They have to strike a fine balance between getting enough nutrients to grow and avoiding an over-abundance that can lead to abnormal growth and disabling conditions. In this article you will learn precisely how to feed your puppy. What they can eat, what they should not, how many times you should feed them each day, basic information on home-made diets and the pros and cons of various commercial dog foods. The majority of Labrador owners feed their puppy kibble. Kibble is ground meal, shaped into dried biscuit-like pellets that are extremely convenient to buy, store and feed, providing everything a puppy needs in one easy to handle product. All the major brands carry a range of kibble and many are specifically formulated to suit the precise needs of puppies. For our recommendations of the best puppy food for labs, please read our article on: The Best Food for Labrador Puppies. Good breeders will supply you with all the information you need to feed your new puppy and you should follow this advice. Puppies almost always get upset tummies during a change of diet. The stress of moving to a new home is enough to deal with without them potentially having tummy upset on top. So try to avoid this. But expect your puppy to get diarrhea after such a sudden change. What Can Puppies Eat? With a bewildering choice of different puppy foods available, what to feed your puppy may not be the easiest decision to make. You Can Feed Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is ground up food, formed into pellets and dried for easy storage and convenience. It is a specially formulated, complete and balanced diet, containing everything a puppy needs to grow and be healthy. Many people believe kibble is the best way to feed a puppy, with it being so easy to buy, store and feed while containing every nutrient a puppy needs in the right proportions. Wet, Complete Puppy Foods Are An Option As the name suggests, complete wet dog food is complete and balanced, meaning nothing should be fed in combination. Everything needed is included in this one food. Complete wet foods come in individual pouches or tins with one pouch or tin containing one single serving. In the main these foods are low in nutrition, contain a high amount of cheap fillers, by-products and water and need mixing with a biscuit to give them some substance and to make them more complete. Because the food is such low quality, you have to feed a lot of it. And what goes in, must come out. This type of feeding was popular decades ago and I do remember my parents feeding our first dogs this way, but most people have moved on from this and are feeding their dogs in better ways now. Raw Food, BARF And Home-Made Diets Raw feeding is a diet that consists of mostly raw meat, edible bones and animal organs, though most practitioners also mix in small portions of fruit, veg and selected other foodstuffs. There are many people feel strongly that this is the best possible way to feed a dog. But I would caution most people that to feed this diet successfully, you need to do A LOT of research, gain a lot of knowledge and truly understand a dogs nutritional needs to make sure they get exactly what they need in the right amounts. Many people wonder if they can feed their puppy human foods, anything found in the fridge or larder. Furthermore, there are many human foods that are toxic to dogs that you should avoid at all costs. Too much of some nutrients can be bad in itself, but also prevent the absorption and use of other nutrients too. So supplementing a balanced diet is a bad thing to do. Can You Give Puppies Milk? Assuming you get your puppy at the recommended 8 weeks, they will have been fully weaned before you bring them home. Many puppies are intolerant of cows milk and drinking it leads to an upset tummy and diarrhea so you would do best to avoid giving your puppy any milk at all. One exception is for very young puppies under 6 weeks of age. When we have newborn puppies at our house we sometimes need to supplement and use Esbilac Milk Supplemen t. However, if you have a very young puppy that you think may need supplementing please first consult with your veterinarian. Are They Necessary? You will likely be feeding your puppy a commercially available complete and balanced dog food, in which case you certainly should not supplement their food. Supplementing this will mean too much of one or more things, making it unbalanced which can actually lead to harm. But an excess amount of calcium in the diet of a Lab puppy can lead to skeletal development problems. So adding a calcium supplement to an already complete diet can actually do more harm than good. There may also be times your vet advises you to do so. But if feeding raw, you should know more about nutrition than I do. This is a hard question to answer and sadly I cannot give you a definite quantity or weight to feed them each day. Puppies grow at different rates, some are more active than others and there can be large differences between metabolisms too. However… The biggest determining factor is how concentrated the nutrients and calories are in the brand of food you feed them. High quality foods are nutrient rich and give a puppy all they need from quite small amounts of food. But cheaper brands are full of low quality and nutritionally empty fillers that mean a puppy needs considerably more to get what they need. Start by feeding your puppy according to the guidelines on the label of the puppy food you buy for them. Then see how their body develops. Puppies should not be fat! But at the other end of the scale if they start to look and feel a little slim, up their portion sizes a little. The guidelines on the food you buy are just that…guidelines. Some dogs may be allergic to wheat, macadamia nuts, etc. It can manifest as a runny nose, high volumes of shedding, rashes on the skin, and so on. Different dietary needs are crucial, especially if they display allergy symptoms. Avoid all types of human foods. You can give your lab puppy supplements You can get great quality adult dog food and puppy kibble from companies like Royal Canin Labrador Retriever, Blue Buffalo, Canidae Grain-Free, etc. Only adult food must be given to labrador retrievers who have crossed 1. Your puppy needs 4 small meals consisting of half a cup of food per meal till he is 2 months old. From 2 to 6 months, he needs 3 meals daily consisting of 1 cup of food per meal. From 6 months onwards , you can give your puppy 2 meals daily of 2 cups of dog food per meal. Is This A Problem? Yes, this is a major problem! Fat dogs are adorable but also extremely unhealthy. An adult labrador retriever should weigh at most pounds. Labs that are fatter than this stand at the risk of obesity, arthritis , and other lifelong diseases. Refrain from feeding your labrador too many dog treats. Onions and garlic: surprisingly, anything in the onion and garlic family is incredibly toxic to dogs. Meat with bones: if not chewed properly, sharp edges can rupture the throat, stomach lining, intestines, and other parts of the digestive tract. Other human foods and beverages to avoid giving your dog are alcohol, sugar, citric fruits, and anything with caffeine. Your labrador retriever should weigh between 55 to 70 pounds at full adulthood. Male labs are heavier than female labs, so they can fall on either side of the optimal weight spectrum. Some healthy treats for your labrador retriever are cut fruits and vegetables. Carrots, celery, cucumber, beetroot, apples, bananas, and berries strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, etc. Dogs also love peanut butter! Veggies dipped in peanut butter also make a great snack for your dog. This is entirely up to you as dog owners. If you have the time and patience to cook meals for your dog, go for it. Store-bought food is easier and is filled with the right nutritional requirements for your lab puppy. On the other hand, with the right recipe, home-cooked food works, too. What Should I Do? A dog growling at you when you go near his food bowl is most commonly a trauma response or a way to protect his food. We often see this with rescues. House training your lab puppy is equally important to avoid food aggression. Labrador Retrievers get piddly after their meals. Dog owners must take out their lab puppy as frequently as they eat sometimes even more often to let their energy out and adult labradors less frequently. A lab puppy needs a ton of exercise. The amount of kibble you should feed your Labrador puppy will vary depending on their age, weight, and activity level. A good rule of thumb is to start with cups of kibble daily and adjust as needed. Best Dog Food For Lab Puppies: The best dog foods for lab puppies include those that are high in protein and low in fillers. The food you should feed a black lab puppy is the same as for any other Labrador puppy. A chocolate lab puppy should be fed the same food as for any other Labrador puppy. A 2-year-old chocolate lab should eat about cups of kibble daily. You should stop feeding puppy food to your Labrador at around months of age. At this point, their growth plates will have closed, and they will no longer need the extra nutrients found in puppy food. Labradors live for years. They start to slow down around 7 and may develop some health problems in their senior years. You should also increase their exercise level. Lab breeders feed their dogs high-quality dog food specifically formulated for large-breed puppies. A lab puppy should drink about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. This amount may increase as they get older and more active. A labrador needs at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can be a combination of walking, running, and playing. Golden labs live for years. Chocolate labs live for years same like labs of any color. Labradors lose their baby teeth between 3 and 6 months of age. You can start to transition your puppy to eating twice a day at around 6 months of age. By the time they are 1 year old, they should eat only once daily. You should stop feeding your large breed puppy food at around 18 months of age. Why Are Labs So Hungry? Labradors are a very active breed of dog, and they need a lot of calories to fuel their energy levels. They are also prone to gaining weight, so keep a close eye on their food intake About The Author Shradha Kabra Shradha is a seasoned writer at Labradorandyou. As she grew older, I became concerned that I was feeding her too much. So, how often should you feed a Labrador? You should feed an adult Labrador two meals per day. You should feed Labrador puppies three meals per day, unless otherwise stated on the food packaging. It is essential to adhere to food schedules that are consistent for the long-term health of your Lab. You should also be aware of how to handle situations when your dog doesn't want to eat on schedule or doesn't finish its meal. In this article Labrador Feeding Schedules Labrador adults, like most dogs, work well when fed on a schedule. Twice per day is the standard as it allows the dog to eat and digest properly. Puppies will require more frequent feedings, though, as they expend far more energy and smaller stomachs to hold their needed food. If you have a Labrador that gets a lot of exercise, you may want to consider feeding them less food more often, as they will likely feel hungry sooner. Age, size, and the food's nutritional content should determine the amount of food given. Whatever the frequency, it's crucial for your puppy or dog to have a regular feeding schedule. Disrupting this can cause digestive problems that are unpleasant for the dog and the owner. According to Veterinary Centers of America, dogs are creatures of habit that need the security and predictability of their feeding routine. In addition, keeping the feeding schedule consistent helps your pet cope with other changes that may occur within the household. Lastly, never free-feed a Labrador. While Labradors may not technically eat themselves to death , they can certainly make themselves sick if you let them decide how much and how often to eat. This is especially true while you're trying to establish a set routine for when your Lab will eat its meals. Feed Your Lab Less Food More Frequently If you find that your Labrador isn't interested in eating the entire meal in a single sitting, you can add more mealtime if it works for your schedule. To do this, you should take the whole day's meal portion and divide it evenly into the desired number of meals. If you add an extra mealtime, you should serve 1 cup at each of the three meals. In other words, adding another mealtime doesn't mean that you add more food intake to the day's total. Use Interactive Food Dispensers Another option is to use an interactive toy to dispense the food, which may help to keep your dog's attention for the entire mealtime. It is an excellent option to hide food or treats. This particular item is perfect for a Labrador because it will allow your pet to use its intelligence to solve a puzzle and problem-solve while being rewarded with the kibble hidden inside. Although it isn't a good option for every Lab's mealtime, it is an idea for a pup that loses interest in their food before finishing. How Much to Feed a Labrador Your Lab's portions at each meal should depend on a few different factors. First of all, you need to know if your pup is currently at a healthy weight. So the best thing to do in this case is to ask your veterinarian if your Lab is at a healthy weight. If your Lab is not at an ideal weight , you'll need to talk to your vet and amend the feeding plan. You may also consider a specialized food designed to help your dog reach the appropriate weight. Your Labrador's activity level will also impact how much he needs to eat each day. It's always a good idea to consult the feeding guide on your dog food and your veterinarian's advice to make an informed decision. Labrador Feeding Schedule Examples To give you an idea of a standard feeding schedule and meal plan, here is a chart based on the feeding recommendation from Royal Canin's Labrador Retriever dry puppy food : Adult Target Weight:. The source of protein matters when considering a high-quality diet. FATS The rest of the diet should be made up of fats, carbs, and vitamins. Labs need to have a correct protein -to-fat ratio, where protein takes the lead. Dogs tend to convert fat into glucose, so this is an important source of energy. Dogs rely mostly on protein and fats, but carbs are necessary. That said, a low carb diet is best for puppies. However, you still need the right percentage of carbs, since this gives your dog the sensation of being full. These include starches, fibers, and sugars. Try to opt for more complex carbs like starchy grain and veggies because these are easier to digest. Your Lab puppy will thrive when his or her diet includes: Vitamin B12 especially during puppy development , Vitamins A and E, C, Vitamin D, phosphorus, and calcium, Potassium Each of these required vitamins and minerals contributes to a healthy, happy, and energetic puppy. They also help offset issues like obesity. Vitamins A and E are important because they help your dog burn calories and promote eye and skin health. Vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus, on the other hand, are part of a trifecta that works to strengthen teeth and bones. Potassium is a heart health-preserver. Labs with poor genetics are especially prone to orthopedic issues. Osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia are common health problems for this breed. Glucosamine, an amino-sugar, together with chondroitin sulfate, helps replace and support naturally degrading cartilage during old age. Recently,"grain-free" foods are being championed