merle bulldog puppies
However, there are several statements we can make about what you can expect as a pet owner, based on their shared traits to help you make an informed choice about bringing a Pug Shiba into your home. Both breeds are active and will do best in households that can match their energy levels. That means regular walks and playtime. Both Pugs and Shiba Inus shed, making weekly grooming essential. While they are generally healthy, the Pugs are prone to several genetic conditions, both serious and minor. Each one brings challenges to training. That means early socialization is imperative for a well-behaved pet. On the positive side, they are devoted to their families and willing to share their love lavishly. The Shiba Inu is native to Japan. The Shiba Inu, with its fox-like appearance, is one of six breeds of three size classes that are native to Japan. It is the only one in the small group. Its name, Shiba, means brushwood, a nod to its early purpose as a hunting dog. The Shiba Inu nearly became extinct. World War II was disastrous for the world. The tough character of this feisty breed certainly helped. A military family stationed in Japan brought their dog back to the United States, giving the Shiba Inu a fresh start. The Pug lived the good life from the beginning. Their storied life was one of luxury and pampering for these devoted companions. Traders brought this cute canine to the Netherlands and eventually to England. There, Queen Victoria fell in love with them, continuing the royal tradition. Positive reinforcement is the best way to encourage good manners and obedience. But the Pug and Shiba Inu are active dogs and quite intelligent. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Both also have a charming side to them that will win everyone over, enthusiastically. The Pug side of the hybrid is the more kid-friendly of the two. The Shiba Inu has the potential to be nippy. The Pug is more open to other dogs or pets in the home than the Shiba Inu. The latter also has a stronger sense of protectiveness over his toys and food. He has a greater prey drive, due to his hunting history. He may chase children or cats that run from him. The Shiba Inu also has a keen sense of wanderlust. The other thing to bear in mind is that you are dealing with a smaller dog. With a faster metabolism, hypoglycemia , or low blood sugar is a risk. If his blood levels drop too low, your puppy will become lethargic. To keep them stable, you should feed him small meals three times a day. You can cut back to two times per day. The Pug side of your pup is prone to weight gain. The Pug in him is playful by nature. The Shiba Inu is an active dog, anyway. The important thing is to engage your pet and encourage this active behavior to keep him healthy, both physically and mentally. However, because of his protective nature, keep your Pug Shiba on a leash. Both are intelligent. That makes this hybrid relatively easy to train. The nippy potential, along with a tendency to bark, are two challenges that you may face. Getting control of these undesirable behaviors early will go a long way toward a more rewarding pet-pet owner relationship. Overall, grooming is easy. Because of the risk of allergies, you should examine his coat occasionally. Pug Shibas generally have healthy coats with only routine grooming necessary. Unfortunately, overbreeding has increased the prevalence of some of them, especially in Pugs. We recommend buying from breeders who take the precaution of some health screenings such as OFA Certifications for hip and elbows. Minor Conditions. Purebreds are brought together for a night of hot passion and the result is a brand new breed. If you like Pugs, then the Pug Shiba is the second-best breed to the real thing. Pug Shibas get along fairly well with children and adults in the house. They do have a shedding problem, although not a major one. As the product of two contrasting parents in terms of appearance and personality, the Pug Shiba is an interesting breed to own. You could end up with a small dog with a muscular physique but has the distinct face of the Pug and the shrill yelps of that breed. So what do you need to know before you embark on a journey with this unusual companion in your home? They have the physique and looks that match their role in life. Pugs, on the other hand, are diminutive dogs with a goofy and clownish personality that makes them a delight to have around the house. So what does the offspring of such two different breeds look like? Color The dog can have all shades of red, white, or tan. Marks and Patterns The eyes would have the same black patterns that Pugs are famous for. The round and compact face has the innocence and cuteness that make Pugs a desired breed. Physique The chest is more Shiba Inu than Pug. The dog is usually chubby like a regular Pug. Ears The ears of the Pug Shiba are pointy and give it an alert and sharp look which it takes from the Shiba Inu side of the gene pool. Nose It has the same flattened snout that distinguishes the Pug dynasty. Legs This designer breed has short legs and they are quick. Lifespan The Pug Shiba has the same life expectancy as both its purebred parents. Both Shiba Inus and Pugs can live anything between 12 and 15 years. To ensure your Pug Shiba reaches this ripe old age, you need to take care of its hygiene, give it the necessary vaccinations, watch its weight, and ensure it has a healthy and varied diet as we will discuss later. Grooming Needs This is where the fun comes to an end and your responsibility as a carer for the Pug Shiba starts to take shape. For one thing, this is a dog that sheds, like a lot. It also needs constant care in terms of appearance and hygiene. Shedding While Pugs are not known for leaving clumps of hair around the house, the Pug Shiba is a different story. They get their plush coating from the Shiba Inu. They seem to fight off that excess hair constantly and have a tendency to shed it where you least expect it. It keeps their breath fresh and also prevents dental issues such as gum disease and rotten teeth. The nails are hotbeds for germs and dirt which the dog would spread all over the furniture and your clothes as well. Clean their ears as often as you clip their nails. Bathe only when necessary. Temperament The Pug Shiba retains the attractive features of the Pug such as alertness, hyperactivity, and tendency to fool around and desire to please. However, since mix-breeds are not always a slam dunk, you might get a dog with a quirky personality. Shiba Inus are independent dogs with an aloof personality. And your Pug Shiba might be a combination of both. The lovable clown that gets along well with kids of all ages. And the fastidious dog that makes a fuss wherever it goes and at times seems hard to please. Whichever side your dog leans to temperament-wise, depends on its parents. One thing for sure, though, your Pug Shiba is a loyal dog. Its energy and lively disposition make it a welcome addition to every home. Exercise Needs As far as exercise requirements are concerned, the Pug Shiba is not the kind of dog to put you out or force you to change your lifestyle to accommodate theirs. A short walk every day or every other day will suit the dog fine, keep its weight under check and help maintain its cheerful spirits high as always. A game of fetch in the backyard is a good way to bond and help the pup get its share of exercises. Thanks to the good genes of their purebred parents, the Pug Shiba is expected to live a long life in dog years without suffering from health conditions. Allergies are the most common problem that this breed is susceptible to. They usually pick these allergies from fleas so good hygiene is paramount if you want to spare your designer dog the misery of allergies. Eye problems such as cataracts, entropion, and glaucoma, as well as dental issues also crop up when you neglect to groom and maintain your Pug Shiba. Regular checkups are recommended with this breed as they are with many other pets. Feeding Food is another aspect of this breed that makes them appealing. Regarding what food they eat, the Pug Shiba is not fussy. It eats just about any formulated food as the next dog. As long as it has no dental issues or allergies, the pup will wolf down its bowl of food with obvious relish. Puppies are recommended to be fed formulated food until they become adults. After that, the adult dog will thrive on a diet high in animal protein. Avoid a diet packed with carbohydrates since that leads to obesity. You can give your adult Pug Shiba two meals a day but no more than that. Factor in any treats you give it and watch out for snacks. This is not a very active dog so any unburnt calories will soon show up as excess fat and give them a pudgy look. As for how much food to offer. Each meal should be around one-third of a cup. That should be enough to give the dog the needed nutrients to keep it energetic and lively throughout the day. Not in the slightest. Yes, they get along fine with everyone in the family including the unknown visitors as well. Their independent streak, if it happens to stick with them from the Shiba Inu parent, is usually not strong enough to make them repel those around them. This covers both humans and animals in the household. Pug Shibas are only too happy to share their toys with other pets. These easy-going designer dogs are extremely low-maintenance and rarely get into fights or make a mess in the house. This small designer dog is not very expensive to buy or grow. It sheds moderately but it can still be a mess. Lifestyle Needs: This is not the right companion for the hunter or hiker. This dog is happier on the rug than out in the woods. That makes the hybrid automatically averse to hot climates. They get warm easily and start panting. The Attention a Shiba Inu Pug Mix Needs As a homey dog that prefers the company of others over being alone, this is a dog that craves attention and rewards you with abundant love and gratitude. That said, the Pug Shiba will make do with just about any companion. If your job demands that you leave your peg dog at home for long hours, having another pet in the house will make it much easier for the hybrid to while the time away as it waits for your imminent return. Also leaving a few toys lying around will keep it busy for hours. Compatibility with Kids Of all the dog species that you can think of, the Pug Shiba is one of the best companions for children of all ages. Ranked high along with Golden Retrievers , the Pug Shiba is fun to have around kids. Its small size and moderate temperament along with its goofy nature delight children and adults alike. You can leave it with a toddler or a child that can barely walk without worrying about them in the least. This is a dog that makes friends easily and loves to have humans around no matter what their age. You also have nothing to worry about health-wise. Compatibility with Other Animals The magnanimous nature of the Pug Shiba extends to other pets in the house as well. The only thing you have to worry about is to keep it safe from other less friendly animals. Because the Pug Shiba is prone to making a fool out of itself, it can rub other animals the wrong way. One or more of them must be taking advantage of the easy nature of the Shiba Pug. I hope you found it helpful as you raise your pet. For dogs, flea and tick infestation is deadly and may cause severe diseases if not treated regularly. Free Shipping on all orders at discounted prices. Click here to join risk-free. Loyal, intelligent and independent, Shiba Inus are one of the most popular Asian breeds of dog. Originally from Japan, these cat-like canines are enigmatic and autonomous, well loved all over the world for their unique personalities and vulpine charm. Pugs are pretty much the opposite. Some Shiba Inu Pug mixes will have the exuberant and fun loving temperament of the Pug, while others will align more with the reserved and dignified Shiba Inu. Due to the the stark physical differences of these two breeds, it is rather unlikely that a Shiba Inu and a Pug would be bred