Lentil, a 9-week-old French bulldog rescue puppy with a severe cleft palate and lip, is making humans from Taiwan to Germany drool, but it's Philadelphia that he calls home. His Facebook fan page, called "My name is Lentil," has more than 48, likes, and people the world over look forward to the daily video and photo posts from Lentil's "foster mom," Lindsay Condefer, of Fishtown. Lentil has been featured on German television, BuzzFeed and the Huffington Post, but his greatest work may yet be ahead of him. Advertisement Condefer and area doctors hope that Lentil can usher in a visitation program between patients at the University of Pennsylvania's Veterinary School of Medicine and those at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Condefer also plans to have Lentil work with the Children's Craniofacial Association to bring a greater understanding of those with facial deformities. Lentil was one of a litter of four French bulldog puppies, all of whom had facial deformities, born to a breeder in New Jersey at the beginning of February. Two of the pups died at birth, and the other two were turned over to the French Bulldog Rescue Network, which is now raising money for Lentil's treatment. The president of the network called Condefer, a volunteer, and asked if she'd be interested in two "tube feeders. Condefer, who owns Chic Petique in Northern Liberties and runs Street Tails Animal Rescue, a nonprofit that specializes in special-needs animals, couldn't say no. She picked up Lentil and his sister, Edamame, when they were 4 days old. Edamame died just 17 hours later. Lentil weighed in at only 5. On Feb. She now posts several photos and usually one video a day of the pup, also known as "The Bean. Everything alright? Gotta check in on the baby! Condefer has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and interest in Lentil. Morrissey's daughter, Rachael, now 19, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, and has undergone 15 surgeries. A friend found Lentil on Facebook and alerted the Morrisseys. We had never even thought of a dog or any other animal having a cleft or any cranial-facial issue," Morrissey said. It's just different for humans, and I thought that was interesting. One day, Condefer hopes to bring him to CCA retreats. Condefer says she plans to have Lentil get only the surgeries necessary on his nose, lip, hard palate and soft palate to get him eating and functioning on his own. Just leave it," she said. John Lewis, assistant professor of dentistry and oral surgery at Penn Vet, said it's rare to see so many defects in one puppy. Still, he said, Lentil is a good patient. Lewis said the goal, when Lentil is a big enough for surgery, is to create barriers in his oral and nasal cavities to prevent food and liquids from getting where they're not supposed to. Until then, Lentil will keep regaling his online followers with his unbearable cuteness and his inspiring story. Advertisement Advertisement About Us. Condefer Meet Lentil, a 5-month-old French bulldog who was born with a severe, double sided cleft in his hard and soft palate, lip and nose. Lentil now works as an "ambassadog," helping adults and children with cranial and facial deformities. Courtesy of Lindsay K. Condefer Lentil was born with the congenital defect. His breeder decided to give him away, and he was soon fostered by Lindsay Condefer, a former technician at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine who volunteers with the French Bulldog Rescue Network of Philadelphia. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer Cleft palates and lips happen to dogs, just like humans. While it is true we see broad-faced and short-faced dogs, they can occur in any breed. It's not necessarily a genetic issue," Dr. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer and Children's Craniofacial Association Dogs typically present with a unilateral cleft on the left side of the snout. What made Lentil's case different is he had a cleft on both sides of his face and it extended through the hard and soft palate. The hard palate cleft was the most concerning for doctors because it could potentially cause life-threatening injuries. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer and Children's Craniofacial Association Lentil helps children with facial defects feel better about themselves. Because his hard palate was open, Lentil's nasal passageways were susceptible to infection. Food and liquid could easily go down the his windpipe and not his esophagus, which could cause him to choke to death. Lentil had to be tube-fed every three hours in order to make sure the pup got the right nutrients. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer and Children's Craniofacial Association When Lentil reached four months old, doctors decided it was time to fix his cleft hard palate issues. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer Dr. Alexander Reiter was the lead surgeon on the case. He determined that while the hard palate issues were necessary to fix, the soft palate and facial issues were just cosmetic and should be left alone. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer "In a human, if a child has a cleft lip, this is something that stands out," Dr. Alexander Reiter said. Dogs and cats do not know what they look like. They don't have a perception of themselves. John Lewis, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine who assisted with Lentil's surgery, had just come back from giving a talk at the Center for Human Appearance at the University of Pennsylvania, and realized that Lentil could become a valuable teaching tool in helping patients, especially children, deal with facial defects. Courtesy of Lindsay K Condefer The team decided to create a program that would connect canines and people with cranial and facial deformities. John Lewis explained. An adorable bulldog puppy with a cleft palate has taken the Internet by storm with his cute face and admirable fight to survive. The tiny French bulldog named Lentil was born Feb. Along with his sister, Edamame, who was also born with the condition and died days after birth, Lentil was rescued by people working for the French Bulldog Rescue Network in New Jersey. This is the reason foster mom is tube feeding me — and why we celebrate each day and keep my page positive!! Life is a blessing … and we are cherishing just that! But the process is difficult. And breathing can be difficult, too. When Condefer, who runs a natural pet foods store in Philadelphia called Chic Petique, first encountered Lentil, along with his sister, he was a meager six ounces. They looked like little beans, so I named them accordingly, Lentil and Edamame. Just WOW …. That was so thoughtful — it brought me to tears when I saw it … and also a thank you to Michele at Diesel and Juice! This is just so special!! In another few weeks, Lentil will be able to go for his first surgical consult, where veterinarians can begin to assess the correct course of action. Until then, however, Condefer is treating everyday with her darling doggy as a gift. Lentil and his sister, Edamame, were born with cleft palates and deformed snouts. Though they were both taken into the care of a devoted fosterer, Edamame did not pull through, passing away shortly after her birth. Lentil, however, is still around. The tiny puppy is the subject of a blog and Facebook fan page — with lots of photos — and every day his number of supporters grows. Lentil still had his eyes shut when he was taken in by his fosterer via the French Bulldog Rescue Network, and he must be fed through a tube every three hours. Despite the challenges Lentil faces, he continues to gain about an ounce per day, which will make him a better candidate for corrective surgery. At a mere seven weeks old, Lentil has already seen a string of specialists. He has a consultation scheduled with a doctor at the University of Pennsylvania who has experience correcting similar deformities in other animals. He may have come from harrowing beginnings, but it looks like the little dog is well on his way. Not bad for someone only seven weeks old who needs to eat through a tube! In , a French Bulldog puppy with a cleft palate found his way into the arms of Lindsay Condefer. His name is Lentil Bean. Condefer plans to incorporate multiple stalls, run-ins, a chicken coop and more by late spring. It all happened organically, which makes it that much more beautiful. There is a reason for [Lentil]. Also a lover of French bulldogs, she is a longtime advocate for the French Bulldog Rescue Network, a volunteer-based organization dedicated to putting these dogs into the care of families. The organization contacted Condefer about Lentil, knowing she was qualified to care for the cleft palate dog. The Facebook users who follow My Name is Lentil have created an online community that Condefer never imagined possible. It is, in a sense, a group of people around the world who send birthday cards and other encouraging messages to children with craniofacial differences. In , Condefer learned of a young girl in Mississippi with a cleft palate whose birthday was around the corner. The families can scroll through them during the surgery, they know the world is behind them. For more information about the GoFundMe page, visit www. Once they reach eight weeks, changing to dry kibble food is best. We recommend feeding a Labrador puppy dry kibble for the first months before changing to an adult food type. But to remain healthy, owners should know what to feed them. Dog owners should feed a Labrador puppy dry food kibble , wet food, or fresh human food, depending on their budget and lifestyle. There are many options for food for dogs, and it can become challenging to determine which one is the best option for the dog. We have found the best options and listed them below. They help us with our daily tasks, are always there when we need them, and bring great joy to our lives. But, it is essential to ensure that our dog gets the best nutrition possible. They have a lot of energy and need to be fed accordingly. This includes the number of calories, food type, and the number of meals per day. We will explain all of these factors to help understand what to feed these precious animals. A Labrador puppy needs high-quality protein in their diet, so they should not be fed just any type of food. This is why we recommend three food options: dry food or kibble, fresh food or human food, or wet food. We prefer using dry food or kibble in most cases, but it is beneficial to start with wet food for young puppies and transition to dry food after a few weeks. Feeding a puppy human food is possible, but it can be more expensive and requires extra work to stick to a cleaner diet at this age. We have found it to be a healthier and more convenient option for our pets. It is also a good alternative to wet food which can be difficult to store and prepare. The benefits of dry dog food are that it offers the pup a balanced diet that doesn't need refrigeration. It also offers convenience because we can buy it in bulk and store it in the pantry or freezer until needed. Dry dog food is also less expensive than wet food, which is another benefit for pet owners. Fresh Food Human Food Feeding a Labrador puppy a diet of fresh, real human food is one of the best things to do for their health and well-being. It will not only make them happy and content, but it will also keep them healthy. This eliminates the guessing game; they are only fed real, natural foods with no unknown ingredients. However, it will become expensive and require regular cooking and preparation. Wet Food Wet food is recommended for Labrador puppies when they are first born and for the first weeks while they grow. It can be either raw or cooked. Wet food is a good source of water and minerals, which are important in the early days of their life to help them grow strong bones and teeth. It should be given to a puppy as soon as it comes out of its mother's womb, but it must not be given before it starts eating solid foods because it will cause diarrhea. Once they get more mature, moving to kibbles is best. It is known for its low level of grain and carbohydrate content and high protein content. Once they reach the week mark, there are better options to help the puppy continue to develop and grow. This food also helps with digestion and weight management. It also promotes proper bone growth with antioxidants and necessary nutrients like vitamin E. The kibble is also shaped strategically to help puppies who chew fast while helping with jaw growth. Overall, this is the best food option for a Labrador puppy. It is designed for all life stages, from puppies to seniors, and we love the benefits it provides to younger labs. This wet food provides the perfect balance of healthy proteins to support a dog's growth while providing the energy they need to maintain its fitness levels. This can be fed as a meal or as an occasional snack between meals. It has no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or added sugar. It also contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which are important for healthy skin and the dog's coat. They are large, strong, intelligent dogs that need a lot of attention, exercise, and food. These dogs can be picky eaters and usually need a lot of calories because of their size. This is especially true for puppies so they can grow properly and remain healthy due to their increased risk of health issues. Food Type Labrador puppies' most popular dog foods are kibbles and canned wet food. Kibbles are the best option for a puppy because they are easy to chew and digest. Canned food is a good option for pups who have difficulty chewing or digesting dry food and would benefit from a little moisture in their diet. The food type also depends on the owner. Dry food or kibbles are faster to prepare, while serving human food to a lab puppy requires extensive prep time. Nutritional Value When it comes to nutritional value, we want dog food that has high-quality protein and carbohydrates. This will help the puppy grow strong and healthy. This is why we need to take into account the nutritional value, quality of ingredients, and taste. It should be made with all-natural ingredients that are sourced from