as a preferred and even high-quality form of dog food. That's, not the whole story. An investigation launched by the FDA revealed that there are potential links between a form of canine heart disease and grain-free foods. So far, researchers have provided an update to this researchers have provided an update to this research staring that the issue may not just be grain-free diets. Grain-free may be part of other trends knows as "BEG"- boutique companies. Puppy diets don't' need to be complicated. They also don't need to include ingredients that humans might enjoy. Enjoyment doesn't necessarily bring any nutritional value to your puppy's development. Keep it simple, using the guidelines for fats, proteins, and carbs above and don't shy away from food with grains in them. It's not their presence that's a problem it's often the ratio. There shouldn't be more carbs or grains than protein. Nor does including only legumes, seeds, lentils, or chickpeas as the primary ingredients make the food more superior. It's perfectly healthy to include complex carb sources like starchy rice and other grains. Grain-free isn't and shouldn't be a qualifying factor for your choice in puppy food. Feeding Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is dried, pelleted food that stores well is easy to eat, and is pre-formulated with everything your puppy needs to thrive and grow in his early developmental months. There are plenty of popular brands that don't measure up to the Snowy Pines standard. That's why it's so vital for you to learn how to read puppy food labels. Puppies should stick with "puppy stage" food, while adults should stick to bags marked "adults. Instead, your dog should have regular bowel movements, allowing them to absorb all the nutrients available. You should also keep in mind that caloric intake is calculated a little differently for puppies. Kibble diets are measured by how many calories the proteins, fats, and carbs represent for each gram. For puppies, this should be 3. Sticking to these ratios will help ensure your kibble choice is a healthy one. It's also important to note that kibble calories are often higher when compared to wet food. If it's high-quality wet food, it won't have as much fat to preserve it, which means fewer calories. You may have to supplement with dry food, especially if you're trying to keep the calories of carbs, proteins, and fats in the right per-gram ratio. How often and what time to feed I will show you the best puppy foods, whether dry, wet, or raw, and look at food safety, together with schedules, quantities and even a handy puppy diet chart. Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies. The best food for Labrador puppies to consume in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to trained breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a Labrador puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. You can do this by mixing some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, you can reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed a Labrador puppy as they get older. In their four months living with you, and once they are weaned off milk, Labradors are likely to reach almost half their adult weight. They will reach their full adult weight by the time they are 6 to 7 months old. With this rapid growth can come some risks. Labradors can be susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia and joint abnormalities that can start in puppyhood. Once your Lab puppy hits 6 months, their growth begins to slow down. Once puppyhood is over, you can move to feeding your lab twice a day instead of 3 or 4 times. Labs are still very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen at around 15 months. This is because, being a breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your Labrador puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. It is also dangerous for a puppy to overeat. Labradors are large breeds, which means they need plenty of nutrients and calories as they grow to ensure they go from being active puppies to healthy adult dogs. Labrador puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, Labrador puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. The amount of food you give your Labrador is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult Labradors, around 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female Labradors, who tend to be around 5 to 10 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, to 1, calories per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your Labrador based on how calorically dense their food is. Adult Labradors should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs may benefit from exercise after eating: especially high energy Labs with a lot of energy to burn off. You should also try to give your Labrador a high quality food that is specially designed for large breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. For example, Labradors can be particularly susceptible to obesity. As a breed, they tend to be one of the most commonly obese dogs in Australia. This is due to several factors, including a genetic predisposition to unhealthy weight gain and a famously large appetite. However, plenty of Labs suffering from obesity are simply overfed and not getting enough exercise. Choosing a low carb diet is crucial to preventing obesity in your Labrador. If you are unsure about what you should feed your Labrador, you should always consult your vet. They will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any chronic health issues, and they will be able to create a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for many years to come. Wet food for Labradors is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. Chewing on dry food can be especially good for teething Labrador puppies. A raw diet can be a good option for your Labrador as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your Labrador, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. Different dog breeds will need different kinds of nutrient support as they go through the various stages of their life. It can also be easy to overestimate the amount of food your Labrador needs to stay fit and healthy — especially if they are skilled at begging! You need to make sure that your dog is eating the right amount of food for their breed, their size, and activity level. You should also avoid foods that, while delicious for humans, can be harmful or toxic for dogs. Foods like onions, nuts, alcohol, cooked bones, and artificial sweeteners are commonly included in dinners meant for humans, but can cause serious health issues for your Labrador. No matter how old your Lab is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress.

Acana Top 10 Dog Food Brands in the Philippines In the past, people fed their dogs leftovers and table scraps; however, as international dog food brands found their way into this nation, households with above-average income started opting for these products. Pedigree This is among one of the most recognized dog food brands in the world, and Pedigree was also the first brand to sell its products in the Filipino market. Owners claim that even after a decade of feeding their dogs this product, their dogs have not encountered any urination or kidney problems, which most sources state, they encounter. While it is not the best dog food available in the market, it sure is readily available, and most convenient. Moreover, the brand states that their recipes are created with keeping wolves in mind, as dogs derived from them. This dog food is suited more towards active breeds, and it can be a little too much for less active pooches, but it is grain-free, which is always a sign of a great product. Royal Canin This brand is fairly new, it was established in in France by a veterinarian, and it is quite famous among dog owners with a picky eater. Some dogs just hate kibbles, and for them, this wet dog food is an ideal choice. Solutions Go! Solutions is an American brand, which not only offers premium-quality dog food but also serves as a noble cause by providing food to animal shelters. Moreover, they offer special dog food for pooches with sensitive stomachs, and they are more than happy to provide to state their limited 15 ingredients, and none of them are grain-based. Holistic Select This brand specializes in kibbles, while they do offer wet dog food, dogs seem to be in love with their dry food. Furthermore, if you happen to have a dog that is very specific in its eating habits, then this brand is for you because they have about 16 different flavors with varied meats. Although their products are grain-free, they are packed with other fillers, which may be a concern for some pooches. Eukanuba Easily the most trusted dog food brand of Filipino dog owners, Eukanuba has gained huge popularity in the last decade. Plus, they have a specific product for each type of dog, small dogs, large puppies, senior dogs, you name it, they have a product for them. While it is a favorite of many dog lovers, it consists of grains and many fillers. Summit This is the only Canadian brand on the list, and its parent company is Petcurean. Being a brand of such a large manufacturer, it is unsurprisingly affordable. Aozi A fairly new addition to the Filipino market, and it is a unique product, as it was formulated in Europe, and is manufactured in China. Additionally, it is the only product on this list that contains spinach. Special Dog Excellence The only Italian dog food brand on the list, but similar to Summit, it is a part of a huge corporation, Monge. Plus, none of their product contains any artificial flavoring or preservatives. Additionally, this brand is often recommended to dogs with high cholesterol. It also has a long shelf life and does not require refrigeration. Canned Most dogs enjoy canned or wet food; it has a long shelf life and is easy to find in any supermarket, but it can be costly. For some owners, the cost is well worth it, but not every brand of commercial canned food contains the protein that your dog requires. The higher the water content, the lower the nutrient content, so your dog will need to consume more food to get the nutritional value his body requires. Home Cooked A home-cooked diet allows the owner to know exactly what is in everything her dog eats and ensures that his nutritional needs are met. Feeding your dog, a home-cooked diet takes time and money, but many owners believe the extra effort is worth the peace of mind. Semi-Moist Semi-moist foods are commercial dog foods shaped like pork chops, burgers, or other meaty foods. These foods are the least nutritious of all dog foods and contain a lot of artificial flavors and colors. Raw Raw meat, preferably with some bones never cooked bones, only raw and organs mixed in, is a natural source of phosphorus and calcium. Many dogs respond well to this diet because they have short intestinal tracts and strong stomach acids, both of which make it easy for them to consume and digest raw food. Here are the Top 14 Dog Food in the Philippines that you can trust! Purina Purina Dog Food has been a well-known and well-liked dog food brand on the market for over 80 years. Purina is without a doubt one of the most popular and trusted dog food brands on the market today. It can be difficult to sift through their product lists to find the perfect meal for your four-legged companion due to their ever-expanding dietary selections. Owners claim that even after a decade of feeding this product to their dogs, they have not experienced any urination or kidney problems, which most sources claim they do. While it is not the best dog food on the market, it is easily accessible and convenient. Furthermore, the brand claims that their recipes are inspired by wolves, as dogs are descended from them. This dog food is more suited to active breeds, and it may be a little too much for less active dogs, but it is grain-free, which is always a sign of a good product. Eukanuba Eukanuba has easily become the most trusted dog food brand among Filipino dog owners in the last decade. Furthermore, they have a product for every type of dog: small dogs, large puppies, senior dogs, you name it, they have a product for it. While it is popular among dog owners, it contains grains and a lot of fillers. Sensitivities This nutritious GO! Peas and lentils are likewise not suitable for dogs with renal disorders. Which ingredients should I avoid in dog food? Nutrition is a complicated subject. Just like in human nutrition, different ingredients in dog and cat food can help or harm your pet. These are seven ingredients to avoid in pet food. Best dog food brands in the Philippines Different types of dog food The first step to choosing the right dog food is understanding its many types. There are five types of dog food that you need to know about: dry, canned, semi-moist, home-cooked, and raw. Dry food Otherwise known as kibbles, this is the typical dog food you see in many pet and grocery stores. Dry food is the conventional choice for many dog owners because of its affordable price, easy preparation, and long shelf life. Always read the labels when shopping for dry dog food. Also look for essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, E, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. It has a long shelf life but is a little bit more expensive than dry food. This will give you an idea of how much fat and protein it contains. These are snacks made to look like bacon, pork chops, or hot dogs. Semi-moist food contains more sugar, salt, artificial flavors and colors than dry or canned meals, so use it sparingly. Home-cooked Aside from store-bought food, pet owners can prepare meals from scratch for their fur babies. Home-made diets haven't been proven to be 'better' than ready-made dog food, but whole and unprocessed ingredients are well-known to have long-term benefits. When preparing home-cooked dog food, you should include proteins such as beef, turkey, lamb, chicken, pork, tuna, and the occasional egg. Avoid fatty cuts or anything covered in garlic or various seasonings. Take great care to remove chicken bones since they tend to splinter. You can also include vegetables such as peas, carrots, spinach, cucumbers, pumpkin, sweet potato, and corn. Carbohydrates like rice, pasta, oatmeal, and even quinoa are also important. Avoid including alcohol, avocados, chocolate, coffee, garlic, grapes, raisins, mint, and artificial flavors in their meals. While most of us would prefer to prepare home-cooked food for our pets, it can be expensive and time-consuming. Raw Dogs are carnivores, so a raw diet is an obvious choice for many dog owners. A raw diet can comprise of organ and muscle meat, whole or ground bone, raw eggs, dog-safe fruits and veggies, and even dairy products. It can be home-made, freeze-dried, or dehydrated. However, before you transition to a raw diet, be sure to consult your veterinarian. Although these mostly cover the basics, they might not have all the nutritional needs of a growing puppy or a nursing mother. Many veterinarians recommend feeding your dog according to their life stage to maintain optimal health and wellness. Puppy 0 to 9 months From birth to nine months old, puppies need the right amount of nutrition to support their growth and development. At six to eight weeks, they need to be fed as often as four to six meals a day. Puppy dog food should include high amounts of calcium and protein to support bone and muscle growth, especially for large breeds. After weaning, they lose their ability to digest lactose. Although small amounts can be tolerated, milk may cause an upset stomach and diarrhea. Overweight dogs need less fat and protein and vice versa