We will have an ultrasound done on Monday, August 28th to know if she is pregnant. This litter would be due at the beginning of October. He commented on how correct her head was and her body and wanted to know all about her breeding. He has the best temperament and SO smart! At a little over 9 weeks old he knows his name, and can sit and stay on command. And to top it all off he is a beautiful dog to look at. They do an absolutely phenomenal job at getting just the right bloodlines in their breeding program! Keep up the great work Jamie! Bailey was only 10 months old when our son was born and has been wonderful with him and our family. She has a great temperament - patient, playful and loving. She always waits for us to put him down at night so she can have her cuddle time. We can't imagine our lives without her. Our Dogs.

Stainless steel dog bowls are widely known as being the best material for dog bowls. You may find that most slow-feeder bowls are made of plastic over other materials. Capacity How much food or water will the bowl hold? If you have a small pup, avoid dog bowls that might be too big for her since it could get hard for her to reach her food or water. Other considerations Since some dogs have different needs, there are tons of dog bowls designed with those special considerations in mind. If your dog tends to inhale her food, for example, getting a slow-feeder dog bowl will help her slow down and digest her food better. Elevated dog bowls can make eating more comfortable, especially for taller dogs who might not love having to bend down to the floor. You can chat with your veterinarian to see if your specific dog needs a bowl that will let her eat or drink more comfortably. Also consider how you plan to use this bowl to decide which type you should get. For example, if you plan to keep this dog bowl outside with water, you might want something insulated to keep the water cold. Or, if you want to take your pup traveling or hiking, a collapsible dog bowl might be best. Cost Always consider your personal budget when shopping for dog essentials. Best dog food bowls. Reviewed by Bartley Harrison Dr. Bartley Harrison is a veterinarian with more than 15 years of professional veterinary experience treating dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, and small mammals, with a specific focus on Emergency Medicine. Different dog bowls offer different features, and some are better than others. There are many different types of dog bowls out there, so it can be hard for dog owners to determine which kind is right for their dog. If you think about it, your dog's bowl is an important part of his basic nutritional health. Here's the lowdown on the main types of dog bowls available, as well as the pros and cons of each one. They tend to be inexpensive and unlikely to break if dropped. Many are dishwasher-safe. However, plastic bowls are generally not recommended for many dogs. Bowls made of plastic can be easily chewed or scratched by your dog, leaving places for bacteria to build up. Additionally, some dogs may develop an allergy to the plastic, resulting in a mild skin reaction on the chin or face. It's probably best to find a healthier option for your dog's meals. These bowls are often decorated with fun designs and may even be handmade by artists. Their protective glaze makes them easy to keep clean, especially if dishwasher-safe. However, ceramic dog bowls will easily break if dropped. Even when handled carefully, these bowls can chip or crack, and become unsafe for your dog. Smaller, less visible cracks can harbor bacteria. Be sure to inspect your ceramic bowls regularly for damage. These bowls are sometimes made with a non-skid rim on the bottom to prevent spilling. Stainless steel bowls do not often come in colors or designs, though some can be found. However, they are practical, inexpensive supplies for your dog that stand the test of time. It's still important to take proper care of these bowls, however. They can develop stains or rust, especially if left outdoors. In addition, dogs that like to chew their bowls may even be able to damage stainless steel bowls and their own teeth in the process. The stand is typically made of metal, wood, or plastic. Experts believe that elevated feedings are healthier for dogs, possibly preventing gastrointestinal problems. Also, this type of bowl may be more comfortable for some dogs, especially giant dog breeds. If your dog tends to paw at his bowl, the stand should ideally be placed near a wall to prevent tipping. Elevated dog bowls may be on the expensive side, but they are often considered worth the price. Some even include a compartment to store food, which can be a good or bad feature depending on your dog's ability to cause some destruction! Continue to 5 of 8 below. Many are designed to keep your dog's bowl full as long as there is food or water in the storage compartment. Some automatic feeders are programmable, only giving your dog food access at the times you set. While non-programmable bowls are a good idea in order to keep water available to your dog, they are not often recommended for use with dog food. Free-feeding is not ideal for most dogs, as it does not allow you to monitor your dog's food intake accurately and can lead to weight problems. It's a better idea to use a programmable feeder, but know that there is always the chance that your dog can break in! It's probably a better idea to just feed your dog in person. However, an automatic feeder can come in handy if you work long hours and your feeder is tamper-proof. They are typically made of polyester or similar fabric with a plastic or nylon liner, though some are specially designed from more rigid materials. The bowls can be folded or collapsed to smaller sizes once empty, making them easily portable. Travel dog bowls are not very expensive and quite worth it if you like to take your dog places. These bowls collapse to a flat design and open in an accordion-like fashion, making them somewhat adjustable by height. Many have clips so you can attach the collapsed bowl to a bag or belt loop. Silicone bowls can hold food or water, are dishwasher safe, and relatively durable. Of course, a dog can easily destroy a silicone bowl. It's best to pick up these bowls when not in use. Many dogs "gulp" down their food. Though fast eating is not a problem for some dogs, in others it can lead to indigestion, excess gas, or even vomiting. Some professionals think that food-gulping might be a contributing factor to the development of bloat, or GDV, a dangerous condition where the stomach fills with gas and rotates but fast eating is not a proven cause of GDV. Slow feed bowls are uniquely designed to make dogs eat more slowly. They typically have ridges or other structures in them that force the dog to take smaller bites of food at a time. Slower eating can help your dog better enjoy meals and feel less hungry afterward. These bowls are often made out of plastic, but some can be found in stainless steel. However, there is one stainless steel bowl designed specifically with water in mind. Flat out refuses to. She would prefer to dehydrate than drink warm water. Simply place the bowl in your freezer and wait a couple of hours. The bowl keeps your water cooler much longer than regular ice cubes. This non-toxic gel helps keep water cold for longer. As you expect, the bowl stays cooler for longer when kept inside rather than outside in the harsh sun. Still, I am happy that I have an alternative to ice cubes. I bought two and have one in the freezer at all times, rotating them. If you are looking for a water bowl that prevents spills, check out our no-spill dog bowl guide. While our top picks outperformed, the following stainless steel dog bowls were flawed in one way or another. After all, they are all more than capable of holding both food and water. However, based on our testing, we see no reason to choose these over our top picks. It was made from thin stainless steel. The thin metal dented easily and was effortlessly pushed around during feeding, even by our smallest tester, Fiona. And to top it off, the sticker on the bottom of the bowl left an almost impossible to remove residue. However, the added rubber rim made the bowl more difficult to clean. While the colorful patterns were adorable, the poly-resin scratched on the first use. I shudder to think what it would look like after a couple of months. The hammered pattern had the potential to trap wet food. Attention dog bowl manufactures: Stop putting impossible to remove stickers on the inside of the bowl! Yep, Neater Pet Brands does this too. If you really have to go the budget route, then the Amazon Basics Stainless Steel Bowl is as good as it gets. In fact, you could pick up four of them for the same price as our recommendations. PetFusion Premium Bowls were so light. They slid everywhere, even when our smallest of testers was eating from the biggest bowl. What is a stainless steel dog bowl? Stainless steel is the same material used to make the utensils you eat with. High-quality stainless steel is durable and can last years. While some bowls are made entirely of stainless steel, others have rubber or silicone bases to prevent the bowl from sliding around while your dog eats. Which dogs need a stainless steel dog bowl? In my opinion, stainless steel bowls should be used by every dog — they are superior to both plastic and ceramic dog bowls in many ways. Do you want the toughest dog bowl possible? Stainless steel dog bowls are durable. Really durable. In fact, my Golden Retriever has used the same stainless steel bowl since she was a puppy. To put this into perspective, no other product that I have for bought my dog has lasted nearly that long — not one that she uses on a daily basis anyway. Do you have a chewer in the house? If your dog likes to gnaw, then the last thing you want is a plastic dog bowl — it will be chomped to pieces in no time. While it may seem like your dog can chew through anything, I have yet to see one that can tear through metal. If your dog can, then you have bigger problems than choosing the correct dog bowl. Your dog may nibble on a stainless steel bowl, but he will soon give up when he realizes just how tough it is. Does your dog suffer from acne? Well, mine at least — acne. It turns out that dogs can also break out in these ugly spots. Do you want a dog bowl that is easy-to-clean? Stainless steel bowls are easy-to-clean, there is no risk of them breaking in the dishwasher, and they hold up to a good scrubbing. There are some downsides to be aware of… If you feed your dog on a tile or cement floor, you want to choose a stainless steel bowl with a rubber or silicone base or place it on a mat to prevent it from sliding around. You should also be aware that if exposed to the sun, your stainless steel bowl will warm up faster than other materials — so keep it in a shady spot! Stainless steel bowls can be scary — particularly if your dog has a hanging metal dog tag like this one… These dog tags make a loud tink sound as they bump against the side of the bowl when your pooch eats his meal. This noise is loud enough to startle a jumpy dog. Also, if you have a cowardly pup who is scared of his own reflection, avoid polished stainless steel bowls — these bowls are so shiny that your dog will see himself. More on this later. Finally, stainless steel bowls all look like… Well, stainless steel bowls. When it comes to designs, not much variation exists from one brand to the next. If you want a colorful bowl for your pooch, plastic or ceramic is a better choice. Despite these downsides, stainless steel dog bowls are most commonly recommended by dog owners, pet store employees and dog shelter volunteers. As always, weigh the pros and cons to determine if a stainless steel bowl is appropriate for your dog. Elevated dog bowls have been the talk of the town for pet parents for a long time now. However, as a fellow Golden Retriever pet parent, I do think that there are benefits after having my dogs experience them first-hand. In fact, I have noticed that there are quite a lot of benefits that a Golden Retriever gets when eating through an elevated dog bowl. However, there are also some small perks for you, the members of the family, or the people who take care of your Golden Retriever. Let me share with you what those benefits are. This medical condition in Golden Retrievers means that your dog has developed a bigger or enlarged esophagus than most dogs. If your Golden Retriever has this medical condition, they have a hard time swallowing their food. This is because of a delay in the opening of the throat. Additionally, there are times where the throat may not open at all to swallow food. Using an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever dogs will help dogs with this condition to swallow