WELCOME The Northern Ireland Boxer Rescue Society was formed on 12th October by a group of concerned boxer owners and breeders who were worried about the large number of boxer puppies being bred by back street breeders and puppy farmers mills with no thought or concern for the puppies they produced. Our aim is to help the welfare of the Boxer Breed - specifically those that through no fault of their own become homeless, whether this occurs due to a change in the owners circumstances or because they have been callously abused or abandoned. We compile and maintain a list of people who are prepared to take on a rescue dog and provide a secure and loving home for the rest of the boxers life. All the people on our list have been "home checked" and approved by our committee members who complete a detailed questionnaire to help us select the right home for a particular dog. Please be aware that not everyone passes a home check by us and a promise made to you by the new owner as regards spaying etc, may not actually happen. DONATIONS As with all rescue organisations, we depend on donations through car boot sales, raffle tickets and the like, to help us meet the ongoing kennel and veterinary fees. We spay and neuter all dogs who come to us and we prefer rehome in Northern Ireland so as we can keep check that everything is running smoothly and there are no problems. He has been taught sit, "high five" and down position. He has not however been taught much lead manners. He needs a bit off work in that department. I would reccomend some obedience classes for him as he is very clever. Very friendly with adults, children and dogs. He can be over friendly with dogs in that all he wants is play and he can be a bit "full on". Loves his toys and balls. In the case of the goldendoodle, the blend of the golden retriever and the poodle produces a smart, friendly, loving, social, playful dog. Goldendoodles vs. English Goldendoodles English goldendoodles have a lighter coat, stockier build and are more laid-back. The retriever part of the English goldendoodle is an English golden retriever, which originates from Europe. English golden retrievers contain the stockier and more laid-back traits, and have a lighter coat in comparison to their North American counterpart, whom are typically darker in colour and more slender, with a more active personality. We favour English golden retrievers within our breeding program, and have traveled across Europe acquiring some of the finest European breeding stock to incorporate into our lines. Many breeders in the United States use field retrievers to produce their goldendoodles. These retrievers are bred for field work and tend to be very lanky and hyper. As a result they tend to produce hyper, lanky goldendoodles. This is a good example of why research is essential to finding a conscientious breeder. Appearance and Coat Most people think of goldendoodles as being golden in colour, but they can come in a variety of different colours. Their overall appearance combines a beautiful balance of the golden retriever and the poodle. Well-chosen parents tend to blend the traits of the poodle and the golden in a consistent way. In short, goldendoodles tend to look like shaggy teddy bears! Breeders tend to develop their own style and look of dogs. A SwissRidge goldendoodle can easily be picked out of a crowd as there is a very distinct look and temperament to our dogs. The appearance of a SwissRidge goldendoodle is usually stocky with a well-built frame, beautiful head, and silky, soft, wavy coat. Although every goldendoodle has a different coat, the majority have a wavy coat that sheds minimally, if at all. Breeders will evaluate the puppy at a few weeks old and can often tell the type of coat the dog will have, and can help match you to the best coat type for your situation. Most people with allergies to dog dander are fine with a wavy-coated dog. However, the straighter the coat, the more it sheds, making the dog less suitable for people with allergies. Goldendoodles with a curly coat are similar to the poodle and will not shed. Even people with severe allergies to dander typically do well with a curly-coated goldendoodle. Since there are no guarantees with coat type, a responsible breeder will give you time to interact with your puppy and see if you are allergic, allowing you time to return the pup if it is not working out. If you are allergic to dog saliva, and your skin breaks out in hives when licked by a dog, you will most likely be allergic to all goldendoodles regardless of coat type. If you still want a dog, I would suggest a tiny goldendoodle as they produce less saliva. Since most goldendoodles shed very little, if at all, they need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting, and must be clipped every few months. Size Depending on the parents and their genetics, you can find goldendoodles in a wide range of sizes. Females are usually smaller than males. A Standard Goldendoodle results from crossing a standard poodle with a golden retriever. They will generally be 50 lbs. Most standards are in the 70 to 90 lb. A Mini Goldendoodle results from crossing a miniature poodle with a golden retriever. They generally range from 25 to 49 lbs. A Tiny Goldendoodle results from crossing a toy poodle with a mini goldendoodle. They range from 10 to 24 lbs and are about 12 to 17 inches at the shoulder. In terms of temperament, mini and tiny goldendoodles may have a slightly higher energy level than the standard. Since we use calm poodles in our breeding program, we tend to produce docile