A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. We are a small breeder of exceptional companion, multi-generational Australian Labradoodle Puppies. We are located in the central Florida area, minutes away from Orlando and very accessible via all of the major central Florida highways. All of our litters are hand raised in our home, never in a kennel. Our puppies are born in our master bedroom or bathroom, where they remain until they are three and a half to four weeks old. During this early period, we begin using puppy culture techniques in order to help raise very confident, well balanced puppies. At just over three weeks, we introduce a designated potty area, which they often begin finding within a couple of days, we also introduce solid foods at this same time initially goats milk, then a few days later we begin adding raw food. Later they are moved into our main living area, where they are exposed many new sounds, sights, textures and experiences in preparation for joining your family. The majority of our parent dogs share a home with one of our incredible guardian families. Virtually all of our guardians have come to us by way of referral from our existing guardian families - we'd like to think that is indicative of a very positive relationship. By implementing our guardian family team, our mom and dad dogs often live as the single pampered pet of their household. This is consistent in maintaining great family dogs - likely one of the reasons that you are considering an Australian labradoodle puppy. Our guardians are very hands on with the shaping of your future puppy, sometimes even assisting during the birthing process and later with weekly visits to their home - this is good for our momma dogs, their families and of course our puppies. Our visits allow our pups weekly car rides from week one, as well as early handling and socialization in a very safe and controlled environment. Our parent dogs are rigorously health tested prior to being considered for breeding and assessed for their temperament. We have been working with most of our lines for over fourteen years and have continued to refine them. When we give consideration to using outside lines, we are very attentive to the same qualities we seek in our parent dogs. While the majority of our litters are medium in size, we do occasionally offer mini doodles as well as standards. We tend to specialize and be known for our red and chocolate labradoodle lines, but also produce a great variety of other colors and patterns. Thank you for visiting our website! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. We look forward to becoming part of your happily furever after! Page 8 Hurley the Boxer puppy at 4 months old; Hurley looks a lot like Bruno. On one of the first warm days of the spring season Bruno the Boxer enjoys sitting outside in the sun. Later Bruno decides it's time to also warm up his underside. His father is a very tall, confident male and his mother is a very gentle and attentive female. Ramsey is very attached to his family and whines at the window when my husband goes to work or when my daughter gets on the school bus. He is also very gentle to my year-old daughter. He often falls asleep with the children on the rug in the family room. He needs to be out! He loves to play fetch and leaps over fallen trees in the woods. He walks 3x a week and plays with the kids or ball for the remaining week days. Ramsey loves people and children. He becomes excited when extended family members visit and sits in their lap so that they won't leave. We love him very much. He also doesn't realize that he's 70 pounds of pure muscle and tries to be a lap dog like a Yorkie! Sadie loves this football; she plays tug-o-war with it. In this picture she had been holding it in her mouth for the longest time. Lacy Ann Price the Boxer at 11 years old Frank the white Boxer 7-month-old Daria with her tongue hanging out Caesar the brindle Boxer at 9 months old Simba the white Boxer puppy at 4 months old Simba the white Boxer at 7 months old. I think he's about 7 years old, but I'm not sure. Jordan is a very special dog. Like a lot of dogs, Jordan was rescued from a very bad situation. He was extremely emaciated, he had no hair, covered in parasites, and extremely afraid of everything. He could barely walk when I got him. I have owned him for about 7 months now, and he has all his hair back too much, actually , has gained a lot of weight, is MUCH happier, but most importantly he is no longer afraid of people. With spending a ton of time with his socialization , training , and guidance , he is now a well-balanced dog. I don't exactly know what happened to him before me, but it doesn't matter anymore, anyway. Jordan did have all sorts of bad behaviors at first due to his neglect which included: excessive barking, digging, pulling, jumping, etc. Typical "bad dog" behavior. But with all the walks and adventures we go on he is not only well-balanced, but truly happy. I am his "Guardian Angel. He gives hugs and kisses. He is my suction-cup when we are outside together; he has to be by me always. I love it! He is happiest when the whole family is out in the backyard playing together. He is very much a part of our family, even stays inside now, after some time housetraining. He was never aggressive toward anything or anyone. He loves his "girlfriend"! My other Boxer Baby Girl who also is a rescue. She was rescued at 2 years old and is now a whopping 8 years old. A few months after losing another rescue of mine I was really considering adopting another dog because I needed some form of protection living in a rough neighborhood. One day, while I was sitting in my living room my neighbor knocked on my door, "Hey, there's a Boxer outside running around crazy, and the owner doesn't want it. OK, I will take a look! I saw that happy face and that wiggly butt, I was in love! I said yes! Little did I know what I was getting myself into. This dog was an absolute nightmare, lol! At first she barged out of every door, broke every collar, leash, chain, tie-out cable we bought! She was horrified of so many things. She had separation anxiety really bad, so bad she made herself bleed to get out. After a very long and bumpy road we finally accomplished what I dreamed: "the perfect dog. She is so well-behaved and excellent mannered. She even stops on a dime if I tell her to. She is my everything! I have taught her a lot, but not as much as she has taught me. She taught me patience, understanding, love, devotion, and so much more. She has won the hearts of everyone she has met AND has even made a dog lover out of the people who were "scared" of dogs or "hated" dogs. I take her everywhere with me. She loves her bath time, especially playing "torro" with the towel during drying time! She hugs me, and she gives me the gentlest kisses. She has no aggression toward anything or anyone, she loves everything! This dog is my entire world. She always rests her head on my lap and gives me those soulful puppy dog eyes. Unlike any other dogs I've ever had she and I communicate mentally or something. She and I just know what each other want. Before I got her she had never been out other than a quick potty break on a 4-foot lead. She also had been through a lot of owners. She's great inside now, though! With all that work she's perfect inside! I can leave a whole plate of food on the floor for hours while I'm not in the room and she won't touch it. No accidents, never chewed on anything, very quiet. She's my angel. Her favorite activity would be eating. She's loves food. This is a dog who has taught me to be strong, all good things are worth fighting for, never give up, and you never get the dog you want, always the dog you need. I cannot say I follow his methods, because I have been training my dogs this same way before I ever heard of him. I also train therapy dogs, and guide dogs. Not certified, or anything. I rescue dogs and train them to help those who don't want to go through the certified Therapy Dog Associations for such reasons as waiting lists. I thank god for Cesar, though, because he is one of the few proving that Pit Bulls can be rehabilitated, and showing the world everything they need to know to save their dog's life. My love for Baby Girl made me fall in love with Boxers period, which led me into rescuing another Boxer, so I guess in a way she's saved two lives. Just like me. She's been through a lot, and has come very far. Most important thing she didn't give up on me, either. So, this photo is a dedication to Baby Girl so the entire world can hear Baby Girl's message of never giving up on your dog, because they will never give up on you. Thank you for the strength, you have given me Baby Girl, and I hope together we can save lives: the lives of dogs. She's a Boxer in every sense of the word. Callie the Boxer full grown getting some sun though the window blinds. He is pictured with Abby left who is 3 years old and 68 pounds 32 kg. Boss is a Boxer from working lines and Abby is from North American show lines. See the difference?

