Welcome to Von's Staffords I have been involved with training and breeding dogs for 45 years. My mother was a dog person and this was the life I grew up in. I spent most of my childhood working with many different breeds and learning the strengths and weaknesses of each breed. I trained obedience dogs professionally beginning at the age of 21 and was involved in as many of the active sports as I could manage with my own dogs. I first entered the show ring when I was 25, and began showing Giant Schnauzers. My husband Scott anxiously awaiting the outcome or decision at ring side. This was a family affair in our house with my oldest son joining me in the ring. First in juniors and then in the breed ring. My husband not yet getting up the nerve to go into the ring himself, was watching closely all the different breeds and to my surprise looking for a breed he could call his own. After finishing my first champion Scott decided he loved the bully breeds and we purchased our first American Staffordshire Terrier in .In the five years of showing Am Staffs, I was able to finish 3 Champions, but my husband still had not stepped into the ring himself. We still have one older Am Staff girl in our family today. At the same time as we began purchasing our Am Staffs, we began learning about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I later would co-own this dog with it's breeders and dear friends of mine Marie and David McNally. With being close to home and having to come back to the show for Group, I ran home and grabbed my family to come see this wonderful dog. Today we have six great Staffies in our home and five of the six are finished champions with mutiple breed and group wins. The sixth will just begin entering the show ring this year and is expected to do great things. We have also bred many Champions that are living with their families in other areas in the country. Since we have had several dogs in the top 10 in the United States and are very proud of each and every one of our dogs. Today our focus is on educating people about the breed and producing dogs that are healthy, quality stock, and with the best personalities possible. Each of our dogs lives in our home and are members of the family. Not all of our dogs go to show homes and that is great with us, but all of our dogs go to loving, very carefully picked homes, and that is without exception. If you have any questions about this wonderful breed or any of our own dogs, please e-mail us and we would love to share all we know with you. All of our puppies are out of champion parents with the classic look of the breed and disposition that is both family friendly and intelligent. Whether you are interested in a Staffy to take into the show ring or are simply looking for an epic family friend, we can help! A Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breeder with a Sterling Reputation If you want a dog that is smart and is gentle with children, our Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies are fully prepared to surpass expectations. As an award-winning AKC breeder, we employ a more responsible approach by ensuring that every one of our puppies goes to a safe and loving home. If you purchase an Irresistibull Stafford as a pet, we only sell them with a no-breeding clause to prevent the puppy from being used for an irresponsible breeding program that continues to give the breed a negative media reputation. We never use harsh corrective techniques--only positive reinforcement--for encouraging calm and healthy behavior. Our litters are introduced to both a group of friendly, well-trained dogs, and how to be responsible indoor dogs. They come with complete medical records, including the health certificates for both parents. You and your family begin this relationship with as many positives as possible right from the beginning. We will check into your background and review how you have cared for your pets and working dogs in the past. Once you are approved, you may select your puppy from a current available litter or talk to us about reserving one from a future litter. While we do have multiple breeding dams in our program, our focus is obtaining the next Champion dog. There may be a wait of several months to a year for a puppy to become available. For more information about our breeding and show program, click or call today. We are always happy to provide accurate information about the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and our breeding and training systems.

He can also be a bit stubborn but overall a complete joy. He rings his bell to go out to potty, at only 17 weeks can sit, stay, go down, roll over, leave it when treats are placed on his paws very impressive for a little guy , shake a paw or high 5 and has the best and most entertaining personality. He loves people and from what little interaction he has had with other dogs, seems to love them as well. We couldn't be happier with our newest family member. We really enjoyed meeting all the dogs, especially Flower and Finn. Of course, we also enjoyed the chance to speak with you and your trainers Colton and Daniel. Mountain Rose exceeded our expectations. After getting to play with the dogs in person, learning more about your program and seeing for ourselves how the puppies are being raised, we are even more excited about getting a puppy from Mountain Rose. Our fingers are crossed that Flower comes into heat soon! We also enjoyed seeing the Bordoodles at your daughter's house. Jonathan was very accommodating in showing us all five Bordoodles. They were very excited and fun to meet. Thanks again for your hospitality. She originally had reservations about us buying a Bordoodle. She said that she was unfamiliar with this breed and cautioned us and even advised that we may wish to look at a "purebred" dog. We just wanted to share that with you. He has really fit into our family and it's so fun watching him learn our routine. He's made friends with lots of the neighborhood kids and is super friendly with everyone. I take him to puppy school once a week with our son Carter he's 9 because Carter was having some trouble being the "pack leader" when we first got Gussie, but the puppy school has been great and Gus lights up the second Carter gets off the school bus each day. I attached a couple of pictures for you to see how much he's grown! She's so smart that at 4 months old she can play dead when she is shot with a "bang", she can heal like nobody's business, and she sits like a lady waiting for us to open the door before she goes out or comes in. She gets her treats in her bowl after dinner. All in all she's pretty terrific. He is definitely part of our family and we love him so much. He's such a smart dog! I remember when we first got him, his color was black. You said he would likely lighten up. Here's what he looks like now. Breeding the Poodle to a Border Collie greatly reduces or can even eliminate shedding. The Border Collie — Poodle cross is a great choice for people who enjoy the attributes and intelligence of a Border Collie and want a non-shedding coat. Any way you name it, the dogs are highly intelligent and great looking too! Growing up, Border Collies were my breed of choice, and they were amazing, but the shedding and over the top drive to work all day every day was more than I can handle in my current lifestyle. Introducing, the Bordoodle. Bordoodle puppies excel in Agility, as service dogs or therapy dogs, and as fun loving pets enjoying day to day life with their owners. The typical family that does well with a Bordoodle wants an active family pet to compliment their lifestyle. Our families take their dogs hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing, paddleboarding, to the lake, beaches, and more. We definitely produce dogs that are more chill and laid back, but our families getting a Bordoodle really want that high intelligence factor. Bordoodles make an incredible Agility, Performance sports or just an overall amazing trail buddy. Our Border Collies come from incredible herding lines and are great all around dogs. Testimonials Wilder, now 3 month old, is awesome. He loves all of us, loves to please, and loves to explore and learn. Several neighbors and friends are jealous, and others have asked to help them with theirs. However, we met one of your older dogs at a restaurant last year, asked the owner about him, and immediately began researching Oregon Bordoodles. She is the most personable, intelligent dog I have ever owned. When we started looking into getting a Bordoodle we were fortunate to find Danielle, who answered all our many questions and worked closely with us throughout the process of picking