goldendoodles, regardless of size. Generations F1 is a first generation cross in which the puppy is 50 percent golden retriever and 50 percent poodle. The F1 cross is considered the healthiest, as the parents are unlikely to contribute genes for common inheritable diseases. F1b is a backcross in which a goldendoodle is bred with a poodle. The puppy is 25 percent golden and 75 percent poodle. F1b puppies are the most likely to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly. Some breeders have backcrossed a goldendoodle with a golden, which results in a dog with more of the golden retriever traits. I prefer not to breed this backcross as there is a greater likelihood of shedding. F2 is a second generation cross in which an F1 goldendoodle is crossed with another F1 goldendoodle. If this is done for seven generations, a breeder could apply to register this dog as a purebred. The closer the generations come together, the more consistency there will be in the lines, but the genetic problems of the purebreds are more likely to reappear, and hybrid vigor diminishes. Some F2 puppies may have an improper coat instead of the fleecy softness we love in the doodles. While goldendoodles vary in appearance and coat type, an experienced breeder will be able to give you an idea of what the pup will look like as an adult, based on what the parents have produced in the past and what traits they see in the pup. Health and Lifespan I have been breeding goldendoodles since and have found them to be healthy dogs with few health concerns. My dogs live an average of 10 to 16 years — a standard will typically have a shorter lifespan than a tiny. While goldendoodles tend to be healthier than their parent breeds, they can still be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye problems. Skin conditions, such as hot spots and allergies, are also seen in this mix, and like many other breeds, they may get cancer. Genetic testing can reduce the risk of many diseases. A reputable breeder will perform various tests and provide evidence of the successful results. This investment is usually reflected in the higher cost of the puppy for the buyer. A higher upfront cost will most likely reduce vet bills down the road. Goldendoodle Mismatch I believe the goldendoodle is a suitable dog for most people, with a few caveats: A low- to non-shedding coat means more time, effort, and money spent on grooming. Make sure you have plenty of time in your schedule to raise and train a new puppy. The hard work pays off in the end. Expect an older Pug dog to take more naps and retreat more often due to a lower tolerance for noise levels. When your dog reaches the age of 8 or 9, it will be time to give a bit more attention to certain grooming techniques. Skin looses its elasticity and cleaning wrinkles will be more important than ever. An older Pug will be more susceptible to infections. Take extra time to clean the folds and keep them dry. Your Pug's veterinarian should be performing more thorough tests, especially for sugar levels. Eye exams are very important, as well. Just as with humans, an older Pug may be more susceptible to developing diabetes, arthritis , have problems with joints and their bones may be more brittle. The pounds that they have been carrying around and the body structure that they have short legs especially have been taking its toll. At this age, excess weight be a problem. It is recommended to make a gradual change in the diet, to ensure that meals have a higher count of nutrients specifically for aging pets. If you previously gave no-so-healthy snacks, make an effort to change over to a solid, healthy meal and snack plan. It will be time to make a change in regard to a vitamin and mineral supplement, switching to a senior formula. Additional supplements can be helpful depending on a Pug's specific needs. Most often, this breed does best with supplements to aid in joint health. Omega 3 can help to keep the skin and coat healthy and combat drying issues. The intensity of exercise should be scaled back a bit for seniors ; though daily duration of activity should remain as normal if the older Pug can handle it. It is still important go for walks so that a dog's heart stays healthy; movement is very necessary. However, once your Pug dog is a senior, you do not want to overdo activities as an older heart will not be able to handle what a younger heart was able to. It is during this time that you want to make the household as quite and peaceful as possible. Unless you absolutely must, do not move your furniture or make any changes that could cause stress or confusion. Creatures of habit, dogs know where things are and it can be disturbing if the environment is changed. The ability to hold elimination may weaken as bladder and bowel muscle loose some strength. At this time, you may want to start using doggie diapers. As odd as they may look, this will help your Pug and your home stay sanitary. If your senior does have accidents, never scold or punish. This awkward combination makes natural birth difficult. If the birth is successful, Pugs commonly have litters containing puppies, with 4 pups being the average. The newborn Pugs will often nurse from their mother. When they are not nursing, they will spend the majority of their time sleeping. Newborn Pugs Pug pups begin their life fully reliant on their mother. They are born blind, deaf, and without teeth. A coat should be present, with the color being commonly either fawn or black. As they are still blind and deaf at this stage, they will not bother exploring or moving