The link has been copied! What do you get when you mix the two smartest dog breeds in the world together? You get an incredibly adorable ball of fluff called the Bordoodle. Or, if you want to get more technical about it, it could be called the Border Collie Poodle mix. These two breeds top the list of intelligent dog breeds and their looks are a winning combination. Interested in bringing a Bordoodle home? In his quest, he crossed the hypoallergenic Poodle with the super smart and trainable Labrador Retriever to end up with the Labradoodle. Through a marketing gimmick, he popularized the funky name and the whole Doodle craze took off from there. Now, breeders have created a whole line of designer breeds including the Goldendoodle, the Shepadoodle, the Cavapoo, the Bernoodle, and even some interesting combos like the Boxerdoodle. And, of course, the Bordoodle is one of them. However, studying the parent breeds gives you an idea of what to expect. Border Collie The Border Collie was developed on the border between England and Scotland, which is how it got its name. The breed was descended from the Viking Spitz-type herding dogs mixed with the old Roman herding dogs. As you might guess, these dogs were developed with a job in mind, herding sheep. This requires lots of energy and smarts to keep those sheep in line with minimal direction from the shepherd. The official Border Collie breed developed mostly from one dog in the s. Old Hemp, a sheepdog with the aforementioned heritage became known for his obedient and intelligent nature. All the shepherds wanted a dog just like him and people began bringing their dogs to breed with him. All in all, Old Hemp fathered around puppies and that was the basis for the breed as we know it today. Now the Border Collie is known for its incredible smarts, boundless energy, and loyal and obedient nature. Originally developed in Germany, their tightly curled mop of hair served a purpose for their job. Their thick hair served to protect them from the cold. From Germany, they traveled to France where people fell in love with the fluffy little pups. The aristocracy began breeding them smaller to be more manageable as house pets. Nowadays, there are three officially recognized Poodle sizes four if you ask the Europeans. French Poodle and German Poodle clubs throw a fourth category in there between the Miniature Poodle and the Standard called Moyen or Klein respectively. Plus, because of the size variations of the Poodle, Bordoodles can come in various sizes as well. However, the most common cross is with a Standard Poodle. This yields a dog between about 16 - 22 inches tall and weighing between 35 - 65 pounds. Some breeders will also mix the Border Collie with the Miniature Poodle to create a more pint-sized package. As far as looks, they tend to have athletic builds — both their parents are energetic athletes after all! They usually have thick, curly or wavy hair and are typically black and white like the Border Collie, though not always. Some Bordoodles inherit the interesting heterochromia trait from their Border Collie parent, which means they have two different colored eyes. For example, they may have one blue eye and one brown one. If not, the Bordoodle usually has dark brown eyes. You would be forgiven for this mistake as they look quite similar. They are loving, energetic, super smart, and loyal. Bordoodles adore their families and will happily play with small children for hours on end. Give them a job to do, and they are content to perform that as well. Though they still need training like any dog, their willingness to please makes the task much easier. If you want a dog that you can teach a bunch of cool tricks, the Bordoodle is a great choice! They can tend to be a little standoffish with strangers, but as long as they are properly socialized as pups, they are not aggressive. And eventually, their Poodle side kicks in and they become a little more friendly. Both the Border Collie and the Poodle are energetic dogs. Their intelligence also requires plenty of mental stimulation. If they get bored, they may find other ways of entertaining themselves — which usually spells disaster for your furniture. They will have medium-length hair that is wavy or loosely curled. They usually end up black and white, taking after the coat color and pattern of the Border Collie. However, the Poodle contributes a variety of other colors as well. You can find Bordoodles in brown, silver, cream, red, white, black, apricot, and any combination of these colors. They can live in apartments or houses with small yards as long as they are given the opportunity for at least 90 minutes of exercise daily. They enjoy spending time with their families and are overjoyed when you want to play or teach them a new trick. But ideally, Bordoodles love a house with a yard. They love the opportunity to romp around, playing and entertaining themselves with the sights and sounds of the outdoors. Bordoodles are fantastic with little kids and you can count on them to help wear each other out. However, if your Bordoodle starts getting bored, he may try to herd kids or other pets, which can be annoying for the other animals or intimidating to small kids. This, plus his willingness to please helps make training a breeze. But it still takes work. Along with all the regular manners and commands, Bordoodles require lots of early socialization. They are naturally suspicious of strangers and can become overly shy or overprotective if not accustomed to guests entering the home. Make sure you introduce him to both humans and dogs early on — both by having them come over as well as going out for walks or to the dog park. The Bordoodle requires a significant amount of grooming to keep his medium-length hair tidy and tangle-free. To make the experience more pleasant for both of you, be sure to introduce him to grooming early on and accompany it with treats and other pleasantries. The Health of the Bordoodle In general, hybrid dog breeds tend to be relatively healthy. By mixing the gene pools, there is less risk of dogs inheriting the typical health issues of their breed. However, though the likelihood may be lower, designer dog breeds are at risk of inheriting common health problems of either parent breed. In the case of the Bordoodle, both parent breeds can suffer from hip dysplasia and eye conditions. Most commonly, they are affected by collie eye, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts. Without treatment, loss of eyesight can follow. Each individual is different, though. Plus, regular trips to the vet, vaccinations, and other routine care will help keep the Bordoodle healthy. A well-cared-for Bordoodle can easily live a long life of about 11 to 16 years. Bordoodles as Family Pets Bordoodles are excellent as family pets. They get along well with small children and will happily play with them for hours. They may try to herd them once in a while, but as long as you correct this behavior early and firmly, they will learn it is not tolerated. They need about 45 minutes of vigorous exercise each day and plenty of mental stimulation. With various people in the house for them to play with, they usually get enough but it can be hard to keep up with a Bordoodle if you live alone. Though energetic, he can be calm and just enjoy being with you. Mixing it with other dog breeds has produced some interesting and beautiful results. Is the Bordoodle Right for Me? Bordoodles come in a range of coat colors and patterns, usually incorporating a mix of black, white, gray and brown. Brushing your dog one or two times a week should suffice. These dogs are extremely smart, but that intelligence can sometimes manifest itself in destructive behavior if the dog is left alone or not properly trained. Children and Bordoodles are a great mix. A couple of walks every day, totaling around 45 minutes, should do the trick to keep the dog happy and healthy. But if you take a look at the history of their parent breeds, you can start to understand where the Bordoodle comes from. The Poodle breed can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt times. After that, the dog became popular in France as a duck hunting dog. The Bordoodle has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Bordoodle Size The Bordoodle is usually described as a medium-sized dog. Although, as is always the case with newer dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 30 to 60 pounds and range in height from twelve to 22 inches. This is true. The mixed breed usually gets along great with families and will love to become a part of daily activities and routines. Just be warned that this same intelligence can sometimes manifest itself in destructive behavior if the dog is left alone or not properly trained. So make sure to let the Bordoodle become a central part of your family and enjoy a great dog! Also be aware that the Bordoodle will quickly become protective towards the family that adopts them. While the mixed breed might not look like a classic guard dog, they will prove wary of strangers. Bordoodle Health Bordoodles are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the mixed breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Border Collie and Poodle face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. The Bordoodle is a dog with medium energy and exercise needs. Consult your regular vet if you need advice on how best to carry out canine teeth cleanings. Make sure to check their ears for debris or pests and clean them as recommended by your vet. Bordoodle Feeding An ideal Bordoodle diet should be formulated for a medium breed with medium energy. Shedding is on the lower side of things—brushing the dog one or two times a week should suffice. In general, the Bordoodle is an adaptable dog when it comes to climate. Also, during hotter months, make sure shade and fresh water are always available during outdoor play and activity sessions. Bordoodle Children And Other Pets Children and Bordoodles are a great mix—just be sure to follow the usual guidelines of ensuring proper socialization and training takes place at an early age for both kids and dogs. When it comes to existing household pets, the breed is usually fine. But always supervise those first interactions and make sure that boundaries are set if necessary. Ultimately, early socialization really pays off with this breed. Make sure to reward your Bordoodle for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regime when you bring them home to your family. Bordoodle Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Bordoodles because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Border Collie or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Breeding the Poodle to a Border Collie greatly reduces or can even eliminate shedding. The Border Collie — Poodle cross is a great choice for people who enjoy the attributes and intelligence of a Border Collie and want a non-shedding coat. Any way you name it, the dogs are highly intelligent and great looking too! Growing up, Border Collies were my breed of choice, and they were amazing, but the shedding and over the top drive to work all day every day was more than I can handle in my current lifestyle. See Available and upcoming litters here! The short answer is: smart. This medium-sized , relatively new crossbreed mixes the border collie with the poodle , thus combining two of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world into one super cute, family-friendly package. Because she's such a new mix, potential pet parents should keep in mind that there's not much breed consistency, so everything from your bordoodle's size and behavior to health and coat texture can vary depending on how much the puppy is influenced by her parents' genes. But it's safe to assume this hybrid will be bright, athletic, and affectionate, although her size can differ dramatically based on whether the poodle parent is a standard or miniature poodle , which may be used by some breeders to attempt to breed a mini bordoodle. They're likely to be fairly energetic, though the poodle genes might tamp down some of that famous—or infamous—border collie intensity. Still, families bringing home a bordoodle should be prepared to provide consistent daily activity, some level of grooming, and a whole lot of devotion. Appearance While cuteness is pretty much guaranteed, the bordoodle's coat and overall appearance is full of uncertainties. Even within one litter, you may find a variety of coat types stretching from wavy to curly, incorporating nearly all colors, and with shedding levels ranging from high to non-shedding. The dog's size will depend heavily on the size of her poodle parent because standard poodles and miniature poodles offer such an enormous size range. But, typically, bordoodles will be medium-sized pups. The product of a purebred border collie and a purebred poodle is considered an F1 bordoodle , which typically has a wavy or slightly curly coat and sheds lightly. When an F1 bordoodle is bred to either a purebred border collie or a purebred poodle, it's considered an F1b bordoodle the b stands for "back" to the parent breed ; in this case, breeding them back to a purebred poodle is usually the chosen path because that leads to a more consistent dog with a wavy or curly coat. A bordoodle's eyes are generally brown, but you'll occasionally find one with one brown eye and one that's blue. Temperament How's your ego? If it can handle the idea of a dog who might be smarter than you, you're in luck with the bordoodle. Both border collies and poodles have a reputation for being whip smart, and that makes them highly trainable —for the right family. However, the border collie side of her can be rather aloof with strangers, so you'll need to work with your pup to teach her that it's OK to warm up to new people, too. Pet parents should be aware that, although both border collies and poodles can have a lot of energy, they have completely different work ethics. Poodles tend to be more playful. They like to work, but they also like to rest or just have fun," Askeland says. You might have one that has a big work ethic, or they could have less need for stimulation or a job. It's not that she's trying to be naughty, of course; she just might not understand what to do with her pent-up energy. Living Needs In case it's not yet clear, this crossbreed can be an excellent choice for families—especially those who are willing to incorporate their bordoodle into their daily lives, whether that includes car rides , hiking trips , or other dog-friendly activities. Living in an apartment probably isn't ideal for her, but if you're committed to including your pup in your routine and giving her fun activities to do each day, it may be possible. Of course, because the bordoodle is a new mix breed and her temperament isn't entirely predictable, her ability to be happy in a small home with no yard depends a great deal on which parent breed she takes after—a poodle is no problem, but the border collie in her could be a challenge in that environment. But either way, she's unlikely to be a total couch potato. Some walking , maybe some running , playing fetch and Frisbee , and then, of course, a little training and obedience along the way. Another way to keep the bordoodle's paws and minds moving, Askeland says, is by teaching them new tricks. And that must not be tolerated with children—or other pets, for that matter, although these dogs tend to be good with other animals including cats! Getting her involved in something like lure chasing, where she can chase safely, is an option. But if you don't have a mechanical lure chasing set up near you, herding behaviors