human-grade materials such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A brand should have all the essential nutrients for a pup but still, be low in toxic elements and preservatives too. Dietary Restrictions Lastly, consider the dietary restrictions of the Labrador puppy before choosing a dog food option. This includes any allergies or health concerns for the dog and shopping for something that suits them best. For example, lab puppies must reach a certain carbohydrate and protein number daily. Labradors are also known to have allergies, especially young ones, so planning around this is crucial. A puppy should be fed at least three times a day, with a meal size that is appropriate for its body weight. They should also be given small daily snacks to keep them satisfied and happy, including treats to help with training. We feed our puppies the best that we can. We want to give them all the nutrients and vitamins they need. We also want to make sure that they are getting a balanced diet. The most important thing when feeding a Labrador puppy is that they get enough calories from their food every day. In the first weeks, the puppy should eat four smaller daily meals. Once the lab reaches three months, this can be changed to three meals per day. And after months, we recommend two meals per day. The key is not to change the calories much when the meals change but to simply modify the size of each meal to fit the total daily food amount. Feeding a Labrador puppy is not rocket science, but there are some things everybody should know about what to feed them and when to feed them. We have covered this basis, but changes need to be made as they age. This leads to a common question about changing food to fit the needs of a grown adult Labrador. The dog's age will determine how quickly they grow and how much energy they need. Lab puppies can stick with kibbles for up to 12 months. Diamond Naturals Dog Food Review An additional reason for there being specific food for puppies is the pieces are smaller which not only prevents them from choking, it also makes the food easier to digest. The pieces are richer, denser and the ideal size for smaller mouths. These ingredients are where your pup gets the nutrients they need to grow and live, nutrients that are sadly lacking in the cheaper dog foods. With foods that are a bit more expensive, your pooch can eat a more well-balanced meal and enjoy it. They eat more, they poop more, and this means house training becomes much harder for you. What you feed your puppy is a major factor in the success of your house training process. Firstly, dry food tends to be more complete and balanced with the correct amount of vital nutrients in it. The ingredients tend to be of better quality as long as you pick the right brand. Plus, dry food helps to keep teeth strong due to being a solid food, and the slightly abrasive nature of the solid food has a natural teeth cleaning effect. It also lasts far longer than cans as you need to feed less of it. The fiber in it will help with digestion while it has antioxidants that are known to help keep your dog healthy for many years to come. Royal Canin Breed Specific Labrador Puppy Royal Canin is a very well-known brand with lots of positive reviews from past and present dog owners on Amazon. It has an above average protein content than the minimum recommended for your dog, coming in at 31 percent protein at dry weight. The protein it has comes mostly from chicken by-product meal which is considered somewhat low quality and consists of whatever is left after chickens are slaughtered. However, it does NOT — as you might read elsewhere — consist of anything from feet to beaks. According to dogfoodadvisor. After chicken by-product meal, the second ingredient in this food is brewers rice. The fourth ingredient is corn gluten meal which is a residue left over once most of the useful, starchy carbohydrates have been washed out of it. With such popularity, high ratings and reviews with so many people saying their dogs thrive on this, there must be some truth to it. The third to 5th ingredients are wholesome whole grains that provide high energy from complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest. These are far better than corn and most other sources of carbs found in cheaper foods that are hard for a puppy to get any nutrition from. Out of everything in this product, 40 percent of it is protein, which is higher than average. About 14 percent of it is fat, and of the remainder, 38 percent is carbs. And the omega oils may help reduce risk of developing arthritis. Not only this, but Labradors are a large breed and are more sensitive to nutritional imbalances than smaller breeds. You really do need to get their diet right to do the best for them. Luckily, many brands of food specifically aimed at large breeds and Labradors have been created that provide everything they need in just the right amounts, that are easy for an owner to feed by simply following instructions on the packet. Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies. Your Lab puppy is going to require a different balance of nutrients than an adult Lab. Different dog breeds are susceptible to different genetic health conditions. Larger breeds, like Labrador Retrievers, are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Nutrition plays a vital role in preventing certain health issues. In recent years concern has been raised about a possible link between grain-free and non-grain-free diets that list legumes high on their ingredient list causing heart disease. This may be of consequence to Labradors as the breed is more prone to heart conditions than others. This does not just include Labs, but owners of any large or giant dog breed should be aware of this important information so they can make the most well-informed decision. Image Credit: Didkovska Ilona, Shutterstock Choosing the Best Food While having a list of the best puppy foods is a great start, you still must narrow it down to one. So, how does one choose from a list of great choices? Below we will cover some of the most important things to consider before making your final choice. What Does Your Veterinarian Recommend? Chances are that your veterinarian has dealt with purebred Labrador Retrievers many times before. Dog Food Brand You want to ensure you are choosing a dog food brand that is reputable. Finding a brand that is made with veterinary nutritionists and is backed by scientific research is ideal. If a brand advertises that they participate in AAFCO feeding trials, this means they have invested in research to ensure there are no nutritional deficiencies in the food. Disposition and Temperament Boxers are happy, playful, curious, and energetic. So much so that many remain extremely fit and athletic into their old age. They are very intelligent, eager, quick to learn and known to be a good breed for competitive obedience. Boxers bond closely with their family and are loyal and affectionate. In fact, they are known to get along well with children. A properly socialized Boxer will get along with dogs and other household pets, such as cats, but small animals such as rodents or birds may be too tempting. Being energetic and playful, the Boxer can become boisterous and jump on people without proper training and leadership. Boxers need to go on a daily walk and get daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become stressed out. You should start training your Boxer while it is a puppy: Boxers do best with dominant owners who can be firm, consistent and committed. You need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack with this dog breed. Owners who do not establish dominance often find their dogs to be stubborn or demanding which can hamper the owner-pet relationship. Living Conditions As for living arrangements, they can be fine in an apartment if sufficiently exercised even though they are active indoors, but Boxers really do best with an average-sized yard. They are also temperature sensitive, overheating easily and chilling quickly. Boxers have a natural tendency to protect their owners and home, and although visitors who the dog recognizes are not seen as a threat, will protect their owners if they sense danger. Boxers are courageous which makes them great watchdogs and will even restrain intruders. It is important to know Boxer puppies require human leadership and need to be taught not to be boisterous or jump up on people. It requires very little grooming. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. The Boxer was developed in Germany in the 19th century and its ancestors were two German mastiff-type breeds. They were later bred with the ancestors of the Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. German Boxers have bigger heads and are generally more muscular than American Boxers. See store for details on a puppy. The American Canine Association, Inc. The American Canine Registry. However, you only need to stimulate the puppy if it is eating and not with the mother. Keep the puppy warm and continue rubbing it to help it breathe and move. This should be continued until the puppy is under veterinary supervision. For a puppy with anasarca to have a chance of survival, it needs to be treated by a veterinarian. If your dog gave birth at home, then you need to take the puppy to a veterinary office right away. If your normal veterinary office is closed when the mother dog gives birth, then you should take the affected puppy to the closest 24 veterinary emergency clinic. As soon as a puppy is born with anasarca it should begin treatment to stand any chance of survival. Treatment usually includes giving the puppy a diuretic to reduce the amount of fluid the puppy is retaining. If the condition is mild, the puppies can go on to live normal lives. Even with prompt treatment, however, a puppy with a severe case of anasarca has a very slim chance of survival. If the puppy has a severe case of anasarca, it has a very low chance of survive. If this is the case with your puppy, then you should focus on making sure it is comfortable and pain free instead of focusing on recovery. If it doesn't, then your veterinarian will have some suggestions about how to stop the puppies' suffering. This could include keeping it warm and giving it medication to alleviate any pain. In some cases, this could mean compassionate euthanasia. Prepare yourself that the outcome may be death. In many cases of anasarca, the puppy is still born or dies quickly after birth. Pregnant dams need lots of water, as the amniotic fluid is constantly changing. Water babies are like babies that become anemic low blood in utero. They get severely edematous. This is usually due to parvovirus or an immune response blood group incompatibility. Image of a newborn water puppy— MistyTrails plays "midwoof" to many local breeders. Water Puppy Syndrome Edema:an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in various organs, cavities, or tissues of the body. We can learn a bit from "people" medicine—water babies hydrops usually occurs from lack of red blood cells in the baby as a result of an infection or immune reaction. It can affect only one pup in a litter or the entire litter. Water puppies are impossible to deliver naturally, as they are huge, swollen, waterlogged puppies. A C-section is a must, as these puppies are generally two to four times the size of their littermates. These pups range from mild, medium to severely affected. If your dam is pushing on a single puppy, has contractions for two hours without puppy presentation into the birth canal, especially after delivering one or two normal pups, you should seek veterinary assistance, as the remaining pups can die along with the dam. This is a Medical Emergency! There are many opinions on why these water pups develop; some say it is congenital or environmental, some say diet, trauma to the dam, or even a virus. The condition is also occasionally seen in other dog breeds. An x-ray does not always show the larger size of these puppies, as the weight is mostly fluid. An ultrasound is thought to detect these puppies. Water pups are usually born alive, limp and weak, and they look like someone blew them up like a balloon. The dam was supplying the needed oxygen and nutrition through the placenta and cord, but soon after birth the medium to severely affected pup will suffocate by the pressure of the fluid. Some people report the mildly affected pups that survive the first two to three days turned out to be normal pups. Others say there were other underlying problems and their water pups died within the first week. The choice to try and save or to let the pup go without suffering will be between you and your vet, how much experience you have behind you, and if you are willing to put in the time PLUS be prepared for heartache. Trying to save these pups at this time is considered experimental. The cause and treatment of this condition are unknown at this time. Treatment: Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly affected pup. Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear airway. To encourage urination, run one or two fingers over the genitalia. Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium salt. The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide Lasix. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every —two to three minutes. Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid not too tight. Mildly affected pups can take one to two hours to breathe normally. Moderately affected pups take 90 minutes to four hours to breathe normally. Medium to severely affected pups are difficult to save; they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups have been known to split open at the abdomen just from handling. Autopsies have shown that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs cannot function, causing the pups to drown. Theories: An inuterine reaction to sodium, or an inability to process proteins. Hypothyrodism, as well as an inability of the lymphmatic system to drain effectively due to the anatomy. None of these ideas have ever been proven. Water puppies are often seen associated with a combination of vertebral column defects and often have further abnormalities, particularly cleft palates. Some Findings on Causes still not proven Congenital anasarca congenital generalized subcutaneous edema. The etiology of congenital anasarca is not well defined prenatal cardiovascular anomaly A traumatic origin with disruption of the placenta as a fetus suffering from anasarca is usually the sole occupant of a uterine horn filled with a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid. Could be caused by a virus, it has been attributed to the after-effects of the mother's oronasal infection with the minute virus during the last trimester of pregnancy associated with myocarditis. In the latter case, elasticity of the fetus' skin allows extravasation of transudate that is compensated for by the immediate supply of fluid via the umbilical cord. These puppies usually die within less than 36 hours. Prevention Low-salt diet. Reduce potential trauma isolate pregnant dams Autogenous minute virus vaccine in the case of suspicion of minute virus anarsarca en-zootic within the same breeding facility According to doctors, human babies can be born with this too. Human version: Fetal hydrops the cause is not yet known, but there are many theories In humans, edema is considered a congenital syndrome that happens in utero, and doctors figure it is most often caused by a virus slap cheek virus, and a human parvo-type virus B or it can be caused by a liver malfunction. In the U. Figures from Thailand suggest an estimated incidence of one case per , pregnancies. It is not a labor-induced issue, it happens prenatally for unknown reasons. There are photos of dwarf looking puppies that may fall into this category. If you suspect your dam may deliver water puppies consult your vet. Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese. Water Walrus Puppies Anasarca puppies Page 3 "My pup was a singleton , born to my girl who had had a litter the previous year, a litter of 6 normal healthy English Cocker Spaniel pups. This time we used the son of the boy we used last year. This was only his second litter too. His first a healthy litter of 8 pups. Sadly the pup was severely affected, as the pictures show. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of the valuable information I found on your website. While re-reading your posted information I came across the section on Water Puppies, and after being told that an x-ray showed that my female was carrying one puppy that appeared to be twice as large as the others, and what I thought to be a strange shiny look to her breast and nipple area, I began to worry. I contacted my daughter who will be a Dr. She explained that the occurrence of "Water Puppies" is rare and that I need not worry as pups of the same litter are often many different sizes. Maybe it was a coincidence that I came upon your site and all of the information you provided on "what to do when things go wrong".In June my female Labrador delivered three healthy pups followed by a "Water Puppy" which was very large and she was having great difficulty pushing her out. I followed the advice and " feathered " her cervix to see if it would help her labor progress, and it was almost instantly helpful. The fourth puppy water puppy was born dead, her skin was so swollen that it was split about her belly and across her face, it also appeared that she may have also had a clef palate. The fifth pup was born healthy with no complications. My own veterinarian had never heard of this before, and neither had my brother-in-law who is also a vet. I have included a picture that I took of the "Water Puppy" four hours after birth so you may share it with your readers. The swelling had decreased considerably and absorbed into the white towel that I had wrapped her in. This is a French Bulldog male puppy. He was delivered via c-section and lived about 30 minutes. I believe, according to the Dr. Never in my long-time practice have I seen anything like this. The mother dog did not have any unusual signs of any kind during pregnancy. Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery I bred my French Bulldog two years ago and she too had a water pup. She only had two puppies, one was perfectly fine and the other was a water puppy. Since we were already planning a C-section birth, we already knew there was a water puppy. The vet and his staff worked feverishly to revive this pup. Miraculously, the puppy made it and actually started to nurse. However, we noticed right away he could not keep the milk down. Every time it nursed, milk would come back up out of his nose and mouth. The vet took an X-ray and unfortunately found a really terrible birth defect; the esophagus was not connected to the stomach so the milk had nowhere to go but back out. My heart just sank knowing what a fighter this puppy was to be able to come out of that first ordeal of being a water puppy and now we had to put him down humanely so he would not starve to death. I too was put off from breeding after this as I got so attached to this puppy in such a short amount of time. Thank you again to everyone who shared their stories as I am still so sad from that event but know I'm certainly not alone. However, take heart, the other puppy is doing so well that he's even being shown and has won some ribbons to date! Medical articles It may sound like an animated character straight out of a Disney movie, but anasarca is, sadly, a life-threatening condition common in Bulldogs , but recognized in other breeds as well. It can theoretically affect any breed of dog, although it is most common in brachycephalic breeds, such as English and French Bulldogs , Bullmastiffs , Pugs , and Boston Terriers. Anasarca puppies, also referred to as walrus puppies, or occasionally water puppies, rubber puppies, or swimmer puppies, are born with an abnormal and lethal amount of fluid under their skin. Anasarca has been recognized for many years, yet as with many canine neonatal illnesses, there is a discouraging lack of knowledge of the true causes of anasarca, and much of what experts believe about it is speculative. When and Why It Occurs The condition appears to develop in the later part of gestation; puppies can be born up to four or five times their normal weight, as a result of the excess fluid. One or all of the puppies may be affected. Survival rates are low, and because of the abnormally large size of the puppies, a cesarean delivery is necessary. Experts consider anasarca to be a congenital problem—meaning it exists at or before birth—but it is unclear whether or not it is always inherited. Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are the only two breeds where anasarca is known to be a hereditary condition, although the mode of inheritance is unknown. In some breeds where the condition is rare, it is thought to be less likely to be inherited. The assumption is that if the genetic potential were there, breeders would be seeing a lot more of it. Environmental factors influencing the condition have been discussed and debated on the internet, but again this is speculative. For example, some breeders, whose dogs have produced anasarca puppies, suggest the culprit may be a high sodium diet, which they believe causes the female to retain water. Experts caution that there is no scientific data to substantiate environmental claims, including those of a high-sodium diet. A Lack of Symptoms To further complicate the matter, symptoms are limited or seemingly non-existent in most cases. This, understandably, catches many breeders and veterinarians off guard. Some experts say that one indicator may be additional weight gain by the female, as a result of the extra fluid. Others observe a listing or shifting of the puppies from one side to the other. Again, experts caution against reading too much into these observations, as there is no viable scientific data to substantiate these symptoms. Although survival rates are low, some water puppies do survive provided they receive immediate veterinary treatment. That's why it's a good idea to get pet insurance that covers hereditary conditions if you end up with a water puppy. Theoretically, surviving puppies should live an otherwise healthy, normal life. The problem is that many puppies do not survive, with many being euthanized shortly after birth. Therefore, as with most everything pertaining to neonatal illnesses, little or no scientific documentation exists regarding the long-term effects of congenital edema in puppies. Donate to Support this Research Program Area Abstract Dystocia is one of the most significant reproductive health concerns for dog owners and breeders. While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called "water" or "walrus" puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body. Normal delivery through the birth canal then becomes difficult or even impossible, oftentimes requiring intervention by caesarean section. Water puppies are generally stillborn or die shortly after birth. While anasarca affects many dog breeds, it appears to be more frequent in the brachycephalic breeds including the Bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Boston terrier and others. Due to the known genetic relationship between these breeds and the recurrence of anasarca puppies in specific matings, it is strongly believed that there is a significant genetic risk factor associated with this problem. Modern genetic tools and techniques have greatly improved the ability to identify specific variations in DNA which may be responsible for such traits. Thus, in an effort initiated by the Bulldog Club of America and Bulldog Club of America Charitable Health Fund, samples from newborn puppies with anasarca, their parents, and non-affected puppies have been collected, and will be utilized to analyze for a genetic basis of anasarca in an effort to develop a DNA-based test that can be used to screen for and reduce the incidence of this devastating disease. Publication s Hekman, J. S Research. Have you ever heard of Bulldog Water Puppies? Dog lovers rarely talk about water puppies despite being common. This is a potentially fatal condition that is commonly found in short-nosed dog breeds such as Bulldogs , French Bulldogs , Boston Terrier , Pugs , and more but it has also been seen in other dog breeds such a Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. Water Puppy Syndrome can affect only one or two puppies, or even the entire litter. These puppies are born suffering from Edema —an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in different organs, cavities or body tissues. Water puppies can be 2 to 4 times larger than normal pups in the litter. Sadly, most of them immediately pass away or are stillborn. Water Puppies who are born alive may be categorized as mild, medium or severely affected. Puppies born with Water Puppy Syndrome are also found to be suffering from a combination of vertebral column defects and other abnormalities like cleft palates. What causes Bulldog Water Puppies? In fact, pregnant dogs need plenty of water because the amniotic fluid changes constantly. Signs your Bulldog is going to have Water Puppies There is no surefire way to tell if your Bulldog is going to have water puppies. But here are some signs to watch out for: Drinking unusually larger amounts of water, Shiny-looking something like onion-skin teats and surrounding tissue, Nipple-discharge early in pregnancy. An ultrasound is thought to be a better tool to detect these Water Puppies. Do Bulldog Water Puppies live long? Survival rates in Bulldog Water Puppies are very low. Sometimes, veterinarians recommend putting the puppy down. But some Bulldog breeders report that mild to medium Bulldog Water Puppies who survived the first two to three days grew up to be normal puppies. However, most of these survivors have underlying health problems like cleft palates. A Bulldog breeder also told Bulldog Guide that a couple of Bulldog Water Puppies he took care of had one odd thing in common. One of the surviving Anasarca puppies Toto took care of. He is now 3 years old. The report written by Dr. Constanza Bini et al. But after performing a C-section on the 55th day of pregnancy, they found out that two of the Bulldog puppies have different degrees of subcutaneous edema. Unfortunately, the first and biggest puppy they took out was dead. The second puppy, a male Bulldog, was suffering from mild Anasarca and fortunately survived after performing a series of treatments. The third Bulldog was a normal and healthy pup. Despite managing to live, Bulldog Water Puppy survivors are recommended to be neutered or spayed and spared from breeding. How to help Bulldog Water Puppies? There is no sure way to treat and save an Anasarca from death. But veterinarians have been performing a series of procedures to help Anasarca or Water puppies. Water Puppies must be given treatment as soon as possible. Then, stimulate his genitalia to encourage him to urinate. Bini have been using Lasix, a brand name of the chemical furosemide. This chemical is a diuretic-saluretic, which slows down the re-absorption of sodium. Furosemide must be given immediately intravenously or intramuscularly to the puppy after birth. The administration of Furosemide can be done again every 30 to 45 minutes. But never do this more than three times as it can cause dehydration. Stimulating the pups to pee is also important and must be done every two to three minutes. The vet can also use elastic bandages gently wrapped around the pups to help push out fluid. Mildly-affected Water Puppies can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally while moderately-affected water pups take longer — about one and a half hours to four hours — to breathe normally. Severely affected water puppies are very difficult to save and they drown from the fluids and die just within 30 minutes after birth. Severely-affected Water Puppies are known to split in half the abdomen just from handling. How to prevent your Bulldog from having water babies Since the real cause of this condition is still not known, there is no surefire way to prevent it. However, veterinarians and experts recommend the following: Feed a pregnant Bulldog low-salt diet, Reduce — if not remove — anything that can cause potential trauma, Administer autogenous minute virus vaccine if minute virus is suspected. How to Participate in Anasarca Research Bulldog owners and breeders are encouraged to participate in genetic research to identify and determine a marker for Anasarca. The researchers of the study are requesting DNA samples from affected puppies and parents who produced Anasarca or Water Puppies. This research is being conducted at the University of Illinois. If you wish to be involved with the study, you may contact Dr. Michael at mwhughes usc. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.

