There are some simple, but important requirements to be eligible to adopt from Gold Ribbon Rescue. Please read through these pages thoroughly prior to filling out our adoption application. We are looking for safe, happy, healthy, loving, committed homes. We are looking for individuals and families who wish to make the dog a member of the family. The dog must be allowed to sleep inside and spend most of its time inside with the family. We are looking for homes with lots of love to give and time to spend with the dog. We require that you have a private fenced yard with a large enough grassy area for dog to run around and play fetch with a minimum 4' fence attached to your home. Dogs need sufficient room to exercise and play. We work hard to make good matches for the dogs and our families. We ask that you are realistic about the right dog for your lifestyle and that you trust in our experience in making these matches. Please let us know if you prefer to foster or adopt a dog. As a foster, you have the joy of serving as the loving, caring bridge to help a dog heal and prepare the dog for his or her forever family. Currently, our fosters do not have the option to adopt the dog. If approved to adopt, your matchmaker will discuss the best options for you. FPA means that an approved family who desires to adopt a dog from GRR will take the new dog in as a foster with the intent to adopt, as long as the dog ends up being the right fit. FPA families are assigned to a matchmaker and they work closely together to determine the dog that is deemed as the best fit for the dog and the family, just the same as if the approved family only desired to do a straight adoption. The FPA family will be the foster on record and is expected to abide by all of the same requirements of GRR approved foster families. The only difference is the FPA family may adopt their dog when the dog is medically cleared. Potential foster and adoptive families must agree to the following: The family has not adopted, fostered or otherwise acquired a new dog within the past six months and does not plan to do so within the next six months. The family does not have any children under the age of 8 years old and agrees to take appropriate measures to never allow children to be unsupervised with the adopted dog. This may also apply to families that have children under the age of 8 years old that regularly visit them, depending on the situation. Because most of our dogs come to us with unproven histories or issues with children, this policy is for the safety of both the child and the dog. GRR reserves the right to deny any applicant who: does not have a private attached fence or an appropriate yard for a medium or large size dog does have a type of fence that may be unacceptable for the dog On rare occasions, exceptions can be made if we have a dog GRR deems appropriate for the situation. The family agrees to keep the dog on leash anytime he or she is outside an enclosed fenced-in area. The family does not have any unaltered dogs in the home unless for a medical reason verified by a licensed veterinarian. The family will keep the adopted dog inside the home anytime the family is sleeping or away from home. Places such as, but not limited to, screened-in porches and garages even if air conditioned are unacceptable. Dog houses and kennels on the property may be deemed unacceptable and will require further explanation. The family agrees to keep the dog as an indoor house pet and will not allow the dog to have access to the outside of the home or garage when an adult is not at home. This includes closing access to a dog door to prevent the dog from being able to go outside the home when the adults are gone. The family does not use aversive training methods such as shock collars, choke chains, prong collars or excessive use of force. GRR supports the use of science-based positive reinforcement training. Dog training is an unregulated industry and there are many practices that can be harmful to your relationship with your new companion. If you need recommendations for trainers in your area, we are happy to help. When being transported, the family agrees that the dog will always ride inside an enclosed vehicle and never in an open truck bed, whether contained in a crate, loose or tethered. The dog will not be placed in the home as service dog for physical, mobility or psychological needs. Resident dogs or recently passed in the home are required to be altered, up to date on all core vaccines, have received annual health exams and heartworm tests, and have received year-round heartworm preventatives. Cats should be altered and up to date on their rabies vaccination, or as recommended by the veterinarian. When applicable, we will request at least a three-year vetting history. We also acknowledge there might be exceptions due to the frailty of senior pets or for certain medical conditions and treatment plans. If the applicant lives outside the area where we have a trained volunteer to do an in-person visit at the home, please understand we will not be able to complete your application. Before applying, please email adopt4 grr-tx. Most of us work which means we must leave our dog. Crating can be a useful tool but crating a dog hours while you are gone during the day and again 8 hours at night is too much as Goldens are active dogs. Need to climb multiple steps multiple times a day. Some homes require climbing