may be something you want to teach her to avoid entirely. Care Grooming needs will vary from dog to dog because the bordoodle's coat can be furry like a border collie's or more like a poodle's curly hair. But it's a safe bet she'll need her coat brushed at least a couple of times a week. And if she's more in the border collie coat camp, brushing and the occasional bath as needed, may be all the grooming she requires—although the downside is she's more likely to shed. If her coat takes after her poodle parentage, shedding is likely to be low , but regular and professional grooming may be required to keep that fur from matting. Keep an eye and ear on her nails; if you can hear them tapping on the floor, it's time to trim them. And those cute, floppy ears may need a little help staying clean, so check those regularly , too. Courtesy of rosie. The bordoodle shouldn't have her border collie parent's insatiable drive to work nonstop, so a couple of nice walks each day should suffice—especially if you pair that with some fun brain games, like training her to do tricks using positive reinforcement. That being said, if you live a more active life, she may make for an engaging running or biking partner , so don't hesitate to bring her along. Early socialization, along with training, will help ensure the friendly, curious nature of your bordoodle is first and foremost and that any aloof or wary tendencies don't take over. Health Just as temperament and appearance can vary greatly with a recently created mix like a bordoodle, so can the potential inherited health issues. Still, there are some things she suggests discussing with your breeder and veterinarian. Depending on the size and shape of the dog you end up with, bloat also known as gastric dilation volvulus may be an issue, as it's seen commonly in deep-chested standard poodles. Brown-Bury suggests chatting with your vet about whether a prophylactic gastropexy procedure might be a good idea. Addison's disease is also something seen more in poodles than other breeds, so it's wise for poodle mix owners to be familiar with warning signs and symptoms. And, because this is likely to be an athletic pooch, she recommends staying on top of any injury. Hip dysplasia may also be a concern, but Brown-Bury notes that, although it is genetic, it's not a simple inheritance because there are multiple genes that impact it. As is the case with most designer mixes, it's likely that border collies and poodles have been unintentionally mixing for ages, but it's only been in recent years that breeders have begun working to standardize the bordoodle. And no wonder! This mix of two wildly intelligent, fun, and friendly breeds has real appeal, and the bordoodle is currently recognized albeit as the "borpoodle" by the American Canine Hybrid Club , the Designer Breed Registry , the Designer Dogs Kennel Club , the Dog Registry of America , and the International Designer Canine Registry. Still, when considering this crossbreed—or any dog that's being sold as a designer mix by a breeder— make sure to thoroughly research any bordoodle breeder due to the prevalence of puppy mills in the designer dog market. This might not be a purebred dog, Brown-Bury says, but, "the usual recommendations apply. If at all possible, meet the parent dogs, see where they are housed, where the puppies will spend the first few weeks of their lives. Keep an eye out for these red flags to ensure you don't fall for a puppy mill scheme : There are multiple mixed breeds for sale from the same breeder. The website offers wait times for puppies. The breeder offers to ship puppies. It's difficult to identify breeder contact information no phone number, contact email, etc. Fun Facts Bordoodles can inherit heterochromia, where one eye is blue and the other is brown, from their border collie parent. This has absolutely no bearing on her eye health, although it sure makes her look cool. It's easy to mistake a bordoodle for an Aussiedoodle , which is a poodle mixed with an Australian shepherd. And that's understandable, as border collies and Australian shepherds look a great deal alike! Bordoodles are also sometimes called borderdoodles, borpoos, or borderpoos. It's up to you whether you prefer the doodle or the poo suffix. Add a little more cuteness to your timeline by following bordoodles including Rosie , Molly and Dougal , and Griffey on Instagram. I remember when we first got him, his color was black. You said he would likely lighten up. Here's what he looks like now. They are a crossbreed between the Border Collie and the Poodle, combining the intelligence and herding abilities of the Border Collie with the hypoallergenic coat and charming personality of the Poodle. The exact origin of Bordoodles is still being determined, as with most designer dog breeds. They are believed to have been first intentionally bred in the late 20th century, primarily in Australia and the United States. Breeders aimed to create a dog with the desirable traits of both parent breeds, such as intelligence, trainability, athleticism, and a low-shedding coat. Bordoodle Generations Over time, different generations of Bordoodles have been developed, each with its own set of characteristics and traits. Since both parent breeds are distinctly different, the puppies from this cross exhibit a wide range of traits in appearance and temperament. They may inherit more characteristics from one parent breed over the other or display a balanced blend of features from both breeds. Breeders often backcross with a Poodle to increase hypoallergenic qualities and reinforce herding abilities. F1b Bordoodles tend to have higher predictability of traits compared to F1 Bordoodles. There is a greater chance for traits to stabilize and become more consistent. F2 Bordoodles can still display variations in appearance and temperament due to genetic recombination. Some dogs may resemble one parent more strongly, while others may show a balanced mix of traits. This generation is often sought after for its potential to produce puppies with a more predictable set of traits. By introducing another backcross, breeders aim to refine specific qualities in the offspring, such as coat texture, size, or temperament. Multigenerational Bordoodle A multigenerational Bordoodle refers to a dog that is the result of breeding two or more generations of Bordoodles. Breeding multigenerational Bordoodles aims to establish a more consistent breed standard while retaining the desired traits from the parent breeds. What Does a Bordoodle Look Like? These dogs are highly trainable, diligent, and thrive when given tasks to perform. They are known for their loyalty and strong bonds with their families. However, supervision is always recommended to ensure both the dog and children interact positively and safely. Are they good with other pets? Bordoodles can generally be good with other pets, especially if they are socialized and introduced to them at an early age. Hip Dysplasia: This is a common health issue in many large and medium-sized breeds, including Border Collies and Poodles. It occurs when the hip joint does not develop properly, leading to discomfort and potentially causing arthritis. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding excessive jumping or strenuous activities can help prevent or minimize the impact of hip dysplasia. Consult your veterinarian for further advice; surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : PRA is an inherited eye condition that leads to the gradual degeneration of the retina, ultimately resulting in blindness. Regular eye check-ups by a veterinarian can help detect early signs of PRA. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures. While the exact cause is often unknown, it can sometimes be inherited. If your Bordoodle exhibits seizures, consult with a veterinarian who can help diagnose and manage the condition. Allergies: Both Border Collies and Poodles are known to have allergies, and Bordoodles may inherit this predisposition. Allergies can manifest as skin irritations, itching, ear infections, and gastrointestinal issues. Identifying and avoiding allergens, such as certain foods or environmental triggers, can help manage allergies. Your veterinarian may recommend a special diet, medication, or other interventions to alleviate symptoms. On average, Bordoodles have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, individual dogs may vary, and factors such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle can influence their lifespan. Providing proper nutrition, regular exercise, routine veterinary care, and a loving environment can contribute to a longer and healthier life for your Bordoodle. How much exercise does a Bordoodle need? Bordoodles typically benefit from at least one hour of exercise per day. This can include activities such as brisk walks, jogging, playing fetch, and engaging in interactive games or training sessions. Fortunately, the Bordoodle is highly adaptable to apartment living, which means you need not worry even if you reside in an urban area with limited access to extensive outdoor spaces. Since Bordoodles have a herding background from the Border Collie parent, mental stimulation is also important for their overall well-being. Puzzle toys, obedience training, and agility exercises can help meet their intellectual needs. How often should you groom a Border Doodle? Bordoodle has a low-shedding coat that requires regular brushing to prevent matting and keep it looking its best. Aim to brush their coat at least two to three times a week, using a slicker brush or a comb to remove any tangles or loose hair. Additionally, regular bathing is recommended every six to eight weeks or as needed, using a mild dog shampoo to keep their coat clean and healthy. Pay attention to their ears, teeth, and nails as well, ensuring they are clean, free of wax buildup, and properly trimmed. What should I feed my Bordoodle? Bordoodle requires a high-quality, balanced diet specifically formulated for active and medium-sized breeds. Look for dog foods that list real meat or fish as the primary ingredient, without fillers or artificial additives. The portion size will depend on factors such as age, weight, and activity level. How Much Does a Bordoodle Cost? Remember that the initial cost of acquiring a puppy is just one aspect of pet ownership. There are additional expenses to consider, including veterinary care, vaccinations, grooming, food, training, and general supplies. However, we met one of your older dogs at a restaurant last year, asked the owner about him, and immediately began researching Oregon Bordoodles. She is the most personable, intelligent dog I have ever owned. When we started looking into getting a Bordoodle we were fortunate to find Danielle, who answered all our many questions and worked closely with us throughout the process of picking a puppy and finally bringing our baby home. He is a spunky, energetic, loving dog. He loves to play and he is very brilliant. He can learn tricks in 10 minutes and will remember them forever. All of our lives have changed with his presence, but we would not trade him for any dog! It has been pure ease and love on every step of our journey. Lassie Grace is a love, with over the top energy and enthusiasm for life, hikes miles easily, with daily mile walks. Strong, muscular, guardian of her domain, still very puppy with ongoing training as she matures, never met a stranger human or canine , shining star at the vet and groomer they all love her disposition and they send me compliment notes on the joy she brings into their work space. She is high test energy yet mellows and melts right into you for love, confidently submissive, a total kid dog. The puppies were happy and at play in their warm and loving farm environment. We picked our female, red merle pup and named her Daisy. Danielle has provided us with excellent technical and emotional support as Daisy has grown. We love our year and half year old Bordoodle. Daisy is extremely cheerful, freindly and smart. She enjoys all ages of people, especially children. She is low shedding and rarely barks. As a very active dog, she requires consistent and lively exercise and play. Daisy is a great addition to our family and we love her dearly! Are you wondering what a "Bordoodle" is? Bordoodles are extremely intelligent, friendly and eager to please. They get along well with other dogs and children and are very easy to train. Bordoodles are often referred to as a "designer breed" or "Poodle Hybrid" which is not, technically, true, as all dogs are the same species. Life Span Did You Know? The Bordoodle is a designer dog breed. They are a cross between a Border Collie and a Poodle. Although a hybrid breed can take on any combination of characteristics of one or both of the parent breeds, the Bordoodle tends to be a friendly, affectionate, and loyal family dog. The Bordoodle is a playful, loving, and affectionate family dog. They get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They can be protective and initially wary of strangers, but do not tend to be aggressive as long as they have been properly socialized. As with any dog breed, poor socialization or training can result in poor behavior including fear-based aggression. But, these dogs generally have a lively, social, and friendly disposition. Although the Bordoodle tends to have a lot of energy, they can adapt well to just about any living situation. They will do well in large homes with room to roam as well as apartments as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. They also do well in most climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Bordoodles bond closely with their families, they thrive on attention and affection. This, paired with the fact that they are easily bored, means they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed breed can inherit the potential health concerns of one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. For the Bordoodle, potential health concerns to be aware of include allergies, epilepsy , hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to ensure preventable issues are not being passed on to puppies. Bordoodles tend to be highly intelligent. Although they are eager to please and tend to pick up on things quickly, they are also easily bored. This can pose a challenge for some first-time dog owners. But, overall, the Bordoodle tends to be highly trainable and a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They are eager to learn and respond best to positive methods focused on praise and rewards. Puppy training classes are always an option and are a great way to socialize a puppy too. When it comes to coat care, the Border Collie is lower maintenance than the Poodle even though they shed more. You need to be prepared for either type of coat or anything in between with your Bordoodle. The Poodle coat may be low-shedding, but it requires daily brushing and almost monthly grooming in order to stay healthy. The Border Collie coat sheds moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a Border Collie is on a weekly basis and bathing is as needed. Weekly ear checks with careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. The Bordoodle can range from moderate to high energy. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run should be sufficient to keep this dog happy and healthy. Trips to the dog park, playing frisbee, hiking, running, swimming with your dog , and more can all be great activities for you and your Bordoodle to do together. A fully-grown Bordoodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Bordoodle generally lives years. Bordoodle Puppies for Sale.