together purposefully. For the most part, Shiba Inu Pugs are spunky, intelligent dogs that will be a loyal companion. Shiba Inu Pug mixes are friendly but not overly needy and intelligent without being standoffish. Taking into consideration the size of each individual breed, Shiba Inu Pug mixes will be between inches tall at the withers and will weigh between pounds. While some puppies may have the short, flat Pug nose or the elongated and fox-like snout of the Shiba, most Shiba Inu Pug mix puppies will fall somewhere in the middle. Although Shiba Inu Pug mixes have the signature curled tail of both the Pug and the Shiba, their coloring will vary depending on the colors of the parents. While Pugs come in only two varieties, black and fawn, Shiba Inu coloring is much more varied. Shiba Inus can be red, black and tan, sesame and cream colored. Other than that, Shiba Inu Pug mixes can vary greatly depending on the color of the Shiba parent. A rather colloquial description - but it does the job. Shiba Inu Pug mixes are medium-sized, curly-tailed, and have rounded snouts with button ears most Shiba Inu Pug mixes will not retain the triangular, fox-like ears of a purebred Shiba Inu. I found shiba inu pug mix omg thats so weird pic. Many Pug health problems stem from the flat shape of their face, which inhibits breathing and limits the amount of exercise they can handle, which may lead to obesity. When mixed with the longer-nosed Shiba Inu, many of these health issues are resolved, creating a happier, healthier dog. Both breeds are susceptible to ocular problems, and Shiba Inu Pug mixes are prone to watery eyes and redness in the eyes. They also may be prone to suffering from allergies, both food and environmental, and some trial and error may be needed to determine what the Shiba Inu Pug mix is allergic to. Shiba Inu Pug mixes are also at risk for a patellar luxation, which is when the knee cap slides in and out of the femur. Patellar luxation can be mild or very serious and is often characterized by limping especially after physical activity. Because both Shiba Inus and Pugs do very well in apartments, Shiba Inu Pug mixes are very adaptable and, as long as they are taken out for adequate walks, can thrive pretty much anywhere. While the subsequent offspring may dilute the characteristics of each breed, resulting in less independent Shibas and more serious Pugs, the appeal of each individual breed lies in their contrasting personalities. Pugs are beloved because they are fun, silly, and lovable, while Shibas are popular with an entirely different type of dog owner, one who wants a more independent, cat-like breed. Because the breeds suffer from a variety of similar health ailments, there is always the possibility that a Shiba Inu Pug mix may suffer from all of them! In general, purebred dogs bred by reputable breeders are subject to a vast array of health testing before they are bred. We do our very best in providing our readers with awesome content about our beloved Shiba Inu breed. Some of our articles include reviews and recommendations to our favorite products. We do earn commissions from affiliate links that help support our work and mission. Thanks again for visiting. Shiba Kisses To All! The crossbreed weighs between 16 and 24 pounds and is 14 to 16 inches tall. The puppies differ a lot. Besides, the color of the crossbreed is often close or similar to either or both of the parents. The Pug Shiba can either have a short, flat Pug-like nose or an elongated foxlike nose like that of a Shiba Inus. Most of these crossbreeds fall anywhere in-between the two parent breeds. The crossbreed can either assume any of Pug colors, including fawn and black, or the Shiba colors, which include black and tan, cream, red, or sesame. Notably, if the Pug parent comes from the fawn Pug family, the resultant Shiba Inu Pug mix puppy is likelier to have a black facemask. This is a dominant genetic trait in the fawn Pug. One common thing in most Shiba Inu Pug mixes is the stretched-out appearance. The crossbreed often looks like a stretched Pug. In short, the Shiba Inu Pug mix is medium size, with a strong straight tail that hardly curls over the back like that of a Shiba Inu. The crossbreed has a rounded snout and button-like ears. So, while some of these crossbreed dogs are fun and have the exuberance of a Pug, others are more reserved and dignified, like the Shiba Inu parent. The two parent breeds have stark differences. This makes it rather unlikely that any breeder would intentionally think of crossbreeding these two breeds. They often present a frankly unusual mix of two special breeds. Of importance, the crossbreed is a perfect companion. The mix is lively, likes playing around, is alert and thus can be a good watchdog. The crossbreed is loyal to the owner and immediate family. However, the initial moments after getting this crossbreed are challenging since the crossbreed may be somewhat aloof with new family members. Thankfully, after some time, the cross gets along with strangers. They easily become playful with new people in the family; however, this might take some time for socialization. While Shiba Inus hardly cuddle , this crossbreed is charming and adorable with high intelligence and likes playing on your lap. Mind stimulation prevents destructive behavior in your pooch friend. The next thing they think about is destructive chewing whenever boredom kicks in. Also, separation anxiety kicks in easily. The Pug Shiba is loving, especially to family members. This crossbreed likes going for brisk morning and evening walks. Besides, this exercise helps wear out your canine friend, and, as we all know, a tired dog is a good dog. Of course, start training and socialization early enough. Starting both early improves the chances of your canine friend coping up better and learning to be around people and dogs. Notably, never over-exert your Pug Shiba as it might lead to shortness of breath. Excess exertion might cause cardiac arrest. As you exercise or go for a walk, carry a small bottle of water. Thankfully, this crossbreed needs minimal care tips. This adorable crossbreed is full of love and will always keep you happy. So, you must be ready for extremely long walks. You should do walks of up to 60 minutes at a go. Unlike Shiba Inus, this cross has a moderate energy level in most cases. So, the cross has to exercise regularly. Otherwise, you risk making your mix destructive with a lack of exercise. Give enough exercise and do some positive reinforcement during the walks. That way, you use the exercise time to train your dog on some commands. As we all know, a tired dog is a good dog. So, either go for walks or hikes for at least 45 minutes. You can observe when they start serious panting to know when to stop the exercise. Grooming Needs The crossbreed between these two dogs gives a shedding dog. However, this depends on the individual mix. Some may be more like Shibas and thus shed a lot. So, ensure to have the right brush to prevent the matting of hair. You can brush your pooch friend several times a week. Also, you should invest in a vacuum cleaner. It helps keep your floor clean and free from tumbleweeds of fur. Both a vacuum cleaner and brush are a must-own. Also, bathe your canine friend every 3 to 6 weeks. A lot of baths wash away essential oils to expose the skin. Training Requirements Training is crucial for every other dog. Besides, the Shiba Inu Pug mix is an intelligent breed despite having some degree of stubbornness. Similarly, consistency is vital not to let your dog take advantage of you. Positive reinforcement is essential for this crossbreed. That said, ensure to use praises when your crossbreed does well. They love to impress and will do more of what impresses them. That said, the more you exercise your dog, the easier it becomes to train. As you exercise your dog, you bond with them and gain their trust. So, they can easily follow your commands. Socialization Needs You must start socialization from an early age. This includes socializing your Shiba Inu Pug mix with kids, people, and other pets. So, you may want to make frequent visits to the dog park. That is a good way to socialize your canine friend. Also, socialize your pooch friend with people. That way, you let your crossbreed tour the world through you. In addition, the dog becomes more social the more they meet new people and interact with other dogs. Feeding Requirements You must feed your crossbreed high-quality food. Using good food has numerous benefits for your pet. For example, you can buy more time to have your pooch friend with you by feeding them high-quality food. Healthy food is good for longer life. Also, ensure to do a trial and error to determine what your mix loves. Also, ensure to determine what they may be allergic to. You should avoid overfeeding your canine friend. Some health problems due to being overweight include elbow and hip dysplasia. Also, you may want to look into some raw diets that suit your dog. With the Wolf background in Shibas, a raw diet can make a good choice. However, there are some complications the breed is prone to, including; Cataracts: This health condition affects the eyes. Allergies: This crossbreed is prone to both food and skin allergies. Common causes of allergies are mold spores, pollen, and some types of proteins. Patellar Luxation: This condition involves the dislocation of the kneecaps. The treatment usually involves surgery. Glaucoma: This is an eye complication that results from high fluid pressure inside the eye. It often causes blindness and has no treatment. Hip Dysplasia: This is a joint problem where the hind socket joints dislodge from their normal position. So, they keep rubbing together, causing pain and mobility issues. Shiba Inus are good, with every other dog breed ready to submit and recognize them as the pack leader. So, other dogs that fail to submit might not relate well with Shiba Inus. Thankfully, you can socialize and train your Shiba Inu to relate well with other canine friends. Shiba Inu Pug mix has a lifespan of 12 and 15 years. However, it can go past this depending on the quality of food you feed your pooch friend. Almost all dogs have a similar lifespan. However, high-quality food and care are necessary for a longer lifespan. So, feed your canine friend high-quality food to prolong their time on earth by keeping them in good health. Nevertheless, you must train your kids how to handle the breed. Otherwise, the cross can become aggressive under provocation. Also, socializing them together in your presence helps your pooch friend interact with kids peacefully. However, it has its quirks as well, such as being independent. Depending on the parent breeds, the crossbreed might have some aggression issues. To counter them, ensure to train and socialize your canine friend from an early age. Thankfully, the crossbreed is friendly to the owner and immediate family. They will enjoy short walks and regular trips to a nearby dog park. They enjoy playing with interactive dog toys that help to stimulate their mind. You should remember that the Pug parent is prone to brachycephalic syndrome, which occurs in dogs with short snouts. Overexertion can cause breathing difficulties and even cardiac arrest. Give your dog fresh water when exercising them to prevent overexertion and overheating. The most important thing is to exercise your dog regularly and encourage them to stay active and healthy. Overall, these dogs require 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. This makes the Pug Shiba quite easy to train. You need to exercise patience when housetraining your dog since this hybrid can inherit the independence of their Shiba Inu parent. Here are some tips for properly training your Shiba Inu Mixed with Pug: Start training your Pug Shiba early: early training will allow your pup to learn acceptable behavior at a young age and prevent aggressive behaviors in the future. Use positive reinforcements: even though this dog can be willful, avoid using extreme training methods. Use positive reinforcements to get your Shiba