their food properly. An elevated dog bowl means that your dog does not have to bend his neck down to drink water or consume food. Gravity also plays a big role in helping food move through the throat or esophagus. If your dog is bent down, the food or water is working against gravity. That will usually result in your dog choking. That is why you should invest in an elevated dog bowl. However, keep in mind that your Golden Retriever may not even develop megaesophagus in his or her entire lifetime. It is a lot better that you already have some of the equipment. This is just in case the situation ever arises. Easier for Owners to Reach the Dog Bowls Human beings like to purchase things because it is convenient for them to use. That is also the same case when you purchase an elevated dog bowl. Purchasing an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever dogs does not only give your beloved dog all the benefits. It also has some perks for the family members who are dwelling in the household. These perks are catered for people who have a hard time reaching down to get dog bowls. That is why buying their dogs an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever dogs will help them a lot. They will not have to give so much effort in trying to feed their pets. This is because an elevated dog bowl is a lot easier to reach than normal dog bowls that are only placed on the floor. I suggest that you get an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever dogs as a gift for someone who needs it. If you also think that you need an easier time feeding your Golden Retrievers, this kind of dog bowl could also be beneficial for you. Helps your Golden Retriever Swallow their Food Buying an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever dogs also helps your pet swallow their food. However, the elevated dog bowl should be leveled at the perfect height in order for it to be effective. When it is set to the most optimal height for your dogs, they will be able to enjoy all the benefits that elevated dog bowls offer. An elevated dog bowl helps Golden Retrievers who have a hard time swallowing get their food down easier. Previously, I talked about how elevated dog bowls help Golden Retrievers with Megaesophagus. However, an elevated dog bowl does not only assist Golden Retrievers with megaesophagus, but it also helps all Golden Retrievers regardless if they have the condition or not. Thus, the benefits of elevated dog bowls also apply to Golden Retriever puppies, adults, and seniors. There are certainly elevated dog bowls that you can adjust at different heights. They usually come in small, medium, or large. I am quite sure that at least once in your life, you have seen your Golden Retriever choke on something. This is usually because your Golden Retriever was probably chewing too much food. When your Golden Retriever is bending his neck down while he or she is chewing, the food or water is working against gravity. Thus adding the possibility of your Golden Retriever choking. Golden Retrievers are considered medium-sized dog breeds. These kinds of medium-sized dog breeds can grow up to 24 inches tall if they are male. Females, on the other hand, tend to reach around 23 inches in height. In dog height, that is already pretty tall. It is important that you help your Golden Retriever take care of their posture while they are growing up. You can achieve this by purchasing an elevated dog bowl. Even though Golden Retrievers have evolved to eat with their head bent down, there are still health benefits if your dog eats through an elevated dog bowl in terms of posture. Keep in mind that you have to set the elevated dog bowl at the perfect height for your Golden Retriever. Otherwise, you may just be creating back, hip, and neck problems for your dog. At the perfect height, your Golden Retriever will not be experiencing any of these problems. Keeps the Bowl in Place Golden Retrievers can become quite messy when they eat. Sometimes, they push the bowl around when they eat or drink from it. Why you ask? Well, it is because an elevated dog bowl comes with a stand that has a firm base. Typically, an elevated dog bowl stand is made out of the firm, tough, and heavy material. This material is either wood or metal. However, there are some lighter elevated dog bowls that are made out of hard plastic. If your Golden Retriever is not a messy eater, I suggest that you get a plastic elevated dog bowl. When your elevated dog bowl stand is made out of metal or hardwood, it is less likely to travel around your floor. It will only get messy if your Golden Retriever pushes it around on purpose. There are some owners that nail their elevated dog bowl in place. I do not suggest doing that unless you are okay with putting a nail through your floor. Alternatively, I have pet parent friends who put a carpet or rug underneath their elevated dog bowls. This prevents the bowls from being pushed around. However, that option should only be open to you if you are okay with cleaning that carpet or rug every once in a while. Especially if your Golden Retriever is a messy eater who leaves crumbs on the floor. Prevents your Golden Retriever from Playing with the Bowl An elevated dog bowl stand prevents your Golden Retriever from playing around with it. This is targeted towards your Golden Retrievers that are still puppies or who are particularly playful. After all, anything can become a toy for a bored dog. To further prevent your mischievous Golden Retrievers from playing with things that they should not play with, you can train them to behave properly. It may take some time, but training your Golden Retriever is the better option so that he or she can have good house manners. Alternatively, you can also buy them more stimulating toys that will entertain them. A Golden Retriever who plays with their dog bowl is most likely hungry, has nothing to do, or he or she just simply wants to capture your attention. If your Golden Retriever seems hungry most of the time, you can adjust the amount of food you feed it so that it will not go hunting for snacks in between meals. Additionally, an elevated dog bowl has a stand that may or may not be heavy enough for your Golden Retriever pup to push around or even move. It is also quite hard for them to pop the bowls off unless they knock them around forcefully. Stops your Golden Retriever from Lying Down while Eating In case your Golden Retriever is already struggling to stand up, he or she may prefer to lie down on the floor even while eating food. There are some Golden Retrievers that are just plain lazy to stand up in order to eat food. That is why they sometimes plop on their stomachs. However, did you know that Golden Retrievers also lie down on their stomachs when they eat because they are feeling territorial about their food? Golden Retrievers are not typically aggressive or very territorial, but sometimes they lie down and keep their food close to them so that they can keep an eye out for other dogs that can potentially steal their food. This usually happens if you have a lot of dogs in your household. When this happens, it is perfectly normal. However, if this behavior makes you want to prevent your Golden Retriever from lying down, you can use an elevated dog bowl so that he or she will not have the option to lie down. Keep in mind that it is normal for pets, especially Golden Retrievers, to lie down on their stomachs while they eat. This is a sign that they are just being protective of their food. It will not cause any kind of medical problems. However, if they are lying down on their back and still trying to eat out from their bowls it just may be a sign that your Golden Retriever is either sick or too tired to move. Either way, an elevated dog bowl for Golden Retriever bowls should keep them from lying down like that. Why is that? It is because they will feel a lot more comfortable when they are eating out from an elevated dog bowl than a regular bowl that is positioned on the floor. It helps them especially if they have dog arthritis, joint pain, and hip problems. Imagine if you yourself had a bad back problem and still had to move around just to get a meal. Such is the same for your senior Golden Retriever. Because they are old, we, the pet parents, should make sure that they are comfortable moving around. Other than bone problems like arthritis, they may also be suffering from other medical conditions like megaesophagus. Thus, we should find ways for them to live their best lives even at an old age. Some Golden Retrievers may need to lie down while eating because it is hard for them to stand up for long periods of time. That is why you should always be aware if they are still strong enough to do their normal daily functions. A trip to the veterinary clinic will do the trick. The veterinarian who will take a look at your old Golden Retriever will determine if what your pet needs is an elevated dog bowl or not. How High should an Elevated Dog Bowl be? It all depends on how tall your dog is. Now, it might be hard for you to measure the exact height of your Golden Retriever, especially if he or she refuses to sit still. That is why it is alright for you to make an approximation of how tall your pet is. Make sure that your dog is standing upright. Then, take your measuring tool and measure the height starting from the shoulders to the floor. Below, I have created a table on how tall your elevated dog bowl should be. Golden Retriever Height. Comes with a carabiner clip 5. If your Golden Retriever is crate trained or has to be put inside of a crate for any particular reason: such as to travel, then these will come in handy. Also, this product comes in multiple other sizes, including: 20 ounces 2. It is not atypical for both males and females to eat more or less depending on varying factors such as age and health conditions. A pregnant or nursing female Golden Retriever will need around 2, calories a day to maintain a satisfactory weight. Ideally, Golden Retrievers should be fed twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening. Although their adorable faces are hard to resist it is important that they have a healthy balance to their meals and snacks. Good carbs would be things such as potatoes, rice, wheat, and oats. With all of this physical activity, it is important to have food and water bowls that can adequately fulfill their needs on a day-to-day basis. Stainless steel dog bowls would be the best choice for this but there are a ton of many other great alternatives such as the ones on our list. You will also have to pick products based on the playfulness of your pup. If they are known to rip and run around the house then go with a sturdier choice. Furthermore, if your Retriever is known to play with their food and water bowls then a stainless steel option would be in your favor. If you and your dog enjoy evening or morning hikes then we would urge you to pick an option that would reflect that as well. Whatever dog and water bowls that you decide works best for you and your furry friend, we hope that our list of the best dog bowls for Golden Retrievers was a helpful aid in that journey. Check out our top picks for the best dog bowls for Golden Retrievers, including elevated, stainless steel, and collapsible options! You can go to the store and see a lot of choices. Which one is the best bowl for your dog? What kind of material should we choose? There are many questions that arise in our minds. If you have a golden retriever, you know how much fun it is to take care of this dog. Even though they are so cute, be sure to buy the best dog bowls for golden retrievers to keep your doggy warm and comfortable. So your golden retriever is turning one year old soon? You might be considering getting a birthday present for him. As dog owners know, good gifts are hard to find. The right dog bowl not only needs to be good-looking, but durable and well thought out as well. This article will present my top picks for the best dog bowls for golden retrievers. Should golden retrievers use elevated bowls? The question is, should golden retrievers use elevated bowls? The answer, of course, depends on your goals. If you want your dog to be as tall as possible, then yes. If you want your dog to have to bend over and strain itself to eat, then obviously no. Dogs with a tendency to eat too fast or become anxious about their food may benefit from elevated feeders. This is especially helpful for large dogs such as golden retrievers, who tend to gobble down their food because of the size of their stomachs. Elevated dog bowls provide your golden retriever with a more ergonomic eating experience that can help prevent joint and neck pain. The idea is that the raised position of the bowl allows your dog to eat in a more natural position and puts less strain on the front