That can mean two things — they will always be happy to see you and that being alone can be challenging for them. It gives them confidence and teaches them to view the world in an optimistic way. Here are some puppy socialization exercises to do with your Labradoodle. Let your Labradoodle Puppy Explore the Yard The yard is a great way to introduce your puppy to the great outdoors. They will also get used to walking on different types of surfaces such as your tiled, wet lawn or open flower beds. To get them there, here is a quick exercise you can run through: Exploring different surfaces exercise Have plenty of treats ready. Only use safe surfaces, nothing too slippery. Gather surfaces such as: A piece of carpet A large tray with a thin layer of water A large piece of tin foil or cardboard, something that makes a noise. Put the surfaces out on the floor and let your puppy investigate. Let them take their time and go at their own pace. In our experience Labradoodles are quite food motivated, and you can probably use a low or medium value treat for this. Teach your puppy their name One of the first things your puppy will learn from you is their name. Fortunately, teaching a Labradoodle puppy their name is rather simple. Pretty easy, right? Practice this a few times everyday until they start flipping their head at you every time you call their name. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same name too! Teach your puppy to sit Labradoodle training is often started by teaching them how to sit. We call this a marker word. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. Recall — How to teach your Labradoodle puppy to come back when called Your puppy should have a good grasp of their name by now, which should make recall training pretty straightforward. Pun intended. How to do it You will need plenty of those high value treats and your best cheery voice. Call your puppy only once! This is super important as you want them to learn that their name only has to be called once for them to react to it. How to do it Get your puppy excited by showing them their favorite toy and making it come to life by waving it around. Once they are interested in the toy, throw it a short distance away from you. With that lovely singing voice of yours, encourage them to bring it back to you. When they do, swap the toy in their mouth for another identical toy. Repeat about 5 times and practice everyday. Prevention of Resource Guarding This part of Labradoodle training is important — it will prevent resource guarding by teaching your puppy how to give up items willingly. Resource guarding is this thing that happens when dogs are unwilling to give up items back, or when they get protective over something from humans or other dogs. From the training tips above, preventing resource guarding always comes down to a good swapping. Resource guarding starts when we force our dogs as puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. To avoid that, resist your temptation to reach deep inside their mouths to get whatever it is they have. Ultimately, we want our puppies to be willing to give things up when we need them to. What we really mean is care, handling, health and grooming. Start by just showing them the brush and running it over them with the apartment side so they get used to the sensation minus the bristles. Hand Touch and Handling If you handle your puppy too roughly or grab at them, not only are they going to have a bit of a fright, but it could make them feel scared about being touched in the future. Use plenty of treats, and remember to stop if they walk away. Touch should be a pleasant thing not forced. Week 2 — Training your Labradoodle puppy Week 2 already! If you are not ready or able to devote the time and money, then now might not be the right time for you to consider getting a labradoodle puppy. Labradoodles are sociable creatures and love being with people and other dogs. To leave a labradoodle home on his own all day is not fair on this naturally affectionate dog who enjoys being with others. As with all dogs, some may become badly behaved or even destructive if they are left alone for too long. Labradoodles are intelligent dogs that are very trainable, but they need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep occupied. They often want nothing more than to please their owners. But if you leave them on their own for long periods, then they may find their entertainments, and that may be destructive. If you are out at work all day, then labradoodle are not the dogs for you. Standard Labradoodles, in particular, can be boisterous and mischievous. If you are out at work all day, then consider getting a breed that is not so emotionally dependent on humans and also survives better without much attention. Labradoodle thrive on interaction. Getting a puppy is a long-term commitment. So, before getting a labradoodle puppy, ask yourself some questions: Do I have enough time? In the first few days after leaving his mother and litter-mates, your puppy will feel very lonely and afraid. You and your family will have to spend time with him to make him feel safe. For the first few days, you will need to be around all of the time to help your puppy settle into his new home. It also enables you to bond with him. After that, you will need to spend time house-training and good behavior training. You will have to make time every day for exercise. Exercise is essential as many behavioral problems are a result of a lack of exercise. You will also have to feed your labradoodle daily, in fact, several times a day with a young puppy. Your puppy will require regular grooming. Some Labradoodles do not shed hair, but all of them need regular brushing to stop their hair from matting. How long can I leave my Labradoodle alone? There is a lot of debate among the labradoodle owners regarding this question. It is very common for them to follow you