Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Read more : Choosing the Best Collar and Harness for a Pug Grooming supplies — The thick coat of a Pug sheds heavily and brushing it well and offering baths on a regular basis can help control shedding. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! Boxers are not a good choice for first time dog owners because they are very independent thinkers which can make training them more of a challenge. They are extremely high energy and intelligent dogs as such owners must have the time needed to socialise and train their canine companion correctly from a young age. Owners also need to understand the specific needs of a powerful dominant and high prey drive dog so they never get the best of them. What about the boxer's prey drive? What about the boxer's playfulness? They remain very playful throughout their lives which is another reason they are such fun to have around in a home environment. What about the boxer's adaptability? Boxers need to have enough space to express themselves and therefore they are not suited to apartment living. They do a whole lot better when they have a large back garden to romp around in as often as they can making sure the fencing is secure enough to keep an athletic Boxer safely in. What about the boxer's excessive barking? Do Boxers like water? Because of their build and their shorter noses Boxers find it harder to stay afloat which is part of the reason why care should always be taken when these dogs are around swimming pools or ponds. Care should be taken when walking a Boxer that does like swimming anywhere near more dangerous water courses just in case they decide to leap in. Are Boxers good watchdogs? What about the boxer's vaccinations? At only a year old we cannot figure out how this healthy hunk ended up there. Wallace is already neutered, vaccinated and almost 50lbs! Welcome Wallace! A good samaritan saved them before they were hit by speeding cars and took them to the local shelter. Their microchips were not registered and no one came to claim them. We thought someone must be missing these beauties but it appears they are another case of abandonment. They do not need to be adopted together. Could you be the person to offer this boy the loving environment he deserves? Meet Constantine! This supremely handsome fella is searching for a home where he can feel safe and loved. Constantine has shown some curiosity towards cats, and he might indulge in a playful chase, so a slow introduction would be best. His care team also believes he may have been beaten up or picked on by other dogs. Constantine has received all necessary veterinary care, but the wounds on his leg are still visible and healing. Do you have the patience, time and commitment a young, energetic boxer needs? Link below to apply to adopt Constantine! Same sex bully breed aggression is a real thing, and all too often an owner having to surrender a dog they love dearly is the unfortunate outcome, but the only solution. Brown is an absolute joy of a dog! He knows his basic commands, will give paw and lives to be close to his people. He is 4. He is kind to humans and kids, but has never been exposed to cats or dogs other than his k-9 sibling with whom he is fighting. At this time we feel a home with no other pets would be best for Brown, but will consider an experienced home with a docile female dog. Ellen is home full time where she spends most of her day with them from the moment they arrive until they day they go to their new homes. Most importantly, our puppies are center stage in the middle of family life here at Goldenwind. This offers our Texas Golden Retriever puppies optimum opportunities for both human and littermate socialization which is a necessity at this stage of their lives. When the weaning process starts, the puppies are moved to a large playpen in our living room. There they can hear and see everything around them. This includes loud televisions, stereo music, vacuums, doorbells, telephones ringing, doors opening and closing, thunder and rain sounds, kitchen pots and pans clanging, etc. When our Golden Retriever puppies are ready for their new homes at approximatley 8 weeks of age, they have been exposed to most household situations and noises that they will have with their new familes. All that means is that the animal was not quite 24 months of age when the test was performed. Therefore, you can request copies of the hip, elbow, heart and eye reports for the sire and dam of any litter or puppy that is offered for sale. A reputable Golden Retriever breeder will be able to produce the OFA certificates or reports from a board certified radiologist, board certified cardiologist and a board certified ophthalmologist. Therefore, Reputable Texas Golden Retriever puppy breeders have tested sires and dams for hips, elbows, heart and eye disease. Additionally, a Board Certified Canine Ophthalmologist exams the eyes. Reputable Golden Retriever Breeders will follow the American Kennel Club Code Of Sportsmanship One would think that it should go without saying that Sportsmanship is very important in any competitive sport. Actions truly can speak louder than words. We hope that you will see that with any Golden Retriever exhibitor you may meet.
Golden Retrievers have a double coat, consisting of an undercoat and an overcoat. The combination coat is designed to keep the dog at a comfortable temperature in any season. If you were to trim the entire coat, it would inhibit this natural heating and cooling system. You should not need to use clippers to trim a Golden Retriever. The edges usually get a lot of fuzzy hair growth, so that needs to be cleanly trimmed away with scissors. Next, trim in between your Golden Retriever's toes. Take your comb and brush up the hair between its toes. Then trim it away at the level of the top of the pup's feet. Then comb it all back down. It should now be above the level of the dog's pads. Also inspect the Golden Retriever's pads while you are focusing on their feet. Apply Vaseline if you find any cracked pads and decide whether your pup needs its nails trimmed. Trim the fur on the back of the dog's legs with your thinning shears. You don't need to remove all the longer fur that grows near their rear end, but you want the coat to look balance and symmetrical. Focus your attention on trimming off fuzzy and unkempt fur. The fur on the back of the legs will be longer than the fur on the front of the legs. The hair on the back of the legs should be a few inches long, flaring out a bit behind the dog, while the fur on the front will lay flat against the dog. Begin