a puppy and finally bringing our baby home. He is a spunky, energetic, loving dog. He loves to play and he is very brilliant. He can learn tricks in 10 minutes and will remember them forever. All of our lives have changed with his presence, but we would not trade him for any dog! It has been pure ease and love on every step of our journey. Lassie Grace is a love, with over the top energy and enthusiasm for life, hikes miles easily, with daily mile walks. Strong, muscular, guardian of her domain, still very puppy with ongoing training as she matures, never met a stranger human or canine , shining star at the vet and groomer they all love her disposition and they send me compliment notes on the joy she brings into their work space. She is high test energy yet mellows and melts right into you for love, confidently submissive, a total kid dog. The puppies were happy and at play in their warm and loving farm environment. We picked our female, red merle pup and named her Daisy. Danielle has provided us with excellent technical and emotional support as Daisy has grown. We love our year and half year old Bordoodle. Daisy is extremely cheerful, freindly and smart. She enjoys all ages of people, especially children. She is low shedding and rarely barks. As a very active dog, she requires consistent and lively exercise and play. Daisy is a great addition to our family and we love her dearly! Are you wondering what a "Bordoodle" is? Bordoodles are extremely intelligent, friendly and eager to please. They get along well with other dogs and children and are very easy to train. Bordoodles are often referred to as a "designer breed" or "Poodle Hybrid" which is not, technically, true, as all dogs are the same species. Life Span Did You Know? The Bordoodle is a designer dog breed. They are a cross between a Border Collie and a Poodle. Although a hybrid breed can take on any combination of characteristics of one or both of the parent breeds, the Bordoodle tends to be a friendly, affectionate, and loyal family dog. The Bordoodle is a playful, loving, and affectionate family dog. They get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They can be protective and initially wary of strangers, but do not tend to be aggressive as long as they have been properly socialized. As with any dog breed, poor socialization or training can result in poor behavior including fear-based aggression. But, these dogs generally have a lively, social, and friendly disposition. Although the Bordoodle tends to have a lot of energy, they can adapt well to just about any living situation. They will do well in large homes with room to roam as well as apartments as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Bordoodles bond closely with their families, they thrive on attention and affection. This, paired with the fact that they are easily bored, means they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed breed can inherit the potential health concerns of one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. For the Bordoodle, potential health concerns to be aware of include allergies, epilepsy , hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to ensure preventable issues are not being passed on to puppies. Bordoodles tend to be highly intelligent. Although they are eager to please and tend to pick up on things quickly, they are also easily bored. This can pose a challenge for some first-time dog owners. But, overall, the Bordoodle tends to be highly trainable and a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They are eager to learn and respond best to positive methods focused on praise and rewards. Puppy training classes are always an option and are a great way to socialize a puppy too. When it comes to coat care, the Border Collie is lower maintenance than the Poodle even though they shed more. You need to be prepared for either type of coat or anything in between with your Bordoodle. The Poodle coat may be low-shedding, but it requires daily brushing and almost monthly grooming in order to stay healthy. The Border Collie coat sheds moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a Border Collie is on a weekly basis and bathing is as needed. Weekly ear checks with careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. The Bordoodle can range from moderate to high energy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run should be sufficient to keep this dog happy and healthy. Trips to the dog park, playing frisbee, hiking, running, swimming with your dog , and more can all be great activities for you and your Bordoodle to do together. A fully-grown Bordoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Bordoodle generally lives years. Bordoodle Puppies for Sale. A designer cross between a border collie and a standard poodle. Border collies are well known for their intelligence, loyalty, train-ability, and desire to please! Turn on your tv for 5 minutes and you will see a border collie featured in many of the commercials that pop up. Why the standard poodle? The original notion for crossing poodles with other breeds in general is the benefits of their curly non shedding coats, and the cute scruffy or teddy bear-like appearance they produce. But what many people don't realize is that the standard poodle is not the frufru, yippy, entitled breed you have imagined. They are actually the number 2 breed for intelligence after the border collie, and you will not find a more versatile or affectionate, companion! Combining these two breeds is a no-brainer, I'm amazed it has taken this long for this cross to gain popularity. I currently work for Emily at her primary business as a pet stylist, and have for about 3 years now. I'm passionate about dogs and about this amazing cross. I have already produced 2 amazing litters with my Willow Hill Borderdoodle, Ula, and am so excited to introduce our new Willow Hill Border doodle and future mama, Fiona from Menace and Pippen. We are located near beautiful Madison County Virginia where my dogs and pups are a part of my family and are raised inside my home! Why Willow Hill Borderdoodles? These are not backyard science experiments or accidents. I have researched, planned and teamed up with other amazing owners and breeders both near and far, to be able to form the most ideal parent pairs, producing the most fabulous additions to your family! My focus is health and temperament! You will notice that all of our parent dogs are fully health tested for all hereditary illnesses associated with their breed you can view their individual profiles on our hunks and gals pages. Because of my background as a vet assistant, you can be sure these pups are raised correctly; pups leave for their new homes at 8 weeks of age having been de-wormed every 2 weeks, and having a full health check by a licensed Veterinarian and all age appropriate vaccinations. They will also be well socialized and started on potty training. Did I mention all of our pups come with a 2 year health guarantee! If a congenital or hereditary defect is discovered by your vet we will refund or replace your puppy! The benefits associated with first generation Bordoodles, include a more diverse genetic makeup than purebreds reducing possibilities of disease and other genetic conditions that affect the parent breeds. Bordoodles are also hypoallergenic, that is, unlikely to cause allergy in humans. The breed Bordoodles were designed so that families who did not live on a property would have the opportunity to own a dog from the Border Collie line. This gorgeous dog combines the intelligent farm breed with a poodle to create a more family friendly pet. This breed are fantastic with children as well as other animals. The Bordoodle is an affectionate, loyal and intelligent companion, the perfect addition to any family. The Bordoodle is a reasonably active breed so do require regular exercise. This is influenced by the genetic make-up of each pup with some pups appearing more Poodle-like and others more Collie, therefore, it is impossible to predict the exact size a pup will grow to. The standard Bordoodle will be a medium to large sized dog weighing approximately kg and reaching cm in height. The mini Bordoodle, will be a small to medium sized dog, weighing approximately kg and reaching cm. Bordoodle colours also vary in each litter, we expect wheaten, chocolate, black and blue merle coats in our litters. Generally, the coat types are classified as fleece or wool, the fleece coat is a mix between the Border Collie and Poodle coat, it is a soft curl or wave which is low to non-shedding whereas, the wool coat is tight and curly like the Poodle and non-shedding. The amount of grooming