These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! Our Bernedoodles are from excellent bloodlines and all Pedigree information traces back to their AKC lineage. Our Dams and Sires have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. These dogs will have a higher success rate for non-shedding, and are recommended for families with allergies. F1 Bernedoodles all have loose wavy coats that are typically minimal to light shedding, while F1B Bernedoodles coats can be loose wavy just like the F1 or curly and there are both coat types within the F1B litter. The F1B Bernedoodle is typically minimal to non-shedding. The coat of a Bernedoodle can vary from straight, loose wavy or curly. An F1 Bernedoodle will have a loose wavy coat, while an F1B Bernedoodle litter has both curly and loose wavy coats within the litter. The coat colors of Bernedoodles can vary based on the color genetics of the parents. We will also have Parti Bernedoodles. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. The Bernedoodle can be independent and does great being with family engaging in play, then happily laying on their own with a toy. It is still unknown how long Bernedoodles will live as it is a newer cross. The expected lifespan is hoped to be years. As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. Look for a puppy kindergarten class locally or join the AKC S. Puppy Program , training based on positive techniques. You do not have to be an AKC purebred puppy to participate in their S. Puppy Program. Find a class here. This is a great place to start socializing and training. A well-socialized, well-trained Bernedoodle makes a wonderful family companion. Early socialization and training establishes those lifetime bonds between the family and puppy as these programs teach you how to communicate with your new puppy and get started on the right foot. South Dakota is a great place to live with an English bulldog. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in South Dakota? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Send us an email or give us call .If approved to adopt one of our puppies you are welcome to place a deposit to hold until your puppy is ready to go home. Greetings from the Wysongs! I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease which affects dogs and other mammals in the United States and other parts of the world. This disease is transmitted by mosquitos. It does not spread from dog to dog so it is safe to adopt a heartworm-positive dog. Heartworm disease can be resolved and most dogs respond well to treatment and can live long and happy lives! If the dog you have chosen to adopt is heartworm positive, we will have you speak to a medical team member prior to completing the adoption. The team member will be able to answer any questions you may have, help you learn more about this disease, and what the treatment will entail. Heartworm disease can be prevented. Due to the high density of the disease and mosquitos in our area, all dogs in your household should be on heartworm prevention. Visit www. How do I adopt a pet in Foster Care? This comes at no extra cost to you. Separation anxiety is when a dog experiences stress and even panic when left alone, and unfortunately, it can happen with Golden Retrievers. For your dog, all that stress can have a negative effect on their overall wellbeing and health. Separation anxiety is also surrounded by a lot of misinformation and myths, which can lead you astray. This article will rely on the most up-to-date information and science-based facts about separation anxiety to help you understand the issue and help your dog feel better about being home without you. What is Separation Anxiety? Separation anxiety is when a dog becomes distressed when left alone, even for short periods of time. It is a panic disorder and can only be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Separation anxiety is not just your dog being dramatic or your dog showing how much they love you. If left untreated, separation anxiety can escalate and you might notice more extreme signs as time goes on. What Causes Separation Anxiety? The cause of separation anxiety is not entirely known, though more recent research suggests some dogs may be genetically predisposed to the disorder. It could also be triggered by a traumatic experience when left alone, such as a burglary or a fire. Some dogs can even be triggered by a scary experience unrelated to being home alone, such as being attacked by another dog. Additionally, a big life change could also spark separation anxiety, such as moving to a new home, the loss of another dog in the family, or their owners having a baby. Exposure to frequent, long absences by their owner can also lead to separation anxiety. If a dog was never taught how to be home alone, that could also contribute to separation anxiety. Their genes set them up for separation anxiety, and something like a move or a scary experience triggers it. You may come across information that says separation anxiety is caused by owners who spoil or pamper their dogs too much. There is actually no evidence to suggest that is true. Neither does allowing them on furniture. Or giving them cuddles and attention. You might have tried things like giving your dog a stuffed kong to chew, diffusing essential oils, playing music, or leaving the TV on to keep them company. These kinds of quick fixes almost never work. The reality is that treating separation anxiety is a process, but it is possible for your Golden to learn how to be okay while home alone. Talk to Your Vet or a Veterinary Behaviorist If you suspect your dog has separation anxiety, you should first consult your veterinarian. Medication can sometimes help resolve the issue more quickly, as it helps your dog feel less anxious about your absence. A veterinary behaviorist is a vet with additional specialized training to effectively treat behavior issues. You can use this directory to find a veterinary behaviorist local to you. A quick note — an animal or dog behaviorist is not the same as a veterinary behaviorist, as the former cannot prescribe medication. As you work on training, they will be able to be left alone for gradually longer periods of time, but you never want to push them beyond what they can handle, as this will set you back. If you keep leaving your dog alone and they keep being triggered by it, they will never learn how to be home alone. There is a myth out there that if you just keep leaving them alone, eventually they will get over it. Usually, the opposite is true. The more you leave them alone, the more and more panicked they become. Of course, never leaving your dog alone is not a long-term plan. The goal is to get your dog to a point where they can be home alone and feel just fine. Ensuring they are never left alone is just a temporary thing while you teach your dog the skills they need to be home alone successfully. I have to work and run errands. How can I never leave them alone? Golden Retrievers love spending time out in nature, and long walks in nature can be a great stress reliever. Exercise will not cure separation anxiety, but an under-exercised dog with lots of pent-up energy may be even more nervous and stressed out when left alone. Training basic obedience and fun tricks can be a great mental stimulation for Goldens. Make sure they have plenty of safe options for chewing , which is natural stress-relieving for dogs and Goldens especially can be very mouthy. You slowly increase the intensity of the trigger in this case duration so that your dog becomes desensitized to it and is no longer panicked. Full disclosure, this can be a slow process. Often, you need to start with simply being out of view of your dog before you progress to actually leaving the house. You will also need to desensitize your dog to your departure cues, such as grabbing your keys or purse, putting on your shoes, or opening or closing doors. A Certified Dog Behavior Consultant or a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer will create a customized plan for your Golden Retriever and will guide you through the process every step of the way. Leverage Technology for Your Training Since you will be eventually leaving the house during the training process, it can be really helpful to use a camera to keep an eye on your dog. If you leave and then come home, you have no idea what your dog was doing in your absence. Then you can know for certain if they were relaxed or panicked, which will help you adjust your training plan accordingly. How to Prevent Separation Anxiety Maybe you have a Golden Retriever puppy or a newly adopted adult Golden and you want to help prevent separation anxiety. Preventing this issue is actually quite similar to treating the issue: exposure to short absences, gradually increasing the time without the dog ever becoming stressed. Remember that Golden Retrievers really love being with their humans and so this is a learned skill. This online course from trainer Sarah Stremming, called Happy Crating, is an excellent resource for teaching your puppy or dog how to be okay in your absence. The process in the course keeps your Golden Retriever feeling safe and comfortable at every step, so your absence never becomes a trigger for panic. This course is not for dogs that already have separation anxiety, but is great for preventing it for puppies or recently rescued adult dogs. The reality is that crating does not solve separation anxiety, and it might even make it worse. In fact, your dog might hurt themselves in an attempt to escape the crate. Some Golden Retrievers may end up doing best in a crate, and a crate will be part of their separation anxiety resolution plan. So simply putting your pup in a crate is not going to resolve separation anxiety. Usually, it gets worse as time goes on because the dog builds up a bigger history of traumatic experiences with every time you leave. Your Golden Retriever needs help to learn how to be okay in your absence, rather than being thrown in the deep end again and again. The truth is that this might work, but it might not. You should only get a second dog if you truly want one, not because you think it will cure your first dog of their separation anxiety. Because