from room to room, especially at the beginning. Labradoodles are amiable dogs and often do well with another labradoodle, which is why some owners have more than one. Dogs are pack animals. Their natural state is to be with their pack. Being alone is not natural for any dog. So how long can you leave your dog alone? In the UK, a rescue organization would not let anyone adopt a dog if they intend to leave the dog alone for more than four or five hours a day. Dogs left at home alone all day become bored. In the case of Labradoodles that are highly dependent on the company for their happiness, they might become sad and depressed. A lonely labradoodle may display signs of unhappiness by making a mess in the house, being destructive, or misbehaving when you return home. You should never leave a labradoodle alone for longer than five hours maximum. Labradoodles have smaller bladders than humans. So, they will need to go out to empty their bladder every four to five hours. Is my home suitable for a Labradoodle? If you have decided to get a puppy, then choose the one that will fit in your living conditions. If you live in a small apartment of a high rise building, then a standard labradoodle would not be the right choice. They love bounding around and are happiest when they have lots of exercise and entertainment. If your home is small, then out of three types of labradoodle, the miniature would be the most suitable. Also, if you have less time to devote to your dog, then chose a mini labradoodle as they require less exercise than a medium and standard labradoodle. You may also need to consider: Labradoodles and Children A puppy will grow into a dog, which will become a part of your family for many years to come. If you have children, then they will be delighted to have a labradoodle. You will need to make sure that your puppy gets enough time to sleep. Sleeping is crucial to puppies just as it for babies. So if you have young children, then make sure the puppy receives its sleep and does not get annoyed by them. One of the reasons some Labradoodles end up in the rescue centers is that the owners are unable to cope with the demands of small children and a dog. Remember that dogs are very hierarchical. In other words, there is a pecking order they follow. There will always be one person that the puppy will regard as a pack leader. It is usually the person who feeds him or spends the most time with him. Puppies will often regard children as being on their level and consider them as a playmate. So they might chase, jump, and nip at them with sharp teeth. This is a typical play for puppies. Be sure to supervise their playtime together and make sure that your puppy does not get too boisterous. Labradoodles and Older People If you are older or have elderly relatives living with you, then the good news is that Labradoodles are very sociable and great company. They love to be involved with people and generally have affectionate temperaments. Bear in mind that for an older person, a larger dog may be too difficult to handle. Especially if they have no training not to jump up at people or if they pull on the leash. If you are older, then you will need to consider your energy level to raise a young pup. Ask yourself if you are fit enough to take your dog for at least one walk a day. Many single adults own dogs. But if you live alone, then it will require a lot of dedication from you to raise a puppy. There will be nobody to share the tasks of daily exercise, grooming, and training. Taking on a dog requires a huge commitment and a lot of your time. If you are out of the house all day as well then it is not really fair to get a puppy or even an adult dog. The dogs feel isolated and sad if they are left alone all day. However, if you work from home, nearby, or are at home all day and you can spend considerable time with the puppy every day, then it can work. All three types of Labradoodles Standard, Medium, Miniature make great companions. Just remember the bigger the dog, the more exercise and space they will need. All Labradoodles demand a certain amount of your time and attention every day regardless of their sizes. Labradoodles with other Pets If you already have other pets in your household, then spend time introducing them gradually to each other. If you already have other dogs, supervised sessions from an early age will help them get along, and chances are they will become the best of friends. Labradoodles bred from working Labradors have strong hunting instincts. Some Labradoodles may take longer to get accustomed to small pets, but others will have no problem at all. The fact that a dog has lived with one cat will not guarantee that it will tolerate a different, strange cat. A lot will depend on the temperament of the individual dog, and at what age he was introduced to other animals. If there is a cat already in the house, a pup may tease the cat, but, in the end, it will learn to live with it. It is much harder for an adult Labradoodle to get used to cats or other animals in the house, especially if he has been chasing cats, squirrels, birds, or any creature smaller than himself on his daily walks. A few things you might want to have with you when you pick up your puppy are a bottle of water, some baby wipes, and a towel or a blanket. If you are meeting your puppy at the airport, your puppy may be thirsty from the trip. We put a frozen dish of water in the crate, but it is usually long gone by the time your puppy arrives. The wipes are needed in case the puppy may have soiled the crate. The towel or blanket also, in case the puppy has soiled the crate, is for you to hold your puppy or to put in the crate. Using a Leash to Bond with Your Puppy When your puppy first arrives to your home, we suggest you keep the puppy on a leash for the first couple of days. Do your best to have the primary caregiver be the main person handling the leash. We