legs and neck. What size bowls for a golden retriever? The answer to this question will depend largely on your dog. After all, all dogs are individuals, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. A good rule of thumb is to find a bowl that your dog can comfortably put its face in, while still having its ears upright. For example, my golden retriever weighs about 60 pounds. He eats from an inch diameter bowl without any problems. The smaller size also makes it easier for him to carry the bowl when he moves around the house. The key is finding a bowl that works for you and your dog! You might have to experiment with different sizes until you find one that works best. Do golden retrievers need a slow feeder? A slow feeder dog bowls are simply a dog bowl that has been designed in a way that makes it difficult for your pooch to quickly gobble their dinner. Instead, they have to eat slowly, taking care of each bite. This leads to an improved mealtime experience and can even help prevent bloating and choking in dogs who inhale their food too quickly. However, for some dog breeds, a slow feeder may be beneficial for slowing down eating habits and reducing the risk of certain health problems. Other pups may simply need some help learning how to eat slowly. Where do you put a dog bowl? You need to pick a place where your dog can eat in peace. Avoid putting it near anything smelly, like the trash can or dirty laundry pile. Your dog will appreciate having a quiet, calm place to eat. Make sure your dog has room to stand and move around his bowl without getting tangled up in furniture or other things. Some dogs may be sensitive about people standing over them while they eat, so try not to hover around them while he eats. But our goal is to help you decide which ones would be best for your particular situation. Its reinforced plastic rim makes it easy for your pet to access food and water while on the go. It is ideal for walks, hiking, dog parks, and long car rides. The Comfort Feeder is perfect for dogs of all life stages and can help reduce stress on their joints and bones. This feature makes it an ideal choice for more mature dogs and medium-sized dogs alike. In addition, this raised dog bowl serves as a constant water supply by replacing one of the stainless steel dog bowls with a two-liter water bottle, making it an automatic water bowl for dogs. Made of rust-resistant stainless steel, this pet food and water bowl is not only durable but also a hygienic alternative to plastic bowls. The no-tip design with a wide non-slip base holds up to 38 ounces of dry kibble, wet food, fresh water, or treats. The rubber ring on the bottom keeps the bowl in place and protects floors from scratches, so your furry friend can eat or drink without any hassle. Cleaning the bowl is a breeze as it is easy to wash by hand or in the dishwasher. This set includes two 14oz stainless steel bowls that are perfect for food or water. The flexible silicone mats keep the dog food bowl in the same place, while the raised lip design prevents spills and keeps your floor clean. Your Golden Retriever will love their new bowl set! More importantly, your pet dog could end up eating too much or taking in too little to maintain a healthy diet. Fortunately, you can minimize the chances of either scenario being a reality with the right dog bowl for your pet. Further Reading.

Wednesday, January 2 Vestibular Disease and French Bulldogs Part Two Many adult dogs experience an episode that looks like a seizure or a stroke, and we are concerned that some Frenchies are being euthanized needlessly due to misdiagnosis. Vestibular disease presents suddenly. One minute your dog is running around or chewing a toy, and the next minute she can't stand up or remain standing, or she can't focus her eyes, and they are moving back and forth quickly in a motion called nystagmus. Her head may tilt either immediately or sometime later in the hours or days following the initial event. She may drool. She may panic. If you are like most people, you will almost certainly panic. Try to stay calm and take her to the vet as soon as you can. Deo suffered from vestibular disease. In this photo you can see his head tilt and his left eye is a little less bright because of facial paralysis on that side. Here's what is happening: your dog has lost her sense of balance. She can't figure out her relationship to the ground and that's why she's staggering. Most episodes are "idiopathic" which means nobody knows what causes them. Some speculate that there is a tiny blood clot in the area of the brain that affects balance, and as it dissolves, the condition resolves. But there is no agreement about what it causes it, and there may be a number of possible causes that result in the same set of symptoms. FBRN grad Eva had a bout of vestibular disease, too. She's not suspiciously squinting at you in this photo. Like Deo, she had some facial paralysis on the left side of her face. She's much better now. Vestibular disease, stroke, and brain tumors can share symptoms. Vestibular disease is a far more likely diagnosis than the other two, which is very good news. Your vet may suggest an MRI to rule out a brain tumor, but most vets will suggest you take your dog home, be sure she's eating and drinking well, and watch for signs of recovery, which should happen in a few days or a week. Frida's experience with vestibular disease was very helpful to Eva's owner as she navigated the diagnostic process. Did you know there are Internet support groups for virtually every medical condition a dog might have? In the days following the initial event, some dogs also experience facial paralysis, and the paralysis can be either obvious or subtle. Many dogs develop a head tilt, which may resolve in a few days, or a month, or never. Most dogs do recover within a month or so. As the days pass following the initial event, you may find that your dog is not interested in eating. If you had the spins, you probably would not want to eat, either, but some dogs respond well to anti-nausea meds or to hand-feeding. Some people suggest that while your dog is recovering from the worst of it, you leave a light on, so she can find an object and orient herself to it even in the night. His family wrote to us and asked us to do this report on VD. Vestibular disease happens most oftens in dogs who are 6 years old and older, but some young dogs have had vestibular disease--Deo and Maxwell Smart were on the young side, while Eva was a senior dog when she had it. Watching a dog have a seizure or experience a stroke or the symptoms of vestibular disease is very frightening, and it can be heartbreaking. Try to keep your head, and try to remember that what looks like a stroke or a seizure may well be something far less worrisome and will often resolve completely or nearly so. Posted by. The head tilt is a cute canine maneuver that gives the impression your pup is paying attention to you. And they typically tilt their heads consistently to the same side. Data was collected during the Genius Dog Challenge, a series of experiments that were broadcast on social media, showing dogs retrieving their toys by name. The information was also collected during an earlier study that researched how some dogs are able to learn the names of many of their toys. They also created the Genius Dog Challenge , a research project and social media campaign, to find even more brilliant pups. They found six border collies that live in different countries, who all learned toy names just while playing with their owners. For the challenge, these gifted word learners had a week to learn the names of six toys. During the second stage, they had a week to try to learn the names of a dozen toys. The dogs sat or stood in front of their owners when they were asked to fetch one of the toys by pronouncing its name. The results were published in the journal Animal Cognition. Choosing Sides Dogs, horses, and other animals—including humans—show asymmetry in the way they perceive the world around them. They prefer one ear, eye, hand or paw over the other when interacting with the environment. Most of us are right-handed but there are still left-handed people around. For instance, in dogs, even the inclination their tails have when they're wagging is a sign of asymmetrical behaviour. What About Typical Dogs? But their results are limited because they only studied these brilliant pups who have learned toy names. Neurology Head Tilt in Dogs: A Clinical Approach Head tilt in dogs is a clinical presentation that most veterinarians encounter frequently in practice, most often due to dysfunction of the vestibular system. June 8, Michelle B. Carnes interned at University of Missouri-Columbia. She has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and provides continuing education seminars nationally. She also has a special interest in non-invasive advanced imaging procedures of the brain and spinal cord, specifically high-field MRI. Read Articles Written by Michelle B. When a patient presents for evaluation of a head tilt, it can sometimes be challenging to know the best course of diagnostics to recommend and whether or what primary treatment is warranted. Differentiation of the varied clinical presentations of vestibular disease and how they relate to the generation of a list of differential diagnoses can be extremely helpful in providing appropriate primary care and being able to better predict possible outcomes. Evaluating a Head Tilt: Differentiating the varied clinical presentations of vestibular disease can help in providing appropriate primary care. The primary reason for a dog to exhibit a head tilt is dysfunction of the vestibular system. From a clinical perspective, it is divided into two components: peripheral, which involves the vestibulocochlear nerve cranial nerve VIII and its receptor in the inner ear; and central, which involves the brainstem and sometimes the cerebellum. Basic Review of Neuroanatomy The receptor organ of the vestibular system is located within the petrous temporal bone in the inner ear and consists of the saccule, utricule and crista ampularis within the semicircular canal FIGURE 2. Through movement of the hair cells bathed in endolymph, the position and movement of the animal as it relates to gravity is detected and then transmitted by cranial nerve VIII vestibulocochlear nerve to the vestibular nuclei in the brainstem. Provision of extensor tone to the muscles to support the body against gravity via the vestibulospinal tract. Conscious perception of position via the thalamus to the somatosensory cortex of the forebrain. Coordination of movement of the eyes, head, trunk and extremities in relation to movement or static position via the caudal cerebellar peduncle to the cerebellum. Influence of the vomiting center in the reticular formation as a consequence of motion sickness. Anatomy of the canine external, middle and inner ear. Step 1: Determine the Neuroanatomic Localization Once a head tilt has been identified, the next step is to perform a complete neurologic examination of the patient to determine if the vestibular dysfunction is peripheral, central or paradoxical. Paradoxical vestibular disease refers to a distinct localization to the cerebellum: specifically, the caudal cerebellar peduncle or the flocculonodular lobe2 that result in slightly different clinical signs than typical peripheral or central vestibular disease. On the contrary, dogs with central vestibular disease are more likely to have a more dull mentation, conscious proprioception deficits and one or more cranial nerve deficits. Postural reaction deficits are the most important indicator of central disease; and deficits in cranial nerve V to XII are the most likely. Below is a brief discussion of some of the more common diseases seen in clinical practice. It is important to note that an intact tympanic membrane does not rule out OMI; in fact, infection most commonly results from 1 a descending infection from otitis externa, 2 hematogenous spread of microorganisms or 3 extension of microorganisms from the pharynx via the auditory tube. Treatment is antibiotic therapy, ideally based on culture and sensitivity, and supportive care. Recognition and prompt treatment of this complication can result in a good prognosis for recovery. Note the elevated third eyelid, miosis and mild ptosis. Enophthalmos, which is often present, is not appreciated in this photograph. Idiopathic Vestibular Disease Idiopathic vestibular disease is reported to be the second most common cause of peripheral vestibular disease in the dog. There is typically a peracute onset with affected animals showing clinical improvement within a few days and near complete resolution within 3 to 4 weeks. Though the cause of idiopathic vestibular disease is unknown, there is consideration that the cause may be due to a viral infection of the vestibular nerve. Post-contrast axial image of the canine brain at the level of the caudal brainstem. Note the contrast enhancement of the right lateral aspect of the medulla red arrow. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism has been implicated as a cause for both peripheral and central vestibular disease in dogs. The pathogenesis of hypothyroid-associated vestibular disease has been described as a component of polyneuropathy or as myxedematous disease causing nerve compression cranial nerve VIII and sometimes cranial nerve VII as they exit the skull through the internal acoustic meatus. Thyroid hormone supplementation typically results in improvement within a few months. Ototoxicity Peripheral vestibular signs may develop if the ear has been flushed with any routine cleaning solution if the tympanum is ruptured. Clinical signs of vestibular disease may develop rapidly as soon as 10 minutes. Within 3 days to 3 weeks, central compensation results in gradual improvement of clinical signs; the compensation is maximal after about 3 months. The head tilt, however, may still be obvious and permanent. Chlorhexidine solutions can significantly contribute to ototoxicity and should be avoided if the status of the tympanum is unknown. Aminoglycoside antibiotics parenteral or topical can affect the hair cells, flocculonodular lobe and fastigial nucleus; streptomycin tends to have vestibular effects, whereas neomycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, and vancomycin tend to have more effect on the auditory system. In addition, loop diuretics, cisplatin and propylene glycol have also been implicated as potentially ototoxic. Female, small breed dogs 4 to 8 years of age are predisposed, and diagnosis is based on MRI and, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, with or without infectious disease testing. Treatment involves immune suppression with glucocorticoids plus a chemotherapy drug cytarabine arabinoside, procarbazine or immunomodulating drug cyclosporine, leflunomide. Aggressive long-term treatment is necessary, and the prognosis is guarded. Diagnosis is based on history and clinical signs. Treatment includes cessation of metronidazole therapy and supportive care. It has been shown that diazepam administration 0. A careful history should be taken, including rate and duration of onset, whether the signs have progressed since onset, medications administered, diet, travel history, and existence of any other comorbidities. Physical exam should include a complete otoscopic exam and complete neurological examination to determine if the patient localizes to peripheral or central disease. A minimum database, including complete blood count, serum chemistry, blood pressure and thoracic with or without bullae radiographs, are recommended. If systemic infectious disease is suspected, serum titers or polymerase chain reaction for likely organisms TABLE 2 can be performed. In patients where peripheral vestibular disease is suspected, additional diagnostic considerations may include myringotomy with culture and sensitivity and a complete thyroid panel thyroxine, free T4 and thyroid-stimulating hormone based on clinical suspicion. For patients that localize to central vestibular disease or those that are not improving with initial therapy, advanced imaging ideally MRI of the head and possible cerebrospinal fluid analysis are highly recommended. Symptomatic treatment is often beneficial as many patients that have vestibular disease experience varied degrees of severity of clinical signs including nausea, anorexia, anxiety, recumbency, circling, falling and rolling. For dogs that are mildly affected, meclizine, an antiemetic and antivertigo drug, is indicated. Other antiemetics such as maropitant, ondansetron or chlorpromazine can also be considered. Patients more severely affected will benefit from parenteral fluid therapy and intensive nursing care in an inpatient setting. During periods of severe vertigo i. Following the acute phase of vertigo, physical rehabilitation appears to aid in the recovery of ambulation and is recommended. Summary Head tilt in dogs is generally mediated through dysfunction of the vestibular or cerebellovestibular system. Careful attention to history, progression of disease and a complete neurological examination, especially postural reaction testing and a cranial nerve examination, is paramount. Localization of whether the vestibular disease is of peripheral or central origin is essential to the accurate formation of a differential diagnoses for the patient. The underlying cause may be simple or more complex, with peripheral disorders typically carrying a better overall prognosis. Vestibular System: Special Proprioception. He went on a combination of local treatments known to be safe when the eardrum is ruptured, plus systemic antibiotics. The other side of the coin are dogs like Holly or Denver here. The information provided here is not intended to be used as a substitute for going to the vet. If your pet is unwell, please seek veterinary attention. She shows no signs of discomfort,, is eating well and has normal energy level. The vet suspects inner ear infection and prescribed 8 days of cefaseptin mg. Looking back, I wonder if she might have had an inner or middle ear infection for a long time. She used to scratch at her ear somewhat frequently but there was never any obvious sign of ear infection such as drainage or odour, or signs of discomfort. She is on day 5 of an 8 day course of antibiotics. Should I take her for an MRI if the antibiotic does not result in any improvement? Affected dogs typically show sudden loss of balance, collapsing, disorientation, head tilt and flickering of the eyes nystagmus. These signs can be quite dramatic for owners and dogs alike, so this disease represents a serious welfare concern. Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College analysed the anonymised veterinary clinical records in the VetCompass programme from over , dogs across the UK. They found dogs had received veterinary care for vestibular disease during the study. Compared with crossbreed dogs, French Bulldogs were 9 times more likely to develop vestibular disease, whilst Bulldogs were over 6 times more likely. These findings add to a growing body of evidence on high count of diseases that are predisposed in French Bulldogs and Bulldogs and that suggest these breeds have important welfare issues. The following breeds were also at increased risk compared with crossbreeds: King Charles spaniels 5 times , Cavalier King Charles spaniels 4 times and Springer spaniels 3 times. Despite the dramatic clinical signs shown by dogs with vestibular disease, there is some good news from the study. Many of the affected dogs that are diagnosed with vestibular disease have a high chance of improving after an average of 4 days, as this study shows. The most common presenting signs seen in the affected dogs were head tilt, flickering of the eyes nystagmus , and ataxia. Therefore, owners may be encouraged to trial treatment which is generally affordable and to monitor for signs of recovery which are often seen within a few days after diagnosis in a great proportion of cases. We can now provide owners of older dogs with the latest statistics on survival and risk so that owners can make better decisions on the care of their aging family pets. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

It is important to realize that regular brushing, bathing, and grooming are different things. Grooming includes the trimming of the hair, and is usually done in tandem with bathing or directly after but does not need to happen quite as frequently, although you are welcome to do so if you would like. Bathing helps you check in on your Labradoodle, maintain their coat from tangling, and keeps them healthy and clean. Labradoodles should be bathed every 2 to 3 weeks but can go up to 4 or 5 weeks depending on the time of year and their other grooming habits. For example, a dog will shed more in the fall and spring as he or she prepares for the cold or hot weather respectively; you will want to bathe him or her more during this time. Bathing your Labradoodle regularly helps you take care of their hair and also allows you to inspect all areas of their body. You will want to take into consideration the amount of shedding happening as well as the amount of outside time your Labradoodle is getting. If it is a high shedding season, you will want to bathe and groom your Labradoodle more frequently to assist in the shedding process. Similarly, when they spend a lot of time outdoors they get dirtier with sweat, mud, pollen, or sticks and need a more regular grooming routine as well. Since a Labradoodle coat repels dirt anyway, this should not be difficult. Simply follow the standard guidelines, and you should be fine. Labradoodle puppies actually need less bathing than full-grown Labradoodles, except in the case of visible dirt. When a Labradoodle puppy is developing his or her adult fur coat, his or her body will be attempting to regulate the oils that help to prevent dry skin among other concerns. Additionally, it is not until a dog has reached past the six- to eight-month range that his or her adult coat has become more water-resistant. Thus, as your Labradoodle puppy grows and plays, it is important to consider only bathing once per month or unless you can see visible dirt. If you are able to simply brush the dirt away, and your puppy does not have a strong odor, you may consider doing this to spread the bathing process out. Daily brushing is not necessary but will make the scheduled grooming less intensive. Labradoodles are pretty playful dogs all throughout their lifetime, but this may be especially true during their puppy years. Therefore, you may find that your Labradoodle puppy tends to roll around in the dirt more than he or she will in later years. If this is the case, then the basic brushing or rinsing method may be preferable to bathing weekly. Many people wonder when it is safe to first bathe a puppy. Puppies can be bathed as soon as they are ready and able to go home. Keep in mind, though, that bathing a puppy can be a scary process for them, so you will want to consider a few tricks to make the process more fun. For example, you may bathe them in a smaller bin than a large white tub, run the water prior to baths so that the initial process is not as loud, and provide a treat before and after they complete a job well done in the bath. By creating a safe and fun environment and reflecting an exciting personality for them to mirror, your Labradoodle will have a better likelihood of enjoying bath time from the start. How often you groom your Labradoodle will largely depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Many Labradoodles do not need to be fully groomed more than four times per year. You can minimize full shaves by trimming more regularly before a full shave is needed. Keep an eye out for signs of wax buildup and excessive ear hair; these may be indications of ear mites or disease. You put the solution into each ear, massage it for seconds, and then wipe it out using a tissue. Check with your vet for tips on loose hair removal and which solution to use. Labradoodles have a thick, curly type of coat which means it will take longer to bathe them in comparison to other dogs with straight or thinner coat types. Choosing when you will bathe your Labradoodle, as well as having all of your bathing tools ready in advance is important for a successful bath. Do not expect to be done in a few minutes like you would with a short-haired or small dog. One thing to note is that if you want your Labradoodle to have time outside afterward for drying purposes or just to help them be comfortable before bed, you should aim for mid-day so the sun is out and they have plenty of drying time. Otherwise, you may choose to dry them with a towel or blow dryer if they will let you do so. Keep in mind, though, that many dogs are scared of loud noises, so your Labradoodle may take some warming up to a hairdryer if this is the option you choose to go with. Knowing What You Need Getting the right products and equipment is very important for bathing your Labradoodle. Below, I will include a section on great shampoos and conditioners to use with your furry friend. If you are comfortable just using your regular tub, you will not really need much more. Just a couple of towels and maybe a hairdryer for drying as well as a good slicker brush to detangle after will be the essentials! Ideally, you will have a hose or removable showerhead so that you can rinse it easier. If you decide that you would rather use something other than a regular tub, you may need access to other tools to help make this process go