by using your thinning shears around the dog's shoulders if a ridge of hair has formed there. Then move your attention to the front of the dog, thinning the hair on its chest until it lies flat. The length of your dog's fur will vary. A Golden Retriever doesn't have a short, tight coat, but instead has some length to it. When trimming your dog's coat, focus more on trimming fuzzy and unkempt fur, instead of trimming to a specific length. If you are unsure if you have removed enough hair, comb the coat out and see if the coat is lying flat. The goal is to have a nice flat coat that is balanced and symmetrical. As you trim, move the thinning shears with the direction of the growth. Using the thinning shears to trim the neck and chest will give the dog a more natural look. Thin the fur around the front and back of the ears. This will be important to keeping your dog's ears healthy. Then trim the fur on the ears, taking stray hairs off the top of them with the thinning shears. Don't make the tail fur too short. You just want to trim the length by tapering it from the base to the tip, using thinning shears to make it look natural. Get this from Amazon here. Brush Your Golden Retriever Brushing your Golden Retriever before you give them a bath is like picking up toys off the floor before you vacuum. It gets the knots, mats, dead fur, and some of the dirt out so that you can get in there and clean the healthy fur. Click here to read about the best brushes for Golden Retrievers. Next, start cleaning them with the shampoo. Read this article for more information about which type of shampoo is best for your Golden Retriever. Their coats are thick and easily trap soap — and if that happens, it can lead to skin problems. Dry them off with a towel as much as you can microfiber towels work really well , then use a dog blow dryer to get even more water out of their coats. Pro tip: to get your dog used to the blow dryer take it step by step. Golden Retrievers have a double coat that protects them from both the cold and the heat. Yes, even in the hot summer, their double coat keeps them cool, so never shave them. Another issue is that furry pads can cause them to not get good traction on wood or tile floors, which can also cause joint issues. Clip their paw fur to be about even with their pads. After this step, grooming their coat is finally finished! We accidentally cut the very end of the quick once with Oliver and were very thankful we had some of this powder with us we felt terrible and yes, Oliver got lots of treats as an apology. Goldens have big, floppy ears that are adorable, but can sometimes cause ear infections because they easily trap in moisture and heat. Clean their ears with ear cleaner for dogs and some cotton balls. Brush Their Teeth The final part of grooming your Golden is to brush their teeth. This kit has a toothbrush, a brush to slip over your finger, and toothpaste for dogs: Now the next question you probably have is this: how often do I need to groom my dog? Other Goldens with lots of fluff may need to be brushed more often. Before I go out on a walk with Oliver, I take the brush out and leave it on the doorstep. Now a lot of people ask about deshedding their Golden Retriever with a tool such as the Furminator. And finally, one more tip about brushing your Golden is to take this opportunity of brushing and rubbing them all over to check for lumps, cuts, or any other abnormal spots. You can learn more about the best brushes for Golden Retrievers here. How Often To Bathe Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers have natural oils that protect their skin and coats, so bathing them too often can strip them of this oil and leave their skin prone to drying out or getting infections. Most people bathe their Golden retrievers every months. Learn more about how to give your Golden Retriever a bath here. We use this ear cleaner for Oliver. For example, a dog that runs or walks on concreate will naturally grind their nails down more than one that only walks on grass, dirt, or carpet. First, make sure that their pads are not dry or cracked. Walking on hot concrete or road salt are two things that can cause this to happen. If you notice this happening, talk to your veterinarian about it. Another thing is to keep an eye on the fur between their pads. In addition to the tips above, you can help take care of their teeth by bringing them in for a teeth cleaning from your veterinarian. Plus, fish oil may already be in their food, so there may be no need to supplement with it. Many people take their Goldens to get professionally groomed every few months. An unhappy 75 lb Golden Retriever in the shower is not easy to manage, but if you groom them often as puppies and pair it with positive rewards such as treats and praise, your puppy will enjoy grooming or at least tolerate it and it will be easy for you. Conclusion Grooming your Golden Retriever is so important because it can keep them looking their best while also keeping them healthy. Have any questions about how to groom your Golden Retriever? Hair clippers Grooming Table or yoga mat on an old table that can support your dog's weight Begin with a washed, clean dog: Bathe your Golden Retriever and condition their fur to remove mats. You can trim their fur wet or dry, but it's typically easier to do it once they've dried off. If your dog isn't afraid of blow dryers, you can use one to speed up the drying process. Always use a brush before grooming the dog to remove any tangles in their fur. Brushing beforehand will also remove any dirt and debris. Start with the ears: Use your clippers to gently trim the dog's ears, brushing after each pass. You may need to repeat this process, but don't remove all the hair. Instead, the goal is to thin it and make it all an even length. When you're done with the back of the ears, you can move to the front, toward the face. Most dogs won't need much trimming here, and you should never trim the inside of the ear bare. Remember, the fur around the ear is meant to protect it from debris, so you should only trim anything that's longer or out of place. However, most Goldens don't need their back fur trimmed as it will mostly lay flat on their bodies. If you see any out-of-place fur or mats you missed during brushing, you may have to use your clippers to cut it out. Then the tail: A Golden Retriever's tail doesn't need to be trimmed frequently. These dogs have full tails, so there's no reason to dramatically cut the fur on their tail. Instead, you can trim the tail up to the length of the hock, the joint located on the back leg below the knee. Instead, they should