They are simultaneously wonderful family pets—thanks to their friendly, tolerant attitude—and capable, intelligent working dogs. These sturdy, medium-sized dogs grow to about 55—75 pounds and typically live to be about 10—12 years old. Outgoing, trustworthy, eager-to-please, and easy-to-train, they are especially popular with families with young children. Goldens often maintain their fun-loving puppy attitudes and signature smile into adulthood. Part of the sporting dog group, golden retrievers are active dogs that require at least an hour of daily exercise. They live up to their name; they love retrieving just about anything thrown for them. This makes them excellent hunting companions and skilled service dogs. They love to eat, run, spend time with their owners, and even participate in obedience and agility events. Their coloring ranges from light golden to cream, and dark golden to golden, and their physique can vary from broad and dense to leaner and more sporty. According to AKC standards, goldens move with a smooth, powerful gait, and the feathery tail is carried, as breed fanciers say, with a "merry action. Thanks to their breeding as hunting and waterfowl-retrieving dogs in the Scottish Highlands, their outer coat is dense and repels water. They also have a thick undercoat. Their coats can vary in texture from wavy to straight. Heavy feathering appears on their chest, the backs of their legs, and tail. Temperament In general, golden retrievers are outgoing, playful, and gentle. They are also friendly, intelligent, and devoted. As they get older, most golden retrievers become docile and calm. Bred to be working retrievers, goldens have a lot of energy and require a lot of activity. They are best suited for owners with an active lifestyle and they thrive in a home where someone is around during the day to spend time with them. They don't do well when left at home on their own; they love their humans too much. Their happy demeanor often draws attention from other people when you are out and about—goldens get along well with strangers and other dogs. While they are not considered good guard dogs—they'd be more likely to show an intruder where the treats are than send the intruder running—golden retrievers are excellent service dogs thanks to their loyalty, intelligence, and stable temperament. They see themselves as part of the family and need to be treated as such. Luckily, goldens are not bothered by noise, commotion, and activity, making them very tolerant of children. Golden retrievers also take a "the more the merrier" approach to having other pets in the home. With proper introductions and training, goldens can be trusted with other dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. A golden retriever would do well reigning over a large fenced-in yard , so if you don't have a lot of outdoor space or you live in an apartment, make sure you get your golden outside regularly. A lot," Steen says. Owners should get used to having a fair amount of dog hair on clothing and furniture around the home. They have a thick, water-repellant double coat that sheds moderately in the winter and summer, and heavily in the spring and fall. However, if you brush your golden daily, you can prevent tangling and remove some dead hair before it covers everything in sight. Baths can also help and are recommended about once a month, but make sure the golden is fully dry before brushing begins. Golden retrievers will also need their nails trimmed about once or twice a month. A good indicator of when they need to be trimmed is when you can hear them clicking on the floor. Teeth should also be brushed at least two or three times a week. Ear checks are important as well; goldens have fold-over ears, which create an environment that encourages bacteria and fungus to grow. Look for redness or a bad odor and simply wipe out the outer ear with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to help prevent infections. Exercise is an essential part of a golden retriever's day. At least one hour a day of rigorous activity is necessary, even if that happens over several different outings or play times throughout the day. Goldens can be taken on long runs , bike rides, hikes, and swims. They also enjoy hunting trips, field trials, and other canine sports like agility, obedience, and tracking. A golden that doesn't get enough exercise is likely to exhibit undesirable behaviors like digging and chewing. Mental challenges, such as learning tricks and playing with puzzle toys, are also appealing to goldens, but should never replace physical activity. Take it easy with exercise in a golden retriever's first two years of life, as their growth plates are still forming. Don't go for long, strenuous runs or hikes until the dog is fully grown, and always opt for grass over concrete. Early socialization and puppy training classes are important with golden retrievers. Puppies should be exposed to a wide variety of people, places, and situations to help them become well-adjusted in their young life. When it comes to feeding time , owners need to help golden retrievers manage their intake; they have a tendency to become overweight. Food should be measured out and given twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. Dog treats should be given in moderation. If you're unsure whether your golden retriever is overweight, give him the eye test and the hands-on test. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. If you can't, he likely needs less food and more exercise. Chat with your vet about the best course of action. According to Steen, they are a generally healthy breed, but goldens are at a slightly increased risk of hip dysplasia and cancer when compared to other dogs. Other health conditions, although not particularly common, include elbow dysplasia, cataracts , progressive retinal atrophy —or gradual deterioration of the retina—hypothyroidism, gastric dilatation-volvulus otherwise known as bloat , and allergies. Golden retrievers should also have their ears checked often and teeth brushed regularly for optimum health. History Dudley Marjoribanks, the first Lord of Tweedmouth, developed golden retrievers in the mid-to-late s. Although at one time a rumor indicated that golden retrievers descended from Russian sheep dogs, they were, in fact, bred in the Scottish Highlands. Marjoribanks bred the dogs for more than 50 years to create an ideal gundog—he was an avid hunter of waterfowl. Tweedmouth wanted a dog suited to the rainy climate and rugged terrain of the area, so he crossed his "yellow retriever" with a breed that is now extinct, the Tweed water spaniel. He also wanted the dog to be even-tempered in the home. A golden retriever was first shown at the British dog show in .The Kennel Club in England officially recognized the golden retriever as a distinct breed in .At that time, they were classified as "retriever — yellow or golden. The goal is to show your dog that all people and pets should be engaged with calmly and respectfully. This is a very dominant breed and so you should take the time to socialize it early to avoid that behavior as much as possible. Socialization will help the dog develop an even temper. This is an important part of raising an American Bulldog. Without socialization, your new dog may be suspicious of all new people and animals, which can lead to unwanted behaviors, such as biting. You can socialize your dog by taking it to public areas and allowing it to have positive experiences with new people and pets. If at a dog park, slowly introduce your dog to the other dogs and people around you while still on the leash. If your dog seems to be friendly, comfortable, and welcomes the interaction, praise it for its good behavior and gradually allow more interaction off-leash and in larger areas. If visiting a breeder to pick out a pup, there are some specific things to look for that can indicate socialization has already begun. Observe how the puppy interacts with its littermates as well as its parents. A shy, withdrawn, or overly cautious pup is probably not well socialized and has not been exposed to a lot of different situations. Remember that when you get a dog you want to avoid bad breeding situations, for example puppy mills. Not only do unethical breeders have inhumane conditions for their dogs and usually inbreed them, but they do not do the early training and socializing of their dogs that is imperative to raising a well-adjusted dog. Each dog will develop their social skills at their own speed, so go as slow as needed. As your dog becomes more socialized and comfortable with new things, you will see that it develops an overall better temperament. Don't forget to introduce cats, children, and anything else that you want your dog to be familiar and comfortable with as well. Take your introductions slow! When introducing your dog to a cat, don't let the animals see each other right off the bat. Keep them in separate rooms and allow them to smell each other under the closed door. After they get used to each other's smell, let them see each other from a distance. Over several days let them get closer to each other on a regular basis, all while keeping a hold of both. Also, know that in some areas there are legal liabilities related to owning this particular breed. There have also been cases of homeowner insurance policies being denied and the breed is actually banned from ownership in some areas. Research the situation in your area before committing to this breed. American Bulldogs are a very intelligent, strong-willed, and frequently stubborn breed. This can make them a challenge to train, especially for first-time dog owners. They will need to know that you are the dominant one in the relationship and training them will require a lot of dedication and patience. It will be beneficial for you and your new pup to train with voice commands as well as hand signals. The upside to training with both of these commands is that if you are in a situation where your dog can't hear you, they can still see what you are asking them to do and can react accordingly. Giving your dog treats or praise when it does something right will help reinforce the behavior. Positive reinforcement goes a long way with this breed, as they enjoy pleasing their owners. Since this breed loves attention from the people that they are bonded with, ignoring your dog when they exhibit bad behavior will work better than other disciplinary measures. When trained and socialized well, American Bulldogs have the tools they need to judge a situation and decide when everything is OK or when they may need to act on their natural guarding instincts. During any sort of training, if you feel overwhelmed or your dog doesn't seem to be learning at a reasonable pace, consult a professional. They will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may be having about the process or techniques that you are using. Contact How to Train an American Bulldog: Beginners Guide Training any dog, no matter the age takes patience and discipline for both you and your dog. While you may think you need to wait until they are older to train them, it is actually better for your dog to start training as early as weeks. The earlier you introduce a schedule and regular routines, the easier it will be for you as they grow and adapt to normal life changes. The first year can be difficult and frustrating, but understand that you are building a foundation for the behavior you desire for the rest of their life. How to Train an American Bulldog? You will need to stay calm and show no aggression as the bulldog will mimic you or become defensive. Start by clearly saying the command you wish to teach. Demonstrate the command, or show your dog how. For example, if you are teaching your bulldog to sit, gently push down on his behind while holding your arm underneath his front legs until they are in a sitting position. Give positive reinforcements such as a treat. Repeat this process a few times, or until your American bulldog looses interest. This may take a few training sessions. Be patient and calm with your American bulldog while teaching commands. We will discuss commands they should be able to learn based on age and when to start incorporating more training and socialization. Training By Stages When training your American bulldog, you have to be prepared to teach them in stages. Attempting to train them on several skills all at once will be too much for the dog to learn and will only result in you and them becoming very frustrated. For your dog to successfully learn skills well and for maximum retention, you have to space out their training through their first year. You want to start with simple things and slowly progress to harder, more complex ideas and tricks. Potty Training your American Bulldog Puppy A good place to start training is obviously potty training during this early stage for your American Bulldog. Best practices would be: Expect to take an American bulldog to the potty every mins for the first few weeks until they start getting control of their bladder. Remember to be patient during this time. Try to keep them on hard surfaces if possible while indoors to make cleaning any accidents up easy. It will take a few weeks for an American bulldog puppy to pick up the habit. But continue to demonstrate positive reinforcement to encourage proper behavior while the puppy gets a hang of this new routine and learns how to control their bladder. Also be mindful that during this infancy stage, the American bulldog puppy will also need to be fed more frequently due to rapid growth and exertion of energy. This is normal to expect at this time of their life. If your puppy knows how their day will go, they can prepare for things and learn how to wait for food and bathroom breaks. You will need