for underweight dogs. Ingredients like prebiotics and probiotics help maintain a healthy gut by promoting microbial populations. Increased omega-3 fatty acids can combat inflammation and help promote a stronger vascular system. Glucosamine can also help promote joint health and combat arthritis. What might work for other dogs may not work for yours. As descendants of wolves, early hunting dogs are capable of ingesting large portions of food before going for days without eating. However, dividing meals once or twice per day is recommended for household pets these days. Regardless of their feeding schedule, never allow your dog to exercise after a big meal, especially when they consume it rapidly. This can help avoid intestinal obstruction, bloating, and other digestive problems. Should I avoid grain in dog food? Unless your dog suffers from intolerances to grains or carbohydrate malabsorption, a small amount of gluten-free grain can serve as part of a healthy diet. If not, it's best to feed your dog grain-free dog food packed with nutrition to help them stay healthy and active. What if my dog has allergies? Believe it or not, dogs can be allergic to certain foods. Meat, dairy products, and eggs are some of the most common allergens for dogs. If you see symptoms such as redness in the skin or paws and loss of coat, try switching to a different protein source until you have narrowed down the source of the allergy. How to Choose Puppy Food — Buying Guide Here are some key points to consider: Wet or dry food: pick the type that's best for your puppy. Look for high-quality and nourishing ingredients to support development. Consult your vet to check if your puppy has special needs. For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below. Here are some of the differences between dry and wet food to help you choose the right one. They can also be easily ingested because they commonly come with softened meat chunks. Wet foods are also more flavorful and aromatic for dogs, which is why most of them prefer them, especially picky eaters. Moreover, if your fur baby is sick and has less appetite, wet food can entice your pup to eat because of its flavorful smell and taste. Dry Foods Are Convenient and Have Dental Benefits Compared to wet food, dry food or kibbles do not spoil easily and can be pre-portioned. They are also cheaper than the other type, making it a more cost-efficient diet for your puppy. Moreover, dry food encourages your pup to chew on their food, which helps remove tartar buildup and encourages the development of stronger teeth. You can always pick breed-specific puppy foods, but below are some tips for easier selection. For Smaller Breeds, Choose Small-Sized Kibbles and Chunks If you have a chihuahua, a toy-sized shih tzu, or a poodle, opt for small-sized kibble and chunks, whether it is dry or wet. This is so that your puppy can easily chew and ingest the food. Moreover, small breeds require a higher amount of protein and calories compared to larger breeds because they are more active and have higher energy levels. As their bones grow faster, it is recommended to choose puppy food with the appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of to 1. This prevents joint and muscle diseases like developmental orthopedic disease DOD. Moreover, large breed puppy foods typically come in larger sizes, so be careful not to overfeed them to avoid getting them overweight. This is also why their food has fewer calories than small-breed puppy foods. Franz Philip Joseph R. Ubaldo Regular weighing of large breed puppies is important. In the first months, large breed puppies grow way more than the smaller breed ones making the adjustment of their food portions more crucial in ensuring they get the proper amount of food to sustain their rapid growth. Puppies also have a lot of energy, so it is important that their food contains a good amount of calories and carbohydrates. Steer Clear of Puppy Food Made With Meat By-Products Part of ensuring that your puppy is eating safe and nourishing foods is avoiding those that are made of meat by-products. With this in mind, always remember to check the label and choose puppy foods with real meat. They may be allergic to a certain type of meat or ingredient found in most puppy foods, so you have to be picky when selecting one. Ubaldo Aside from food allergies, food intolerance is another concern in puppies that pet owners need to be aware of. This is different from allergies because it does not involve the immune system and can just cause transient gastrointestinal problems like one-off vomiting, stomach pain, or stool changes upon ingestion of the trigger food component. It becomes a lot more complicated when given or fed on a regular basis because those symptoms may mimic the effect of allergic reactions and could have longer effects. By Yuliya Matvyeyeva How has a breed that is rather young become the most popular breed in the world? The answer lies in its versatility, intelligence, and devotion. The German Shepherd Dog possesses wonderful working abilities that are directly related to the special traits of this breed, such as solid nerves, easygoing behavior, eagerness to please, strong guardian instinct, and loyalty. This provides a foundation for use of the German Shepherd Dog as a watchdog, protection dog, and as a companion. Due to the high popularity of the breed, several distinct German Shepherd dog types have emerged. If you are looking for a German Shepherd puppy , you need to be aware that just because someone bred two German Shepherds, it does not necessarily mean that the offspring will have all of the wonderful characteristics that the breed is famous for. This article is intended to give you an overview of several of the most common types of GSD. Germans take great pride in their breed. It is a national treasure. Naturally, they make sure that the dogs they breed are the best. In Germany, there are very strict rules when it comes to breeding German Shepherds. First of all, ALL breeding stock is required to pass hip certification. Sound temperament is critical too. This is to say that, prior to breeding, each dog must have at least a Schutzhund I title or its equivalent , which is quite a challenge to achieve. Also, every dog must pass an endurance test AD , which consists of running approximately 12 miles. All of this ensures that only the best and healthiest population is used for breeding. If you are looking for a dog that will search for drugs or contraband, or will be part of a search and rescue team, you should look for a German Shepherd that comes from working lines. These dogs make great family companions too, but some of them require an experienced handler and trainer. Successful working dogs have a stable temperament with a great disposition and know how to relax. They can also perform miracles in obedience. Falk von den Wolfen 9th place BSP If you want a strikingly beautiful dog, a head turner - these lines might be for you. A good show line German Shepherd Dog is beauty itself, but its beauty is functional and not abstract. Show line German Shepherds tend to be larger than Working line dogs and brighter in color. Also, they usually have a softer and more agreeable temperament. They too, however, must have a Schutzhund title in order to be bred, and pass a courage test at each National show where they compete - in accordance with SV rules. They make exceptional family companions and protectors. German show line German Shepherds are in no way couch potatoes; they need exercise, training, and lots of social interaction. The difference might be in structure - sometimes favorable, sometimes not. German Working Bloodline breeders try to follow the German Shepherd breed standard , and often succeed, whereas most other European Working Bloodline breeders still have some work to do. Often it is a matter of personal preference. As far as working ability, there are outstanding working German Shepherd Dogs among the other European lines, and they have a very dedicated following. Some examples of such lines are: Czech or Slovak working lines, Belgium working lines, etc. Conan Plamen Czech Working Bloodlines American Bloodlines are practically a different breed of dog, as breeders who promote this type do not follow the international German Shepherd breed standard. The German Shepherds of this type usually have thinner bones, narrower heads, exaggerated angulation, and softer ears and pasterns. In addition, there are several health concerns that seem to be more common among these dogs, such as bloat, allergies, and excessive shedding. There is another serious issue to consider when looking at this type of dog - there is no hip certification required by the main breed registries in the United States. There are no temperament tests required either. If you do decide to get an American line German Shepherd, be certain that not only its parents, but all ancestors for at least four generations have healthy OFA certified hips and that you can at least verify the temperament of the parents. American Type GSD. There are obvious differences in body structure and aesthetics. But the largest difference is the temperament. The article is an attempt to give insight for those who are seriously interested in the German Shepherd. It is written by a year student of the breed who has bred and trained GSDs for nearly that long as well. As with most any breed, breeding is everything. Yes, there are good breeders and good dogs within each bloodline. American Line Shepherds from American breeding are typically taller and longer than those from Germany. Although there is a breed standard from the parent club, there is little-to-no oversight as what dogs can be bred. As long as they are fully registered, they can breed. Health problems plaque these bloodlines as well, more so than quality European lines. The American shepherd is not required to pass a temperament test, any kind of endurance testing, and is not required to be free of dysplasia. The biggest difference in the American line is the temperament. Most American GSDs have no job, mainly due to their lack of working ability. They are not required to use the brain and the emphasis is more on a pretty trot in the show ring. Because of this softness, they cannot work and but are generally easier to control. American shepherds still have the desire of protectiveness but without the clear head that keeps them from being fear-biters , nervous, or aggressive. Most of them do not have the courage to do true protection work or police work and are easily defensive and almost always skiddish. The differences among the American bloodline is considered by many around the world to be a separate, inferior breed. As a general rule, American Shepherds are a far cry from the real deal. Unfortunately, many people in the USA only know of this kind of dumbed-down version of the true Shepherd dog and consider it as normal. We assure you, it is not. They are usually darker in color than American dogs and their back is roached i. Their temperament is not as strong as von Stephanitz the father of the breed originally idealized. They are easier to control than true working line dogs. The SV German registry requires breeding dogs to have clearances for hips and elbows and a working title along with their show title. As a result, this line is generally healthier than American lines, but usually not as solid as the bloodlines we have yet to talk about. West German lines have little-to-no real emphasis on working. To allow a true shepherd to compete in these trials would reveal the deficiencies within this line. Some within this line do make good workers but it is much harder to find true, consistent working dogs in this line. They have the brains and nerves to do a real job. This line, as a general rule, has less health issues than the others. Breeders within this line aim for working ability, not show-ring quality. They have nice body structure suitable to perform a working function. Generally, they possess balanced drives and good nerve. They also make awesome family pets, without aggression, shyness, or fear. They tend to be energetic and therefore do best in an active home. Their colors are usually bi-color or sable. They tend to mature faster which gives them a longer working life. They usually have a high pain tolerance. These dogs have a love for work, have high energy, are loyal and confident. They are more environmentally sound, i. However, it is also true that this line produces dogs that are smarter than many dog owners and therefore can be, at times, harder to control. When people envision a loyal, confident, awesome GSD, this is the bloodline they dream of, whether they know it or not — color probably being the only exception. DDR dogs were strictly regulated by the government of East Germany. This kind of stringent control of breeding specimen produced a very unique look in the breed. DDR dogs typically have larger heads, large bones, and dark pigment, and many are bi-color. DDR dogs were bred for border patrol work. These dogs have filled capacities in police, military, and security work around the world. They are usually stable dogs with low to medium prey drive. However, their defense drive is typically higher and they are generally wary of strangers. Some can be harder for most people to control. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in , breeding standards in this area of the world were softened and breeders were given more freedom. Many breeders within this line tend be to moving away from working ability with a greater emphasis on beauty. Poor breeding within this line has caused low drive and poor nerves, although many still make good family dogs. Some of the dogs within these bloodlines have solid working drives that are intense and agile. They are usually more slender and more streamlined than DDR dogs. They range in color from bi-color to sable. Czech dogs became more common in America in the late s. At that time, many of these dogs had bad hips and poor temperaments. They were definitely harder to control. However, within the last 20 years their drives have improved, they are more social, and have a greater trainability than previous years. Their hips have improved as well. A good, contemporary Czech shepherd possesses a nice balance in prey and defense. Be informed about what line of German Shepherd will best meet your needs. If you want a laid-back dog, do not get a working-line Shepherd. Probably an American line or West German line would be best for you. If you are concerned about overall health, stay away from show lines. Admittedly, there will be those who disagree with this article. Our attempt is not to be offensive but rather to help sort through the malaise of misinformation and ignorance concerning the German Shepherd Dog. Also, we have very solid dogs available. We pride ourselves on breeding stable temperaments, neither shy nor aggressive. We have dogs for family pets and others to fulfill working capacities — law enforcement, sport, security, SAR, HRD, and more. Check our For Sale page to see availability. Note: Leerburg formerly bred working bloodline German Shepherds until deciding to shift its focus towards producing dog training videos and courses alongside providing quality dog training equipment. This article was written when our breeding program was still active. While Leerburg no longer breeds working GSDs, we believe this article may still provide valuable information for those interested in starting their own breeding program. We have built our reputation by breeding quality working dogs and backing them up with a fair guarantee. One of the ways we have maintained the working ability in our bloodline is through German working