This means they do not need to be bathed too often. When you do bathe them, be sure to wash out all the shampoo and conditioner. This can easily be held onto by their hair, and if left behind can irritate their skin. But brushing is only the beginning of the grooming regime these pups need, not all of which will be such a pleasant bonding experience. They need their teeth brushed at least three times a week. Thankfully, this can be partially achieved with dental chew toys. They should also have their ears cleaned regularly, especially if they have the floppy ears of a retriever. Bacteria, yeast, and parasites live in the ear canal. Finally, make sure to trim their nails on a regular basis, at least monthly. This is often a job best left to the experts, as it is easy to cut too deep and hurt your pooch, which will only make them less cooperative next time as they will develop a fear of the clippers pretty quickly. Leading trainers taught that there were only two choices: either your dog was the alpha, or you were the alpha. However, we know differently now. For a dog, there is no such thing as alpha, or dominance, or pack leader, or even anything similar to any of these concepts. Generally, a female Labsky would eat half a cup of food less than a male as they are smaller. If you are feeding a mixed diet of dry food and raw food meat , you should lower the amount of kibble you give your Labsky. You can find weight range feeding guides on the back of most packets of kibble and you should refer to this when working out how much to feed your dog. From picking them up at the breeder at the age of 8 weeks until they are 6 months old, you should be feeding them three to four times a day. From 6 months to 1 year you can feed them twice a day. It is recommended to keep your Labsky on the same kibble the breeder has been feeding it for a few weeks and them slowly wean them off onto your preferred kibble or diet. It is important to switch dog food gradually otherwise it will cause digestive problems. Then from the age of 7 they can be moved onto special senior dog kibble as they are entering the 2nd half of their life. It is also a good idea to balance out kibble with fresh food such as chicken, beef or fish. Take a photo of the kibble bag so you can go out and buy it for yourself. Unfortunately this is because a Husky Lab mix is a moderate to heavy shedder. They have a double coat where the undercoat sheds seasonally as well as lighter, regular shedding throughout the year. Brushing A Labsky As Labskies shed so much, it is really important to stay on top of regular, frequent brushing to remove dead or loose fur. Every year during spring and autumn their undercoat will start falling out. This is when Labsky owners need to start daily brushing with an undercoat rake brush to manage the heavy shedding. It is also useful to have lint rollers hanging around so you can remove the fur from your clothes as well! Technically you can shave a Husky Lab Mix however it is not recommended. Shaving is not recommended for double coated dogs as it exposes them to sunburn and long term hair loss. The undercoat keep them warm in winter and it also keeps cool air close to their skin during hot weather. The outer layer of their coat also is a barrier from UV rays which prevents sun burn and reduces the risk of skin cancer. It is best if this is split into multiple sessions. For example, taking your Husky Lab Mix to the off-lead park before work and then going on a walk after work. Husky Lab Mixes also need the opportunity to run off leash in a backyard. If they are properly introduced to water from a young age they will learn to love swimming. It is very important to properly introduce your Labsky to the water because if they are improperly introduced they will likely avoid it at all costs in the future. A shallow dog friendly lake with a gradually inclined shoreline is ideal place to introduce your Labsky to swimming. Alternatively, if you are at the beach watch out for rips and large waves. Get your dog used to the water. Encourage your Husky Lab Mix to walk into the water to a place where they can still comfortably stand up. Reward your dog for going into the water with a treat. Provide support. When their feet lift off the ground assume a supportive position by placing one hand beneath their rump. The most important thing when teaching your dog to swim is to ensure their bottom is aligned with their head. You can also get your Labsky a dog life jacket to help them swim. Let your Labsky go. Once your dog has build up confidence point them towards the shoreline and let them swim in. Stay close by your dog and correct their swimming technique if their rump starts sinking.