smoothly. You may choose to use a bin for them to stand in and a bucket to transport water for rinsing purposes. By choosing something that will require less effort on your part, you will be more accessible to your dog and make this process a fun and routine experience for him or her. The Process in the Bath for your Labradoodle Acclimate Your Labradoodle and Rinse The first thing you will need to do is get your Labradoodle used to the bath and showerhead. A bath is not something that a dog has naturally been bred to understand, so it takes a little coaching and familiarizing on your part. Many dogs quickly acclimate to the process, but it is helpful if you are there encouraging them along the way both in practice and in attitude. To help acclimate your Labradoodle to the bath, put a little water in the bottom of the tub and allow them to stand in it. Making sure it is warm is a good idea to get them a positive first impression. This can be done in a quiet and calm fashion to show your Labradoodle that this is nothing to be scared of or dreaded. After you have gotten them more comfortable with their surroundings the tub plus a small amount of water , try turning on the showerhead or hose attachment while petting them. Let them see it is not harmful and allow them to get used to the noise and feeling. Again, your calming presence and helpful comfort will be helpful if they are more fearful of the bath or bathing devices. Add Products and Check on Their Skin Once you are able to get them fully rinsed off as in there is no visible dirt on the fur and their coat is entirely wet , you will want to lather them with the product of your choice. Please ensure that this product is safe for your dog by checking with your vet or by using products that are designed for your fur baby. When you are lathering them with the suds, it is best to use your hands to do this so that you can feel around under the coat on the skin for any problems such as lumps, bumps, or parasitic ticks. Regularly feeling them including during bath time will help you to detect ticks or abnormalities earlier on and could save your Labradoodle from experiencing much worse pains. This is considered more of a preventative health approach than a reactive one. Keep in mind it is good to avoid ears on Labradoodles when rinsing and using products. Their floppy, large ears are prone to infections and issues. By using your hands to rinse and wash them, you will have much more control over the areas of the body that receive treatment. As they may be excited and moving about more freely, you can help to show them how to stay calm by holding them lovingly as you rinse them. It will be important for you to consider wearing clothes that you do not mind getting wet or sudsy so that you can feel comfortable providing whatever support your pup may need during bath time. Rinse and Maybe Repeat After lathering your Labradoodle with shampoo and inspecting by rustling your fingers through his or her fur, you should thoroughly rinse them off. You will want to make sure to use the hose or showerhead to get all areas of them thoroughly rinsed off. Be sure that there are no more bubbles or suds that are coming off from their hair as you complete the process. This is particularly important because leaving in shampoo by accident can cause worse tangling after the bath. So, rather than helping in the grooming process, this can actually hurt their fur and can become painful for them. Additionally, this can cause the next bath and grooming time to be much more difficult for you as you will have to untangle more fur than you would have had you just rinsed your dog off completely the first time. Drying Drying the coat of a Labradoodle is no easy task! If you know anyone with thick, curly hair or if that is you in this case , then that person can absolutely verify that drying their hair is likely the lengthiest part of the hair maintenance process. When drying off a Labradoodle, you can expect to go through large towels during this. You will want to use towels that have a higher absorbency, but they do not have to specifically be designed for use with a dog. Using a hairdryer if your pup will let you can improve drying time significantly! Many dogs get very excited positively or negatively by loud noises such as hairdryers. If your dog is positively excited about the hairdryer, you will want to hold them more firmly while you dry them off- though be sure that this is still considered a fun activity for your pup. If they are negatively excited by the loud hairdryer, be sure to warn them before you turn it on, calmly approach them, and keep the intervals of use short. Take extra care to dry their ears, using tissue or cotton, to make sure they do not have water caught in there for long. It is important to note that just like humans should not cram a Q-tip into the ear canal as this can actually push and pack wax and other substances further into the canal , you will want to follow the same precautions for your dog. Wipe off any surface of the ear that is visible to the human eye, but do not go any further. Allowing tangles to sit can cause them to become much worse — and the last thing you want is to end up at a groomer after spending time and effort attempting to do this on your own. Similar to human hair, one of the best things you can do is to use a thick bristle comb on the fur while it is still wet. This will ensure that the tangles are removed thoroughly without breaking or damaging the hair. You can find thick bristle combs specifically designed for dogs, or you can even just use one that is designed for human hair as long as you remain cautious and aware of your dog during the grooming process. Brushing with a thin bristle brush or comb before they are dry can cause their hair to break or come out more easily, so waiting to brush them is the best option here. If you are going to attempt to do this on your own, this is also the best time to trim them as well. If you notice they need it and have learned how to do so without causing harm to your dog there are several areas you can learn online then taking off a bit of length can be a great thing for them and you. If you are unfamiliar with the trimming process or do not have the right tools, it is important to take your dog to a professional groomer instead of attempting this and accidentally harming your furry friend. This would absolutely delay their enjoyment of bath and grooming time. Then, the owner can attempt in a small capacity on areas instead of the entire coat that he or she feels comfortable prior to the groomer trimming the rest, and then eliminate the groomer completely. When considering purchasing a shampoo and conditioner for your Labradoodle, it is critical to remember that you must find one that is designed for doggy fur. Sometimes, human baby shampoos can be used on dogs, but it is best to purchase one that is designed specifically for use with animals. Here are a few to consider: 1. Ph Balanced! Made In The Usa! Buy With Confidence! Any price and availability information displayed on [relevant Amazon Site s , as applicable] at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product. One of the things that I love about using this brand of shampoo is the fact that it makes untangling so much easier afterward. I am not positive as to why this is the case, although I assume it has something to do with the oatmeal. Either way, it definitely feels great for their fur. Healthy Breeds Pet Shampoo is a great product that is also economical. This brand is a great, safe choice if you are looking for a shampoo to try out for the first time! Labradoodles need to be bathed every two to three weeks. This will help clean their fur and allow you to check their skin. Dogs can get dirty really easily, and they need regular grooming to remove dirt and dust from their coats. Bathing your Labradoodle is not only essential to keep them clean and healthy, it helps to prevent hair knots and matting As a single coated and low shedding breed, Labradoodles will require deep rinsing when they are bathed. A small Doodle puppy having a bath Regular brushing, bathing, and groomings are all different things. Grooms include the trimming of the fur, and is usually done together with bathing or directly before. Groom every weeks for most Labradoodle coats Bathing helps with both aesthetics, coat health, and prevention of skin conditions Brushing for a wavy or curly coat LAbradoodle should be at least every few days the more the merrier If you own a straight coat Labradoodle shedding you should consider how much shedding is happening. If it is a higher shedding season, you should bathe and groom your dog more frequently to assist in shedding. Also, if your dog spends a lot of time outside, he gets dirty with sweat, mud, pollens, or sticks. He needs a more frequent grooming routine. This causes your dog to itch. Grooming for Labradoodles like Max after the beach means thorough rinsing with fresh water, followed by a Gentle Shampoo and brush at home. Labradoodle puppies need bathing just the same as full-grown Labradoodles. However a spot clean here and there is usually more appropriate for a puppy. They frequently make messes so a full bath is overkill and can hurt the coat. Puppies love playing in the dirt. This is normal behavior. Puppies often also struggle with potty training Puppies make a beeline toward bad smells and messes So expect a lot of spot cleans and mini baths for your Labradoodle puppy. How Old Should Labradoodle Puppies Be For Bath In terms of a full bath, you can start bathing your puppy when he or she is old enough to understand what is happening. Make sure you do this in an appropriate place, such as a bathtub or sink. Puppies need to learn about water before being bathed, so try to teach your puppy to enjoy baths. Do this by slowly introducing the concept, making it seem fun, and minimizing background distractions. Bathing dogs in a smaller container makes them feel more comfortable. These small gestures all work well together to create and reinforce a positive experience. Instead of using adult Labradoodle shampoo — go for a gentle puppy shampoo or even some baby shampoos if they are Vet and Groomer approved. Straight hair dogs still can have some Poodle-esque snout furnishings. This one needs a bath! A Labradoodle needs to be groomed and trimmed about once every two months. Trimming the hair around the face, butt, and ears is important because this is where most dirt accumulates. Our detailed grooming guide for Labradoodles gives 11 tips for DIY grooming. It is very possible to confidently groom a Labradoodle, but it takes preparation and practice. How to Bathe Your Labradoodle Bathing your Labradoodle takes longer than bathing many other breeds because of their thick coats. You should set aside some time before you bathe your Labradoodle so you can prepare everything you need beforehand. Some Labradoodles LOVE the water and playing fetch At Home Labradoodle Bathing Shopping List A decent shampoo that suits Labradoodle coats does not need to be crazy expensive Towels many, many towels Scissors even though we are not grooming, in case of knots or surprises Rubber gloves I do not use but many do Dog brush optional — I suggest a metal comb as well Small bucket for rinsing Tear stain remover if your Labradoodle has a light coat The Process in the Bath for your Labradoodle Acclimate your Labradoodle to the bath by putting some water in the bottom of a tub and allowing him to stand in it. Dry Time a Challenge Drying a Labradoodle is hard work! You need to use lots of towels, and you need to be careful not to scare your puppy too much. Use a hairdryer if you like, and be careful when turning it on. Also, take extra care to dry their eyes and ears. Most dogs find the noise of a hairdryer overwhelming. Brush a dry dog only. A wet dog can be combed blunt steel comb though, these are so helpful. You should bathe your dog fully when he is 3 months old. Use quality puppy shampoo and conditioners designed for puppies. Do mini baths or fast baths for the puppy coat until this age. This helps make future baths much easier. Even getting used to the running water and towel dry will help your dog be happier as an adult doodle during a grooming session. The Consequences of too Many Baths for Labradoodles If you wash a Labradoodle too frequently, we risk damaging their adult coat. The coat needs time to grow and develop properly. If you wash your dog too often, you could damage its natural protective oils and leave it feeling rough and scratchy. The likelihood of skin irritation or reaction to cleaning equipment also increased with an over-washed coat. Dry skin, loose hair, and irritated skin need to be monitored. Realistically this will not be a concern for most of us. Our Labradoodle Max does visit the beach