have a feathery coat underbelly, elbows, and tail, to keep their look. A Golden Retriever shaved will not have protection from the elements during hot or cold weather. Remember, your Golden Retriever has a double coat that helps regulate their temperature and protect them from the elements. Shaving your dog will not reduce its chances of getting fleas or ticks or reduce shedding. Additionally, if you shave the coat too short, you can damage the hair follicle, so the coat will never properly grow back. Instead, you should groom them with clippers only. Clipping your Golden Retriever's nails When your dog's fur is trimmed, you can move on to nail clipping, as long as they're being tolerant. Depending on your dog's attitude toward grooming, you may have to trim their nails another day since all this attention can be anxiety-inducing for some dogs. When you're ready to begin nail clipping, you'll need to have a set of nail clippers. There are several types of nail clippers to choose from, including: Guillotine Clippers: These clippers allow you to place your dog's nail inside the hole, and the blade comes across the nail like the blade of a guillotine. Unfortunately, these clippers aren't right for every dog because they can be dull and cause pressure that breaks the nail. Additionally, it can be difficult for you to get your dog's nail in the hole. Scissor Clippers: Scissor clippers are another popular choice because they work like scissors and are ideal for large dogs with thick nails. These clippers allow you to cleanly cut the nail, but they require precision. Nail Grinders: Nail grinders are another popular option if your dog doesn't like nail clippers. Grinders are safer than nail clippers because you won't risk cutting your dog if they move. Instead, they can safely grind away nails. However, one drawback of nail grinders is that the sound can be off-putting to dogs, so they'll need to get used to the noise and vibration of the machine. Additionally, shortening the nails takes much longer, so if your dog has long nails, you're better off using clippers to shorten the nail and grinders to maintain the nails once they're short enough. Unfortunately, many pet parents find it difficult to clip their dog's nails at home, but knowing how to trim your dog's nails is still important because it can help you save money at the groomer's or vet's office. Still, your vet will be willing to do it for you for an extra fee if you need the help. Additionally, you can take your dog to the groomers, where they have tricks and treats to help dogs feel calmer while getting their nails trimmed. When trimming your dog's nails at home, the most important thing to remember is to avoid the quick. Cutting too far into the nail can cut the quick, causing bleeding and pain for your dog, leaving them susceptible to infection. If your dog has dark nails and you can't see the quick, you can look at the underside of the claw and cut off a short portion of the nail. Golden Retriever ear cleaning Since Golden Retrievers are prone to ear infections due to allergies or wet ears after a bath or swim, it's important to clean their ears every few weeks. After the bath is a good time to clean their ears because it's possible you've accidentally gotten water in them, and cleaning will remove the water and dry up the ears to prevent infection. However, even if you don't bathe your dog, you should plan to regularly clean their ears and monitor them for signs of infection. There are several types of ear cleaners on the market, so talk to your vet about the options best for your pet. Once you have an ear-cleaning solution in hand, you can pour a few drops into your dog's ears and massage it. Your dog will then shake their head, so you might see wax or ear-cleaning solution fly out. Having a towel on hand will help you keep the mess to a minimum. Unfortunately, some dogs are sensitive about their ears, especially if they've had or currently have an ear infection. Ear infections are incredibly painful for dogs, so if you're trying to get drops in an infected ear, your dog may try to fight or avoid you. Since all dogs need their ears cleaned regularly, you should get your dog used to ear drops as soon as possible. Reward-based training can help them associate the experience with something positive, making the process easier for everyone. While these items can remove some plaque, they're not as effective as regular brushing at removing plaque. Taking good care of your dog's oral health by brushing their teeth regularly can prevent serious illnesses. Unfortunately, most dogs don't like having their teeth brushed, so starting early in life is important to help them learn to tolerate it. Luckily, you can try a variety of toothbrushes designed for dogs, including a finger toothbrush that allows you to massage their gums while brushing their teeth. Of course, in addition to daily brushing, your dog's teeth should be examined by a vet annually. Depending on your dog's oral health, you may also consider professional teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar to prevent dental disease. Final Notes Golden Retrievers are ideal family pets that make great companions. However, even though they have fun-loving and playful personalities, they still require proper care and grooming. Due to their double coat, Goldens are higher maintenance dogs than other breeds. However, all dogs need to be groomed to prevent serious health problems. Everything from brushing their fur to trimming their nails and cleaning their ears is necessary and can support their overall health. A healthy coat will feel soft to the touch and not excessively oily or have an unpleasant smell, which might indicate yeast build-up or bacterial issues. A dusty appearance or frequent balls of undercoat fur shedding may signal allergies, hormonal imbalances, infections, or other concerns. For heavy shedders, a slicker brush is effective in tackling matting and removing loose, dead hairs. Alternatively, a gentle pin brush works well for regular coat maintenance, but it may struggle with severe matting. Dogs with long coats, like Golden Retrievers, often require more frequent brushing to manage tangling and matting. Many Golden Retriever owners prefer combining a slicker brush with a metal comb to achieve comprehensive grooming results. Can you wash a Golden Retriever every week? Washing a Golden Retriever every week can be excessive and might dry out their skin and coat. Can I use baby wipes on my dog? Baby wipes can be used on a dog for a quick clean-up, but make sure they are fragrance-free and alcohol-free. How do you clean