there is a good chance your dog will still be just as distressed by your departures even with a new friend around. Or what if the second dog tragically passes away before your first dog? Is it Separation Anxiety or Something Else? Sometimes a Golden Retriever might show signs of separation anxiety, but in reality, there is a different issue at play. Remember that only a veterinary professional can diagnose separation anxiety, and if you suspect that your dog may have separation anxiety, set up an appointment to talk about it. It can help to set up a device to film your dog while you are away so you can see their behavior while you are away. Here are some other common issues that you can rule out when trying to determine if your dog might have separation anxiety. Medical Issues Some medical issues can create behavior that might seem like separation anxiety. A urinary tract infection or a gastrointestianl issue might cause potty accidents, which is a common thing for dogs who have separation anxiety. Cognitive disorders might also mimic some aspects of separation anxiety. Confinement Distress Sometimes a dog is totally fine with being home alone, but they experience intense anxiety around being confined in a small space, such as a crate. Boredom Some dogs become destructive because they are bored and have energy to burn. Barking can also stem from boredom. Ensuring your dog is well-exercised before you depart, and leaving some durable puzzle toys for them to work on can help. Noise Phobia If your dog has a noise phobia, such as to storms or a smoke alarm, they may exhibit behavior that is very similar to separation anxiety. The only difference is that for a noise phobia, the cause of the panic is sound, and for separation anxiety, the cause is your absence. This is why we love Golden Retreivers so much. So how can you tell if your dog is just a little bummed that you have to leave or if they have full-blown separation anxiety? If your dog shows any of these behaviors, definitely talk with your vet about separation anxiety: Persistent crying, barking, or howling Destructive behavior Trying to escape a crate or house Drooling, shaking or pacing Self-injury But sometimes your dog might just be a little antsy or down that you are away. You might be worried that they have separation anxiety. Puppies do not come with pre-installed crate or home alone skills. They generally do not come naturally to dogs. Puppies are baby animals who are small and vulnerable and being alone is scary. It makes sense that they vocalize when left alone, whether in a crate, behind a gate or in a room. This is a process and every puppy will progress at different speeds. Remember that confinement distress is a separate issue from separation anxiety, and so you may need to work on them separately. Again, this online course called Happy Crating from dog trainer Sarah Stremming is an amazing guide to teach your puppy how to be calm and content while crated and with you out of sight. Share 0 Shares Golden Retrievers are one of the most wonderful dog breeds, and they make great family pets. They make great companions for children, and they are always happy to enjoy a walk, a hike, or playing fetch with their owners. Sometimes Golden Retrievers can experience separation anxiety. This is not a condition that impacts all Golden Retriever dogs, but it is more common in high-drive dog breeds. When your dog is experiencing separation anxiety, they might escape the backyard, chew up items in your home, or even have accidents in the house while you are away. If you have a dog that is displaying signs of this anxious behavior, you might be really worried about them. Thankfully, there are some key symptoms to look for and some really effective tactics to help you to treat the problem before it gets out of hand. Separation anxiety is one of the most frustrating conditions for owners to deal with. When you do not know how to handle this anxious behavior, your dog can be destructive, experience health issues , and be impossible to leave at home when you need to run errands. Dogs with separation anxiety can also be hard to leave behind when you head out for vacation or work trips. There are some key signs that your dog is experiencing this anxious condition, and you need to be on the lookout for them if you think that your dog might be starting to display separation anxiety. When you are paying attention to the kinds of behaviors that you are seeing, you can more accurately diagnose your dog with this issue and then start working on treatment. Top 7 Signs of Separation Anxiety in Your Golden Retriever Howling, barking, or whining in excess of normal Having accidents in the house Chewing up or destroying things Drooling, panting, and pacing Breaking through doors or scratching at surfaces or the sides of their crate Escaping bedrooms, backyards, or other spaces Pacing obsessively Many dogs that display separation anxiety behaviors will start out being all right part of the time when their owner goes away. Over time, symptoms can escalate and become very overwhelming to deal with. This is one of the most common reasons for people dropping dogs off at the shelter or giving them away to new owners. Often dogs that have separation anxiety can actually be trained to handle being alone gracefully. This is a process that can take some time, but a trainer can help you create a training plan for your pet that will generate big improvements. There are many ways to try and make your dog more comfortable with their time away from you as well, and you could exhaust these ideas before you seek the help of a professional if you want. Caring for a dog with separation anxiety can actually be easier than you might think. Golden retriever separation anxiety symptoms, image source The root of separation anxiety is the DNA of dog social structures. Dogs are pack animals, meaning that they feel safest and happiest when they are not alone. They view their owners as part of their pack, and their DNA drives them to remain with the pack when in doubt. More confident individuals probably worry when their owners are not home, but they are able to refrain from giving in to anxious behavior when left in the house on their own. Dogs that are less confident might feel very frightened when they are left alone and do everything in their power to get back to their pack. This is like a biological imperative, and that is why this behavior can be so hard to treat and prevent. While many people believe that selective breeding should have removed these drive-in domestic dogs, there are pets that still feel very driven to engage in a pack social structure. When you own a dog that lives alone, you are the only social group that they have access to in order to make sense of their world. When you leave, this can lead to disorientation on the part of a dog that clings tightly to this pack mentality for comfort. This is one of the most misunderstood reasons behind separation anxiety, and the confusion about why the behavior is happening can lead to discipline and other management methods that are not effective. Separation anxiety can be common in elderly dogs as well because their memory can be failing. These dogs might not remember, based on prior experience, that their owners leave and come back all the time. This can be a surprise to people who own a dog that has never exhibited this behavior before and is suddenly showing symptoms in old age. There are various ways that you can tackle the problem of separation anxiety. Understanding if there are secondary causes for the behavior can be important as well. For example, separation anxiety that has started due to the death of a companion pet can be a very different problem to treat than puppy separation anxiety. Always remember not to get frustrated with your pet. They cannot help it that they are afraid when you leave them alone. Being frustrated with them will only make them more upset and more likely to display unwanted behavior. Provide Distraction When your dog is young, or they are only mildly anxious when you leave, you can help them to focus on other things by giving them a toy that will keep them busy. This might be a Kong that is filled with peanut butter, or you might want to put on some music or white noise to help them with sound-related worries. Dogs that have something to do when they are home alone will be much less likely to be upset and start getting into things and destroying things. For dogs that chew when they are left alone, you will want to provide access to toys that can hold up to this demand. Offering a toy that will be broken and ripped up right away will not help your dog to entertain itself for the whole time that you are gone. You will also want to be wary of offering up food as a distraction, as it can be easy to make your dog obese this way. You should also steer clear of rawhide chews as they can lead to blocked intestines and choking. If you are not sure about which kind of food-based toy to offer to your dog, ask your vet what they recommend. There are many toys on the market that are safe for chewing, and that will not cause a medical emergency while you are away from home. Consider a Companion Sometimes dogs just need to have a friend who will be home with them when you are not there. Some people find that even adding a cat to the home makes their dog feel less alone and helps with separation anxiety. You might need to consider getting a second dog so that your first dog can be happy and feel safe when you are away. Companion situations are often the most effective when you have a timid dog that is worried about being without its pack in