often, so he gets washed in Summer FAR more frequently than the other times of the year. We try to efficiently wash him using safe and gentle shampoo — but cut down the repeat lathering. When winter comes round, he bathes far less frequently — but we use more shampoo and later more when he does wash. A happy gray Poodle and Doodle dog. Their fur looks dull and lifeless. The entire coat has an odor If you have a sedentary, indoor Labradoodle — do NOT feel obliged to bathe your dog every 2 weeks. That said, you can help make bath time easier for your Labrador by starting early and introducing him to water gently. Use treats and praises to introduce him to all elements of the bathing process. A dog needs to learn how to take baths, shampoo, conditioner, wash rags, brushes, and blow dryer. It takes time and effort to teach a dog everything he or she needs to know about bathing. Start with a few short baths then gradually increase the frequency. Be patient. Dogs and puppies can take many different attempts to understand and learn a new concept. Should you blow-dry a Labradoodle coat? Start by using a gentle hairdryer setting. I know this sounds ridiculous as even the quiet settings are often very intense. But as possible, build up the settings slowly. Start with the outside of the legs — most dogs tolerate this the most. Then dry the legs. Save the head, chest, and face for the very last. The restraint is calming a bit and safe and makes maneuvering around a displeased Labradoodle much easier. It is the only area that requires you to have a little extra knowledge and to be cautious. We have a guide specifically about ear cleaning. A big number of issues that Labradoodles have with health and odor all relate to the ears. Ear infections are common, as are grime and mites caught in the ear hair. The Curly coat type is particularly prone to this issue. It was the most surprising area of grooming that I have encountered with Poodle Mix breeds. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Regular grooming sessions also allow you to examine his coat, teeth, eyes, ears, and nails for signs of problems. How much grooming your Doodle needs depends mostly on the type of coat he has. Labradoodles have three different types of coats and variations within these three. Hair Coat Your dog will most likely shed if he has a hair coat that may be straight or wavy. But this is also the easiest coat of all to care for as your dog will naturally molt. You are more likely to get this type of coat from F1 Labradoodles, especially those puppies which take after their Labrador parent. Wool and Fleece Coat The other two coat types are wool and fleece, and both of these are low or minimal shedding types. Australian Labradoodles have one of these types of coats, as well as most other multi-generation Doodles. Although these dogs are likely to be low or minimal shedding, there is no guarantee that the dog will not shed. Labradoodle coat types vary from one dog to another, even within litters. Wool and fleece coats are high maintenance as far as grooming is concerned. If you have experience, then you can clip or hand strip the dog yourself. Otherwise, you will need to take your Doodle to a professional groomer and factor in the additional expense. Whichever way you look at it, a well-groomed Doodle is a joy to behold. It can lead to repetitive ear infections, and in severe cases, the dog can go deaf or require an operation to change the shape of his ear canal. If your dog is a low or minimal shedder, then the hair inside the ear flap should be regularly plucked. You can also do this at home or ask your groomer to do it during the visits. Keep an eye out for redness or inflammation of the ear flap or inner ear. You can also ask your groomer for tips. Some owners or a veterinary ear cleaner bathe the inner ears of the doodles with cotton wool and warm water. Symptoms include yellow and brown build-up of tartar along the gum line, inflamed gums, and persistent bad breath. Take things slowly in the beginning. Give him lots of praise, and your Doodle will start looking forward to his teeth brushing sessions. Many have flavors that your Doodle will find tasty. The real benefit comes from the actual action of the brush on the teeth. Continue this until he looks forward to licking the paste. It can be instant or might take a few days. Put a small amount on your finger and then rub it gently on one of the big canine teeth at the front of his mouth. The next step is actually to start brushing! Then, gently move the brush backward and forward. Start with his front teeth only and then gradually do the bottom ones. Labradoodles love games, and with a bit of encouragement and patience, brushing teeth can become a fun task for both of you. Grooming for Labradoodle — Nail Trimming The nails of your Doodle must be kept short for the paws to remain healthy. They can also break easily, and this usually happens at the base of the nail, where blood vessels and nerves are located and will require a trip to the vet. If you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, then they are too long. Most have safety guards to prevent you from cutting the nails too short. You can see where the quick ends on a white nail, but not on a dark nail. Clip only the hook-like part of the nail that turns down. Many dogs dislike having their nails trimmed. You can make it a painless procedure by getting him used to having his paws handled when he is a puppy. If you accidentally cut the quick, stop the bleeding with some styptic powder. Some dogs may have tough nails that are hard to trim, but this may be less stressful for your dog, with less chance of pain or bleeding. Frequent bathing removes natural oils and causes the coat to become dry and harsh. Use a mild shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Stand your doodle in a tub, basin, or bath and put cotton balls in his ears to keep them dry inside. Wet him with warm water and apply shampoo from the neck down. Put a small amount of shampoo on your hands and gently wash his head. Rinse your doodle thoroughly with warm water. To keep the soap out of his eyes, put a dampened wash-cloth over his eye. Rub your doodle dry with a towel and then blow-dry if necessary and if he lets you! Then give him a brush or a comb. Grooming for Labradoodle — Cleaning the eyes If your dog has a discharge, if his eyes get a little sticky, or if he has dried deposits in the corner of his eyes, clean them gently with damp cotton wool. Do not use anything else unless instructed to do so by your vet. Ask your groomer to empty the anal glands every time you take your doodle for grooming. If not done then the blockages can lead to infection. Larger Labradoodles usually can express their own anal glands and do not need to have this done. This does not hurt your labradoodle but be sure to tell your groomer if your labradoodle has had a problem with his anal glands in the past or if you have had your Labradoodles anal glands removed. Grooming for Labradoodle — Brushing a Labradoodle Scruffy Doodles will need a good brushing once a week, whereas Doodles with fleece or wool coats will require an intensive grooming regime to avoid having to be clipped short. How to Brush Your Labradoodle Several brushing and combing sessions a week will keep the average Doodles neat and tidy. Daily brushing is even better if possible. Then go through the coat with a comb to make sure you have no mats or knots anywhere. Choosing the Right Brush Choosing the right brush is very important. Scruffy Doodles need pin brushes, which have long, round-ended stainless-steel or chrome-plated pins and a steel comb. Short and medium-coated Doodles will need bristle brushes and a comb. For the fleece and wool coated Doodles, you will need a slicker brush for removing mats and dead hair. Also, a steel pinned comb to make sure that there are no tangles left. There are also rubber curry combs to polish smooth coats and remove dead hair. When brushing, always check for burrs and other stubborn plant material, mats — which most frequently form behind the ears and under the legs — and any cuts or scrapes on the skin itself. Doodles shed, and some shed more than others. Regular brushing will help to keep the shedding under control. Establish a routine that you will follow through with or you will end up with a puppy with nails that may rip or cause problems walking properly, ears that have infections, and coats that are severely matted to the skin and cause severe discomfort for your dog. These are the areas that are most prone to matting. Part the hair and brush from the base of the coat in small sections. Many people only brush the surface of the coat and do not realize the dog is matting very badly next to the skin. Remember, if you cannot maintain basic brushing and grooming on your own, then you will need to budget for using a professional groomer. You should still try to clip nails and clean ears weekly at home, and give your dog a brushing at least once a week. BATHING When you groom your puppy or dog, you will want them to have a clean coat so your scissors and clipper blades work efficiently and do not wear down more quickly. Here are some general, simple tips for basic labradoodle grooming when doing your doodle at home. Eyes: Your Labradoodle should always be able to see well and not have hair hanging and restricting vision or growing up and into the eyes from the bridge of the nose! Using blunt tipped scissors, trim the hair over the bridge of nose and in between eyes so vision is not obstructed. Hair that hangs over the eyes should be trimmed neatly across the brow blending down into the sides of the face. If your dog gets eye gunk, use eye wipes every few days to keep them clean. A Labradoodle with long ear hair does NOT look like the standard for the Labradoodle, it looks more like a Cocker spaniel. Shape the ears and blend hair neatly into the top of the head. This will help prevent infections. You can use a clipper with 10 blade for a good length in this area. If the canal has a lot of hair inside, you will need to pluck it out in very small amounts to prevent irritation. Clean ear canal with solution and then use ear powder to eliminate moisture. Paws: Trim paws in a nicely rounded shape so that hair does not hang over the paw and cannot be walked on. Completely clip hair from in between pads on bottom of feet. This is most easily done with an electric clipper and a 30 blade. Keeping the paws shaped nicely will aid in less debris attaching to feet when outside and being drug into your home. Long muzzle hair results in beards that drip with water every time your dog gets a drink. The hair on the sides of the muzzle should be even with the bottom of the lower jaw. This is an area of the body we frequently see with matting. Hair is left to grow and grow and GROW and you not realize it is severely matting close to the tail. This helps prevent matting and urine or feces from building up on the coat when your dog uses the bathroom. Body: If you like a longer coat, more brushing and maintenance will be required. Here are a couple examples of shorter cuts that most find easy to maintain. According to what people are saying, this pup is a hypoallergenic dream come true. The generation of dog you choose will determine how much time, effort and money into maintaining that fabulous fur coat. The first important step in recognizing the needs of your Australian Labradoodle lies in knowing which generation your dog is from. Each Labradoodle generation determines the coat type, and the coat type dictates the level of care and grooming your dog will need. A first generation Labradoodle, which is the offspring between a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle, can be expected to have that is more like the hair of the Labrador retriever. Mate one of the F1 pups with a full-blooded Standard Poodle, and you have a litter of Labradoodles known as the F2B generation; they are second generation Labradoodles that have been crossed back with a Poodle. Two F1 Labradoodles bred with each other will produce F2 dogs, and these dogs will have a wool coat. These are the second generation Labradoodles. The F3 Labradoodles like the multigenerational labradoodle puppies we raise are highly desired for their fleece coats; these coats are the least likely to shed or agitate allergies. You may be wondering at this point just how important the generation of your dog really is. This dog will have a short, shiny coat that is sometimes wavy; sometimes it looks shaggy. Although you may need to trim errant tufts with a pair of scissors, always avoid shaving the coat completely. Close shaves destroys the hair shafts and endanger your dog. Brush this type of coat with a soft bristle brush, and brush in the direction the hair points. This action