Being left in a crate is actually two new things: being shut in, and being left. Crate conditioning The process of crate conditioning is all about getting the puppy used to being put in the crate. And whining to be let out of the crate is really common. And the best way to avoid it, is to get your puppy up before they start whining. So that the habit never becomes established. When you are crate nap training, wake your puppy after 15 minutes or so of sleep. Play a little while, then put the puppy back in the crate for another nap. It is essential if you crate your puppy during the day or at night, that you give him chance to leave the crate often enough to keep himself clean. Teaching Puppies To Be Alone It is nice to see that some veterinarian puppy packs are including information on teaching puppies to be alone. If you go out to work, then your puppy will probably be spending some time alone from an early age. But not all puppies learn this valuable skill. But within a couple of weeks of bringing your puppy home, he should be capable of being left on his own for ten minutes without screaming the house down. One study showed that the majority of puppies left home alone for up to 60 minutes did not exhibit stress related behaviors, and those that were stressed improved with practice at being alone. Note that this was a maximum of one hour. Long periods of isolation are not appropriate for young pups. Some puppies are very vocal for much of the time and quickly learn to cry for attention throughout the day. This means not doing anything that the puppy might perceive as rewarding whilst he is crying. Including picking him up, entering the room he is in if you are not there already, feeding him, talking to him, letting him catch sight of you if he cannot see you already. But if you can stick to this rule, and make sure your family stick to it too, the amount of crying in your house will soon be very minimal indeed. Try to pre-empt potential episodes of crying by ensuring that your puppy gets regular periods of company, plenty of opportunity to use the outdoor toilet area, plenty of safe toys to chew and a safe, familiar place to sleep At the same time, it is important to reinforce any periods of silence, so that the puppy learns that being quiet is a better way to get his needs met in our illogical and modern world. By the time you have got to the puppy with a reward, he will probably have started howling again, and you will end up rewarding the noise instead of the quiet. I have a clicker on a lanyard around my neck for the first few days with a puppy in our home. When the puppy is being quiet, I press the clicker and reward the puppy with a treat or a cuddle. This is especially useful if a puppy has started yelling when you leave the room. Wait for a pause in the crying, then click for quiet, and return. You can give the puppy a treat as a reward. Building up time alone With a puppy that cries when left, over the space of a few days you can ask for longer periods of quiet before you press the click. Two or three seconds, then five, then ten, and so on. Working your way up to a minute or so. If you get this right, by the time you get up to waiting one minute, most crying will have stopped and the puppy will be silent most of the time. Crate Training Your Puppy Many people give the puppy the run of the whole house when he arrives in their home. In small puppies, night crying when left alone is essentially normal, and does not mean that your puppy has an anxiety disorder. Is my puppy in pain or sick? If your puppy is eating well, pooping normally, gaining weight, sleeping, playing and enjoying life during the day, then night crying is unlikely to be due to any kind of physical problem. Is my puppy lonely at night? This is the crux of the matter. And the answer is, yes, your puppy is probably very lonely at night. The good news is that, over time, most puppies do learn to adjust to sleeping alone. The time will come when your puppy will go to sleep at bed-time, and not wake up until morning. Comfort and company Puppies need a comforting calm place to sleep, and for the first few nights in their new home they also need company. Of these two factors: comfort and company, company is by far the most important. Some soft vet bed to line the floor of their crate or basket. And a soft toy or two to snuggle up to should do the trick. I much prefer to bring the puppy into my room. I put a travel crate on a chair right next to my bed so the puppy is inches from me. That means working backwards a bit to get a good bedtime routine going. Make sure the last hour or two of the evening is a calm and sleepy one. Have the lights dim and the TV on low for the last couple of hours before bed, so your puppy sleeps during the late evening and is ready for a pee at bedtime. Usually you just need to show your face and the puppy will stop crying. The problem with soothing the puppy at night is that it tends to reinforce the crying and prolong the problem. Your puppy is lonely and scared and you being angry and I really do get how you feel at 3am in your pajamas is only going to make things worse. Ok, so we have mostly talked about night crying in new puppies, but what about older puppies that are still crying at night What about a 12 week old puppy crying at night? If you are still on speaking terms with your neighbors at this point, the cold turkey method can work. However, there is a risk. Because some puppies just get increasingly distressed at night and those first days turn into weeks. If the puppy has previously been sleeping well and starts crying at around the 3 months old point, then something may be disturbing them at night. After a short period of being night buddies, you may need to move the puppy out of your room in stages to break the association between night times and being sad! Finally, sleeping alone! Once your puppy is sleeping alone, stick to your routine, at least for the first few months. Good habits take time to establish. Some puppies find a ticking clock or the radio turned down low is a comfort. And unless your puppy is very small or hairless, they will probably prefer to be cool rather than too warm. When to get help from a professional Sleep is so important. I am firmly of the view that it is almost impossible to be the dog or child parent you want to be when you are constantly sleep deprived. So, if this situation is still dragging on as the weeks turn into months, you really should get some help. First from your Veterinarian. And if necessary, from a qualified pet behaviorist. Your vet should be able to refer you. Key factors in night-time crying The top reason that new puppies cry at night is because they are lonely, feeling homesick, and missing their brothers and sisters. The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail. Not all households can handle raising a puppy it can be a LOT of work!!