Golden Retriever ears? Gently wipe the inside of the ear, but avoid inserting anything into the ear canal, as this could cause injury. Regular check-ups with a vet can ensure proper ear health. Golden Retriever Grooming Tips: How to Groom a Golden Retriever There is nothing prettier than a Golden Retriever , with their gleaming coat flowing as they move—that is, as long as the dog is well groomed. Thankfully, Golden Retriever grooming does not have to be an arduous task. With some simple tools and minutes a week of brushing, your canine companion can show off their good looks wherever you go. By keeping their coat brushed and combed several times a week, with a bath as needed, shedding will be kept under control, and the development of mats and tangles kept at bay. A dirty, tangled coat is not only unattractive, but it can be uncomfortable for your dog. Tangles pull on sensitive skin and invite sores and irritations to develop. Even if you know how to groom a Golden Retriever under ideal circumstances, if your pet currently has mats and tangles, it is best to have a professional pet groomer remove them for you, then start fresh with regular home care to prevent any future problems. Follow our guide on how to groom a Golden Retriever to keep your Golden looking and feeling their best. Golden Retriever Grooming Supplies The basic Golden Retriever grooming supplies you need for your pet include: a good quality slicker brush a steel comb a spray to help smooth the coat as you work When choosing a brush and comb, you should look for a professional quality tool with nicely finished bristles or teeth. If the bristles and teeth are not smooth, they can scrape the skin and damage the hair. Likewise, this Andis Steel Pet Comb is a professional quality tool that will glide through the coat and give you years of service. I like to use very small training treats, such as Merrick Power Bites Real Texas Beef chewy dog treats , so I can be generous with rewards. Some people keep their grooming tools next to where they sit to watch television and brush their dog while watching a favorite show. Others prefer to brush their pet in a bathroom, laundry room or other space that is not carpeted so they can easily clean the floor afterwards. Start With Spray Begin by spraying the area you will first be working on with a quality coat spray. This will reduce static and help your brush to glide through the coat. A good spray will help get through tangles and leave a pleasing texture and fragrance to the coat. Using Your Slicker Brush I like to work in defined sections—left and right hindquarters, midsection, chest and front legs, head, and tail—to ensure I cover every bit of the dog. For instance, I might spray the left hind leg, and brush everything from the spine down using a slicker brush, focusing on the soft, long hair on the back of the thigh. Spray the area lightly, then use your slicker brush to work in layers, from skin to tip, removing dead coat and small tangles as you go. Pat the brush into the coat, then pull it from the base of the hair outward. Repeat until you have finished that section. Comb It Out Once you have brushed that entire area, go over it with a comb. If you cannot easily get the comb through a section of hair, go back to that area with your spray and slicker brush, then check again with the comb. Begin by wetting your dog completely, down to the skin, with lukewarm-to-cool water, and then use a simple kitchen sponge, moistened, to apply the shampoo. Pay special attention to areas where the fur is longer, paw pads and potty areas. In most cases it is best to give a light rinse, then apply a second round of shampoo, working the product in well. Use water at the temperature you would bathe a baby in and be sure to rinse every bit of shampoo out of the coat. Once you are done, rinse a second time to be sure it is all removed. Shampoo left in the fur can cause skin irritation and attract dirt. Pay special attention to drying the ears to help prevent ear infections. You can use a hair dryer set to low or cool setting and kept at least 6 inches away from the coat to finish up, or allow your dog to air dry in a warm place. Many dogs stand still better for this job when they are in the bathtub. Choose a nail trimmer for larger claws, such as Millers Forge Nail Clipper. If you can see the quick, or the live area inside the nail that features a blood vessel, clip just above that, removing the tip of the nail. Near where the claw begins to curve, towards the tip, the dead section on the underside will be hollow, like a canoe. This hollow area can be safely trimmed. To start, squeeze a few drops of cleaner into the ear. Then gently massage the area under the ear to work the product into the canal. Your dog will probably want to shake their head and body vigorously after this, so be ready with a towel! A little maintenance goes a long way in ensuring your best furry friend not only looks good but feels good. Read more:. This trimming is usually done on the ears, feet, neck and tail for a Golden Retriever to keep them looking smart. When should you start grooming your Golden Retriever puppy? Golden Retriever grooming should begin in their puppy phase to get them used to the process. These double-coated dogs are shedders that will need regular grooming in adult life to stimulate their coats, keep shedding under control and prevent mats and tangles. A Golden Retriever's coat doesn't develop properly until around 18 months, and as a puppy, your dog will have soft hair, which will form the undercoat once the overcoat develops. Get your puppy used to grooming by brushing its hair regularly with a soft-bristled brush, then moving onto a slicker brush as it ages and its coat begins to develop. If you plan on having your puppy professionally groomed, it's recommended to take it for its first trip to the groomer at around eight to twelve weeks old so it can get used to the grooming process and the salon. Golden Retrievers have a double coat which work together to protect your pup in both the winter and the summer months. Even clipping is not advisable with your Golden Retriever as it can hinder the growth of the undercoat later in the year. Instead, keep up with brushing their hair perhaps even doing it more regularly to remove the dead loose hair and regular bathing. Ideally, you need to be looking to purchase a dog shampoo that contains Oatmeal and Vitamin E. Regular brushing will reduce the amount of matting and make each brush a bit easier and softer. Use thinning scissors and begin to trim past where your thumb is, taking small bit by bit. Taking your time this way you should eventually reach your desired length. Recommended Products.

