French Bulldogs are short-haired and have a single coat; so, fortunately, they do not shed as much as most breeds. Brushing their coat regularly with a rubber brush will remove any dead or loose hair — which in turn, will reduce the amount of shedding. The are prone to becoming damp and this is where infection can result. They also can collect dirt and food causing infections also. Utah has a very dry climate, so for us it is sufficient to regularly clean their folds with baby shampoo and then thoroughly dry them with a dry cloth. Frenchies with large, ropey wrinkling in a hot, humid environment would require the most attention; whereas, a lightly wrinkled Frenchie in a cool, dry environment would require the least. However, if you want to save time and money, it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain — nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. Some Frenchie owners, who have dogs with dark toenails, cut them once every week or two so that they only have to cut off a little at a time, avoiding any fear of cutting into the quick. To do this, hang a bell by the door at pug level, of course and use treats to get them comfortable with it. Establish a routine Pugs are little dogs, and that means they have little bladders, too. Get in the habit of taking them out as soon as you wake up, shortly after they eat a meal, after playtime, before you go to bed, and every hour or so in between. Each time you take your pug outside, return to the same spot. No luck? Bring them back inside and try again in 20 minutes. Enlarged prostate gland. Relevant for male Pugs, this can develop due to age-related hormone changes but can also be due to bacterial infection or even cancer. Other causes. While rare, an array of other conditions can cause constipation including trauma to the pelvic area, rectal tumors, and certain neurological disorders. For seniors, in particular, arthritic pain in the hips or back can lead to trouble with finding a comfortable stance to push out stools. This hesitation can cause stools back up. At-home Remedies to Treat a Pug with Constipation Note that with these suggestions, the more you incorporate the better. Rule out serious issues. Before you begin to treat your Pug for constipation at home, it is imperative that serious underlying reasons are ruled out. For this reason, if your Pug displays any of the following signs, seek immediate veterinary assistance: Panicked behavior Dry heaving or vomiting particularly of clear fluids or foamy liquid Excessive saliva refusal to drink water or eat food 2. Just leading your puppy or dog to the water bowl more often may be all that's needed. However, if struggling to get your Pug to drink enough is an ongoing issue, there are additional things that can help: Clean the water bowl every day with hot water and dish soap. Do not offer unfiltered tap water. In the average glass of America's drinking water, you'll find fluoride toxic to dogs , arsenic, pesticides, prescription medications, and a slew of other toxins and chemicals including known carcinogens. Offer bottled spring water or serve water from a filtering device like the Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher. Bring water along when you take your Pug for walks, stopping every 15 to 20 minutes for hydration. If your Pug really needs to be motivated, consider obtaining a water fountain; dogs are usually tempted by the sound and sight of falling water. Many dogs find it fun to chase an ice cube around and many dogs love the taste of fruit. Fruits that have high water content include blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries which are also a great source of antioxidants. Increase daily exercise. If you've been skipping daily walks with your Pug, it's time to get back into a regular schedule. And, if your Pug is already being walked at least twice per day and has some light cardio sessions with you, such as fetch, try adding on at least 10 additional minutes of physical activity. The body maintains a balance of gut bacteria that aids in digestion. If this balance is thrown off it can cause intestinal issues including constipation or diarrhea. One problem that arises if she is not spayed prior to her first heat is the risk of Pyometra. In intact females the effect of sex hormones can result in over stimulation of cells in the uterus which eventually may result in a severe E coli infection and a pus infection in the uterus. Signs of Pyometra can include lethargy, increased thirst, increased urination, not eating, a foul odor coming from their behind, draining of Pus from the vulva, excess licking of the vulva, collapse or fever related to signs of shock. If you observe any of these symptoms in your Lab after her heat cycle take her to the Vet right away as Pyometra could result in death for her if her uterus ruptures and causes a severe infection bacterial infection in the blood stream and abdomen. Other issues that present themselves if you leave your female Labrador to have a heat while in tact are cancer related. On average a female Lab will have her first heat around six months of age so spaying her in advance of this will help avoid most issues related to cancer such as mammary tumors. The statistic available at the time of writing this is that Labradors who are spayed prior to their first heat only have a 0. Risks for other cancers such as uterine also decrease when they are spayed prior to their first heat. It is important to point out that not all mammary tumors are cancerous and actually most of them are not cancerous, but there is no reason to encourage these tumors simply because they are not cancerous. The down side to spaying before your girl is fully grown is that her hormonal balance will be altered. In order for her to grow naturally she needs the hormones available to her naturally. Altering this natural balance could result in development problems with her joints and result in hip dysplasia or other joint issues or tendon ruptures. So, to sum this all up for female Labradors, at present it appears that fixing them early can greatly reduce the risk of certain types of cancer while increasing the risk of joint-related problems. Good Labrador Retriever breeders would do this in their breeding programs, however, I have never seen an aggressive Labrador who has been trained and cared for properly. Normally an aggressive dog will be neglected or abused which ends up training them to act that way. Neutering may help to dampen or eliminate any behaviors that are related to the hormones. So there are many points that require your consideration, advice from your breeder and advice from your Veterinarian.