to be completely focused on this routine. Try not to plan any trips or big events during this time. While you may have different schedules every day, try to keep it consistent as much as you can. Try to wake up around the same time and go to bed around the same time so everything in between can be consistent as well. This will help your dog eat and sleep well for the rest of their lives when starting this routine early. You, of course, want to start simple and work your way into harder things. As you begin to train your puppy, keep in mind that they are very young and their energy levels are high for short periods of time, they will get tired quickly. You also need to remember that they do not know how to act in any situation, and it is your job to teach them; this is why you are training them. See also Are Iguanas Dangerous to Cats? Investigating the Risks of Owning an Iguana as a Pet Socialization As early as you can, find friends that have small dogs or puppies that you can regularly get together with, so your dog can learn how to act around other animals. Your dog will learn better social skills when they are commonly around the same few animals rather than random interactions. Early socialization will help your dogs learn that other animals and humans are generally not a threat. It will be easier to show your puppy this, at this young stage, when they are still learning and exploring their environment. American bulldogs are large and strong, so it is important to teach them not to jump on or lunge at other people and animals. This will also allow you to ensure the dogs that you pick will treat your dog well rather than fearing aggression issues. When owners and new friends are calm, your puppy will be in a better state to learn and explore. This will create such a good atmosphere for you and others whenever you come in contact with other animals. Grooming Preparation American bulldogs need consistent cleaning. Due to the regularity that this needs to happen, you need to get your dog used to grooming. You can simply get them used to you touching their face and petting gently in the early ages. Once they are used to that, add in a wet towel or paper towel and slowly start the grooming process. American bulldogs are easier to clean than English bulldogs because they have less wrinkles and more flexibility to clean themselves. For a quick tutorial on grooming, you can check out our YouTube video where I demonstrate a full grooming of our English bulldog, Daisy. You can begin teaching your dog basic commands once they hit six months or earlier if you feel like they are ready for it. Some basic commands to start teaching your dog are: Sit. Do American Bulldogs Bark a Lot? Therefore the following timeline should be followed to properly train them to behave appropriately. Early socialization teaches your dog that other animals and humans are not inherently dangerous. Experts recommend at least friends from smaller dogs to other dogs within the family or as outside acquaintances. Starting small will help your puppy cope with the new friends. Also, instead of random interactions, your dog will learn greater social skills if they are frequently around the same few animals. When considering a playmate for your puppy, make sure it has already been socialized. A socialized puppy will make your dog feel secure and safe. Allow your dog to socialize at its own pace. Please do not force the puppy into socializing as it will stress it, causing it to act aggressively, resulting in injuries and traumatic memory. American bulldogs are sensitive to emotions and show their uneasy behavior through aggression or chewing the closest objects. If you have no choice but to leave your dog at home while you go to work or school, get them an interactive play toy that will keep them occupied for prolonged periods. Interactive toys are a great way to keep your Bulldog from chewing your furniture. Step 3: Potty Training Teaching your bulldog puppy to potty in one location or outside is the third most crucial step in the training. Take Your American Bulldog Puppy Out Regularly Take the dog out every hour to the spot where you want the dog to excrete during the day for several days. So if your dog scratches the foot of the door or whines around the house, it means it wants to go for a potty. During training, the location plays a huge role, and it will help your Bulldog comply and be active during the day. This will reduce the chances of them going to the toilet inside and teach them where they should go. In addition, if your American Bulldog gets lost, he can always find his way home if he is familiar with the location. Puppy Stage: By 6 Months Your Bulldog puppy should be able to socialize peacefully with other dogs, chew on appropriate toys, and be ready to begin basic obedience training at this age. Teaching your pup to regulate the force of a bite is crucial. Take advantage of the stop in behavior by providing the puppy with something appropriate to chew on right away. Bones, chew toys, Kongs, squeaky toys, and stuffed animals are all good choices. Spaying and neutering are also methods to control aggression and other complications in American bulldogs. Spaying is done on female puppies, while neutering is done on male puppies. Related: When do Puppies Calm Down? Step 5: Teach Basic Commands Start teaching your dog with basic commands such as sit, stand, speak, rollover, and high five. Instead of negative or disciplinary reinforcements, use positive reinforcements. Step 6: Exercise Your Bulldog In Cool Temperatures American bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed due to their short muzzles, making breathing difficult on hot and humid days. If your dog is panting during training, take a break in a cool room. In addition, having a water bottle for your dog during training is highly recommended. Growth Stage: One Year Your Bulldog should know basic obedience and be acclimated to a daily feeding and exercise routine by the time they are a year old. American Bulldogs are prone to many health issues, and the most common among them are obesity and Hip Dysplasia. Engaging your American Bulldog in physical activities regularly helps to avoid these. In addition, there are numerous dog sports available to keep your Bulldog busy. Daily Walk A daily walk is necessary for an American Bulldog to release pent-up energy and maintain his health. The sights, sounds, and smells that your Ambull encounters during the walk will help to stimulate their minds. Because an American Bulldog can walk vast distances, the duration of the walk is only limited by your time and energy. Therefore, the minimal amount of time should be 30 to 45 minutes every day. High Intensity Activities In addition to the daily walk, it is critical to engage them in other activities that will tire and occupy them. Shorter, higher-intensity activities, as well as muscle-building and strength workouts, are examples. Training your pup with a flirt pole can help control its impulses. Flirt poles for dogs are made up of a handle, a pole, a cord, and a toy or lure that looks like a prey animal, similar to cat feather teasers. Flirt poles can provide them with an additional challenge by allowing them to chase a variety of various toys that you can attach. As your puppy chases the bait, you move it around the ground in circles or different directions. Playing Fetch with your Ambull is another fantastic way to release pent-up energy. This game can be played for hundreds of tosses by American Bulldogs, who are known for their love of balls and toys. In your backyard, set up an agility or obstacle course. You may make your agility with stuff you already have or purchase reasonably priced agility sets. Tug-of-war is a definite favorite of all strong dogs. To expend more energy, make them kneel and pull back. Ascertain that this is a managed game in which they only release when you want them to. A spring pole is famous among dogs that love tug-of-war. A spring pole is just a spring linked to a rope that swings from a tree branch or beam and has a lure or toy at the end. Mental Stimulation One of the most common reasons for behavior problems in dogs is boredom and high energy levels. Destructive behavior, annoying barking, digging, and even fleeing are examples of this. The American Bulldog is also a breed with a high level of intelligence. Therefore, to avoid boredom, it is critical to provide mental stimulation and difficulties. How to Make Your Training Effective? The American Bulldog is a challenging dog to train in the very beginning. However, once a command is mastered, the American Bulldog remembers the training well. Confine Your Pet Into A Training Area Allocating a confined space such as the backyard or an empty room for your Bulldog will reduce distraction during the early stage of training and help him concentrate. Then, when your Bulldog is familiar with the location and can do everything you command without hesitation, you can move on to the next level or location. It requires an enormous level of patience. At first, your Bulldog will not be obedient to you, but with repetition, your Bulldog will learn to follow your commands. Sticking To A Training Schedule Independent training can get messy, and you may end up repeating the training you did months ago. For example, some respond to aggressive training, while others learn to be obedient even without a leash. Hence, you may have to adopt different techniques in different situations. During training sessions, you must use positive reinforcement. If your dog has trouble hearing you at times, this is where hand gestures come in handy as your dog will be able to see you and follow your commands. Keep Lessons Short American bulldogs have a short attention span. As a result, avoid training for long periods. Consult A Professional Keep in touch with the local veterinarian as it will help you foresee any health-related issues that may arise in your dog. Also, consulting a professional trainer will help you gain tips on getting your American Bulldog under control. The pup is sitting upright with his knees flat to his sides and the feet are neatly tucked underneath. But sometimes the positioning of the dog sit might change and before you know it, the dog sits sloppy on your feet. To owners, it may seem like the dog sits weirdly, but often this is completely normal behavior. I will go into detail below, the reasons might surprise you. In case you ever wondered if that or any other dog position has a specific meaning, I will tell you, yes it does. The Puppy Sit Photo by Steshka Willems on Pexels The puppy sit — also called lazy sit, sloppy sit, or frog sit — is a phenomenon that occurs most often as the name suggests in young puppies. The dog sits with his legs splayed to one or both sides and flops into a sloppy posture. But why is it seen so commonly in puppies and is it something you need to worry about? When puppies go through these awkward growth stages you will find them running around with their limps flying to the sides and sometimes they just take this lazy stance. Puppies are very flexible because their joints are not yet connected and the bones are soft, leading to uncoordinated walking and sitting. A constant sloppy posture may need to be discouraged with techniques that I will explain below in order to prevent damaging the joints. Health Issues May Be the Cause Your dog assuming the lazy dog sitting position or the sloppy sit might point towards an underlying medical condition. At the very least, you should take measures to prevent these from happening. Conditions like hip dysplasia or luxating patella commonly result in different symptoms including the puppy sit to soothe sore joints. Arthritis or spinal problems prevent your dog from adapting a straight sit. A serious trauma from a car accident will also cause damage to the skeleton which could be permanent or a passing problem. Routinely sitting in a sloppy posture is probably a sign that something is wrong and causing your dog discomfort but what steps should you take in such a case and will it resolve without action? More on that at the end of this article. Your dog chilling in this position once in a while is probably a result of him imitating you. Some dogs also adapt to this posture because they like your reaction to it when you burst out in laughter. Keep in mind that any sitting position should be closely monitored and you should look for cues of discomfort. This is the only position that should be taught to puppies from the beginning and should always be encouraged to prevent back pain. Just like humans, dogs should take care of their posture and an effortless straight sit is a sign of a healthy spine. The leader always chooses the best resting spot so sitting beside you must be the best option and it may even get your attention. There is nothing you need to be worrying about when it comes to this position. If you are annoyed by the lack of personal space, provide your dog with a stuffed Kong and place it in his dog bed. Dog Sitting On Your Face Placing their bum on top of you is a type of scent marking, your dog simply wants to claim you as his pack member. It can also be a weird form of cuddling with the goal to be as close to you as possible. Similar to the human sit, your dog perhaps wants to get a certain reaction out of you. What to do: In the case of learned behavior, you will want to stop giving the reaction that you previously displayed. This might eliminate the behavior altogether. If your dog is just looking for a warm cuddly place, an orthopedic dog bed with soft blankets should do the trick. Redirecting your dog onto his dog bed may also be an option if the behavior persists. Dog Sitting On Other Dogs Well, some dogs like to cuddle a lot with their humans but what does it mean when your dog is sitting or laying on top of other dogs? If there are no particular signs of dominance, then they could simply be playing. Playful behavior is always relaxed and both dogs will feel comfortable with the situation. The sooner you catch the issue the better his prognosis will be. If your dog gets the unfortunate diagnosis of a skeleton issue, your vet will probably recommend physiotherapy or hydrotherapy for healthy exercise without straining the