bloodlines. The Germans have maintained working ability in their bloodline through the sport of Schutzhund. In Germany, you cannot register a litter of pups unless it has a Schutzhund working title. This means that if a dog does not have a good enough temperament to obtain a title, it cannot be bred. In addition, the German dogs are also required to get their hips x-rayed before breeding. Here in America, if your neighbor has an AKC registered dog and your other neighbor has an AKC registered dog, they can be bred and their pups can be registered. It does not matter if they are both dysplastic or if they are both fear biters that cower in the corner when a stranger approaches. While the people that are members of the GSDCA are very nice people, their only interest is in producing a dog that can run in circles and look pretty. They pay lip service to the temperament of the breed and the majority have no concern about the working ability in their breeding program. They should rename their breed and call it the American Shepherd. That is a very sad statement, but it is true. You can occasionally find an American bloodline breeder who will brag about having some of his dogs in a police department someplace, but the sad truth is that if the dog is working as a patrol dog, it does not belong there. Most police departments don't have a clue about how to selection test a patrol dog. So when a local breeder offers to donate a dog or sell a dog cheap , they jump on the opportunity. These dogs are taken through some form of training and then labeled a "police dog". The fact is that these dogs will not protect their handler if their lives depended on it. What's really bad is that many times, these uneducated officers don't even know that if the going gets tough, their dog is not going to be there when they really need him. Unfortunately, the Germans seem to be moving in the same direction. The Germans have two separate sets of bloodlines in their country. They have their show lines and working lines. The two hardly ever cross. These people are excellent trainers. They work their conformation dogs in prey drive from the time they are small puppies. This results in the show dog being titled in Schutzhund, but the titles are all done in prey drive. These dogs lack "fight drive. The German show dogs lack "fight drive. They do not look at the helper as a fighting partner; they look at him as a buddy. Read my article on drives. A Police Service Dog or a personal protection dog needs to have " fight drive " in his temperament. Fight drive is inherited; it is a genetic factor that cannot be trained into a dog. An animal either has it or it doesn't. Our dogs here at Leerburg Kennels are bred with fight drive in mind. It is important that a newcomer to the breed does not confuse "fight drive" with "bad temperament" or "handler aggression. A dog can have excellent fight drive and still be very safe around children and in many cases, even around strangers. A dog does not have to exhibit its fight drive until it is attacked or its owners are attacked. When that happens, these dogs show the self-confidence to enter a fight with the knowledge that they can beat their attacker. Dogs can have no fight drive and still have bad temperament. You only have to look at the American Shepherd to see this. Dogs can also be handler aggressive and have no fight drive. Many handler aggressive dogs show aggression through fear. This means that they have learned to show aggression when they are placed in a position where they are a stressed. They don't understand what they are expected to do. They react to stress by biting the handler. This is not fight drive. Our kennel is not the only good breeding kennel for working bloodline dogs. If you cannot afford one of our dogs, at least make sure you are buying German working bloodlines and not German show lines, and for sure, not American lines. I had a customer send me the following e-mail. Nick is a professional dog trainer in Canada. His e-mail brings interesting insights to this article: Email My name is Nick Zevgolis and I'm a pet dog trainer in Montreal, Canada with a special interest in working dogs police, search and rescue, narcotics detection, etc. Over the years in my practice, the most disturbing part is having to evaluate what is commonly known as a "fear biter" and recommend that the owners put the dog down, knowing that the poor dog never had a chance. Most of the time, this could have been avoided had the people bought their dog from a breeder who emphasizes a proper temperament among other key characteristics. My point in writing this is to inform you that this will almost always come from a working dog breeder and rarely from a "show breeder. I will now explain these terms and explain how they differ between "show breeders" and "working breeders. Temperament is what we could loosely define as the dog's day-to-day attitude. In a working dog, most breeders want a Rock-Solid temperament. If a police dog is not stable around other officers on a search, of what value is he? By contrast, the only test of temperament that a show dog must go through is "stand for examination" by the judge. Even a spooked dog can be conditioned to pass this test with enough work believe me, I know of many such cases. Drives are a dog's inherent desire to do or perform something. A working dog must have these in abundance or he cannot ever be a reliable dog. A show dog has no need for any drive. All he has to do is be "baited" by liver while he is in the show ring. Health is a major concern of any good working breeder. This is self-explanatory, if a dog is in poor health he cannot be used to perform the task at hand for any length of time. Why would departments who are all on a limited budget invest money into an animal that cannot provide them with years of work? Believe me, these dogs cost a couple of bucks, so they need to last. A show line German Shepherd Dog is so angulated that his chances for having hip dysplasia are much greater. Just imagine the stress put on the dog's rear with that amount of angulation. A dog's nerves are important regardless of what function he will fill pet, working dog, etc. If his nerves are shaky, he is, at the very least, a difficult animal to live with, and at worst, a potential danger. A show dog's nerves are never truly tested so how can someone truly claim that their dogs have good nerves? By contrast, a working dog's nerves are tested on a daily basis in training, competing, working, and changing environments. Trainability for a working dog is essential. Why would a trainer spend hundreds of hours on a dog when the training time can be cut in half with a dog who isn't a knucklehead? Ask yourself what a show breeder ever had to train a dog to do other than be baited by food. Now to the average dog owner, if your dog lacks true trainability, this isn't the end of the world. But why do it the hard way? A pet dog owner does not need a dog with all the drive of a working dog, but a good working breeder can help you choose a pup in the litter that is a little more "toned down" and would make an easier house dog for your family. At least you can be assured of getting all the other positive traits. Consider all this when looking for a dog and understand that once you've found the "perfect pup" it's easy to ruin him if you are careless in how you raise the dog. Get professional training and make a real commitment to your animal. I just placed my female German Shepherd Dog into a new family because she lacked the drives I wanted in her in order to go on to "Doggy Ph. But she is extremely stable and trustworthy and is living with 3 young boys in the house and all the friends that the 3 young boys bring over. I do not have children, but I exposed her to them at an early age, and she is now a treasured companion and "ice cream taste tester" extraordinaire. Do your homework and be careful. Best of all, ask for trainer referrals and try to find a private trainer to help you in selecting a pup from a litter. Train and socialize the heck out of your dog and remember it's a lifelong process. It takes the right breeder, the right pup, the right owners, and the right trainer. If you get all this, it should be an extraordinarily rewarding time for you and your family.

The hair length is short and the coat lays flat against the body. The Stock coat has an undercoat, which sheds out twice per year - seasonally. It means a coat is 'plushier' than the short coat, and is preferred more in the show ring. It's basically is a longer, fuller coat. This term can be used on a Stock Coat short or Long Stock long coat dogs, depending on who is using it. Image: Chelsey V. The undercoat will be thinner in the summer and thicker in winter. As a puppy, you can not tell how long it will be. Long and full is desired with sort of a lions mane. It will not grow as long or thick in hotter climates. These dogs are stunning and in high demand. It parts down the middle of the back. It is soft, sort of fly away hair, light and very long. There is never an undercoat. It has long hair or feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. A puppy inherits only one gene form each parent. A long coat has been considered undesirable for many decades, and historically there were just short stock dogs used in breeding and selection. This puppy was considered a fault in the litter. A long coat is demonstrated only when a dog is homozygous on gene "l" - has pair of recessive l alleles at this locus. This is done to have more predictability in breeding, as mating between heterozygous dogs is highly unpredictable and has a large variety of possible outcome from producing puppies of pure short stock LL , to carriers Ll and Pure Long Coat ll. While this seems like a great idea to outcross all heterozygous on the Locus L dogs from breeding programs, this will take some time. Many "plush" dogs are very active in breeding, as frankly, they look great and thicker coat is an added benefit to those breeders that still do not accept Long Coat dogs. Large probability is only scary to those that do not understand how to predict the outcome. We enjoy learning and studying and have pretty clear understanding of what to expect in our breeding. Vom Geliebten Haus. They are a gorgeous breed that has intelligent eyes that miss nothing. Their large pointy ears are even more alert and can hear the slightest sound. They are athletic, agile, and their form is easy to identify, no matter the color of their beautiful coat. German Shepherd Coat Types German shepherds have a double coat in medium length. Their fur is thick and sits close to the body. Some dogs may have more wiry fur, while others have a soft a wavy coat. German shepherds can also have a longer, silky coat. While a standard coat is shorter, long coats have longer fur that is somewhat wavy. The fur is caused by a recessive gene and one must carry the gene to produce a long haired puppy. Long haired German shepherds have a thicker top coat and thinner undercoat than standard coated dogs, but they do have an undercoat. They can be recognized by their longer wavy fur, thicker mane-like fur around the neck, with longer tufts of fur around their ears and legs. Some are silkier, and softer in appearance while others are bushier and have thicker tails. You will hear long haired German Shepherds are also called plushies, coaties, coated, long coat, long stock hair, long stock coat, and long stock hair, and long stock hair with undercoat. Colors of the German Shepherd: German shepherds come in many colors. According to the breed standard, dark, rich colors are more desirable than pale washed out colors in the show ring. Their muzzle should also be predominately black. Although some breeders deliberately produce pretty dogs in shades of liver or blue, the colors are considered a fault by the AKC standard. The different colors of the German shepherd coat include: Solid black A stunning solid black German shepherd may have a few red or tan hairs on their toes or a small white patch on their chest. They should not be confused with a bi-color shepherd. Black and red Black and red German shepherds can come in saddle, blanket, or bi-color. They are noted by their deep, rich red pigment rather than tan. Black and tan Black and tan shepherds are probably the most popular. They come in saddle, blanket, bi-color or sable. The tan can be very pale, almost silver, or more red hued. Black and silver A black and silver shepherd is black with very pale creaming tan that looks light silvery blond. The contrast in colors is dramatic and they come in sable, blanket, saddle or bi-color. Red and black sable A sable with rich red and black fur. Tan and black sable A sable with tan and black fur. Silver and black sable Light to dark silver or gray fur with black. Liver Solid brown German shepherd identified by its brown nose, rather than black. Not a breed standard. Liver and tan Tan that liver rather than black markings on a blanket, saddle, or bi color patterns. They may also have lighter or amber eyes. Steel blue Blue, gray fur identified by their gray, blue eyes rather than brown, black. Steel blue and tan Tan with blue rather than black markings on a blanket, saddle, or bi color. Golden tan Solid tan shepherd with a dark muzzle and black nose. White A solid white German shepherd is not an albino. There white coat is caused by a recessive gene and they have dark eyes and a black nose. Panda Black, white and brown shepherd that contains a gene mutation. These coat patterns include: Solid -solid black. Bi-color-predominately solid black with tan or red on their feet. Their heels should be black or tarheel. They may have trace amounts of tan or red on their ears or face. The lower leg and stomach are usually tan or red. Saddle back-has a black saddle from the shoulders to the rear and the chest, hips and legs are tan or red. Sable-each individual hair is two-toned or banded with black tips. They can range from light to dark and include black, silver, gray, tan and red. We hope that you enjoyed these German shepherd coat descriptions. Please feel free to share with your family and friends. Hair is close to the body Hair is slightly longer than short coat Hair is longer and thicker Minimal feathering on legs and tail Feathering on legs and tail Feathering on legs and tail is more pronounced Easier to maintain and groom Can be more prone to matting and tangling Requires more grooming and maintenance Shedding can be more noticeable Shedding can be moderate Check Out Our YouTube Video on German Shepherd Coat Type Lengths… Short vs. Medium vs. They shed continually throughout the year, albeit at a varying rate as the amount of fur shed by the undercoat is heavier during the fall and spring seasons. The fur around the neck is slightly longer and thicker, and they have marginally longer hair on the rear of the hind legs to the hock and the rear of the forelegs. This type is a safer purchase for anyone unsure about the show circuit. They are also the preferred choice as working dogs. Medium-haired varieties qualify for shows as well but can be more expensive. The type at a glance: Has a double coat and a topcoat with 1 inch or shorter hair. Most common coat type. Often used in working roles such as police, military, search and rescue, and service dogs. Commands a medium-to-high price. Can enter dog shows depending on color acceptability. This entails brushing him two to three times a week. This will help remove loose fur trapped in his coat and simultaneously form a mutual appreciation bond. Brushing and de-shedding will need to increase to three to four times a week in the spring and fall seasons because the undercoat shedding increases. I like it because it reaches