other situations as well. You will need to pick the companion dog carefully, however, so that there are no fights and other issues when you are not around to supervise. An older dog might not be the best solution for this need as they will be more set in their ways. Make sure that you try integrating any new animal with your existing pet before you commit to adding this new pet to your home. You can create just as many new problems trying to solve the separation anxiety issue if you are not careful. Picking the right companion can make a big difference for many pets that suffer from separation anxiety, and this might be the perfect solution for your needs. Visit the Vet Sometimes anxiety in dogs is so severe that it cannot be treated without the help of your vet. When you feel that you have tried everything without success, you can take your dog to the vet for some further help with the problem. There are many mild yet effective medications on the market that your vet can prescribe for your dog that gets separation anxiety. Armed with some help of this nature, you can help train your dog to feel safe when you are not home. You can also pair this kind of help with items like a thunder shirt. This sense of being cradled reminds dogs of the hugging nature of being with their siblings when they are not fully grown. For many dogs, this is a big help when anxiety strikes. Your vet should be able to advise about the best ways to use these tactics to help with anxious behaviors of all kinds. Invest in a Crate While many people think that crates are mean and make dogs feel trapped, the opposite is true in most cases. Many dogs actually really do feel safer in small spaces. This is because dogs den up when they are in the wild so that they can reduce the chance that they will be surprised by a threat while they are resting or eating. While some dogs do not like crates, many dogs will feel much safer in this smaller space when you are gone. You should make sure that the crate is not big enough that your dog can pace and make sure that you pick one that has a top and is fully enclosed. You will also want to consider putting a towel over the front of the crate to keep your dog from worrying about things it can see outside its crate. Dogs might cry a little when you first put them into the crate, but they will quickly calm down and just go to sleep. This is a really good tool for instilling patience, a calm state of mind, and preventing chewing behaviors that can lead to medical emergencies when you are not at home. Training There are some training techniques that can really help your dog to break free of separation anxiety. Most dogs with this condition will start fretting as soon as you pick up your keys or walk toward the front door. To break this part of the cycle, start picking up your keys but then staying home. You can always walk to the door, open it, and then come back inside frequently. Once you have broken your dog out of the learned reaction they were having to the signs that you were leaving, you can work on the bigger issue. At this stage of the game, tell your dog to sit and stay and then go out the front or back door. Close the door and wait for a few moments, then come back inside. Work on this until your dog can be calm while you are out of their sight. You can also do this work in a spare bedroom or other areas of your home that has a door to place them behind. Over time, you can easily increase the timeframe in between when you leave and come back. Dogs learn by repetition, so this is a task that will take an investment of time. Exercise and Attention Sometimes separation anxiety behavior is not actually from anxiousness about you going away. Some dogs show this behavior because they are not getting enough exercise or attention during the times that they are home. High-drive breeds like the Golden Retriever can need more exercise than other dog breeds do. Dogs need mental stimulation, and they need interaction to feel loved, happy, and secure. When they are not getting enough time to play and get tired, and they feel ignored, they might not handle being away from you gracefully. Most dog owners are busy, and it can be hard to give your dog the attention that it needs each day. Even if you only spend about 20 minutes playing with or walking your dog, you will cut down on their pent-up energy and demand for attention. The attachment that this breed feels for their people is one of the most wonderful things about Golden Retrievers, but it can lead to problems when there is not enough time in the day for them. Consider Doggy Day Care For some dogs, being home alone is just never going to be a very satisfactory option. Thankfully, there are really excellent doggy daycare businesses in almost every city. You should be able to find one of these locations to drop your dog off on days that you have to be gone for a long period of time. This is a great environment for your dog to get love, attention, and time with other animals so that they can have fun while you are away. Some of these locations will also offer one-on-one training services with in-house trainers. You can drop your dog off to be socialized and get some energy out, and they can also get some training that you might not have time to take care of yourself. When you cannot resolve the problems that your dog is having with being alone while you are away, a pet sitter or a doggy daycare might be your best option. Discipline is not really going to be effective when you are trying to treat Golden Retriever separation anxiety. Your dog is likely not in a good mental state for learning any kind of new behavior once they have become upset, and they will not understand why you are upset with them. This is not the kind of behavior that can be resolved with a firm word and a timeout. You will need to remember that dogs that are experiencing separation anxiety are actually afraid that they are being abandoned by their pack. Make sure that you try your best to be patient with your dog when they are not behaving in the way that you want them to. Golden Retrievers are very loving, and they tend to take discipline very personally. You might accidentally create more worry behaviors by trying to make your dog mind rather than by addressing the separation anxiety. You can always seek the help of a dog training professional as well if you need it. There are many people who can come to your home and help you and your Golden Retriever with this problem. Leveraging the skill of experts is always a good idea if you have a dog that is acting out when you are gone. There is no reason to assume that you should be a dog training expert just because you own a dog. Sometimes getting some help makes all the difference in tackling separation anxiety issues. Normally, an anxious Golden Retriever will bark — maybe for a few minutes, other times for hours. Nowadays, that loyalty and closeness is admired by some, but it does create circumstances of great anxiety. While Golden Retrievers are susceptible to this disorder, it is not a guaranteed problem. Most Golden Retriever separation anxiety, well the more severe forms of it, are brought on by stressful experiences. If you obtained your dog from a shelter or rescue centre, they are likely to be more prone than others to separation anxiety. Barking is the most common outcome, separation anxiety can grow exponentially worse and incur a lot more other symptoms like shaking, whining, destructive tendencies, urination and even damage to themselves as they desperately try to reach you. Normally, this will be prompted by a sound or action that your Golden Retriever will recognize as an indication that you are planning to leave. It could be your keys making a noise, or the action of you doing up the laces of your shoes, or even your morning alarm clock call if their anxiety is bad enough. This bond, which has developed between the pet and the owner, causes the separation anxiety when it is left alone. The first step in preventing the growth of separation anxiety among the puppies is to fully wean away from their mother, usually this happens after when they are 8 weeks of age. And it is the time to start training the Golden Retriever, independent from his mother. This is the phase that Golden Retrievers usually spend with their breeder. Once you bring the Golden Retriever your home it is your responsibility to train the puppy to prevent separation anxiety. Care should be taken of number of things to prevent your pet from separation anxiety. This includes things like, leaving your Golden Retriever without any fuss, that is, you must not shower extra love and affection when you are preparing to leave. The same should be done when you come back to your home. Dealing with a dog that has severe separation anxiety can be hard. A part of you feels bad for the Golden Retriever dog, but another grows frustrated that you have problems leaving the house without the dog getting upset. For a start your dog anxiety treatment, make sure your give dog a LOT of exercise. Whenever you have to go out for a long period of time, say few hours, engage your Golden Retriever in vigorous exercise prior to leaving. Once you feel the dog is tired provide calm-submissive energy with food and water and let your pet rest. Then, while the Golden Retriever is in quiet resting mode, leave the place. Additionally, to make your departure less noticeable, decrease the interaction with him before leaving. Another method is use a toy or bone and as a distraction when you slip out the door. Such treats will make it easier for him to forget about their separation anxiety and your absence. For most dogs