These dogs are highly desirable for their exotic appearance and for their ability to produce many other rare and exotic colors. Lilac French bulldog : This lilac color is so unique and very attractive. This color occurs when a dog that either is or carrier both blue and chocolate coco is bred with a dog with similar DNA. Not only that but they will also carry two copies of the dd as the diluting agent to turn this "rojo" chocolate into the lighter "Isabella" color. The Rojo variety, which is an isabella dog that has bb but not dd or diluted will be a dark rich chocolate color. The most recognized Isabella variety is an isabella dog that has both bb and dd making it the typical, most recognized light champagne Isabella color. Finally the last is called the New Shade Isabella french bulldog or true lilac isabella. This dog looks very much like a typical isabella but carries all the diluted genes including testable chocolate bb , cocoa coco and blue or dilute dd. Fluffy French bulldogs: Fluffy french bulldog puppies are the most expensive and most amazing frenchies in the world. They are all the rage currently due to their highly exotic appearance and fancy, luxurious, fluffy coats. These long haired frenchies are identical to a standard short hair frenchie with one very obvious difference. These babies will get fluffier as they mature and will be head turners for sure! As far as the french bulldog breed is concerned, the most prevalent genes that offer this exotic look are the L1 and L4 long-haired genes. The dog must possess 2 copies of each or mixed and will produce the same results. Pied French bulldogs: Pied french bulldogs are not exactly a color but rather a color pattern. These dogs may be of any color and hair type. These dogs are typically mostly white with another base color such as blue, chocolate, lilac, isabella, merle or fluffy. Many dislike the pied look while others request them specifically. The pied look can sometimes give french bulldogs a flashy look and is a matter of preference. Big Rope French bulldogs: Big Rope french bulldogs or "Big-Rope Frenchies" are very unique looking french bulldogs with a distinct physical difference. The overall body and appearance between a standard french bulldog and a real Big-Rope french bulldog are practically identical. The only difference is that the Big-Rope frenchie has a beautiful thick, heavy "rope" over its nose. This gives them a very bold and impressive appearance that makes them very attractive and desirable. Since the "big-rope" trait is not specific to any color, then come in every french bulldog imaginable including big rope isabella frenchies. Share Tweet The inability to produce normal stools is one of the most painful conditions that may happen to a dog. So, if you want to know why is your French bulldog constipated, read on and discover the reasons. Obstipation in Frenchies can be caused by many reasons, and here are the most common. Is your French bulldog constipated? Other, more severe symptoms include the condition called tenesmus. Your dog will strain to defecate, and will even show traces of blood and go through severe pains. When we talk about the most common causes of constipation in dogs, veterinarians set them in three categories. However, if it occurs daily, then you should check for the following reasons: Lack of exercise Even though Frenchies are not considered for highly active dogs, they need to get a daily amount of exercise. To maintain a healthy weight and improve digestion, you should walk your dog for approximately min a day. As we all know, physical activity plays an important role in maintaining a healthy metabolism. They belong to companion breeds so spending time alone can cause them to go through severe anxiety. Constipation can be one of the symptoms, as well as chewing and licking body parts, howling, loss of appetite, etc. Inappropriate diet If your dog daily struggles with constipation, our advice is to check for his diet. Dry kibble that is rich in grains and calcium can be one of the causes. Therefore, try to switch him to a fiber-rich diet. You can also prepare the meal for your pet by yourself. Instead, you can cook the pumpkin, chicken breast meat, and carrots for your Frenchie. Other triggers that can cause French bulldog constipation are: dehydration. For very mild incidents, and when waiting for the vet consultation, there are a couple of constipation management suggestions you can attempt: Plenty of water: Please ensure that your Frenchie has access to clean water. Constipation conditions can be improved if you ensure your French Bulldog gets sufficient water. You will find that providing wet food instead of dry food will also help. A daily feeding schedule 2 to 3 meals a day may benefit. Particularly, the amount of fiber in the food can impact constipation; therefore, having the right amount should help improve intestine motility and minimize constipation. Feeding too much or too little fiber can exacerbate constipation, so talk to your veterinarian, and they should be able to provide adequate diet recommendations. Avoid These When Your Frencie Is Constipated There is indeed a lot of misleading advice online regarding natural treatments for dog consti p ation. It is important to remember that you must always speak to your veterinarian before offering any remedy to your Frenchie. Enemas: Enemas must only be delivered by a veterinarian and therefore should not be given at home. The chance of harm or even contamination is significant, so professionals need to manage this procedure. Milk: Since so many dogs are lactose-intolerant, certain people say that dairy is a successful home cure for constipation by functioning as a laxative. Even milk can lead to diarrhea and is not recommended, as it can cause more health issues on its own. Laxatives: Your vet should be the only person to prescribe laxatives or stool softeners. If the constipation of your Frenchie is not resolved, then obstipation — the inability to expel the colon on their own may happen. In this situation, the bowel becomes filled with an unbearably large volume of feces. Without medical treatment, your Frenchie may suffer from this more serious type of condition and typically progress to the point that the following symptoms become visible: Lack of appetite. No comments Has your little buddy been having a hard time going to the bathroom? Of course, be sure to take your furry friend to the vet if constipation lasts longer than a few days at a time. However, here are some healthy habits to stop it from happening again. The main cause of constipation in canines is a poor diet. Dog food bought from the store might seem like a great choice, but every pet reacts differently. Dry foods that are high in grain can cause a hard stool, and that might make it tougher for your Frenchie to go to the toilet. Make sure your dog is getting lots of water to drink, too. Dehydration can play a big role in causing French Bulldog constipation. Getting over this problem might be as simple as adding a little water to the food bowl when dinner time comes around. Keep track of precisely what your Frenchie is eating daily. Avoid giving them too many treats during the week, and try a variety of different foods to find the perfect match for your dog. Should I Be Worried? Hard stools, too, may be a sign of more severe issues that require a professional diagnosis. Have your Frenchie checked for worms regularly throughout the year, and look for warning signs to catch any serious health issues ahead of time. Keep your pet away from plastic bags, and throw away any damaged cushions that they could be gnawing on. The easiest way to treat the problem immediately is by using a doggy stool softener. You can get them at your local pet store, or you can have them prescribed by a veterinarian. Daily exercise is vital for any pet, but it can also contribute to better digestion. So make sure your little buddy is getting plenty of fun outdoors for overall health. Lastly, be sure to give them plenty of water to drink every day and cut out dry foods until their constipation clears up. Focus on improving their diet, and keep them hydrated. Your furry friend will be back to normal in no time with the right help. Pebble-like stools Distended abdomen If you pay close attention to Cookie you can catch the issue in short order and start some type of treatment plan. In the fruit category along with pumpkin , you can give him peaches, pears, and apples. Among vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, and Kale will do the trick. Some dogs will launch into these edibles without fuss. Munch, however, likes his ground up. Add about 1 Tbs to his regular food per 25 pounds of weight. Since French Bulldogs rarely weigh over 28 pounds, one 1 Tbs daily is fine. Olive oil is a natural stool softener that works fairly quickly. Coconut oil soothes the digestive tract, having anti-inflammatory properties. Daily is the recommended dose for small dogs. Massaging A Constipated French Bulldog There are different approaches to massaging your Frenchie to help with constipation. Sit on the floor with Cookie laying on her back in your lap. Using small circular motions, massage the lower abdomen in both directions clockwise and counterclockwise for five minutes each. You can use the other hand on her chest for reassurance. Also, speak soft words of encouragement. Next use larger circular motions, again 5 minutes in each direction. Make sure to use a flat palm, not your fingers. Place her on her side. Apply pressure with both of your hands at the neckline, slowly stroking toward the tail. Repeat 20 times. Stop, and gently move them to the other side. This relaxes some of the muscles she uses to poop. You can alternatively use the stroking method when she is sitting. This time, place one hand on each side of her body at her neckline. As before, move slowly down to her tail. You can give your French Bulldog a laxative, but only one prescribed by your vet. This applies to stool softeners too. Never give human laxatives to your pooch. Minimally Much should poop once a day, but he may go as many as five times daily. The ones who poop more eat small, regular meals. When constipation goes unchecked it can become serious. Their bowel fills and fills with a large amount of feces. In turn, munch will seem lazy, vomit, refuse food, and continue straining without production. If it has been more than two days since Munch and Cookie took a healthy poop , call your vet and make an appointment. Initially, you can try the simple approaches of water and food additives that are known to help digestion. Post Views: 1,
The Beabull: the good and the bad What is a Beabull dog? The Beabull is the cross between the English Bulldog and the Beagle , two of the most popular breeds today. The Bulldog and Beagle mix is becoming just as well-known among pet owners because of its even temperament. Beabulls are kid-friendly dogs , showing patience and affection even with the youngest children. Bulldog-Beagle hybrids are also playful and eager to please due to their Beagle parentage. Beagle and Bulldog mixes are companion dogs that are extremely devoted to their families. The crossbreed is adaptable to a wide variety of living situations; a Bulldog-Beagle will be as happy in an apartment as in a house with a backyard. Whether your family is highly active or laid-back, a Beagle and Bulldog cross will fit right in. What does a Beabull look like? Since neither the Bulldog nor the Beagle is particularly large, you can expect the Bulldog and Beagle mix to be a small dog as well. These pint-sized dogs are most likely bred from mini or teacup English Bulldogs or so-called Pocket Beagles, which nowadays are simply Beagles that are smaller than the standard. Common coat colors for this crossbreed include white, brown, merle, speckled, brindle, golden, and spotted. What is the energy level of a Beabull? The Bulldog Beagle mix usually enjoys lazing around all day and will experience occasional bursts of energy. Is training a Beabull difficult? Beagle-Bulldog hybrids enjoy mentally stimulating tasks and challenges, so these dogs are generally easy to train. The Bulldog Beagle mix responds best to positive reinforcement, especially when its favorite food is used as a reward. This way, you can prevent problems with aggression as your dog grows up. Unfortunately, these nibbles can turn out to be quite painful, especially since most Beabulls inherit the strong jaws of their Bulldog parents. One way to discourage biting in your Beabull is to stop playing with the puppy as soon as it uses its mouth on your skin. You can also give your dog chew toys, so it learns to bite only appropriate objects. Howling Despite their docile nature, Bulldog-Beagle mixes tend to howl, a trait they get from the Beagle. Your Bulldog Beagle cross will usually howl out of boredom or separation anxiety. You can keep your Beagle-Bulldog mix occupied by taking it for a walk or playing fetch. Like with most dogs, certain health issues may affect the lifespan of a Bulldog Beagle mix. Many Beabulls suffer from brachycephaly , a shortened facial structure that causes breathing issues and other health problems. This condition is common among Bulldog breeds and their crosses. The Frug , a French Bulldog and Pug mix, for instance, is a brachycephalic breed as well. Due to this condition, most Beagle-Bulldog hybrids must be closely supervised during exercise and kept indoors during hot weather. Aside from brachycephaly, Bulldog Beagle mixes may be prone to digestion problems, hip dysplasia, and intervertebral disk disease. These crossbreeds may also inherit a predisposition to hypothyroidism and eye problems due to their Beagle parentage. No matter how much your dog may beg, keep its diet restricted to 3 to 4 cups of dog food every day. If your Beagle and Bulldog crossbreed has an underbite, put his food in a shallow, wide bowl. This will make it easier for your dog to eat. Grooming Most Beabulls are heavy shedders, especially in the spring and fall. During these seasons, you may need to brush your Beagle-Bulldog mix as much as 3 to 4 times a week to get rid of dead hair and keep its coat shiny. You can save some effort in removing loose hair from your Bulldog-and-Beagle mix by running a vacuum cleaner over its coat. Due to its heavy shedding, the Bulldog Beagle Mix is not a hypoallergenic breed. If you feel like your Beagle and Bulldog crossbreed is getting too dirty between baths, you can wipe over its coat with a damp cloth. Where can I find Beabull puppies for sale? Here are some Beabull breeders you can contact:. Beabull Highlights Beabulls are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Beagle or English Bulldog parents. The most common colors of Beabulls are brown and white, tri-colored, gold, and solid white. Their coats can be solid, spotted, or even brindle. Due to the amount of shedding, they are not suited for owners who suffer from allergies. The Beabull is a sturdy dog who will often engage in rough and mouthy play, so until your pup is fully trained, it is best to keep an eye on children when they interact. While they can be considered lazy, these pups tend to get bursts of energy and will need a quick game of fetch or a walk to burn it off. After that exercise, Beabulls will most likely want to just curl up with their owners. Due to their stubborn nature and mischievous streaks, Beabulls are not well suited for first time dog owners. Beabull History The Beabull dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but once designer breeds gained popularity, breeders began intentionally mixing Beagles and English Bulldogs, likely twenty years or so ago in North America. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to elongate the muzzle of the English Bulldog, which often creates breathing problems. They continued to create Beabulls as demand for this mild mannered companion dog climbed. Even though the Beabull mixed breed got their start as a designer breed, some have still ended up in shelters or in rescue groups. If this dog is the one for you, consider adoption. Check your local shelters, rescue groups, and breed specific Beagle or English Bulldog rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breeds and find homes for them. Beabull Size As the Beabull is still a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That being said, as a mix between Beagle and English Bulldog parents, you can expect Beabulls to be on the medium side. Most Beabulls weigh in at 30 to 60 pounds and range in height from twelve to 16 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger depending on which breed characteristics they acquire from both parents. Beabull Personality Many Beabull lovers describe this mixed breed as playful, social, and strong-willed. Like most Beagles, they tend to bark and howl rather frequently. Due to the strong-willed, stubborn personality of the Beabull, early training is key. They will often get mouthy while playing, and seeing as one parent is the English Bulldog, these playful nips and bites may be painful. Beabulls are very intelligent dogs and it is imperative to be patient and firm with training. They do best with positive reinforcement, especially treats, seeing as they are very food-driven pups. The Beabull is a very social dog and will be just as happy having one owner as they would be having an entire family to adore. They are very adaptable dogs and are extremely easy to please, making them a great pet. Beabull Health The Beabull is a fairly healthy mixed breed, but can be predisposed to the health issues faced by Beagles and English Bulldogs. Some of the more common health problems Beabulls suffer from include: Obesity. But what they will do is constantly find new and interesting ways to keep you on your toes and your shoe collection might pay the ultimate price. Who knows? Until you have established bloodlines, individuals within the breed will vary wildly in terms of appearance, personality, and more. Some Beabulls strongly resemble smush-faced Beagles, while others look like pointy Bulldogs. Many dogs with underbites have problems picking up and eating many foods, and you might need to try a variety of kibbles before you can find one that your dog can chow down on with ease. However, be careful rewarding them with treats, as these dogs can quickly turn a regular training session into an extortion fest. Their stubborn streak will often have them refusing to do tricks or commands that you know they know — until you show them the merchandise, that is. These dogs are extremely loyal, loving, and even-tempered. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Be aware, however, that if you have a rebellious child, giving them a Beabull will be like supplying them with a partner in crime. They actually do well with cats, as both animals are happy curling up and watching TV next to you. Be careful not to feed them too many simple carbs, so avoid foods with ingredients like wheat, grain, or soy. As mentioned above, their underbite may limit what kinds of kibble they can eat comfortably, so you might have to experiment with various shapes. Round kibble is often one of the most difficult shapes to eat, so look for brands that offer variety. You could switch your Beabull to a raw diet. Ask your vet how to go about it the right way before you switch, though. Typically, about an hour of activity per day is plenty, and that can come from walks through the neighborhood, games of tug-of-war, or a vigorous training exercise. These pooches can be prone to overheating, and if they have a stubby nose, they may not be able to breathe as well as other dogs. Occasionally rewarding them with praise or head scratches is totally acceptable, regardless of what your Beabull will try to tell you. This prevents bacteria from building up, which can lead to a nasty infection. Clean out their ears at the same time and for the same reason. You should clip their nails and brush their teeth regularly as well. Minor Conditions. He is my first dog. He is a mix between an English Bulldog and Beagle. I raised him since he was first born. Very loving, smart and outgoing. He is very lazy, but loves to play outside when he is feeling hyper. I love his howl. He guards our home and is a member of our family. It is a cross between the Beagle and the Bulldog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. We got him when he was 8 weeks old. He loves to play tug-of-war and go for walks. He can be very lazy at times and other times loves to be outside playing with any kind of balls. He sploots a lot known as frog legging. I just love when he does that. He is loveable, happy, playful, the best cuddle buddy and is so smart. He loves to play ball, go for walks and socialize with humans and other dogs. My boyfriend and I have been raising him since he was 8 weeks old. He is always lazy in the morning and likes to stay up late! I love my pup so much! He loves to lie in traditional Bulldog style, taking up most of whatever area he is in. Ollie is three years old and weighs 63 lbs. If he even thinks he heard you say "rope" he is on a dead run to find it and play. Claudette the Beabull at 3 years old—"Claudette had been returned to the shelter three times and was on death row when we found each other. Claudette is a clown who loves to wiggle into the heart of everyone she meets. She loves to hike, ride in the car and snuggle. Claudette has two brothers and one sister furbaby and lots of dog friends. And above all else loves to play soccer and will retrieve soccer balls and basket balls as long as someone will kick them. He is absolutely hilarious. He loves to go for walks , so much as have to spell it out w-a-l-k. He lies with his feet flat on the floor, typical of Bulldogs. He knows how to sit, stay, shake and roll over, and we have watched the Dog Whisperer together and now he has to wait to eat his food until we say "okay. Although very hyper like a Beagle, she can be lazy too like a Bulldog. She chews on anything and everything. But at the end of the day, exhausted from playing, she can be VERY loveable! I love this mix and am very happy with having her in the family! Duke is an excellent dog. He loves to run in the yard and cuddle in the house. He is very stubborn and was difficult to train because he had his own ideas of training. He is incredibly intelligent and will try to out-smart you with everything. If you hide his toy duck in the house and take him outside for hours, he will come in the house and find the duck right away. Duke has the body of a Bulldog, head of a Beagle, and the attitude of the Bulldog. He is very loving and wants to always be near you. He does best with having a daily walk and frequent trips outside. He currently weighs 54 lbs. He does not bark, but will sometimes give you the Beagle howl. He is very observant and will lie like a Bulldog while watching TV. Lola is a little over 1 year old now and weighs about 50 lbs. She's got a great temperament! Eager to please us, playful and loving. This is the best dog I've ever owned! Size Life Span The exceptional personalities of both the Beagle and the English Bulldog are merged in the Beabull; a superb family dog and low-maintenance companion for even the novice dog owner. The two breeds, which make up the Beabull, were extremely popular in Europe and the U. When those qualities outgrew their usefulness in the 20th century, the Beabull offered a more modern and family-friendly alternative for this extraordinary gene pool. A Beabull that tends to be more mischievous and rambunctious with bursts of hyperactivity is likely to be more Beagle-dominant. Either way, the Beabull is a friendly, good-natured, and loyal family dog. They are very intelligent and very devoted companions. Your Beabull is likely to follow you wherever you go. Some Beabulls are very easygoing. Some Beabulls, who are especially Beagle-dominant, will have a comical quality about them. They are also very affectionate and might climb into your lap. Although they are known to have a stubborn streak, they are, generally, easily trained. Caution should be taken with a particularly clever Beabull, who will try to outsmart you for extra treats. The Beabull is a highly adaptable dog that does well in all kinds of environments. They are sporty as well as great house pets. They do well in most climates, but, as with any dog, do not typically do well in extreme hot or cold. They will adapt to apartment living or in the securely fenced-in yard of a house. They can keep up with an active family, but can also adapt to the lifestyle of a family, which is less active. Engagement and mental stimulation is key. As loyal members of the family, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time. This designer breed will inherit the particular health issues of both of its Beagle and English Bulldog ancestors. Asking your breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see any health clearances can help allay potential health concerns. Like most highly intelligent breeds, the Beabull is most happy when she is mentally stimulated. A bored Beabull might try to create her own fun by getting into mischief. Owners who derive satisfaction from engaging in interesting activities with their dogs will find a perfect fit with the Beabull. Playtime with challenging games and toys can help keep your Beabull engaged. Beabulls can have a stubborn streak at times. So, they tend to be a better fit for more experienced owners. They can be a good fit for novice owners as long as obedience classes are part of the process. Beabulls can be noisy dogs, especially when emitting a powerful beagle howl. Owners with children are especially pleased to have this playful, devoted, and protective pet to engage with their kids. However, they can exhibit bursts of high-energy behavior and play-bite a bit too aggressively at times. Socialization and training early on can help curb any behaviors that might be unwanted once your Beabull is fully grown. However, they are heavy shedders and require frequent brushing just to collect their copious amounts of fur. You do only want to bathe as needed. Bathing too frequently can cause your Beabull to have dry skin. The ears of the Beabull require special attention. Because they have inherited the long, floppy ears of the Beagle, their ears are especially susceptible to infection. You will want to check these regularly to ensure they are dry and free of dirt. Their wrinkled skin should also be checked periodically for parasites and skin problems, to which they may also be especially vulnerable. Their nails should be trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly as well. Young Beabulls have a ton of energy, but they can be trained to control their own enthusiasm. They are known to have sudden bursts of energy, which looks like hyperactivity. Some family playtime and daily walks with their favorite people are all that is required to keep them happy and healthy. They are able to amuse themselves in a securely fenced-in backyard. Beabulls are medium-sized dogs that can stand between 12 and 14 inches at the shoulder and can weigh between 30 and 50 pounds. Looking at the size of the parents will give you a better idea of what size to expect in your Beabull. A Beabull will generally live for years. Beabull Puppies for Sale.

Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Jack-A-Poos are at the top of the spectrum for energy and needing exercise. This is good news to combat their tendency for weight gain. They are versatile at either apartment or house lifestyles, due to their smaller size. They do enjoy time outside for mental and physical stimulation, and long walks and games agility, catch, etc. That smaller size could also make them vulnerable to wild predators. Their sense of adventure and wanderlust could send them off running into unfamiliar territory, as well. Brushing their teeth a few times a week is also a good idea to promote good dental health. You can ask your vet to show you how to do any of these tasks. Dividing the food into two or three meals during the day, as opposed to unlimited access, will help your dog not to overeat. You may need to take them outside to go to the bathroom before that, especially if they are very young or very old. Every dog is different with how quickly they need to go to the bathroom, but the more vigorous exercise should wait till after the safety period. Colors include white, black, brown, tan, gray, and blue—and coats can be a mix of these colors. Noses are always black, and eyes are always brown. Grooming is fairly low-maintenance, only necessitating brushing once a week and bathing as needed. Professional grooming every so often may help the dog look their best, too. In general, Jack-A-Poos are pretty tolerant to both heat and cold, but there are a few differences. Poodles do not have an undercoat, which means they tolerate heat more easily and cold less easily. Jack Russell Terriers do have an undercoat. Many small dogs do well with coats or sweaters when it is extra cold or snowy in the winter, so that may be helpful for your Jack-A-Poo, too. As with all dogs, Jack-A-Poos will do best if they have early socialization and training. This will emphasize the loving, loyal traits of your dog, and it can minimize the hunting ancestry. With early socialization, Jack-A-Poos can be great with children and other pets. However, without that early socialization, they may become aggressive. However, you may want to try Jack Russell Terrier or Poodle breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. While genetic testing is not very common in mixed breeds, a quality breeder can often breed out common problems that afflict the pure bread parents, leading to a higher price. These pups can also be found in dog shelters. These dogs tend to be loyal and love to spend time with their human companions. They create strong bonds with their families, especially with children. Many consider the Jack Russell parent the perfect earth work dog. The Poodle parent is one of the most intelligent dog breeds. The poodle pan is a water retriever and has a remarkable swimming ability. It gets along well with all family members, especially if it receives plenty of early socialization. The Jack-A-Poo gets all its intelligence from its Poodle parents. Their high intelligence makes them great watchdogs. Are These Dogs Good for Families? It usually chooses to hang out near family members and like to be included in any family functions. Its excellent watchdog skills will keep your family safe. A Jack Russell Terrier and a Poodle getting into mischief. You can expect to feed your pet up to a cup of dog food each day spread out over several meals. We recommend a dry dog food with high-quality protein listed as its top ingredient. We also recommend foods that contain antioxidants and omega fats. If you are a jogger, they might like to run with you, and in many cases, children can help your pet get the exercise it needs. Swimming is a great way to burn off excess energy. The Jack-A-Poo is also eager to please and will enjoy learning new tricks to satisfy their master. There are many tricks you can teach them, and the key to keeping them interested is to use positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement means to shower your pet with praise and offer treats when they successfully follow one of your commands. As they get better at following your commands, you can reduce the number of treats you give out to prevent weight gain. Holding your training sessions at the same time each day is also a critical component of a successful training session. You will need to brush then about once a week with a stiff-bristled brush to remove any tangles and debris that may have become trapped in the fur. Since their ears are floppy, you will also need to clean them often to reduce the risk of ear infections due to moisture and wax build-up. You will also need to trim the nails about once a month, or when you hear them clicking on the floor when they walk. Minor Conditions Patellar Luxation: Patellar Luxation is a condition that causes the kneecap to slip out of place due to the stretching of the Patellar ligament. Hip Dysplasia is a genetic condition that causes the hip socket to form incorrectly. The improperly formed hip socket does not allow the smooth movement of the leg bone, which wears down and deteriorates over time, making it harder for your pet to move around. Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia include decreased activity, decreased motion, pain, stiffness, and a wobbling gate. In some cases, surgery can be an effective form of treatment. Serious Conditions Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a condition in dogs that can cause them to have seizures. Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder that affects dogs, and almost one percent of all dogs suffer from it. If you notice your dog having seizures, you will need to keep a detailed diary that you can share with your vet to help diagnose and treat the condition. Most treatments involve medication, and most pets can live a long life with epilepsy. Symptoms of this disease are vague but may include lethargy, diarrhea, and vomiting. You may also notice intermittent shaking and sudden weight loss. Both are typically the same height and weight and have the same temperament. Summary The Jack-A-Poo makes a great family pet as well as an affectionate companion. It likes to play games, learn new tricks, and watch over the house. It may chase some smaller animals around the yard, but the Jack-A-Poo usually gets along well with family pets, especially if they receive early socialization. We hope you have enjoyed reading our look into the Jack-A-Poo breed and found something you like. Knowing the parents can help you better understand what a Jackapoo is like. Miniature Poodles Toy Poodle Poodles come in three varieties: standard, miniature, and toy. As such, Poodles are fantastic sniffers. However, nowadays Miniature Poodles are bred for companionship and while they enjoy sniffing and working, they also enjoy the company of their owners. Poodles are extremely intelligent, active, and fast learners, and many Poodle owners attest to their intelligence by describing them as intuitive and easy to train. People used Jack Russells for hunting small games like rabbits, foxes, and birds. Like Poodles, the Jack Russell is also energetic and dislikes sitting still for too long. Due to their hunting instinct, they love to stay engaged and require plenty of mental enrichment throughout the week. However, putting in the time to give a Jack Russell menta stimulation and games is essential, otherwise they may become destructive think chewing your shoes or gnawing on your baseboards. Energetic Jackapoos are very active, which is a no-brainer considering the parent dogs are also highly energetic. If you plan to give your Jackapoo puppy a bunch of toys and expect them to be happy, the Jackapoo is not the right dog for you. Jackapoos need lots of attention and active participation from their owners. Jackapoos are ideal for active families who plan to take them on walks throughout the day. At least 60 minutes is ideal, along with training and mental stimulation. Social Jackpoodles are great family dogs. Intelligent As both Jack Russell Terriers and Mini Poodles are highly intelligent, the Jackapoo is one smart cookie The Jackapoo is quick on the uptake, easily learning new tricks and family routines, and even sniffing out friends and foes. Surprisingly, this small pooch makes a great guard dog. Their bold bark and unwavering confidence are sure to scare off any unwanted visitors. Stubborn Despite being intelligent and easy to train Jackapoos also have a stubborn streak, which means you need to have plenty of patience with them. With the right training, you can teach your Jackapoo to listen to your commands and—in most cases—listen to you. Loyal Jackapoo dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty to their owners. These loving pups form strong bonds with their human family members and will go to great lengths to protect them. They are highly affectionate and thrive on attention, and can be anxious when you leave. Jackapoos are also highly intuitive and can sense when their owners are feeling down or stressed, providing them with comfort and support. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons, but the biggest is for stress relief and boredom. You can easily correct this behavior by ensuring you provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Both Poodles and Jack Russell Terriers enjoy swimming, so if you want to mix things up, take your Jackapoo for a swim. Appearance Colors Prepare to be charmed by the colorful colors of the Jackapoo puppy! These playful pups come in a variety of colors, including black, white, grey, blue, brown, tan, and even mixed shades. With muscular bodies inherited from their Jack Russell Terrier parent and a coat that resembles their Poodle parent, these pups are truly one-of-a-kind. Coat A Jackapoos coat depends on genetics, but typically, they have a wiry coat, giving them a scruffy and cute appearance. However, they can also have wavy and curly coats, thanks to their Poodle genetics. Height and weight Weighing between 13 to 25 pounds and growing to a height of about 10 to 16 inches, Jackapoos are the perfect size for any home. A daily brush is ideal, but at the very least, it should be brushed once every two to three days. This will help to distribute the natural oils in their coat, keeping it shiny and healthy. This can prevent common issues such as ear infections, tooth decay, and overgrown nails that can cause discomfort to your furry friend. This can be done with a warm cotton cloth and a cleaning solution recommended by your vet or groomer. Another crucial aspect of maintenance is dental care. Long nails can cause pain when walking or running and can even lead to joint problems over time. Health problems Jackapoos are susceptible to the same health problems as their parent breeds. Here are some health problems known to Jackapoos: Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that affects the hip joint and can lead to arthritis and lameness in Jackapoo dogs. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help prevent this condition, but if your dog is diagnosed with hip dysplasia, medication, surgery, or other treatment options may be necessary. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that can cause seizures in Jackapoo dogs. Treatment for hypothyroidism involves hormone replacement therapy. Patellar luxation is a condition in which the kneecap pops out of place, causing pain and limping in Jackapoo dogs. Mild cases may not require treatment, but severe cases may require surgery. Skin disease can affect Jackapoo dogs, causing itching, redness, and other symptoms. Causes of skin disease can vary, including allergies, parasites, or infections. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause of the skin disease. Cataracts can develop in Jackapoo dogs, causing cloudy or blurred vision. Treatment options may include medication, surgery, or other management strategies, depending on the severity of the cataracts. The cost depends on factors like parent breed history and whether the puppy is dewormed, vaccinated, spayed, or chipped. You can cut these costs with things like pet insurance, although, the jury is still out on whether pet insurance actually saves money in the end. Where to find Jackapoo puppies Breeders Being that Jackapoos are hard to find, finding a reputable breeder can be even more challenging. Start by researching breeders online and reading reviews from previous buyers. A reputable breeder will prioritize the health and welfare of their dogs over profit. I put together a list of Doodle dog rescues to help you find a Jackapoo available for adoption. Alternatively, you can call up Jackapoo breeders and ask to have your name put on an adoption list. Oftentimes, breeders will take back the dog if the family they sold it to can no longer care for it. Jackapoos need lots of stimulation, both physical and mental, in order to be happy. Aside from that, they also need someone who can put in the time to care for their non-shedding coat, which requires plenty of brushing and trips to the groomers. Jackapoos are energetic, fun, and love to be by your side. No, the AKC does not recognize the Jackapoo. Do Jackpoodles shed a lot? But they require lots of brushing and grooming. Are Jackapoos good for first-time dog owners? Jackapoos are suitable for first-time dog owners as long as they can commit to daily exercise and training! It is a cross between the Jack Russell and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Here he is on a walk. I had stopped to see how he'd react to the many distractions of the park a small herd of deer had run by, causing many of the dogs in their gardens to go crazy! But instead of straining to meet the other dogs are chase the deer which would make any JRT huntsman proud , he stops and looks up at me! I was worried about him being too feisty or energetic but he seems to be very Poodle-ly in personality rare for this mix by what I've been reading and quickly accepts others as alpha. He enjoys walks, belly and ear scratching sessions, and chilling with the Neapolitan Mastiff next door although I think their friendship is pretty one sided. He is 3-quarters Poodle and a quarter Jack Russell. Jackapoo puppies A Working History The Jackpoo has been being produced accidentally for decades, but has only recent taken off as a designer dog breed. Their history to now is really the origins of their ancestral breeds. Jack Russell Terriers were bred in England in the mids. Bred to be used as hunting dogs, mostly for fox, rabbit and other small game. Quick enough to keep up with other hunting breeds, but small and sturdy enough to flush and capture small game. The Poodle has a longer history, dating back over years. The Standard Poodle originated in Germany, where it was bred to be a retrieving dog for duck hunters. The Standard Poodle, a full-sized dog, was bred down to the companion Miniature Poodle. The first Toy Poodle , an even smaller version, was bred in America in the early 20th century. What Do They Look Like? Like any mixed-breed dog, there will be some variance in Jackapoo appearance from dog to dog. Your Jackapoo puppy could inherit more characteristics of the Poodle, or more of the Jack Russell Terrier. This is typically a small dog, weighing around lbs and measuring inches. Their adult size will depend a little on whether it was bred from a Miniature Poodle or a Toy Poodle. Coat color is usually black, brown, tan or white, or a mix of multiple shades. Some longer tufts of hair around the face and snout are common. Do Jackapoos Shed A Lot? Did you know that the Jackapoo is often considered hypoallergenic? However, many allergy sufferers report being able to spend more time around low-shedding breeds, like the Jackapoo! They will however need regular grooming and clipping to keep their fur coats tidy and mat-free! Temperament Traits Generally speaking, the Jackapoo will inherit the intelligence and pride of the Poodle, and the active, hardworking nature of the Jack Russell. Some break the mould and bear a very strong resemblance to one parent over the other. But what results is always an active, high-energy crossbreed that loves to have a job to do. Jackapoos require frequent exercise, and love to play outside. They also can be big barkers, if not trained otherwise. Jackapoos are not typically aggressive, so long as they are trained and socialized from a young age. The Jack Russell Terrier can be somewhat stubborn or aggressive with other animals, so again, socialization is very important. They can be a bit noisy, but tend not to push or jump up. And are likely to be too small to knock over a kid too. Training The trainability of the Jackapoo depends on which parent breed comes through stronger. The Poodle is famous for its obedience and trainability, while the Jack Russell can have a bit more of a stubborn side. Both parent breeds are extremely intelligent, so training usually goes well. Some Jackapoos can have a stubborn, prideful streak, which can sometimes complicate training plans. Patience might be required. Your Jackapoo should be trained frequently, using positive reinforcement training. If need be, you can hire a professional trainer — but most Jackapoos can be trained at home. The Jack Russell in your Jackapoo might cause the dog to bark frequently. This can usually be addressed through training, but nonetheless is something to keep in mind. Socialization and Exercise This is a very high energy dog! Your Jackapoo will need plenty of exercise every day. Socialization is very important for all dogs, but particularly for the Jackapoo. If they are not exposed to plenty of other animals, dogs, children and strangers, the Jackapoo can become stubborn or even aggressive. Health Fortunately, most of the common health concerns of the Jackapoo are mild. Dry skin, allergies, and ear infections are common in this breed, but easily treatable. Concerns like deafness, patellar luxation, arthritis, cataracts, thyroid disease and others are also possible be less frequently seen. They have a life expectancy of years. Ask the breeder to show you health test certificates for both parents, and where possible meet them both too. The puppies should be lively and alert, and the parents should be friendly and have an obvious strong bond with the breeder.