also suggest you not have outside visitors to the home for the first couple of days. Give your puppy some time to adjust to her new family first before she meets your world. Your puppy is going to be a little confused at her new surroundings. From the beginning your puppy needs to learn that she is at the bottom, below even the youngest child. She needs to learn who her main leaders are and what the boundaries are in her new home. Labradoodles are people loving dogs! Your puppy will want to bond. Your puppy is smart and will quickly learn that the person attached at the other end of the leash is important to her. Your Labradoodle will look to you for example and comfort. She will learn that you are her source of not only example and comfort, but also food! Using the leash these first few days will help your new puppy learn who to trust and who to please. Other Advantages of Leash Training Your New Puppy Even if you are not holding onto the leash, you can control where she goes easily by stepping on the dragging leash. This is much more comfortable to a dog than having you lunge over her to get her. Keeping her on a leash also allows you to monitor where your puppy is in the house, and help her learn which rooms you would like her to be in and where she is not allowed. Lastly, having her on a leash helps her adjust to the idea of a leash so that she is ready to be trained to heel on a leash. A crate can be a useful and comforting tool or it can be an overused source of misery for your puppy. We suggest using a crate for very short periods of time during the day and for your puppy to sleep in at night. During the day there will come short periods of time where you have a task to do that requires your full attention. While your puppy is still in the house training stage, the crate can be very valuable to you. By putting your puppy in the crate for short amounts of time during the day, say an hour, maybe two, you can accomplish what you must do and also help puppy control her bladder. As soon as you let her out, immediately take her outdoors to relieve herself. Using the crate this way will encourage her to only go to the bathroom where it is appropriate to go. If your puppy is not crate trained already, you will have to work up to the hour or two hour mark. By the time your puppy arrives, she should be able to sleep around 7 hours through the night in a crate. Of course all puppies are individuals and so the time can vary. Your Golden Xpress Labradoodle puppy is used to being in a crate, but she is also used to smelling and hearing her siblings nearby. She may have adjustments to make in her new home because of this. Another factor in labradoodle puppy care is that their little tummies often get upset over the first couple of weeks in their new homes. To help her adjust to your home atmosphere and sleeping during the night, keep her crate in your bedroom at night. Keeping your hand down by the wire door is comforting to her. Responding to her cries with talking or tapping encourages your puppy to cry and whine more. Tapping on the crate lightly is ok, but not in response to her noise making. Another thing to think about with regard to labradoodle puppy care is if your puppy starts to wet her crate, you need to first check and see if her crate is too big. Generally, dogs do not relieve themselves in their sleeping places. If so, either use a smaller crate or block part off with a box. If her crate seems the right size, you may need to take out anything like blankets or soft materials. When your puppy has successfully kept her crate dry for a couple of weeks, try putting the bedding back in. Feeding Your Puppy At first, your puppy will need to be fed 3 times a day. Once they have adjusted, offer food to them all day so they learn not to gorge at meal time, and always make sure your puppy has clean, fresh water available to her. Feed your puppy in a quiet place, free from distractions. Put a good amount of food in her bowl and let her eat as much as she would like. After about 20 minutes or so, remove the food. Repeat this morning, mid-day and evening. It helps keep teeth and gums in better shape than wet food does. DO NOT feed your puppy people food. Your food does not provide the nutrition that your puppy needs. She will choose to have the people food and not eat her own. Feed your dog people food and you will have one unhealthy puppy. That is run your hand from tail to head and look under the black hair found on the back of most German Shepherd Dogs. A sable dog will have a lighter undercolor of grey, red or brown. In essence, each hair has a black tip and the remaining hair shaft is the undercolor. This is the sable color. Viewed from a short distance, a sable dog may appear black, grey or even black and tan. Many black and tan dogs have a sable area around the neck, but this is not the dog's true coat color. A true sable has the undercolor over the saddle area of its back. The term "sable" seems to be German in origin. What the American Kennel Club considers a "grey" dog would be called "sable" in Germany. So, when we are dealing with German bred dogs as is the case today with the tremendous increase of canine imports , we frequently hear the term "sable" referring to most grey dogs. Sable Comes in a Variety of Colors Actually, sable dogs come in a wide variety of colors and pigments. The very darkest dogs are called "black sables" and are considered highly desirable because of the extremely dark pigment they possess. In my experience, black sable dogs often carry the black recessive gene, and can pro- duce solid black puppies when bred to another dog that carries the black recessive. Sable dogs can be used by a breeder to darken the pigment of the next generation. Two sable dogs with similar color will have offspring that are darker than either parent. It should be mentioned here that dark pigment of eyes and coat is highly desirable