around more than necessary, spending most of their time lying close to their littermates and mother. Their weight should steadily increase every day. At the end of their first week of life, they should have doubled their birth weight, or at least come close. The owners of the pups will need to keep an eye on their breathing as brachycephalic breeds, such as the Pug, commonly have breathing issues. Two Week Old Baby Pug As we hit two weeks of age, we see a key development in the puppies growth; their eyes will open for the very first time! To begin with, their eye color will be blue, but will likely transition into a dark brown as they mature. Owners need to check over their eyes to ensure there are no issues, as this breed can be susceptible to ocular problems. At this stage, they may be a little more curious about their surroundings due to their newfound eyesight. However, they will still primarily be focused on sleeping and nursing. Their weight should continue to rise steadily over the coming weeks. By this time, the ears of the baby Pug pups will have opened. They will be able to hear for the first time and will begin reacting to more sounds. Their eyesight will also have developed significantly, with them being able to recognize their mother, littermates, and objects placed in their den. Along with their newfound perception of the world, they should now be able to support their own body weight and stand up. They may be able to walk, albeit with an unsteady gait. With all the interesting sights and sounds around them, they will likely be a lot more inquisitive of their surroundings. They may explore the den as much as their wobbly legs will carry them. The Pug puppies will also start teething, with their baby teeth coming through for the first time. This may start a passing interest in solid food. Gaining Independence On top of all this, they should now be able to urinate and defecate on their own, without any stimulation from their mother. We can also expect to see the start of the early socialization period. The puppies will begin developing behaviors and social skills for the first time, taking part in play with their littermates. Owners of the puppies should take advantage of this period to help them get used to human touch and presence. They will be establishing relationships with their mother, den mates, and people. Training can begin at this early stage. Despite the fact that their brains still have a lot of developing to do, a start can still be made on teaching them basic crate and potty training. They will also likely be much more mobile on their feet. Little adventures will be common and the puppies will play together often. Soft, easy to eat puppy food can be given. They will continue to rise in weight and keep learning social skills, with more complex behaviors being shown. While they seem a lot more independent at this stage, they will still require plenty of time with their mother and den mates before they are ready to be moved to a new home. Six Week Old Baby Pug At six weeks old, the Pug puppies are fast approaching the age where they reach full independence. By now, they should be fully weaned off their mother and placed onto solid food only. This is a big step. There is still much to learn. Up until now, the Pug puppies have been very curious and interested in completely new things. But they have always been safe under the watchful eye of their mom, too. Now, as they finally gain independence, the puppies learn to be cautious and careful; traits that keep them alive in the wild. Eight Week Old Baby Pug At eight weeks old, the Pug pups are developed enough to be able to leave their mother and littermates behind. They can be sold and moved into a new loving home. They should weigh around pounds. Training and Raising a Pug Resources Keep in mind that they still have a lot of developing to do; both physically and mentally! Today we will discuss about Pug puppy development stages! To know why this happens, you need to understand each stage of development that your pup goes through to become an adult. In this stage, your Pug pup will first open his eyes, and begin to respond to light and movements and sounds around him. At this stage, he will begin to move around a little, adjusting to the earth beneath his feet and crawling in his box. He will begin to recognize his mother and his siblings and any objects you place in his box. He will be alert and sensitive to his environment and begin to recognize you and your family. This is a crucial stage in his growth as now he learns all it takes to be a dog, so let him be with his mother and siblings. He will learn now to interact with his littermates and play and how to overcome his bite inhibition. In addition, he will learn to be disciplined while his mother weans him and teaches him dog manners, as also that she is the leader of the pack. At this stage, you can safely introduce him to food at the same time as the mother is weaning him. While his mother does her bit by her Pug puppies, you should not give up handling your pup every day, at least for 10 minutes at a time. It is best to leave newborns with their mother until seven weeks of age if not longer so that they are better socially developed. According to canine experts, the best time a pup can learn social skills is when he is between three and 16 weeks of age because anything he learns now contributes to making him a well-adjusted dog. So, leave him with his mother and siblings now for as long as possible. This is not the appropriate time for disciplining him if he is play-fighting