will help to distribute the natural oils that protect the hair coat and keep it shiny. These oils also help to prevent leaves, twigs and bits of dirt sticking to the coat. You may find that a dog with a hair coat needs only occasional bathing. The increased thickness of the coat will require a longer brushing period because you have to be sure that you do more than straighten out the top layer. Brushing each layer of fur can be tedious work, but your efforts will pay off in the end. Be prepared to commit a couple of days each week to the task of thorough brushing. Nothing else was as soft and luxurious as this fleece, and whoever owned it was respected enough to be the ruler of the kingdom. Owning an F3 or F3B Australian Labradoodle may not improve your position as a successor to the throne, but your Doodle will have the kind of fleece Jason and company were willing to risk their lives for. The fleece coat is non-shedding — perfect for homes where fly-away dog fur is an issue. You may occasionally find a random bit of hair on the floor, but for the most part, any small bits of fleece will end up in your matting comb. The hair you do find in the matting comb will be the undercoat that has died. In fact, the fleece coat on a Labradoodle may need a little more care than the other coat types. An F3 or F3B generation Australian Labradoodle will visit the groomers as often as his Poodle cousin does — about once every four to six weeks — for trimming and clipping. You are still not off the hook just because your Labradoodle is sporting a shorter clip. Plan on combing your dog regularly to minimize tangles. Apply for your puppy today! Our multi-generational Australian labradoodle puppies are wonderful pets! Take me to the application! There are plenty of reasons to visit the groomer. When you tell your groomer you are bringing in a Labradoodle for the works, he or she will likely want to know ahead of time which type of coat your dog has. Your answer will say a lot about how much time it will take for the session. On average, your Doodle will visit the groomer three or four times a year, minimum, for coat care, which includes shampooing, trimming and possibly stripping, which is the removal of dead hairs. If you prefer a shorter clip for your dog or you live in a warmer climate, you may decide that more frequent visits are in order. There are breed standard for trimming and clipping. For example, the preferred length for a Doodle coat is three inches, the ears must be trimmed just so, and the muzzle is reduced to an inch in length. A good groomer will know the standard clip for Australian Labradoodles, but if you find a look you like, show your groomer the picture so it can be duplicated on your dog. You can take on some of the care yourself. One of the first things you can do is brush and comb your dog yourself before you visit your groomer. After all, time is money, and the time you save this professional is time he or she can put into the clipping rather than the detangling. Australian Labradoodle breeders and owners recommend these grooming tips for all Doodles, regardless of generation. When Your Dog Is a Puppy The cute little fluff ball cradled in your arms will quickly learn to look to you for everything. Talk to your pup while you are brushing her. The objective here is far less about the brushing and more about associating pleasant feelings when you touch her face, feet, and other sensitive areas. Most oatmeal-based shampoos are considered non-toxic and soothing for young pups, but your puppy will not need as much bathing and coat care as older dogs. The Tireless Teens Dogs love to explore, and they are attracted to new experiences by scent. Your dog will want to roll around in the odors that intrigue her, wearing them like the latest fashion trend for all to notice. Here are some quick tips: Begin with the appropriate shampoo. Have your dog sit on a shower mat; it gives a feeling sure-footedness Brush and comb thoroughly, then shampoo Rinse thoroughly and then rinse again — shampoo residue can cause itching Towel dry and air dry After shampooing, let your Doodle dry completely before brushing him again. They will tell you that there is no better canine companion for their home or for their kids. When you are looking for the right Australian Labradoodle for your family, talk to the breeder. Good breeders can tell you about the coat your puppy has and what kind of coat his parents had. Ask questions until you are satisfied that you are getting the dog you want and are ready to care for. Condiment Bottle Wait…what? A condiment bottle? Oftentimes shampoo and conditioner can be very thick, or needs to be diluted according to the instructions. This hack prevents wasted product, helps to control where you want it to go, and provides a much more even distribution of product. Simply put two inches of shampoo or conditioner into the bottle and fill the rest with warm water. Shake gently to mix. You can use regular bath towels you might need a few , however using a dedicated dog towel will be way more effective at drying a Doodle with a longer coat. Specialized dog towels are super absorbent and can hold up to many times their own weight in water. Dog hair dryers are different from regular hair dryers in that they are higher in velocity. This means that they can forcibly blow out and dry dog hair quickly and efficiently. You can let your Doodle air dry. Alas, air drying is not recommended for Doodles due to their thick — and oftentimes curly — coats. If a dog with long hair or an undercoat is left to air dry, it may cause matting of the fur and other skin problems like hot spots. Using a dog hair dryer will help to prevent matting by making it much easier to brush through. Drying Before Grooming If you are bathing in preparation for a home grooming session, you have some options when it comes to drying the hair. You can if you want to, but air-drying is acceptable in this case. However, if you will be using clipper combs, you really, really need to blow dry your Doodle with a force dryer before clipping them. In the video, we demo a pet shower sprayer, dog towel, and force dryer. For Doodles, brushing out the coat entirely before bath time is extremely important. This is because matted dog hair will get worse when wet. Be sure to brush all the way down to the skin and clear out every single knot and mat before the bath. First, rinse your Doodle with warm water all over the body to get the coat thoroughly wet, except for the head and face. Using your hands or a dog bathing brush, lather the product deep into the coat. Get it around their entire body, including the belly, sanitary area, and tail — but not the head and face just yet. Shampooing her up. Rinse the product off your Doodle with warm water. Feel with your hands to ensure that all the product washes away. Rinse with warm water until all areas are wet, ensuring that water does not get into the ears or run directly into their eyes and nose. A tearless dog shampoo is nice to have on hand, specifically for the face. Lather the shampoo deep into the hair on the face and muzzle, paying extra attention to tear stains or beard stains. Be extra careful not to get the shampoo in the eyes, ears, or mouth. Conditioner is optional on the head and face, but recommended for Doodles with a curly coat. Use your hands to rinse and to ensure that all the product washes away. Again, be extra careful not to get the shampoo in the eyes, ears, or mouth. Use one hand to cover the eyes or pull back the ears while rinsing those areas. Step 4 Dry Your Doodle First, take a step back and encourage your Doodle to shake themself off a few times. This will help eliminate excess water before you proceed with the next drying methods. Start off with a low power setting and a low temperature. Blow the air all over while using your fingers to comb through and separate the wet hairs. Gradually turn up the power, and temperature if necessary. Chloe is wearing a Happy Hoodie to shield her from the loudness of the dryer. Once your Doodle is completely dry, move on to the next step. Now you know how to bathe a Doodle! As a breed they have a great temperament. However, it can still happen, and French Bulldog puppy biting problems are one of the most challenging issues I am asked about on social media. Speaking from real-life experience, our Frenchie Claude has never bitten anybody aggressively. However, he was very nippy as a puppy, and in truth, a lot of that was my fault due to the way I would play with him. I soon learned fast that I was going to get nipped! Our next door neighbour also has a French Bulldog puppy who was constantly biting. I worked with them to try and stop the biting problem and had great success. It was particularly important as they have young kids to consider. Please read down and take everything in. I believe this is the most comprehensive guide to stopping a French Bulldog biting that you will find anywhere online. Make a drink, sit back, and I will teach you how to stop the keep biting problem, starting off with why it happens. Why French Bulldog Bite? But this can start off with something as normalised as barking. If you decide to not heed the warning, the barking can then progress to a growling and showing of the teeth. If you continue to approach and invade their space, the bite is the next natural step. However, with a more aggressive Frenchie this bite can be very painful as they have very strong jaws. For parents this will be of particular concern if a French Bulldog bites your child. Do French Bulldogs bite a lot? As puppies, yes, Frenchies can bite and nip as part of teething and play. As a general rule of thumb, they will get over this behaviour. Generally speaking though, Frenchies are a non-aggressive breed. Most of it will be down to how the owner has trained and raised the dog. Why French Bulldog puppies bite Sometimes the puppies will start to bite for fun, others will bite during the teething phase read more about teething here. Frenchies use their mouths to explore, and small nips here and there can be explained away by their age. Other will bite and act aggressive out of fear, and others will bite too enthusiastically during play. Another reason why Frenchie puppies bite can also be to try to show that they are the ones who are in charge of your relationship. If this is the case with your puppy, it must be stopped immediately as if you have a puppy that believes it is dominant, its nibbling will be just the beginning of your troubles. Whichever scenario you face, biting is a behavior that needs to be nipped no pun intended in the bud as soon as possible when the dog is younger. This will help to prevent bigger problems as the Frenchie gets older. But there is a fine line between biting and playing. Our own Frenchie Claude is a classic example. As a puppy I would play with him probably a little too enthusiastically, and he would go for my hands as a result — thankfully he grew out of it, and yours probably will too. Adult Frenchies that bite are a problem However, French Bulldogs that bite into adulthood are problematic, especially if the biting suddenly starts with no previous form. In this case, please take the dog to the vet immediately to rule out any illness or injury that could be causing the biting problems. In cases such as this, vets will often recommend a dog behaviour specialist. How to stop your French Bulldog puppy from biting If your Frenchie puppy starts to show aggressive behaviour and biting it does need to be stopped as soon as it can. Otherwise it could continue into adulthood and become a bigger problem that is behavioural rather than playful. Squeal like a puppy bite inhibition When puppies play together, they will squeal when bitten by another pup. In the litter you will see this happening, and the squeal results in the biting puppy backing away. As humans we can mimic this behaviour. This is a hugely popular method used by dog trainers as it makes your puppy believe that he hurts you every time he gives you a bite. You might find that your puppy takes this telling off to heart. When we tried it with our puppy he would get all submissive and run to my wife for reassurance. The key is to not comfort them at this point, as this could lead to more biting. By shunning the puppy momentarily, you will get the best results. It sounds harsh, but if you really do want your French Bulldog to stop biting, you need to stick firm. The sooner you start doing this, the sooner your puppy will learn that biting is not ok. It really does work very well. By doing so, you are encouraging the bad behaviour. This is one of the most important tips, and to not do so will only prolong the period you have to try to stop the bad attitude. Then place another finger under the chin. Hold this position for 10 seconds, but not too