Can German Shepherds be all tan? October 19, by George Tan refers to German Shepherds that are tan in combination with another color. This can be black and tan, liver, and tan, blue and tan, and isabella and tan. The tan parts are due to a slightly lightened red pheomelanin pigment giving it a brownish-red appearance due to the activities of the intensity gene. This intensity gene reduces the concentration of the red piments by causing less pigment to be produced. As such, parts of the coat that should have had a rich mahogany red color appear red. No German Shepherds seem to be all tan. The red pigment would then need to be slightly diluted to appear pale red otherwise known as tan. None of them have a pure red or tan coat. This is because the red and intensity genes which are inherited together haplotype cause all German Shepherds that should have been otherwise red to be cream to off-white in shade. All cream to white GSDs has two copies of the recessive red and intensity genes. The intensity genes cause extensive dilution of all red pigment to very diluted shades. With that said, a lot is yet to be discovered about recessive red German Shepherds and how various genes interact to cause variations from blonde to almost white. But for all tan German Shepherds, none seem to exist as explained above. Tan GSDs are a combination of tan and another darker color such as black, liver, blue, or lilac on sections of the coat. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to leave them in the comment section below. There you go, WOOF! Written By: George As a dog lover, George understands how they behave and how to best take care of them. He is also well versed with various dog breeds and loves writing about them. Black and Tan This is the color most of us think of when we picture a German Shepherd dog. With a rich tan undercarriage and a black face and back, this color of GSD has been around since the very first was officially registered back in Germany at the end of the 19th century. Although Horand von Grafrath was a little darker than the modern black and tan GSD, the ancestry is evident. With their luxurious white coats, these pale dogs look more like Golden Retrievers with erect ears. Despite their popularity, like the white German Shepherd, the blue has been a cause of controversion in the Shepherd world because recessive dilution gene comes with inbreeding practices and health issues. Blue German Shepherds may appear gray or even silver and are sometimes mistaken for a Blue Belgian Malinois. Isabella This unusual coat color variation is another washout as far the AKC is concerned, which is a shame given how striking it is. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. However, silver German Shepherds are often seen in military work or the police force. The red color is the result of the color gene pheomelanin. It can have any shade of red, ranging from strawberry blonde to a deep mahogany red. Alongside black and tan, the black and red combination is preferred over others by German Shepherd breeders. As black and red are both produced by dominant genes, this color combination is easier to breed for, and many breeders focus on producing purebred dogs with deep red coloring. Sable A classic color for the German Shepherd, a sable comes in a variety of colors but each hair sports a black tip. Sable GSDs can be black, gray, red, silver, or tan and are also known as agouti. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. What is the Rarest Color of the German Shepherd? The rarest color of German Shepherd is the isabella due to the recessive combination of liver and blue. You will have to search for a long time to get such a puppy — and his price will likely be high as well! What is the Best Color for a German Shepherd? The best color for a German Shepherd in the show ring is black and tan, followed by sable. If you are not planning on showing your dog through the AKC, you can pick any color you like. This is not based on any actual working abilities though and more of a myth that has been passed on through generations. What is the Original Color of a German Shepherd? As German Shepherd dogs were bred as working dogs, the original breeders focused on temperature rather than appearance. The original color of working German Shepherds was sable. The most traditional color in the show ring is black and tan. While you should pick the coloring you like the most, make sure to not just choose your dog based on his looks. German Shepherds are prone to developing back and hip issues. Before buying a puppy for his color, make sure that his breeder selects for health first and color second! Otherwise you might end up with a puppy with great color but poor health … which is never a good thing. Unleash the real potential of your companion! All About the Black Goldendoodle The black Goldendoodle is an increasingly popular pet that combines the best of both the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. This lovable hybrid combines the outgoing personality of the Golden Retriever with the intelligence and hypoallergenic qualities of a Poodle — making it a great choice for those suffering from pet allergies or who are looking for an easy-to-train companion. Additionally, these pups have a strong work ethic and learn quickly when given consistent training. This makes them easy to train and forms a strong bond between the dog and the owner. On top of that, they tend to have excellent health when you get them from a responsible breeder, giving them greater potential longevity than purebred dogs. All in all, the black Goldendoodle is an exceptionally versatile breed with many positive traits that make it an ideal pet for any household. What Makes a Goldendoodle Black? A Goldendoodle can be black if its genetic makeup consists of a single copy of the recessive black coat color gene. In the case of a Goldendoodle, the poodle must pass down their respective recessive genes in order to produce puppies with black coats. If either of the parents does not have the correct genes, then no puppies with a black coat will be produced. This is why second-generation doodles often produce more black puppies than first-generation doodles ; both parents need to possess the gene in order for it to be successfully passed on to their offspring. Goldendoodle Breed Standard Since they were first bred in the s, it has been a common misconception that the Goldendoodle does not have a breed standard because they are a crossbreed. However, the breed standard for a black Goldendoodle was established by the Goldendoodle Association of North America GANA a few years ago thanks to the rise in their popularity. The standard covers all sizes of Goldendoodle and includes multiple coat colors , which include Black, Chocolate , Red , Apricot and Cream. Are Black Goldendoodles Rare? Yes, they are indeed rare. While Goldendoodles of different colors can be seen in abundance at pet stores, the black variety is much more uncommon. The rarity of black Goldendoodles is due to the fact that the genetic combination it takes to produce this color is quite complicated. This makes it difficult for breeders to produce them on a regular basis, so only a few breeders specialize in breeding black pups. Do Black Goldendoodles Shed? The answer is yes. Generally speaking, black Goldendoodles tend to shed considerably less than double-coated dog breeds such as German Shepherds or Labradors. While it is impossible to guarantee that a certain coat type will not shed at all, many owners of black Goldendoodles find that their coats don't cause any significant issues with shedding. However, since all dogs vary from one another, it can be an excellent idea to spend some time around other Doodles if you require a hypoallergenic pet. This will enable you to make sure that the particular pet doesn't cause any allergic reactions. Are Black Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? Yes, a black Goldendoodle is considered hypoallergenic thanks to its Poodle genetics. Black Goldendoodles are often referred to as hypoallergenic because they shed less and produce less dander, making them less likely to cause an allergic reaction. What triggers a reaction is the proteins found in their saliva, urine, and skin cells. These proteins become airborne when a dog licks itself or shakes its fur and can then be inhaled by humans, triggering an allergic reaction such as a runny nose, itchy eyes, or difficulty breathing. Black Goldendoodles have been bred with this knowledge to reduce the amount of dander they produce as well as their overall shedding rate, so they produce fewer of these proteins and are therefore less likely to cause an allergic reaction in individuals with allergies or sensitivities. Although no breed of dog can technically be considered completely hypoallergenic, black Goldendoodles come close in comparison to other shedding breeds. Does a Black Goldendoodle have a good temperament? Yes, a black Goldendoodle is known for having a good temperament. They are also highly intelligent and eager to please their owners, making them an excellent choice for families. As well as, typically well-mannered and gentle with children. As a mixed breed doodle, they can inherit the best traits of both parent breeds - the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle - which makes them an even more desirable pet. Black Goldendoodles have a reputation for being loyal and devoted companions. Overall, this makes them excellent pets for individuals or families who want a loving and affectionate companion that is easy to care for. The black Goldendoodle comes in the same range of sizes as any other Goldendoodle. Petite Goldendoodles typically reach a height of up to 14 inches and weigh 25 pounds or less. Miniature Goldendoodles can reach heights between 14 inches and 17 inches 35cm to 42cm at the withers and usually weigh between pounds. Medium Goldendoodles range from 17 inches to 21 inches 43cm to 52cm at the withers and tip the scales at pounds. Standard Goldendoodles are over 21 inches tall 53cm to 63cm at the withers, often weighing 51 pounds or more. Each of these sizes has its own unique traits, which means that owners are able to pick one that suits their lifestyle best. Owners should consider not only the puppy's current weight but also its potential growth rate when determining the right size for them. Do Black Goldendoodles have Health Issues? Yes, black Goldendoodles can have health issues. As a hybrid breed, they are prone to certain common health conditions inherited from both the Poodle and Golden Retriever. These can include: Ear infections and Cochleosaccular deafness Sebaceous adenitis skin disease. Bean Licorice Looking for popular black Goldendoodle names? The Poodle side of the family can lead to a slightly more mellow dog, which can be great for some families. If you live in an apartment, this is also a really ideal dog breed for your needs. These dogs do very well in small living spaces and never knock things over or run around and damage things. Poodles are well-known for being ideal for living situations where there is no backyard or area for daily exercise that is convenient to access. This breed will also be happy to live in a small home with a daily walk or a trip to the dog park. The different coat patterns can impact the appearance of the coat as well. If you have a dog with the straight version of the coat, it might look more like a Golden Retriever than a Goldendoodle. Black Goldendoodles with a curly coat might appear slightly more like regular Poodles. Overall, this is a very beautiful dog and one that you will get lots of compliments on when you are out and about. The medium-sized dog is often the most popular dog size because this kind of pet can fit into almost any size home and can be easier to care for with regard to feeding and things like walking and exercising. This coloration often requires that the dog that you are getting is a second or third-generation dog as well. This means that your pet might look like one or the other of its parents much more strongly than a Goldendoodle that is many generations farther away from the original two dog breeds. You might want to look for this dog breed for your family if you value getting a dog that looks like a Golden Retriever or a Poodle and less like a crossbred dog. F1b black Goldendoodle 6-month-old 34lbs There are actually three sizes of Black Goldendoodle. There are miniatures that will only weigh in at about 15 to 30 pounds, and large standard dogs that can weigh as much as pounds. These are not as commonly bred, however, and the medium-sized dog is the most common one that breeders will try to aim for when creating litters. The medium Black Goldendoodle will be about 45 to 60 pounds and stand about 20 to 24 inches tall. This is a nicely sized dog for families and this size dog will not be so big that your kids will be scared to play with it, but not so little that you will need to carry your pet with you everywhere that you go. The Black Goldendoodle is often built much like regular Goldendoodles as well, so you can expect a nice blend of the body type of the Golden Retriever and the Black Poodle. Black Goldendoodle Lifespan This breed lives for about ten to fifteen years. This is much longer than the average Golden Retriever and is more in keeping with the Poodle side of the pedigree. This is one of the benefits of getting a dog that is not purebred and you can avoid the heartbreak of a dog that does not live to be very old when you choose a mixed breed. There are some common health concerns that can impact the lifespan of your Black Goldendoodle, however, which will be discussed in another section. Hybrid dogs can be healthier overall, but there are always outliers in any dog breed. You will need to be aware that many animals that are young will not suffer from any health issues at all. There are always unfortunate situations that could arise with any breed that you select, so you need to be aware that the lifespan of any breed is only an estimate. Your dog could live longer than the normal lifespan or for fewer years. These dogs love to learn tricks and are always happy to play fetch or play with the other pets in their homes. They are also very good at working on hard tasks without getting frustrated. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers are very intelligent , which means that your Black Goldendoodle will be very good at learning new skills and tricks with ease. Many people love that the Black Goldendoodle is so trainable, even if they are not planning to compete or to show their dog. You can teach your Black Goldendoodle all the rules of your home very easily because they are so biddable and they will be happy and eager to make the most of each training session. Training a Black Goldendoodle is really easy and very enjoyable. You will be able to teach them to do all kinds of fun things and they will love working with their family and owners every day. Training any dog needs to be done with patience and positive reinforcement. You will need to use the same techniques when training your Black Goldendoodle as you would with any other breed. Your Black Goldendoodle will thrive under this kind of training method and you will have a great time working with them on any skill that you want them to learn. These are common issues that can come from both sides of the pedigree and both the parent breeds. Hybrid dogs are often less prone to health problems, but you do need to be aware of the common health risks that come from two-parent pedigrees. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is the most common health problem that a Black Goldendoodle might suffer from and it can lead to lifelong struggles for some animals with joint stability and pain. Being aware of the commonality of this health problem is important when you are shopping for a Black Goldendoodle. You can prevent some of the more difficult problems that plague pets with hip dysplasia by keeping your dog from jumping up and down onto furniture and into and out of the car. Patellar Luxation This condition happens when the kneecap moves out of the right place. This issue requires surgery to correct, and it can be found in all Goldendoodle dogs. This can be treated with diet management and grooming routines. These eye conditions might be present in your Black Goldendoodle as well. You can treat many of these conditions, but some of them are progressive and will worsen over time. Grooming Needs of the Black Goldendoodle The grooming needs of your Black Goldendoodle will depend entirely upon the coat pattern that you select. Even if you have a dog with a straight coat pattern, you will still want to be sure that your dog gets groomed by a professional groomer at least twice a year. For dogs with curly coats, grooming might be needed quarterly or even more often. Make sure that you invest in the right grooming supplies and bath products as well for any homecare that you provide for your pet. When you allow mats to form, your dog might end up with hotspots and other painful skin conditions. Grooming a Goldendoodle requires that you commit to a schedule of care and that you stick to this plan. Deviating from the regular grooming plans that you have in place for your dog can lead to health issues and painful skin problems that you will want to avoid. The coat care portion of the commitment to a Goldendoodle cannot be avoided and you will need to plan to offer your dog this attention if you get a Black Goldendoodle. Black Goldendoodles will often shed twice a year as the seasons change. There will not be as much shedding during the other times of the year and you might not see much in the way of pet hair in your home when you are caring for this dog breed. This is one of the key benefits of this breed for you and your family. Being able to trust that your dog will not shed all year around can be really nice and you will probably really appreciate being able to pet your dog without fear of having to remove handfuls of hair each time you pet them. There are some breeds that seem to be shedding non-stop all year round, but the Black Goldendoodle is not one of these breeds. This can make it much easier to keep up on grooming and much more straightforward for those who want to have a professional do all the grooming for their dog. No Goldendoodle dog is AKC-recognized. The AKC might eventually recognize this breed, but at this time it is not one that you can register with this organization. There are other organizations and breed organizations that you can join to show or compete with your Black Goldendoodle, however. You do not need an AKC registration for your dog to be able to have a great pet that you love and that brings joy to your life. You might need an AKC registration for a variety of different dog showing or competition-based experiences, but most people are not looking for a Black Goldendoodle to take to dog shows. How Much Are Black Goldendoodles? The Black Goldendoodle is very popular and there are fewer dogs with this coat pattern than the more common Goldendoodle colors. You might also need to figure out the cost to have your dog delivered to you as there are not many breeders across the country who create a litter of this kind. You might have to plan to drive to go pick up your dog as well. While less common than other coat colors in the Goldendoodle breed, this is still a part-bred dog and one that cannot be AKC registered. This is often a sales tactic and can be a sign that the breeder that you are working with is not scrupulous. Feeding the Black Goldendoodle The Black Goldendoodle will need to be fed in much the same way as any Goldendoodle dog. You should always feed top-quality dog kibble and make sure that your pet is not being exposed to large quantities of grain in their food source. Feeding raw can be an option as well, but you will need to source this kind of dog food just as carefully as you would source the kibble that you feed to your pet. Poodles can have sensitive stomachs, so you will want to avoid lots of treats or wet dog food from a can as well. Most dogs do best when fed a quality kibble and no more than the occasional treat here and there. If you are not sure what to feed your Black Goldendoodle, you can talk to your vet about the various food options that are ideal for this breed. The Black Goldendoodle Can be a Great Companion Animal This is one of the best breeds to select if you have a family and need a dog that will get along with everyone in your family. You will love their sweet and kind personality as well as the unusual color of their coat and their middling size. For the complete list please see our German Shepherd reference guide page. The price for a German Shepherd puppy can vary greatly depending on the breeder. The most important thing is to make sure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Prices for German Shepherd puppies vary for different reasons. If the dog is from show lines, then expect to pay more. For example, if healthy parents can produce a litter of 12 or 13 pups, they may only want to keep the top 3 or 4 to be sold as pets and will not take care of any problems with other pups born in the same litter. Breeders of this type of dog generally have an active presence on social media sites and may be more open to selling their pups online than someone who breeds other types of dogs. Before buying your new puppy you should set up an interview with the breeder. You will want to prepare for this by making a list of questions that you can go over during the interview process. Here are some examples: Will my dog come with full AKC registration? If you are buying a puppy for competition, ask what titles the parents have earned. Are both the mother and father on-site? If not, where are they? How old is your oldest dog that you breed with? What vaccinations will my pup already have done? This is an indication that they are taking care of their animals even after selling them. Ask how often they worm the pups to prevent parasites. Seeing where the puppies are born and how they are being raised can give you a good indication of whether or not this is a responsible breeder. When buying a German Shepherd puppy, make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. You should be able to see where the puppies are born and meet both parents at least once before making your purchase. The most important thing is to ask lots of questions. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in Montana Most responsible breeders will have no problem giving you references from people who have purchased puppies from them in the past. These references can be a valuable resource in helping to decide if a breeder is right for you. If the breeder balks at this request or seems hesitant to provide references, it is probably best to move on. References will be able to tell you whether or not they have witnessed the breeder interacting kindly with their animals and if they seem to be knowledgeable about dog breeding. If you want a healthy puppy, you need to find a good breeder and let them prove themselves. Good luck! Responsible breeders will be more than happy to put you in touch with people who have purchased puppies from them in the past. References can be a valuable resource in helping to decide if a breeder is right for you. Past customers will be able to give you a firsthand account of their experience with the breeder, from communication to quality of puppies. They can also tell you if the breeder was available for questions and support after purchase. Be sure to ask the following questions: How were your interactions with the breeder? Was the breeder available for questions and support after purchase? Are the puppies healthy and have they had all their shots? Was the breeding program healthy and responsible? What kind of temperament do the puppies have? How much did you pay for your puppy? One of the best ways to judge the quality of a breeder is by their relationship with their veterinarian. A good breeder will have a veterinarian that they work closely with and trust implicitly. The veterinarian will be able to provide a health certificate for each puppy, verifying that they have been vaccinated and are in good health. They will also be able to screen for genetic disorders. If your breeder does not have a good relationship with their veterinarian, it is probably best to move on. Do Your Homework Before you purchase a puppy, do some research on the breed. This will help you determine if the breeder you are considering is responsible and breeding healthy dogs. A responsible breeder will welcome questions and should be able to provide you with references. They should also have a good relationship with their veterinarian. If the breeder you are considering does not meet these criteria, it is probably best to move on. The breeder does not health screen their dogs for genetic disorders. They do not have a good relationship with their veterinarian. They are not willing to provide references. The puppies do not have health certificates or vaccination records. If you see any of these signs, it is probably best to move on. When looking for a German Shepherd Dog Breeder in Montana, be sure to ask the right questions and look for the signs of a responsible breeder. All reputable breeders will screen their dogs for genetic disorders and have a good relationship with their veterinarian. The puppies should also have health certificates and vaccination records. Health problems can be costly and time-consuming to treat. It is best to avoid breeders that do not health screen their dogs. If a breeder balks at this request, it is probably best to move on. Be sure to ask the Montana breeder about the temperament of the puppies. Puppies like to chew and dig, so remove anything that can potentially harm them from your home. Check all of the baseboards and electrical cords in your home for chewing damage. Be sure to provide lots of toys and entertainment for your puppy. Doing so will help keep them busy and prevent them from causing any damage around the house. Another thing you should do before getting a German Shepherd Puppy is set up an appointment with their veterinarian. You will need this information when you purchase their health certificate, which verifies they have been vaccinated and are in good health. There are a few things you can do to make the process easier. Be consistent with your commands. Take your puppy out frequently, especially after meals and naps. Reward them for going potty outside. Use a crate to house train your puppy. It will take some time and patience, but eventually your puppy will learn where to go potty. When bringing home a new German Shepherd Puppy, be sure to prepare your home and set up an appointment with their veterinarian. Also, be prepared to potty train your new puppy. With enough time and effort, they will eventually potty train. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Both of these proven, top working bloodlines have reliably and consistently produced quality working dogs! Very few breeders have these honors, especially in North America. Thank you for taking such care in your program that you can provide such an animal as this one. Rebekkah A lovely young Sapphire Shepherds female with owner, enjoying each other's company on the farm. Nov we take the tracking exam! He's an amazing dog, I am very grateful for you pairing us together. C" A multi generation bred dog from Sapphire Shepherds. This website documents our history of involvement in this beloved breed. We are blessed to have a long history of top representatives of Working German Shepherds grace our lives. Please reach out to Ramona with questions and thank you for your visit! This kennel name was chosen as Ramona grew up in the foothills of the beautiful Sapphire Mountain range in Montana. Sapphire is a gemstone associated with royalty. It is believed to attract abundance, blessings, good fortune and gifts. It has been used to protect against negative energies, bring calmness, strength and spiritual clarity. The below image of Sapphire Shepherds business logo was designed by Ramona. It incorporates her photo of Xurk of Sapphire Mountain, a male who is a work of art inside and out. We are very happy to speak or correspond with you about our German Shepherds via phone, email and allow appointments to view dogs on premises. We are not members of, nor do we post on forums and we are not on social media. Please include a note on the puppy you will be reserving. Thank you! Criteria for price of puppies. When adopting a puppy, please read to avoid mistakes and overpaying. Are the parents of the puppy trained or come from well trained lines? Not every dog is capable of training or competing on international or world levels. Although your intention might not be to go to international levels or advanced training, at least you can train your puppy to go potty in the right spot and basic commands : 3. Are the puppy's parents imported or from imported lines? What does the puppy's ancestry look like? When someone is purchasing a puppy from parents that have been registered with AKC, this does not always mean that the puppy is purebred. However, the puppy shows obvious signs of not being purebred. For example, we have come across 'purebred' GSD's that had blue eyes, wolf necks where the head moves along with the neck, which is an unlike characteristic for a GSD , and other body traits that are not found in the German Shepherd breed. Nonetheless, such people will claim that the dog is purebred and shows AKC papers as proof. Contradictive enough, when registering imported dogs with AKC, they will require pictures of the dog from every angle, ancestry proof, and DNA to confirm the dog is purebred. It would have been nice if AKC would mandate the same standards to backyard breeders. Furthermore, German Shepherds are a highly intelligent breed. The West German line is the calmest and most intelligent of all lines. Here is answer to the most common question about our pricing. Please check a puppy's bloodline before purchasing. All dogs imported from Germany have been tested repeatedly according to the German standards. These dogs go through a series of blood tests, medical exams, health inspections, and such before they are allowed to breed. If a dog has even a minor health concern, they are not allowed to be bred. All of our Imported breeding males and females have gone through all of this to ensure the healthiest possible offsprings. This all is not to convince you to buy from us, there are several good breeders out there, but to help you go with a quality German Shepherd puppy that will make you happy and not discourage you from getting another German shepherd puppy in the future or ruin the reputation of this beautiful breed.
A little about us North Mountain Kennels is proud to offer quality German Shepherd puppies for sale, bred from some of the best sires and dams in the world. From meticulously bred service dogs to family pets, North Mountain Kennels has the perfect German Shepherd puppy for you. About Our Breeder Audrey is not just your average dog trainer. She is highly educated in all things K9. She has obtained 2 Masters Degrees from London Hanover University College of Zoological Studies with a concentration in canine behavior from a neurological perspective. This allows her to learn that what we "see" as the outward behavior and how it begins on a cellular level in brain. Truly understanding at an in-depth level of the animal that many "Trainers" do not understand or have any desire to understand what creates behavior and where it begins in the brain. Knowledge is power and with this knowledge Audrey Estep carefully crafts training plans developed for each puppy in training rather the a cookie cutter approach to all dogs. My services are designed with you and your pet in mind, and I believe in working as much with you as with your pet. Happy Healthy Bloodlines Great genetics make for a confident well rounded puppy that is suitable for companion, sport, IPO, or police K9. However, not all great quality breeding stock are titled European German Shepherd dogs. I'm selecting dogs with a history of producing consistent sound and healthy offspring. Not all dogs in my program have an OFA score on hips and elbows. My dogs generally have a European score on hips and elbows since they are tested prior to import. Articles Goldendoodles are easily one of the most charming doodles on the planet. The lamb cut is one of the most popular styles that will give your pooch a sweet look. There are plenty more Goldendoodle haircuts to choose from, and we got them all for you. Plus, we added some pictures to give you a visual idea of each style and determine which one would look great on your little dood. Then, keep the rest of the length long enough to taper off nicely toward the tip. Clean Face Cut Image from Instagram: britneyrmackgrooming Goldendoodles naturally have thick and wavy facial hair when you let it grow out. So, if you like less hair in that area, a clean face cut works well. You can also combine this with other haircuts you want for your pooch. Bell Bottom cut Image from Instagram: priscilla. The bell bottom cut is just as the term suggests — long, flared fur on the bottom of the legs. To emphasize the bell bottom shape, the upper portion of the legs is cut shorter. Full Shave Image from Instagram: 2kingstonwithlove The full shave is a much shorter version of the kennel cut. The name is not quite appealing, yet it is suitable for dogs that get bad tangles and mats over time. So, if you want to put an end to coat clumping and nasty mat issues, the full shave should be a quick fix. Not only does it let your pooch start a brand new hairstyle once the coat grows back but the full shave is also suitable for the hot and humid weather. The rounded face requires trimming the fur on the head and face at the same length. The Clipped Ears style is great to flaunt those gorgeous floppy ears and keep them nice and neat. For this cut, you will need a clipper comb or blade to trim the ear hair shorter. When all done, this style makes the ears more visible instead of being covered in thick fur. Medium-Length Cut Image from Instagram: stewie. With a medium-length cut, this gives you more styling options for your pooch. The clean feet cut is particularly appealing when combined with shorter Goldendoodle haircuts such as the teddy bear or lamb cut. Give your pooch a clean feet look by completely having the hair around this area. You can also include even the ankle, so it exposes the entire feet and nails. This is a classic look for Poodles, as well as Doodles. Full Ears Image from Instagram: gouda. You can choose not to clip it at all and keep the natural length. But you can also add some variations to the full ears by adding layers, cutting it bluntly or with a rounded edge. Pom Poms Image from Instagram: britneyrmackgrooming Pom poms are a fun look for Goldendoodles, which makes them look like purebred Poodles. You can create the pom pom style by adding some rounded balls right above the clean, shaven feet. Then, you trim the leg hair short to emphasize those cute pom poms. Think of the plume tail cut as a variation of the flag tail, which is a creative style for your pooch. Simply let the hair grow out even up to the base, and this will eventually billow out beautifully. To create the round feet look, simply scissor neatly the fur on the feet. This will make the feet appear fluffy and round, which is exactly what you are shooting for. Be sure that the nails remain concealed in all that fur. Pom Tail Image from Instagram: little. You can even combine this look with the pom pom haircut, Poodle cut, or any other short to medium-length Goldendoodle haircut. You will need to shave the base of the tail for this look. Then, shape the tail into a ball, which will then resemble a pom pom. You want to trim it neatly and with a round shape to blend well into the body and neck. This is an adorable cut that keeps the head nice and fluffy. Then, you can pair it with a clean face and add in some of those colorful clips to finish off the look. Beveled Feet Image from Instagram: kingsleythedoood Another haircut for the feet, the beveled feet gives your pup a neat and tidy appearance. You only need to maintain the hair length on the feet long enough. This way, it will match the length of the leg hair. Then, the feet are kept fluffy and rounded — no nails exposed at all. As you can see in the image above, this cut makes your pooch resemble a lion. The hair on the head and chest are kept long while the body hair is short. Poodle Cut Image from Instagram: lifeofmilliemaedoodle Since your pooch is half Golden Retriever and half Poodle, you might as well try out this charming style for your pet. The poodle cut is all about keeping the hair at varying lengths in different areas. The belly and face are short, while the top of the head, tail, and ears are kept longer, somewhere between 2 to 4 inches. Lastly, the feet hair remains long to complement this style. Mohawk Image from Instagram: leon. Leave the hair long at the top of the head, around 2 to 4 inches. Then, the rest of the body hair is cut short to about an inch. Brush the head hair up until it sticks out… Like a mohawk. Others even put some natural hair dye on the mohawk to emphasize it further. The hair all over the body and head are kept short up to 2 inches. The face is clean while the ears are short. Instead of trimming the leg hair short, you should keep it long to about 4 inches. The goal is to make your pooch look like a lamb — short body hair and long leg hair. The ears are also short and the face is clean. Yes, Goldendoodles can be prone to mats and tangles, so it is best to keep their coat under control. As to when they should get their first haircut, it should be at around six months of age or once the coat is replaced by wavy, adult fur. Why Does My Goldendoodle Stink? Goldendoodles either are in need of a bath or suffer from an allergy that results in excessive oil secretion from their skin, both of which produce an odor as time passes. They need to be bathed once a month to keep them clean and neat. Otherwise, they may develop some skin problems, which can cause them to stink. A shiny coat is a sign of good health and healthy grooming practices. It also helps to use a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner designed for your pooch to keep the fur soft, smooth, and shiny. Some even say that it never stops growing, just like a Poodle. And similarly to human hair, fresh haircuts will keep their coats healthy and maintained. All of this is especially important if you or anyone in your home is allergic to pet dander. As a very important side note: a Doodle being picked up from the groomer sometimes gives us a shock, especially if they were completely shaven down without our consent. Typically, Poodles get a clean face and clean feet and the topknot is rounded with scissors. However, there are many different styles of trims for a Poodle. The listed cuts below are those that first originated for Poodles. By the way, different groomers will have different ideas of how the following types of haircuts should be. Basically, if any of the pictures linked on this page represent what you want your Doodle to look like, be sure to show it to your groomer! This is Part 1 in a 2-part series of posts on types of Doodle haircuts. This post focuses on overall body styles, while Part 2 focuses on the variations of styles for the head, face, ears, legs, feet, and tail using specific grooming terminology. Doodle Puppy Cut The puppy cut is a standard, trimmed style that looks great and cute on many breeds of fluffy dogs, including Doodles. The coat is typically clipped with a longer blade or clipper guard, or scissored to create a fluffy look. Most often, a puppy cut is when a dog is cut to an even length all over the entire body, including the head, ears, and tail. The head, face, ears, and tail can all be cut to a different length than the body if requested. The facial hair is cut in rounded, fringed layers. This style of cut is ideal because it helps to minimize matting , tangles, and allergens. Photo used with permission. Credit: zucca. Credit: miasgroomroom Photo used with permission. It is easy to clean and maintain, and your dog will also look like a rockstar. Goldendoodle Full Shave As we have already mentioned, the kennel cut, this cut is actually a short version of it. From the name, it may appear a bit weird, but it is great for dogs that get bad tangles and mats over time. So if you and your dog are facing a lot of issues because of its matted and tangled mat, the full shave is the perfect solution. This will give your pup a brand new hairstyle but is also great for hot climates. Goldendoodle Round Face Cut Round face cuts are perfect for Goldendoodles as they have small and cute faces. Are you looking for Goldendoodle haircuts that emphasize the adorable features of your pooch? By Lindsay Tigar Lindsay Tigar is a freelance lifestyle and travel journalist. She's also the proud mom of her sweet cockapoo 'dogaughter', Charli, who loves digging in the sand, chasing balls and squirrels , and snuggling up on