steps to an upstairs bedroom, to the front door or off the outside deck to the yard. If this is your situation, a senior dog or one with hip issues may not work best for you. It should be expected that a new rescue dog will require socializing and training and will most likely pick up on any undesirable behavior of another dog they spend a significant amount of time with. If it is determined during the home visit that the resident dog may need more training, we may ask you to do some work with your dog before we place a new dog in the home. Cats, chickens, rabbits, birds, etc in the home — some dogs will not have had any exposure to cats, chickens, rabbits and other small animals. What will be your plan for integrating a dog into your environment? For you, these changes likely mean a wait to find the perfect Golden. Gold Ribbon Rescue receives dogs weekly. Some are Golden Retrievers, and some are Golden mixes. The more specific your requirements, the more patience will be required to find the right dog for you. If you are seeking a purebred Golden, you should expect a lengthy wait. While we get puppies, we seldom get purebred puppy litters. Young, perfectly trained Goldens are even more rare. Many of the dogs we see brought into the rescue have special needs and even these have many applicants. We value all of our previous adopters, donors and interested families. However, we can only prioritize based on who is the best fit for the dog. If you want to bring a rescue Golden into your home, the rewards of adopting an adult dog, a senior dog or a special needs dog are beyond measure. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Poodle is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Standard Poodles Bloat Gastric dilatation volvulus, also known as GDV or bloat, usually occurs in dogs with deep, narrow chests. This means your Poodle is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and sometimes to the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as half an hour. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes up , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. Preventive surgery in which the stomach is tacked down or sutured in place so that it is unlikely to twist is an option. If you see symptoms, take your pet to an emergency hospital immediately! Heart Disease Standard Poodles are especially prone to a life-threatening heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in which the heart becomes so large, thin, and weak that it can no longer effectively pump blood to the body. As this problem advances, he may act weak or tired, faint or collapse, breathe in a labored way, or cough. Unfortunately, Standard Poodles can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! Glaucoma, an eye condition that affects Standard Poodles and people too, is an extremely painful disease that rapidly leads to blindness if left untreated. Pain is rarely noticed by pet owners though it is frequently there and can be severe. People who have certain types of glaucoma often report it feels like being stabbed in the eye with an ice pick! Glaucoma is a medical emergency. Cataracts are a common cause of blindness in older Poodles. Many dogs adjust well to losing their vision and get along just fine. Surgery to remove cataracts and restore sight may also be an option. Left untreated, hypoadrenocorticism can be fatal. Symptoms often mimic many other diseases, but we can run a specialized blood test to check for this specific condition. Though this disease can occur in any type of dog, Poodles are more at risk. This is a common problem in dogs, and your Poodle is more likely than other dogs to be affected. The condition usually develops slowly, and the early signs are easily missed. Symptoms include drinking and urinating more than normal, increased appetite, and reduced activity level followed later by a potbelly, thin skin, and hair loss. Treatment usually includes oral medications and requires close coordination with us to ensure correct dosing. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders that occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Standard Poodles are particularly prone to some relatively rare diseases of the blood. If the immune system destroys red blood cells, your dog quickly becomes anemic, weak, and lethargic. His gums will look whitish or yellow instead of a normal bright pink color. Sometimes an emergency transfusion of red blood cells or platelets is needed. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Standard Poodles. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. This is called patellar luxation. You might notice that your pet, while running, suddenly picks up a back leg or skips and hops for a few strides. He might then kick his leg out sideways to pop the kneecap back in place. These are common signs of patellar luxation. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from luxating further. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. If your friend is prone to seizures, episodes will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and efficacy. Note the length of the seizure, and call us or an emergency hospital. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Poodles have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars in their bodies and require daily insulin injections. Diabetes is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well-regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Allergies In humans, allergies to pollen, mold, or dust make people sneeze. In dogs, rather than sneezing, allergies make their skin itchy. The feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most commonly affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs or allergies. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for these conditions. Skin Conditions Poodles are prone to a variety of skin problems, including sebaceous adenitis. You may notice that your dog has dry, scaly skin with patches of hair loss along the top of his head, back of the neck, and along his back. This condition typically develops when your dog is between one and five years of age. The earlier the skin is checked out, the better the results. Early detection leads to a happier pet and an easier, more affordable treatment plan. We may also recommend a special diet as part of his therapy. Cancer Cancer is a leading cause of death in older dogs. Your Poodle will likely live longer than many other breeds and therefore is more prone to get cancer in his golden years. Many cancers are curable by surgical removal, and some types are treatable with chemotherapy. Early detection is critical! I've had numerous Golden Retrievers in my training classes over the years, whether they be reds, English Cremes or the beautiful blonde that we so typically think of when we think of a Golden Retriever. We get asked which size collar would be best for a particular dog breed or types. So here we have compiled a list of dog breeds and their usual neck measurements - and recommended collars. Hindquarters dog collars are available in sizes from XS to Large. XS dog collars fit necks between 18 and 30cm or inches. Small collars fit cm or inches. Medium between cm. And Large dog collars are cm. Airedale: cm inches - we would recommend a comfy Hindquarters large size green or brown fabric cotton dog collar. Brighter colours, like a red dog collar , would work well too. Basset Hound: cm inches - we would recommend a Hindquarters large size brown or khaki soft cotton fabric dog collar. Beagle: cm inches - we would advise a medium sized dog collar in strong but soft and comfy cotton fabric weave, bright colours like red and purple work well. Bichon Frise: cm inches - a small size comfy dog collar would probably be best, perhaps red or blue. Or a small size adjustable harness. Border Collie: cm inches - an adjustable medium size comfy cotton collar would work well, perhaps black or grey. Border Terrier: cm inches - we advise a small size collar made from strong but soft cotton fabric weave, bright purple would work well or khaki for a muted look. We recommend you measure your dog's neck before ordering a Hindquarters dog collar. How do you measure your dog's neck? It is best to measure the circumference of your dog's lower neck - allowing space for a couple of fingers - to ensure a comfy fit. There are two easy ways to get your pet's neck measurement size: Measure your pet's existing collar length. The best kind of collar allows you to fit two fingers between your dog's neck and collar. Lay your pet's existing collar flat and measure it in inches. If you don't have a measuring tape or ruler, try using a measuring app on your phone. If you have a printer you can also print out a ruler. Loosely measure circumference of your pet's neck using a cloth measuring tape, in inches, around roughly where a collar would normally sit. If you don't have a cloth measuring tape, you can use any kind of string or ribbon, then measure its length after marking where the buckle should be. To make sure the collar isn't too tight you should add one to three inches to this measurement to find the correct collar size. Dog Collar Sizing Chart by Weight Weight will give you a basic idea of where to start when looking for the correct collar sizing for your dog. True measurements can vary between dogs based on neck size on their weight distribution. To get a truly accurate measurement we always recommend that you measure your dog's neck using a cloth measuring tape. Dog Breed Neck Size Guide Certain breeds may span between multiple collar sizes depending on their weight and size. When it comes to puppies, particularly short-haired breeds, you should look for a soft collar made of a non-abrasive material. Fabric collars are a good option, and collars made from a breathable fabric that is also machine washable are even better. When should a puppy wear a collar? Even if your puppy is still too young to go outside for walks, getting them used to wearing a collar is a good idea and will prevent any tiny tantrums further down the road! Collars should be worn most of the time, even around the house, but taking it off every so often to let the skin breathe is recommended. Try leaving the collar off for a couple of hours every time you brush or bathe them. Can an 8-week-old puppy wear a collar? Responsible breeders recommend puppies should not be brought home until 8 weeks old, and you can start getting them used to their collar shortly after this. It may be a good idea to let them settle into their new environment before introducing something new, but getting them used to their collar in their second week at home is a good idea. Should puppies wear collars at night? Most dog collars are designed to be non-abrasive, and perfectly safe for pups and older dogs to sleep in.