Some of My Favorite Products For Dog Owners How to Stop a Labradoodle from Smelling Some dogs are only showered once or twice a year and every time you start filling the bathtub, the dog is suddenly nowhere to be seen. But if you manage to turn it into a habit, each bath time will be much easier. Bathing your dog approximately once a month is a good idea. Start by brushing it a bit. Mats will only get worse if they get in the water. I recommend using the FURminator Deshedding tool affiliate link Start by filling the bathtub so the water is about the knee-level of your dog. Having a non-slip mat is also helpful. Washing your dog. Now lift your dog into the tub all while praising and encouraging it a lot. Now hold the dog with one hand, and use the other hand to pour water over it. Use a sponge to wash the dog in its face. Be careful not to get shampoo in its eyes, as dogs hate that just as much as you and I. Now rinse your Labradoodle with clean, lukewarm water until all the shampoo is out of the fur. Drying your dog. Start by squeezing as much water out of the fur as possible using your hands, before you start using towels. One final thing is to check that the ears are totally dry, as bacteria thrive in moist dog ears. Fresh Food Diet Dogs are natural carnivores and they thrive on meat. But if the smell is more yeasty and heavy, it could be due to an ear infection. If your dog is scratching its ears, or shaking his head, or just appears to be in a state of general discomfort, take it to the vet, as they can quickly identify an ear infection, and provide the proper treatment. Of to roll in something smelly! Allergy Skin Problem The smell could also be because of the different types of skin problems. This is also something your vet will be quick to diagnose. You might notice they are swollen, and that could be an indication that you should take your dog to a vet and have the glands fully expressed. Another sign is that the dog will probably also be in a bit of pain when sitting or pooping. Or attempt to lick or even bite its rear end. So there you have it. Hopefully, this has given you some insight into the possible reasons, and means of how to fix the problem. These links are affiliate links, so if you do end up using the links, I will earn a commission. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. By Chris The last thing you want to hear is that the new Labradoodle you just brought into your life is going to be smelly. But why does my Labradoodle smell so bad? Can if be fixed yep! The truth of the matter is that all dogs stink, but some stink more than others. Labradoodles in particular can be more susceptible to certain odours for a variety of reasons. The primary reason why Labradoodles can be more prone to smelling like any Poodle mix is because they are very active, love the outdoors, and LOVE water. This already sounds like a recipe for disaster. It means that there is a greater chance of them getting dirty, which increases the likelihood of infections, allergies, and dragging who knows what throughout your house. Aside from their active lifestyle, there are a multitude of other reasons why your Labradoodle may smell. All of which we will cover below. Why Does My Labradoodle Stink? Labradoodles can carry a smelly odor for a variety of reasons. However, the most common reasons are typically; ear infections, a dirty coat, allergies, gas, dental issues, or anal glands. A Red Labradoodle puppy sits on the grass. Ear infections In general, all doodles are prone to ear infections due to their Poodle inheritance. Poodles inner ear hair can block the airflow, and cause bacteria, and moisture to build up inside their ears. Outside of the inner ear hair, Labradoodles also have long, droopy ears which can mean that they are more likely to trap dirt, grease, and other unwanted substances which can lead to infection. If you notice your dog scratching their ears, or shaking their head more than normal, or is in a general state of discomfort. They likely have an infection, which will have to be dealt with immediately by taking them to the vet. Both the Poodle and Labrador have garnered massive reputations for being spectacular hunters, and water dogs. This combination means your Labradoodle will also inherit much of the same traits. While this fun-loving nature is part of why we love Labradoodles, it can also mean more is being dragged through the house, and latching onto their coat. A beautiful black Labradoodle puppy! Photo by Bennilover CC-by-SA no modifications Allergies Another common problem many Labradoodle owners run into is their dog smelling due to an allergic reaction. This could be because of a new shampoo, new food, or even a reaction to fleas. Tying into the aforementioned point of doodles being very active, they may run into situations where they smear themselves in something unpleasant, which can result in a plethora of negative results. Fleas can easily latch onto dogs , and once their saliva gets into the dogs bloodstream, the dog can become infected, or develop an allergic reaction. Dogs much like humans can become allergic to just about anything, so be conscious of any new shampoos, diets, or materials in their environment, as they could be having an adverse effect to these products. Allergies may be present if you notice excessive itching, swelling, or irritation in any of these areas. Gas diet One of the biggest culprits when it comes to your Labradoodle stinking is due to gas, which can generally be linked directly to diet. While all dogs get gassy from time to time, if it persists, or if there is an unusually foul smell present. It could be a sign to change their diet. Dogs are natural carnivores, which means they need meat to live a healthy lifestyle. Look for a fresh food diet that helps eliminate bad smells, as they are far more natural due to the removal of additives, and ingredients found in typical dog food. This can be most commonly due to gum disease as bacteria gets trapped in the gums, or plaque build up. The good news is that plaque can be easily removed by you at home, however if the issue persists and turns into calculus, or tartar then this will have to be professionally cleaned. Labradoodle puppy eyes are remarkable. Anal glands The final option that could be present is your pup having issues with their anal glands. Also, if you notice a strong and rather fishy smell coming from your Labradoodle, this is typically not normal, and could be the result of anal gland issues. If you notice any of these symptoms, you should definitely take your dog to the vet, and have the glands looked at professionally. How to Stop a Labradoodle from Stinking? When it comes to removing the stink, a lot of it will depend entirely on what the exact issue is. If you fear that your dog breed may have an ear infection, dental problems, or anal sacs, then you are likely going to have to schedule an appointment with your local vet. However, if the issue can be narrowed down to something more simple such as an allergy, gas, or a dirty coat. These are things that you can change from home. Grooming Away the Smell This is without a doubt the most important step to take to removing the stink, and will go a long way in preventing it down the road as well. When it comes to Labradoodles specifically, they love water which can make the grooming routine even more paramount as mats only get worse with water. The next step you should seek to take is to regularly bathe your dog. A huge deterrent for owners is the reaction their dog has as soon as you turn the tap on. However, if you turn it into more of a habit once a month , the dog will become much more comfortable, and the entire process will become much easier. While washing your dog, make sure to take it slow, go through the entire coat, and make sure to shower the dog with loads of praise, and positive reinforcement treats. After the bath, the drying portion is also essential as any moisture leftover could just put you back at square one. Start by squeezing out as much water as possible before using the towel, and pay extra close attention to the ears! The best Labradoodle foods are nutritious and packed with protein Clean The House and Dog Areas Post grooming, the next most important factor for removing any unwanted stink is by staying on top of the house cleaning. Remember to sweep up, and vacuum any remaining hair left over after the grooming session, but even making it into a regular routine would be beneficial. Many people underestimate the importance of regular vacuuming and hair removal, but together with daily grooming will go a long way in preventing odor. There are also a variety of electric air filters, and purifiers that help to remove any unwanted dust, odour, and chemicals, leaving your room smelling good, and clean. Being a mix between a Labrador and a Poodle, they have a coat that sheds less than other dogs. Various factors can cause a Labradoodle to smell. Some Labs may have a stronger smell than others, depending on various factors. Here are some reasons why some Labs may smell more than others. If a Labradoodle is fed a poor-quality diet, it can cause them to have a stronger odor. Image Credit: litthouse, Pixabay Skin Issues Labradoodles are prone to skin issues, such as allergies and infections. If a Labradoodle has a skin issue, it can cause them to have a stronger smell. This is because their skin may produce more oils or bacteria, which can contribute to their odor. Odors can also be the result of parasitic or bacterial infections which will need to be treated. In most cases, these issues can be treated with a shot or oral medicine. General signs of skin infections will include redness, rashes, itching, and gnawing. Ear Infections Labradoodles are also prone to ear infections, which can cause them to have a strong smell. As a result, the infection can cause discharge and inflammation in the ear canal, which can produce a foul odor. Regular ear cleaning and veterinary care can help to prevent ear infections and reduce their odor. You can clean their ears with cotton swabs and a canine ear cleaning solution. Some of these factors are controllable, while others are not, unfortunately. Here are some other factors that can affect Labradoodle smell. Coat Type Labs can have a range of coat types , from curly to wavy to straight. The type of coat can affect the amount of natural oils and dander that the dog produces, which can impact their smell. Curly-coated Labradoodles typically produce less dander, while straight-coated Labradoodles will usually produce more. For example, if a Labradoodle spends a lot of time outside, they may be exposed to more dirt, pollen, and other environmental factors that can contribute to their odor. Similarly, if a Labradoodle lives in a home with smokers or other pets, their odor may be more noticeable. With proper care and attention, a Labradoodle can make a wonderful companion for many years to come. All dogs have their own unique odor, and some Labradoodles inherit coat characteristics which make them more pungent than other dogs. Do Labradors smell? Unfortunately, Labradors are considered to be one of the smellier dog breeds. This is largely due to their double coat, which consists of a coarse top coat to protect against bumps and scratches, and a soft undercoat that acts as an insulator. Labs also produce more natural oils from their skin than most other breeds. These features combine to make their coat water repellent perfect for swimming in icy cold water to retrieve waterfowl but also rather pungent — especially when wet! The natural oils are one source of their decidedly doggie odor. And Labs that frequently swim in ponds or lakes also pick up smells from those places — especially if dirty water is allowed to soak into their undercoat, and not washed out before it dries. Do Poodles smell? On the other hand, Poodles smell less than most breeds. All dogs have their own unique scent, influenced by genetics, lifestyle, diet, etc. And it should also be noted that every dog releases distinctive smells from their ears, mouth, and feet caused by natural bacteria and fungi. Do Labradoodles smell? So Labradoodle is likely to have one parent that smells most than most, and one that smells very little. Whether or not your Labradoodle smells really comes down to the type of coat that your pup inherits. Labradoodles with a single coat smell less than those with a double coat. Why Does my Labradoodle Smell? From misadventure to diet, and from bad breath to infection or skin allergies, there are a number of reasons why your Labradoodle could be smellier than normal. Bad breath is a common complaint among dog owners. There are four main causes: 1. Bacteria in the mouth The most common cause is bacteria in the mouth which produce volatile sulfur compounds. It can make their drool seem stinky. Regular toothbrushing and professional cleaning can improve halitosis in many cases by removing plaque build up. Peridontal diseases Tooth decay, gum disease and abscesses in the mouth or jaw can also cause bad breath. These need attention from a properly qualified veterinary dentist. Disorders of the gut Digestive problems due to poor diet or an imbalance of bad gut bacteria can also produce foul-smelling gasses which travel back up the esophagus. When this happens, it can usually be remedied by a change of diet. Which is why, if your Doodle has persistent halitosis, you should always enlist a vet to help find out why. To protect against infection, dry their ears gently and thoroughly every time they go in water. Other signs that your Labradoodle has an ear infection include scratching his ears, rubbing his head, inflammation of the ear, and discharge from the ear canal. If you suspect your dog has an ear infection, visit the vet. They may prescribe antibiotics to help them recover. When it comes to overpowering bad smells, a dog with excessive gas is one of the worst. It could be caused by the fiber source used in his kibble. Beans and other legumes, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, and foods containing lactose such as cheese, are other common food causes. And make sure you leave a gap between exercise and eating. Participating in vigorous exercise right before or after meals can cause flatulence and put your Labradoodle at risk of the life-threatening condition known as bloat. Chronic gas is also a sign of some health problems, including parasites, irritable bowel syndrome, and intestinal disease. All dogs have two small anal sacs which secrete a lubricant to help them pass feces comfortably. If these glands are blocked or the dog has an anal gland infection, this secretion becomes extremely stinky and very painful for them. This could be caused by a poor diet, or by structural abnormalities in the anal glands. Labradoodles are particularly prone to skin allergies and infections, which can produce a pungent scent. Wet dog is a strong smell all on its own, but if their skin stays damp it can lead to skin infections. Bacterial and yeast infections have a strong smell and might also be related to allergies. Irregularities in the glands or thyroid problems can also be underlying causes of smelly skin infections. How to Prevent a Labradoodle from Smelling A smelly Labradoodle is not always caused by something ominous. It could be that your pup just needs a bath with doggy shampoo. Washing and especially drying, a dog with thick curly hair can be a bit daunting so do check out our guide to getting your dog dry after a bath. Regularly washing their bedding is also something that can reduce nasty smells that often gets overlooked. Do you have a smelly Labradoodle? Tell us about your experiences in the comments. Rottweilers are of German descent. They have been traditionally used as guarding, herding, and hunting dogs. The Rottweiler Lab mix was perhaps inevitable with two such high demand parents. One of the best things about crossed breeds is the wide range of potential shapes and personalities your dog could grow to have. But this can have its downside as well. In the case of the Labrottie, there are several different possibilities for both appearance and personality. Labradors and Rottweilers are different sizes, and your puppy may fall anywhere between. Rottweilers generally weigh up to pounds, while Labradors are significantly less heavy set at pounds. Rottweiler height can be up to 27 inches at the shoulder, whereas Labs only grow to a maximum of .Both breeds can vary in size within themselves, so