the couch. This golden retriever and poodle mix is playful, friendly, and intelligent. These dogs have an adorable appearance to match their lovable personality and can be recognized instantly because of their curly coat. His thick, luscious locks make it possible to try countless goldendoodle haircuts! When we think of goldendoodles, we often imagine a gold, curly-haired cutie. However, goldendoodles' coats can be curly, wavy, or straight and appear in an array of colors including brown, cream, red, black, or white. A goldendoodle's parents are going to impact the pup's coat. For example, a F1 goldendoodle with one pure bred poodle parent and one pure bred golden retriever parent could be more of a surprise when it comes to coat texture. Goldendoodles that are 75 percent poodle and 25 percent golden retriever, also known as F1B goldendoodles, tend to inherit that curly poodle coat we're used to associating with this mixed breed. Courtesy of lifeof. Their coats are typically low-allergen compared to other dog breeds in that their hair doesn't shed much. However, all dogs still produce some dander, so allergy sufferers should talk with their doctor before setting their sights on adopting a goldendoodle for that reason alone. Teddy Bear Cut Get your doodle a teddy bear cut and watch him break the cuteness scale. Deemed the most popular goldendoodle style by Danna Alexander, professional groomer and owner of Prestige Dog Grooming School , the teddy bear cut gives your dog cuddly, rounded features. It is accomplished by cutting "rounded ears, rounded facial features, and a soft, fluffy look with rounded paws and a polished overall finish," Alexander tells Daily Paws. The teddy bear cut can range from 0. An experienced dog groomer may use a fully hand-scissored technique for this cut that would offer longer options anywhere from 3—6 inches. While this cut is precious, Alexander mentions it is "very high maintenance" and requires a lot of skill to execute. Summer Cut Looking for an easy, maintainable 'do for your goldendoodle? The summer cut is a great option to consider! The summer cut—or kennel cut—is a short, clippered hairstyle that is typically between a few millimeters up to about a quarter of an inch in length. Puppy Cut The puppy cut is a haristyle that has various meanings and interpretations. For some, it may mean cutting your dog's hair one length all over. However, these lengths can often differ among professional dog groomers, ranging between 0. And for others, a "puppy cut" may be defined as simply making your dog look like a puppy. For Alexander, the puppy cut refers to a puppy's first time grooming. This is where your young goldendoodle will be introduced to the new sounds and sensations of grooming, preparing them for a full haircut in the future. Lion Cut If your goldendoodle has an apricot or tan colored coat, this cut will surely turn heads! Characterized by a teddy bear style front end, a shaved rear end behind the ribs, and a pom-pom on the tip of the tail, the lion cut gives your sweet goldendoodle the appearance of a fierce lion. Alexander mentions the lion cut is a specialty style that requires medium maintenance and should be completed by an experienced groomer. Lamb Cut No matter if your goldendoodle's fleece is white as snow, the lamb cut is an adorable style for all goldendoodles alike. With a lamb cut, groomers leave the length on the legs longer than the length on the body. This cut can be however long or short you prefer. Alexander says that more maintenance is needed the longer the cut, which means your goldendoodle will need to be groomed more frequently. Goldendoodles have beautiful, diverse coats that require consistent grooming so they can look and feel their best. Very long specialty styles, however, could even require weekly grooming appointments! With the right routines, grooming products , and resources, you can easily maintain your goldendoodle's hair at home! Alexander recommends brushing your curly-coated canine every day to prevent uncomfortable mats and knots. She also suggests feeding a high-quality food brand and using professional pet shampoos and conditioners when bathing your dog to keep the coat hydrated and healthy. When in doubt, choose a simple haircut for your precious goldendoodle to cut back on at-home maintenance. Was this page helpful? Aug 2, Share Are you a proud owner of a Goldendoodle? One of the things that makes a Goldendoodle so magnificent is their unique curly coats. There are many different styles out there that will fit your Goldendoodle and give them a personality all of their own. Goldendoodles have thick, dense coats which can be a total drag in the hot summer months. But their coats are going to be significantly shorter than normal. However, there are some huge advantages to this trim other than heat considerations. Most dogs look good with a puppy cut; however, the fluffy nature of their coats brings out their charm in this do. Like the kennel cut, this hairstyle is of uniform length all over their body. It also helps give your pup a youthful appearance no matter their age. Instead of uniformly trimming their face, the area around their snoot is a bit longer against the backdrop of the rest of their face. This gives them a unique, playful look. The puppy cut does have some added benefits besides just making your pooch cute as a button. The short length helps them to prevent mattes and tangles. However, it leaves enough hair to prevent them from completely freezing out when it gets colder. They are half-Poodle, after all! Poodle cuts can often come without warning as well. Even though you may have a specific hairstyle in mind, your groomer may think otherwise. With a Goldendoodle, mattes can run relatively deep due to their thick curly fur. This keeps your dog happy and mat-free without ruining their experience at the groomers. And with a Poodle cut, your pup will generally receive a clean low-cut face, back, belly, and sides. But the tops of their head, ears, tail, and legs can normally maintain a thicker, fluffy appearance as that where less matting will occur. While many Goldendoodle owners love the Poodle cut, others are less enthused by it. This particular hairstyling tends to make your dog look much older and elegant. Their legs are left a little longer and shaped for a puffier, rounder look. And while the lamb cut comes in at our most radical clip so far, the next style takes things to a whole new level. Lion Cut The lion cut is one of those Goldendoodle haircut styles that can set your dog apart from the rest. Normally given to smaller dogs such as the Pomeranian, the lion cut does exactly what it sounds like—makes your pooch look like a lion! This is done by recreating the shaggy mane of a lion and its signature pom tail. You can also customize the lion cut with specific details. It gives them a bit more body and the illusion of a more muscular stature. This style is achieved by giving your pup a kennel cut but leaving a fluffy mohawk that runs down their back starting from the top knot. You can have it run the width of their topknot; however, a common tactic is to shave the sides down and make it just a tad narrower. Is it going to end near their shoulder blades? Or go down their back a bit? The most fun part about a mohawk cut is the colors that you can choose to dye it! Sure, you can go without, and keep it their natural color. Dino Cut This is easily the most ridiculous Goldendoodle haircut styles on our list. The coat of the Goldendoodle seems almost too perfect for unique stylings such as this. Their dense coats allow for bold cuts and shaping. Just be careful when finding a stylist to do this type of cut. The full shave is exactly what it sounds like. From tip to tail, your Goldendoodle will be completely stripped of their coat. By giving your pup a full shave, you can remove all of those nasty mats and other coat clumps. This allows you to start anew and style as you see fit in the future. This can also be a summer option for those who live in extreme heat or tropical climates. Conclusion: Goldendoodle Haircuts Not all of the Goldendoodle haircut styles found on this list are meant for every dog. However, you know your dog better than anyone else.
Breeders vs rescue dogs A Combined History Mixing dog breeds is not a new thing. In fact, cross-breeding has been around for centuries. But, it takes many years to create a distinct breed that is recognized and registered. Designer dogs are typically named based on the breeds used for mating. Border Collies and Labradors are both intelligent working dogs. They have been selectively bred for generations to choose dogs that are driven as well as cooperative, but in slightly different ways. Border Collies are a traditional herding breed mostly used by sheep farmers to control their unruly flocks. Labradors on the other hand spend more time waiting than working, then have bursts of energy fetching fallen birds over long distances and tricky terrain. Like many of the other designer breeds, the Borador has come into existence within the last 10 to 20 years in North America. By mixing the lovable Labrador with the hard-working Border Collie, breeders hoped to get the best of both worlds — an intelligent, energetic, and people-oriented dog that suits almost any role. Most Labradors are quite a bit bigger than Border Collies. But, your mix could fall anywhere between the sizes of its parents. Most Borador dogs will be somewhere between 40 and 60 pounds. Females are usually smaller than males. While Labradors are seen with a solid yellow, brown, or black coat, this mix often takes on the distinct dual or tri-coloring of the Border Collie. You could also end up with a beautiful black Lab Border Collie mix. Black is a dominant coat color, so the black Lab Border Collie mix is one of the most common colors. This can be in a plain form, or bi-color pattern, such as a white and black Lab Border Collie mix. Grooming and Shedding The Border Collie parent can have long or short fur. Labs will have short dense fur. Your Borador mix could be anywhere inbetween. Both parent dogs are known to shed all year round, and heavily during hotter seasons. So, expect to find lots of fur around your home if you own one. Use a bristle or pin brush for grooming once or twice a week and use a slicker brush to remove any mats that you see. Especially if your dog spends a lot of time exercising outdoors. You may need to groom more frequently when shedding is at its heaviest. Border Collie Lab Mix Temperament These dogs can inherit some very unique and positive personality traits from their parent breeds. For starters, Collies are extremely intelligent. According to studies completed by the American Psychological Association, the dogs have the same mental abilities as a two to two-and-a-half-year-old child. While Labradors may act more like toddlers, and have a good deal of smarts themselves, what really stands out about them is their kindness, happiness, and generally easy-going attitudes. Socialization Early socialization is hugely important if you want to raise a healthy, happy, outgoing dog. This process involves exposing your puppy to other dogs and to different people when they are young. It is done so that your dog will not be fearful or aggressive around new people or dogs. Ideally, socialization should begin when your puppy is between 3 and 14 weeks of age. Luckily, both the Border Collie and Labrador are known for their easy, kind temperament, so you should find this process easy and effective. Training Both Labradors and Border Collies are dogs with high levels of intelligence. So, a Borador is likely to become bored and disruptive if not properly entertained. Training can go a long way to help with this. There are various programs that can help you with training. Keep in mind that studies show that positive reinforcement or reward based training are best for your dog. Not only is it highly effective, but it reduces the incidence of problem behaviors and anxiety issues. Borador Energy Levels It should not come as a surprise that the Border Collie Lab mix also needs a fair amount of exercise. They are extremely active dogs that love to run, play, and exert energy for hours each day. The Lab part of the mix typically calms down the hyperactive nature of the Border Collie. But, it depends entirely on the traits they inherit. Some Borador mixes will still have strong herding instincts and could even try to herd young kids or other pets in the house! Border Collie and Labrador Health All dogs are at risk of certain illnesses. The Borador is no exception. Here are some health problems that potential owners should be aware of: Hip dysplasia. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Also known as a borador, or border Lab, this energetic and clever mix combines the best traits of its parent breeds. If you are looking for an affectionate and lively companion dog that loves children and can keep up with your active lifestyle, check out the border Lab! Medium to large in size, these pups are best suited for active families and homes with access to securely fenced backyards. Take this to heart. We had a borador who was an absolute escape artist. He found his way out of our backyard and to the local park on nearly a daily basis. This exceptionally smart mix craves attention and needs a lot of mental stimulation to stay on the best behavior. When bored or left to their own devices, border Labs can become destructive and resort to chewing or digging just to have fun. If you want an outgoing, eager-to-please, loyal, and smart mixed-breed dog for your family, read on! Border Collie Lab Overview Size — 19 to 24 inches tall, weighs between 40 and 65 pounds Coat — Short to medium-long double coat, color varies Shedding — Moderate to heavy shedding Lifespan — 10 to 15 years Temperament — Eager-to-please, outgoing, clever, and energetic Trainable — Highly trainable but can become bored if not mentally stimulated Activity — Very active needs around one to two hours of activity every day Best For — Active families and people, and homes with outdoor space What Is A Labrador Border Collie Mix? As you may have guessed, the Labrador border collie mix is a cross-breed created by mixing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred border collie. While both parent breeds are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, the borador is considered a designer dog breed. Border Collie And Lab Mix Appearance Like all other mixed-breed dogs, no two border Labs are the same and there is no way of knowing exactly what you will get when mixing a border collie and a Lab. Most, however, have a Lab-like build, although they are on the thin side. When it comes to the head and general features, this mix takes more after the Labrador, but they do have the slightly pointed nose of a border collie. However, nothing is set in stone, and the only thing you can do is wait and see how your border collie and Lab mix puppy will grow up to be. With that being said, there are some things you can expect from your mixed breed, mainly when it comes to size and coat color. Size As a mix between Labrador retriever and border collie dog breeds, expect your border Lab to be a medium to large size dog. Most border collie Lab mixes are between 19 and 24 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. There are yellow, brown, black, and fox red Labrador retrievers , but border collies come in many different colors and markings. Most border Labs have brown, black, or tan coats and white markings like their border collie parent. The amount of white fur varies greatly from one borador to the next, with some dogs having completely solid coats and others having several white markings. Coat Depending on which parent they take after, boradors can have short to medium-long coats. Having a double coat means your Lab mix is going to shed moderately all year round, and lose more hair during the shedding season. Most border Labs are outgoing and people-loving dogs that make amazing family pets. In fact, this mix is so friendly that they will likely meet everyone with a wagging tail. They generally become fast friends with children and are very gentle with them. However, thanks to their border collie ancestry, some boradors may try to herd and nip smaller children or other pets. If your mix exhibits this trait, know you can curb their nipping tendencies with training and positive reinforcement. As an offspring of the border collie — the smartest dog breed in the world — the borador tends to be pretty smart as well. Aim to take your border collie Lab mix for at least two long walks every day and also include several playing sessions throughout the day. Games such as fetch, tug-of-war, hide and seek, and flyball are some great ways to exercise your borador and keep it mentally stimulated. Our Border Lab mix, Maffy was high, high, high energy. Obviously inherited from the Border Collie side of the equation. However, a Lab is no slouch when it comes to energy level. Caring For A Borador As with any other dog, you should develop a care routine as soon as you bring a border collie Lab mix puppy home. Exercise Ideally, boradors need around one or two hours of exercise every day. Activities such as running, swimming, jogging, cycling, and hiking are just some ways you can keep your mix exercised and in good shape. Boradors also excel at agility, which is a great way to keep your dog both physically and mentally challenged at the same time. Intellectual Stimulation Since they are very smart, border Labs do best with lots of mental stimulation. If not properly challenged, your mix will become destructive and turn to digging and chewing to relieve boredom. A word of caution, a bored Lab border collie mix might be a recipe for disaster! You might return home from work only to find your shoes, pillows, or carpets chewed and shredded to pieces. Invest in durable chews, interesting puzzle toys to stimulate your dog , and spend some time every day interacting and playing with your pooch to keep them mentally stimulated. Our Border Lab got into all kinds of trouble in the yard digging holes and hiding treats throughout the yard. Another game he enjoyed playing was dropping his ball into the swimming pool. Then wait till it floats to the middle then jump in after it. Without mental stimulation Boradors definitely invent their own games. Companionship Eager-to -lease, loving, and friendly border Labs are true companions and are happy as long as they are involved in all family activities. These dogs crave attention and companionship, and they are best suited for homes where there is someone who can spend a better part of the day playing and interacting with them. When left at home alone a lot, this mix can develop separation anxiety and become destructive. Grooming When compared to other Lab mixes, the borador is a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Although they shed moderately all year round, their coats are easy to groom and need to be brushed two times a week. Brushing your mix regularly with a slicker brush will help you remove loose hair and keep the shedding to a minimum. Diet An ideal diet for a border Lab should be formulated for medium to large size dogs with high energy. Make sure to feed your mix with age-appropriate high-quality dog food that contains all essential micro and macronutrients. Avoid free feeding your mix and set up a regular feeding schedule to prevent obesity and health problems associated with it. Although border Labs are generally healthy, they are prone to some of the same health problems that affect Labrador retrievers and border collies. This can be extremely painful for a dog, causing arthritis, difficulty walking, and lameness later in life. Collie Eye Anomaly: This is a congenital eye disease that occurs in border collies and affects the retina, sclera, and choroid. CEA is caused by a recessive gene defect and can be a mild condition or cause blindness. Hypothyroidism: This is a condition in which the thyroid gland is no longer able to produce the hormone thyroxine. Life Expectancy The border Lab has an average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. When properly cared for and taken to regular veterinary checkups, some boradors can reach senior years completely healthy. We had a Border Collie Lab mix that we rescued from our local animal shelter. They told us he was approximately 2 years old when we rescued him. He lived with us for 18 years! Add on the approximately 2 years he lived before he came to our home he lived a whopping 20 years! True to their parent breeds, border Labs are eager to please and very intelligent, which makes them highly trainable. Like all other dogs, the Lab border collie mix responds well to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Start training and socializing your borador puppy as soon as you bring them home when they are eight to 12 weeks old. While your pup might seem small, you can start potty training and teach them basic commands. Border Labs make truly wonderful companions and pets to active people or families with children. Couch potatoes be warned; this designer hybrid needs a lot of exercise and will keep you on your toes. Due to their energetic nature and high exercise needs, boradors need a home with access to a fenced yard where they can run around and play. Buying A Border Collie And Lab Mix Puppy If you want to purchase a border collie and Lab mix puppy, find a reputable breeder and schedule an appointment to visit their facilities. A reputable breeder will let you meet the mother and all the puppies. Check your local shelter and rescue groups to see if they have any border Labs. You can also contact Labrador retriever and border collie breed-specific rescue groups since they often take care of mixed-breed dogs too. History Of The Breeds Labrador Retriever One of the most popular dog breeds in the world, the Labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland where they helped fishermen catch fish. Universally loved for their kind, friendly, fun, and loyal nature, Labs make great family pets and companions. Highly intelligent, gentle, and eager-to-please, Labrador retrievers are favored as service dogs and are often seen assisting people with disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Border Collie Developed in the border country between Scotland and England, the border collie is a working and herding dog breed. Originally bred to herd sheep, border collies are a highly intelligent and very trainable dog breed. Naturally athletic and energetic, border collies need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and thrive. Boradors are good companions and amazing pets to active people and families with children. They tend to be friendly, loving, eager-to-please, and smart, which makes training fairly easy even for novice owners. As long as they are properly exercised and provided with the attention they need, border Labs make wonderful pets. Are boradors aggressive? Boradors are rarely aggressive towards people or other dogs and tend to greet everyone with a wagging tail. Inherently friendly and kind, the collie Lab mix gets along well with children with whom they become fast friends. How much does a border collie Lab mix cost? Conclusion Extremely clever, eager-to-please, and friendly, the border collie Lab mix makes a great pet for active people and families with children. True to its parent breeds, this mix has a lot of energy and needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation, otherwise, they can become bored and destructive. Boradors are best suited for: Outdoorsy people and active families with children Homes with securely fenced backyards People who can interact and play with their pup every day We told you a little about our Border Collie Lab mix, Maffy, but how about you? If you are looking for a friendly and energetic dog to adopt into the family, then the Borador, which is a mix between a Labrador retriever and a border collie, might be a perfect choice! Attractive, intelligent, and friendly to a fault, these dogs have the perfect temperament for playing at home with the kids or accompanying their parents on epic adventures. However, they do need lots of love and attention to thrive. While there exists a diverse range of different types of Boradors, the most popular mix is between a black Labrador and a border collie. This typically results in a distinctive and sleek black pup, often with white accents. Always consider heading to your local shelter before purchasing a pup. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Boradors and decide whether they are the perfect pup to join your home. The breed was established in the s and has been one of the most popular dog breeds in the Western world ever since. Their friendly nature, intelligence, and eagerness to please make them ideal working dogs, and you will often see Labs in service dog roles such as disability assistance. Their composure makes them the ideal dog to accompany their owners into public spaces, though they are known as big shedders. The border collie is a herding dog that was developed along the Anglo-Scottish border. It was officially recognized as a breed in .Border collies are both intelligent and athletic, which has made them favorites as sports dogs, particularly in sheepdog trials. It is believed that initial combinations of Labs and border collies were probably accidental, but breeders soon realized the combination made for a very desirable mix. While all kinds of Borador mixes exist, the most popular mix is between black Labradors and border collies, creating distinctive-looking black dogs with white accents. The term is not generally used for accidents, but rather specifically for these designer dogs that are emerging. However, it is important to differentiate between crossbreeds and pure breeds. Pure breeds tend to pass down physical and character traits in a very predictable way, making it possible to define the breed. When it comes to crossbred dogs, though, there is less consistency in the way characteristics manifest. It is possible to generalize to an extent about what to expect from a crossbred dog, and breeders do control for characteristics as much as possible. Luckily, when it comes to Boradors, you are working with two incredibly intelligent and friendly breeds, so the result always tends to be something special. Borador Appearance Labrador and border collie mixes are medium-to-large-sized dogs that tend to fall somewhere between the size of their two parents. Breeders typically make sure the mother is larger so they have no trouble passing the baby pups. Labradors tend to be between .They usually weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Border collies are a bit smaller, reaching between 18 and 22 inches in height and weighing between 30 and 55 pounds. They tend to have a longer muzzle and a leaner physique, though this is not always easy to see through their medium-length hair. As a result, you can expect a Borador to be between 19 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 65 pounds. Remember, you can get a better idea of the potential height and weight of a puppy by looking at their parents. Most Borador pups tend to have the slightly heavier build of the Labrador, though they are usually a little on the thin side. They also tend to have the broad face of their Lab parent, though with a longer, more pointed nose. You can usually expect your Borador puppy