He did have some qualities that I thought were different from the many Labs I raised over the years, but I would not consider it outside the norm for a Labrador Retriever. Different Types Of White Labradors On the most basic level, white Labradors are Labradors that have a coat that is white, or almost white, in color. But their coat takes on this unusual pigment for a Labrador for a number of different reasons. These dogs are the same as all other Labs; it is just that both of their parents had the right genes to give them a coat that approaches white. They will have the same black or brown nose and eyes as other Labs, as well as the same intelligence and temperament. They will also face the same health risks, but no additional ones due to the color of their coat. Yellow Labradors come in a range of colors, from fox red, to golden, to cream, and of course, white. White is just another natural variation within the spectrum. White Labrador dogs are usually specifically created by breeders, who have been broadening the color range of Yellow Labradors for decades in order to widen their market. White Labradors are more likely to be English Labradors than American Labradors because of the history of the breeding. This means they will also have the stockier, broader look of the English Lab. Albino Labradors Unlike Yellow Labradors with a white coat, which are healthy dogs that do not differ from their darker colored brothers and sisters, some White Labradors are the result of albinism. This is a genetic condition universal throughout the animal kingdom, but rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20, The result is a pooch that has white hair and extremely pale skin. They are usually easily distinguishable from Yellow Labs that are white as they will also lack pigment in their eyes and nose. They are very susceptible to sun damage, which can easily result in tumors and skin cancer. Their eyes are also very sensitive to the sun and can easily become damaged. To find a White Labrador, you will need to speak with a breeder that has chosen color as one of the traits for which they are controlling. However, it is not advisable to work with a breeder who is only or primarily controlling for color, as health and temperament are still more important features in a dog than color. Bear in mind that English Labs look different; they tend to be stockier and broader in the chest and face. They also have different personalities. They tend to be more playful and silly, but have less energy. They have become very popular dogs on the show circuit, while their silly and friendly personality makes them great family pets. It can be difficult to tell if a Lab will grow to be a true White Lab when they are a puppy, as lots of Yellow Labradors are born with a very pale coat, which gets darker as they age. Even if you love white Labradors, remember that the most important thing about a puppy is their personality and their health. As with any puppy search, the way to find a white Lab puppy is to look for a litter of Labradors bred in a way that is appropriate for the breed. White Labrador Retriever Breeders If white Lab puppies appeal to you, then make sure that the breeder has not focused on color to the detriment of health or temperament. Color should always be a secondary consideration when breeding a litter or choosing your puppy. First make sure that all of the other boxes are ticked, and that you are happy with your breeder. Make sure both parents are fully health tested. For Labradors this will mean low hip and elbow scores, and clear eye tests as a minimum. Think of the Type of Labrador If you want a pup to show in the ring, then go to an established show breeder who will be able to help you select the best pup for your purpose. If you are looking for a family pet, make sure both parents are treasured members of the family too. When buying any Labrador puppy, making sure the breeder is a good breeder is key. A white Lab puppy is a yellow Lab puppy with an exceptionally pale coat. Ultra pale coats are usually most associated with English breeding lines, which means they are likely to have distinctive personalities too. This white Lab pup has a sweet and sociable nature which is typical of the Labrador breed. Do white Labrador Retriever puppies exist? White is not an officially recognized standard color for Labrador Retrievers. So clearly puppies exist which breeders feel confident describing as white Labs. And prospective owners agree enough to part with some pretty large sums of cash. But what is actually being sold? The answer is very pale yellow Labrador puppies. Yellow is one of the three standard colors for Labrador Retrievers. Their fur color is caused by low concentrations of a reddish pigment called pheomelanin in their fur. Some make a lot, and their fur is a rich fox red color. Others produce so little that they can even be described as white. This variation is a natural and accepted part of the Labrador breed. Champagne white Lab pups — dilute yellow coats Another way a yellow Lab can have an exceptionally pale coat is if they inherit the color dilution gene from their parents. Puppies who inherit the color dilution gene from both parents have their ability to make coat pigments suppressed. Yellow Labs with color dilution are known as champagne Labs, but their exact color depends upon how much pheomelanin they would have produced otherwise. Dilute fox red coats are still darker than dilute golden yellow coats, and so on. Color dilution has a controversial status in the Labrador breed. Other breeders insist that it must have been introduced later — probably by crossing Labs with Weimaraners. Non-dilute yellow coats can also be so pale they appear as white. Is a white Lab puppy albino? Albinism is the complete inability to make any pigment at all, anywhere in the body. This means albino dogs have white fur, and pink eyes, nose, eye rims, lips and paw pads. Albinism is unheard of in Labradors, and white Labradors usually have a black nose, eye rims, lips and paw pads. When you meet a litter of fluffy white Lab puppies, can you be sure they will stay white all the way into adulthood? Alas, not really. Labradors are born with a puppy coat which is softer and finer than their adult coat. Their adult coat starts to come through from about 6 months of age. This change in texture can make the color catch the light differently too. Realistically, most white Labs do have some subtle shading in their coat, like Banjo above, and the gorgeous puppy in our pictures. What will an adult white Labrador puppy look like? Very pale yellow coats are most associated with English Labrador breeding lines. Also known as show or bench-type Labs, these dogs are bred to match as closely as possible the physical ideal for Labrador Retrievers, as described by their breed standard. By contrast, American Labs also known as working or field-type are breeding lines noted for their working ability. English Labs tend to be fractionally shorter and heavier than American Labs, which means they look broader and more heavy set too. Do white Lab puppies have special temperaments? Like all Labs, a white Lab puppy is likely to be