safely through the topcoat and removes the loose undercoat with ease. Generally, a German Shepherd needs no more than two to three baths a year. They have a fuller look, and they combine the most desirable traits of both the short-haired and long-haired types. Longer topcoat fur makes a dog look aesthetic. My German Shepherd is medium-coated, as you can see in the below photo. My German Shepherd Willow is medium-haired Plush coats have a topcoat length somewhere in between the short and long-coated varieties. They also have an undercoat which allows them to take their beautiful appearance to dog shows. On average, a medium-coat German Shepherd has a topcoat length between 1 and 2 inches. Since the greatest driver of the medium-haired dog price-hike is his ability to get into and win dog shows, you should pay extra only if you want to enroll him in one. Having said that, many owners, including myself, will purchase a medium-haired German Shepherd having no intention of showing. They appreciate the look and temperament of this type. The type at a glance: Has a double coat and a topcoat with 1 to 2-inch hair. Coat type is not common but not uncommon either. Commands premium price, especially if they have a qualifying color. Also used in various working roles such as law enforcement and service dogs. However, they will also require regular brushing. Again two to three times a week is a good practice. Shedding in plush-coated dogs also increases in the fall and spring when they shed their undercoat ready for the new season ahead. Regular brushing also fluffs up the coat for the best appearance. Before using the de-shedding tool mentioned above, I use the FURminator grooming rake , also from Amazon. This is better for thicker fur, such as the plush coat, and I use it for extra undercoat care. Medium coats should also be bathed times per year as over bathing will dry their skin and remove natural oils. However, their undercoat is often missing, which makes them unfit for AKC conformation events. The hair is often shiny and may form a parting along the back. Feathering occurs on the ears and legs, and they will have longer and thicker fur around the neck, which looks like a mane. On average, the topcoat features hair of at least 2 inches in length. In fact, in many instances, their missing undercoat requires a longer topcoat cover for temperature regulation. Ruskin House of Shepherds Long-haired varieties are considered objectively beautiful. However, their absent undercoat disqualifies them from a competition where said beauty would be rewarded. Because the long-haired variety cannot usually enter conformation, you can buy one much cheaper than a short or medium-coated dog. The least common coat type. Usually commands a lower price. Cannot enter a dog show unless double-coated. Friendlier temperament due to lack of working drive. Shedding is consistent throughout the year in single-coated dogs, without the massive increases in the fall and spring. You will still need to brush them frequently to prevent knots and tangles in the long fur. I recommend a good slicker brush, such as the Hertzko self-cleaning brush from Amazon. This brush is excellent for getting rid of tangles and knots without hurting your doggo, as the fine bristles do not scratch. They also retract back into the brush to avoid getting damaged when not in use. Looking at the appearance of long-coated GSDs, one would assume they require a lot of washing. The lack of an undercoat makes it too risky to wet the topcoat as the dog can get cold. Double Coated or Single Coated? The only German Shepherds with a missing undercoat are the long-haired ones. In some rare instances, a short-haired German Shepherd might have a very thin undercoat and might be disqualified from the show ring for the same reason. You can afford to have a single-coated pet if you live in a warmer climate. With the absence of an undercoat, they are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. That said, you should not pay a premium price for an open coat since such a coat type is considered a fault. Open Coat at a Glance Technically has an undercoat; however, it is practically non-existent as it is extremely thin. Cannot enter dog shows. It is considered a fault, the same as a single coat by the AKC. Should cost less than the average German Shepherd. Temperature Regulation Open coat German Shepherds with longer topcoats are simply called single-coated. If your dog has an open coat, he is vulnerable to the elements. Making sure your dog is sufficiently protected from the cold and heat is one of your key responsibilities. It is no wonder German Shepherds are such admired and beloved animals. From household pets to police dogs to loyal companions they are amazing creatures. But their lovable, courageous personality is not the only thing dog lovers admire. If you take the time to look, you will notice just how gorgeous their pelts are. There are various German Shepherd coat types and colors. But no matter what they look like or what flaws they may have, German Shepherds are loved, no matter what. They can range from the more common short or medium-length pelt with smooth, soft fur to the occasional long-hair coat. Some can be solid, have a blanket or saddle back or a sable coat. Below are some specific German Shepherd coat types that they can have: Short Coat Stock This coat is short and great for working dogs who need clear vision and less interference when on the run. Similar working dogs with short coats include the Belgian Malanois and Dutch Shepherd. This coat requires less grooming then over coat types making it easier to comb. This pelt type is short with an undercoat the thicker, under layer. The top coat is called the surface coat which is also known as the guard coat. The length of this pelt type is around one inch long. Medium Coat Plush This coat is much fuller and plush than the short coat. This ultra soft pelt is what makes the German Shepherd so cozy and cuddly, making it very popular when it comes to families. It is also preferred and revered when it comes to show dogs. This particular pelt type is often the most common and popular out of the three. It is medium-length and considered the breed standard by the American Kennel Club. These coats are normally one to two inches long. These dogs are also double coated. Similar to the short-haired GSD, they have an outer and an undercoat. Long Coat German Shepherds with long coats do the best in winter time. The extra long hair helps this breed stay warm during the cold months. Long tufts of hair featured along their body such as their tail, ears, or legs, help to keep them warm as well. The outer coat is soft and might not have an undercoat at all. It just depends on each individual dog and their heritage. But like the short-haired GSD do have a double coat. When the undercoat is present, their topcoat the highest layer is heavier then the undercoat made to help keep them warm in the harsh cold. Coat lengths vary from two inches long and up. German Shepherd Coat Colors When we think of the dog breed German Shepherd, the color we often first associate them with is black and tan. But in reality their are dozens of different colors they can be. There are also unique and rare patterns such as Panda German Shepherds, and uncommon colors you may have never thought a GSD could be such as red or pure white. Black and Tan This combination of colors is the most common on a German Shepherd. It is what we often see in photos and how we imagine them. These colors can often lighten as the dog gets older. When they are first born they often have more black covering their pelts. Adult German Shepherds have about an equal amount of both colors. The black is on the top of the back while also on their noses and parts of the face and ears. The brown is on the bottom and on their face, legs, neck and tail. In some cases they can even develop a grey strip that runs along their backs. This is more common with females. Their backsides are black while their stomach and feet are mostly silver. With this coloring there can be stripe like patterns that fade along their face or around their upper stomach. Their tails can be either both colors or mostly silver. Black Labradors or Newfoundlands are normally the dogs breeds we often think of when it comes to having all black fur. But a few German Shepherds can in fact have a full solid black pelt. This color breed is rare and you do not see them around very often. They also tend to be larger in size and therefore more powerful. Black and Red These two colors usually look the same on a German Shepherd as the black and tan does same pattern. Shades of red can be more of a rusty color, orange, or a deep red. Both these colors black and red are produced because of a dominant gene making the effect recessive. This color combination is often favored among breeders for its gorgeous coat shades. Their are multiple bi-colors variants. The first is Rich Bi-color which means they have another color along their legs and face. Black Bi-color Melanistic is when their paws and legs are brown. And finally Faded Bi-color which is when they have the most brown which fades into the black. This brown color can be seen on their paws, legs, chests, faces, and at times tails. Sable Sable is more of a color pattern then an actual color. But Sable can come in many different shades including black, fawn, brown, silver, tan and about any other color you can think of that German Shepherd coats may have. Sable is a dominant color and is unique and beautiful. Sable often means that, although the rest of the hair is a different color, each fur will have a black tip. Although in some rare cases they can have black over their entire body. The most common colors for Sable are black, brown, and even silver. In rarer cases they can be red which are usually covered with a layer of black hairs. Panda This rare piebald pattern adorning a GSD is a true wonder. We do not see Panda German Shepherds often and when we do we may not realize what type of dog breed they are. It occurs when crossbreeding a black and tan dog with another dog of solid color. It is no surprise these dogs are popular and beloved. Blue These German Shepherds can at times remind us of wolves with their black-blue tinted fur, especially if they have longer fur. Their noses are usually bluish. They are quite beautiful and because of their blue fur usually have lighter colored eyes such as gold or amber. This blue color can also be called a shade of grey such as steel or silver. These dogs are very popular because of their lovely coats. Their can also be different color combinations associated with this color including Blue and Sable, Blue and Tan, and Blue and Black. Liver Similar to the Red German Shepherd this dog has a reddish pelt, almost strawberry blonde or light brown. A unique feature involving a Liver German Shepherd is their noses which tend to be pink or brown. This is unlike darker German Shepherds who have black noses. They can have color combinations such as Liver and White and Liver and Tan. This coloring is due to a recessive gene. This dog often has amber or golden eyes because of their lighter fur tones. Liver German Shepherds are one of the rarest colors and these dogs are difficult to find. White Bolt, the main character in the beloved Disney movie , is an example of an all white German Shepherd puppy. With their erect ears and body type they can be compared to the White Belgian Malanois. This pale dog is white because of its recessive gene. These dogs often have dark brown eyes. Their color is considered a fault and not recognized as an official type of German Shepherd. There are all kinds of strange color combinations. Being rare often means they are more expensive and are a top choice for dog breeders around the world. Albino dogs have to do with loss of pigment, which is a result of cells unable to produce melanin brown or black pigment occurring in hair. This lack of pigment not only includes skin and fur but eyes as well as blood vessels resulting in a pinkish-color. If you have or know of an Albino German Shepherd they may have issues and health problems. These dogs are incredibly rare yet beautiful creatures. Isabella Isabella German Shepherds are something you will rarely ever see in your lifetime. This stunning color variation consists of Liver and Blue colors explained above. These odd dogs often times have different colored eyes such as greenish-gold or light blue, and noses that you would not normally expect. Which Coat is The Best? Every type of coat length from short to long has their advantages and positives. For example some owners prefer long because they like to travel in harsh snowy environments and longer fur so that they can cuddle with their soft pets. But in most cases the medium-coat is the most desirable. More specifically with the double coat. The medium-coat is not too long so that it requires lots of grooming and money but not so short that the hair is wiry, rougher, and not as soft. The dense outer coat also helps to protect them from both cold and warmer temperatures. Conclusion There are so many wonderful German Shepherd coat types and colors. These tones and fur lengths make them special in their own ways. German Shepherds luscious coats are one of the many traits that make them so beautiful. If you have this breed of dog as your own then you are aware of their true beauty: inside and out. Please leave a comment below and let us know what you think! What is your favorite out of all the German Shepherd coat types? What is your favorite color and why? Let us know! We would love to hear about your story! Share this:. When you think of a German Shepherd you may picture the typical black and tan one from movies. But these gorgeous canines actually come in a much larger variety of colors and patterns. The color of their coat depends on their particular genetics. Genes that are dominant are the more common ones you see, while genes that are recessive are rare. Some colors are considered faults and are not recognized by the AKC. Common Colors 1. Black and Tan Black and Tan is the most common color pattern — which is usually black marking and black saddle, with tan chest and legs. They may also have their accent color extend from their neck to their tails and underneath their bellies. Black and Red Quite similar to Black and Tan, but markings are a deeper, more vibrant red appearance. This particular dog is long coated with a large black saddle and red markings. The markings are faded to resemble an almost white or platinum appearance. Bicolor Also considered a variation of the black and tan, bicolored dogs have smaller patches of accent color. Markings are much less prevalent on a Bi-color. Sometimes these accent colors extend to their face, jaw, inner ears, and eye brows. Black German Shepherd Black is uncommon due to being a recessive gene but still prevalent within the breed. Typically they are completely black with no other colors on their body. But sometimes, they have a few white patches on their chests. Sable Sable-colored shepherds tend to have bands of colors in their fur. Basically, their coat is made of strands of various colors like brown, black, silver, and red. These bands usually have a layer of black hair over them. Individual hairs may have multiple colors as well, a phenomenon called Agouti hair. The most common sable combination is black hair over cream bands. Some even have gray over silver or black over silver combinations, which actually makes them look a lot like wolves. Rare Colors 8. White German Shepherd As you might expect, these dogs are completely white throughout their body. Although majestic looking, white is still considered a faulty trait