends to be long and dense and may be straight or slightly wavy. They can range from light to moderate shedding year-round and may have two heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change. Bathing is an occasional requirement as needed and many Goberians only need a bath every months. Trimming nails on a monthly basis is usually sufficient. You want to make sure their ears are not trapping moisture, dirt, or debris that could lead to an ear infection. Thankfully, you can help prevent dental disease in your dog by implementing a good dental care plan. You can also supplement your efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene treats and chews, and even a specially-formulated dental care diet. The Goberian is a high-energy dog breed. They require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. In addition to daily walks and some playtime, your Goberian is likely to enjoy running with you, going on a hike , and maybe even swimming. A fully-grown Goberian usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Goberian generally lives years. Goberian Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Goberian page! Red Golden Retriever And Husky Mix Temperament Predicting the temperament of any mixed-breed dog is tricky, and there is no certain way to know if your Goberian dog will take more after his Husky parent or vice versa. To get a better sense of your new Golden Retriever Husky mix, try to meet both of his parents and get a sense of their temperaments. Friendly The Husky and Golden Retriever mix is going to be a very friendly and people-oriented pooch. Like both of its parenting breeds, the Goberian likes to spend time and interact with people and is especially gentle towards children. Goberians form strong bonds with their humans and will love to spend time and cuddle with all family members. However, they tend to pick a special person, someone whom they favor more than anyone else and that person will have a special place in their hearts. Highly Energetic The Husky Golden Retriever mix is a very energetic and active dog that requires prolonged exercise sessions to stay happy and well-behaved. If not properly exercised, Goberians can easily get bored and will resort to destructive chewing, howling, barking, and full-blown mayhem! Goberians need up to 90 minutes of exercise every day, and enjoy swimming, running, hiking, or any other activity that gets the heart rate going. Independent Depending on how much it takes after its Husky parent, your crossbreed can be very independent and stubborn at times. Intelligent Both Huskies and Golden Retrievers are smart breeds, so your mix will be too. The greatest thing with owning an intelligent dog is that they are easy to train when properly motivated. Start training your puppy as soon as you bring it home and only use positive reinforcement. Using treats , play, toys, or cuddles as rewards can motivate your pooch to stay focused on training even if he is stubborn and this will make the whole process a lot easier for you. Goberians that take more after their Husky parent have a stronger wanderlust potential so it is wise to keep your pooch on a leash and have a fully fenced yard. Otherwise, be prepared to run miles to catch and bring your dog back home from exploratory adventures. While Goberians are generally healthy, they are prone to certain diseases that affect Huskies and Golden Retrievers. The most common problems seen it this mix are: Hip dysplasia.

By Manish Pandey Newsbeat reporter A new study suggests that pugs face such serious health conditions they can "no longer be considered a typical dog from a health perspective. The study compared the health of 4, pugs and 21, non-pugs. UK pugs are almost twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually, compared with other dogs. Brachycephalic, or "brachy" dogs - like pugs, bulldogs or boxers - are bred for their distinctive looks. In recent years, pugs have increased in popularity, with a five-fold increase in Kennel Club registrations of pugs from .Health issues Overall, pugs were found to be around 1. The findings do not "come as a surprise" to Dr Myfanwy Hill, a veterinary surgeon who works at the University of Cambridge. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Researchers argue that the health of the dog should be prioritised over people's desire to own one That causes a lot of the problems pugs face - including issues with breathing, skin and their back. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome - a breathing issue - was the disorder with the highest risk in pugs, with the designer breed almost 54 times more likely to have the condition. Dr Hill says the narrow nostrils pugs have, is like "trying to breathe through a really narrow straw" and makes simple things like breathing "much harder work". She adds the "common image we have of pugs" where they're smiling and have their tongue sticking out, looking like they're panting, is not the "joyful" image we may think. Dr Hill says "they have more skin than they need for the size of their face", which can cause skin infections to occur, creating soreness and itchiness. And the "attractive tail" that people like actually shows a "malformed vertebra" which can result in more slipped discs. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Even if it looks cute, an oversized tongue can cause problems The research also showed pugs have a reduced risk of some conditions, including heart murmur, aggression and wounds. But researchers suggest their findings indicate many pugs may suffer from seriously compromised health and welfare. He says it's important to "focus on the health of the dog rather than the whims of the owner when we are choosing what type of dog to own". Dr Hill says people who buy dogs do so "in good faith" and it's important "not to attribute blame". But there are things that can be done for existing pug owners - like looking out for symptoms of breathing difficulties, such as excessive panting or lots of noise during breathing. In summer months, pugs are more at risk of heat-related problems because they have less airway - so need to be kept cool, she says. And while the "barrel-shaped bodies are really cute" - weight management is important because "an overweight short face dog like a pug is at even greater risk". And we need to make sure that they live long, happy and healthy lives," Dr Hill adds. Listen to Newsbeat live at and weekdays - or listen back here. Related Topics. By Emily A. Fassbaugh, DVM on Jun. The Pug became a favorite of royals around the world, and today they are a very popular dog breed. They are easily identifiable due to their flat, wrinkly face, curly tail, and snorty, loud breathing. A Pug is typically 10 to 13 inches tall and weighs 14 to 18 pounds. They have short coats that are typically fawn tan or black. Caring for a Pug Pugs are a very friendly dog breed that thrive on attention from their owners. They are people pleasers and like to feel included in the day-to-day happenings in their home. Pugs are a brachycephalic breed. This means they have short muzzles, flat faces, narrow nostrils, and narrow airways—and often have an elongated soft palate. The elongated soft palate can cause a blockage to the windpipe entrance, creating the typically loud snoring and breathing noises they produce. Due to their flat faces, Pugs breathe with more effort than dogs with a normal-size muzzle. This creates swallowed air, which leads to Pugs being gassier than most dogs. It also means that Pugs do not do very well in overly hot climates or with extreme exercise. As a result, Pugs do best as primarily indoor dogs, with controlled excursions outside. While their coat is short, they do shed quite a bit. Regular grooming can help to manage their shedding. Pug Health Issues Pugs are prone to many health issues. Most are related to their brachycephalic conformation. Fortunately, many of their potential health problems can be managed with the assistance of your veterinarian. Since dogs use their airways to cool themselves, this increased effort for Pugs leaves them more predisposed to overheating. To keep your Pug safe, follow these guidelines: Avoid taking your Pug outside during the hottest parts of the day Avoid strenuous exercise for your Pug during hot weather Provide consistent access to cool, clean water Excess weight can increase breathing difficulties and make it easier for a Pug to overheat. Keeping your Pug at a healthy weight or on a weight-control diet to prevent obesity—when prescribed by a veterinarian—will help minimize risk. Respiratory Distress The narrow airway of a Pug also means that they are more prone to respiratory distress. If your Pug becomes stressed or distressed, they breathe even harder. This harsh breathing causes their already narrow airways to collapse further, which makes it even harder for them to breathe. Without intervention, this can progress to the point of low oxygen levels and collapse. Avoiding stress and keeping your Pug calm can help to avoid true respiratory distress. If you are noticing heavy or distressed breathing, contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic immediately. This is a simple procedure that can be done at the same time as spay or neuter surgery. Your veterinarian may also recommend surgery to correct an elongated soft palate if they have severe respiratory problems. Allergies and Ear Infections Pugs are especially prone to skin allergies and ear infections. These problems can start to show up as early as one year of age. Since Pugs have narrow ear canals and deep folds in the skin around their face, they can collect debris and bacteria more easily. Regular cleaning also allows you to check the ears and skin to identify inflammation and seek care early. Skin allergies are not curable, but seeking medications from a veterinarian and doing preventive bathing and ear cleaning to prevent infections caused by allergies will help to keep your Pug comfortable and happy. Dental Disease Pugs have small jaws, but they have the same number of teeth as other dog breeds. As a result, many of their teeth are crooked and crowded. Just like in people, crowded and crooked teeth can lead to increased buildup of food between their teeth. The result is increased risk for gingivitis, infection, and dental disease. Over time, this can lead to tooth loss and pain. Daily tooth brushing is key to control and prevent inflammation. In addition, annual dental cleanings under anesthesia by your veterinarian starting at 1—2 years of age will help to identify infection and periodontal disease early. Ultimately, diseased teeth should be removed as early as possible to avoid pain, but diligent dental care can help prevent tooth loss. Eye Injuries A problem that is unique to Pugs is the risk of eye injury. All of these constitute an emergency, and your pet should be taken to the vet immediately. Without rapid treatment, these injuries can result in permanent damage or even loss of an eye. This condition affects the hips of a dog and happens when blood flow to the top of the femur is restricted, leading to a very painful condition that will eventually lead to arthritis. What to Feed a Pug Diet is an important part of maintaining the health of a Pug, especially since obesity is common for the breed. Obesity increases the risk of heat stroke and breathing problems. To help keep your Pug at a healthy weight , talk with your veterinarian about a weight management or calorie-restricted diet to help prevent obesity. Make sure that you are feeding your Pug a dog food that is appropriate for their life stage puppy, adult, or senior. These age-specific