anxiety will not grow if they can separate your act of leaving with that initial instant of panic. Also, try to give your Golden Retriever something occupy them — a puzzle, some chews, a puzzle. These kinds of bribes will usually dispel the issues that cause severe anxiety, but if your dog is just a little upset, this will help keep them busy long enough to get them over you leaving. Another practice to carry out is to get them used to you leaving. Or, one day, just get up and leave without any warning — without shoes or keys or anything. By changing your routine, and ignoring your Golden Retriever before leaving the house, you should be able to separate the routine from their mind with that sense of panic. Another way to ease Golden Retriever separation anxiety is to provide them with a pal. A friend to play with can be great way to take your Golden Retriever out of otherwise seemingly incurable separation anxiety. Entertainment is something that keeps your Golden Retriever away from separation anxiety, no matter in what form it is available. Lastly, make sure you ignore the dog if he starts to whine or whimper. This is hard to do, but the more attention you give them when they get upset, the harder it becomes. You need to disregard it, and do your best to create a distance between your act of leaving and your Golden Retriever. Conclusion: Do you have time for a dog? Luckily, there are many ways to help your dog with this. The first of which is to make sure you have enough time to dedicate to your dog before you get one. Realistically, how much time do you have? Do you work for 8 hours a day and have a long commute? Will you let your dog sleep in the same room as you? If not then you might only be around your dog for hours a day. If that is the case then can you afford to have a dog walker come over and walk your dog or take your dog to doggie daycare? Perhaps the best scenario is to have a job where your dog can come to work with you. Think carefully about the time you have before you get a Golden Retriever or any dog for that matter. Training: The next, step is training. If you decide that you have the time to dedicate to a dog than training can be a good defense. Training and socialization are super important for all dogs. Training your dog that it is okay to be alone is very helpful. It is best to start this training as soon as possible after bringing a new dog home. Place them in a safe place, create or room. Provide them with a stuffed Kong or another treat-filled toy. Walk away for a few minutes. Be sure to reappear when the dog is not whining or barking for you. If you appear when they start to pitch a fit you will reinforce the fit, and could actually cause separation anxiety. Slowly extend the period of time you are out of view. Return immediately for the first few times. It can be helpful to leave the TV or radio on to provide noise and help your dog be able to believe that you are home. Another thing that can help is to leave an article of clothing that smells like you in the area with your dog. This will provide soothing comfort for your pal. A pajama shirt that you wear all night is a good option. Never make a big deal about when you leave, snuggling or feeling bad over your dog before you go. This will give him a perfect cue to know that you are leaving and he should stress. It is also a good idea to not have a huge party when you get home. This will just reinforce that life is so much better with you and how depend he is on you. Think about your daily routine. Perhaps, you get up, take your dog outside, have some coffee, get dressed for the day, walk your dog, and immediately leave for work. Your dog may start to associate returning from the morning walk with you leaving. The anxiety will then start to build as soon as you return from the walk. Simply changing to walking your dog first thing before anything else may be enough to rock the routine. If you end up staying for a half hour or so after the walk instead of leaving immediately he will not associate coming home from the walk with you leaving. Of course, you have to keep the routine changing every so often. Otherwise, he may notice a new cue like you finishing your coffee or something else that will trigger his anxiety. What if my dog already has separation anxiety? Well, first, you can apply the training and routine change information above. There is also medication that you can get from your vet but I wouldn't recommend it. These medications come with a whole host of side-effects including: Increased or decreased appetite. When you go out the door, you hear frenzied digging at the door frame and barking. You wonder to yourself: why does my golden panic when I leave? Instead, they literally have an anxiety attack. Some have milder symptoms whereas others display much more severe ones. The poor canine literally is afraid that we will never return home again. In order to treat separation anxiety in your dog, professional help from a behaviorist may be necessary. Some dogs are probably showing signs of separation anxiety related to the pandemic. Then, as we suddenly go back to work, some dogs may develop separation anxiety. Unfortunately, many dogs are given up because they have separation anxiety. What Causes Separation Anxiety? There are various theories regarding why a dog develops separation. Something traumatic may have occurred when the dog was alone Workman may have been doing construction nearby and the dog has or develops a noise phobia associated with being alone. A burglary may have taken place in your absence. Or a thunderstorm may have occurred. And the dog associates being left alone with the scary noise and changes in barometric pressure—and the lightning. One of my rescued goldens, Spencer, was fine being left alone. That is, until a violent thunderstorm occurred when I was away working. The storm was so bad that we lost power for days. Even worse, I came home after about five hours to Spencer stressed and drooling. He also had broken a tooth while trying to get out of his crate. He loved his crate before this. A dog may have had too many transfers to various owners or may have been abandoned Some dogs may have been relocated and been stressed by that. This sometimes occurs when an owner gives up a dog to a rescue or shelter. Then, the dog is placed in another home. He may have developed bonds with the people in the home. And he may be used to a certain routine. Then, in his view, his world is suddenly turned upside down. This happened to a dog I adopted. Mikey was a Lhasa apso who was abandoned on the street. I volunteered at the shelter that took him in. In the beginning, before I could work with the issue, Mikey would whine and bark—and even dig at the door—when I left. Luckily, his symptoms of separation anxiety disappeared after I did a lot of working with Mikey on the issue. These dogs have over-bonded to their person. Dogs are creatures of habit. Many adapt well to changes, but others may find any variations from their routine to be very distressing. Our canine friends also form bonds with family members and other animals within the household. Any change may set off some dogs to develop separation anxiety. What Are the Signs of Separation Anxiety? There are numerous behavior changes that a dog may exhibit when he has an episode of separation anxiety. Some may be mistaken for other behavioral or medical problems. Usually the items destroyed may be where people enter or exit. Or where a dog may escape. Dogs with separation anxiety may dig or chew around door or window frames in a frantic attempt to escape and reach the departed owner. A lab mix I trained was a rescue who had been transferred to various homes before the owners who hired me got him. He was a very sweet dog. But when his owners left, he went into full-blown panic mode. He even crashed through a window onto a deck to try to reach his owners one time when they left him alone. But he was obviously in a lot of distress. This sweet dog had a severe case of separation anxiety. It took months of working with the family and dog until he could safely be left alone. But it was worth it. The dog may salivate and drool These are stress signals. But it can be one of the signs that he has that distress. But some may express their anxiety by urinating or defecating in the house when alone. Trembling or shaking may be a sign of distress The dog may be overly excited when you return home Most dogs are happy and may jump around, wag their tail, and even squeal when we get home from work or an errand. The dog may show excessive signs of distress when you do your normal routines before departing. Dogs with separation anxiety often watch our departure cues. And they usually become anxious. Most of us have routines before we go out. We may take a shower, brush our teeth, get dressed, put on our coat, and pick up our keys. Meanwhile our dog may pace, salivate, whine, tense up, or show other signs of distress. A dog with severe separation anxiety may attempt to escape He may try to get out of windows or doors to reach you. Some tell-tale signs are scratch or chew marks at the door or window frames or on the door. Sometimes what appears to be separation anxiety is another behavioral or medical problem. So, in determining whether something that your dog does is really separation anxiety, other problems must be ruled out. Young dogs usually have a lot of excess energy to burn. Does your pup have separation anxiety? Go over your routine. If so, it may just be a house training problem. Then, re-house train your pup. Or, if you have house-trained your dog, it may be a physical problem like worms or a urinary