required is dependent on the type of coat each individual pup has. All Bordoodles will require some grooming and clipping, especially those with a fluffy, woolly, non-shedding coat, as it will not fall out. Dogs with a more predominantly Poodle type coat also need regular brushing to prevent knotting. Bordoodle ears, as with all floppy eared breeds, need cleaning regularly or they may become infected. Around the eyes, should also be cleaned daily to prevent buildup eye discharge and tear staining. Please note that a Standard Bordoodle will require a yard and would not be suitable in an apartment. The Bordoodle is a fun-loving family pet that is excellent with children and other pets. The expected adult size are medium sized dogs, around cm tall and kg. Contact Us BorDoodles Bordoodles are a wonderful mix of big brains and big hearts. Perfect for those looking for an active, intelligent companion. Our bordoodles are a mix of border collie and poodle. In this cross we hope to harness the intelligence and working drive of the border collie as well as the less serious nature and allergy friendly coat of the poodle. About Border Collies: Border collies consistently rank 1 on lists of most intelligent dog breeds and over the years we have found that to be very accurate. The border collie is an incredible athlete, amazingly intelligent and intuitive and has boundless energy for work and play. People typically revere these dogs for just those reasons. Whip smart, capable of amazing athletic feats and always eager to learn, the border order collie ranks highly on my list of favorite dog breeds and has since I rescued my first BC years ago. With all of that said, border collies are NOT for everyone because they are so smart, athletic and energetic. A bored border collie can be a nightmare. In the right hands they are awesome and in the wrong hands or inexperienced hands they can be a handful for sure. About Poodles: The poodle is a sporting dog, bred for cold water retrieving. In fact, poodles also consistently rank in the top 3 most intelligent breeds. They are also incredible athletes and have lots of energy. They do tend to be more low key than a border collie but they were also bred to work long hours in the field so we should not kid ourselves into thinking they are just a pretty ornamental breed. I have very much enjoyed the goofy, playful personalities of our poodles over the years and obviously the no shedding factor is a plus as well. Our poodles are eager to please, quick learners and all around great dogs. See our Doodle FAQs! The Bordoodle is best suited for active families. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Photo by Shane Guymon on Unsplash Why do puppies eat stones? Puppies eat stones to investigate their taste and texture, to chew on while teething, to strengthen their jaw muscles, due to a lack of calcium, nutritional or dietary deficiencies, boredom, or because they are a breed that likes to have something in their mouth, such as Spaniels and Retrievers. Puppies will often put everything in their mouths , including rolling stones no not Mick Jagger or holding pebbles in their mouth. Most will spit them out, but some will try to swallow them too, which is dangerous! How do I get my puppy to stop eating stones? To stop your puppy from eating stones, ensure that their nutritional needs are met, that they are not bored, that they have ways of expressing breed-specific behavior, teach them to leave it and drop, and stop any punishment-based techniques that you may have been tempted to use. Prevent boredom by using enrichment toys Brain games and puzzle toys w ill all help to prevent boredom in your dog, and give them something better to do than entertain themselves with stones. OCD obsessive-compulsive disorder Brain lesions Early intervention is very important to prevent pica from becoming a chronic disease. There are several training approaches that I explain further below to prevent any bad habits. Curiosity Young puppies are extremely curious and want to explore their environment all day. Chewing and mouthing things provide a puppy with plenty of information and increases the scent perception. Supervision will be mandatory to quickly intervene in case your dog accidentally swallows something. My dog used to be very mouth oriented as a puppy, so you had to be very alert during walks. After a few weeks, your puppy should grow out of that curiosity. Because pica and curiosity are not easy to differentiate, an appointment with the vet should be able to rule out any underlying medical issues that would need to be treated. Boredom A dog that is bored will get into all kinds of behavior habits like digging, excessive vocalization, or chewing. This mostly happens in dogs that are left outside in the yard alone for an extended period of time. With nothing to do, your dog will quickly get into digging up the grass or chewing on stones. To solve this problem, you can read my guide on 12 boredom busters that will keep your dog entertained in the yard. Make sure that your dog has plenty of physical exercise s as well as daily mental stimulation. Puppies love to get engaged with a tug -of-war and a few short walks will do the trick. Dietary Deficiencies Puppies need lots of calories and proteins for optimal growth. An unbalanced diet may have serious consequences. Your dog will try to get his nutrients from somewhere else, whatever that will be — stones or even feces. Dog food specifically formulated for puppies should provide him with everything he needs. The sharp edges of stones could break teeth and injure the digestive tract. The results of this would be diarrhea , vomiting, pain, and even internal bleeding. Your dog could suffocate if he chews on multiple stones at a time. The older your puppy becomes, the less he will be mouth orientated, and the more he will explore his environment by simply smelling. Typical chewing and eating behaviors may stop at around 6 months of age. But some dogs will never grow out of it, especially if it was reinforced in the past through negative attention. To keep your puppy safe until this age and to prevent the behavior from becoming chronic, training and prevention will be necessary. My Rottweiler picked up all kinds of nasty stuff as many puppies do and that includes stones. Fortunately, my dog never swallowed the rocks but carried them instead. Nevertheless, I had to discourage her from picking up things for a couple of months until the behavior slowly faded. How to Stop a Dog from Eating Rocks The first thing to help eliminate the problem would be to remove any stones from his environment including the house and yard. During walks, pay close attention to your puppy. Is he just smelling the roses or secretly picking up pebbles? You may want to look into a mesh muzzle like the Lepark Nylon Mesh Dog Muzzle that will prevent your dog from picking up any stones in the first play. Follow the steps in my muzzle training guide for a proper introduction. This will not only help with eating stones but will also get some structure into everyday play sessions. Follow the steps in the infographic below and your puppy will learn it so quickly: Do not engage with your dog in any play involving stones, rocks, or similar objects. Following these tips will eventually stop the behavior with the right prevention, supervision, and training. And always keep in mind to take your dog to the vet first. Pet Deterrent Spray for Stones Aversive conditioning can be very successful if the eating is targeted to a specific object. Rather than punishing the behavior, it will reduce the likelihood that the dog will perform it in the first place. If your puppy usually chews on stones, spraying something unpleasant on top of it is a form of prevention. It is important to choose a non-toxic and effective spray like this Bitter Lemon Spray for Dogs. You may have to try a variety of different sprays as some dogs weirdly like the taste. If your dog shows any sign of illness, call your vet. Post navigation. Puppies are always exploring and picking up things in their mouths. More often than not it tends to be things that are rather dangerous if swallowed. There are things you can be doing to stop puppies eating stones. Chewing stones is a common problem, particularly with puppies. They usually grow out of this behaviour, but sometimes the habit continues into adulthood and often surgery is needed to remove them. You can see here a Labrador who ate 13 large stones! Why does my pup eat stones? We are not sure why stones are so attractive to chew or swallow, but it could be a throw back to their ancestry as wild coyotes and wolves are known to chew