Inu Pug Mix puppy to behave. These intelligent dogs will appreciate treats, praise, and other positive reinforcements. You need to socialize your dog as early as possible. Puppy socialization can be a great way to reduce aggression, fear, and anxiety in dogs. The Shiba Inu Pug Mix sheds a lot throughout the year. While many breeds shed seasonally, Pug Shiba dogs lose their hair throughout the year. Therefore, it is important to groom your dog regularly. Neither the Pug nor the Shiba Inu is hypoallergenic. Therefore, the Pug Shiba is also not a hypoallergenic dog. Shedding is frequent, as both the parents are known to shed frequently. So you can check with the vet to count on health care tactics that prevent or manage extra shedding. He will require a decent daily physical activity to stay fit! Add a variation by allowing him to play with your kids. The Pug Shiba, unlike the Shiba Inu , loves to mix socially and play with kids and adults alike. He is the perfect family pet. Shiba Inu is one of the rare breeds of dogs, and the hybrid Pug Shiba too is scarce. Physically this dog is healthy and sturdy for his frame. The look Physically the Pug Shiba looks cute and adorable. The appearance is pleasant. However, the precise color depends hugely on the dominant breed of his parents. A couple of hybrids might happen with the conventional Pug black marks close to the nose, eyes, and mouth. Akin to the pug, he might have the curly pug tail! The dog comes with a deep and broad chest. At times, the Pug Shiba might be slightly chubby. The pointed Shiba Inu ears might be visible in some hybrids as well. When it comes to the fur, then he will have it lighter than his Shiba Inu. The legs are short. Some of the minor health concerns are dry eye and minor allergies, which goes off with a primary dog health care. The brushes you need to use Since the Pug Shiba would be prone to shedding, using the correct brush and other accessories is essential. The pin brush is perfect for his delicate body. There are many types of pin brushes available in the market. Choose the one that has medium-firm bristles for better results. Your daily brushing frequency needs to be more. That will address and resolve the shedding concern to some extent. The only maintenance that you need to be careful about is that of brushing daily, as the dog has a frequent tendency to shed. You can use natural oils as you clean him. It will make the coat healthy and very shiny. Also, make sure you brush his teeth for a couple of times a week. It will prevent the tartar buildup. And when you take time to brush his teeth, it will keep tooth decay at bay. Trim the mails every three weeks or monthly as required. Both breaks and tears might be painful. Usually, your Shiba hybrid will be healthy and free from most diseases barring the occasional allergies and weaknesses. However, as a dog owner, you need to be aware of the diseases that are prevalent within this breed. I will name the common ailments to include:.

For older dogs we only schedule a meet and greet with approved applicants, and then only if the animal is already in state. We do NOT allow meet and greets with other dogs at ANY time, as 5 minutes in a driveway will not tell how animals will react after proper decompression practices are followed. If a slower adjustment period is needed, we are happy to extend the return policy to ensure proper introductions, we just ask to be kept informed of the process to offer help along the way. We also do not allow sibling adoptions. There are many articles on the internet that fully explain this occurrance. Please contact us directly through email or messenger for any questions! Please see the Foster Page and Application for further details, contact us with questions! This may not apply to puppies that were not old enough at time of transport to be tested or given all shots. BBTB is not responsible for other diseases or issues that may arise after the quarantine period, as we have no way of foreseeing or controlling those situations. All animals are also treated topically for fleas and ticks, but please keep in mind that it can take up to three weeks to take care of any issues that may be present. In the case of puppies, we may not have been able to treat them due to age. We do our best to prevent the spread of fleas and ticks. Also, in the case of puppies, most under the age of 6 months are likely to have parasites, despite being dewormed. It takes regular deworming to eliminate parasites, so the adopter should plan on getting a fecal test done shortly after adoption to see if there are lasting parasites. As for older dogs, they are required to have a fecal test before transport, but they may need another round of testing and dewormer as well, depending on the life cycle of the eggs, as the test only detects active parasites, so it may take another dose to dispel them all. It is the responsibility of the adopter to provide this care and respective treatment if necessary. The State of Maine requires that all animals being imported into the state be quarantined for the following periods before they can be formally adopted: Animals 6 months and older 48 hours, under 6 months must be quarantined for 5 days. Once the quarantine period has passed, as long as there has been no sign of any issues, then the adoption can proceed. The final paperwork showing transfer of ownership will be sent to the adoptive family generally within two weeks after final adoption. In the case of puppies that need to be neutered or spayed, if the dog requires boosters or there is a time sensitive issue the paperwork will be sent to the adopters beforehand, otherwise it will be sent within two weeks after the procedure has been completed. The records are emailed directly to the address on file. Hard copies are only sent upon request. They are usually sent within two weeks but may take up to that amount of time. If you are adopting an animal that has not yet been altered, you will also be required to bring the animal to the Gray Animal Center at 55 Portland Rd in Gray ME at the date and time you are given by the rescue. Blessed Be the Bullies determines when the animals will be altered according to information provided by our veterinarian. If the adopter does not abide by this policy and does not bring the animal to GAC at the time set, we reserve the right to take possession of the animal with no return of funds paid. Should it be necessary for the rescue to regain possession of the animal, the adopter will be liable for any expenses incurred by these actions, included but not limited to fuel costs, boarding fees, or any civil or legal fees that may be created by such actions. We do not pay for an animal to be microchipped anywhere else. Animals need adequate time to adjust to new living situations, and behaviors can change from day to day. Payment is due in full before the animal will be released to the adopter. Electronic payments must be made at least 24 hours before pick up, cash may be paid the same day. Please read below for details on payment policies, as depending on the situation, different policies may prevail. For dogs that are located in state already, the balance of the adoption fee must be paid before pickup. PIck up is generally scheduled within 24 hours of commitment. The deposit will be applied to the total for the animal adopted. For dogs that are located out of state, the balance of the adoption fee must be paid before pickup, however the adopter may wait until transport has been arranged. We try to have this done asap, but must coordinate with our transport companies, so this timing is out of our control. If the adopter decides not to proceed with the adoption, the deposit is non refundable. Depending on the situation, it may be applied to a different animal. The return of the adoption fee may take up to two weeks to process. It will be returned in the same way in which it was paid. Should the animal be injured in any way, the entire adoption fee is forfeit, and depending on the level of injury the adopter may be liable for vet costs incurred. If within 7 days after the date the adopter takes possession of the animal, if it is decided that the animal is not a good fit, the adopter MUST contact the rescue to make arrangements to surrender their animal. Do NOT drop off an animal unannounced please. The rescue must be given adequate time to find a place for the animal to be transferred to. If the return occurs after 7 days, there will be no refunds issued. Blessed Be the Bullies retains the right to determine whether the adopter will be allowed to transfer funds to another animal. Should the adopter and the rescue feel that the animal needs more time to adjust, the 7-day policy may be extended. This is at the sole discretion of the rescue. The availability of an animal is not guaranteed, we often have many applications for the same animal, and timing can depend on how quickly the application might be approved. We do our best to update our website as soon as animals are adopted, however, the presence of an animal on the website does not guarantee adoption. Please contact the rescue with any questions about a specific animal. Processing time for an application depends on how quickly responses from references are received. We do our best to get quick results but suggest that references are notified to expect contact. No animal will be released to anyone outside of our organization until all references have been checked and the applicants have been approved, and the full adoption fee has been received. We do not offer a payment plan. We accept PayPal or cash. We do not accept checks. Other than cash, all payments must be made in full, and the final contract must be filled out and submitted before the animal will be released to the adopter. Please note, even if an applicant has been approved, this does NOT guarantee adoption. Adoption will occur at the sole discretion of BBTB, and they reserve the right to deny an applicant at ANY time during the process before the placement is complete. If an adopter is unable to pick up the animal on the day they are scheduled to, they need to contact the rescue to see if boarding is available. If the animal being adopted is already located in state, pick up is generally scheduled within 24 hours of the adoption being finalized. Even if the adopter knows where the animal is located, the rescue will make the pick-up arrangements. If the adopter is unwilling to pay the boarding fee, the animal will be made available for adoption by someone else, and the deposit fee will be forfeit for that animal. It is up to the discretion of Blessed Be the Bullies as to whether the adopter will be allowed to use the deposit for an alternate adoption. The deposit will not be refunded under any circumstances. We try our best to communicate clearly when animals will be available for pick-up, but we must work within the schedule of the transport companies and the quarantine periods. This is out of our control. Please keep in mind these animals have already been through so much, the best thing for them is to just be able to go straight home! If it is determined that the decompression policy available at all times on the website was not followed, or that the animal needs veterinary attention there will be NO refund of any kind given. After 7 seven days there will be no refunds given no matter the circumstances. Since we are primarily a bully breed rescue, there is a good chance they may have some of that breed. We supply the information we are given at the time the animals are listed on Facebook, our website and other animal adoption sites, however it should be noted that this information is purely an estimate. This also applies to the ages of most animals. If there are questions, please contact the rescue before applying! At any time during the lifetime of the animal the adopter decides that they cannot keep their pet, they must consult with the rescue before taking the animal to a shelter, giving the animal away or having the animal euthanized. This rescue makes a commitment to every animal they adopt