Are you looking for an amazing dog who can be both a beloved family pet and a retriever companion when you are out on the hunt? Have you considered a labradoodle as your ideal hunting dog companion? While you probably know that a Labrador retriever is a good hunting dog the clue is in the name , you can be forgiven for thinking that a poodle mix might not be up for the job. But poodles were, in fact, also hunting dogs when they were first bred, and their intelligence and eagerness to please mean that labradoodles are a welcome addition to the selection of hunting dogs currently available. Unlike Labrador retrievers, which are high shedding, many labradoodles inherit the low-shedding coat of a poodle. Hunting Dog DNA While it can be challenging to imagine today, labradoodles are actually a mix of two dog breeds that are ideal for hunting: the Labrador retriever and the poodle. Labrador Retrievers You are probably accustomed to seeing Labrador retrievers as working dogs, such as guide dogs for the blind , or as energetic family pets that love the great outdoors. But Labrador retrievers were actually bred to work as hunting dogs. They were created in Newfoundland in Canada with the aim of breeding sturdy, hardworking dogs that are comfortable in the water so that they could help fishermen pull fish from nets and onto the shore. These intelligent dogs are able to remember the locations of multiple fallen birds and wait until the end of a hunt to retrieve them. Poodles These days we mainly think of poodles as lap dogs that are best kept as family pets, but Poodles were actually used as hunting dogs in Europe from the middle ages. Poodles are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and can be trained to do pretty much anything that a dog can be trained to do. This, combined with their cute look, meant they quickly became popular in circus acts. Their intelligence, trainability, and loyalty, along with their attractiveness, made them popular among the wealthy, and they began to be bred specifically as lap dogs. It was a result of demand for poodles in this role that saw the creation of the smaller miniature and toy poodles breeds. And it was when these smaller breeds had been created that the poodles were removed from the sporting dog classification by the American Kennel Club in .But both the United Kennel Club and the North American Hunting Retriever Association still consider the poodle to be a sporting dog and allow poodles to participate in their retriever field tests. Larger poodles, around 22 inches and up, are perfectly suited for hunting. They are highly intelligent and motivated to please, so they are easy to train to complete the required task. They also tend to have a lot of energy, so keeping up the pace is rarely a challenge. Their curly coats can also be an advantage, as they can provide protection from the cold and other elements. During hunting season, poodles should have their coats trimmed down to around one inch all over. So, some labradoodles will be better suited to hunting than others. Size While labradoodles come in standard, medium, and miniature sizes, depending on the size of the poodle used for breeding, if you are looking for a hunting labradoodle, you will need a standard size dog. These dogs will be somewhere between 21 and 24 inches tall, with the males on the larger side and the females slightly smaller. The majority will weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. While they were initially bred to create Labrador retrievers with the low-shedding coat of a poodle, whether your labradoodle will be low-shedding like a poodle or high-shedding like a Labrador retriever is a bit of a gamble especially with first-generation pups. The nature of their coat becomes more predictable as labradoodles with low-shedding coats are bred to create a second generation of labradoodles. Unfortunately, the nature of their coats is not apparent when they are puppies, and it can take until they are one year old to reveal whether they will be shedders or not. Labradoodles come in a variety of colors, including gold, caramel, chalk, black, red, silver, chocolate, and blue. You should expect to be required to brush your labradoodle at least two or three times per week and to cut their hair every six to eight weeks to keep it in an orderly state for hunting. Personality Labradoodles are both highly intelligent and eager to please, which means they are highly trainable and one of the reasons they make such good hunting dogs. They are also excellent family pets because they are friendly and loyal. Their self-awareness means they are also very safe around children and rarely have accidents because they underestimate their size or weight. Activity Labradoodles tend to be high-energy dogs. They thrive when they have yard space that allows them to keep active, and out of trouble, throughout the day. Bear in mind that if these dogs become bored, they can be highly destructive. You need to engage your dog and play games with them. Invest in products such as puzzle toys to keep them occupied if you plan to be out of the house for extended periods of time. You will find that labradoodles become frustrated if they are left alone for more than four or five hours at a time. Health While labradoodles are a healthy dog breed, they can be prone to certain health conditions that affect them throughout their lives or in old age. Their floppy ears mean they are prone to ear infections because moisture gets trapped in the ear canals. Regular monitoring and cleaning of the ears can make a big difference. These dogs can also be prone to hip dysplasia in their middle to senior years. This is caused by the thigh bone not fitting snugly into the hip joint, which can cause pain, and makes the dog prone to arthritis as they get older. Allergies are a common ailment in all dogs, including labradoodles. While they might develop an allergy to anything, foods are the most common source. This is especially true of the proteins they eat the most. Try to avoid this by feeding your pup a varied diet that also includes novel proteins. Finding A Labradoodle Hunting Dog If you are looking for a labradoodle that most likely has the ideal characteristics for hunting, you will need to speak to a specialist breeder. They have experience matching mom and dad to prioritize certain characteristics and suppress others. While you might be able to find an excellent labradoodle hunting dog at a shelter, without good knowledge of their parents and the results of previous litters, it will