it stands to reason that larger Labrador and Rottweiler parents will have a larger Labrottie pup. Most, however, should fall somewhere in the middle. Labrador Rottweiler Mix Coat Rottweilers are well known for their classic black and tan coloring. They have short, low-maintenance coats. Labs come in different colors. Yellow, chocolate, black — they could pass down their coloring to your Labrottie puppy, resulting in a unique coloration. All you can bank on is the range from both parents. Labrador Rottweiler Mix Shedding Labradors have a double coat that protects them from the cold in winter or while swimming in cold water. This is especially true during certain times of the year, as their winter coat starts to come loose. The Labrottie has the benefit of two parent breeds with generally low-maintenance coats. Both Labradors and Rottweilers have short, easily groomed coats. Rottweiler Lab mix pups will definitely have the same length coat. Then they may need a little more. Rottweiler Lab Mix Temperament Labradors have a proud history as faithful retriever dogs, whereas Rottweilers have an equally proud history as guard dogs. Labradors are generally friendly, and are bred specifically for the task of returning hunted game to their owners. A dog bred for this purpose needed to be comfortable around all sorts of people. Rottweilers, in their guarding capacity, have been bred in a way that a fearful and distrusting attitude toward strangers. But how does this combination affect your pup? Labrottie Personality First generation mixes are kind of like rolling a dice. Or you might end up with a protective guard dog that looks exactly like the Labrador. Rottie Lab Mix Aggression As a breed, Rottweilers are responsible for a disproportionate amount of dog attacks. They certainly appear to be among the more aggression-prone breeds. This should be seriously considered by people with kids. Guarding dogs are generally good with their families, but families have friends. Kids bring over other kids, and a family pet needs to be accepting of this. One is by meeting the Rottie parent and making sure they are totally at ease in the presence of you and your family. Socialization is vital for any breed, but especially for a breed like the Rottweiler. Rottweiler Lab Mix Socialization The idea of using traditional training techniques on your Rottweiler mix may be a daunting task for some owners. Fortunately, nowadays we have better and safer methods for training dogs. The first step is always socialization. Introduce your dog to lots of other dogs and people at a very young age to help desensitize them to strangers. You want them to happily accept people coming and going in their home as nothing to be afraid of. Your Rottweiler Lab mix puppy must meet new visitors every day. Make sure a large proportion of them are children. In the wild they would be under the protection of their family, so fear would be unnecessary. Therefore, this is the best time to throw them into all sorts of new situations. Training And Exercising Your Rottweiler Lab Mix Positive training techniques also play a vital role in crafting the obedience and temperament of a dog. For anyone still considering punishment-based training, I would strongly advise against it. Studies have shown that dogs trained in this manner are less obedient, and more likely to attack both their owners and strangers. Rottweiler Lab Puppy Training Like any puppy, your Rottador will require specialized training when they are young, in addition to socialization. Rottweiler Lab Mix Exercise All dogs require a good amount of exercise to keep them in shape. This is especially true with physically capable breeds like the Rottweiler and Lab. Given a good amount of space to run around in, your Labrottie will thrive. Lack of exercise combined with poor diet can unfortunately be deadly. Obesity in dogs, as in humans, leads to diabetes and other complications. Breeding two dogs that are genetically dissimilar results in a phenomena called hybrid vigor, whereby outbreeding undoes a lot of the harm done by inbreeding. These dogs can still carry on genetic diseases from either of their parents given the right circumstances. Labrador Health Both Labradors and Rottweilers suffer regularly from hip dysplasia, meaning their hips are improperly formed. One nasty complication of hip dysplasia is a disease called degenerative joint disorder. One of the more commonly reported concerns in Labradors is exercise induced collapse. This strange condition means that Labradors in the full swing of physical activity may suddenly be unable to hold themselves up. It has actually been linked to a gene, so it is doubtless inherited from dog to dog. Other problems commonly seen in Labradors include elbow dysplasia, PRA, obesity, ear problems, and skin allergies. Hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as PRA, can be tested for. Health testing is an important part of the process of taking care of our pets. Rottweiler Health Elbow dysplasia is also a very common condition in Rottweilers. A study of German Rottweilers found more than half suffered from this ailment. Rottweilers also appear to be susceptible to a few nasty neurological disorders, namely nueroaxonal dystrophy and leukoencephalomalacia. Both of these diseases are degenerative, meaning they gradually get worse and worse. Unfortunately there is no cure or treatment for either, and they sadly can be fatal. For more information on health tests and screens that should be done for Rottweilers, visit the British Veterinary Association and this panel from UC Davis Veterinary Medicine. Although he is potentially less likely to suffer from any of these diseases than a purebred dog, the risk is not removed. Health testing is still a vital part of good breeding practice, even for mixes. Rottweilers have a shorter span of years. Your Rottweiler and Labrador mix could fall anywhere in that range, depending on the health of the dog. What makes a pet good depends on the person, and also the individual pet. Your Lab Rott mix could look like a Labrador, but with the guarding instincts and characteristic wariness of the Rottweiler. Equally, your dog could look much more Rottweiler-ish and have the gentle, easily trainable personality of a Labrador. The likelihood is it will be somewhere in between. Socialization and training go a long way to producing a happy and friendly dog. But genetics play an important role. The Labrador Rottweiler mix is best suited to an active adult home, where the family is around for much of the day and is committed to positive reinforcement training methods. But they will need a lot of work in terms of socialization and training, to make sure you reduce the possibility of bad behavior later on. Both parents should be friendly, healthy and confident. This is by no means a guarantee, but stacks more of the odds in your favor. Please avoid buying from puppy mills or pet stores, as these have no real concern for the health of their animals. Rottweiler Lab puppies are now deliberately bred, but they have existed for quite a while by accident. You need to avoid backyard breeders by only going to someone who has mixed a beloved pet due to their excellent health and wonderful temperament. Good breeders ask lots of questions, and are happy to answer them in return. Both the Lab and Rottie parent of your puppy must have excellent hip and elbow scores. The breeder should provide you proof of this. They must also be clear for PRA and have recent unaffected eye tests from their vet. Should a Rottweiler Mix take after their Rottweiler parent, they will be a larger and strong dog breed that has a sweet, lovable personality and a protective instinct. Rotties tend to be calm and aloof. They also love their families and are lovable, playful, and affectionate with them. As long as they have been properly socialized, a Rottweiler will still be alert and protective of their families, but they will also be open and friendly to new people, especially once they have been introduced. The other parent breed will introduce some traits that could affect this in a Rottweiler Mix, so you want to make sure you ask about them. You can also meet the mother dog in-person to see what her temperament is like and the manners she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started training and socialization, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Rottweilers are moderately adaptable dogs that are better suited to homes with fenced yards. They are more sensitive to heat and do not tolerate extreme temperatures very well. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce the potential for a Rottweiler Mix to be more or less adaptable. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit all of them or any combination of them. From the Rottweiler side, potential health conditions to be aware of in a Rottweiler Mix include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and osteosarcoma. The other parent breed will introduce its own set of conditions and you want to be aware of them. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to ensure they are not passing issues on to puppies. So, you should be asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents anyway. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Although the Rottweiler is a highly trainable dog breed that picks up on things quickly and is eager to please, they can be a challenge for first-time dog owners. They need structure and consistency in training and a confident leader to train them. As such, puppy training classes are recommended. The other parent breed could make a Rottweiler Mix easier or more difficult to train, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your puppy, and also offer socialization opportunities. A Rottweiler Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. If they inherit the Rottie coat, they will shed a bit year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Due to a lack of good dental care for dogs , gum disease is one of the most common health issues for them. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. A Rottweiler is a working dog breed with moderate exercise requirements. They need a job to do in addition to daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity. If the other parent breed also sits in the moderate range, then you can expect something similar from a Rottweiler Mix. But, if the other parent breed is a high-energy breed, then you will need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Rottweilers usually stand inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, make sure you ask the breeder about them. Although it is not a guarantee, you can also meet the mother dog in-person to get an idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown Rottweiler Mix. Rotties generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should still be able to expect a similar life span in a Rottweiler Mix. Featured Rottweiler Mix Article.
labrador puppies one week old - January 24, In search of a new forever best friend? Not sure what puppy breed works best for you and your family? What does it take to be considered ideal for a family dog? How do you know if the Golden Retriever is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on Golden Retrievers! Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. Later in the s, they soon became a popular breed amongst American families when President Gerald Ford had a Golden named Liberty as his family dog. Golden Retrievers, like their name states, are golden! Their luxurious coats come in a variety of light to dark shades, ranging from light like the white Golden Retriever or English Cream to dark golden colors, even close to chocolate. Their coats feature feathering down their backs, chest, belly, hindquarters, and tails. Goldens have soft expressions combined with floppy expressive ears that give them a puppy-like appearance even as adults. Another thing to note of the Golden Retriever is that those fluffy coats are actually what are known as double coats. A strong water repellant coat on top coupled with a dense undercoat to regulate their body heat. This all means these pups can be heavy shedders! What are Golden Retrievers Personalities like? There is something to be said about being named a perfect family dog. The Golden Retriever breed is loyal, affectionate, playful, and gentle. If brought into a home with children, your Golden Retriever puppy will be a great addition for help introducing your new Golden Retriever pup to your kids and how to play together, check out our blog! But being a great family dog doesn't mean they are easy! Goldens have lots of energy which can come out in more jumping and being more mouthy, especially as puppies. Check our training tips for raising a well-mannered Golden at the end of this blog! Two to three daily walks are a must, and throw in fun activities like hiking or going for a swim, your pup will stay golden! Golden Retrievers are eager to please type of breed. They generally have happy go lucky demeanors which lends itself to affection and friendliness, including toward strangers. If you wanted a pup that could eventually become a service dog, a Golden Retriever is a great choice and make for excellent working pups! As a high-energy breed, Golden Retrievers do best in a home that will provide them ample access to romp around. Homes with fenced in yards or access to a park or field on a daily basis where they can run and fetch to their hearts content are the best environment for Goldens! These pups, with consistent early socialization, can adapt and thrive to living in a home with other dogs, or pets, and children! They love to play and make great playmates. That being said, their social nature can lead to dependencies on their owners and family. Golden Retrievers may develop separation anxiety if left alone and not properly trained from an early age. Golden Retrievers may also contract heart disease called subvalvular aortic stenosis SAS that with early diagnosis and treatment can allow for a regular life-span. When you are looking to add a Golden Retriever puppy, make sure you are working with a reputable breeder that cares for the health quality of the dogs they breed. Take advantage of that natural drive and eagerness to please by setting foundations at home. Start your puppy a regular daily puppy schedule to create structured routines in the home. Include consistent feeding, nap, play and obedience training times throughout the day to help your Golden pup learn what to expect and build confidence at home. During their puppy training focus on their obedience commands to help your puppy learn to look to you for guidance, build their communication with you, and solidify a trusting relationship! Since Golden Retrievers love to work, positive reinforcement and food rewards will be valuable motivators to get your puppy focused and listening. In-person and online puppy training programs will walk you through how to teach the commands, exercises to help your puppy learn them, and troubleshoot when your puppy needs it! Teach Your Golden Retriever How to Greet New People and Dogs While their open friendly disposition will help your puppy make new friends where ever they go, make sure to teach your puppy the right way to do so! Some overly energetic and friendly pups can get excitable around new people and dogs. That can result in some unwanted whining, lunging, and jumping. When done correctly, socialization helps teach your puppy the proper way to greet people, other dogs and create boundaries. During socialization sessions, you can work with your puppy on those common over-excited behaviors when meeting strangers. And if you're not sure how to do this on your own, hire a local puppy trainer or join an online puppy training school to help set you up for the best success! Do Calming Obedience Exercises With all their high-energy and high-drive, teaching your Golden how to be calm in everyday scenarios will help tame that wild side! Great calming exercises include having your puppy learn to wait for their food bowl and in thresholds each time you enter or leave a space. This also extends to activities like fetch. Goldens are a natal for this! This can be done simply by having your pup drop the toy when they return and pausing for a few moments giving them a chance to settle before throwing it again for them to retrieve. Teach Them to Walk Nicely on Leash Many high-energy pups have a tendency to lunge toward exciting new things! Couple that with a social nature, and you may encounter that your Golden Retriever puppy will start to pull on leash. Focus on teaching them proper leash manners including how to walk in Heel position and how to pass other people and pups without lunging, jumping and excited whining, barking or nipping at them! That can greatly help possible bad encounters with strangers and other dogs while teaching them great habits! Did you recently bring home a Golden Retriever puppy? Are you still planning and not sure what breed fits your lifestyle? Let us know in the comments! Check out these blogs related to puppy training and more! Next up is another thing to do before you bring your puppy home… How To Puppy Proof Your House When puppy-proofing your house, think like a puppy. Crawl around on the floor and take note of what you see. Puppies will chew nearly anything, so make sure that there are no valuables down at puppy-height, or things that could be poisonous to them or be a choking hazard. Make sure there are no open cabinets or pantries where your puppy could get into food. Be careful of small trash cans that could hold some smelly trash that would be enticing to a puppy. And finally, next are a few other random tasks to do before you bring home your new puppy. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! Not exactly. Find a vet. Find the closest emergency animal hospital. This is not something you want to wait until you need it before looking it up and making a plan. Find a list of local poisonous plants and animals. Talk to your vet and do some research so that you know which plants and animals to avoid. Find a puppy kindergarten class. This will help with training, socialization, and general learning how to be a puppy parent. Check your yard or house for any escape routes. This next section will cover everything from what to expect with a puppy, what to do the first 24 hours of bringing them home, how to train them, and more. A week after bringing Oliver home, it was very obvious to me why she asked me that. Puppies are hard work! Their little bladders can only hold it for a few hours, so this is expected. Chewing Puppies will try to chew any and everything. Like every thirty minutes often. Now, for the most important expectation of them all… You will miss puppyhood! Yes, you will miss the sleepless nights and puppy bites. So make sure to take lots of videos and pictures. How would you like to be treated in this situation? Here are some tips to help your puppy get comfortable in their new home. Let your puppy make decisions When you get to your house, set them at your open front door and let them choose to walk inside. Let them explore their new home on their own terms. Letting them make decisions can give them a sense of confidence, hope, and control, and ease into their new home. Limit visitors Now is the time to build the bond with your puppy and let them get to know you, not overstimulate them with a lot of people. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. In general, just keep things low key when you bring them home and let them get used to their surroundings. Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them. They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay , but it also includes life skills like crate training , potty training , how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash. Socialization Socialization is something that is not talked about as much as it should be. It can help mitigate fear and aggression and help them become confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. You can socialize your puppy with other dogs by setting up play dates with gentle dogs that you know are vaccinated and by going to puppy kindergarten. Dog to other living beings includes humans, cats, and other animals. You can socialize them with other people by taking them to a pet-friendly store like home depot, and you can socialize them to other animals by taking a walk by the neighborhood cat with lots of distance between them, so neither animal gets overwhelmed. Dog to stuff is the broadest category, but no less important. When Oliver was very young we were on a walk and a FedEx truck drove by. He had never heard a big truck like that and was terrified. So make sure that your puppy is comfortable with trucks, cars, the garage door, buses, umbrellas, and whatever other objects they may encounter. For instance, if you live in Chicago, get them used to trains, buses and crowded streets. Every day, separate out five special treats for your puppy. For example, you might let your neighbor give your puppy a treat, or maybe you take your puppy to a bus stop and when the bus goes by you give them a treat, or maybe you introduce them to a cow and give them a treat. The treat helps them have a positive experience with these new things and people, plus it helps you easily remember to expose them to lots of these new things. Do this for the first four weeks of their life and before you know it, your puppy will have been exposed to new dogs, people, things, or environments, and will be well on their well to becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppy Raising Mistakes Below are some mistakes that new puppy owners make that could make it harder to train and raise their puppy into a happy, confident adult. Not remembering how young they are Puppies are like little toddlers. Waiting to train your puppy until they have a problem Training your puppy before they have any behavior problems will make life so much easier for you. Forcing things too quickly Things like crate training and potty training take time. Setbacks hurt more than stretching their limits will help, so be patient and take things slowly. Conclusion Golden retriever puppies might just be the best living beings on the planet. However, they are a lot of work and can be quite naughty sometimes. What are Golden Retrievers bred for? Distinctly British, the 1st Baron of Tweedmouth developed the breed crossing his golden colored retrieving dog Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel — these look similar to Irish Water Spaniels. The cross resulted in a dog that was comfortable being on land and water kind of like crocodiles , and robust enough to hunt goose, partridge and even deer. Do Golden Retrievers make good family pets? In fact, Golden Retrievers are one of the most loved dog breeds in the UK. The Kennel Club has a lot more good information and info about them. What does this have to do with how I train my Golden Retriever puppy? But there is a logic as to why knowing the context might help you train your Golden Retriever better: Golden Retrievers love to work. Commonly employed as Guide Dogs, they love having a job to do, which means they will adore training. Anyhow, they will be a breeze to train. They will also do almost anything for your soft words and approval — your praise will work just as well as treats. Because they are so gentle, they are a great fit for families with a variety of lifestyles and ages. They need a good amount of exercise; mental as well as physical. Let us rephrase — a hefty amount of exercise. Besides you and food, being in water is what they love the most! They have a very strong sense of smell, so retrieving or scent work games tend to be the biggest treat for most. Golden Retrievers are the social butterflies of dogs. They love most people, and are not discreet in showing it. You know how us Brits can be about politeness. That being said, make sure you also teach them the wonders of giving things up. It can lead to great things! But it can also be less helpful when they give you a love bite on your arm — give them a toy to carry instead. Shift to some play, and revisit training later — we want training to be associated with fun, and not something they begin to dread. The AKC states that they are incredibly hard workers whose physical strength aids in their ability to perform their duties well. Though their capabilities certainly have a lot to do with intelligence, their excellent job performance can also be credited to their amazing adaptability. After all — they are super friendly! You may not want to trust your Golden Retriever to protect your home. Golden Retrievers are first and foremost devoted to their families. If an immediate threat was obvious, they may certainly step in. But when a stranger comes to the door, the typical reaction of a Golden is to bark until the new person comes to greet them. And before you know it, the new person has quickly become a new friend — no matter who they are! This is in part due to the fact that Golden Retrievers do not do well alone. It is recommended that Golden Retrievers never be left home alone for more than 4 hours at a time. Golden Retriever require a decent amount of both mental and physical stimulation otherwise they can resort to destructive behavior out of boredom. Most of the dogs we come across were not bred to hunt and retrieve. Instead they are bred to work as service dogs which means jumping into a body of water would not be looked highly upon when their job is to guide a blind person or open a door for a person in a wheel chair. However, you might have to teach them some of the nuances of the game of fetch. If your Golden is having some troubles with the game of fetch your might try reading this article on how to teach your dog to fetch. Goldens Are Mouthy Dogs What one person considers mouthy another might consider bitey. Anyhow, Golden Retrievers are mouthy. They are bred to retrieve and carry birds and other game back to their owners. The good news is they are meant to softly carry birds back to their owners without damaging the bird. The bad news is they like to put their mouth on inappropriate things like your arms, hands, and legs. We often joke that Raven likes to shake hands with her mouth. Here are the top 5 dog breeds in Labrador Retriever. My husband and I are bringing home our first puppy in September a goldendoodle and this was super helpful! Emily June 29, , am Thank you so much for this, Jen! I look forward to the post on favorite dog toys! We just got a puppy and, while its only been a week, we are definitely having some issues getting puppy to embrace his crate. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. Also, leave treats in there. Some dogs do better with their crates covered so like drape a blanket over the sides so it feels more like a cave. You might also try placing a t-shirt or something that smells like you in there. Also, leave the door open all the time and praise him if he goes in on his own. Good luck! OH, what a difference! Long after they no longer needed their crates, we kept them and always left the door opened. They would go into them when they were tired, knowing they were in a safe place; their place. Friends always said to us that they would have a dog if it behaved like our dogs. Be consistent. Fun for all of you. I can definitely see how teaching while a puppy can make a huge difference. Looking forward to your next dog related posts :. Reply Link Megan June 29, , pm Ahh thank you for this post! My husband and I are looking into getting a pug puppy soon and these tips are so helpful. Looking forward to reading more posts on this, especially the crate training. Love the tips, we are still trying to stay the course with the UD group classes! Golden are the best! It has been such an eye-opening month with our new puppy. Our other dog is 8 so everything feels brand new. I actually wrote about it in my post for tomorrow, but a puppy is like a baby. My boyfriend and I are getting a golden pup in the fall and while I grew up with the breed I have never trained a pup on my own. We made the choice to get a puppy mostly to instil good habits and behaviour long term. So long story short, I would never put a puppy or young dog or any age in airplane cargo! Reply Link Megan June 30, , pm Good tips! Socializing him right away and crate training him were so key to having an awesome, well-adjusted dog! Reply Link Josi August 20, , pm Hello! Just wondering where you got your goldens? This really helped me figure out what to do when she gets here. Jen May 3, , pm YAY! Our 3rd Golden in about 33 years and know he has some big paws to fill Taegan was wonderful for 14 years. We are so excited!! I have a new English Cream Golden. I feel like I need to work for his affection. Great otherwise! Not super energetic. Bursts of energy followed up by lots of naps but never really interested in walks. First timer here. Your pup could really benefit from basic positive obedience! I would recommend seeking out an experienced trainer in your area to help you as your pup grows! Having a puppy in the home can be fantastic, but you also need to make sure that you can offer it the best as well. She has been really easy to house break. We are excited to bring her home. Thank you for the helpful tips. That is a good idea to make sure that we are committed to doing the work to train this dog. We do really want him to be well trained. Thanks for the tips! Thank you so much for this super informative post! Reply Link Jen January 22, , pm I always made sure she went before we got to the gym and walked her frequently. Meghan January 29, , am Thank you so much for the reply!! We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Goldens are great dogs but like any dog, they can only know what you teach them. Great article!! Kathrinne May 5, , am Hi Jen, how old are your puppies when you let them go out? Jen May 5, , am What do you mean? Reply Link Carly September 8, , pm Thank you so much for your article! What would your input be? Do you think they would focus on each other more than their humans? Would 2 puppies be so much more difficult than 1? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Love the name Zoey!! Any tips to Prevent that?? Reply Link Christine November 1, , am About to get golden 3. Learning all over about everything. Reply Link Jen November 1, , pm It is like starting over again but you will figure it out! Every pup is different but be patient and consistent! This is my first large dog breed so a little nervous. I read your post and you give wonderful tips that I will follow. Please let me know if it is safe to put a flea collar on the puppy. Thank you. Reply Link Jen January 29, , pm I would consult with your vet to see what they recommend for flea prevention and treatment. Also, about the scratching. It could be due to something else like an allergen outside. I have not had a dog in 3 years because I lost my last one in a painful way for me and I am afraid to get another one. I am now ready to get one and this page has helped me prepare for my new puppy. I am a 74 yr old male in pretty good shape no health issues, and retired so I should be around a while to look after a dog. My wife passed about four months ago so I guess I am looking to fill a void. I live in a single family home and have plenty of time to spare. Thanks Reply Link marion duffield April 14, , am I am picking my pup up in 2 weeks! This is the best AND most realistic article I have read about training…. Puppies are intense but so much fun. And wow, that is going to be an adventure! Reply Link Theresa April 30, , am Do you have suggestions about golden retriever puppy biting? We got ours at 7 weeks. She is now .How do we stop her from snapping and biting? She is smart and loving. The biting has been rough though. Can you help? But I love dogs soooo much. This info is everything to me. I love this post Soo much. Thanks a ton. You left puppy in car? Or what? Reply Link Madeline October 31, , pm I am picking up my 7 week old golden in 2 days! I am so excited! How did you go out taking him places before he had his full shots? I want to socialize him, and of course potty train him immediately, but obviously there are risks. Whats your take on this? So the whole crate training thing is not going so well. She hates it. Emily Camalo April 2, , pm Hi! Really appreciate you sharing all of this advice! It was super valuable. Reply Link Julie April 11, , am Loved your comments. I have a 9 week double doodle. I have crate trained since day 1 and she has been really good, day 1 upset for a couple of minutes. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no. Any ideas? Regards Reply Link Stephanie January 25, , am Really great info, thank you for your article. Our puppy arrives in 5 days and we have been preparing for months. Your advice is. Very helpful. Blessings to you.