by most kennel standards. White is actually a genetic defect that masks all the black parts of the dog. Since this is undesirable in dog shows they are rarely bred. But some enthusiasts do still breed them, and are now called by a variety of names such as the White Swiss Shepherd and the American-Canadian White Shepherd. You can learn more about dog breeds that look like German Shepherds or descended from. Sometimes these puppies are born with very light eyes as well. This too is a rare recessive gene, and considered a fault color by AKC. Liver Image Courtesy of: Ruskin House of Shepherds Liver is another recessive gene leading to liver-colored offspring. In dogs like this, all the black parts are a brown or liver color, ranging from light to dark shades. They may also have light eyes, which typically changes into a darker color later in their lives. There is no shortage of controversy with the Panda Shepherd. However, new research confirms this was not the result of crossbreeding. Do Colors Change Their Temperament? But there is absolutely no difference when it comes to purebreds. German Shepherd Coat Length 1. So basically, any service dog, police dog, or military dog you see is usually short-haired. Somewhere in between Short and Long coats lies the Medium Length. The long hair grows around their faces, tails, ears, tummies, rear, and the back of their legs. That also means there is a lot more grooming requirements. Their hair is prone to matting, and requires daily brushing. However, shaving them is dangerous as this is a double coated breed. Well, this verdict has led people to only breed certain types of qualifying colors. If your dog is strictly a pet, then this has no bearing on your decision. Blue, Liver, White, and Panda are all instant disqualifying faults. Long hair may also be disqualified. Blue eyes are a fault. Combined these layers are used to regulate body temperature, protect from harmful UV rays, repel water, and protect their skin. What About Single Coats? Note: Single coats are considered a breed fault, and not recognized by the AKC. Therefore, many years of selective breeding have made single coated litters a rare occurrence. Can You Shave a German Shepherd? But those layers of fur also keep them cool in the summer, and insulate them from warm air. Due to primarily being a working dog, they had to work in all sorts of weather conditions. The result: daily excessive shedding that helped keep their coats in the best condition. Unfortunately for you that means a lot more brushing and bathing. Learn how to deal with German shepherd shedding Shedding Season Although these canines shed throughout the whole year, they shed most heavily in spring and autumn. This helps them regulate their body temperate and stay cool in the heat. Again, during autumn, the thin summer undercoat is shed away and replaced by a thicker coat. This is their winter insulation to keep them warm in the cold months ahead. Not to mention it keeps their hair healthy and beautiful. While regular brushing removes loose hair, it also gets rid of mats and tangles, which are a common sight in long and medium length coats. In most cases we recommend an undercoat rake for brushing and to reduce shedding. Longer hair lengths would also benefit from a grey hound comb a long pinned steel comb. The trick is to use a deshedding shampoo and conditioner to help slick down hairs and make them easier to remove. The short answer: As little as possible. The long answer: It depends. Speaking with groomers on the topic, they recommend a healthy double coated dog be bathed once they start to get stinky. This is typically once every 8 to 12 weeks depending on their activity level. Bathing too often can strip away their natural oils, leading to dry and irritated skin. Nutritional Requirements for a Healthy Coat Since these are large breed dogs with active lifestyles, they need a protein-based diet. The main ingredients should be sourced from high-quality meat such as poultry, beef, and fish. This is an extremely important part of their diet because fat strengthens skin and hair follicles. Skin and Coat Friendly Ingredients To make sure your dog has a healthy coat, here are some of the things you should look out for in its food: Vitamins A and E Vitamin A is one of the most important vitamins your dog should be getting in its diet. This vitamin helps the skin cells to divide and hair follicles to function normally. Vitamin E is also in the essentials list. It acts as an antioxidant and protects the skin cells. Both of these vitamins ensure that their coat keeps growing and shedding as usual on a micro level. Vitamin B Complex Biotin, or the B- complex vitamin, is also incredibly important for skin and hair strength. Some young dogs and puppies can actually suffer from a biotin deficiency. When this happens, your dog will have crusty and flaky skin. Its hair will become more brittle and lose its natural color. If you see these symptoms, contact your vet about adding some biotin to their diet. Copper is essential in keeping their fur soft and shiny. It also maintains the unique hair color that it was born with. Zinc, on the other hand, works with developing skin health. It helps to prevent inflammation and itchiness. It also works well at tackling and stopping both bacterial and fungal infections. Contact Your Vet Before supplementing, always contact your vet before hand. Related Posts. A rich diversity of lengths, colors and pigment—combined with a number of varying body types—make the German Shepherd one of the more structurally diverse of all dog breeds. From the short stock coat of the East German working line dogs to the extreme long stock coat of some West German show-line dogs—there is a shape, style and color tailored to you and your lifestyle. There are three main types of hair on German Shepherd Dogs: ground hair undercoat , guard hair topcoat and whiskers. Dogs with both an undercoat and a topcoat are called double coated. The first layer, or undercoat, functions primarily as insulation and is soft and usually of a lighter color. The second layer, or topcoat, consists of thick-shafted, coarse hair. It also has weatherproofing qualities ideal for working and playing outdoors. With rare exception, most German Shepherds have double coats—though the degree of undercoat can vary widely. German Shepherds can have little to almost no undercoat or have massively dense, woolly undercoats that require daily maintenance. Double coats are ideal for maintaining warmth in colder months, but also provide cooling in the summer by keeping heat away from the surface of the skin. For this reason, the shaving of double-coated dogs is not recommended if they have prolonged exposure to the elements. Their coat helps regulate body temperature and protects their skin from harmful UV rays. Shedding German Shepherds, aka German Shedders, shed and shed a lot. Working dogs are required to do their jobs regardless of weather or terrain. To keep their coats in optimum condition—daily, excessive shedding is needed. Unfortunately for us, this means additional brushing and bathing. If you do not own a good vacuum cleaner or sweeper, you will need to purchase one if you have one or more German Shepherds inside your home. In the spring, their thick winter undercoat is shed and replaced with a thinner, cooler undercoat. In the fall, their summer undercoat is shed and replaced by a thicker, warmer undercoat. Care and Grooming Daily brushing and frequent bathing are your best defenses against excessive shedding. Bathe and groom puppies frequently so they learn to enjoy—or at least tolerate—the experience. Most German Shepherds enjoy a good grooming and since most love water in any form , bathing can also be a pleasurable experience for them. Daily brushing and frequent bathing are your best defenses against excessive shedding. Brushing Most double-coated breeds like German Shepherds need to be brushed regularly—especially if they have a thick undercoat. In the spring and fall when their coats are being blown, daily brushing is important. This helps reduce the amount of hair inside your home and removes their undercoat more quickly. While regular brushing is great for removing loose and dying hair, it also gets rid of mats and tangles—which are common with long- and medium-length coats. Mats are not only unsightly, but they can be painful due to their closeness and tightness to the skin. In southern parts of the country where humidity is high, mats can also lead to skin irritations as the dampness can encourage the growth of skin irritants and other microbes. Check your German Shepherd often for mats—paying special attention to areas behind the ears, between the legs and along the back of the thighs. If your dog is a short stock coat with little undercoat, occasional brushing and bathing is all that is required to keep their coats looking great. Calming bed for dogs who suffer from anxiety. Water resistant and tear resistant cover. Non-skid bottom. Replacement covers available separately. This short coat, with a thin undercoat, is easy to maintain and can require little or infrequent grooming. Bathing is a breeze as their coats are designed for waterproofing and dry quickly. Water generally rolls off of the guard hairs of German Shepherd Dogs. For all of these reasons and more, short stock coats are the preferred coat type for service dogs, police dogs and military dogs. The dog pictured to the right is an excellent example of a very nice, healthy coated, short stock coat—with minimal undercoat. Medium stock coats have longer, thicker hair on the neck, underbelly and along the back of the thighs. Their undercoat tends to be more dense than that seen in the short stock coats of West and East German working lines. Medium stock coats require additional grooming to keep their coats in optimum condition. Note also that medium- and long-coated dogs do not shed more than their short stock-coat counterparts—the hair shed is just longer. Hair around the face, ears, chest, bottom line and back of thigh panties can exceed four inches in length. This coat requires regular care and grooming. Hair, especially behind the ears and between their rear legs, is prone to matting, and requires daily brushing. The American Kennel Club AKC is one of the few show organizations that still considers a long stock coat to be faulty. Long stock-coat dogs are not only accepted by most German Shepherd Club organizations, including the German SV, but they have become valuable and sought after in recent years—and compete at the highest levels in Germany and world wide. Note also that these coats often continue to grow in length and density with age, so older dogs require additional daily care and grooming. All coat colors and lengths mentioned above are attributes of purebred German Shepherds. However, some breed organizations consider certain characteristics to be breed faults and can be penalized or even disqualifying in the show ring. However, if you plan to show your dog, you will need to study the standard and requirements of your desired show organization s to ensure your dog is eligible to compete and title in the show ring. But the German Shepherd of today actually comes in a variety of colors and patterns as pictured above. The color of their coat is determined by genetic makeup. Genes that are dominant are more common, while those that are recessive are more rare. Black and Tan This is the most common color pattern—which is usually black all over, with tan or cream-colored chest, shoulders, legs and thighs. There are many color variations to this pattern, most commonly—black and red, black and cream and black and silver. Bicolor Another variation to the traditional black-and-tan colored dog are bicolored dogs. Their bodies are predominantly black with a secondary accent color on the lower legs that can be tan, cream, gray or silver. All of these black areas, also called points, on the legs and toes should be richly pigmented. A dog is not considered to be bicolored unless it has these distinctive black markings and they can appear on both dual- and sable-patterned dogs. Sable The word sable means the color of black. The definition of a sable pattern refers to guard hairs being tipped with black. The more guard hairs and the longer the tipping, the darker the dog. Black sables are dogs with heavy tipping and less ground color. Agouti is a term that refers to the banding or grizzling of hair coloration that can be seen in varying amounts in the neck, shoulder, tail, croup and border markings in saddle-marked dogs. Some German Shepherds have so much grizzling in the black blanket or so much undercoat showing, that they are hard to distinguish from sables, and some sables that carry the partially-hidden, saddle-pattern recessive gene have so much of that recessive showing through that they look like washed-out saddles. Melanistic is another term associated with black coloring. Melanistic refers to the amount and density of melanin black pigment found within the hair shaft. Melanistic coloring refers to the masking of a color or pattern with black. Sable-colored German Shepherds are infamous for changing colors multiple times before reaching maturity. Adult dogs can have a completely different coloring and pattern then what was present as a puppy. No good dog is a bad color. Black is uncommon due to being a recessive gene but still prevalent within the breed. Typically, they are completely black with no other colors on the body. Solid White Solid white German Shepherds are not albinos. Their color is the result of a recessive gene that can be carried by any colored dog. When learning about pigment and color patterns, understand that white is not a color. There is no solid-color gene for white. The more pure white a dog, the lighter the color of its masked color underneath. Every white German Shepherd is really a traditional color and pattern covered by a white mask. The blue colors in these dogs replace the black areas of their more common black-and-tan counterparts. Blue dogs often appear as a dusty or somewhat light gray with a gray leather nose. Sometimes puppies are born with very light eyes as well. This, too, is a rare recessive gene and considered by the AKC to be a faulty eye color. Isabella An Isabella German Shepherd, aka lilac or mouse-gray German Shepherd, is the result of a recessive gene dilution giving them a washed-out silvery-blue color. The color is not technically a blue, however. The color is most widely recognized within the Weimaraner breed. Because Isabella German Shepherds are less common and considered faulty for showing purposes, there are fewer reputable and responsible breeders. Select your Isabella GSD breeder carefully and insist on thorough health testing information and lineage information. Liver Liver is another recessive gene leading to liver-colored offspring. In a liver-colored dog, all the black parts are a brown or liver color, ranging from light to dark shades. They might also have light eyes—which typically changes into a darker color with maturity. Panda The Panda German Shepherd is a piebold-colored dog meaning no more than 35 percent of its body is white with mixed patches of black and brown. Research confirms that this pattern is not the result of crossbreeding—but rather a genetic mutation. Ticking vs. Roan vs. Blue Merle Ticking is flecks or spots of color on white areas. Most ticked dogs are born white and develop ticking as they mature. Generally, ticking is heaviest on the legs and muzzle. Roan is a pattern of white and colored hairs evenly mixed over the white areas of the body. Roaning creates a near-solid pattern over a white coat causing a dog to appear dusted with white. If the predominant color of the dog is black, then the roaning can appear bluish in color. People sometimes confuse merle dogs with roan or ticked dogs. Merle dogs do not have a white base coat of color, however, some merle dogs are ticked. The genes responsible for ticking, roaning and merle are dominant so a purebred German Shepherd cannot produce these patterns without being crossed with a dog breed that carries the genes. As we can see from the images above, German Shepherds come in an array of coat colors and patterns—including saddle, blanket, bicolor, sable and solid colors. The organization does not, however, allow dogs of these colors to be shown in the conformation ring as these characteristics are faults according to the German Shepherd breed standard. Dogs carrying the liver gene or the recessive dilution gene that produces either Isabella or blue dogs also carry serious penalties in the show ring. Liver, blue and Isabella are not recognized because of the color of their leathers; and the solid whites are omitted due to the absence of black in the hairs on top of their backs. If you wish to campaign and show your dog in the conformation ring however, you will need to keep with animals with traditionally accepted colors and patterns. Dogs that are liver, blue or Isabella are severely penalized. Reverse Mask and Maskless German Shepherds The reverse mask aka wolf mask German shepherd is not a mix or hybrid, but rather a dog presenting a pattern that appears when both parents carry the gene for this coloring. These patterns date back to some of the earliest German Shepherd foundation dogs and still appear in certain lines, today. Rin-Tin-Tin was another reverse-mask without the stripe German Shepherd. The reverse mask can also present with or without the wolf stripe running down the nose. Some dogs are born with the wolf stripe but it fades with maturity—while others maintain the stripe. Maskless German Shepherds are dogs born with no mask, meaning their face coloring is the same as that of their body. Maskless dogs most commonly present as solid cream, tan, gray or silver. Both reverse mask and maskless German Shepherds are considered faulty lacking pigment for conformation purposes. Impression and Expression Impression — an idea, feeling, or opinion about a dog formed without conscious thought—or formed on the basis of little information. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. It looks substantial, giving the impression—both at rest and in motion—of muscular fitness and nimbleness. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility—difficult to define, but unmistakable when present. Aside from overall outline, size and strength of body, the head is the most prominent feature of a German Shepherd. It is here that we find expression. The head should convey strength of character, intelligence, confidence and nobility—even in the very young. In recent years, some show lines have developed a black-face mask in which the entire mantle and muzzle of the dog is predominately black. Any feature that detracts from the overall impression or expression of a dog can be less desirable. Black-faced German Shepherds have become very popular, but some traditionalists believe this pattern can in fact, change the expression of the dog—giving it an intimidating or less approachable expression. Most of the top VA dogs in Germany still carry the traditional mask pattern, but there are many up-and-coming black-faced dogs vying for the top spots. Another example of how color can impact expression is eye color. Light eyes on a German Shepherd overpower other aspects of the dog and change its expression from that of a traditional, loyal shepherd to that of a more elusive, mystic wolf. For this reason, the breed standard calls for the eyes of German Shepherds to be as dark as possible. In the show ring, light eye color—especially yellow hues—are penalized. So, keeping all of that in mind, it would be best to feed them four cups of dog food daily. We recommend brushing them at least 3 — 4 times per week with a slicker brush and daily when your pup is shedding. So, it would be wise to take them on walks twice a day, breaking them into 30 minutes each. And if you have a house with a fenced yard or garden where they can play and move around at their own pace, that would be the cherry on top for them. Caring for Italian Bulldogge Italian Bulldogges have a short fine coat that is not adequate to protect them in extreme weather. They need a cooling vest in the summers and a sweater in the winters to remain comfortable. Nevertheless, these cuddly companions demand much care, food, and maintenance. Therefore planning for everything your pup needs at home will help guarantee that your new pet lives long and gives you the company you desire. Be Consistent My first tip is that you must be super consistent when teaching your puppy. When I got my puppy, my OH had an annoying habit of allowing little Raffles to bite him, saying it was just because the puppy was teething. Raffles has a habit of dashing off to play with other dogs when we go to the park, and the best way to train him to recall reliably is to promise him a treat when he comes straight back to me. Teach Basic Commands Decide on a few basic commands that you want your puppy to understand and be obedient to, and focus on training him to perform those early on. We taught Raffles to sit, lie down, get down, leave it, stay, and come when called. Those basics are extremely helpful in many daily activities. For example, when getting a lively, curious puppy ready to go on a road trip to the park, it can be challenging to persuade him to have his harness, collar, and lead put on. So, with treats in hand, I instruct my puppy to sit down and remain sitting while I put on his collar and harness. When he tries to grab the harness in his mouth, I tell him to leave it. The penny will eventually drop! Dog breeding is both an art and a science. Breeders use genetics and temperament, among other things, to select which puppies will be the next champion. However, you must always be alert to choose the best breeder. For instance, if the breeder is unskilled, there may be a chance of genetic flaws or health issues. Besides, you risk infectious illnesses if a breeder sells Labradoodles before receiving veterinary treatment or vaccinations. You must exercise caution while evaluating puppy mills to get an experienced and qualified breeder. Overall, they make excellent companions. Due to their easygoing nature they usually do well with other pets and are generally good with children. As a result, they require exercise every day and can be prone to restlessness or loneliness if left along for too long. Their activity level and larger size means they are a good fit for a house with a yard. They are great walking companions and actually love the water and can be exceptional, natural swimmers. Due to their Poodle genetics, incorporate educational games to stimulate their intelligence as well as their bodies. Training Training a Labradoodle is easier than many other breeds, because they are eager to please and intelligent which makes them attentive while learning. They respond best to positive reinforcement due to their friendliness and intuition. Praise for good behavior in the form of treats and affirmation will work best when training. As with every other breed, train and socialize your Labradoodle when it is a puppy and exercise it regularly in order to avoid negative behaviors. Generally though, brush them about twice a week to keep their coats clean and mitigate shedding. However, it should only need to be bathed as needed. They also tend to be less prone to odor than other breeds. For optimal health, brush their teeth about three times per week to avoid bacteria and tartar buildup. It is also good to trim their nails about twice per month. However, the Labradoodle did not truly come to be known until when Australian breeder Wally Conron crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. His goal was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador Retriever to create a hypoallergenic guide dog. The cross breeding was a success and resulted in a dog that had a disposition appropriate for guide dog work with a low-shedding coat. See store for details on a particular puppy. How to find a reputable Labrador breeder and avoid puppy mills Be very wary of Lab puppy mills and backyard breeders when looking for your new dog. As mentioned, Labs are one of the most popular dog breeds, and being so in demand can push the price of puppies up, especially if you only have limited breeders where you live. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. If we have helped you create a budget that allows you to get one of these amazing pets, please share this guide on how much it costs to own a Labrador Retriever on social media. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:. Your Labrador puppy will need a bed, collar, leash, poop bags, food bowls, food, treats, toys, grooming supplies, and a dog crate. It is important to get any dog licensed to avoid legal issues. Training Labrador Retrievers are easy to train and do not require professional training. But, some keepers choose to take their Lab to puppy school. Because they are highly motivated, Labradors also do great in agility training. This is also a great way for them to use up their energy. Owners can either build their own agility course or pay to put their dog in agility classes. Vet Fees and Insurance One of the most expensive parts of owning a dog is all the vet visits. This includes all of their shots and monthly checkups. A way to help reduce the cost of veterinary bills is through buying pet insurance. It is best to start paying for a pet insurance policy when your Labrador is a puppy. Senior dogs are more expensive to cover since they are more likely to develop health problems. Food When it comes to feeding a Labrador, they are not cheap. Labradors eat a lot of food. They are medium to large-sized dogs and weigh around 70 pounds. These prices are based on feeding a high quality kibble. Wet food can easily cost several hundred dollars more. Backyard Breeders One important thing every potential owner should remember is to avoid backyard breeders and pet shops. It is true that these places sell dogs for a much lower price. But, that does not mean they will be cheaper over their lifespan. Backyard breeders do not screen their dogs to determine if they have inheritable health problems. This results in Lab puppies being born that are more likely to develop health issues such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. These breeders also do not provide proper veterinary care for their puppies. Many are sold while having worms or fleas and having received no socialization. Ethical Labrador breeders ensure their breeding stock is screened and their puppies are healthy and socialized before placing them into their new homes. Labrador Retrievers can develop diseases of the eye. The form of this disease that is very common is Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration. Caused by an inheritable genetic mutation, it ultimately leads to blindness. Screening will help to prevent you from buying a puppy that may become blind later on in life. Dogs with this disease will lose their sight between one and eight years of age. Hip and Elbow Scores Another health problem that Labradors are prone to is hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a genetic skeletal disease that causes the hip joint to not form properly. This results in the femur grinding against the hip causing deterioration and loss of function. Many Labradors with this condition end up having to undergo surgery to reduce pain and regain function in their hips. The average hip score for a Labrador retriever is 12, so any score below that is considered good. Ideally, good breeders will only breed dogs with hip scores under .This will prevent you from purchasing a Labrador puppy that will require expensive surgery later on in its life. Purpose American Labradors are best suited for active families. Families that enjoy activities such as swimming, running, and hiking. They are great for families with older children who can engage and play with them more. American Labs would also do best with owners who can dedicate more time to them because they require a lot of exercise every day. People who work from home or part time would be ideal. English Labradors would make great pets for quieter families because they have a calmer personality. They are also gentler and would do well with a family that has young children. Since they are less active, they are suitable for a busier family who has less time to exercise them. Their docile, patient attitude also makes them excellent candidates to be service dogs so they would be a great dog for people who need one in their life. Summary The price of a Labrador can vary depending on if you get one from a breeder or rescue. Its color, pedigree and health will also influence the price. All Labradors are prone to health conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and hip or elbow dysplasia. Make sure the breeder screens for these health conditions before breeding. This will help to ensure your puppy is healthy. The cost to keep a Labrador healthy, exercised and happy can get pricey. But, if an owner has done their research and prepared themselves, then Labradors make an excellent addition. What Lab do you prefer? American, English, or mixed? Let us know! Alone Training Teaching your Pug puppy that they can be totally fine being left alone can be done with stuffed chew toys, time and patience. Remember to do it slowly to avoid any stress! Toilet Training Training Practically every website you read may tell you that Toilet training your Pug puppy can be a challenge. As with alone training, start sooner rather than later. Of course, if they run into any birds, butterflies and hear planes flying over, it will be great for them to get acquainted already. Have fun gathering surfaces with different textures for them to explore, like synthetic grass, tiles, and soil. Use treats! Remember to use lots of treats and praise when training. They love making your tail wag! Repeat their name to them a lot in the first week, so it really starts to click. Recall — How to teach your Pug puppy to come back when called — This is important for safety. Pugs generally stay close, but they can be very friendly and want to run up to people and other dogs for a bit of a cuddle, so a good recall will always help. But they can enjoy fetch games on a smaller scale, get on the floor and interact and play with your Pug puppy to learn what they enjoy. This will help to avoid resource guarding. Husbandry Tasks Pugs love affection but should be handled with care. Be mindful to not treat them like toys. Not going to blame children to think they are toys though — the resemblance is uncanny. To do this we want to teach them that hands will do nice things to them so use plenty of treats when handling your puppy. Week 2 — Training your Pug puppy Week 2 already! The bad news? Housebreaking is hard. Getting started early on their training will pay off in the long run, saving you lots of unwanted accidents and surprises throughout the house. If your pug starts to actively sniff, circle the room, or run around excitedly out of the blue, they may need a bathroom break. Whining, sitting near the door, or giving you anxious, nervous stares are other common signs of a full bladder. To do this, hang a bell by the door at pug level, of course and use treats to get them comfortable with it. Establish a routine Pugs are little dogs, and that means they have little bladders, too. Get in the