be very difficult to predict whether they will make good hunting dogs. There are a few breeders out there who specialize not only in labradoodles but labradoodles for hunting, and you will probably have the most luck finding your desired pup here. Check out: American Hunting Doodles American Hunting Doodles are dedicated to breeding well-rounded hunters that are good waterfowl retrievers and conscientious upland flushers. As well as labradoodles, they breed goldendoodles and poodles mixed with Chesapeake Bay retrievers. The organization guarantees that their pups have a strong prey drive and provide DNA analysis to back up their claims. They provide early neurological stimulation, alongside potty training and crate training. They are based in Oregon, but breed and ship around the country. Country Doodle Dogs Country Doodle Dogs specialize in medium- and standard-sized labradoodle puppies that are specially bred and trained for hunting. Also based in Oregon, they provide puppies and stud services if you are looking to breed your own labradoodle for hunting. Most labradoodles are highly trainable and will be able to learn the functions of a hunting dog, and many are in desperate need of homes. Check out our list of 30 questions to ask when adopting a dog to help determine whether the labradoodle you are looking at will be suitable for you. FAQs Can you teach labradoodles to hunt? Labradoodles have a natural hunting instinct, and they are also among the most intelligent and trainable dogs, because they are eager to please and motivated by reward. This makes them ideal dogs to train as hunting dogs. Choose a standard labradoodle rather than one of the smaller varieties to make sure that they have the size and strength to deal with game and birds. Can labradoodles swim? Yes, labradoodles can swim and are quite at home in the water. Are labradoodles good guard dogs? They are just as likely to sniff an unexpected guest and flop down in front of their feet for a scratch as they are likely to start barking to raise the alert. Can labradoodles be left alone? Firstly, they have relatively small bladders and they will very likely need the bathroom within that time. Labradoodles left alone for long periods of time can be prone to destructive behavior. If this happens on a regular basis, they may also develop depression as they need human companionship. Are boy or girl labradoodles better? While personality depends on the individual labradoodle, many owners suggest that they prefer male pups as they tend to be more loving and affectionate. They also have more energy, which may make them more well-suited to the role of a hunting dog. But the difference between male and female labradoodles is not generally very great. Do labradoodles sleep a lot? Adult labradoodles only need to sleep for around hours a day, which is about average for medium- to large-sized breeds. The Verdict If you are looking for a dog that can be both a great hunting companion and an excellent family pet, then a labradoodle can be an excellent choice. Both Labrador retrievers and poodles were originally bred for hunting, though poodles became more commonly used in circus shows and as lap dogs. But this means that the labradoodle has all the right instincts to be an excellent hunting dog with the right training. Their intelligence and eagerness to please means they are also easy to train. These are naturally friendly dogs, so they are great pets for active families who have the time to give them the exercise and stimulation they need. If you find the right pup, they will also be low-shedding, which means they are less likely to set off allergies or clog up vacuum cleaners. Speak to specialist breeders to find the ideal labradoodle pup with the ideal characteristics to work as a hunting dog. Do you have any experience working with labradoodles as hunting dogs? Depending on their coat type they might be a little more or less resilient to the cold water, but they are all natural swimmers and strong retrievers from water. They will sit by the river or in your boat patiently, and jump straight in when you are ready. Labradoodles make strong retrievers, and really excel when you work closely with them. They are good peg dogs, staying by your side and working with you over long distances. A heavy coat will protect her from scrapes and scratches, but her large body size and long tail are not ideally suited to the job. Labradoodles are also more naturally inclined to stay close to their handler than carry out tracking or scenting work. Do Labradoodles Like Hunting? Dogs were bred for generations by humans to carry out certain jobs. The jobs that different breeds did were ones that worked well with their natural instincts. And that they enjoyed. The huge surge in positive training methods meets this beautifully, meaning that any dog you decide to train to hunt that has an inclination to do so will have the most amazing time working with you. Labradoodles love being together, fetching and carrying, swimming and running. Training Labradoodles to Hunt Training a Labradoodle to hunt works best when you use positive reinforcement methods. This means working with your dog to help motivate them through the use of rewards. Start with basic obedience training around the house. Focus a lot on rewarding them for making eye contact with you, coming to be near you and on recall training. The most important thing any hunting dog needs is a really great recall, because they are going to be up against a lot of temptation when training progresses. You want your Labradoodle to hunt on your terms, not on theirs. That means you need to be more rewarding than the exciting rabbits, squirrels, deer and birds they are going to encounter on your trips. Rock solid recall comes with proofing, where you gradually introduce distractions to your training only once they are really familiar with following your commands in an easy environment. American vs English Hunting Labradoodles If you are looking for a Labradoodle to train up as a hunting companion, you will need to make sure that their Labrador Retriever parent is from working lines. This means that they and their parents are an American Lab, not an English Lab. Although all types of Labs have a working history, the American line is much more recently bred for field work. These Labs will be slimmer in build, with more narrow heads and generally a lower body weight. She was a great, keen retriever but definitely did not have the hard working attitude of our American Labs. She was more playful, over friendly and easy to distract. Even better, find a puppy from a breeder that