diets ensure that your Pug is getting the nutrients they need to thrive at every age. Some Pugs have food allergies that contribute to skin problems; your veterinarian will discuss feeding trials and special protein ingredients to test for and treat food allergies. How to Feed a Pug Pugs do best when fed 2 or 3 small meals a day. So when feeding dry food, the shape and size of the kibble is important to prevent choking. Some companies make foods specific to Pugs, designed to be easier to eat and help manage Pug-specific medical problems. Talk with your veterinarian to learn more about breed-specific dog food and the best kibble size for your dog. How Much to Feed a Pug Pugs should be fed based on their body size to avoid overfeeding. Typically, this is 1 to 1. Nutritional Tips for Pugs Any nutritional supplements given to your Pug should be used to address their individual health problems. A fatty acid supplement such as fish oil can be beneficial in managing skin allergies. A joint supplement containing glucosamine and chondroitin can be beneficial if your Pug has arthritis or other joint problems. They are easily excited and can have periods of high energy. Pugs are eager to please and love spending a lot of time with their owners. They are a very loving breed and enjoy cuddling and being close to their people. Pet parents must remember that their brachycephalic characteristics make them snore, so light sleepers be warned. Pug Behavior Pugs are generally happy, friendly dogs. While they do have moments of high energy, they are generally calm couch potatoes. Without mental stimulation, Pugs can become mischievous and develop problematic behaviors or find destructive activities to keep them busy. Be sure to schedule your outdoor playtime around peak sun hours to avoid risk of your Pug overheating. Aggression is rare—especially if your Pug has been well socialized during their puppy years and has a solid training foundation. Pug Training Pugs are typically very food-motivated, which makes them relatively easily to train. They are not physically good candidates for high-energy exercise, such as running and agility, but low-key activities like casual walks or a quick game of fetch are fun for them. Fun Activities for Pugs. Allergic skin disorder x 5. Pugs are often considered to have a very gentle temperament, and this is supported by the study which showed very low levels of aggression in the breed. While this may make the Pug a good family pet from a human perspective, owners also need to consider the quality of life that the dog endures. Although these results provide evidence for some positive aspects of Pug health, they sadly highlight the Pug overall has substantially poorer health than non-Pugs. The findings suggest that many Pugs may suffer from seriously compromised health and welfare because of the extreme body shape that humanity expects of this breed. To correct this, the body shape of Pugs must shift towards a more moderate, and less extreme, conformation if we are to reduce these health and welfare issues for Pugs in the UK. It is time now that we focus on the health of the dog rather than the whims of the owner when we are choosing what type of dog to own. Widespread ownership of Pugs with extreme facial and body conformations should be discouraged until measures are in place to ensure stricter and more acceptable breed standards. These findings will also play a vital part in continuing to develop ways to encourage would-be owners to do their research and to help them understand the potential health and welfare issues that badly bred Pugs can face. We aim to curb the increasing numbers of rogue breeders, who are outside of any sphere of influence and are producing dogs with no regard for welfare and continue to urge would-be owners and breeders to think carefully about any breeding or buying decisions when it comes to Pugs, and make use of health testing, evidence-based resources and expert advice available on The Kennel Club website. Vet teams see pugs with these distressing health problems — from breathing difficulties to eye ulcers and painful spine abnormalities - in veterinary practices across the UK on a daily basis. While these extreme, unhealthy characteristics remain, we will continue to strongly recommend potential owners do not buy brachycephalic breeds such as pugs. Caring for your Pug Pugs can be highly entertaining dogs due to their big personalities and clownish nature. They generally do well in family environments where they have lots of company all of the time as they love to spend time with everybody. Pugs and barking As with any dog, your Pug is likely to make noise in one form or another. How much your dog barks will be down to them as an individual. Training and socialisation When it comes to training Pugs, although they are a clever breed they can also be very strong willed. Training needs to be ongoing and firm but fair. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. Pay close attention to the folds in their skin, as these are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections if left damp. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and play with dogs with care and kindness, to prevent any issues. Always supervise children and vulnerable people with your Pug and make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. Pugs and other pets Pugs are known for getting along well with other pets and dogs. Introductions still need to be done carefully, though, just in case. Good, kind training will also help them become well-rounded dogs that keep calm in new situations. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily food allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards for breeding. See our advice on what you need to know about flat faced pets and how to choose a healthier pedigree pet. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, some centres will vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will have already neutered the dogs they rehome where appropriate. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or if your dog outgrows them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catching any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. If you are having difficulty with veterinary costs, you can check if you are eligible for treatment at PDSA here. A group of Pugs is called a grumble! Pugs are an ancient breed, dating back to Ancient China where they were bred for Emperors. Pugs were bred to be companions, which is why they love people so much. Getting a Pug Do plenty of research before you get a Pug. Although they are loveable and friendly, they are sadly likely to get a lot of health issues more so than many other breeds. Rehoming centres There are plenty of rescue centres across the country where you may find a Pug. Breed-specific rescues specialising in Pugs are out there too. Good rescue centres should let you know of any existing health and behaviour problems. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will have been well socialised and have all necessary health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards. Not sure if a Pug is the right pet for you? To understand the impacts more, the study looked at 4, pugs and 21, dogs of other breeds in the U. A pug dog stands in the exhibition hall on the final day of the annual Crufts dog show at the National Exhibition Centre on March 13, in Birmingham, England. In addition, .However, pugs were found to have a reduced risk for seven disorders, including heart murmurs, wounds and aggression compared to other dog breeds. But ultimately the study found that pugs' predisposition to disease significantly outweighed their disease protections. It concluded that pugs have critical health challenges and that the "highly differing heath profiles between Pugs and other dogs in the UK suggest that the Pug has diverged substantially from mainstream dog breeds and can no longer be considered as a typical dog from a health perspective. And they're just as popular across the pond. The American Kennel Club currently lists them as the 28th most popular dog breed out of breeds in the U. But experts warn dog-lovers of the increased health issues brachycephalic breeds like pugs, French bulldogs and English bulldogs experience, and say to consider the health of the animal when looking for a new furry friend. Earlier this year, Norway went so far as to ban the breeding of certain dogs, including English bulldogs and cavalier King Charles spaniels, for health reasons after an animal rights group petitioned an Oslo court, according to USA Today. More from CBS News. In some cases, this may involve medications, exercise, and weight management. Problem 5: Patellar Luxation Joint Problem Patellar luxation is a common health problem in pugs, affecting the knee joint. In addition, the kneecap, or patella, can become dislocated due to weak ligaments that attach to the thigh bone. Signs: Symptoms of patellar luxation include limping and pain in the knee area. To help prevent this condition, it is important to keep your pug healthy and fit, as excess weight puts extra strain on the ligaments. Treatment: If your dog is diagnosed with patellar luxation, treatment usually involves surgery. Fortunately, many dogs that undergo surgery fully recover and lead a normal, active life. Taking preventive measures like proper diet and exercise will help keep your pug healthy and also help extend its lifespan. Cause: The disease occurs when the blood supply to the head of the femur bone becomes restricted, causing the bone to soften and die. As the bone deteriorates, it can become distorted and cause discomfort when moving or using the leg. Although there is no single cause for LCPD, genetics may be a factor, as well as poor nutrition or excessive exercise during growth periods. Signs: Dogs with LCPD often show signs of pain, such as limping, favoring one side of the body, reluctance to move or climb stairs, or an unwillingness to bear weight on the affected leg. LCPD is most commonly seen in young dogs under two years old, and pugs are particularly prone to developing this condition. Treatment: Treatment involves surgery to remove the damaged bone and insert a prosthetic joint. With proper care and treatment, dogs can recover from LCPD and live a long and healthy life. Problem 7: Hip Dysplasia Joint Problem Hip dysplasia is a common health problem for pugs and other breeds of dogs. It is a disorder that causes the hip joint to become weak and unstable, leading to pain and lameness. Hip dysplasia is a genetically inherited condition that affects how the femur fits into the hip socket. Signs: Symptoms of hip dysplasia may include decreased activity level, difficulty getting up or climbing stairs, hind limb lameness, and reluctance to move. In order to keep your pug healthy and prevent or slow down the onset of hip dysplasia, it is important to provide proper nutrition, regular exercise, and an appropriate amount of weight. Treatments: Several treatments are available for hip dysplasia, depending on the severity of the condition. Some of these treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, orthopedic surgery, and weight control. Problem 8: Phosphorus Deficiency Metabolic Problem Pug dogs are prone to various common health problems, ranging from mild to serious. One of the most serious is phosphorus deficiency, also known as hypophosphatemia. This condition can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Signs: Pugs with phosphorus deficiency may have several symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, seizures, lethargy, and anorexia. They may also exhibit