joints. Pain medication or surgery may be necessary for more serious problems. However, some breeds are prone to developing joint problems and my Rottweiler is among these breeds. There are various other options like the nature-based green lip mussel powder or general joint supplements to help with preventing joint issues. Not all work equally well though so research beforehand. Provide your dog with a comfortable dog bed — an orthopedic dog bed like mentioned above might be worth the investment. If your dog is healthy, encourage the right sitting positions. After the vet examined your pup and declares him healthy, then you can start working on a proper sit. If you have an adult dog, you can also redirect your dog into a straight sit or lie down whenever you see him sitting sloppy. These are only slight corrections and not in the slightest invasive. Once your dog connects the right sitting position with a reward, he will do it much more on his own which can make this little exercise really fun. If your dog shows any sign of illness, call your vet. Post navigation. The way that your dog sits can be a positive sign. For example, it may mean they are trying to form a deeper bond with you. Otherwise, it may be a sign they have some underlying health conditions. This can be quite dependent on age. If puppies sit sloppily with outward splaying limbs, this is completely normal because of their flexible limbs. Older dogs using this sitting position may be a cause for concern and may be worth checking with a vet. Dog Sitting Position Meaning The Puppy Sitting Position Also known as the frog sit, sloppy sit, or lazy sit, this is known as the puppy sit because younger dogs sit this way the most. The cause for concern here could be due to a number of reasons: Arthritis Spine pain Inflammation of muscles They may be in this sitting position to relieve some of the symptoms of pain in their back, joints, or muscles. If you begin to notice the early warning sign of them sitting in a different way, make sure to look for some other changed behaviors. There are two other common, yet very serious conditions that would cause a dog to sit in different ways, which I have listed below and is important to get diagnosed as early as possible to alleviate their symptoms. Hip Dysplasia While hip dysplasia will begin in puppyhood, dogs may not display clinical symptoms until they are older. It will often take years of gradual bone degeneration before a dog becomes symptomatic. The inflammation causes pain in their hip joints , resulting in dogs changing the way they sit to relieve the symptoms, or their gait may change when walking, or how they move in general. Torn cruciate ligament If your dog has torn their cruciate ligament , they will refrain from extending or stretching their sore leg, resulting in them sitting in this way also. You will also notice a change in the way they walk and will appear lame, so watch out for this too. Dogs Sitting Like Humans It can be quite humorous to see our doing sitting like humans do, or engaging in human-like activities! When their actions like this are met with laughter and adoration, this is seen as positive reinforcement which will probably cause them to repeatedly sit like this. Some larger dog breeds who have longer legs may find this way easier to sit, or have realised that sitting like this takes some of the pressure off their lower spine. You can be proactive by observing them as they move about, and if you see them getting up or walking in a stiff manner, then maybe there might be something wrong. The Straight Sit The straight sit can be recognized by an elongated spine sitting upwards and symmetrically with a knee on either side and their feet underneath them. In this position, your dog has a straight spine which is very good for their posture. The straight sit is actually a good way for your dog to sit and is often taught to puppies when they are young. Like humans, dogs benefit hugely from practicing good posture. If your dog sits with a straight sit, they are showing signs of a healthy spine with good posture. This is why obedience schools always use this position for dogs to sit in. Your dog will view you as their role model and leader, and the resting spot that you choose, in their eyes, is the one for the pack. So naturally, they are going to stay close, and even snuggle close to you to get your attention. If your dog is sitting at your feet, they are using this as a sign of bonding, and want to stay close to you. They could also be asking for pets. Dogs Sitting by Your Face If you find your dog trying to sit their rear on your face, this means that they are trying to scent mark. They would like to claim you to be a part of their pack. This odd type of cuddling is just a sign that your dog wants to be close to you. While this can sometimes mean dominance, it is quite unlikely this is what is meant. Most cases will find that your dog is just trying to form a closer bond with you. This may also be a way that your dog is trying to get a reaction from you by engaging in some strange behavior. If you are wanting your dog to quit this behavior, you need to communicate that this behavior is not acceptable. Make sure you do not encourage them to do it again in the future. Your Dog Sitting on Other Dogs There is two reasons why your dog will sit on or cuddle other dogs, which are either dominance or play. While you might think that this need to assert dominance is a personality trait of your dog, it is in fact natural instinct. In cases like this, when referring to dominance it is actually just the social relationship in which dogs have with each other. These signs of dominance may be displayed by putting their paw or head on top of another dogs back. This could also be meant as a playful gesture. If both dogs seem relaxed and comfortable then this is nothing to worry about. Dogs can end up sitting in a variety of different positions, particularly when they are playing. Below is a list of the most common sleeping positions: Lions Pose If your dog is sleeping with their front two paws outstretched and their head resting on or between their paws, then they are sleeping in lions pose. This is typical of a dog who is resting and has not entered a deep sleep. Superman This sleeping pose is easier for smaller dogs to do. This is when they lie on their stomach and stretch their legs out in front and behind. This is similar to a superman flying through the air. This position allows relaxed dogs to stretch out in a comfortable manner. Curled Up in a Ball Some dogs just prefer to sleep like this. It could also be that your dog is trying to make themselves as small as possible for safety reasons. This is a common sleeping position of dogs who are in shelters. Side Sleeping If your dog lies on their side with their legs outstretched, this means that they are comfortable in its surroundings. This position makes them vulnerable. So if they had any concerns about where they were, they would not be lying in this relaxed position. Dog sitting position meaning: Sitting and sleeping positioned explained The way in which your dog sleeps and sits is a good indicator of their state of mind and emotional well-being. A vigilant pet parent will use these as a good early warning sign for more sinister complications of their dogs health. This is particularly useful for dog breeds that are more prone to having issues with their joints. If you notice some of these signs, it would be well worth contacting your veterinarian. Dog sitting position meaning — FAQs Why does my dog sit with his legs to the side? If your dog sits with their hind legs sideways, as opposed to having its legs under its hips, it is considered puppy sitting or sloppy sitting. While this is not a problem for younger dogs because they have flexible limbs, older dogs should sit more straight up. Sitting in this sloppy manner can indicate numerous problems. What does my dog sitting position mean? The best position for your dog to sit in is when they sit squarely with a straight spine. They will have a knee on either side and their feet underneath their knees, in a symmetrical way. Related posts:. This correct position right photo allows the dog to engage all his knee, thigh and gluteal muscles properly when standing up. Improper sitting form left photo with legs splayed wide, hocks spreading out to the sides uneven left vs. What can I do? First and most important: always exclude possible physical limitations. Past injuries, possible weaknesses, chronic problems in joints or soft tissues of the hind limbs can result in compensatory changes and losing the ability to sit properly. Dogs with chronic unaddressed issues in the knee or hock joints often end up with reduced joint range of motion, and therefore lose the ability to fully flex these joints. Bad hip conditions create a vicious circle of pain and disuse of this body part, resulting in a weak core and hind limb musculature with hocks splaying out to the side while sitting. Spinal issues lumbosacral diseases, spinal injuries can also elicit painful response. Forcing the dog in correct sit when it is not desirable, or if the dog is physically not able to or ready yet , can quickly do more harm than good and requires professional help. Therefore you should always consult with an orthopedic vet and certified rehab professional to address the issue properly and help your dog regain these abilities through an appropriate individualized approach. What kind of ground is your dog sitting on? Sitting on slippery surfaces such as tiled or hardwood floors does not provide enough grip for your dog to keep the legs in proper position, let alone load the hind end to stand up. If your dog does not have a known history of past injuries or joint diseases, and is sitting sloppily on non-slip flooring, a lack of strength might be the reason! Weak core and hind limb musculature prevents the dog from maintaining a good posture. Strengthening exercises are definitely a great way to improve the overall physical condition and well being of your four-legged companion. Obese or overweight dogs also lack the needed strength to sit correctly. What about puppies? Well, young puppies might not be really able to perform a proper sit just yet, let alone work out. But don't worry, possibilities for proper sitting come with growing up when they develop enough body awareness and strength. Here are a few tips that can help your dog achieve a better sitting form: Work on smaller surfaces Sitting on a reasonably smaller surface itself usually promotes better sitting position and thus helps strengthen correct muscle groups. We can use a slightly raised platform or balance pad to start with. Use a narrow path Work with the dog on a narrow plank, just wide enough to promote good position of limbs, but narrow enough to prevent turning the feet out. Have you ever wondered why your dog sits weird with one leg kicked out or both of his knees bent outward in a cross-legged position? Normally, a dog should sit upright with his knees flat to the side and feet neatly tucked underneath his hips. However, some dogs just flop to the floor like they are tired and end up sitting in some rather weird positions. While it may seem that your dog is sitting weird, this can be a completely normal canine behavior. In fact, strange sitting positions are quite common in puppies and are a completely normal part of the growing stage. However, while the puppy sit is normal for puppies, in adult dogs, it can be a sign that something is wrong. If you have a young puppy that sits weirdly from time to time, there is nothing you should worry about. But if your older dog flops into a lazy sit on a regular basis, you should take him to see a vet as soon as possible. In most cases, a dog that is experiencing pain or a health problem will feel more comfortable sitting in a weird position than in a normal sit. For some reason, dogs with joint and bone problems experience relief while sitting in strange positions. In this article, I will tell you everything you need to know about the puppy sit and list the most common reasons behind this strange behavior. Dogs have many interesting habits and are known to do some rather strange things. You have probably noticed that your dog is exhibiting some weird behaviors such as chasing his own tail, barking at his reflections, sitting on your feet, and walking in circles before lying down. However, the thing that most owners find the strangest is the infamous lazy sit. Have you ever seen your dog sag into a sit like he is tired? Or has he ever flopped onto one hip and kicked out his other leg to the side, like he is trying to chill out? Or does your dog ever sit cross-legged with both of his knees splayed on the side and toes almost touching? All of these weird sitting positions are called puppy sit, but you might have heard some people refer to it as lazy, sloppy, or frog sit. If you have just brought a new puppy home , you have probably noticed that he is sitting in many different positions, with limbs spayed in every possible direction. While the lazy sit is quite common in puppies, it is completely normal to wonder if there is something wrong with your new pooch. All puppies go through a growth stage when they look extremely cute and bit awkward running around with limbs flying all over the place. But no matter how cute your puppy looks in this position, most new dog owners assume the worst. Lengthy potty training sessions or too much play can be tiring for a young puppy and may cause your pooch to flop down into a lazy sit more often. If there is a chance your pup is too tired from his daily activities, try to keep his training sessions shorter and more fun to prevent fatigue. However, if your puppy continues to flop into a lazy sit once he reaches maturity, then there is a chance that he is suffering from an underlying medical problem. Underlying Health Problem A lazy sit is a perfectly normal sitting position for puppies, but in adult dogs, it is usually a sign of underlying health problems. Your dog might be sitting weird to relieve pressure from his joints, back, or to avoid aggravating a sore spot on some other part of his body. If your adult dog slips into a lazy sit every once in a while, this might be a sign of a temporary