Beau the Labrador Escape Artist by Lynn Stacy-Smith Earlier this week a viral video went around that showed a G reat Pyrenees easily letting himself out of the boarding area of a Virginia animal hospital and through multiple doors all the way to the outdoors. I feel pretty confident that I am not the only dog owner who watched the video and realized they were watching one of their biggest fears happening in front of their eyes. Beau was an incredibly good dog, very sweet and chilled out similar to my Jackson in personality but with a passion for hunting birds with Dad and playing fetch endlessly with tennis balls. Beau was the son of our family dog Jake and was just a year or so old himself when puppy Dutch joined the family. Sort of the middle child in the dog family, Beau bonded with Dutch the moment Dutch trotted into the house. If Dutch tried to chew on a contraband item, Beau would bring him a ball or a toy or start playing with him to make him stop. Their yard at the time was a glorious heavily wooded four acres in the country, with chain link fence around 3 sides and a beautiful cedar plank fence along the front of the house. It looked ok but of course made all of us joke that the next step would be rolled barbed wire like you see outside of prisons. The dogs also enjoyed expansive dog runs in the basement that were about four times the size of the extra-large crates that Jax and Tink have now. Beau the Labrador Escape Artist Beau also made a habit of jumping out of his dog run and either roaming the basement or joining Jake or Dutch in their kennels. Several years later my Mom was out-of-town and the dogs were being kenneled at their usual boarding kennel, a wonderful facility in the country that my parents had used for years and where I also occasionally boarded my black Labrador Babe. We loved the owners and staff and they adored our dogs, which helped alleviate the worry and guilt over boarding them. One morning when my Mom was on a two week scuba diving trip in Fiji, I got an early morning phone call from the kennel. Looking back, I am not sure why I was not dog sitting but I was home with Babe at my own apartment and was the emergency contact for the kennel. What happened! Then he broke out again last night and ate all of the food that we had prepared the night before. ALL of it. How much did he eat? You need to get him NOW! It was easier for Babe and me to stay at her house and impossible to imagine watching all four dogs in my tiny apartment with the unfenced yard. Thankfully I was off work that day because I would be on close watch to make sure Beau was ok after eating miscellaneous medications. Babe, Beau, Jake and Dutch I knew Mom was landing at night when she returned in a week so there was no chance that she would be going straight to the kennel from the airport, so I did not try to get in touch with her all the way in Fiji. It was long before texting and social media via smart phones would make it easier to reach someone in another country and there was no need to worry her when I had everything under control. Instead I left a message on her mobile phone voice mail that I assumed she would check when she landed. As I predicted, she listened to my voice mail and called me on my mobile phone to find out what had happened. By the time I was finished we were both roaring with laughter , although he could have easily killed himself if he had ingested the wrong medicines, not to mention the fact that those other dogs were now short a dose of their medications while their owners were away. August 11, Beau and Cash continue to thrive at Kamp and will be looking for their new adoptive home very soon. Beau and Cash have finally started playing with toys! Both boys have shown so much improvement. We are still working on some leash pulling but overall they are much better on leash than when they first arrived. They are enjoying playing with fellow foster, Chimichanga and have become the three amigos! Keep an eye out for this pair becoming available soon! July 28, Beau and Cash are doing great! They are such sweet, happy boys. Beau and Cash have been working on their leash skills and are doing better. They really like their time in the yard and happily run around sniffing and making sure everyone knows they were there! Though initially they were more interested in sniffing around their new surroundings both inside and out, they are starting to get a lot more affectionate with the people here. They still have yet to discover the joys of toys. The pool has been a fun place to cool off on these hot days. Beau has no problem getting in the pool, but Cash is still working on his confidence to make the plunge. They both have gained a couple of pounds this week too, which is great. It might just be muscle though from all the activity because they both are still on the lean side. Beau and Cash met fellow Kamp foster, Chimichanga and they all had a great time running around. July 19, Beau and Cash are settling in well. They love to explore the yard but are not very interested in toys yet. Both are very friendly with people. July 17, Beau chocolate and Cash black arrived at Kamp and had a great time running around the yard and exploring. They came from the same litter and have always been together so they are adjusting to sleeping separately in the kennels. Beau Beau Cash Beau and Cash did not get a lot of basic training or leash work in their previous home so the trainer at Kamp will be taking some time over the next couple of weeks to get them up to speed and learn all their good doggie behaviors and commands. The first show was a UKC show. Captain and Bailey competed and had a blast. Captain obtained his UKC Champion. Bailey obtained all of the points needed and is now only waiting for her competition wins. We cant wait to call her a UKC Champion too! Captain gained his National, International and Honors Ch. At only 3 