energetic, people-focussed, and love physical activity. At the time of writing, there is no evidence that having a white coat is directly responsible for any specific personality traits in Labradors. But, being of English type which they are likely to be does have a well-recognized effect on their personality. Specifically, working ability is not a priority for English type Lab breeders. But patience and tolerance for spending long days in convention centers, awaiting their moment on the show bench, is. So, English Labs tend to be slightly less demanding in terms of how much mental stimulation they need, and a bit more laid back. English Labs also achieve slightly lower scores for trainability in behavior studies. But they are still extremely intelligent — the difference is only likely to be significant for Lab owners aspiring to take part in competitive field trials at a high level. Are white Labrador puppies healthy? White Labrador puppy health is comparable to yellow Lab health. They usually live for between 10 and 14 years. Their overall average life expectancy is 12 years, and most long lived dogs reach about 16 years old. This is comparable to black Labs, and slightly higher than for chocolate Labs. Over the course of their lifetime, Labradors are most likely to need veterinary treatment for: Hip dysplasia. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. The Earliest Records of White Labrador Retrievers in History Labradors have been around since the breed began being developed in Newfoundland in the 16th century. Although the coat is beautiful, it can be difficult to achieve by accident, so it took many years of selective breeding to establish lines of white Labs. There are only a few breeders who are breeding for this color, and even fewer of them are responsible breeders who practice good breeding practices with health-tested dogs. They are considered to be a pale yellow coloration, not a true white. In most cases, white Labs have yellow or cream coloration around the face and ears. They should have pigment in their eyes and noses, though, much like yellow Labs do. While the white color falls under the yellow color umbrella, it is entirely different from albinism. Albino dogs lack pigment, even in the eyes and nose, and they are not accepted under the breed standard of Labradors. White labs are essentially dilute yellow Labs. In fact, many of them will take on yellow or cream coloration, especially after spending a lot of time in the sun. White is more common in English Labs than in American Labs Although they are the same breed, English Labs are typically considered to be more show worthy, while American Labs are prized as working dogs. English Labs tend to be stockier but lighter than their taller, heavier American counterparts. White coloration in Labs comes from a recessive gene Both parents of a white Lab must have the genes that allow for white coloration to occur. Their coat is the same type as other Lab colors Although their colors differ, white Labs still have the short double coat that other Labs have. This means they tend to be big shedders, with some anecdotal evidence that white Labs may shed a little more than other colors do. White puppies may not stay white Often, puppies are lighter at birth than they will be once they start growing. Labradors as a whole are a fantastic dog breed, which is easily proven by how popular this breed has remained for decades. These are intelligent and personable dogs known for their love of people and gentle nature. They tend to be good with children, and many people prize Labs for hunting and retrieving purposes. White Labs are just as athletic and healthy as their yellow, black, and chocolate counterparts. Even still, they are highly prized, even within the show world. They retain the desirable traits of other Labrador colors, like excellent temperament, intelligence, and trainability, but there are no known medical conditions associated with the white color. This means that your white Lab should be just as healthy as the other acceptable colors within the breed. They are athletic dogs that sport a beautiful double coat, making them appropriate for a variety of activities in a variety of environments. A white Labrador is a yellow Lab whose fur is so pale it appears white, or almost white. Their fur may not be entirely white, and could have darker accents. White Labradors should have the same general temperament and health as any other color Labrador. Do you think the white Labrador is a beautiful dog that could be a good companion for you? There are things you will want to know, though. Is this dog an albino Labrador? They will have dark eyes and noses and a distinctive white fur. The fur may not be completely white, though. Often the fur features accents of cream or yellow, especially at the ears. A white Labrador is not a separate Lab breed. Labrador Retriever History Labrador Retrievers are a popular dog breed whose ancestors started out as fishing dogs in Newfoundland. They retrieved ducks for their owners. There are actually no indigenous dogs in Newfoudland. These Canadian duck dogs probably originated from English water dog breeds. Eventually, British breeders discovered them as they were imported back to England. The second Earl of Malmesbury and his son called them Labrador dogs. Original Labrador Colors Originally, Labs were predominantly black. Black is one of three colors that naturally shows up in Labrador puppies. Black, yellow, and brown are the others. Of course, within those three colors, there are many shades. The white Labrador is one of them! But there are others, like the silver Lab! Albinos lack all pigment. Albino dogs have red eyes and noses, whereas white Labrador Retrievers have dark pigment in those areas. Each dog gets two alleles to create its appearance. What Else do These Genes Control? For example, in yellow Labs, other pigmentation can occur on the nose, lips, gums, feet, tail, and eye rims. Separate genes also control the intensity of the black color on the nose. This is independent of that which governs the fur. In some Labs, the black color of the nose actually fades over time. Sometimes, a yellow Labrador will have no pigment in the nose, eye rims, and feet. They look pink! These dogs are called Dudley Labs. How to get White Labradors Two yellow Labradors, if mated, will always have yellow puppies. Otherwise, the dog would not be yellow. So, a white Labrador will be the result of two yellow Labradors being bred together. Shades of yellow range all the way from light cream to a fox red, which is the darkest one you can get on a Lab. Health of the White Labrador Retriever Labradors are generally fairly healthy dogs. But, they can be predisposed to a variety of inherited conditions. White Labradors, unless they are true albinos, should have the same health prospects as any Labrador Retriever. Albinos suffer from additional health problems, including a higher risk of cancer and visual defects. General Labrador Health and Lifespan Labradors generally live years. Their general health is affected by exercise, environment, and diet, so the care you give them is important. Labs are prone to obesity.
