Husband and wife owners and head trainers Steve Koven and Jean Damon have been training dogs and working with dog owners for over 20 years. Our business is family-run; raising and training dogs is our full-time occupation. We are located in Huntingdon, Tennessee. We do not believe in cookie-cutter dog training. Each puppy is hand-picked for temperament from high-quality AKC registered bloodlines from breeders in our area. Our goal is to provide the highest quality of training for each individual puppy. All the parents have been DNA tested via Embark or similar genetic screening test to ensure the pups are healthy. Our companion dog training covers behavior and social skills with people and other dogs, crate training, and obedience. The obedience training covers all commands on and off-leash. Training starts as soon as we pick up the pups from their breeders. They go through a thorough training regimen for 12 weeks, and graduate the family companion program at around 6 months of age, when they will be ready to interface with their new owners. For the twelve weeks that our pups are in training, we are with them all day, every day; caring for them, training them, playing with them. The pups have training school 6 days a week, and we get a 4 hour break on the 7th day. Then for the next three weeks, we are individually interfacing each puppy with the new family, one pup every day, while continuing to train and look after the rest of the class. Listed below are the commands that we cover. This means that having a well-trained dog requires consistent reinforcement of commands and good behavior. It is imperative that you, as the new dog owner s , continue to exercise your new family member daily, as well as routine obedience workouts times a week, and always follow up on your commands. Because of the amount of training already done with our dogs, this will be relatively easy for you to accomplish. On your scheduled pick-up day, you and your family will spend the day at our facility in Huntingdon interfacing with your new best friend, learning how to work with and train your dog. We are located roughly 2. The most common way clients arrange their interface day and get their pups back home is to drive both ways. There are hotels in our area. Another option to save a little travel time is to fly here, rent a vehicle, and drive back home with their pup. Upon completion of this program, you will receive a certificate of completion of training for obedience, as well as all your training gear. You will receive a 6 ft leather lead, training collar, nylon choker, and light lines to continue your off-leash work. Returning clients who have purchased a trained Lab pup from us in the past and gone through the interface do not have to do so again. You have the option of either interfacing a second time for a refresher, or simply coming to pick up your pup and head back home, after going through the paperwork and getting the graduation picture taken. You will be taking home a high quality pup with everything done for you: crate-trained, current on vaccinations for the next year, and obedience trained; a calm, well-behaved dog ready to be integrated into your family. As a teenager, I taught Bonita to stay in the boundary of the acre yard - long before invisible fencing was invented! She ran and played there safely until she developed painful hip dysplasia for which we mercifully put her to rest. Because of Bonita's early death and suffering, we strongly believe in the importance of health clearances such as OFA for hips and elbows for all of our breeding dogs. We trained several of Ebony's puppies as hunting dogs which did very well for extreme hunters. Soon thereafter Dakota Rose, was purchased from another breeder. Dakota taught us so much about the Labrador breed. Her pedigree went up to the lovely Sandylands lines from England. She was a beautiful English type of labrador with a calm and affectionate personality. We showed her and competed in obedience with her. Today Dakota's legacy lives on through her daughter Sophie and granddaughter Abby. Her lines are so biddable and intelligent. Sadly, over the years we realized Dakota's lines carried diabetes. Hence in we retired using this line. She is living out her senior years here with us. Her wonderfully trainable and friendly lines continue in her children, grand children, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Around a couple approached us asking if we would be willing to train one of our puppies for them. They wanted to purchase a trained puppy local to the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. We had been asked this prior to this but couldn't conceptualize what families wanted. This couple was different, they were very specific. When we perused these websites, we realized we had already trained our keeper puppies the same commands which those kennels train. Hence we started what was then the Adventurous Companion training. Soon thereafter we were asked to train dogs for therapy which developed the Helpful Companion program. Along the way we ran into infertility issues with our own dogs so took in others dogs of a variety breeds. We found the best success came from our own carefully bred lines although the other dogs also gained a lot of obedience along the way. In early we combined the Adventurous and Helpful Companion programs to form the Versatile Companion puppy. This was done because we often ended up training all the of the puppies all commands for these programs anyway. Our love and knowledge of puppy raising is a fully used talent as puppies stay with us until months old. Prior to training our puppies, we never felt really comfortable letting pups go home at weeks old. New families often worked full time, we feel puppies need more interaction than such a family can provide. Sometimes families did not take time or know how to train which