to be a mix of whatever color their parents were. Most puppies take on the more solid black color of their Lab parent coupled with the white markings of their border collie parent. So, if you are mixing a black Lab with a border collie, you can expect a mostly black dog with white accents. Boradors typically have a double coat that will either look like the short hair of a Labrador retriever or the medium-length hair of a border collie. Regardless of their coat color, your Borador will shed quite a lot, as both Labradors and border collies are known for their high-shedding coats. Borador Personality Labradors and border collies have a lot of personality traits in common, so the characters and temperaments of Boradors are relatively easy to predict. First and foremost, both breeds are considered to be highly intelligent. They can both learn new things quickly, and they are also able to think independently. This allows them to adapt to new situations and determine what is expected of them, even if they have not been provided with specific instructions. But unlike very independent dogs that can be difficult to train due to their stubbornness, both Labradors and border collies were bred to work alongside humans. This has made them very eager to please, which makes training through reward and positive reinforcement highly effective. This is also why Labradors can be trained to complete the complex tasks required of a guide dog for the blind and why border collies can be trained to deliver elaborate tricks in a sporting dog competition. You can expect a Borador to be highly trainable as well. Both dogs tend to be friendly with strangers and other animals rather than territorial. They are more likely to be curious and keen to make friends than raise the alarm. This quality makes Boradors great companions but not very effective guard dogs. Their affectionate nature tends to be particularly notable with children, around whom they are instinctively careful. It is generally considered safe to let Labradors and border collies play with small children, though they should be supervised at all times in case of any mishaps. This can involve giving them a nip that is designed to surprise rather than hurt. Fortunately, they can easily be trained out of this behavior if you notice it and implement corrective training early on. While they can safely be left alone for up to four or five hours at a time, they can develop anxiety if they are left alone for long periods of time while everyone in the household is off working. You can expect them to respond with destructive behaviors, such as digging and chewing. This is not done out of vengeance but rather boredom or frustration. Finally, these dogs are very energetic, and they need lots of exercise. Ideally, they should get at least an hour of activity each day, spread out over two shorter sessions. They will also love to accompany you on weekend field trips and hiking adventures. Due to their size and energy levels, Boradors do best when they have a big home with a nice backyard to play in. While they can be trained to put up with apartment living as long as they have regular opportunities to stretch their legs, it is not the ideal environment for them to thrive in. Borador Health Risks You can expect a Borador to have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years, which is respectable for a dog of their size. While they are generally healthy dogs, they are at risk of some health conditions. In particular, they may develop elbow or hip dysplasia, which is a painful malformation of the joints that can make movement difficult, especially as they get older. Boradors are less likely to develop this condition if they get sufficient exercise and have a healthy diet. An orthopedic bed will also give them a lot of comfort in late life. Boradors are susceptible to a variety of different eye conditions that can cause them to partially lose their sight in later years. This can be highly disorienting for them, but they can still feel comfortable in a familiar home where they know where everything is. Finally, Boradors can also be prone to obesity, as they have little control over their hunger hormones. This is why it is imperative that they get enough exercise and that you monitor their calorie intake, reducing or increasing portions as required. Never leave food out for these dogs; they do best with strict and limited meal times. With all that information in mind, you might still be wondering whether a Borador is the right dog for you. Here are a few questions to consider when making your decision. A Borador can actually be a great dog for first-time owners. They are easy to train and they have a friendly temperament, so you are unlikely to find yourself dealing with an aggressive or troublesome dog. A Borador will want to be part of the family and involved in everything. You also need to invest time in exercising them and teaching them, as they need the mental stimulation of training. Do you have time to look after a dog like this? If so, the Borador is likely a good choice. How Big Is Your Home? Boradors are pretty big dogs with lots of energy, so they do best when they have quite a bit of space. Will your home feel full with a inch-tall dog wandering about? Additionally, do you have an outdoor space where they can let off energy when needed? When you bring a Borador puppy home, you can expect them to live for anywhere from 10 to 15 or more years. Can you handle the responsibility of caring for them for that time, including the financial responsibility of caring for them? Do you have people who can look after them when you go away or in case of an emergency? Dog ownership is a big responsibility, regardless of the breed you adopt. Yes, Boradors are considered very good dogs, especially if you are looking for a loyal and fairly easy to manage family dog. They are highly intelligent, very trainable, and bond with families quickly. Boradors are high-energy and need a lot of attention, so they are best for families that have time to enjoy them. How smart are border collie Lab mixes? Both border collies and Labrador retrievers are considered among the smartest dog breeds, alongside the likes of poodles and German shepherds. As a result, you can expect crossbreeds that bring together their genetics to be highly intelligent. How much does a border collie Lab mix cost? Can Boradors swim? Labrador retrievers are known for their love of playing and swimming in water, so there is a good chance their Borador offspring will also love a good swim. If they have the longer coat of their border collie parent, just beware of the amount of water that they are likely to drip after a swim! When is a Borador fully grown? Boradors actually remain playful puppies for quite some time and can take quite a long time to reach their full size. You can expect females to reach their full adult size when they hit around 24 months, while males take a bit longer and are not fully grown until around 36 months. While the dogs will also lose most of their puppy energy upon reaching adulthood, they will remain energetic and athletic dogs for most of their lives. The Verdict If you are a first-time dog owner or anyone looking for a friendly, intelligent, and easy to manage dog to adopt into your family, a Borador is a great choice. Since their Labrador and border collie parents are both intelligent, trainable, and friendly dogs, their offspring are sure to inherit these wonderful traits. Overall, the Borador crossbreed is: High-energy and needs plenty of space to feel comfortable Agreeable, friendly, and loyal, though they are prone to developing separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time Quite large dogs, like their Labrador and border collie parents While Boradors are generally easy to manage, they also need quite a bit of your time and dedication to stay happy. Take time to consider whether you have the time to look after one of these pups properly before taking them home. Do you have any experience with Boradors? You should take her out for a brisk one-hour walktwice a day. If you are running, twenty minutes to half an hour should be enough. If your dog tires you will notice her slowing or beginning to pant excessively you should stop for a five-minute break and hydrate her. I recommend taking out a collapsible doggie bowl in which you can give her water. A note on exercising your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy This advice on exercise applies to the adult dog only, as when large-breed puppies do too much running and ball-chasing this can cause long-term injuries. With your Pitbull Boxer Mix puppy, it is best to do lots of short walks and indoor play until she matures, at about 1 year — 16 months. Watch this 11 week old Pitbull Boxer Mix. She is curious, playful, active, and absolutely, jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Whatever the weather — not with this dog! In rainy weather, she will need a doggie coat to keep her warm. During summer months, it is best to take her out in the early morning or the evening when the sun is less intense. She may still need sunscreen, but make sure you purchase one without zinc oxide, as it is toxic for dogs. The Pitbull is also a very affectionate dog when well-socialized, who will lick you all over if you give her an inch. She was in fact bred for both work and companionship , and due to her gentle nature, is beginning to be used more and more as a therapy dog. Both Boxer and Pitbull are also great with children , which makes them excellent family dogs. The Boxer is very patient and protective, while the Pitbull is solid, a people-pleaser and highly trainable. So mix them together and what have you got? A companionable, affectionate dog who fits in perfectly with a family, wants a lot of attention and gives in return. It is, of course, worth noting that as puppies they are going to be more hyper, and so their contact with children must be supervised. Also, your dog must be well-exercised to be around children, as if not she will be incredibly excitable and could knock over a small child. Her guard dog instinct is strong, which can be useful if there is an intruder or attacker. These are courageous dogs who used to risk their lives baiting bulls, so have no doubt that she will defend you and yours if necessary. If this instinct gets out of hand, however, it can become a problem. You must make sure that you socialize your Boxer Pitbull Mix from a young age with as many people as you can. Invite friends and neighbors to your home and provide her with a positive association by having the person give her a treat when they arrive. As long as you train her well and stay consistent, this dog will be the friendliest dog around. She might be too hands-on for older pets Providing they are both socialized properly, both breeds can get on well with other animals, particularly Boxers. As for play style, Pitbulls can be rough and Boxers like to use their front paws when playing much like a boxer… oh, that makes sense! People are also beginning to look past the negative stigma around Pitbulls and realize their high intelligence and trainability, too. Director of Operations at Universal K9 claims that out of the hundreds of dogs he has trained for police work, the Pitbull, Kiah, is one of the top three he has ever placed. These dogs can be stubborn, though, meaning that you need to be firm and consistent with them. As long as you are in charge, your Boxer Pitbull Mix should pick up basic commands quickly. Make sure you do enough repetition and provide rewards and lots of praise. As puppies, they are boisterous and energetic little characters. You will need to be assertive in order to get their focus. She is a moderate shedder Though these dogs have a short coat, they are moderate shedders and will require a good grooming session once a week. They will probably lose more fur in the Spring, from April through May, so it may be a good idea to brush her twice a week during these periods. She will also need her ears checked monthly, either at the vet or with a reputable groomer. She is usually healthy but has some potential health concerns The Pitbull Boxer Mix is generally a healthy breed, as both pure breeds are as long as she gets sufficient exercise, of course and as I mentioned in the intro it can live for up to 13 years. Having said that, it is always worth being informed on any potential health issues this breed can develop, so here are the main ones your dog could be prone to: Cancer While the majority of Boxers are healthy , they are at risk of an aggressive form of cancer called hemangiosarcoma , which occurs in the blood vessel cells. It can be difficult to detect, but signs can include weakness, a distended abdomen, difficulty breathing and weight loss. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible, as this cancer can spread rapidly. Hip dysplasia This condition consists of a malformation of the hip joint, where it is unstable or loose in the socket. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals shows that this condition occurs in both breeds , although Pitbulls are more susceptible. Severe cases can lead to arthritic joints and lameness. Signs can include walking or running with an altered gait and reluctance to fully extend their rear legs or jump. Weight control helps enormously with this condition; keep her slim, as any excess weight will put stress on her joints. Heart disease The Boxer is prone to a heart problem called aortic stenosis , which in most cases of the disease the dog is born with. This disease causes narrowing of the aortic valve, which puts pressure on the heart. Symptoms can include rapid breathing or difficulty breathing, sudden loss of consciousness, and congestive heart failure. If your vet picks up a heart murmur, the diagnosis can be confirmed with an X-ray and a cardiac ultrasound. Allergies Pitbulls can have various allergies , so your Pitbull Boxer Mix may be susceptible. They can be treated with antihistamines, and in the case of skin irritation, you should use shampoos specifically designed for sensitive skin. Conclusion Are you a family with children without any older pets? Are you ready to dedicate your days to plenty of exercise and play with your new lively companion? Can you give her the consistent training she needs? If the answer is yes to all of the above, you are more than ready to own a Pitbull Boxer Mix, and she will be more than happy to have you. Have you got a Pitbull Boxer Mix and a story to share? Comment below! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Had her posted on the local shelter site but no takers. We have a year-old Chihuahua and 8-year-old Yorkie so keeping the new dog inside is not possible. For a temporary measure we put a cardboard box with lots of pillows and blankets warmed in the dryer on the porch swing. It has since warmed up into the range. She appears to be happy running around outside and sleeping on the porch swing near the now chewed up box. We have ordered a dog house for her and are having her spayed tomorrow. We are a late middle-aged couple but I hope to be able to walk with her at least once a day. I hope you can wish us well for rescuing her. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Owners must be diligent about monitoring diet. Bullboxer Pits have often been used as farm or guard dogs, due mostly to their loyal nature and powerful strength. The most regularly seen coat colors are brown, tan, yellow, and black. Although their coats are easy to maintain, Bullboxer Pits do shed all year long. Brushing can help. Due to their exercise requirements, physical strength, and need for training, this breed might not be best for novice dog owners. Boxers came on the scene in Germany back in the s; the dogs were often used to transport supplies and ferry messages to troops during the first two World Wars. The American Pit Bull Terrier was first employed in blood sports and used in baiting bears and bulls. The first ever Bullboxer Pits can be traced back to a German dog breed called the Bullenbeisser, which is now extinct. Due to the care and attention Bullboxer Pits require from an owner, many of them can end up in shelters. Bullboxer Pit Size The Bullboxer Pit is often described as a medium-sized dog, although they are also stockier and sturdier than many other middle-sized canines. Most weigh in at 50 to 80 pounds and range in height from 16 to 20 inches. Female Bullboxer Pits can often be a little smaller than their male counterparts. Bullboxer Pit Personality Bullboxer Pits have often been used as farm or guard dogs, due mostly to their loyal nature and powerful strength. These dogs can be especially devoted to their families, and often become very protective of any children in the household. Very upbeat walks—or even jogs—are required, so the owner must also be able to maintain a healthy and regular exercise routine. Around two hours of exercise per day is required—adding agility training or even swimming to the daily sessions can help vary things up. Apartment dwellers may find that many buildings do not permit Bullboxer Pits to live with them. Some of the more common health problems Bullboxer Pits suffer from include: Obesity due to overeating. These large dogs are a loyal and energetic companion for any family and their intelligence makes them playful and fun to be around. They may look like their Pitbull parent or they make look like their Boxer parent. One thing we can be sure of though is that, with the right socialization, these dogs are an excellent family member. Breed Origin It can be difficult to know where the Pitbull Boxer Mix originated from, so we can take a look at the parent breeds in more detail to understand the origins of this dog. The Pitbull parent in the Pitbull Boxer mix can actually be any of four types of Pitbull. The Pitbull was created in early 19th-century England for the popular spectator sports of bull and bear baiting. They were thought of as aggressive fighting dogs but it was also known that they were very gentle with humans and made excellent family dogs. The Boxer was also originally a fighting dog and was used by the Germans to chase and hold down bear, bison and wild boar. However, as time went on, they began to diminish in size and therefore became much better suited to family life, thus becoming a family pet. Characteristics Of The Pitbull Boxer Mix As we have mentioned above, it can be difficult to know the exact characteristics of the Pitbull Boxer Mix because they may take after one parent more than the other. However, we can make assumptions based on past litters. You must make sure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Appearance Taking a look at the parent breeds will give a good indication as to what your Pitbull Boxer Mix may look like when fully grown. The size of the Pitbull Boxer Mix depends on which type of Pitbull was used to breed. The American Pitbull Terrier is the largest breed of Pitbull and will produce the largest dogs. Coat The Pitbull Boxer Mix has a smooth, short coat as this is the type of coat both their parent breeds have. Luckily, they do not require much grooming, but we will go into more detail about that later on. However, they can come in a wide range of colors, including black, red, white, grey, blue, brown and tan. Temperament The Boxer Pitbull Mix is a loyal and lovable dog that loves to be around people. Super playful, these pups just want to be outside with you, playing games and accompanying you on hikes. If you need to leave them for more than 3 hours at a time, then it is a good idea to employ a dog walker or sitter to look after your friendly pup! These dogs are very intelligent, which is one of the reasons they love to play. Also because of their intelligence, they can get bored very easily. They must be kept entertained otherwise they can get frustrated and begin to exhibit signs of unwanted behaviors. It is a common misconception that because both parent breeds were originally fighting dogs, that the Pitbull Boxer Mix is an aggressive breed. This is not true. You will need to train and socialize your Pitbull Boxer Mix, but they are certainly not violent and really just want to be loved by you! Often, these dogs can feel it is their duty to protect their owners and can make good watchdogs and guard dogs. They will bark when they feel something is out of place or if there is a threat, so this is something to watch out for! Lifespan The Bullboxer has an average life expectancy of between 10 to 14 years. Known Health Issues Unfortunately, as with any breed of dog, the Pit Boxer Mix is at risk of inheriting the same health problems that their parent breeds are predisposed to. Below we have laid out the main health concerns that this breed face. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Aortic stenosis — this is a heart defect that is often found in large dog breeds. It can be treated with medication. Cardiomyopathy — this is an enlarged heart with poor function. It can be helped with medication. Degenerative myelopathy — this is a progressive disease of the spinal cord. There is no cure but there is treatment. It can be helped with intensive physical rehabilitation. Allergies — the Pitbull Boxer can be prone to allergies from a range of causes such as food and pollen. It can lead to scratching and other skin infections. Thyroid issues — this is common in Boxers, who can have either an overactive or underactive thyroid. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the Bullboxer, it is time to take a look at what daily life with one of these dogs is really like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. This means that the amount of food you will be feeding them will vary. You should always check the back of the food packet to see the exact amount you should be feeding them of a particular food based on their weight. On average, a dog of this size with the same activity level will need roughly calories a day, which is about 2 cups worth. This should be split into at least two meals a day. This food you feed your Pitbull Boxer Mix should be a high-quality kibble. It should contain a good source of protein so that they can stay active. Take a look at the dog food we recommend below. Pitoxer Description The Bullboxer Pit is not a purebred dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in any of the breeds in the hybrid. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He's 11 months old soon to be 1 and enjoys chew toys, meat sticks, long walks on the beach literally and generally giving everyone love. He was a bit shy at first, but once he got to know me he came around. He has a high dislike for other dogs from being attacked at a young age, but he is a good dog all around. He is a energetic little guy who is constantly pestering his mom to play with him. He loves his treats and is starting to learn basic commands very quickly. When the day is over and it's time to call it a night he's the first one to cuddle up with you and is off to dreaming most likely of chasing his mom around the yard within minutes. He has been a great addition to the family, and unlike his parents when they were his age he has been great at not chewing on things other than his chew toys. I've only lost one hat to his playfull chewing, which is considerably better than countless shoes, cords, hats etc that his parents had destroyed by the time they were 4 months old. I look forward to watching him grow up and turn into what I'm sure will be the most popular and handsome dog on the block. She is a great dog. She is very loving and has more Pit Bull characteristics than Boxer. She has the Boxer lips and lower jaw that sticks out a little further than the upper. He is very fast, hence his name. Rocket is a fast learner. He learned many tricks including high five, shake, sit and lie down at only 4 months old. Rocket loves to learn! He loves Meaty Bones. He is a loving dog like a Boxer but also strong and muscular like an American Pit Bull. I rescued Rocket from people who were feeding him raw meat and kicking him just when he was about a month old. He is the best dog I have ever had. His mother was a Pit Bull and his father a Boxer. He's very sweet and sleeps a lot. He's a climber! He's also very smart. He already knows sit, stay, lie down, come here, his name, go potty, as well as a variety of other words that indicate where to go crate, bedroom, outside. He is so gentle that he can attack a balloon playfully for 35 minutes before popping it.Everyone loves him and he's changing everyone's attitudes about Pit Bull type dogs or Pit Bull mixes. Pitbull Boxer Mix Exercise Requirements The general advice for most dogs would be to train them while they are young. But in the case of your Pitbull Boxer cross, you have to very cautious. Puppies of large-breed origin that exerts too much energy from running or playing can cause injuries that may last his lifetime. For puppies, activities may be limited to regular short walks or play until it has reached a certain maturity, around one year up to 16 months. As it gets old, the daily exercise requirement will also change. For an adult Pitbull boxer, minutes of exercise should be adequate to maintain good health. It is a very energetic hybrid so they will thrive in a lively environment. An ideal home would mean lots of space to move around, inside or in the backyard. Some states enforce restrictions with regards to Pitbull mixes like your pitbull boxer, so you have to keep it on a leash while out exercising. Using a leash will also prevent them from running into or jumping into everyone they encounter. They are most happy walking around in the city or the Dog Park or even trudging in the mountains. Another essential thing to consider is the weather. During the rainy season, your dog will need a raincoat to protect her from the rain and also to keep her warm. Sunscreen can be used but avoid products with zinc oxide, as it is a poisonous substance. The jacket provides full chest coverage, and the solid print is stylishly chic. The elastic leg straps and adjustable fastener guarantees a snug band comfortable fit. It also features reflectorized stitching so you can see your dog even at night. It is guaranteed durable — it features a galvanized cable and coated with crack-resistant vinyl. It should be able to withstand up to 7x the weight of your dog. My Dog Nose It! Pitbull Boxer Cross Training The combination of Pitbull and Boxer is explosively stubborn, so it is a suitable pet for someone with a firm and unyielding grip in training and socialization. And as always, your dog will react and respond best with positive reinforcement, rewards, and incentives. Punishment will never work, and more often than not, will only create or aggravate behavioral problems. It is essential to reward your pet to encourage positive behavior. Early socialization and training from puppyhood will form the foundation of a well-adjusted dog. Training your Pitbull Boxer should be a piece of cake because of their ability to pick up commands. To get their focus though, you would need to be tough and establish yourself as the master and make him obey you. We listed some training activities you can try out with your petpal: Behavior Training — How do you train him to stop barking mad? Constant practice will help you achieve the desired effect but never shout at him even if he continues to bark. Also, allow him to learn commands other than barking. Keep in mind that the goal is to reward your