months old, Dawn made it to Best of Show during this show! It is the best feeling in the world to see the smiles on their faces and their eyes lighting up! They all had a blast! Captain obtained his Honors Bronze Champion Title. Both girls did well. They both won first in each of their classes and Dawn won Reserve Best of Breed in all four shows. We were unable to attend due to puppies being at home, but didnt want the girls to miss out on a great weekend of showing! Dawn got first in class for all three shows. Benelli got first in class all three shows. Benelli also got Reserve Best Female in two show and Best female in one show. For being at a show without mama and dad, the girls did so good! The family may choose a puppy from the current litter or may pass to wait for a later litter. Even if the family initially expressed the desire for a puppy from a future litter early in the conversation, they will still be asked if they would like to select a puppy when the current litter selections start. Selections start at each litter's 6 weeks of age mark. This allows the families to not only pick from color, but also from personality. Please know that these can change at any time and are only listed for reference. This is non-negotiable. Cowering bulldog puppy sounds congested Typically, puppies will have various symptoms, ranging from stuffy noses resulting from allergies to respiratory congestion due to congestive heart failure. The most important thing is to learn how to spot congestion; to do that, you must understand what congestion is. It can be caused by infections, kennel cough, allergies, and heart failure. In addition to a runny nose, coughing, difficulty breathing, and a fever, dogs can get the flu as well. It is a respiratory illness in dogs triggered by a wide variety of pathogens and viruses. Kennel cough causes inflammation of the respiratory tract of your French Bulldog, along with its windpipe and voice box. Thus, it makes noises when breathing, breathes through the mouth, and sometimes experiences nasal discharge. To treat this, nasal openings are to be enlarged. We recommend seeing your veterinarian as soon as possible since cartilage may harden before six months of age, which makes surgery more difficult. French Bulldogs are Brachycephalic There are many breeds of brachycephalic dogs, such as the French Bulldog, which has a wide skull and a short nose. They commonly exhibit oral breathing and snoring, which are symptoms of airway obstruction. When French Bulldogs exercise, their breathing problems worsen. As they age, their breathing issues become more pronounced. Soft palate elongation To swallow, the mucous membrane that lines the nasal and nasopharyngeal closes. Snoring and nausea are the main symptoms. Exercise can worsen the obstruction. Treatment consists of surgically reducing the length of the palate. Generally, the results are good if the operation is performed before the larynx has been affected. Visit your veterinarian as soon as you can. Something Stuck In Their Nose Your French Bulldog may find many foreign bodies on its nose, such as leaves, seeds, grasses, and bone shards. Initially, continuous and intermittent sneezing is the primary symptom of a foreign body in the nose. Your Frenchie may experience a thick, usually bloody discharge if a foreign body remains in its nose for hours or days. This condition should be treated with veterinary assistance. You can easily remove foreign bodies with tweezers from the opening of the nostril if they are visible there. This includes pneumonia, which is usually treated with antibiotics. Your pooch can only get those antibiotics if they have been prescribed them. More pressing cases could even require a night or two in the doggo hospital, for IV antibiotics and fluids. Allergies are often treated using antihistamines. Parvovirus, on the other hand, is much more serious, requiring quarantine and intensive medication courses. Heart disease will often require long-term medication, particularly in middle to older-aged dogs. By not going to the vet with your poor pooch, you are running the risk of letting a potentially deadly disease, such as Parvovirus, run rampant. Vacuuming regularly, using a filter vacuum, will keep dust, mites , and other allergens to a minimum. Check Your Products Have you recently changed the cleaning products you use? Or laundry detergent? How about home fragrances, perfumes and colognes, or even hairsprays? All these things can agitate sensitive doggos, causing congestion, particularly with pampered, mostly indoor breeds. This can cause sneezing as well as nasal discharge and congested breathing. A foreign body in the nasal passage. If a dog sniffs up a grass seed or awn this is likely to give them trouble when it comes to their breathing. Sometimes, an abscess develops and there is significant swelling. Signs typically start abruptly and can be severe. Respiratory infections. Bacterial, parasitic, fungal, or viral can all create congested breathing. This is due to the inflammation as well as the production of excess snot and fluid. If your dog has had an anesthetic or sedation you may well notice their breathing sounds heavier for the next day or so. This is a combination of their relaxed muscles narrowing their airway and the fact that they will be very groggy. Anything that obstructs the natural airflow needs to be considered. Benign tumors like polyps and cancerous tumors would both need to be considered. Air quality. If the air around your dog is not well ventilated and is dusty or smoky, this can affect the way that they breathe. Laryngeal Paralysis. Dogs who develop laryngeal paralysis can have noisy breathing and a soft cough. It tends to be senior dogs that are affected. Sleeping position. Sometimes, your dog may be lying awkwardly, causing slight airway obstruction. This can mean they start to sound blocked up and congested.