tract infection that are causing his house training indiscretions. Then, you look down at your feet and see it: a puddle of urine. Your dog may have just urinated out of the excitement of the moment or may have submissively urinated when you reached to pet him. So determine whether he usually does this in front of you in other settings, not just after your longer departures. Urine marking You find urine on the floor, on the side of your favorite chair or on the leg of the kitchen table. You want to determine whether this is a sign of separation anxiety. Medications Some medications may cause a dog to defecate or urinate more than normal. Environmental triggers A dog may bark, whine, or howl because of something that occurs while left alone, unrelated to separation anxiety. There are many things you can do to help your dog who has separation anxiety. It can be successfully managed though to the point that no manifestations of anxiety occur. Even some vets have a lot of success treating such distress. Some of the following actions may help a dog with separation anxiety: Make sure that your dog has a sufficient amount of exercise before you depart. Generally, young dogs require more exercise than older ones. And dogs from the working, hunting, herding, and terrier breeds usually have high drive and require a lot of exercise. A walk, fetching, or playing with a comparable dog may help meet his needs. Young goldens and labs should have energy to burn. They really need a lot of exercise in order to not engage in destructive, unwanted behaviors. Make sure that your dog has enough obedience training Dogs who have obedience training can still suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs with severe separation anxiety may not engage in them, but those with milder cases may. Also, giving a dog some activity toys will help relieve boredom. So you can then rule out problem behaviors like destructive ones or excessive vocalizations. I recommend Extreme Kongs frozen overnight stuffed with pate dog food. Treat-dispensing toys and puzzle toys can also help. Keep departures and greetings uneventful Some experts theorize that making a big fuss when you leave your dog or when you return can cause or exacerbate separation anxiety. My liittle baby pup will be fine. The same is true when you get home. My dogs have learned the routine. When I return, I just give them a quick pet and take them out to potty, matter of factly. Leave an item like a towel with your scent on it Some dogs may be comforted by items with your scent on something. You may put it on his bed. This may help in only milder cases of separation anxiety. Others have various essences that lower stress. As with any such product, first check with your vet before using it. Some have natural herbal components that have calming properties. I actually teach my dogs how to relax on the cue. Desensitize your dog to your departures This is usually best done under the direction of a qualified dog trainer or behaviorist. If you do the behavioral work too quickly, it can even worsen the problem. Departure cues. In one of the behavioral exercises, you may start by using your departure cues—then not leave. You may do them in the order you really do shower, dress, put on coat, pick up keys —and not leave. Eventually, you may do them in various orders—and not leave. You may even do just a few of them—and not leave. You get the idea. Usually dogs with separation anxiety become very stressed when they see these departure cues. So, if done correctly and not too often, a dog may become desensitized to them. Departure times. Once your dog is used to your departure cues, you also need to deal with his reaction to your leaving. Give him the stuffed Extreme Kong , safe chew, or treat dispensing toy. If all these great things happen when you leave, the rationale is that he should eventually see your departure as a great thing—or at least tolerable. You can do this at first in your house. Then, add longer times to your departure before returning. At first, you may add only seconds to being out-of-sight or outside. The goal is to eventually be able to leave for a normal business day. Working with separation anxiety is very challenging. Take your dog to a vet if such intervention is required Some dogs require veterinary drugs to help lessen their separation anxiety. Reconcile and Clomicalm have been approved for such treatment. These are prescription items. Every day, I pretend to leave my new puppy Millie. I got het in July during the pandemic. While you engage in your behavior modification, some experts advise not leaving your dog alone so that they gradually accept your departures. But we always try to set up our dogs to succeed. Arrange for someone to stay with your dog when you go out A family member, friend or pet sitter may help your dog. Many dogs with separation anxiety are fine as long as someone they trust stays with them. It took weeks for him to really progress. During this time, friends helped out by staying with him while I was gone and worked through his issues. At the end of about three weeks, he could successfully be left alone again. However, some are attached to a specific person and exhibit symptoms if that one person is gone. Instead, it may make it much worse. Add to that separation anxiety, and the dog may injure himself trying to escape from it. However, some dogs actually feel safer in their crate even when left alone. Then, the next time you leave, he may feel even more anxious. Conclusion Separation anxiety is a very complex behavioral problem. Even if your canine buddy exhibits some of the symptoms of dogs who have separation anxiety, you still must rule out other behavioral, medical, and environmental reasons to determine whether he has such departure stress. There are various ways to successfully manage dogs with separation anxiety. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Location Information for Michigan Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. September 23, By Tom Davis A gun dog is only as good as its mentor By Tom Davis There's a section in Thomas Quinn's magisterial The Working Retrievers in which he recalls a long trip home to northern California from a field trial in the Midwest, a trial that had gone badly for Quinn and his Labradors. Determined to purge the bitter memories, he takes his dogs pheasant hunting the very next day. Advertisement A rooster gives him a long, tough chance, but while he hits it hard, it sails across an irrigation ditch into a stand of heavy tules. Deep in the tules themselves, Quinn's dogs are in no position to mark the fall. Advertisement He calls them in, sets them up for the "blind," and, giving each of his three or maybe four black Labs a slightly different line, sends them one by one in search of the cripple. An artist by profession but a gifted writer as well, Quinn likens himself to an archer pulling arrows from his quiver--the last of which strikes the bull's-eye. When his dog comes up with the bird, the satisfaction is profound. And, in that luminous moment, Quinn's lingering demons are exorcised. Ness, you see, had also traveled halfway across the continent to a field trial, this one in Maine, only to have his dogs--cocker spaniels that are normally in the thick of the fight--come to utter ruin. He'd pulled in to his Oahe Kennels in Menoken near Bismarck late the night before; after stopping by the guest lodge where he houses visiting "sports" just long enough to say hello to John McMahon and me and cut the dust with a cold one , he toddled off to bed. Tom Ness hunting snipe near his North Dakota kennels with one of his English cockers. Murphy gets his chance, too, sweeping the open prairies--a pointing dog's proper milieu--with a flowing stride and a forward, easy-handling pattern. An intense point produces a single sharptail, one of the few still hanging out in the grass. But the gun on that side of the line doesn't hold up his end of the bargain, and the bird fades into the shimmering distance, the sound of its familiar gurgling clucks--kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk, kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk-kuk--borne away on the warm south wind. In The Field Now, less than 72 hours after their field trial debacle, Ness and his dogs are putting on a world-class show--to the detriment of the local sharp-tailed grouse population. He's running a brace of cockers, bouncy, honey-blonde Shelby and jet-black, jet-propelled Cassie; a diligent young black Lab, Bramble, that he brought back from a recent trip to the UK; and Murphy, a handsome and stylish Irish setter that he's polishing up for a client. The September sun is high, and with the temperatures climbing above 80 degrees, the sharptails are hunkered in the thickets and windbreaks, seeking shade. It's a perfect scenario for the flushing dogs, and while the rest of the pack walk obediently at heel, the dog Ness "taps"--simply by calling its name--works the cover. In point of fact, the cockers don't work the cover so much as they shred it. You half-expect the grass to catch fire in their wake. They also display perfect manners at flush and shot "Why couldn't you do that in Maine, you [bleep]? Topping a rise, we come to a gently sloping hillside that frames the golden stubblefield below. I circle around, giving the thicket a wide berth, and when I'm in position Ness says, "Cassie. When the black cocker hits the bush it literally seems to explode, to disintegrate and fly apart; grinding hard to process this contradictory information, my brain finally sorts it out. They're swarming out of the thicket like mutant bees, the