habit of taking them out as soon as you wake up, shortly after they eat a meal, after playtime, before you go to bed, and every hour or so in between. Each time you take your pug outside, return to the same spot. No luck? Bring them back inside and try again in 20 minutes. Your pug wants to please you, so seeing how proud you are when they do their business outside will encourage them to keep up that behavior. The shame may actually encourage them to find hidden spots around the house to pee and poop. Instead, clean up the accident with a pet cleaner so that there are no lingering smells in the house that would encourage them to keep going to the bathroom inside, and focus on taking them outside regularly to prevent repeat accidents. If you do catch your pup starting to pee or poop indoors, firmly say no firm, but not yelling! Reward them if they finish their business outside so that they know that they ultimately did the right thing! Consistency is key in many things, and housebreaking your pup is no different. And, while it can be a bit challenging and you'll have to devote quite some time to this, if you follow these guidelines you are sure to find success. These tips will be applicable for both young puppies and adults of any age that need to re-learn the rules. The main goal will be to train your Pug that one certain area outside is the bathroom area. And, that when you are not home to take your Pug there, pee pads are used for bathroom needs. While the exact time needed for potty training varies depending on how often you are there to actually teach the lessons, expect for this to take about 3 months for your Pug to be fully trained. Also, plan for there to be little setbacks here and there as your Pug learns these important lessons. Above all else, do not give up. The Pug is a breed that aims to please. With proper prepping and patient guidance, your Pug can be a very well-trained dog. Step 1: Prepping No doubt, you want to get right into housebreaking your Pug; however, prepping is a vitally important step and is needed to ensure your Pug is set up for success. Certainly, while you are setting things up, bring your Pug outside as needed details ahead. And, once you have everything in place, you'll find that house training is easy and accidents are few and far in between. Those that do happen will be nicely contained. Choose a designated bathroom area. Your Pug should not just go to the bathroom somewhere outside. Pick on certain area that will be used. This should be away from family foot traffic like outdoor barbecue areas and easy to reach no matter what the weather. Choose a containment method. If your Pug is allowed to roam the house or even just an entire room like the living room or family room this will inevitably lead to puddles of pee and piles of poo all over the place. So, the goal is to keep your Pug in one spot any time that you cannot closely supervise. This means when you are busy cooking dinner, taking a nap, etc. The goal should also be that the area is very comfortable, with everything a Pug needs to be content: Quality bed, lots of fun toys, and food and water bowls. One of the best methods to create this sort of contained area is via an indoor canine playpen. These are square or circular heavy-duty plastic open-topped pens. Some have doors and these are recommended. This is 24 inches 61 cm high and offers 8 square feet of space perfect for a Pug puppy. It has a nice little door to easily get your Pug in and out, and the door can be left open when you're home and watching your pup and closed when you're away. What's nice about this is that as your Pug grows, you can add on panels to increase its size. And, it comes in 7 different colors, to blend in nicely with your home decor. This is a bit taller at 34 inches 86 cm and it's circular in shape, offering 21 square feet. Though it's roomier, it will still keep housebreaking accidents contained and serve the purpose of keeping your Pug in a comfortable spot while you work on training. No matter which option you choose to create this sort of defined area, it should be lined with pee pads. While a puppy will not automatically know that the pads should be used, they will be used by default. If you find that that your Pug doesn't use the pee pads , urine and feces end up near them instead of on them, or they are moved or chewed on, this can be addressed by using larger ones, using a method to keep them in place, or using alternatives like reusable pads or even real grass patches. Have a supervision method. Since your Pug will be in a contained area see previous point 2 any time that you cannot closely oversee your pup, it's now time to choose a method of effective supervision when you are there to do so. The goal will be to have your Pug close enough that you'll be able to interrupt any attempts to pee or poo in the house. It's important that you don't just assume you'll somehow do this. Puppies dart around quickly and Pugs of any age can move around a corner and leave you a nice little present in the blink of an eye. You'll want to avoid accidents like this since each one is a step in the wrong direction and a missed opportunity to instill house training lessons. One of the best ways to keep your Pug right near your side is the tethering method. Your Pug will be on leash and harness and you will have the other end connected to you. Please note that a harness must be used, not a collar. Brachycephalic breeds like the Pug should never be on leash and collar no matter what; it can constrict the trachea and cause breathing problems. Next, under point 4, you'll see details of what you'll need to tether your Pug while house training. Have two leashes and at least one harness. As mentioned above, you'll want a leash and harness combo for when you are supervising your Pug. You will also need these items for when you take your Pug outside for bathroom needs. There are several types of accessories that will be used for these purposes: 1. A comfortable, properly fitting harness. This is for any time your Pug is on leash indoor tethering to you or being taken outside. Unlike collars that put strain on the neck and trachea and is a big no-no for brachycephalic breeds, a harness distributes pressure over the much stronger back, shoulders, and chest. This is super easy to place on you just slip your Pug's front paws through the leg holes and then there is an adjustable buckle and Velcro on the back to secure it. There is an o-ring right between the shoulder blades to connect the leash. This is padded for comfort and the material is a breathable air-mesh. It also comes in 13 different colors, so your Pug always looks stylish. A short soft-handled leash. This is the type of leash you'll want to use when you are with your Pug indoors and supervising him during house training. You'll want the leash to be short about 6 feet to keep your Pug close. And, the soft handle will allow you to either slip it over your wrist or secure it through a belt loop, which allows both of your hands to be free. A retractable leash. For when you take your Pug out to the designated bathroom area, it can be useful to have a retractable leash. And, these are great for taking walks as well. Being able to adjust the length at any time is a huge plus and helps you stay in control of your Pug. It can extend out to 16 feet and even comes with a lifetime guarantee. Have effective training treats. A big part of housebreaking is being able to let a puppy or dog know that they did something right by going to the bathroom in the designated area. This teaches them what is expected and offers motivation for doing that action again. Praise works to some degree; however, the fastest method is to combine praise with reward in the form of a training treat. There are a few elements to keep in mind: The treat should be something reserved for reward not given as a snack at any rate , small so it doesn't interfere with appetite , moist which is often more appreciated over dry , and packed with flavor. You'll also want it to be up to the standards of any food that your give your Pug, meaning made in the USA, no chemical preservatives, no artificial additives, and no fillers like corn or soy. Choose the cue words. Dogs always learn best when they can connect a word or phrase to an action. So, when you are potty training your Pug puppy, you will want to use one certain phrase each time you head outside for bathroom needs. You'll also use this phrase again to mark the moment that the deed was done and when you give reward details ahead. Common choices are 'do the deed', 'pitty-potty', 'bathroom', 'potty time', and 'get busy'. Choose whichever phase you like, but make sure that it's one you don't mind saying out loud in front of other people. Arm yourself with an enzyme cleanser. It's important to clean any accidents the right way. Urine and stools contain certain enzymes that soap and water do not remove. If these enzymes remain, they will produce a lingering odor. You may not smell anything, but your Pug with exceptional canine senses will indeed pick up the scent. It is a strong motivator to go to the bathroom in that area again. To prevent this from happening, clean any accidents with soap and warm water, blot it dry, and then spray the area with a cleanser like Simple Solution Enzyme Formula , allow it to stay there for 5 minutes, and then blot the area dry one last time. To summarize your housebreaking prep: You have a method of keeping your Pug in one area like a playpen that is lined with pee pads for any time that you are not closely monitoring things, you have a supervision method for when you are watching your pup, a designated bathroom area has been chosen, you have training treats to hand out for reward, you have a leash and harness for your Pug, you've chosen cue words, and you have an enzyme cleanser to deal with any accidents in the house. You're now ready to fully house train your Pug. Step 2: Taking Your Pug Out for Bathroom Needs You will want to take your Pug to the designated area: Right after your puppy or dog wakes up About 20 minutes after a meal Every so-many hours, depending on age. This is typically every 2 hours for a 2-month old, every 3 hours for a 3-month old, etc. Before each walk allowing a dog to pee and poo along the walking route is a missed opportunity to teach house training rules Before bed Any time that you are supervising your Pug and there is a motion to pee or poo Right when you get home if you've been away As you can imagine, you'll be quite busy bringing your puppy outside many times each day. Fortunately, as a puppy matures, the bladder and bowel muscles become stronger and there is a gradual ability to hold bathroom needs for a longer duration. Still, an adult Pug will need to be brought out 4 to 6 times per day. The exact steps are as follows: 1. Quickly bring your Pug to the exit door. If you must, carry him or her. It's okay if some urine dribbles; as long as your pup finishes urinating outside, consider it a 'win'. As you are heading out, grab the training treats. Also be saying the cue words out loud. Example: 'Let's go do the deed, do you have to go do the deed? Bring your Pug to the designated area and stand in the center of it. With your Pug on leash and harness, allow them to sniff around and choose the perfect spot. Plan to be patient. Some dogs can take up to 15 minutes, particularly if there's a need for a bowel movement. If your Pug pees, but you think he may need go number two, remain in the area. As the deed is being done, offer praise, 'Good dog, you're doing the deed! The very moment that your Pug is done, offer both praise and reward, 'Good dog, you did the deed, good dog! Both of you need to work as a team. If you find that things are not going as planned, re-read the rules and see how closely you are following them. Ahead, we'll touch on some commonly seen house training issues and how to deal with them. Going to the bathroom right after coming back in the house: A very common complaint by owners is that their Pug is peeing in the house soon after being brought back into the home. It can seem as if a pup is doing this on purpose, as if the dog is mocking the training system. But the answer is far more logical than that. In most cases this is because the owner did not have the patience to wait outside while the puppy chose the perfect spot and the body relaxed enough for urination or the muscles had time to push out a bowel movement. After the body relaxed or the bowel muscled readied, the pup was brought back in and of course, went to the bathroom where he or she was at the time: in the house. Stay outside for at least 15 minutes while your Pug is learning his or her housebreaking rules. This can seem like a very long time while standing there and waiting for a dog to go to the bathroom. For this reason, it can help to set up an outside chair, bring a book or take the time to check emails and messages. Barking at night - Is it a bathroom need or a call for attention? One of the hardest elements - but one that you will soon conquer - is to learn your Pug's signals that there is a bathroom need. One of the most challenging times to figure this out is at night when you are awakened by barking. If you are unsure, it's always best to bring your dog outside. However, it will be important to make it very clear that this is a serious time. No playing, no talking and right back to bed afterward. If you are quite certain that barking is due to attention seeking behavior and not for housebreaking reasons, as long as you are sure your Pug is safe and comfortable, all yelps and whines should be ignored. Constant bathroom needs: Puppies may need to pee every couple of hours and adult Pugs depending on how much they drink and often often they eat may need to head out 6 or more times per day. If you feel that your Pug needs to urinate much more then normal, this can point to a health issue with bladder infection and UTI being the most common. So, it's always best to check with the veterinarian. Correcting vs punishment: Pugs are very sensitive and do not react well to being yelled at. For housebreaking, that sort of reaction to accidents will not get you anywhere. Pugs tend to have their feelings hurt if not disciplined the right way and therefore rubbing a dog's nose in poop or getting upset will not be beneficial to actually teaching what is expected. It is best to give tons of enthusiastic praise for deeds done right and forgive accidents. Did you find this to be helpful? Training crate Remember, it could take months for your Pug to reach your potty-training goal. The important thing is to remain calm at all times, observe patience, and be prepared for some slightly messy accidents along the way. This will then help you devise an appropriate potty schedule. Take your pup to the toilet every 30 minutes throughout the day. Helpful hack! Young pups may not be able to hold their bladders through the night. So try to wake them up every hours for a toilet break. Top tip 2 — limit exposure to the home Cordon your puppy off to one area of the home whilst potty training. By doing this you can keep an eye on your pup easily whilst they are still learning about their new environment. Supervise your puppy really closely whilst they are going through the potty training phase. Once you know the cues, you can limit any future accidents. When your pup wants to go outside, walk them directly to the area where you want them to go potty. Once your pup does their business give them a little treat to reinforce the behavior. Top tip 3- use cue words Start using the same cue word every time you take your pup outside to do their business. Keep it simple. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water.