pup for being silent. Chores Training — Teach him to fetch your newspaper for you. Playing fetch with a toy or a ball should prep your dog for this activity. All you have to do is replace the toy with the newspaper and tech your Pitbull boxer how to get it, pick it up or bring it back to you. Fun Training — Rollover is one activity designed with your big Boxer Pitbull in mind. Start with getting your dog to lie down, and eventually how to roll over. Make sure you reward each action accordingly, and of course, practice makes perfect. Their energetic and sometimes rowdy nature can knock off small bodies, so be extra careful if you have kids. There are specific training designed to help you manage this kind of behavior. Reach out to your vet for more information on a proper Bullboxer Pit care. Pitbull Boxer Mix Grooming And Shedding The most important factor is that these dogs are low shedding and low maintenance. They seldom require many products and it means getting trims on a daily basis is not needed. The Bullboxer Pit sheds moderately. Unreasonable shedding indicates some sort of a health issue. Use a brush and comb their loose hair. Bathing is recommended once in a fortnight or when suggested by your vet. A soft bristle brush or a curry comb is enough. Medicated shampoos are needed if skin disorders are present. If your dog consists of the wrinkles and facial folds of the Boxer, then examine the muzzle and face area on a regular basis. Prevent the growth of bacterial infestations, fungal, and red yeast due to drooling problems. These dogs need safe moisturizer and need attention to stop cracking and drying. Start this habit early as some hybrids can be stubborn about getting their feet touched. Brush their teeth once daily and provide them with dental treats. This will keep their gums strong. Clip their nails and clean their ears regularly. Hire a professional groomer if you are unsure of anything. The most crucial thing is that you should follow and adopt consistent training. Experts suggest early training for this breed because of obesity issues. They have the potential to become abnormal chewers. This need not adhere only to cushions, shoes, or anything including food. Cardiomyopathy — Cardiomyopathy is a condition which affects the heart. Sudden heart failure or fainting can occur. Some dogs can also develop congestive heart failure. I felt soo bad for him. He was constantly rubbing his face on my bed, the couch, rugs etc so itch his wrinkles. They were so red and full of bacteria. The first picture is right before I used the wipes for the first time. You can see how red and gross his wrinkles are!! Literally used two wipes on his face and it has dramatically gotten so much better. These are a must if you have a bulldog, pug, or any dog with wrinkles!! A dog bed with high walls and a sherpa fabric so your French bulldog can cuddle up in a cute little ball and snooze the day away. The bed has a waterproof bottom and is machine-washable, so any accidents are a breeze to clean up. I got the Jumbo size plenty big enough , and she alternates between snuggling into a ball and laying with her head propped up on the edge to keep tabs on the kids. The inside material is as soft as can be, and I kind of want to cuddle up in there. The good news is that the bed comes out of the wash as good as new! Anyway, I highly recommend it for your furry BFF. A slow feeder dog bowl to keep your fast-eating pup from gobbling down all their food in five seconds flat. The intricate design forces them to slow down, therefore preventing that unwanted bloating, gas, and vomiting that comes with fast eating. It definitely works! He has to take his time eating now, it keeps him occupied longer and it's nice and low profile for his short snout. I would highly recommend this bowl for short nosed breeds. He's less gassy and seems more satisfied with his meals. If you want to slow your eater, this is the bowl for you! This is a well-made product, sturdy, good weight, won't tip over and is dishwasher-safe! Or this slanted pet bowl that helps your dog reach all of their food. Frenchies have notoriously flat snouts, so by bringing their food a little closer to them, they won't have to work as hard to get every last piece of kibble. Could have maybe gone with XL bowl for water but large was perfect for his food. Keeps his face cleaner and seems to make it easier for him to reach in! Love these! Ordered a few replacement bowls to switch out after meals. Seem to be holding up well in dishwasher! A very fashionable bomber jacket so your dog will be the best-looking, coziest canine on the block. Due to their short coats, French bulldogs can get cold very easily in the winter, so this will keep them warm during your daily walks. Amazon, amazon. This is his favorite jacket to wear outside when it's cold. He will actually go to it for me to put it on him. Easy to put on with the zipper and the o ring is strong enough to attach a leash without the need for his harness. The quality of workmanship is great! I love the look of it as well, like a little bomber jacket. An adjustable dog harness if your Frenchie tends to pull and tug on their leash whenever you take them for a walk. This harness perfectly accommodates their stocky but short body and it won't ride up and choke them on walks. I came upon this one and another and ordered both. We returned the other harness and kept this one! I love that this step in harness is easy to put on a wiggly puppy, has a sturdy Velcro closure and the safety clips are above the padded Velcro for comfort. This keeps him nice and safe in his car seat and off of my lap when driving. We will definitely be purchasing this again as he grows. A tub of nose butter designed to moisturize and soften a French bulldog's cracked and irritated nose. Frenchies are prone to developing nasal hyperkeratosis aka dry nose , so you'll want to apply this all-natural formula on a regular basis to prevent that dreaded crustiness. We purchased this and within three or four days of using it we noticed the spikes went down and it was just dry at that point but the dryness goes down every day we look at it. A car seat to keep your dog safe and secure as you drive around. It's extra padded to keep them comfortable even through sharp turns or sudden stops. Dog loves it too!! I had a very hard time choosing the large or small because none of the reviews were specific on the size they bought for their dog at their dog's weight. I have a French bulldog puppy who weighs .It's perfect!!! Just looking at it out of the box I thought it was smaller than what I expected it to be so I was so happy I didn't get the small because I couldn't imagine him fitting in it. Once I put him in it I realized how spacious it was for him and cozy. At his full grown size he very much will still be cozy in it and I'm very pleased with this purchase. I couldn't picture a dog bigger than 12 pounds fitting into the small size now seeing the large. I would definitely recommend it. A hide-a-squirrel plush toy that your dog will become obsessed with as they search for the cute 'lil squirrels tucked inside the log. My French bulldog loves the squirrels and the tree! I keep putting the squirrel inside the tree and she keeps taking them out. This toy definitely keeps her entertained! Make sure you play with your dog and the squirrels first and then make your dog see how you put the squirrels back in the tree. A bag of Royal Canin dog food formulated to meet the nutritional needs of French bulldog puppies. It'll help develop good digestive health, make their skin healthy, and support their immune system during that critical first year. Amazon Promising review: "We started feeding this to our French bulldog puppy when she was around 6 months old. We were having the issue of her eating her other puppy food too fast and not being able to chew it so she threw up a lot. We switched to Royal Canin French Bulldog puppy because of the shape of the kibble. She loved it and now chews her food plus her coat is looking great and she no longer has dandruff. A few months after we switched her we rescued a French bulldog puppy who had been neglected. He did not have any muscle in his back legs and was severely underweight. We transitioned him to Royal Canin from the food he was on in between homes and he started looking amazing. His coat started shining and he started developing muscle like he should have had in the first place. And this dog food from Blue Buffalo that fits your French bulldog's nutritional needs as they get older. It's high-protein, made with real meat, and contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Amazon Promising review: "First off, I'll give you a little background on my dog and tell you why I prefer this particular brand so much. I have a French bulldog who is almost 10 years old and he is a big fan of all food especially the human variety. The main issue I've always had with him and I know he isn't the only bulldog guilty of this, but he is a VERY gassy little dude. His stomach is so finicky that I've found no food that can completely conquer the gas problem. This particular brand is well known for being top notch and I'll tell you it's been by far the best dog food I've ever fed my guy. First off he loves it and always dances and jumps when he knows I'm filling his bowl. Secondly, and maybe no less important, it has really helped control his gassy reactions to most any food he eats. It's been a god send for me because this guy could clear out one level of my house on most any other food. Needless to say, I highly recommend Blue and this particular variety in particular for your pet. A dog raincoat because we all know that French bulldogs can be stubborn, so if they refuse to go outside when it's raining, throw this cute raincoat on them to keep them dry and happy. He loves wearing this raincoat. It has two straps, one under the belly and one across the chest. The hood fits over his head perfect, and the strap under him is in the perfect position so he can easily potty. A set of squeaky plush toys that come in cute woodland animal designs. It doesn't contain any stuffing, so if your Frenchie gets a bit rough with toys as they often do! As soon as I gave them to her, she carried them over to her toy box. Since getting them, they are all she wants to play with. Each of them has three squeakers throughout the toy and she actually looks for them to squeak them while playing. They look like they are made very well and should last as great toys for my dog. A hydrating lotion to apply all over your dog's body to keep their skin moisturized and their coat looking healthy and smelling great. Frenchies are prone to dry skin, so you'll want to keep this on hand in case they start itching. Amazon Promising review: "My French bulldog's coat can feel wiry especially in winter when she needs to wear a jacket and inside heating is dry. Daily brushing helped but not completely. A month ago I added this hydrating butter at the end of each brushing and the results are amazing. Her coat is silky soft, she hardly sheds anymore, and the butter is non-greasy. I simply put a dollop in my hands, dab it on her, and then massage it in. She's in heaven. Thank you for this great product! A lightweight dog water bottle with a built-in cap that acts as a water bowl on-the-go. You don't want your Frenchie getting dehydrated on long walks! He already knows when we go on walks he has his water bottle to keep him hydrated and going! A bottle of stain-and-odor eliminator that you should always have on hand in case your adorable, wrinkly four-legged friend leaves a not-so-adorable, smelly mess on the carpet. I'd drench the cushions in the latest product I'd bought, but then after they dried, when you sat on them, you'd smell dog urine again. So, of course, I've always been on the lookout for new odor-eliminating products, and man, I'm celebrating the day I found this stuff because it actually works! I didn't even have to soak the area that has been peed on. And there haven't been any more accidents!!! Close share Copy link What are the items that you need to have for your French Bulldog? I have some puppy energy left which is perfect for walks around the neighborhood or adventures. I have been practicing walking on a leash and I don't pull unless I see an occasional cat run across the street. I might bark a few times if someone walks past my yard, but I like to keep to myself on walks and I did such a great job at the vet even though it was noisy and full of strangers. I am also really good at making the perfect cozy spot to lay down with my blankets and have been doing a great job sleeping in a crate at night. I am friendly with dogs and eager to play. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Though he may embody some of the best canine characteristics, he is not for everyone. He needs a family that is willing to put up with his high-energy and need for constant activity. You will find that your new puppy will need a lot of exercise in order to stave off the boredom this breed commonly experiences, and therefore nix excessive barking and chewing before it becomes a habit. Additionally, this breed is not one for being left alone. When left by himself for long periods of time, he may become bored and frustrated, and act out in ways that may try your patience, such as chewing up your shoes or barking incessantly. Though a great watchdog, the breed is oftentimes suspicious of those outside of his family. He requires extensive training and early socialization in order to become the socialable, well-rounded dog that you envisioned. It is never okay to feed your dog one large bowl a day; rather, it is recommended to feed your shepherd four cups a day, divided into two meals.