issue, such as muscle soreness after a vigorous play session. However, if your adult dog is sitting like this all the time, you should have him checked out by a vet. Many potential health issues can cause your dog to have trouble sitting normally, but luckily, most are treatable. Listed below are a few health problems that might be the reason why your dog has trouble sitting normally: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a painful skeletal disease that is often seen in large and giant breeds such as Great Danes , but it can also occur in smaller breeds. In dogs with this condition, the ball and the socket of the hip joint do not fit properly and they rub and grind against each other whenever the dog moves. The grinding causes wear and tear to the joint, which causes a lot of pain and discomfort to the dog. Dogs with hip dysplasia usually have trouble walking, getting up, jumping, and sitting normally. Most dogs with hip dysplasia start sitting in weird positions to relieve soreness and pain caused by this condition. However, once diagnosed, hip dysplasia can be treated surgically or managed with pain-relieving medication. If your dog sits weird on a regular basis, you should take him to your vet for a checkup. And if it turns out that your pooch has hip dysplasia, your vet will suggest treatment options and prescribed meds that will reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Knee Problems Conditions such as luxating patella and torn cruciate ligament are extremely painful knee problems that can cause your dog to have trouble sitting. Luxating patella is often seen in small breed dogs and happens when a kneecap moves from its normal location. If your dog is sitting on the side and is also limping on a rear leg, he might have a torn cruciate ligament. This condition is usually caused by trauma from an injury or a degeneration of the ligaments within the joint. A torn cruciate ligament is an extremely painful condition that usually happens when a dog is running and suddenly changes its position. If you suspect your pooch is experiencing any type of knee problems, you should take him to a vet for a checkup. Back Pain Back pain is another common health problem that might cause your dog to sit with his legs splayed to the sides. Dogs who are developing intervertebral disk disease or herniated disk may have trouble sitting normally. In these cases, a sloppy sit might be more convenient for your dog and help alleviate soreness and back pain. If your dog is suffering from any one of these two conditions, he might also show symptoms of hind leg paralysis, lameness, loss of coordination, and pain. To prevent further damage to the spine, you should take your dog to the vet as soon as you notice any symptoms of back pain. Impacted anal glands can become abscessed and very painful if not diagnosed and treated in time. While sitting weirdly is one of the signs that your pooch has inflamed anal glands , he might also scoot, bite or lick his rear end, and have constipation. Luckily, impacted glands are very easy to treat with antibiotics. Once the inflammation subsides and your dog starts to feel better, he will no longer have to use a lazy sit to relieve pain and will start to sit completely normally. If you have caught your dog sitting on the sofa with his legs extended out front like a human, chances are that he is copying you. If your dog sits like this often and you notice any signs of back pain, stiffness, or trouble getting up, schedule an appointment with your vet. A who dog just flops into a sit with his legs splayed sideways rather than beneath his hips or appears to go almost cross-legged is sitting in a puppy sit. However, adult dogs should be more stable and a puppy sit can indicate many different problems. In most cases, a dog will use a sloppy sit as a way to alleviate soreness and joint pain. Hip dysplasia, knee problems, back pain, and inflamed anal glands are a few health problems that can cause a dog to sit in weird positions. If your dog sits strangely and also has trouble walking, you should schedule an appointment with your vet. The most common signs of hip dysplasia in dogs include decreased activity, pain, stiffness, lameness in hind legs, and decreased range of motion. Additionally, you will notice that your dog has trouble rising and is reluctant to run, jump, and climb the stairs or sofa. Some dogs with hip dysplasia also develop a swaying gait and have noticeably enlarged shoulder muscles compared to the rear end of the body. In some cases, you might hear grating in the hip joint while your dog is walking. Some dogs sit like humans just because every time they do it, their owners find it funny and unintentionally encourage this behavior. Dogs know how to copy human behaviors, and if your pooch thinks you like the way he is sitting, he will start sitting this way more often. However, some dogs might sit like people just because this position is more comfortable and alleviates back pain and soreness. If your dog is sitting like a human and has difficulty walking, you should take him to your vet for a check-up. Dogs that have hip dysplasia will sit on the side with the affected leg extended to the side, instead of sitting square with both legs tucked under hips. Additionally, dogs with bad hips might also have trouble sitting normally and they usually just flop to the floor like they are very tired. Observing the way a dog sits during an examination is one of the ways a vet can determine if he has hip dysplasia. Conclusion If you have noticed that your dog sits weird, he is most likely flopping down into a puppy sit with his legs splayed to the side. Also known as lazy and sloppy sit, the puppy sit is completely normal for puppies, but can be a sign of health problems in adult dogs. This weird sitting position helps dogs relieve pain and feel more comfortable if they are suffering from: Hip dysplasia Knee problems Back pain If your dog is slipping into a lazy sit only once in a while, he might be trying to relieve temporary muscle soreness or pain. However, if he sits weirdly all the time and has difficulty walking, you should take him to a vet for a check-up. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. What you can do to help Written by Tori Acres on .Share Seeing or teaching a dog to sit is common practice. However, by analysing their sitting posture, we can discover hidden problems or gain clues about their physical health. The Dog Sit We all know it; we've seen it many times and possibly worked on getting our pet to do it on our command—the dog sit. It's probably one of the first behaviours that dogs learn when they are puppies, and it often seems to be one of the easiest to master. It looks like this: a dog's bottom lowers to the ground, the hind limbs are bent and neatly tucked under the hips, the front legs stretched straight, and the head stands tall. Easy and simple. Or is it? Many owners will mention that sometimes or often their dog sits weird—one leg sticking out, the spine looks arched, or both knees bent outward in an odd manner. Although these abnormal postures may be due to something benign such as fatigue after exercise or a developing body. More often than not, though, this might be one of the signs of a much bigger problem rather than simply an unusual choice of pose. Does My Dog Sit Weirdly? To answer this question, let's first learn to distinguish between good and bad dog sitting. What's a Good Dog Sitting Position? The dog has straight forelimbs when sitting properly, with elbows pointing backward and the shoulders down. The hind limbs are neatly tucked alongside the body, with the knees and toes facing forward. The head and neck are relaxed, looking forward. An inability to adopt this posture can often happen during the puppy stage and in young dogs up to two years old whose skeletal and muscular structure is still developing. If we notice unusual sitting in adult dogs, it should attract our attention and prompt us to observe the frequency of such behaviour. Poor sit posture in the dog world has several names: lazy sit, sloppy sit, frog sit, or puppy sit. Precisely because of the latter, it is clear that puppies often demonstrate this behaviour. Puppies are very flexible since their boney structures are still developing, and their connective tissues are often more pliable than older dogs. Thus, movement patterns in younger dogs including sitting can look uncoordinated. What does a sloppy sit look like? When viewed from the front, it may seem that the dog has thrown its hind legs to the side and is sitting on one hip only; from behind, it may look as if the spine is crooked to the side. The hind legs can be bent outwards at the knees like a frog. However, due to the unnatural position of the spine, the shoulders may appear to stand high, and the forelimbs may not be aligned or pointed forward. If your puppy adopts this sitting position only occasionally, it may be due to fatigue after exercise or a slight asymmetry during their developmental phase. However, if this positional dysfunction persists or is accompanied by other signs of movement dysfunction, then they should have a thorough physical assessment. Puppies or adult dogs that frequently sit weirdly or suddenly start sitting weirdly may have an underlying medical issue that requires intervention. There are various reasons why an adult dog might not have a perfect posture while sitting. Some are minor issues, easily treated by your canine manual therapist and precisely targeted exercises. While others may be the first sign of an underlying problem that dogs often try to cover up. Therefore, sloppy sitting in adult dogs should always be carefully observed to determine if a physical problem would require veterinary assistance. Conformation Sometimes the conformation of dogs is such that textbook-propper sitting makes them uncomfortable. Different types of dogs have different builds, and some prefer unique sitting positions precisely because of their conformation. Long backs An example of conformation affecting the dog's ability to sit can often be seen in dogs with long backs, such as the popular sausage dogs or dachshunds. This hunting breed is recognisable precisely by its elongated shape. Their long spine requires strong core muscles and a good range of motion through the hip, stifle and tarsal joints for them to successfully adopt the proper sitting form. Otherwise, they can be inclined to sit on their hip, with their feet off to one side. Helping long-back dogs to maintain good posture throughout their lives is important in reducing the risk of long-term health consequences. Dwarfism Chondrodysplasia, also known as canine dwarfism, is a recessive genetic defect found in some purebred dog breeds. This condition occurs due to abnormal growth of cartilage, which affects the development of joints and the speed of their growth, resulting in irregular growth of limbs and the appearance of dwarfism. Probably the most famous dogs with this disorder are corgis, they physically are unable to point their forefeet forward. However, they will benefit, from regular conditioning to help support their bodies and maintain good posture. Athletic Excellence Certain types of dogs, such as sighthounds, are built for speedrunning and often have difficulty sitting correctly due to their long spines and strong muscular hindquarters. More specifically, these dogs have difficulty sitting in general as they often find it too uncomfortable to lower themselves into a sitting position, so most prefer the sphinx position or simply lying down. Surfaces If your dog is only showing signs of sitting weirdly in a particular place, consider that it could be down to the surface. Some dogs are picky about where they lower their bums, so a less-than-ideal surface might prompt them to avoid sitting directly on it—either because they've decided it's too wet, too hot, too cold, or perhaps too itchy. Surfaces should always have enough grip that the dog can safely move into and out of the sit position without their feet slipping. Fatigue If your adult dog occasionally slips into a sloppy sit, it's not immediately a cause for concern. Sitting in the correct position requires core strength, which can be too much effort for a dog when it's tired after a long play session or exercise. Such issues are usually not too serious and resolve on their own. Long training sessions for puppies, too, can result in this kind of behaviour. So keep in mind that they need to strengthen their muscles through conditioning exercises to withstand the challenges of sitting up straight after the training. Dysfunctions With all the above in mind, it is not an immediately alarming situation if you catch your adult dog in a strange sitting position on rare occasions. However, if your dog is over two years old and sloppy sits very often, it would be a good idea to have it examined by a vet or therapist so that potential health problems that cause it can be detected in time. Judy C. Coates, a researcher and author of Evaluation and Rehabilitation Options for Orthopedic Disorders of the Pelvic Limb, highlights that, when observing the dog in the sitting posture, a therapist considers square sit as normal. Therefore, abnormal sitting posture is often a sign of an injury or pain. Some of the potential medical conditions that could cause weird sit are listed below. Hip Dysplasia Canine hip dysplasia appears more regularly in some breeds, with larger breeds often afflicted by this condition. Although, it is also not unusual for it to occur in small dogs. Hip dysplasia is caused by the ball and the hip joint socket not fitting correctly, so they rub and grind against each other when the dog moves. This causes pain because your dog may have difficulty walking, flexing their hip to climb stairs, or sitting correctly. This condition is genetic, and the only thing you can do to reduce its occurrence is to get your dog from a reputable breeder who screens for hip dysplasia. Once diagnosed, hip dysplasia can be treated surgically, or the pain can be controlled with medication—something your vet will advise you best about. Manual therapy is an excellent adjunctive therapy for hip dysplasia, as it helps to maintain the range of motion in the joints and releases