or has housebreaking mistakes because this is a normal step in his growth. No harsh talk or loud voices either or even traumatic events. If you like, you could now begin to teach him simple commands such as come, sit, stay and down. Accustom him to using a leash now and take care not to keep him away from the rest of your family, as he must continue to learn social etiquette and behaviour that he will need for the rest of his life. At this stage, he will appear to be just a little more independent and might even start ignoring all the commands you taught him only recently. Take care, however, as he might just bite you or nip you in an attempt to challenge your power over him. He may interpret the former game as a sign of dominance, especially if he wins while with wrestling, things can get completely out of control. As your puppy grows in strength, he will want to play games of strength, perhaps even with you. He will no longer be keen to please you and will display cheeky behaviour. He will now begin teething and will search for things to chew on if only to relieve the pain and pressure. To help him through this period, give him frozen doggie bones. He may try to bully over other members of your family, especially children. If you shout out to him to come over to you, at this stage he will choose to ignore you. This can be a dangerous situation, because if he does this in a public place and runs away from you, he may meet with an accident and injure himself badly and even die. At this stage, he will also go through all the hormonal changes a teenage boy or girl would. He will now be sexually ready and may display a rebellious streak. This is the right time to have him neutered or spayed if you have a female. Though he is not seasoned and experienced in the ways of the dog world, you still need to treat him as you would an adult son or daughter. Be realistic about him and give him his freedom. You can do this by increasing the scope of his activities and his training. Give him advanced training sessions, if you choose, such as herding or agility training. They come in all sorts of colors due to the poodle genetics in both parents. We cross a miniature F1 Bernedoodle with a toy poodle. This combination allows us to get the wonderful, husky structure of the Bernese Mountain Dog in a shrunk down, cuddly package. Some of my apricot Bernedoodles have amazed me on the quality of curl, thickness of coat and broadness across the back as they keep the adorable teddy-bear structure that we all love. They are similar to a Goldendoodle in color, but offer a husky-ness that is not found in the Goldendoodle. We see wideness across the back in the skeletal structure which is gorgeous. They tend to be short in body verses long-bodied. This gives them a stack that really shows off their figures. It's truly a teddy-bear, lap dog! You will fall in love with the many colors and the varying hues of the copper that the petites come in. In addition, their temperaments are a bundle of joy and excitement, making for a perfect family pet for young children and the elderly. They keep the air of innocence, the strong sense of loyalty and sensitivity of the Bernese Mountain Dog. They differ in that they can sometimes be a little quicker on their feet in agility compared to the larger sizes. Petites are really starting to trend and are a favorite choice for many. They are cuter than the dickens! We are extremely proud that we are among the first to be rolling out chocolates, dark red, red abstract, apricots, tricolor, and tri parti-phantoms! Little to zero shedding equals a higher maintenance dog. The Tiny Bernedoodle is a relatively easy keeper in the grooming department compared with the Miniature Poodle. The curlier the coat the more they need groomed. Most Micor Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least 3 times a week and need a cut or trim every weeks. When brushing focus on areas that easily matt like behind the ears and the belly. You can see our favorite brush in our shopping list here. When people think of a Mini dog they usually picture something the size of a Mini Poodle or something the size of a Cavalier. When Bernedoodle breeders talk about a Mini Bernedoodle you need to keep in mind that Mini compared to a pound Bernese can still be over 50 pounds with some Mini Bernedoodles getting as large as 65 pounds. This is because each inherits separate genes from each parent. Some puppies get more of the Bernese genes and some get the Mini Poodle genes. Becase of the request we often get for a dog that will stay under 50 pounds or for a dog that will stay around 20 pounds we decided to add Tiny Bernedoodles to our Bernedoodle program. Tiny Bernedoodles are consistently smaller than F1 Mini Bernedoodles. Tiny Bernedoodles are great for families that live in an apartment or a small area. Tiny Bernedoodles are a great option for a family with allergies, a family looking for a smaller dog with the Bernese temperament, or a family just looking for a unique great dog to have as a companion. The Tiny Bernedoodle is a moderately active dog who requires around 20 to 30 minutes of daily exercise. They adapt quickly to most hot and cold weather climates, making them an excellent all-weather dog selection. This crossbreed is excitable but will match their energy level to yours, so plan on snuggling on the couch together or playing fetch in the back yard. Tiny Bernedoodles are lap dogs so plan on your Tiny Bernedoodle puppy spending long hours hanging out on your lap. Are Tiny Bernedoodles good with young children?