roar of their wings and their chalk-on-slate chittering adding to the sensory overload. Somehow, though, I regroup in time to make a couple decent swings with my vintage Fox 16 and leave the covey two birds lighter. The way those birds came out of there--man! I felt like I was shooting in self-defense. The dog work, in particular, had been extraordinary. Most of us have our hands full handling one dog in the field; Ness handled four, and made it look easy. This is the kind of thing you read about--at least if you read people like the iconoclastic British gun dog authority Keith Erlandson "He's quite mad, you know," another Brit once told me --but never expect to experience in the flesh. Unless you hunt with Tom Ness, that is. Although a native-born son of the Great Plains--he grew up in Grand Forks in a family of boxers he fought in the amateur ranks himself and cribbage players, and worked as an oil shale geologist in Colorado before turning pro--his approach to dog training is emphatically British. You'll look in vain for an electronic collar "I had one," Ness'll tell you, "but it broke" ; when a cocker commits an infraction he runs it down, picks it up, and bites its ear to get his point across. That's not a training technique he learned on this side of the pond, I assure you. No, the trainers Ness has taken his cues from are the cranky, colorful Brits like Erlandson and Cyril Gwnne, whose Wernffrwd Kennels are comparatively little-known in America but legendary in the UK. Like them, Ness is keenly observant, shrewdly perceptive, and utterly his own man. Like them, too, he's outspoken to a fault: At a springer trial he judged not long ago, he told the crowd assembled for the announcement of the placements that while the first place dog was deserving, the rest of the field basically stunk. You could have heard a pin drop, except for the sound of jaws dropping. His judging calendar opened up considerably after that. With Tom Ness, what you see is what you get--but for all his Anglophilia, one thing you will never see is Ness affecting the British fashion and donning tweeds, Wellies, and a grouse helmet. Frankly, his wardrobe could stand some improvement; when I saw the ratty, threadbare vest he was wearing at the National Cocker Championship a few year ago, I was so appalled I called Filson ASAP and ordered him a new one. I wonder what the hell happened to it. Cassie proudly displays the result of a training session. The Professional Ranks Ness turned pro in the mids, and has been at it full-time since surviving a near fatal shooting accident in .A word to the wise: If he offers to show you the pictures, run. Run fast. He started out with springers, but by the early '90s had switched his emphasis to cockers. Indeed, Ness was in on the ground floor of the "cocker renaissance" here; his bitch Parkbreck Elm of Bishwell--"Mave," to those who knew her--was the second cocker in the modern era to earn an American field championship. The last two dogs, both owned by Hobson Brown, finished numbers one and two, respectively, in the high point standings. The cockers that win field trials are just the best trained and classiest of the bunch. They're the same dogs you'd want to hunt with. Another contention of Ness's that I tend to agree with is that the overall quality of cockers in this country--hunting cockers, I mean--is higher than that of any other gun dog breed. Whenever I get a call from someone who wants me to train a Lab that's out of American field trial bloodlines, I cringe. British Labs have all the desire to hunt and retrieve that you'd ever want in a gun dog, and they're so much calmer and more biddable. It's just about gotten to the point where they're the only Labs I'll take for training. The Obedience Factor Not surprisingly, Ness is a firm believer in starting with a heavy dose of obedience training, then using that foundation as a platform for the transition to the field. Again, it's the typical British approach--and degrees opposed to what most Americans do, which is to start killing birds over their dogs as soon as possible, and in the process not only allow but encourage them to chase at flush and shot. It's totally backwards. But their dogs are trained perfectly. Two of Tom Ness's "students" gives their teacher their full attention. When we were in the UK Cyril Gwynne had just been to his first field trial in nine years--and his dog had won it. The guy I was with, another American, asked him how many birds he'd given his dog before the trial. Cyril sort of looked at him funny and said, 'Why, not a one. A big-running pointer or setter, for example, is a bird dog. It hunts for birds. But a cocker, or any other flushing breed, is a gun dog. It hunts for the gun--which is why obedience training is so important. Taking a page from the pointing dog book, for the past few years he's been training extensively on bobwhite quail, quail that live in large recall pens--a. The birds have no human scent, they fly well, they go to the places wild birds would go--it's about as close to actual hunting as you can get. I just wish I'd started doing it 10 years ago. Easier said than done, we discover: The quail don't merely fly well, they fly spectacularly well. Still, we manage to scratch down a few--and when Oscar takes an unbidden step on one, he earns a bite on the ear for his indiscretion. Chastened but unfazed--"A cocker should be a bit of a scamp," says Ness's mentor Cyril Gwynne--Oscar vibrates like a tuning fork until Ness releases him. We wend our way toward the next johnny house. I tried everything I could think of, but I couldn't get her to stay to the front. They all flew straightaway, and as she watched them go you could almost see the light go on. It was as if she said to herself, 'So that's where the birds are.

labrador puppies for sale luton - Categories Dog Fun , Dog Training Pugs are small charming yet affectionate dogs with a pinch of mischief. They can be quirky, but their playful personalities are hard to resist. Pugs can swim and will instinctively dog paddle when put in water. Due to their short snouts and flat face, Pugs may have a more difficult time breathing with their heads tilted up in the swimming position. For this reason, they should always use a life vest when swimming in water. There are plenty of videos of quick-swimming Pugs on the internet. However, most Pugs do not enjoy being in water. However, these dogs were literally bred to swim by retrieving game from water. On the other hand, you have bulldog-type breeds, such as the Pug, who have a much more difficult time in water. So why is it that Pugs struggle with swimming, while other dogs excel? For the Pug, there are both physical and temperamental reasons why they may struggle. All of which, play a huge factor in their ability to swim. Dogs with these physical traits are called Brachycephalic dogs. Dog breeds with brachycephaly can potentially experience many health concerns thanks to the short nasal passage. In fact, breathing can become even harder in certain, unnatural positions. The genetic odds are stacked against them. With this physical characteristic, Pugs will need to tilt their heads upward while in the swimming motion. And as you can guess, swimming with a tilted head can make it more difficult to stay afloat. And, we tend to agree with them! After all, they were originally bred to be lap dogs for the Chinese elite. And according to Pet Helpful, they like to spend much of their day sleeping. They require relatively little physical activity compared to other dogs. Sloan would rather hang out on the couch than go for a swim always! Slow and short walks around the neighborhood work best. Sometimes even I struggle to swim for a prolonged period of time. Can you imagine dog paddling for 30 minutes? Pug Health UK recommends just one daily walk for a Pug. However, splitting it up into 2 short walks tend to work best with these dogs. Some Pugs will be more active than others. And if you do bring your Pug for a swim, make sure to give the dog many breaks in between sessions. Pugs have short legs with a long body In addition to the short snout, the body shape of the Pug is not ideal for swimming either. They have a relatively short set of legs and a barrel-shaped elongated body. Both of which, can hinder swimming in the Pug. For instance, Corgis have even shorter legs and a longer body. However, the difference is that Corgis have powerful legs that are needed to herd cattle and sheep. So unfortunately, without the power, the unusual body shape becomes a disadvantage for your Pug. Can Your Pug Swim? Not all Pugs have a difficult time swimming. So to really gauge how well these dogs do in water, we decided to survey real Pug owners. We asked this question in the Pug Subreddit and other online dog forums and gathered some answers. It was a scary sight and we never brought her again. Then he sank like a rock. Heh, I was there to save him in time. But he has somewhat learned to swim for short distances only. When were outside, he likes to jump in the pool when he gets hot. You should definitely consider getting a life vest. We let him swim for a few minutes at a time. In fact, there are plenty of capable pugs that love being in water. The key is to properly introduce them to water and swimming. If you want to swim with your Pug, it will require a lot of consistency and patience. Here are the best tips for getting your Pug to go for a swim and have fun! If anything, for peace of mind. Plus, it allows you to give them a little more freedom to roam around by themselves. We suggest getting a small or medium for your Pug. However, make sure to check the sizing