stones. However, vets do not advise you letting your dog eat them as they can break their teeth and get caught in their intestines and lead to serious health problems. Sometimes there is an underlying health problem that makes your dog eat pebbles. It could be ill or in pain or another possibility is that it could be deficient in phosphorus, calcium or iron. Or it could just be plain boredom and the dog needs more stimulation and exercise. Again a necessary trip to the vet! Training puppies to stop eating pebbles For puppies, the best training solution is distraction. Take a variety of toys and play with him so he learns there is an alternative to stones. Try not to tell him off as this can reinforce the behaviour. Begin practising with a toy that your puppy is showing interest in. Hold it in one closed hand and let him sniff it. Wait for him to turn away and then immediately praise and offer him a better reward from the other hand. Using this principle continue practising bringing in other toys that he finds more tempting. Try the technique with items on the floor as well. Fortunately, with time and patience and plenty of playful interaction with toys this behaviour can be stopped. If you require further help or advice on this topic please do not hesitate to contact us. Attention Seeking by Dirt Eating? Your dirt eating dog gets a lot of attention. I bet you want to stop me! Dog dirt eating can be completely resolved by giving them a bit more exercise or attention. Ignore any dirt eating behavior from your dog. Something Buried in the Soil Dog dirt eating can just be a result of a strongly flavored area of soil. Perhaps something tasty to your dog has been spilled there, or is buried in that patch of soil? It might help just to wait them out and see if they return with anything specific or interesting. This option is especially worth considering if your dog keeps digging and snacking in the same place. Why Do Puppies Eat Stones? Dirt eating in dogs is bad enough, but it can be the tip of the iceberg. Eating stones is a very common activity among puppies. In many cases, it probably starts with the puppy just exploring a pebble or two with his mouth. Puppies are similar to toddlers in that way; they use their mouths to explore new sensations. But of course, we worry that the puppy will choke or swallow the thing, and we try to get it off him. It helps to avoid the swallowing habit getting started. Puppies often grow out of eating rubbish. But, if your dog eating stones or rocks persists into adulthood it can be much more serious. Why Do Dogs Eat Sticks? Many dogs that appear to be eating sticks are actually just chewing them up. For Labs, this chewing is often born from their retriever instincts. Still, stress, boredom, and anxiety exacerbates these chewing tendencies. Most of the tiny bits that the stick breaks down into, are spat out. But if your dog is actually eating and swallowing wood, then you should be worried. Swapping the stick for something tasty makes it less likely that your dog will swallow what is in his mouth, or run off with it. However, for some dogs, eating everything and anything is a real psychological problem and health risk. These dogs often consume items of clothing such as socks , dishcloths and cleaning rags, toys, batteries , sticks and pretty much anything they find lying around. Why Do Dogs Eat Trash? Many dogs love a good trash rummage. There are a few reasons why your dog loves to snoop in the trash. Dogs also love weird smells. Still, trash-loving dogs have serious issues too. Either way, if you find it happening too often or your instincts tell you there might be more to it, see your vet. Eating organic waste such as rotting animals or animal waste products is natural behavior for your dog. Dead seagulls, horse manure and his own poop, are actually substances your Labrador can digest. At least, for the most part, with no ill effects — however disgusting we find his behavior. But, perhaps the most common source of anxiety for new owners, is the dog that eats poop, whether his or that of other dogs. Still, take comfort from the fact that unless your dog has developed a taste for poisonous mushrooms it happens , for the most part he will probably come to no harm from eating organic material. Unfortunately, this is not the case with dogs that consume inorganic objects. With a few dogs, however, regardless of how it started, eating everything becomes a dangerous habit resulting in repeated foreign body ingestion. Indeed, a few dogs do seem hellbent on getting themselves onto an operating table. These are dogs that eat stones, nails, plastic bags, and the contents of your washing line. We are not talking about the puppy who once swallowed a pebble that you tried to take out of his mouth. Or the dog who eats the rotten dead squirrel he finds on a walk. We are talking about regular, compulsive eating of inappropriate and inedible items. And if your Labrador falls into this category, it can be very upsetting and frustrating — not to mention expensive. I have known two dogs like this. One was a Labrador of my own who compulsively ate clothing. And another was a flat-coated retriever who ate dangerous quantities of vegetation. He eventually needed an operation to remove a large spiked piece of pyracanthus a prickly shrub from his stomach. Several dogs have had to undergo major surgery after eating a stomach full of pebbles on the beach, or swallowing cutlery or laundry. Use a trash can with a locking lid. See some of our favorite dog-proof trash cans here. This will keep your dog out of the trash at home, at least. Get your dog checked at the vet. If your dog keeps eating dirt ravenously, get them checked for anemia or any medical conditions that could cause pica. Distract your dog from dirt, stones, and other trash by swapping. You can see some of our favorites here. This may cause them to swallow it. Gently approach and try to swap the harmful object. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise everyday. This reduces boredom and the desire to dig. Provide lots of supervision. If all else fails, see a behaviorist. Do your best. If the dogs seems well and happy, the vet will usually advise a wait and watch policy to see if it emerges through the normal channels. Then, talk to your vet by phone if you are not sure whether to take the dog into his office. Make sure your dog is supervised in areas that they could get into mischief Puppies Teething puppies can chew items such as stones to relieve the discomfort of new teeth coming through teething. They can also be interested in stones as a play object or because they are bored. Just like human babies, puppies explore their environment with their mouths. Care must be taken to supervise puppies where they could ingest foreign material leading to a blockage in their intestines, a life-threatening condition. Anxiety can manifest in inappropriate, destructive behaviour, urinating or defaecating in the home or through pica. So the resultant behaviour is of an anxious reaction or one of frustration. Puzzle feeders and interactive toys can be useful in getting your dog used to being happy by themselves or self-soothing. Consider seeking help from a veterinary behaviourist your vet can direct you to a suitably qualified person if this type of intervention is needed. Medical reasons Some medical conditions lead to excessive hunger polyphagia and inability to use food as energy and so dogs will begin to see non-food items as edible. Some medications such as prednisolone can also lead to pica as a side effect. Parasites such as worms take away some of the nutrients your dog consumes and so leads to weight loss and polyphagia and sometimes pica. Not enough nutrition would also be a leading cause of pica. What to do if my dog eats stones? Firstly, schedule an exam with your veterinarian A physical exam potentially in combination with blood tests, urine and stool samples, can investigate any underlying issues with your dog that can be medically addressed. A complete diet formulated by veterinary nutritionists will be the easiest way to ensure your dog has the right ingredients for health for their life stage. Furthermore, have fun Make sure your dog is properly stimulated. Have lots to do in the office that day? Make sure your dog is supervised in areas that they could get into mischief Alternatively, remove them from their environment and introduce training methods early. Look into puzzle feeders to make mealtimes more interesting and take longer so your dog is distracted if you have specific tasks to get on with that day. It also can help them learn to relax on their own or enjoy time with yourself; leading to a well-rounded happy dog. Further Reading:.