in the German Shepherd Dog. Some lines carry the dilute gene which causes the coat to be washed out in color. White Shepherds carry the extreme form of the dilute gene, and while they may be very lovely dogs, this lack of pigment is considered undesirable according to the breed standard. Working Bloodlines Most breeders have a pretty clear idea of the type of dog they are trying to produce. The characteristics of this dog usually include the following: 1. Temperament: "A sound mind to do the job" required of the dog. Good hips, elbows, good health and longevity. Freedom from genetic anomalies i. Size and structure within the parameters of the breed standard. Proper coat length and good pigment. While your dog- may get by without some of these attributes, the breeder tries to get them all in every puppy all the time. This is not easy! I placed temperament first on the list. The dog must have a good temperament to do its job in life. Most of the time, the dog's job is simply watching the house and kids. Sometimes, its job is Schutzhund sport, search and rescue work, police K-9 or guide dog. Some dogs wear many hats. But the best temperament is no good with-out a sound body. Two Types of German Shepherd Dogs. In Germany it is generally accepted that there are two varieties of German Shepherd Dog. There are dog bred primarily to excel in Schutzhund sport. These dogs have "working lines" and many famous working lines are Grey or sable. Schutzhund sport demands a fit body, sound mind, and good hips. There are also German dog bred to excel in the showring. These dogs have "high lines" or "show lines. High line dogs are also required to pass a Schutzhund trial, but once titled, show dogs usually leave the Schutzhund field behind. Of course, the best of both worlds is a beautiful show dog that works well. While this is certainly possible, it doesn't happen often. Crossing working lines and show lines can give us pups that do not belong in either world. They are not tough enough to do the work nor pretty enough to compete in the showring. Working dogs do not always produce working dogs. But the chances are far better if every canine relative in the last six generations was able to a pass a Schutzhund trial or herd sheep for a living. German dogs East and West, high lines or working lines must have working titles and hip x-rays before they are bred. We may never know all the facts about this. Some well-known German trainers say that the sable color was never very popular in Germany. As a result, the sable dog had to be very good in order to get breedings. The grey dog of today carry those very good traits. Here is a partial list of well-known working dogs. They are all sable dogs. V-Sagus v. SG-Lord v. Brix v. Bill v. V-Zorro v. SG-Bob v. SG-Artus v. This famous "U" litter also contained Uran. Racker v. SG-Voldo v. VA-Wanko v. Maarue SchH III a "tough" conformation, that is, a dog who excelled in the showring and also excelled in Schutzhund sport. There are many, many more that deserve mention. German Shepherd or Raccoon? The prospective buyer, when presented a well pigmented six- to eight-week-old sable puppy, often asks the breeder, "Why does it look like a raccoon? Their body color is usually the same as their adult undercolor is destined to be. At this stage, these pups typically have a black stripe down the spoke, black around the eyes, and a single black ring around the tail. This bizarre color scheme is only around a few weeks. The pups soon get progressively darker and more German Shepherd-like until they finally reach their adult coat. Unfortunately for the hardworking breeder, this "raccoon" color phase arrives just about the same time pups are usually ready to be sold. No one can blame a novice for wondering if the breeder is "on the level," or if some local Don Juan didn't slip in and visit "mom" in the dark of night. It is helpful if you have several sable dogs about the place and their puppy pictures to prove that this metamorphosis does in fact take place. But, more often than not, the breeder is left in the rather pathetic position of saying to the buyer, "Look, trust me. They get darker! Black sable pups are almost solid black when born, then the color starts to fade. Red sables can have a brilliant red undercoat, and are born a bit lighter, with that black stripe already in evidence. Check the parents. If the dam and sire are dark, the pups will usually be as dark, if not darker. Other signs of exceptional pigment are black toes "muddy feet" in the lingo , a black mask and black appearing on the front of the leg running down towards the feet. Dark eyes are tough to be sure of in a pup, as the eye color changes along with the coat color. If you are dealing with a Fairly dark set of parents, the eyes should be no problem. This "type" of dog has a great deal to offer the breed. The DDR dogs were ruthlessly culled for good hips. Extensive records were kept on stud dog progeny, which included missing teeth, long coats, undescended testicles, and temperament problems. These records are available to us today, and while not perfect, they do offer a breeder a wealth of information. A breeder friend of mine refers to the DDR dogs as "muddy water dogs. Some breeders, myself included, fear the attributes of this valuable gene pool will be diminished or lost altogether now that Germany has been reunified. Many DDR dogs whose blood-lines are available in this country are dark grey or black sable dogs. A Shepherd of Another Color There is nothing wrong with having a color preference when shopping for a pup. There are many German Shepherd breeders in this country and a buyer has a host of colors to choose from. But there is a great deal more to breeding a good dog than shooting for your favorite color. Don't overlook the Shepherd of another color! The breeder who has sable dogs, given today's market, has good reason for breeding them.