chart before purchasing. Introducing Pugs to Water Perhaps the most crucial step is the introduction. If your Pug is scared of water, good luck trying to get them to go in it. And according to the AKC , the earlier you start this process, the better. You can do this by bribing them with treats and giving positive praises when they get inside. The second step is taking your dog to the exact spot he or she will be swimming at. From there, let your Pug sniff the water. If possible, you can try to get them to touch the water with their feet. If possible, find a sweet spot where the Pug can still stand up if needed. But because Pugs are relatively short dogs with short legs, it may be hard to do this in a pool. In this case, you may want to go to the shore of a nearby lake. By now, the life vest should be on your Pug. Along the way, always make sure to give high praises. Also, if your Pug has a favorite toy or enjoys playing fetch with a ball, make sure to bring it. Throw the ball out and in some cases, the Pug will go after it based on instinct and old habits. In this step, you just want them to get comfortable playing in the shallow end. The best way to get your dog into the deep end is to swim with your Pug. If your dog sees that its owner is enjoying the deep end, the dog will be more likely to join. You may need to get them more comfortable in the shallow end with a few more sessions. But if your Pug does join you in the deep end, make sure to give them high praise as encouragement. With these simple tips, your Pug will be swimming in no time. It may be difficult in the beginning, but persistence is key to successfully training your dog to swim. Posts you may like:. Do all dogs know how to swim without teaching them and are the chemicals in my pool bad for him? A: Hi Tony, great question. It is very important to be aware of water safety in regard to your Pug swimming, though it can be a fun summer activity. You do not mention how old your dog is; however one will want to be particularly careful with a small puppy. All Pugs will be able to swim purely out of a natural and inbred instinct. .This does not mean that a dog will enjoy it! Sadly, some dog owners simply throw their dog in, expecting that he or she will instantly know what to do and paddle around happily. In most cases, the dog will be swimming for his life, as adrenaline kicks in for him to survive. It is best to let your Pug get used to water in a pool where their are boundaries and you will be able to retrieve him easily should he swim away. The barrel shape of this breed does present more exertion to swim than some other breeds; however you will be the best judge to see if your dog enjoys the water and it will be your job to remain close in case he tires out too far from the edge. Your dog's first time in the water will affect their feelings toward this activity. Therefore how you introduce this concept is important. To prepare, be sure that: The water temperature is at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit .To make this an even better experience for your Pug try to: Have an older, experienced dog in the water with you if possible Floating toys that your dog may wish to swim to You may coach your Pug to join you or you may hold him or her as you enter slowly. Offer him plenty of time to adjust to this new sensation. If your Pug swims for shore or the edge of the pool or appears frightened, allow him to exit and then just let him watch for a while. You may then try again. Most dogs, when given a pleasant experience will continue on to love this method of fun and cooling off on a hot day. To keep your Pug safe: Take him out of the water before he appears to have tired himself out; if you wait until he shows signs of being worn out this can quickly turn into a dangerous situation where you are trying to pull out a Pug that is scared and resisting help due to panic. Supervise him at all times - Even those that learn to be pretty good swimmers also need to have an owner close by if not right beside them in the water Remember that even though a dog is in water, he still needs water to drink. Keep your Pug hydrated before and after any swimming Pools Regarding chemicals: Just as pool chemicals can irritate a person's skin, they will affect your Pug also. This breed has very sensitive eyes and skin. Limit the time to 5 or 10 minutes and evaluate if the chemicals have given rise to bloodshot eyes. If so, remove your dog. If your Pug seems to be able to tolerate the chlorine, you may add on 5 or 10 minutes each session in the pool. If irritation does occur, gently wash out your dog's eyes with fresh, clean water using a dropper. It is highly recommended to use chloride alternatives which will keep your pool just as clean without using elements that could cause reactions to your Pug's eyes or skin. At any rate, no matter where you are swimming with your dog, be sure to rinse your Pug off very well after you are done to remove all traces of chlorine. Possible hazards of allowing a Pug to swim in a pond or lake include: Blue-green Algae Cyanobacteria poisoning - Even very small exposure to this just a mouthful of water with this sort of algae can be fatal to dogs. Sings are vomiting, diarrhea , seizures, coma, shock, trouble breathing and even with treatment, it can be deadly. Liptosprirosis - This is a disease that is carried by the urine of wild animals. Most dogs are only vaccinated by this if deemed at risk; so a Pug will not be protected unless an owner asked for this inoculation specifically and the Pug is up-to-date on shots. Contracting a wide range of gastroenteritis related illness due to bacteria and pathogens in unclean, untreated water. Ears and Wrinkles Wet From Swimming Just like your Pug's ears and wrinkles will become soaked after a bath and need proper drying, this must be done after a swim session as well. After rinsing off your Pug and patting him dry, be sure to follow the grooming rules of swiping wrinkles with a Q-tip or canine facial wipes and dry the outer ear canals so that moisture does not remain as this can lead to an ear infection. Pug maintenance: what to do after a swim Can pug dogs swim? Yes, pugs can swim! Just like other dog breeds, pugs can enjoy water and doggy paddle like the best of them. That said, keep in mind that dogs, like people, have individual, personal preferences. So while some pugs might love the water and getting wet, others may prefer to keep their paws dry. Are pugs born knowing how to swim? Pugs, like all dogs, are born with a natural and inherent instinct to paddle in water. But, unfortunately, that doggy paddle may be the extent of their ability to swim. While some dogs think retrievers and settlers were born to swim, it may be difficult for some pugs to keep their head above water. For example, a dog who is thrown into the pool without warning will likely develop an understandable fear of water. That way, they associate water with fun. Here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your pug has a good experience their first time in the water: Make sure the water temperature is comfortable — not too hot and not too cold! Be sure the area is clear of obstacles and debris. If possible, have other, more experienced dogs, in the water. Have toys and other fun items around that your pug enjoys. Go slow. Offer them time to adjust, and to familiarize themselves with the scene. Instead, do the following to teach your pug how to swim: Get a life jacket. This will ensure safety and that your pug floats, no matter how good or bad they are at doggy paddling. Encourage your dog to enter the water on their own. Giving your pug freedom, instead of forcing them in, will make them feel more secure. Let them enter at their own pace. Entice your dog to enter. Bring a toy or ball that they like. Start in shallow water. Let your dog start with just getting their paws wet. If possible, bring a friend. Use lots of praise and reinforcement. Reward your dog for going in the water or swimming. Show your dog the exit. Learning where to exit a body of water is just as important as learning where to enter. The barrel shape of a pug requires more exertion to swim than some other breeds, so your pug may tire out faster than you expect. Be patient. Move slowly, and take your time. If your pug is scared, let them sit back and watch. Spending time in the water can be great fun when done safely. Here are some tips for making sure you and your pug stay safe in the water: Water temperature: Make sure the water temperature plus the air temperature equals at least degrees Fahrenheit before letting your dog swim. This is when their tail will droop and no longer wag or lift up. They can also get hypothermia, which is even more serious. Pug age: Puppies are particularly sensitive to potentially dangerous pool conditions, like water temperature and poisoning. Water toxicity: Water can be toxic to dogs if they swallow too much of it while swimming. A common sign is throwing up after swimming. To avoid this, play with a flat, small toy, like a soft flying disc, and feed your dog dehydrated or freeze-dried treats to help absorb the excess water in their stomach. Algae: Lakes and ponds might contain blue-green algae, which can poison your dog. Even a very small exposure to this, like a mouthful of water, can be fatal. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea and seizures. Dehydration: Just like with humans, a long day in the sun and in the water can cause your pug to become dehydrated. DO have fresh, cool water around so your pug stays hydrated. DO use positive reinforcement. DO have a life jacket available, if your pug needs it.