out that they will be safe in an approved situation. We understand that situations arrive that may be out of the adopters control, and we will do our best to help with any issues if we are able to. If the adopter has someone else willing to take the animal, the new potential adopters need to go through our application process first before the dog is released into anyone elses care. Should this policy not be followed, the rescue reserves the right to reacquire ownership of said animal though legal channels if necessary, with the original applicant being responsible for any and all such costs incurred. He can be a police or military K9, a search and rescue dog, and a service dog. In addition, the GSD makes an excellent active family companion. Shepherds do require a lot of exercise and consistent training to meet their fullest potential, but they are definitely worth the work! Care, Grooming, and Health German Shepherds stand between 22 and 26 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds. Their coats come in two types, the usual normal coat that is medium-length and relatively course, or a long, soft coat that is much denser and feels more like the fur of a Collie. They are always supposed to be longer than they are tall. The GSD is also known for a smooth, effortless trot. They need daily brushing to keep them looking their best, especially the long-coated variety, but should only be bathed every six weeks or so. As with any breed, nails should be trimmed at least every four weeks, and teeth should be brushed at least once a week for optimal dental health and fresh breath. GSDs are beautiful, intelligent dogs, but unscrupulous over-breeding has resulted in an increase in health issues for this breed. They can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, which is typical of almost all popular dog breeds. Again, there is a genetic test for this disorder, so ask your breeder to see the results before choosing a puppy. Allergies are becoming increasingly problematic for the German Shepherd, so be sure to ask your breeder about this as well. Because GSDs are bred to be protective, they must be socialized early and often in order to help prevent undue suspicion or anxiety. Also, German Shepherds must be taught how to be left alone from a young age in order to minimize separation anxiety, which can be a problem in the breed. A well-bred German Shepherd is very intelligent and highly trainable. They should start training as soon as soon as possible to help them become happy household members. Consistency is very important with this breed. They are happiest when they have a purpose. This can be anything from participating in a dog sport to having a job like service work. Even learning tricks will help your Shepherd feel needed. German Shepherds generally need daily exercise. They love long walks, hiking, playing fetch, or just about anything active. GSDs excel in a lot of different dog sports, including obedience, rally, agility, and tracking. They have also been used as guide and service dogs for people with disabilities, search and rescue dogs, and of course police work. German Shepherd History As his name suggests, the German Shepherd was created in Germany during the late 19th century, primarily by a German military captain who wanted to develop an all-purpose working dog. The result was a herding dog with striking good looks, intelligence, and versatility. These adaptable dogs soon attracted the attention of dog-lovers throughout the world. German Christmas Traditions German families begin Christmas preparations throughout the month of December. Four Sundays prior to the big day, they make an Advent wreath out of either fir or pine branches with four colored candles. Baking Christmas cookies, especially gingerbread, is a popular holiday pastime in Germany, just as in the United States. Christmas cakes and special spiced breads are also popular. On Christmas Eve, families spend time celebrating together and eating a Christmas feast featuring roast goose, turkey, or duck. Gifts are a big deal in Germany, just as with any other country. Ideal gifts for a German Shepherd include puzzle toys, balls, or frisbees. Squeaky toys are also popular with these active, playful dogs! Most of us know that the concept for the Christmas tree originated in Germany. Typical decorations include live candles or strings of lights, as well as a variety of intricate ornaments, many of which are heirloom pieces. Homemade chocolate, decorated cookies, and other Christmas candies may also appear on the tree. Wooden Christmas angels are another really popular German decoration. These beautifully carved figurines depict angels in an array of poses, often playing musical instruments. Since GSDs are working dogs, they have a great need for mental stimulation. This dog brick puzzle toy will help stimulate their minds and stave off boredom when indoors. There are three different ways to play it, and you can control difficulty by adding or removing bricks. The ball itself is durable and has plenty of short, gentle spikes for gripping as well as teeth cleaning. But the strong braided nylon rope is really what makes it special. Though reasonably priced, these toys are made of durable rope guaranteed to have no harmful plastic parts or chemicals. Plus, they come in neutral tones. The two ropes are different from each other to offer varied play options. Either way, these two will elevate interactive play with your German Shepherd to a whole new level.

Some breeders may charge more than others, and the price may also depend on the bloodlines of the puppies. Generally speaking, GSD puppies from good bloodlines will be more expensive than those from mediocre bloodlines. A low-quality dog could end up costing you more in the long run due to health problems or behavioral issues. The price will vary mostly because of the bloodlines of the parents. Dogs with champion bloodlines will be more expensive because those bloodlines have been proven to produce healthy and sound puppies. There are many different ways to determine if a breeder is responsible and cares about the health of their dogs, including: A good place to start searching for breeders in your area is on local Facebook groups or by looking up German shepherds in your Yellow Pages directory. Make sure you ask lots of questions and get to know the breeder and their dogs before you make a purchase. One of the best ways to find a responsible German shepherd breeder is to visit dog shows in your area. Be wary of breeders who are only interested in selling puppies; good breeders will want to ensure that their puppies are going to good homes. If the breeder has a kennel-style facility, be sure to ask to see where the puppies are kept. They should be clean and healthy, with plenty of space to run around. Avoid breeders who keep their dogs in cages or small spaces; this is not healthy for the animals. The best way to determine if a breeder is responsible is to meet their dogs. Ask to see the mother of the puppies, as well as any other dogs that are living at the premises. Puppy mills are becoming increasingly common, so be sure to avoid breeders who only seem interested in making a sale. Responsible breeders will want to ensure that their puppies are going to good homes, and they will be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed. Good breeders will be happy to provide you with contact information for happy customers. Be sure to ask the breeder lots of questions about the puppies, such as their health history, temperament, and what type of home they would be best suited for. A good breeder will take the time to answer all of your questions and will want to make sure that their puppies are going to a good home. References will give you the opportunity to get in touch with past customers and ask them about their experiences. This will help you determine if the German Shepherd breeder you have chosen is a good one. A good breeder will be more than happy to put you in touch with happy customers who will tell you all about their experience working with the breeder. If the breeder is reputable, you will likely find that their past customers have only good things to say about them. If a breeder is reluctant to put you in touch with past customers, or if they cannot provide references, avoid them at all costs. This is a sure sign that they are not reputable and you should never work with someone like this for any reason. When looking for a good breeder, it is also important to ask about their veterinarian. A reputable breeder will have a great relationship with their veterinarian and will be able to provide you with references. This is important because you want to make sure that your puppy is in good hands and that they are getting the best possible care. If the breeder cannot provide you with a good veterinarian, it is best to avoid them. This is another sign that they may not be reputable and may not be taking care of their animals in the best way possible. A relationship with a veterinarian is crucial as a breeder. This is because unethical breeders do not want you to know how unhygienic their breeding facilities really are. They may also fear that if you get too close, you will notice that their animals are unhealthy or malnourished. Refuses to Give Full medical History of Sire and Dam: If the breeder refuses to give you a full medical history of the sire and dam, it is likely that they are hiding something. Good breeders will always be happy to share this information with you as they want you to be aware of any health concerns that may be passed down to the puppy. Sells Puppies at Pet Stores: Puppy mills often sell their puppies to pet stores. If the breeder you are working with is selling their puppies in pet stores, it is likely that they are a puppy mill. Avoid them at all costs. Asking the right questions can help you weed out the bad breeders from the good ones. Ask if you can see where their puppies are born and raised. A breeder that is reputable will be more than happy to show you where they keep their animals. Not only does this give you peace of mind, but it also gives you very valuable insight into how your puppy was bred. All puppies have the potential to develop health problems as they grow older. If the breeder does not seem to care about the health of their animals, it is best to avoid them. A good breeder will always be willing to answer your questions. Do not hesitate to ask the Wyoming breeder any questions you may have. A good breeder will always be happy to oblige. This means having a crate ready, as well as puppy-proofing the area so that there are no accidents. Crates provide an ideal place for puppies to sleep and will help keep them safe while their owner is away at work or school. They also help with house training as puppies cannot have accidents if they are confined to the crate. Once they learn that of course. Make sure to have plenty of toys, treats and chew toys on hand. German Shepherd puppies love to chew, so make sure that there are plenty of safe options available. Another thing that you should be prepared for is the fact that your puppy will likely need to go outside quite often at first as they learn house rules. Make sure that you have a leash ready. This means that you should not get angry when they have an accident in the house. Instead, simply clean up the mess and use positive reinforcement when they do something that they are not allowed to do like going to the bathroom in the house. Crate-training can help make house training much easier for both you and your pup by confining them when there is no one around watching them. While most dogs will whine or bark when confined like this, crates become a safe haven for pets over time. If you decide to try crate training your One of the most important things that you need to do when potty training your new German Shepherd puppy is to be consistent. Always take them outside immediately after they eat, drink or play. It may also help to create a designated potty area outside where you can take them regularly. This will help your puppy associate going potty with a specific area. They are a very special breed that requires lots of love and attention. Please be sure that you have the time to give them what they need. Have Fun! I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Life Span Did You Know? A Miniature German Shepherd is a cross between a German Shepherd and a smaller dog breed that is meant to result in a smaller version of a German Shepherd. Although these Mini Shepherds can inherit any combination of traits from their parent breeds, they tend to be energetic, intelligent dogs that bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them. Miniature German Shepherds make great family dogs. They may be hardworking while on a job, but they have a playful spirit while relaxing with their family. They also tend to get along well with children and other dogs in the family. Although they tend to do well with smaller pets they have been raised with, they do have a high prey drive. Mini German Shepherds are also protective and alert. They will bark to alert you and will be naturally suspicious of strangers. Proper socialization and training early on can help make sure barking does not become a nuisance and will help them open up to strangers once introduced. Miniature German Shepherds are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to be a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. But, they can adapt just as well to apartments as long as they get the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat. Because they bond so closely with their families and want to be near them, they do not do well with long periods of alone time. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs because of genetic diversity. However, this is not a guarantee. They could inherit no conditions common to the parent breeds, but they could also inherit some or all of them. So, make sure you are asking them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. For the Miniature German Shepherd, potential health conditions to be aware of include progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Because of their body shape, they are also at risk for bloat. Although Miniature German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please, they can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle on their own. Their high energy, working dog instincts, thirst for learning, and need for structured training can be overwhelming for first-time dog owners. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended if you are not an experienced dog owner. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your dog, and also offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. In general, a Miniature German Shepherd will have a coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavier seasonally. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath is usually sufficient for this coat type. If a Miniature German Shepherd has a Mini Poodle parent, there is a chance they could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Although good dental care for dogs is essential, it is often overlooked. This is one of the reasons why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in older dogs. You can help protect your pup from painful dental diseases later in life by brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day and keeping up with regular vet visits. Although a Miniature German Shepherd may be smaller than a German Shepherd, they are still a high-energy dog with working dog instincts. In addition to having a job to do, these dogs also need daily walks plus playtime and time to run to be happy and healthy. If they like it, swimming can be a good low-impact activity while they are still growing. Once puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like hiking, running, training for dog sports, and more to see what they like. A fully-grown Miniature German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs about 50 pounds. There can be some variation depending on the other parent breed in the cross, but meeting the mother dog in-person can give you a better idea of what size to expect in a Mini GSD. A Miniature German Shepherd generally lives for years. If the other parent crossed with a German Shepherd is a Standard Poodle, the result is a Shepadoodle. Featured Miniature German Shepherd Article. History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? The double-coat, with a thick undercoat that sheds twice annually, loses hair continuously but can be maintained with regular brushing one or two times weekly. What are the German Shepherd Dog colors? Black, tan, solid black and solid sable. How long do German Shepherd Dogs live? Lifespan: 10—12 years What are some German Shepherd Dogs facts and information? The German Shepherd held the number one spot in American popularity for many years. Although presently it has dropped from the top spot, the German Shepherd remains as one of the most versatile dogs ever created, serving as a police dog, war dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, narcotics- or explosives-detecting dog, show dog, pet—and even shepherd. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Labradoodles can come in a wide variety of coat colors and textures each adorable and unique in their own way. One of these varieties is the straight hair Labradoodle. A Labradoodle with straight hair, also known as a flat coat Labradoodle, is the subject of much confusion and many misconceptions. Can Labradoodles Have Straight Hair? Since the Labradoodle is a mixed breed between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, some puppies will naturally take on more traits from each of their parent breeds. Some will have straight, flat coats like the Lab, some will have curly coats like the Poodle, and some will have wavy coats that fall somewhere in between. Russ is a flat coat black Labradoodle. Photo courtesy of adventurussdoodle on Instagram. Are Labradoodles Always Curly? In fact, it can come in a variety of textures ranging from straight, to wavy, to curly. Many breeders strive for Labradoodle puppies that have curly hair, as many prospective owners prefer them due to their likelihood of being non-shedding and allergy-friendly. This is why you may notice more curly Labradoodles rather than straight haired ones. Photo courtesy of nednoodlethelabradoodle on Instagram. As a Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross , Labradoodles inherit traits from both of their parent breeds. Coat texture is just one of the many traits that can differ not only from litter to litter but from puppy to puppy. Since this gene is inherited from the Poodle side, a Labradoodle puppy with Cu Locus will have a coat that is more wavy or curly in texture. Reputable breeders perform genetic testing on the parents in an attempt to produce healthier and more desirable puppies. More often than not, breeders strive for curly coated Labradoodle puppies since they are more likely to be low-shedding and allergy-friendly than flat coated puppies. This is why breeders will sometimes refer to straight coat Labradoodles as having improper coats. Genetics are tricky to predict and no breeder can guarantee a certain coat type. However, which generation your Labradoodle is will drastically influence the odds of them having a flat coat. You can also look for a breeder that backcrosses Labradoodles to Labrador Retrievers. However, those parings are extremely rare. Keep in mind that many prospective owners are looking exclusively for curly haired Labradoodles. Are Straight Hair Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? While no Labradoodles can be considered completely hypoallergenic, straight haired Labradoodles have a greater risk of triggering allergy reactions than curly haired Labradoodles. On average, a Labradoodle with a flat coat will still be more allergy-friendly than a purebred Labrador Retriever. Straight Hair Labradoodle Shedding Straight hair Labradoodles will likely shed a moderate amount, but usually not as much as a purebred Lab. You should know that, with a Labradoodle, you get two distinct characteristics and genetic histories from two different parent dog breeds. Two Labradoodles are at the park. Labradoodles are considered a winning breed because the Poodle and Labrador are such a great combination. However, you still need to understand the coat of your pet so you can decide the best Labradoodle haircut for it. This means your dog will have wiry and short hair that grows relatively close to its body and forms tight little curls. Labradoodles with a wool coat will require significantly more grooming and a weekly management routine to keep the curls free of dirt and dust. You will also need to brush and groom him at least twice a week to prevent tangles and matting. Short Labradoodle hairstyles work best for this type of coat. Fleece Coat The fleece coat is easily recognized by straight or wavy soft hair. This coat is soft to the touch and, when groomed, can become very fluffy. Surprisingly, the fleece coat is one of the more effortless coats to maintain. While you will still have to maintain a regular grooming routine for your Labradoodle, being able to cuddle up with a soft and cuddly coat is a good compromise for the maintenance involved. Hairy Coat A Labradoodle with a hairy coat takes after its Labrador parent. This coat also gives off that shaggy look that Labradoodles are known for. However, one of the major disadvantages of this coat is that your Labradoodle will need regular grooming because this coat is highly prone to tangles and mats. Different Labradoodle Haircuts 1. The Puppy Cut Ironically enough, this is arguably one of the most popular Labradoodle hairstyles for an adult Labradoodle. Although the puppy cut would have slight variations based on the groomer, the result is very similar. An Australian Labradoodle sits with a ball at the beach. The puppy cut is a short overall body cut in which the coat is kept at a length of half an inch to three-fourth inches. The length of the puppy cut is a throwback to the style your Labradoodle would have naturally had when it was still a pup, thus the name of the cut. This is one of the most sought-after styles because it makes your Labradoodle cute and puppy-like despite its size. Apart from contributing to the adorable features of your dog, this haircut is also more popular as it is more practical and functional. It will also make grooming at home relatively more manageable and more convenient. The Teddy Bear Cut A highly sought-after haircut, the teddy bear cut is second only to the puppy cut when it comes to Labradoodles. A mini F1B Labradoodle wearing a bow tie Although this haircut is basic and quite similar to the puppy cut, it does entail more maintenance as the coat is longer. Around the tail, your Labradoodle will have a clipped and non-feathered cut with the feet and ear trims following a rounder shape. As the name suggests, the goal of this hairstyle is for your Labradoodle to look like a cute teddy bear. Most pet parents opt for this cut as it makes their dog less daunting to younger children and much more approachable and friendly. This haircut is ideal if your Labradoodle enjoys swimming and exploring the outdoors. It will also make it much easier for you to groom our pup at home as it will significantly reduce the grooming time. This cut is an excellent choice to prevent matting and the accumulation of loose undercoats. The Lamb Cut Another popular choice among Labradoodle owners is the lamb cut. This haircut strikes the perfect balance between having some length and still having the coat short enough that it is manageable for dog owners to groom at home. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. The kennel cut is more of a shave than a trim. Yes, it will involve getting rid of almost all that luxurious coat of your Labradoodle, leaving your dog with only half an inch, maybe even less, hair all around its body, including its head, ears, and legs. Not all dog Labradoodle owners are open to the idea of this haircut because it is rather extreme and a sight to behold. But, it is ideal for hot weather and your dog will have the whole summer to grow back its hair. This Labradoodle haircut is still stylish and is a recommended solution for Labradoodles who have severe tangles and mats. Besides, when you get your Labradoodle this haircut at the beginning of summer, it will still grow enough in time to keep your dog warm during the autumn and winter months. The Lion Cut If you want to add a touch of feline to your canine, then the lion cut is something you can consider. One of the trendiest Labradoodle hairstyles, the lion cut will transform your dog into a mini version of a lion thanks. A recently shaven Labradoodle rests on the floor in a holiday home. The Short Clip Labradoodle Cut Both parents of the Labradoodle are known to be active and energetic dogs who are fond of the outdoors. Labradoodles have inherited these traits and can spend hours swimming, hiking, and getting dirty. The solution? Labradoodle with curly coat sitting on the grass. The short clip Labradoodle cut. This is another practical haircut that will benefit both you and your dog. The short clip Labradoodble cut is a highly suggested hairstyle for summers to help prevent your dog from overheating. It is also a convenient cut if your dog is prone to tangles and matting. One of the best things about this haircut is it is a haircut you can learn and do yourself. It will save you plenty of time and money because you can give your dog this haircut at home with some help from other family members or friends. The Long Clip Labradoodle Cut This is a hairstyle suggested for Labradoodles who live a sedentary and indoor lifestyle as it allows your Labradoodle to keep its long and natural hair. When do Labradoodles stop growing? With this haircut, the fur is given an overall trim but it will be kept about two inches in length all over the body. The result is a shaggy look that maintains the natural curls and waves of the breed. The Mohawk A stylish and unconventional haircut, the mohawk looks good on a Labradoodle. The hair on top of its head, however, is only trimmed. Labradoodle hair regrows fairly quickly, give it 8 weeks and you will be back to fluffy. Your Labradoodle is essentially left with about three to four inches of hair. Some owners also love playing around with this Mohawk haircut by tying the hair together using colorful bands while others will just let it stand or fall. When you go to the salon or a barber to get a particular cut for yourself, you explain in detail the look you want to achieve. You may even take a picture of the hairstyle you want so your stylist knows what you are looking for. You can also inform the groomer of the length you want to retain on your Labradoodle. It is easier to trim again until the desired length is achieved. It is cost-effective to groom your dogs at home with your own grooming tools. Shaving is an effective solution if you want to get rid of matting and ensure that the new coat is healthier. But it is not the only option as you have haircuts like the short clip and kennel cut that can also help with mats and tangles. A shaved Labradoodle named Max having a minor sulk after a grooming session. With treats, he promptly recovered his enthusiasm. Professional groomers understand that most owners are reluctant and even afraid to have their Labradoodles completely shaved. So, most groomers will provide you with other solutions to reduce and prevent severe matting. Conclusion With their fun personality and excellent temperament, there is never a dull moment when you have a Labradoodle at home. But, regardless of the haircut, make sure your Labradoodle is regularly brushed and groomed to maintain his coat and keep him healthy. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. The easiest way of grooming is to start from the area below the skull and go all the way to its feet. Work your way through with the clippers, except on areas such as the muzzle, skull, and top of the head. In such areas, you can use thinning shears and scissors. Make sure not to cut too short around the groin area to avoid overexposure of the private parts. Comb back the hair around the belly to smooth out any left-out strands of hair. Turn the dog over and clip the areas around its paw pads gently. Use the grooming comb again all over its body and see if there is any hair sticking out. Make sure every part is consistently trimmed and looks neat. Use only scissors and thinning shear on those areas for a clean and nicely blended shape. For the eyes, use the scissors to do the corner areas. For the ears, comb the hair down and cut it proportionately to the tip of the ear with a straight scissor. Use the thinning shear to cut the excess hair on the back of its head. First, comb it and then hold it back in your fingers like a ponytail. Pull it down, align it, and then cut an inch or half. After all the clipping and trimming, look for any uneven and stray hair and use your shears to remove them. A short-haired Labradoodle is easier to manage and helps minimize the collection of dirt in its coat. Labradoodle Haircuts for Summer and Winter Labradoodles can sport short hair all-round the year. During the hot summer season, a short-haired Labradoodle is likely to feel much cooler and calmer than a longer hair doodle. Long hair can make your dog feel very stuffy, resulting in an over-heated body. On the other hand, it does not matter much whether Labradoodles have long or short hair during winters. If you think your dog is cold, you can use jackets to keep it warm, and it will do fine. Cost of Grooming Making multiple trips to the groomers shop never makes you go easy on your pocket. Get a good quality hairbrush and brush it every two-three days so that the hair is free from matting. This way, there will be longer gaps between the appointments, saving you some money. A lengthier haircut hardly does any good for a Labradoodle or its owner. This is why most people opt for summer cuts which anyway looks equally cute as any other style! Have you been debating on how to request your groomer what type of haircut you want for your doodle? Well, it is not that difficult to communicate it to them. One thing you should always do when your dog gets a good haircut is taking a picture of it for future reference. So, when you go for your next appointment, you can ask your groomer to do it exactly like the last time. If you do not have a picture, simply ask him to get a short haircut done or use a picture from the internet. Most groomers know what they are doing and try to get the exact haircut that you asked for. Therefore, it is necessary that we respect their work and not interfere while they are at it. Doing so might end up in a bad haircut for your poor doodle. Make sure you are grooming your dog for them to be healthy and happy and not just for them to look presentable. Conclusion For anyone new to this breed type, you would be glad to know Labradoodles are a favorite among dog lovers. This is because they possess sweet and friendly behavior as well as get easily adjusted with families. They are also the go-to pet dogs for most people because of being hypoallergenic. If you are already a Labradoodle owner, you would know these dogs are always excited to play. Good grooming keeps them hyperactive and happy. Investing in a regular grooming session and letting your doodles sport a short haircut will definitely keep them energetic all throughout. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. What is a Straight Hair Labradoodle? Some may have a scruffy look where tufts of hair sprout out of their body, while also having a short wavy or curly fur undercoat covering their body. Other straight hairs are completely covered in medium-long fur, that grows consistently all over their face and body. Their coats can range from straight to wavy hair, similar to a labrador. They can also be slick and glossy, or flat and matte, with feathering along the tails, and around the legs and face. Typically a straight coat will vary in length and thickness, with no two dogs from the same litter being guaranteed to have the same type of fur growth. As puppies, straight hair coats will not begin to grow out their hair until they are eight weeks old. By the time they are 12 weeks old, it will be clear as to what sort of coat the puppies will have. No, not all labradoodles have curly fur. They have both fur and hair actually. You may have noticed that I have been freely switching between the two during my explanations. This is because hair and fur are the same thing. Can Straight Hair Coats be Shaved? Typically the answer will be no. If you live in a hot country, then during the summer times, it might be worth considering to give them a trim. Not a shave! Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. A good diet helps to promote stronger hair follicles and a shinny coat, that can help reduce shedding. Some owners later discover that they are allergic to straight haired labradoodles. While it may be tempting to shave off their fur, in an attempt to eliminate the allergic reactions. This should never be done! Allergies are not triggered by dog fur. They are caused by pet dander — skin particles that are shed by the dog all year long. By shaving the fur off, the owner is actually making things worse for themselves. It drys the skin out, removing moisture and causes rashes to develop. As a result more skin is shed, exposing the pet owner to more dander. As more skin conditions develop or worsen, the dog will start scratching releasing even more dander into the air. How Often Should a Dog be Bathed? Bathing your dog can be effected by many different factors and can be very situational. You may need to bath them more frequently for medical reasons, or because of what they have decided to roll in. Generally speaking, bathing your labradoodle should be more infrequent. Over bathing your dog can strip its fur of natural oils that help to protect their skin and strengthen their hair. Ideally, you should limit proper bathes to when they start to smell a little, or if you need to remove matter from their fur. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. How to Watch Out for Skin Conditions If your Labradoodle has any skin conditions, this could cause them to shed more fur, or even release more dander into the air. They may show signs of a skin condition by excessive scratching or nipping and licking at the same area. Remember mites and parasites can cause just as much damage to the skin as over-bathing. If you are wondering if the straight hair coats are the sort of labradoodles for you, please consider the following points: Their coats require the lowest level of maintenance. They do shed a lot more then other coats. They look more like labradors, than poodles. They may not be suitable for people with dog allergies. No two straight hairs will have the same coat. They were first bred in Australia in the late s in an effort to produce a hypoallergenic guide dog and sparked a designer breed revolution. While they are low-shedding dogs, their thick coats still need regular grooming and brushing, plus a haircut every few months. Here are seven of the best haircuts for Labradoodles this year that your pooch will love! The cut is named for its resemblance to the coat that it would have naturally as a puppy. It not only looks great but is also functional, and your pooch can go for a few months without any knotting, matting, or needing another haircut. This cut gives them an adorable Teddy Bear look. It takes a fair bit more maintenance, though, and will need to be done fairly regularly, as the coat is left slightly longer. This cut was originally designed for Poodles and other breeds with curly coats but works great with Labradoodles too. The coat on their legs is left slightly long and fluffy, while the body and head are sheared short. The ears are left long, giving your pooch an adorable lamb-like appearance. This cut requires slightly more skill to perform but is a great low-maintenance style to keep your Labradoodle