works the Labradoodle parents! Are Labradoodles Good Hunting Dogs? Most dogs are only ready to go out into the field once they are at least eighteen months old. You want to introduce distractions slowly, and get them really bonded to you and motivated to respond to your commands. If you carefully train and raise your Labradoodle puppy, then you will end up with a great hunting dog. And one that will also be a lovely, friendly family pet too! Post navigation. Coordination While any dog that participates in hunting live prey will need to be fit and athletic. The Right Coat Type A hunting dog is going to get dirty for sure. But there will also be near-constant exposure to pests, underbrush, skin irritants, cold, wet, hot, sunlight. A whole host of dangers that could sideline your canine. A great hunting dog will come already equipped with the right wardrobe: a thick coat with water-repellant and insulating properties. Intelligence Your dog needs to have enough intelligence to understand and follow complex commands, amidst lots of distractions. In addition, the best hunting dogs can think on their feet to overcome tough challenges even when you are separated in the field. Adaptability On a day hunt, you may never have to deal with having to share a blind or a tent with your pup. But even so, you can count on long periods of waiting together until the magic opportunity shows itself. Here, you need a dog that is well-balanced in temperament, versatile to adapt to the changing needs of the hunt. And well able to be a compatible companion no matter where the two of you need to go together. Predicting Labradoodle Hunting Ability Labradoodles can inherit any mix of traits from either of their parents breeds. Both Labs and Poodles are intelligent, eager to please, energetic, and adaptable. Both parent breeds also have water resistant fur. Finding Labradoodle puppies with good hunting instincts Even though training is undoubtedly important, lots of people think that successful hunting dogs are born, not made. Which is why male field trial champions can become sought after stud dogs and command higher stud fees. A logical way to find a Labradoodle puppy with innate hunting ability is to find a litter with working gundog parents on both sides of their family tree. Unfortunately however, whilst recognizing the signs that a Labradoodle has great hunting genes is straightforward, actually finding one might not be. Labradoodles have been bred first as service dogs, and later as pets. They are an unusual choice of hunting companion, so most breeders prioritise breeding pups with great pet temperaments rather then gundog potential. Tell them you want a hunting dog, and you may be met with blank looks. Next, by definition not every dog can be a field trial champion. And the owners of Labs that are may not support the creation of designer crossbreeds. So, you may need to be patient, to find a Labradoodle puppy with promise as a hunting dog. Are Labradoodles Hunting Dogs? Summary Labradoodles are descended from two esteemed hunting breeds. But Labradoodles are rarely bred with hunting potential in mind. So the bottom line is, some Labradoodles will make great hunting dogs while others will not. Are you training a Labradoodle as a hunting companion? Let us know in the comments! Boxers are best known for their short coats, but they also come in long-haired varieties. Prices vary on the type of coat. The price of a boxer puppy may also vary because of the place you get the Boxer. For example, most breeders in or around Georgia charge significantly more than a breeder who is located in another state or country. Prices will also fluctuate depending on whether or not the puppy is show-quality. Boxers are known for being loyal to their families and being intelligent. They are generally very friendly with children, strangers, and other animals unless they have been trained to be aggressive American Kennel Club. They require moderate exercise but do best in homes where someone is around during the day because they do not like being left alone especially if they have never been apart from them before. Overall these characteristics make the Boxer a great family pet. These clearances can be found by looking up the parent dogs on the OFA website offa. They should also show you where and how they were raised and keep them until they are at least eight weeks old to ensure that they have been properly socialized, which is crucial for a Boxer puppy. Ask about any hip or eye problems in their lines. Where and how many generations of champion bloodlines do they go back? This is usually more important for those who want to breed their new puppy as it shows they have a lot of knowledge about the breed and can provide you with knowledgeable information. Are there any known health problems in their lines? Most responsible breeders will be able to tell you that they care for all of their dogs and even give them regular check-ups and if not, this is a red flag. Visit Your Georgia Boxer Breeder in Person In order to find a responsible breeder, it is important to do some research. A decent Boxer breeder should be more than willing to tell you about themselves and their dogs. When you visit your Georgia boxer breeder in person, look for cleanliness and organization of the house or kennel. The area should not have any bad odors, and the puppies should appear healthy with shiny coats and bright eyes. They may be very active, which is normal but if they seem lethargic this could be an indication of illness or improper nutrition. It is also recommended that you ask for references from previous customers as well as veterinarians who have seen these dogs before. This will help ensure that you make a good investment when looking for a Boxer puppy. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Georgia Once you have found a breeder that meets the previous criteria, it is time to ask for references. A responsible Boxer Breeder will be able to provide any information about their dogs that you request. Ask them if you can speak with past customers of theirs so that you can find out how they were trained and cared for as well as the personality of these dogs. This way, you are making sure that this potential dog is right for your family before you make any final decisions. References can also be found online. If you find nothing, this may be a red flag since anyone can put anything on the internet. Make sure to contact them directly instead of through their website or Facebook page to avoid scams or other dishonest sellers who use these outlets for marketing purposes only. This allows you to get a more honest opinion about the breeder and their dogs without worrying about repercussions later on. We all know that there is little recourse for unsatisfied customers but rest assured knowing that these people will not hesitate to give you an honest answer if given permission to speak freely. Meeting past customers will also give you a better idea of what type of dog they have put into your family. Meeting the previous owners allows you to look for certain traits in a potential puppy, such as energy levels or age appropriateness. Another good way to find out about your breeder is to ask them if they have a veterinarian that they use for their dogs. A responsible boxer breeder should be able to provide you with this information without hesitation since taking care of their animals is important to them. If the Boxer Breeder does not have any sort of medical history available about their lines, this might be a red flag. If they are unwilling or unable to answer these questions, this could also mean that they are hiding something from you or do not know the answers themselves. These individuals may be backyard breeders or puppy mill owners who are looking to make a quick buck and care little about the health of their animals or their customers. A few signs that your Georgia Boxer Breeder is unethical include: They Do Not Have References: If you ask your breeder if they can provide any references from past buyers and they refuse, this could mean several things; Either they do not know how to get in touch with them unlikely or there is something wrong with these dogs that no one wants to talk about. Inquiring further will help you identify which it is but under either circumstance, it is best not to work with this kind of breeder. They Have Inflated Prices: Another way to spot an unethical boxer breeder is by the prices that they have listed on their dogs. If these Boxer dogs seem much more expensive than other breeders you have looked at, this might be a sign that something is wrong with them. This could involve health issues or genetics, but it is likely just a scheme to get more money from you without putting in the proper amount of time and care into these animals. Very Little Information about Their Breeding Program: Ethical and good Dog Breeders will do everything that they can to supply you with as many details about their breeding program as possible. They want you to feel safe and comfortable knowing what types of treatments the dog will receive and what they will be born into. There is no excuse not to provide you with this information; if your Boxer Breeder does not, then move on to another one. If you want a full-bred Boxer dog, make sure that you tell them before you purchase the animal. Many responsible breeders ask their customers for preferences when it comes to the age or sex of their dogs so that they can match up your needs with the right puppy. Responsible breeders will not only be able to answer this question, but they should also be able to provide you with information on what type of issues other puppy owners have experienced. If the breeder claims that all of their Boxer Dogs are healthy, then you should push for further explanation. If none of the puppies or adults have any medical concerns then that should be something that makes you feel safe. However, if there were previous owners who dealt with anything severe in the past, this information should still be available somewhere. This can include genetic conditions or simply problems with allergies or skin rashes. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy When you look at a breed as hearty as the Boxer, it can be easy to underestimate how much work and time this dog will need to be happy and healthy. However, if treated properly and cared for well by their owners, these dogs can make excellent pets; which is why it is so important that you take the following steps before bringing your pup home: The biggest thing that you want to do before you bring your Boxer home is to make sure that the living conditions are appropriate for this breed. You will want to have a large, fenced-in yard where your dog can move around freely and play. If you live in an apartment or condo, then it may be time to start looking into other options; Boxers need room to run which cannot be provided adequately in these types of environments. Another important thing that needs to be prepared is the area where your puppy will sleep at night. Not only should it be isolated from any drafts or cold air, but it should also provide warmth during the winter months. Be sure to look into buying bedding or blankets specifically designed for dogs if necessary. Your Boxer will also require training as soon as possible. This breed is known for having extremely high intelligence, but it does not come naturally to them; you will need to work hard to train your Boxer Puppy and give them boundaries that they can grow up comfortably within. You should start this process as early as possible so that it becomes second nature by the time your pup turns into an adult and needs more rules and regulations than just potty training. Potty Training Your New Boxer Puppy The most important thing that you need to teach your new Boxer is how to use the potty appropriately. You do not want to deal with any accidents in the house, and making sure they are trained properly will ensure that this does not happen. The best way to accomplish this is through crate training; it may be a very foreign concept for many owners, but it is also one of the most effective methods when it comes to house-breaking puppies. It is recommended that you put your Boxer Puppy into a crate at night while you sleep and then carefully take them out first thing in the morning so that they can use the bathroom right away. Do not allow them too much time without being taken just before bed because they might make a mistake in your absence. Another important step that you should take is to keep your puppy on a strict schedule; this means taking them out for walks regularly and making time every few hours to play with them, feed them, and then let them use the bathroom once more. This will ensure that they do not have accidents inside of the house because their body will be used to getting into the habit of relieving themselves outside. You need to make sure that there are no areas where they can get injured or choke on something by accident. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Available: Now Hey everyone! Chance was an owner surrender to the animal shelter and was in rough shape. Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care.