A mixed-breed can inherit any combination of traits from their parents. Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Pug Mix. Featured Pug Mix Article. Knowing what your Boxer Pugs will be like is a gamble, but the breed is known to have some standard features you can expect. Boxers are large dogs, while Pugs are small. You can personally visit their shop and see the conditions of the dog, and it is one of the most definite ways to see how legit their business is, and the breeders would gladly be proud of their property. Ask your friends for a referral. If you already have friends who own a similar breed or other mix breeds, asked them how their experience was with that particular seller. You want to watch out for signs that point to the seller being dishonest. Approach your local shelter or vets for recommendations. Asking their opinion about mix breeds and breeding practices should help you with your decisions. Ask if they have any suggestion for breeders, or if they also have particular kinds which they can recommend for you. Always get a guarantee from your breeder; in cases, your puppy shows health problems. Grooming them is easy, and here are some basic things you have to observe. Brush their coat at least two to three times a week, to keep their fur looking excellent and clean. Clean the folds and wrinkles on their body. Doing so prevents bacteria from breeding. Check their eyes, and clean any dirt surrounding the area. The breed is known for suffering health injuries on the eye, and you want to prevent any harm from these areas as much as possible. Make sure to cover the simple basics of regularly cleaning their ears and eyes, trimming their nails, and brushing their coats. However, because of their flat face, their eyes are sometimes prone to injury. Here are some common health conditions which Boxer Pug Cross are prone to having. Hip Dysplasia — most of the time, this condition has something to do with the genetic component of the dog, and Pugs are one of the dogs known to have this component. Through time, the condition can put a strain on the muscles of your dogs and cause them extreme pain. Here are some of its common signs: Limping. Yes Royal Canin is the best, then you have Eukanoba which is a bit cheaper and then of course Pedigree, which I persoanlly do not like. Although there is a new pedigree advanced or active which I am told is better, but dont know if it comes for pups also. At two months of age you can give 4 meals to your dog and at 3 month about 3 meals. Please note that calcium and multi vitamins should also be given to your pup. You can also prepare home made food, the only problem is that after the pup grows up you will have to feed and make a lot of rotis. For home made food you can have veg or non veg. But it should be cooked properly. Do not give sweets to your dog its not good for them. The breeder is the best option to get a proper diet sheet as it will be breed specific. If you see on the long run a food like eukanoba which is cheaper that Royal canin will be better and more convenient for you also and I dont think it would be that expensive, plus follow the feeding instruction as the dog will eat less of it also. On the net there is a golden retreiver club of india and it may be a good idea to contact them too to get a diet sheet etc or speak to breeders listed there regarding care for goldens, grooming, training etc. The picture of the pup looks ok, but remember that they will go through a ugly stage while growing up so dont panic if suddenly your dog does not look like a golden and looks prety weird. You have seen the parents and hopefully your pup will turn out to be like them. All the best. Check Price on Amazon Chicken Chicken is used in a variety of dog foods. This high-protein food will provide plenty of nutrition for your Golden Retriever. Chicken also contains glucosamine and essential amino acids for strong bones. Make sure the chicken is boneless and skinless, as the skin contains a lot of fat. Never feed cooked chicken bones to your Golden Retriever because they are fragile and can crack in his mouth, causing serious injury or choking. Coconut Giving your Golden Retriever coconut is a tasty human treat. Did you know that coconut is technically a fruit, which can be confusing! But, as a result, it lacks the majority of the proteins that cause tree nut allergies or sensitivities, such as those found in almonds and cashews. Coconut is high in antioxidants, which help the immune system, reduce inflammation, and prevent viruses. You can feed a small piece to your Golden Retriever to see if he likes it, but make sure the shell is removed first. Corn Corn is a starchy vegetable that will provide your Golden Retriever with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. However, I believe it is an excellent option if your Golden requires a fast energy boost during periods of high exercise. So, what about popcorn? You should not serve your dog popcorn that contains butter or salt. Cucumber Although you may find cucumber amongst the vegetable display in the store, it is technically a fruit! Cucumbers, in any event, will provide a lot of nutrients to your Golden Retriever. Calcium, magnesium, copper, and potassium are all present, and vitamins K, C, and B1. Eggs Golden Retrievers can safely eat eggs. Eggs are known for providing a natural nutritional balance. But please note that this risk is minimal, and you can further reduce it by using free-range eggs and storing them in a cool, dry environment. Green Beans Green beans are delicious and nutritious for your Golden Retriever. The majority of dogs seem to like them. They are high in fiber, important vitamins, and minerals and have a low-calorie count. To avoid choking and to aid digestion, break them up into small bits. Milk Milk is quite safe for Golden Retrievers to consume. However, as with all dairy foods, the amount of lactose your dog can handle is something to consider. Once a week, my dog enjoys a small bowl of milk with no negative consequences. Milk is rich in calcium, which is good for strong teeth and bones, and it also contains vitamin D, which is good for bone health. It contains potassium, which is excellent for the heart and all of the essential amino acids, and a variety of vitamins, minerals, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Noodles For Golden Retrievers, a small treat of plain noodles is a nutritious human food. Iron, folate, manganese, and B vitamins are among the micronutrients contained in them. Soft flour milled from traditional bread wheat is combined with water or eggs to make noodles. So, if your Golden Retriever is allergic to eggs, stay away from egg noodles! You should also avoid them if your dog suffers from a wheat allergy. Japanese ramen noodles are high in sodium or have added soy sauce, and your Retriever should especially avoid them. Oatmeal Oatmeal is safe for Golden Retrievers if fed in sparingly. This staple food is high in fiber and packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. If your dog is allergic to grains or wheat, oatmeal is a perfect alternative, but, contrary to popular opinion, food allergies in dogs are uncommon. Mix the oatmeal with the water and give it without butter or syrup. Remember that this is a carbohydrate with a lot of calories. Parsnip Parsnips are an excellent vegetable to feed to your Golden Retriever since they are high in potassium, folic acid, and vitamins C and B6. They support a healthy kidney function as well as the nervous system. They are better cooked, but they can be eaten raw if cut into small pieces. Since parsnips are very starchy, just feed them in moderation like other root vegetables such as beets, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Pasta Pasta is usually made with semolina flour milled from durum hard wheat. After that, water or eggs are added, and the mixture is mixed into a dough and formed into different shapes and sizes before being baked or boiled. Pasta should also not be eaten by Golden Retrievers who have a wheat allergy or a reaction to grains or eggs. Once thought to be fattening and starchy, this staple food is now considered nutritious and high in energy. Pasta sauces are bad for dogs, so go easy on the spaghetti bolognese! This is because garlic and onions, all of which are toxic, are often used. Peanuts are legumes in the sense that they develop in pods that mature underneath the ground, similar to peas and lentils. However, they are classified as a nut for nutritional and culinary purposes. Peanuts are high in fiber and healthy unsaturated fats and contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. One or two plain unsalted peanuts are fine for your Golden Retriever to try. However, keep in mind that they are high in fat and may cause stomach discomfort because fat is more difficult to digest. Peanuts are high in calories, and you should be aware of the potential for choking. Peanut Butter Your Golden Retriever can eat peanut butter, but some brands contain xylitol a sweetener that he should not eat. Be sure to read the label carefully and select an organic brand with no additives. Peanut butter is a high-value treat that is suitable for use during training. This smart toy, with its unpredictable bounce, will keep your Golden occupied for ages. Peas Peas are high in starchy carbohydrates, which help to increase energy levels. They are also gentle on the digestive system of your dog. They are high in vitamins A, K, and many B vitamins, making them beneficial to the eyes, heart, and skin. Iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and fiber are all contained in peas. Fresh or frozen peas are also fine, but your dog should avoid canned peas due to their high salt content. Pineapple Pineapple is a sweet and tangy fruit that is high in vitamins and minerals. In hot weather, frozen pineapple chunks are a refreshing treat that will keep your dog cool and hydrated. However, due to its high sugar content, you should avoid canned pineapple. Pork Pork can be enjoyed by your Golden Retriever as long as it is cooked and free of seasonings and spices. Many vitamins and minerals are abundant in this high-protein food. All fat must be removed because too much fat can cause an upset stomach and possible inflammation of the pancreas. Because of their high salt content, processed pork meats such as bacon, ham, and sausage should also be avoided. They can also cause choking. Potato Cooked Potatoes are a starchy vegetable high in vitamin C, vitamin B6, iron, and magnesium. Since they are a high carbohydrate food, they provide a lot of energy, so feed them in small amounts. You may mash, roast, or boil them, but no butter or salt should be added. As long as the potato is cooked and the skin is removed, you can feed it to your Golden Retriever. Be aware that solanine, a toxic compound, is found in raw or green potatoes. The cooking method, on the other hand, eliminates this risk. Pumpkin Pumpkin is a good human food to feed your Golden Retriever, and the seeds are fine as well. Pumpkin is better served cooked; it will be difficult for your Golden Retriever to digest it raw. A good idea is to replace some kibble with pumpkin. Brown whole grain rice, on the other hand, is a healthier choice, so keep that in mind when selecting a brand. Calcium, fiber, iron, vitamin D, thiamine, and riboflavin are all abundant in rice. Rice is starch, so it should be consumed in moderation. But, as long as your Retriever maintains a healthy weight, a small amount added to his meal now and then will not cause any harm. A dog with diarrhea is given plain white rice not brown that has been cooked. Salmon is an excellent fish for Golden Retrievers to eat. Salmon is a high-protein source used in many top-quality dog foods. Since raw salmon contains parasites that can cause poisoning, you should never feed it to your Golden. Sweet Potato Sweet potatoes are safe for Golden Retrievers to eat, and they are a better choice than cooked white potatoes since they are more nutritious. They are high in beta-carotene, which is beneficial for growth and vision. They also contain vitamins C, B6, E, and A and are a natural source of fiber. Before giving sweet potatoes to your dog, they should be cooked and the skin removed. They can be baked, mashed, or pureed. They are a common source of carbohydrates in high-quality dog foods due to their nutritional value. Vitamin D, B12, B6, iron, potassium, and magnesium are among the vitamins and minerals found in them. Owing to the higher mercury levels in tuna and mackerel, there is some debate over whether dogs should eat them. However, as with most human foods, I believe balance is important when feeding your Golden Retriever. A few chunks of canned tuna scattered over her food are easily devoured by my dog. Turkey Turkey is a high-protein food full of nutrients such as B vitamins, including thiamine and riboflavin. Turkey also contains selenium, which helps in metabolism regulation. Since the legs produce more fat, turkey breast is healthier. Yogurt Your Golden Retriever can eat two different types of yogurt — Greek yogurt and plain, low-fat natural yogurt are his two options. Yogurt is rich in calcium and protein, and it can also serve as a probiotic, which is beneficial for his digestive system. Check for artificial sweeteners like xylitol , added sugar and fat in the yogurt, and just feed a tablespoon or two to avoid a stomach upset. There are a few significant safety guidelines to obey while feeding human foods to your Golden Retriever: You should feed human foods in moderation to your Golden Retriever. Gradually introduce various foods. Any unfavorable side effects should be avoided as a result of this. Cook all meats — unless your Golden Retriever is used to a safely prepared raw diet. Avoid processed meats. Examples are ham, sausage, and bacon, which contain high amounts of salt or seasoning. Dairy products should not be offered to dogs that have lactose intolerance. Since dairy foods contain varying amounts of lactose, your Golden Retriever may be able to handle some — but not all of them. My dog, for example, can eat cheese and yogurt, but even a few licks of heavy whipping cream give her the runs! Cook all fish — due to the risk of bacteria. Longer-lived fish species, such as mackerel and tuna, can contain high levels of mercury, so eat them in moderation. Remove seeds and stones from fruits. Examples are nectarines, peaches, and plums. Cooked vegetables are better for digestion. However, some can be given raw such as carrots and green beans. And 8 Toxic Veg! Dogs can be poisoned by a variety of completely safe foods for humans, and poisoning episodes in dogs are usually due to a lack of knowledge by the owner. Foods that Golden Retrievers can not eat range from the more well-known such as chocolate, grapes, garlic, onion, spices, macadamia nuts, caffeine, and salt. But, dogs can not eat the less evident foodstuffs such as avocado, yeast dough, green potato, and products containing the sweetener xylitol. Some poisonings could result in severe illness or worse — depending on the amount consumed and the potency. The range of amounts is based on the activity of your Golden for the day, either low, moderate, or high level of activity. Golden Retrievers should have scheduled times to eat daily. The scheduled times will help them with their energy levels and keep them healthy. You can schedule their eating times as to what works best for your schedule. For example, feeding them before you leave for work and then when you get home. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Planning their mealtimes around your mealtimes will often make it easier for you and the puppy. Make sure to give them plenty of time after eating to got to the bathroom a couple of times before heading to bed. Hopefully, this will help them sleep for a longer period. After about six months, your Golden Retriever can go down to two daily feedings. This usually occurs once in the morning and once in the evening. They can usually last about 12 hours between meals. If it goes past 12 hours, they could become nauseated. Golden Retrievers can experience food allergies often caused from proteins in dairy or meat products. If your dog experiences symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching they may have a food allergy. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens. However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help. Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods. If you work hard to make sure your homemade foods are rich in the vitamins and minerals that a dog needs, then it might work for your Golden Retriever. It takes a lot more time to find recipes and make sure it has all the nutritional value of a store-bought dog food. If you are willing to research expertly formulated recipes internet is making it easier to do this , and take the time to cook for your golden then go for it! Consulting your veterinarian is a must before starting any homemade diet. A veterinary nutritionist should also review your plan before starting. Feeding your Golden Retriever table food is not the best practice but a small amount of dog healthy table food is fine. Some example table foods that are healthy for them are carrots, blueberries and plain yogurt. Just be aware that feeding them too much table food can throw their entire diet out of whack. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. Conclusion Making sure your Golden Retriever is getting the right foods at the right amounts will help them live their best life. There are many choices of foods with all the right ingredients. Be sure to choose one that works best for you and your Golden. Consult with your veterinarian on which food will bring the most nutritional value to the health of your Golden Retriever. If your Golden is experiencing any health issues related to changing foods, visit your veterinarian. If this article was helpful, please consider sharing this post on Facebook with the button below! Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. labrador puppy treats - Some dogs like Labradors have two layers of fur, which makes them ideal dogs for hunting waterfowl since they have an additional layer of hair to insulate them from water. Other dogs like poodles have a single layer of hair. Because their coat is dense and wiry, it does a great job of protecting them from cold temperatures. Puppies spend most of their time snuggling with their mother or with their littermates. As a result, they have little need for a dense and wiry coat. Puppies typically have hair that is soft and less dense than what you would find on an adult dog. In the case of poodles, puppies are usually born with hair that is soft and straight. As your puppy gets older, their hair will start becoming wavy or curly at the base. Your poodle will shed during the first few months of her life. Poodles are hypoallergenic dogs because they do very little shedding as adults, which means they release less pet dander than other dogs. However, poodle puppies have fast hair growth cycles. Old hair has to fall out to make room for new growth, resulting in shedding. Most dogs shed their puppy coat to make room for their adult coat around four to six months of age. However, poodle puppies tend to blow their coat later: Standard poodles usually lose their puppy coat around nine to 16 months of age. Miniature and toy poodles tend to shed their puppy coat earlier at nine months. This process is also longer than for other breeds. It can take up to three months for a Standard poodle to fully lose her puppy coat and grow her adult hair. The groomer will probably focus on hair that could get in her eyes, trim the coat around the genitals since it can become dirty, and get your puppy used to having her nails trimmed. When your poodle starts blowing her puppy coat, you can take her to the groomer again for a warm bath and de-shedding shampoo. The groomer might not need to trim a lot of hair but bathing and brushing will help with managing shedding. You should take your poodle to the groomer again once her adult coat comes in. Daily brushing with an appropriate pin bristle brush is key to preventing matting. Also, be aware that your Poodle is more likely to have this problem if it gets mud on its coat. If you have any doubts that you can get out the matting without hurting your dog, cut out the matting yourself or bring your pooch to the groomer. Pretty odd to look at! Also, keep in mind that no breed is completely hypoallergenic. However, if you notice specific other symptoms along with hair loss, your dog may have a separate underlying problem that needs veterinary attention. Worrying symptoms include:. English Saddle clip Continental clip A poodle can have any of the above hair types or some combination of them. Read on to find out more about the different types of poodle hair. Types of Poodle Hair Explained There are many types of poodle hair that you can find on poodles, and these different hairstyles are dependent on the grooming practices used as well as the age and breeding stock that the dog comes from. This hair type starts out as super soft, thin, wispy, and straight, but begins to grow curly and denser around the base as the pup grows older. Curly Coat Once a poodle transitions out of its puppy coat, it develops a thick curly hair type that covers the entire dog from head to toe. This coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic; while poodles are well-known for their lack of shedding, this also means that their curly coat needs constant maintenance to avoid matting. Corded Coat Another hair type seen less commonly in poodles but commonly seen in other water dogs, such as the Portuguese water dog , is the corded coat. Improper Coat Unfortunately, due to a lack of careful selection during breeding, many poodles that are kept as companion animals rather than show dogs exhibit an improper coat, at least with regard to the breed standard. Improper coats are not curly throughout and will often exhibit soft waves in patches or across the entire dog. Improper coats are easier to brush, but a fault in the show. This kind of hairstyle is practical for pet poodles but is also the only cut permissible in a competitive show for any poodle under twelve months of age. English Saddle Clip An English saddle clip on a poodle is what most people think of when they imagine a fancy cartoon poodle—legs, tail, and chest cut into elaborate pom-poms, with shaved sections in between each ball of hair. This hairstyle was much more popular in the mid-twentieth century than it is today when puppy clips are more popular outside of dog shows. The clip has also lost popularity in dog shows, as it is not flattering to many dogs and is said to disguise the lines of the dog, making it a less attractive choice during judging. The English saddle clip is generally considered to be a poor choice for soft-coated dogs. Continental Clip A Continental clip is a similar hairstyle on a poodle to an English saddle clip, with the major difference being how the rear legs and back are cut. In an English saddle clip, the rear legs are cut into a series of pom-poms, whereas in the Continental clip, these sections are shaved. A Continental clip, like an English saddle clip, can be very difficult to maintain. Check out this article I recently wrote on 25 haircuts for poodles. Poodles and Hypoallergenic Hair One of the major advantages of poodles is that their hair is hypoallergenic, which means that it does not tend to cause problems for most people who have dog allergies. This makes poodles a good pet choice for anyone who wants a dog but is susceptible to the sniffles and leaky eyes around them. If you are on a budget, it may be more economical to purchase an allergy kit from Amazon. My favorite is the 5Strands deluxe tester. With this test kit, you can easily test for any pet-related allergies you may have. Check it out here on Amazon for more information and current pricing. While many dogs such as golden retrievers have a double coat, which is comprised of a soft undercoat that is protected by an outer layer of guard hairs, poodles only have a single coat. The biggest difference between the two coat types is that single-coated dogs do not shed and are considered hypoallergenic. Double-coated dogs tend to shed throughout the season and are a bane for those with allergies since their shedding also results in a lot of lost dander that tends to cause allergies to act up. Does Poodle Hair Stop Growing? In most cases, this is a very undesirable outcome. This coat type can be seen in other water dogs, too, such as the Portuguese water dog. But to make sure that the cords are presentable for exhibition, groomers will train them for a uniform appearance. Problems with Poodle Hair Despite the fact that it is hypoallergenic and lovely to look at, poodle hair comes with its own particular set of grooming and health problems. The hair of poodles has a tendency to thin and fall out, especially in female dogs that are going through heat or other hormonal surges. Here are some other common issues with poodle hair: Alopecia X: This is a balding condition caused by growth hormone deficiencies during the transition to adulthood in poodles and can cause loss of hair along both sides of the body. Luckily this is strictly a cosmetic issue for poodles generally caused by poor breeding practices and does not cause any other health problems. Allergies: Like many purebred dogs that have enjoyed an immense amount of popularity, some poodle breeding lines have developed a series of allergies to things like food and shampoos that affect the skin, eyes, and hair. Excessive itchiness can cause a poodle to scratch its own hair out eventually, and even form sores and hot spots. Sebaceous Adenitis: Like alopecia X, this is a hereditary disease of poodles and other breeds that are caused by poor breeding practices. Neutering is