knot-free. It is also the go-to style if your pooch is covered in matting and knots that cannot be brushed out. It is a head-turning cut for sure and has become a popular choice among Labradoodle owners. It will keep your Labradoodle cool but still allow for an adorable wavy and curly coat to comb through. Similar to a Kennel Cut but slightly longer, the Short Clip is also ideal for warmer weather. Your Labradoodle is shaved all around to about 1 inch long, except the ears, in some cases. This cut is great for summer and minimizes the need for brushing and grooming, and your pooch will be knot-free for several months. Can you groom a Labradoodle on your own? With the correct equipment and time and patience, you can take grooming your Labradoodle into your own hands. Make sure their eyes are free from hair so they can see properly, and keep their ears fairly short to prevent matting. Be sure to take care around these sensitive areas, especially with scissors. Some dogs love to be groomed, while others will run a mile. This has nothing to do with breeds or genetics and everything to do with correct training. For dogs that have long coats that need regular grooming, try and get them accustomed to the process from as young an age as possible. Make the process something to forward to, with treats as rewards and tons of praise! Do Labradoodles Need Haircuts? You might be interested in these products:. Labradoodle Coat Types Labradoodles come in several different coat types, depending on which parent dog the puppy most takes after. Straight Coats Labradoodles with straight or hair coats most closely resemble their Labrador retriever parent. Of course, most buyers want a dog with a curly coat. Curly coats shed less and are therefore more popular with allergy sufferers and those who hate vacuum cleaner! Labradoodles with straight coats tend to have wiry, smooth muzzle fur and lack the Teddy Bear look that many people crave. Wool Coats Labradoodles with wool coats take most of their coat genetics from their Poodle parent. Wool coats are typically thick, dense, fluffy, and very soft to the touch. When brushed correctly, the hair should grow in beautiful, hollow spirals. Curly coats are prone to matting, so you need to be ready for some serious daily brushing if you take on one of these pups. Also, the haircut frequency for these woolly dogs is likely to be every few weeks to keep the coat in order. Wool coats vary depending on the individual makeup of each puppy and can be tight or loose. Regardless of coat type, wool coats are all light shedders, making these Doodles the most popular choice for allergy sufferers. Fleece Coat Fleece coats are a cross between wool and straight coats and are very popular with Doodle owners. A shaggy fleece coat is usually regarded as easy to care for and low-shedding, which is excellent news for vacuum-phobes and allergy sufferers. You need to brush this kind of coat once or twice a week to keep it looking good and free from mats. The fleece coat is soft and fluffy, with the facial hair being more coarse in texture. A flat coat Labradoodle is another name for a straight haired Labradoodle. They take more after the Labrador side of the breed with a scruffy medium length coat rather than a curly or wavy coat that people usually associate with the breed. Standard sized Straight Hair Labradoodles grow to 51 to 66cm and weigh 23 to 45kg. On the other hand, Miniature Straight Hair Labradoodles get to 40 to 51cm in height and weigh 12 to 23kg. Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles need basic grooming like all dogs, requiring a weekly brush to remove shedded hair and the occasional bath to keep them clean. Nevertheless, they do not need to be taken to the groomer for a trim every weeks like their curly coat relatives which can save owners quite a bit of money yearly. Do Straight Haired Labradoodles Shed? Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles shed quite considerably like their Labrador parents. They are the opposite of Curly or Wavy Haired Labradoodles who hardly shed at all. No, Straight Haired Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic as they shed due to the dominance of Labrador genes over Poodle genes. They are unlike Wavy or Curly Haired Labradoodles which are hypoallergenic due to their long, curly coat that needs to be cut. That being said, straight haired Labradoodles are more hypoallergenic than a purebred Labrador. You can read our full Labradoodle shedding guide here. This is most likely to occur in a first generation Labradoodle F1 Labradoodle when a Labrador and Poodle are bred together rather than two Labradoodles. Whilst most people believe that all Labradoodles have a wavy or curly coat, it is actually very common for Labradoodles to have straight haired coat, taking after their Labrador parent more than the Poodle. Some Labradoodles look more like Labradors then Poodles, especially when they have a straight coat instead of a wavy or curly one. This occurs when Labradoodles do not inherit the curly coat gene called the Cu Locus gene and most commonly occurs for F1 Labradooodles. F2 Labradoodle is when an F1 Labradoodle is bred with another F1 Labradoodle resulting in a fifty-fifty chance of Straight Hair Labradoodles occurring in the litter. If you are looking for a Straight Hair Labradoodle you will want to get an F1 or F2 litter as they have the highest change of the straight hair gene of the Labrador coming through. No, not all F1 Labradoodles will have straight hair however a significant percentage of the litter will. F1 Labradoodles can have any coat type from wavy to curly to straight as it is a first generation breed of a Labrador Retriever and Poodle. No, Straight Hair Labradoodles do not have a double coat like their Labrador parent. Instead they have a single coat. As the weather gets hotter, Straight Hair Labradoodles will start shedding a little more than usual. Nevertheless, colour changes as expected for maturing Labradoodles. The colour of their coats often change colour or fade several shades lighter as they become an adult. Check out the adorable Labradoodle puppies that are currently available here! Lifespan Sociability So, the most obvious thing that you need to make sure you have before buying a Golden Newfie is space and lots of it. This pooch weighs between 75 and pounds and can measure up to 29 inches tall. Not only do you need space in the home, but you also need access to outdoor space so that he can play and snooze in the fresh air. You might want to invest in a bigger sofa too because the Golden Newfie sees himself as a lapdog. Get ready for the numb leg life! This guy is needy, and so he needs to be homed with a family that can spend most of their time with him. Do you spend long hours in the office? Sadly this hybrid hound is not for you. He craves human company and becomes very anxious and sad without it. This will lead to separation anxiety, and an anxious dog with the power and jaws that he has means that your homely possessions will not be around for long. So, someone will need to be around for most of the day. This guy sheds moderately all year round, and he experiences a full-on shed during shedding season. There is also the issue of doggy drool. If he takes after his Newfie parent, he will definitely be a drooler. Although the Golden Newfie is calm in the home, he needs a lot of exercise. His exercise will not need to be intense or vigorous like other breeds need, but he will need a steady 1-hour walk every day. Taking him to the local lake will boost your mom or dad points for sure! The cost of welcoming a Golden Newfie into your life is higher than most other breeds. This is a significant factor to consider before you buy one of these guys. Being a large to giant breed, he will need a large bed, large toys, large harnesses, etc. He also eats a lot of food, and it is also likely that his medical costs will be higher too. The Golden Newfie is rarely golden. Despite his name and the color of his Golden Retriever parent, this guy is rarely gold. This is unusual for mixed pups who tend to be a mixture of their parents, rather than inheriting the typical color of one parent. If you do find a rarer color, he is likely to be much more expensive than a classic black Golden Newfie. The Golden Newfie might have webbed feet. His Newfoundland parent has webbed feet, so this guy will likely have them, too. This will not cause any complications. Instead, it makes him a stronger swimmer and an excellent water rescue dog. Not only is his Newfie parent able to pull in fishing nets and boat lines, but he can save a fully grown man from drowning. So the Golden Newfie is a useful chap to have around. Okay, so he can bark, but he almost always chooses not too. Instead, he will growl at those who he suspects are up to no good or putting his family in danger. His low growl and humungous size are enough to put any intruder off. This sweet guy is super affectionate with his family. He loves nothing more than to chill with his family, receiving all the belly rubs for being the best boy. He will paw at you for more attention, and this seriously needy dog will never leave you alone. This is great if you are seeking a doggy partner in crime, but not so much if you prefer more independent dogs. His neediness quickly develops into separation anxiety, more so than most other dogs. This is why he must be placed with a family where someone can be home for most of the day. Do not underestimate his need for human company, or try to stretch a few hours absence into 5 or 6, this will not do for the Golden Newfie. In return for your company and love, he will provide you with hours of fun and plenty of personality. Although he is calm in the home, he will happily frolic in the backyard and play games with his family. Fancy an afternoon of silly activities? He has a protective nature inherited from his Newfie parent and will stand his ground and growl if he feels the need to. Thankfully his sheer size and deep growl are enough to keep intruders away. Instead, he prefers a more tranquil atmosphere. He loves children and will probably choose to sit with them over his parents any day of the week. Both breeds are known to have a sweet spot for younger members of the family, so he will be doubly caring. His Newfie parent is famous for helping out with family children , the most notable being Brumus, who helped Senator Robert Kennedy with his 11 children. Are These Dogs Good for Families? He is versatile and adaptable to most family environments and dynamics, just as long as you meet his needs. The only thing that might be a cause for concern is his ginormous size. Although he adores children, he could smother a child without even realizing it. For this reason, you always need to supervise a Golden Newfie when there are young children around. As long as he is socialized, he should do well with dogs of all shapes and sizes. So he makes a prime canine candidate for a multi-dog or multi-pet household. He should be fed a high-quality kibble that is specially designed for large or giant breeds. Giant breeds have unique nutritional needs, and all-life stage kibbles will not do here. These kibbles will support his heavily laden joints and his slower metabolism. This is particularly important during his puppy stage because the right nutrition can decrease his chances of developing muscular-skeletal diseases. He will demand a constant supply of snacks and fatty human foods, but you need to resist. The Golden Newfie can easily pile on the pounds, so you need to monitor his food intake and treats carefully. An overweight Golden Newfie is an unhappy and unhealthy one. You need to be mindful that being a large dog, the Golden Newfie is susceptible to suffering from Gastric Dilation Volvulus. Never feed him immediately before or after exercise, because this can bring on this life-threatening condition. Make yourself aware of the symptoms, and always keep these in the back of your mind. Instead, he would much prefer long country walks and a few playtime sessions in the yard with his family. Not only will he become stubbornly lazy if you allow him to be, but he needs to get his heart pumping and his large body moving to stay healthy. As you already know, he will love the water, so be sure to include this in your list of activities for the week. An unruly and arrogant Golden Newfie will be a struggle to deal with, even for the strongest and experienced owners. Taking him down to the local doggy park is a great way to exercise his body, stimulate his mind, and remind him how to be polite. You will want to think about leash training this boy from the start because a Golden Newfie who pulls on the leash will be difficult to handle and unenjoyable to walk. It is also a great way to teach him who is in charge. Crate training is also advised for this anxious pup. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that your dog is happy in his safe-spot when you are out. He has a thick and wavy double coat that will need brushing every single day. Otherwise, his jacket will quickly become matted, which is not only painful for him, but it can lead to skin conditions. Brushing also strengthens the bond with your canine, and he will love it for sure. Bathtime will not be an issue for this pooch. Always rinse and dry thoroughly too. You will need to trim his claws regularly, as well as cleaning his eyes and ears. The Golden Newfie suffers from regular ear infections if not cleaned thoroughly. This is an excellent lifespan for a dog of his size. Minor Conditions. Health: Unfortunately, these dogs have a shorter lifespan than other breeds as is the case with many large breed dogs. Golden Newfies live around 10 years with proper care. These dogs are fairly healthy otherwise, though they can be susceptible to conditions like hip dysplasia and bloat which are experienced by both parent breeds. Hold your horses! Here is a quick checklist to make sure the Golden Newfie is the dog of your dreams: Somebody is usually home at your house. These people-oriented pooches want nothing more than to hang out with their family members and friends. With large breeds like the Golden Newfie, focused training sessions are an absolute must. These dogs also need to be socialized early on, as they may have a tendency to be protective around strangers. While this daily upkeep can be a lot of work, a grateful Golden Newfie is sure to show his appreciation in unwavering loyalty and care. You can keep these smart pups entertained. Golden Newfies need more than just their mandatory potty walks. These pups should be paired with families that are able to provide them with plenty of activities and attention throughout the day. You have plenty of space. Any Golden Newfie is sure to appreciate having a big, fenced-in yard to stretch his legs in. Golden Newfies love spending time with friends and family members of all ages. While these dogs are incredibly loving and wonderful canine companions, they do require considerable amounts of attention and maintenance on a daily basis. With that in mind, most Golden Newfie owners find that these big buddies are worth the extra care and effort. As with any designer dog, Golden Newfies result from a unique cross and are, therefore, somewhat tricky to track down. With that in mind, one of your best resources is the internet! Scour pet-oriented search engines like Petfinder for leads on these designer dogs. You can also ask other Golden Newfie owners if you could get in contact with their breeder. Should the characteristics of either parent seem unfit for you and your family, the puppy might not be the right pick for you. Bernefie: This Bernese Mountain dog and Newfoundland mix is gentle, intelligent, and good with kids. These big buddies bond closely with their family members and may be naturally wary of strangers, so early socialization is paramount. Golden Saint: This Saint Bernard and golden retriever mix is a gentle, loving family companion that is sure to keep you on your toes with his playful personality. Does he act more like a golden retriever or a Newfoundland? Header image from Newfoundlanddog-info. These large, fluffy, and lovable companions make great family pets. They are sweet, affectionate, and eager to please. This dog breed may not be established enough for the AKC yet, but they are recognized by other canine registries. The parents of a Golden Newfie are some of the friendliest and most affectionate dog breeds. They do well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are protective of their families, they even tend to be open and friendly with strangers! Because of their size, the Golden Newfie is a moderately adaptable dog. As long as they get enough daily exercise and attention, they can adapt to apartment living, but it needs to be big enough for their size to allow them to move around. They thrive in larger homes, especially those with fenced yards where they can run and play freely. Golden Newfies do well in most climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Their fluffy coats also make them prone to overheating easily. Because they bond closely with their families and are affectionate companions, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and can develop separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Newfie can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation , subaortic stenosis, and cancer. Reputable breeding practices make a big difference. Good breeders will screen their dogs to make sure they are not passing preventable issues to puppies, so make sure you ask about the parents and any tests that have been done. As a large dog breed, the Golden Newfie is at risk for bloat. Golden Newfies are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. But, they also get bored easily, especially with repetition, and can become stubborn if training is not kept interesting. They respond best to patient, consistent training focused on positive rewards and praise. They do not respond well to harsh tones and will often become obstinate and uncooperative if they are used during training. Despite this potential stubbornness, Golden Newfies tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. You just want to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes if you are a first-time dog owner. Golden Newfies will have a long, fluffy coat that can range from cream to gold to black. They will shed moderately year-round and heavier during seasonal changes. Brushing a few times a week is usually enough, but daily brushing is recommended, especially during seasonal shedding sessions. Bathing is on an as-needed basis and grooming is recommended a couple of times a year. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks along with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing daily with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed, is ideal dental care for dogs. Although a Golden Newfie has moderate exercise requirements, they can sometimes be a couch potato. Daily walks plus some playtime and other activity are what this dog needs to stay happy and healthy. A fully-grown Golden Newfie usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Golden Newfies generally live for years. Featured Golden Newfie Article.

merle bulldog puppies - Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. You can protect your dog with a microchip, but there are other steps you can take. The Fi GPS tracking dog collar helps you keep your dog safe. The design is highly resistant and waterproof for durability, and the collar comes with a battery that lasts three months. You can track your pet anywhere and locate them easily if they get lost. There are a few things you should know about this working breed. Personality of the German Shepherd German Shepherds are fiercely loyal. They make excellent guard dogs thanks to their protective instincts. They also make amazing pets who will give you lots of affection. GSDs are reliable and hardworking dogs who thrive if you constantly give them new tasks and challenges. These dogs are extremely versatile. German Shepherds have amazing potential and tend to do extremely well in training thanks to their drive and intelligence. However, they require consistent training and handling since they can be mouthy, chase prey, or become overprotective without the right training. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. Here are a few tips to help you lower the cost. Look for a breeder who cares about the animals and who does health testing on the parents, but everything else is extra. You should also consider adopting a dog with an unknown lineage. Check local shelters or go online to look at classified ads. Check classified ads to find owners rehoming their pets. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with CLAD, type III typically exhibit symptoms such as recurrent ear infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. How to Find Breed Rescues Along with the list mentioned above, many breed rescues list their adoptable dogs on large adoption sites such as:. Rabbit Exercise Requirements German Shepherds were bred to work all day, so they have plenty of energy to spare. A Long Coat German Shepherd is not a good fit for a couch potato. These dogs need at least 2 hours of exercise every day. Arguably the best home for a Long Haired German Shepherd would be one with kids and a big yard. The kids and dog can chase each other, play fetch, and wear each other out. One thing is certain — a lack of exercise can cause undesirable behaviors like barking and chewing. If your Long-Haired German Shepherd is misbehaving, try giving them more exercise. It just might help. Training a Long Haired German Shepherd German Shepherds are intelligent and easy to train with the consistent use of dog training commands. With positive reinforcement training, they can quickly learn whatever you teach them. That often leads to aggression. Speaking of training, Long Coat German Shepherds thrive when they have a job to do. Consider training them to be a therapy dog or to participate in a dog sport like agility or dock diving. If you do choose to leave your German Shepherd outdoors at night, make sure they have a warm, dry shelter. Their shedding tends to increase when the seasons change, and you may need to brush every day for a while. The best brushes for a Long Haired German Shepherd are a slicker brush and a comb. You should use the slicker brush first. Then, use the comb to check for tangles and pull out the additional undercoat. Long-Haired German Shepherds also need an occasional bath. You should brush them before the bath because water can make mats and undercoat tighter. Instead, opt for a deshedding service and a short feather trim. This article has tool recommendations and brushing tips from a professional groomer. Fault or Friend? However, there is no fault with the personality of a Long Coat German Shepherd. As long as they come from a reputable breeder, they are perfect family pets like the short-haired variety. There is one caveat, though. When somebody breeds dogs for looks over personality, health and behavioral issues may be more common. Run away from any breeder who advertises that they specialize in Long Haired German Shepherds. You can also check shelters and breed rescues for Long Coat German Shepherds. The cost of Long Haired German Shepherds varies wildly. The biggest factor when searching for a Long Haired German Shepherd puppy is to avoid getting one from a pet store or puppy mill. Most pet stores get their animals from puppy mills. The conditions animals are kept in at puppy mills are horrific. The dogs are kept in small cages that rarely get cleaned. They may be kept inside a large barn where they never see the sun or touch grass. Unless you get a puppy from a reputable puppy mill rescue group, avoid buying animals from pet stores or websites like Craigslist. Plan on brushing your dog a lot and keeping lint rollers around. Also, know that the long coat will bring lots of dirt and debris into your home. If you have the time and energy, a Long Coat German Shepherd might be the perfect addition to your family.