signs of dehydration and depression. Treatments: Fortunately, phosphorus deficiency can be managed and treated with dietary changes and supplements. Your vet can recommend a balanced diet for your pug that includes higher levels of phosphorus-rich foods like liver and whole grains. In addition to dietary changes, your vet may also recommend supplements containing phosphorus or Vitamin D3, which can help restore normal levels of phosphorus in the body. Problem 9: Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus Bloating Stomach Problem Gastric dilatation-volvulus commonly referred to as bloat , is a common and potentially life-threatening health issue among pugs. Cause: It occurs when the stomach twists or fills with gas or fluid, blocking blood flow to other vital organs and causing the abdomen to become distended. Signs: Symptoms of bloat can include retching and unsuccessful attempts at vomiting, restlessness, abdominal pain, and excessive salivation. Treatments: Treatment typically includes stabilizing the dog, surgery to untwist the stomach and possibly other treatments to reduce the risk of recurrence. In addition, pugs should not be overfed, as this can increase their risk of developing bloat. With proper care and prevention, pugs can live a long and healthy life with minimal health concerns. Problem Obesity Metabolic Problem Obesity is a common health problem for pugs and one of the most serious pug health concerns. In order to keep your pug healthy, it is important to ensure they are not overfed and getting enough exercise. Treatments: Pugs, like all dogs, need a balanced diet that consists of quality protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your pug receives adequate nutrients to prevent obesity. In addition to a healthy diet, pugs need regular exercise to maintain weight. So ensure you provide your pug with plenty of playtimes and walks to keep them active. This will help your pug stay fit and healthy and reduce their chances of developing obesity-related illnesses. Fitting a whole lot of personality into a small, stocky package — Pugs are fun-loving, affectionate, and cheekily wilful. Well known for their lack of impulse control when it comes to food, Pugs require a healthy, nutritionally balanced diet to keep their waistlines in check. Daily exercise also helps your Pug to stay healthy, but be sure not to overdo it — just a little each day is enough. Respiratory Issues Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome BAOS occurs in dogs like Pugs with a reduced skull length, and results from excess soft tissue in their airways which may obstruct airflow. Symptoms can include your dog gasping for air and struggling to breathe during even moderate amounts of exercise. Surgery can sometimes be required; however, the impact of this condition may be reduced by keeping your pug cool in hot weather, avoiding excessive exercise, providing lots of fresh water, and keeping your dog at a healthy weight. Eye Problems The bulging eyes of pugs are unfortunately prone to several serious eye issues which can cause chronic irritation and pain. With their large eyes, Pugs are at a high risk of accidentally damaging their eyes by running into obstacles. Symptoms of other eye issues include bumping into furniture and other objects, a discoloured eye discharge, weeping eyes, discoloured spots on the eye, and any unusual appearances in or around the eye. Skin Disorders Pugs are prone to allergies that cause itchy skin. In addition, their wrinkled folds of skin can trap dirt and moisture, providing an inviting place for bacterial skin infections Pyoderma to develop. Pyoderma is a bacterial infection with topical symptoms such as pimples, small red bumps, and blisters filled with blood. It usually occurs near the lips, feet and skin folds in Pugs. Bone and Joint Problems Pugs have small legs that support a sturdy body, and this unique musculoskeletal structure predisposes them to bone and joint problems. Luxating Patella is a condition that causes the knee to become dislocated. Signs that your Pug is experiencing this condition are hopping, jumping, favouring one leg, and having difficulty getting up and down. Severe cases may require surgery. This condition can be brought on by excess weight, so be sure to feed your dog a healthy, well-balanced diet. Pugs may experience spinal problems, which in turn places pressure on their spinal cord, resulting in pain and possible loss of back leg function. Seizures are the main symptom of Epilepsy, which is not uncommon in Pugs, and can be treated through medication and regular vet check-ups. The main symptom of PDE is seizures, but dogs suffering from this condition may also seem lethargic, listless or display a lack of muscle coordination. In consultation with your vet, medication can be used to control the seizures and reduce associated inflammation. Most Pugs live a long and happy life, even if these health issues need to be managed through appropriate vet care and a dedicated treatment plan. Always visit your vet at the first sign of symptoms or behavioural changes in your Pug, as quick action will help ensure your furry friend can get back to being their happy, adorable selves as soon as possible. Do not rely on the information on our website as an alternative to medical advice from your veterinary doctor. If you think your pet may be suffering from a medical condition, seek immediate medical attention. References Bondi Vet. Love My Pet. Pug Dog Breed. Pug Village. Health Issues. Our breeding program has earned the the highest level of accomplishments that a kennel in the United States can achieve. Nadelhaus breeds purebred German Shepherds year round and we also import both German Shepherd puppies and adults direct from Europe for our clients. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments.