tension in soft tissue from muscle compensation. Pain A dog sitting in a position with its knees protruding outwards on each side can be a good indicator of pain. For example, a sloppy sit might be more convenient for your dog in this condition as it might help reduce tension in the already sore muscles. Pain can present through other symptoms, too, such as lameness, unwillingness, or even aggression. If you think your dog is in pain, a quick thermal imaging scan can help identify areas of concern. From there, you can make a plan to treat your dog or seek a diagnosis and medical care from your veterinarian. Injuries If you notice that your dog is limping on its hind leg, that is, if it has problems with shifting its weight on one side, there may have been an injury that prevents your dog from sitting correctly. Injuries can be either internal or external and may affect bone, muscle, ligaments, tendons, nerves, or even the superficial layers of the skin. A qualified professional must assess injuries that prevent your dog from sitting. Inflamed Anal Glands Inflammation of the anal glands is an uncomfortable condition that can cause your dog to refuse to sit correctly, and they may prefer to lean to one side. You can learn more about inflamed anal glands in the previous article. What is certain is that if there is inflammation in your dog's anal glands, the dog will avoid putting pressure on this painful area at all costs and may show it through a sloppy sit. Handler Impact Sometimes a poor sitting posture results from the owner or trainers' biomechanics. When teaching a dog to sit, placement of the treat is essential in training good posture. Everyone wants their dog to learn quickly and to be motivated and engaged during training, but this requires the right approach. Improving the guide mechanics is one of the key things to work on. It doesn't need more training time but, rather, enhanced handler mechanics. Mechanics include your handling position, movement, leash , timing, cues, and delivery of reinforcements prepare treats in advance. The handler's body language must be neutral when teaching a new behaviour, and it is necessary to reward reinforce only the behaviour we want from the dog. If we give confusing commands to the dog, be that verbal or through the position of our body, this may force the dog into a poor sitting pose. Regular reinforcement of poor posture will likely increase the frequency with which the dog adopts the dysfunctional pose. How to Correct Your Dog's Sit Now that we have talked about several possible reasons that cause dogs to sit weirdly, it's time to approach your dog individually and observe if this is a common behaviour or if it only occasionally shows a sloppy sit. For example, is your dog a puppy that doesn't yet know how to sit correctly? Do you notice any other symptoms that might indicate painful conditions? Perhaps changing the surface you usually train on will show that this was the reason for the sloppy sit all along. Also, could you consider from which side you observe the dog and in which position you are concerning the dog when you notice a weird sit? To help your dog strengthen its physical condition, in addition to regular exercises, you can provide your dog with quality supplements. Antinol is a dietary supplement that reduces inflammation and promotes joint function and health, which will facilitate holding the proper posture. Where physical dysfunction is the reason for the incorrect sitting, you should contact a professional that can help your dogs, such as a veterinarian or a canine therapist, depending on the severity and type of condition. Dogs lacking in muscular strength or condition, without other concerns, can be booked in for an online consult with a canine fitness trainer. These professionals can help you improve your dog's sitting biomechanics. Is puppy sitting a bad thing? No we are talking about the way your little pooch pie sits! Is there anything more adorable than a puppy? Sure, they may eat your shoes and stain your carpet yellow — but they are still cute. Even the way they sit captivates you and your friends. However, puppy sitting also known as sloppy sitting or the lazy sit can indicate a problem for dogs after one- two years of age. Why is this? Find out below. Normal sitting vs puppy sitting Dogs after the first two years should sit up straight with their body directly over their hips. This is considered normal sitting. If a dog is sitting with their hind legs sideways, rather than under the hips, it is considered puppy sitting or sloppy sitting. However, older dogs should be more stable and sitting this way can indicate numerous problems. What problems might be related? There are numerous potential conditions that may be related to abnormal sitting posture. They are: Hip problems — This includes potential items such as hip dysplasia, hip arthritis, or anything else that causes an inflammatory response in the joint. Knee pain — This could be the result of something as serious as a torn cruciate ligament or something more chronic in nature as a luxating patella. Back pain — Back pain may be the result of altered biomechanics, which would affect the joints involved in sitting. Problems with the anal glands and other inflammatory issues related to the hind end may also contribute. If the issue is biomechanical, such as hip, knee, or back issues than a good treatment option includes animal chiropractic. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore normal alignment to abnormal joints using very gentle, specific corrections known as adjustments. These adjustments will help restore normal motion and help your pet sit comfortably. There are other potential causes though, and it may be worth a visit to your primary care vet. Nutrition Developing puppies need a healthy diet for their joints to develop appropriately, no different than a human. There are many options including popular kibble brands such as Fromm , Zignature , Orijen , and more. If you prefer a dehydrated raw food for your pup, Sojos is a fairly popular brand. No matter what you feed, you want to avoid ingredients such as by-products in the ingredient panel. When it comes to supplements, it may be worth considering a puppy multivitamin. The glucosamine and other similar ingredients should help growing joints and may be useful in breeds predisposed to dysplasia, etc. So, is puppy sitting a bad thing? The answer to that is no — if your dog is still a puppy. However, abnormal sitting can indicate multiple other issues such as hip, knee, or back problems. There are options, however. Animal chiropractic via a certified veterinarian or chiropractor will help the biomechanical problems. A routine visit to your primary care vet can help rule out other issues. Share on Twitter If you've followed me or read my articles over the years, you've probably seen me write about a fella named Alex Rocha. Alex is my barber and my buddy, and he is the owner of The Parlour Barbershop , with locations on the east and west side - this article is about the latter. Following several successful years at his original shop on Theatre Drive , Alex decided to open a second shop, located at W. Franklin Street on Evansville's west side. There are a number of things that make The Parlour so cool - the decorations, the music, the people, and of course the haircuts, but the coolest thing of all that The Parlour has to offer is their guard dog MAC. Get our free mobile app MAC is an adorable English Bulldog - rescued and adopted by Alex and his wife - and he has been a permanent fixture at The Parlour for the past year and a half. At first glance, one might be a bit intimidated by Mac, but just spend 30 seconds with him if he's awake and you'll realize he's just about the sweetest thing ever. He doesn't necessarily make for the best guard dog in the world, but he's a perfect addition to an already laid-back shop that sees men and women, young and old come through the doors every day. This will allow your veterinarian to become more comfortable and familiar with your dog, making it easier for them to detect unusual changes. Aside from vet bills, pet insurance is an important investment that most dog owners tend to ignore. You may not be able to avoid employing the services of pet daycares, dog walkers, and others if you are going out of town or busy with work. These kinds of services are becoming increasingly popular these days. Your pet will be cared for by trained pet handlers at pet daycares. Travel Expenses: If you enjoy traveling with your Golden Retriever, you may need to pay some extra fees because many hotels do not allow pets. Dog Training: This breed has a high level of intelligence. With the right puppy training, your puppy should be able to learn a variety of tricks. Basic obedience training and socialization are important for a growing Golden puppy. Emergency Medical Treatment: Medical emergencies cannot always be avoided. Of course, these scenarios typically come at a high cost. This breed is recommended to visit a professional groomer once every 8 to 10 weeks. All these potential expenses are optional, except for emergency medical treatment. You can learn how to avoid these fees entirely as you go, which will save you even more money if you want to be practical. Make sure to talk to the breeder before adopting or buying, as not all breeders have the best intention for their puppies. They also raise funds for canine health research. Their puppies are sold with a contract for neutering or spaying as well as a registration from the American Kennel Club. This means that the quality of their dog is in their best interests. Sun-Golden Kennels — This Golden Retriever breeder operating in Wisconsin raises all of their dogs in their home, so the temperament is fairly balanced. They allow their dogs to run around inside their home and sleep beside their bed to socialize with them. They also involve them in activities such as playing ball, hiking, and swimming with other dogs. The rescue organization also houses other breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and mixed breeds like the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle aside from Golden Retrievers. Their dogs are ready for adoption and have undergone health screenings, rabies vaccinations, heartworm vaccinations, deworming, neutering, and flea and tick treatment. This shelter is open to long-distance adoption in collaboration with other regional rescue groups, as long as the adoptive family meets specific guidelines and conditions. These fees are usually used by rescues for vet bills, registration papers, and other expenses for their dogs. You can also check out our compiled list of reputable Golden Retriever breeders and rescue organizations that house purebred Golden Retrievers to help you with your search for your perfect dog. You may also want to read our ultimate dog adoption guide to ace your adoption application at any of the rescues listed above. Here are some money-saving tips for Golden Retriever owners: Make your own food and treats. Instead of buying store-bought dog food and treats for your Golden, you can learn how to make them yourself. Recommended dog food for the Golden Retriever includes chicken , healthy whole grain meals, approved veggies and fruits, and unseasoned and natural ingredients. Consider home grooming. Grooming a Golden does not have to be a difficult chore. Grooming Golden Retrievers cost a fortune when brought to a professional groomer. Your dog does not require as much grooming as many other breeds. The simple task of brushing and combing their coat will keep shedding under control and the buildup of mats and tangles at bay. Bring them to the vet regularly and keep an eye out for accidents. Because vet bills can be pricey, you must ensure that your Goldie does not suffer from any significant illnesses or injuries. Try training your own dog. Paying for dog trainers may cost you more money. If you do not want to participate in dog shows or contests, it is preferable to train your Golden yourself. This would save you a few bucks while also providing a bonding opportunity for you and your Golden. Choose quality dog supplies. It is recommended that first-time dog owners get high-quality products for their dogs. Choosing a cheaper item may end up costing you more in the long run because you may need to replace it on a regular basis. You can save money where you can, but make sure your Goldie receives the care and attention it deserves. Always remember that a healthy dog is a happy dog. A healthy Golden Retriever is not hard to maintain. With the right mindset, you could keep your pooch in tip-top shape while saving money. Keep in mind that expenses may vary based on the lifestyle you keep for your Golden. By ensuring their good health and condition as well as applying practical money-saving tips, raising a Golden Retriever is not a difficult task. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. One or both of this puppy's parents have undergone genetic testing. One or both of this puppy's parents are hip certified. One or both of this puppy's parents is OFA Heart certified. This puppy has had early neurological stimulation exercises. It is also important to understand there are different types of golden retrievers which may affect pricing. For example, if you decide to choose the lowest golden retriever cost option, those puppies almost never have the necessary 3rd-party assurances or veterinarian procedures like dewormings, vaccinations, health-tested parents, or a thorough health checkup. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Adopting vs. Please note that depending on the shelter, you may have to pay additional costs for your Golden certain shots and procedures. Depending on if the golden retriever is a boy or a girl may affect the price as well. Some male vs female golden retriever differences may make you prefer one over the other. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do. Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure — just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to the overall cost of your Golden Retriever puppy. It is wise to ask your vet for guidance on this decision. Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog.