hard. Your puppy will feel uncomfortable it will train him to not keep biting you. A dog trainer gave me this tip and swears by it. It involves wearing a pair of gloves with something on it that tastes bad. My trainer recommended a bitter spray see it on Amazon. After a few bites, your Frenchie will soon learn that if it bites you, it will not taste good! If you see the puppy starting to come towards your hands or fingers, move them out the way and use a chew toy instead. By focusing on the toy instead, the puppy will learn that hands are not for biting and will associate a chew toy with biting instead. The toys we found worked best for biting and chewing were the Kong on Amazon view prices. You can also see some other recommendations in my chew toy page. Frenchie puppies love to chase feet and bite at shoes, and yes, it is fun, but curb it sooner rather than later. Puppies love biting feet, shoes, and shoelaces as part of play. Use the same preventative methods listed in points 1 and 2 to discourage feet nipping. From talking to animal behaviouralists and vets, they say that a physical punishment will only exacerbate the biting problem and create more fear and aggression in your French Bulldog. Fear is the root of so many biting problems and will only make your puppy feel scared of you and be more inclined to deliver a nasty nip. But you still need to teach your Frenchie puppy to be accepting when your hands do go near the mouth. As puppies, you will need to fish things out of their mouth, and into adulthood check their teeth and administer medicines. You need to train them to not bite your hands when your fingers need to go into the mouth area. Do this by giving them a small treat and then quickly taking it out of their mouth. Train your Frenchie puppy to not bite over food Another flashpoint will be food. Puppies are very protective of their food bowl and will wolf it down in seconds to stop anybody else from eating it. But this behaviour that was learned from a young age, will also result in biting problems around their food dish. Food aggression is a problem even with the most well-behaved Frenchie so your aim here is to train the puppy that you can take food away from it with no aggressive response. Keep repeating the lesson until your French Bulldog puppy learns that you, the master, have control over food and can give or take it away at will. If you have kids, then also get them to practice this as the dog should never have dominance over any member of your household. If you can stop your French Bulldog puppy biting over food, then your almost there with having a perfectly well adjusted and non-aggressive pet. However, you might still experience it in other scenarios such as them being jealous of another pet, child, or visitor. It can also occur when you try to get your dog to get down off a couch or bed to make way for you. This is there way of exerting dominance over you so nip it in the bud by reinforcing good behaviour. Socialise your puppy with other dogs Make sure that your puppy has opportunities to play with other dogs. Puppies learn from each other and particularly older dogs. You can help stop a French bulldog puppy biting by wearing them out and learning from adult dogs. Not only do they learn from each other, but they will also wear each other out. Expose your puppy to loud noises and fearful situations Now obviously I am not suggesting that you go out of your way to scare your young dog, but it is important to expose them to situations that could spark fear, aggression, and biting. Think of things such as loud noises from traffic passing by, children shouting, or noisy public environments. The sooner you can get your Frenchie trained to be calm in these situations, the more chance you stand of them not reacting badly and reacting with a fearful or aggressive bite. Always supervise young children with a puppy A French Bulldog that bites a child is a hugely serious issue. Supervise your dog at all times when around young children to avoid bites and aggression. Whilst French Bulldogs are great with children , you should never leave them alone. When to seek professional help If even after using all these training methods, you still have a French Bulldog that bites, then please talk to your vet immediately. An expert will be able to tell you whether the mouthing of your puppy is normal behaviour or something that requires a treatment plan. There are also specialist animal behaviourists who can help with biting and fear aggression in French Bulldogs. The dangers of a dog bite Adult dogs that bite can be serious problem. People die every year from bites, and more frequently can develop serious infections when a wound goes septic. The result is an open, jagged wound. If the wound becomes infected, it is often severe. The No. You may need hospitalization and require intravenous antibiotics. Compress the wound gently by pressing on it. This will squeeze some blood out which can help to flush out as much of the bacteria as possible. Clean the bite wound with clean water and a mild soap. Press a clean cloth onto the bite to slow the bleeding down. Apply antibiotic cream to the bite wound. Dress the bite wound with a sterile bandage. Consult with a medical professional as soon as you can. Conclusion The general rule to stopping a French Bulldog from biting is to always encourage acceptable behavior and to discourage unacceptable behavior. This rule is fundamental in the training of any dog. Use chew toys and games and not your hands. This means that you or any other person who comes into contact with your puppy must keep in mind the strategy chosen each time your puppy begins to chew. If you have visitors and other family members, communicate with them to adopt the same strategy as you. The bottom line is this; if you do not communicate clearly with your French Bulldog, he will not understand that what he is doing is not good. Do not just expect the puppy to know it for himself. You need to take the role of the pack leader. You might also be interested in: If you enjoyed this guide on how to stop your French Bulldog puppy biting, you might also like these related posts:. No comments Is your French Bulldog biting? Many pets bite from anxiety and fear rather than aggression. With this in mind, French Bulldogs are prone to separation anxiety due to their loyal disposition. Separation anxiety oftentimes stems from changes in the regular household schedule. Working longer hours than usual or traveling more often than your dog is accustomed to may trigger separation anxiety and other strange behavior. Sometimes pets begin acting aggressively due to illness or physical pain. Biting is not a regular characteristic when we think of the French Bulldog. If this a behavior that has just begun out of the blue, then you most certainly want to be cautious, proactive, and responsive. Biting is never a behavior you want to ignore. Luckily, however, there are many ways to find positive solutions. So, try not to worry too much. Whether it is the environment or an emotional trigger, the first thing you want to do is eliminate the source of the problem as much as possible. In the meantime, it is best to create a plan of action, as well. The best thing you can do to eliminate the biting once and for all is to train your Frenchie accordingly. Depending on the circumstances causing the behavior, you will need to find the right training technique for you and your dog. Some strategies to reduce separation anxiety, for example, involve introducing a new treat or toy every time you plan on leaving for an extended period. If you are uncertain, it is best to consult an expert professional. Wrapping up Although it may seem like your French Bulldog has a behavioral problem, try to remember that this biting is just a bad patch that will turn around. Addressing the behavior, finding solutions, and training your Frenchie will have your buddy back into your lap, loving and making you laugh like the dog you know and love! Technique No. It is important to understand why they result into biting so that you can better train them to control their urge. This is why owners should just control what their Frenchie chews on rather than completely preventing them from biting or chewing. It is in the Frenchie puppies nature to bite or chew as they also try to protect themselves. Frenchies also bite as a way to defend themselves against people or things that they think put them in danger. Biting As A Form Of Play French bulldog puppies are naturally playful and one way to show their playfulness is through biting. It is a form of socialization and a bit of rough play. A Frenchie puppy learns to control the intensity of its bite when it plays with other puppies. When it bites too hard and causes pain on another Frenchie, the other puppy will cry loudly to let the Frenchie know. This is a natural way on how Frenchies learn to control their bite. Some may consider them as just a phase that they can outgrow as they mature into adults. Biting usually occurs when Frenchies are puppies because they are still in their teething stage. Like babies who like to chew on different things while they are teething, Frenchie puppies also like to bite and chew on things while they are teething. The process of chewing relieves their gums of the discomfort that they may be feeling because of their erupting teeth. Giving them items that they can chew will help them feel more comfortable as they pass through this stage of their lives. After teething, it is possible for Frenchies to lessen their frequency in biting or chewing. You should establish that you have authority over your Frenchie so that it follows you. With whatever you are training your puppy for, you should be consistent. Make sure the rules are always followed and no exceptions so that your Frenchie learns faster. By yelping out loud and startling your Frenchie puppy every time they bite you, your cute Frenchie will learn that biting is hurtful to you and should not be done. Frenchies also bite as a form of defense. When they feel that they are in danger because of your violence, they are more likely to be aggressive and react with violence too. It helps them with the discomfort that they feel in their gums. To prevent your Frenchie from biting you, you can provide them with alternative chew toys or chew items instead. Giving them iced treats or rags soaked in cold water will help numb their gums and make them feel more comfortable. It is possible that your Frenchie is suffering from anxiety and using biting as an outlet. Finding a way to overcome their anxiety will eventually lead them to stop biting. Contact Us Red Poodles With all the colors available in Poodles it could be hard to choose your puppy. However, it is the red Poodle that is so very rare, so stunning and so special! It does appear that it is a completely separate gene than the other poodle colors. Red Poodles are the newest color developed, it only became an official color in .A red poodle will have black points, nose, gums, under paws and very dark eyes. Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! Most designer dogs have one thing in common: they are crossed with a Poodle. There is a very good reason for that, the Poodle cross brings up the intelligence and ability to train. Crosses also get some of the benefits of the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle, and less shedding. If you live afar, we can safely ship your red poodle puppy to the closest major jet port. Despite being widely accepted as a French breed, development of the Poodle began in Germany as a water dog. Originally a large gun dog in Germany, these dogs were used to pull milk carts. In France, the breed was used primarily as a companion. The smaller Poodles are well known as circus dogs, due to their intelligence. All Poodles, whatever their size, should be well balanced and elegant looking, with a proud carriage. Poodles are gay spirited and good tempered. Colors are white, cream, apricot, brown, black, red, blue and silver. Parti Poodles are a combination of one of those colors and white also. The intelligence of the Poodle has made it a favorite dog to make designer hybrid dogs. The poodle is now mixed with many breeds, making a lot of the designer breeds we sell at Canine Corral. The most popular ones are the Maltipoo, which is a cross between the Maltese and the Poodle. The Shihpoo is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Poodle. The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. These designer dogs are very popular with families who are looking for intelligent, non-shedding breeds that are good with children. The Poodle is also very easy to housebreak and crate train. They are eager to please and pick up a task quickly. Their non-shedding coat is fantastic for people who have allergies.