the recommended treatment or spaying, as the condition can show up in females too. The main cause of matting on a poodle is not brushing a poodle correctly or often enough. The cure for matting is to work the mat out with a proper grooming tool and brush the dog properly or more often going forward to avoid the formation of new mats. Matting can become severe if not addressed early on, and if matting becomes too serious, the only option is to cut the mass of hair off the poodle entirely or shave it down to the skin in the area where the mat is located. Obviously, for show coats, this can be extremely detrimental. The best preventative to avoid mats is to set up a strict and regular grooming schedule for your poodle. As long as a poodle is brushed regularly, their coats are not that much more difficult to manage than many other breeds of dog. Once a puppy is used to the process of being brushed, it will be much easier to train the poodle to stand still, and the process of brushing becomes a much quicker and more enjoyable process. The easiest way to regularly brush a poodle is to train it to stand and stay on a table. Training dogs to give a paw readily can be helpful for simplifying this process, as many dogs are naturally reluctant to let anyone handle their feet. Teaching the poodle to respond to simple positioning commands can be very useful in accomplishing this. The more careful you are in grooming the dog, the more trust you will build up and the less reluctant the dog will be to get brushed. As you work, spray each section with a conditioning spray to reduce potential tangles. Note: This is especially important on darker-colored poodles, such as black or chocolate poodles, since fleas and ticks will not show up as readily against their hair as in lighter-colored dogs. Be sure to talk calmly to the poodle throughout this process and offer treats when they are behaving correctly, as this will encourage good behavior in the future. Once the coat is brushed out, the poodle can then be bathed. If you own a poodle pup, you may encounter some special challenges when it comes to grooming. Home Grooming vs. Professional Grooming Many people are intimidated by the grooming of poodles and assume that to keep a poodle looking good, they have to be professionally groomed much more often than the average dog. The downside is that it takes a bit of practice grooming a poodle in order to do it well. Since a poodle is years of commitment and professional grooming can cost thousands of dollars over the course of its life, it can be a financial good investment to learn how to groom your poodle early on. Plus, it also acts as a good bonding activity. Bathing Poodle Hair In order to maintain a good coat condition, poodles should ideally be bathed approximately once every three weeks. Too much bathing can also irritate the skin or make existing skin irritations worse. I recently wrote this article on how to properly give your poodle a bath. Puppy cuts are not just for poodle puppies, they for adults too. And in fact, this is one of the most popular types of cut that adult poodles get. The typical puppy cut is one that leaves your poodle with an even length all over her body. Sometimes the hair around the ears is styled independently depending on your aesthetic preferences. The overall body length is usually inches. Puppy cuts are a favorite choice for many owners due to the benefit of reduced maintenance. By keeping her coat trimmed you give yourself an easier time with brushing. The chances of matting and tangling become less with a trimmed coat. When it comes to brushing, little and often should be your mantra. Little and often is key here and this will keep on top of matting and tangling much more effectively compared to infrequent but long sessions. If you were to give your poodle puppy 10 minutes of brushing every day, she will remain tangle-free without getting irritated by the brush. The best brush to use would be a pin and bristle brush. The pin side of the brush works well to gently pull out and de-tangle hair. If certain tangles become too tightly matted together, the only option is to cut it off. This is not something that should be done all the time. And brushing is the key to preventing tangles in the first place. But other than that, the earlier you start, the more familiar your poodle will be with the brush for when she really needs it. Matting happens to puppies as well as adults so brushing will be necessary as soon as her wavey puppy curls start growing to significant lengths. Some other owners prefer waiting until around months, but always try to give her a cut before the transition to her adult coat starts. This is due to her immune system being weak and vulnerable to catching illnesses while wet. This should bring you to around the 4 months mark which at that point, she will be ready to have her first bath. Thanks for reading! When will my Poodle puppy need haircuts? Then, at around four months old, they will shed their puppy coats and start to grow out their rougher adult coats. Frequency As a general rule, Poodles should have their coats clipped every weeks once their adult coats grow out, whatever your desired length. This is because they grow so quickly and can become matted just as fast! What equipment should I use? There are three main types of dog grooming scissors; straight scissors, curved scissors, and thinning shears, and they all perform slightly differently. Straight grooming scissors are a multi-task tool, they have straight blades for general, basic grooming, creating straight lines in the coat, and adding the finishing touches to haircuts. Curved dog grooming shear has a curved blade that can be used to fine-tune and shape specific areas of the coat, such as the paws and hindquarters. Thinning shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other, and there are also double thinners that have teeth on both blades. They are designed to remove lots of hair in even sections for a natural finish, and they can also be used to blend out the harsh lines from clippers and texturize the coat. Or, if you just need something for the occasional touch-up between visits to the groomer, a simple pair of electrical motor clippers will do just fine. Electric motor clippers are also good for keeping short coats short. You should also be aware of the types of blades that come with clippers. The higher the number of the blade, the more hair that it will remove. Or, you can get guards that fit a single blade to customize the length, which is a lot more convenient. Start by showing them the equipment and getting them used to the sight and sound of it before you cut any hair. Reward them just for being around it and then try cutting a small section of hair. If they react well, reward them again, and then do another section. Keep rewarding them as you go and again after the haircut is finished. Do it in a well-lit, comfortable part of the home that your pup can stand up in. Once you get them into a routine — keep it up! Work your way down the legs first, then from the neck to the hindquarters, or vice versa, and then the tail. Take care with the feet, underside, and head, shielding their eyes from falling fur. Use long strokes and go from the neck down to the back legs. How to deal with grooming anxiety If your pup is afraid of the scissors or clippers, take it really slowly and try to make it an enjoyable experience. You can do this by breaking up the haircut into smaller sessions to make it less stressful and taking breaks in between each one. Give your dog lots of praise and a reward every time you take a break and ask another family member to comfort them during the haircut. You can start brushing your Poodle from any age. To brush them, simply go in the direction of hair growth using short strokes. Hold the fur at the base with your free hand to remove knots, and use a mat remover for any stubborn mats. Bathing a Poodle puppy As for bathing, you should give your Poodle pup their first proper bath at months old to help them shed their puppy coat, unless they get seriously dirty before that. However, you can give your pup a bath any time after weeks of age to get them used to the sensation, but avoid overbathing them, as this will strip the fur of its natural oils and make it dry and brittle. Once they have their adult coats, your Poodle pup will need a bath once a month. You can even buy shampoo that is designed especially for Poodle coats. To give your Poodle a bath, lather up their wet fur with the shampoo, massage it in, leave it for as long as directed on the bottle, and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with conditioner if necessary.