let to them being discontent with their puppy. Research shows many dogs end in shelters due to lack of training. By keeping puppies at Ganderwood for thorough socialization and training, we have found higher quality families for our puppies and feel puppies are truly ready for their new homes once they leave. Since breedings are done first and foremost for ourselves for show and competition, the remaining puppies which we train and sell are beautiful conformationally, intelligent, and highly biddable. Our puppies are great for busy professionals who have time to play with and exercise a dog but not time or know how for housebreaking or training a puppy. Families with a special needs child find our trained dogs very helpful, these include children with autism where trained dog behaviors calm the child. Often active retirees purchase a trained puppy as they have trained previous puppies and are well aware of the work, they have earned the right to skip the training stages and appreciate a well behaved young dog. Some of our trained dogs are owned by an individual who takes them to facilities where they work. These facilities include senior centers, mentally handicapped adult vocational schools, counselors, pastors who counsel children, etc. Some of the dogs also hunt. Over all the years we have found puppies quickly bond to their new families. Because they are potty trained, hence let out often, and trained a little every time they are fed and let out, they are very people oriented. Our training is done with treats and praise to keep the young puppies excited to learn and upbeat with their attitudes. Inexperienced trainers can ruin young puppies so some people think a puppy shouldn't start training until 6 months old but with our carefully gaged training methods, our puppies form wonderful habits before bad habits begin. As some of these trained puppies come back for boarding we find they all retain the things they have learned. Part of our training is to train new families how to handle and maintain training for their trained puppy. Over the years, we've changed our instruction book many times and spend more time with families upon puppy pick up. We give advice to families for the lifetime of their trained puppy. By training all of our puppies, we get to enjoy them longer while helping busy families. It's a win win situation for all involved. We thank God we've been able to bless so many families and facilities with our trained puppies. It is a lot of hard work but so worth it! During this time, they have learned that good breeding is not seldom. This is why they conduct DNA genetic testing on the mating Labs, research pedigrees, and perform x-rays. At other times, they fly in semen from other states to guarantee the best quality future Labs. They have produced family dogs, show dogs, hunting dogs, and service dogs. If you want to reserve a puppy from Humehill, they will send you a questionnaire and a deposit contract. The puppies leave the facility after they are eight weeks old. Prior to this, the puppies are taken to the vet for a checkup, dewormed, microchipped, and receive their first vaccine. They focus on producing and raising genetically quality dogs, a reason why the parents undergo Embark tests. In addition, they raise the puppies in an acre home with fenced-in yards instead of kennels. The dogs also have a large pond to swim or play in. These are Kennel kept dogs and much time has been spent potty training her and getting her used to living in a home. As well as obedience training. Roxy is responsive and eager to learn We are almost there. Her walking and sit commands were perfect from day 1. The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail. Black and Tan This is the color most of us think of when we picture a German Shepherd dog. With a rich tan undercarriage and a black face and back, this color of GSD has been around since the very first was officially registered back in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Although Horand von Grafrath was a little darker than the modern black and tan GSD, the ancestry is evident. With their luxurious white coats, these pale dogs look more like Golden Retrievers with erect ears. Despite their popularity, like the white German Shepherd, the blue has been a cause of controversion in the Shepherd world because recessive dilution gene comes with inbreeding practices and health issues. Blue German Shepherds may appear gray or even silver and are sometimes mistaken for a Blue Belgian Malinois. Isabella This unusual coat color variation is another washout as far the AKC is concerned, which is a shame given how striking it is. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. What is the Rarest Color of the German Shepherd? The rarest color of German Shepherd is the isabella due to the recessive combination of liver and blue. You will have to search for a long time to get such a puppy — and his price will likely be high as well! What is the Best Color for a German Shepherd? The best color for a German Shepherd in the show ring is black and tan, followed by sable. If you are not planning on showing your dog through the AKC, you can pick any color you like. This is not based on any actual working abilities though and more of a myth that has been passed on through generations. What is the Original Color of a German Shepherd? As German Shepherd dogs were bred as working dogs, the original breeders focused on temperature rather than appearance. The original color of working German Shepherds was sable. The most traditional color in the show ring is black and tan. While you should pick the coloring you like the most, make sure to not just choose your dog based on his looks. German Shepherds are prone to developing back and hip issues. Before buying a puppy for his color, make sure that his breeder selects for health first and color second!
