One of the things that they need to learn is how much pressure from their jaws causes pain. Without this feedback, a puppy does not learn to inhibit the force of its bite. Because all dogs can and will bite at some time, this lesson is vital for human safety. How is this lesson taught? When puppies play with each other, if one puppy bites another too hard, the bitten puppy will yelp, and may also stop playing and leave. This sends the message to the puppy that its bites were too hard and if it wishes to continue to play, it needs to be gentle. However, people often do not send this message to their puppy. In the beginning, they often allow the puppy to chew on them without reprimands and the puppy assumes that the behavior is acceptable. Children appear to be most vulnerable because their attempts at stopping the biting may not be properly timed or sufficiently abrupt to stop the puppy from biting. Adult supervision or a head halter for training should help to insure more immediate success. The message people should send is that mouthing and chewing on hands is painful. To do this, often all that is necessary is for all family members to emit a sharp yip so that the puppy backs off and cease all play and attention immediately. This sends the message to the puppy that the bites are painful and that biting will cause play to be terminated. When administered consistently, this will often stop playful biting. This training often works for those family members that are a little more forceful and assertive and who are immediate and consistent in their training. Should the puppy persist, chase or immediately repeat the behavior; closing a door and walking out of the room can help to teach the puppy that nipping leads to immediate inattention. What if yelping does not help? Other techniques are often suggested for play biting. Some involve harsh discipline, like slapping the puppy under the chin or forcefully holding the mouth closed. Remember, pain can cause aggression and cause the puppy to become anxious, fearful or perhaps more excited. These techniques also require that you grab an excited puppy; not an easy thing to do. Physical methods are therefore not recommended. Owners, who cannot inhibit the puppy with a yelp, could consider a shake can, electronic alarm, air horn or ultrasonic device as soon as the biting becomes excessive. The use of a head halter with a remote leash attached allows the puppy to play and chew, but a quick pull on the leash can immediately and successfully close the mouth and stop biting without any physical force. As soon as the puppy stops and calms down, the owner can allow play to resume, as long as biting does not begin again. This is one of the quickest and most effective approaches to stop the biting and get immediate control of the muzzle and mouth for owners not gaining sufficient verbal control. Remember that play biting is a component of play behavior in puppies. Play is a form of social interaction. Realize that your puppy is trying to play with you even though the behavior is rough. TO ensure that you are in control, be certain that each play session is initiated by you and not the puppy and that you can end each session whenever you choose. One effective strategy when the play gets too rough is to immediately end the play session and leave. Social withdrawal can be a very powerful tool. Leave the puppy alone long enough to calm down. If upon your return the wild playing begins again, leave again. Although it is tempting to pick the puppy up and take it out of the room, this interaction may be interpreted by your puppy as additional play and the biting may continue as you carry the puppy to a confinement location. But any hard biting or overly enthusiastic play should be discouraged. Your goal as the owner is to make it so play biting is never initiated by your puppy, and that you are able to stop the biting on command. They are meant to cause pain to the victim, which provides feedback to the puppy to help him learn to soften his bite. For example, every now and then an infant puppy might bite his littermate too hard. The victim will yelp and usually stop playing after a painful bite. The biter is taken aback by the yelp and also stops playing for a moment. This is how puppies naturally learn to control the intensity of their bites so no one gets hurt and the game can continue. However, this training must continue with you, the owner. This is to say that if a puppy can learn how to be gentle with other puppies, he can learn the same lesson from you. As such, the first and most important goal is to help your puppy understand that people have very sensitive skin, so he must be very gentle when using his mouth. The first step in how to stop a puppy from biting is teaching bite inhibition. As a result, he may unknowingly bite too hard. This is another reason why it is extremely important to teach bite inhibition. Bite Inhibition Procedure Here are some steps to take to properly teach bite inhibition: When your puppy is calm, begin playing with him and let him put your hand in his mouth. Praise him when he bites softly or gently. The yelp should startle your puppy and cause him to stop biting you. Praise your puppy for stopping or for licking you. Resume playing. If your puppy bites you hard again, yelp again. Repeat these steps no more than three times within a minute period. Time-outs are often very effective in helping him understand gentle play, and thus very effective in how to stop a puppy from biting. Time-Out Procedure When your puppy bites too hard, yelp loudly. When he startles and releases the bite, remove your hand. Ignore him for 10 to 20 seconds. Or, if he starts biting you again, get up and walk away for 10 to 20 seconds. After this short time-out, encourage your puppy to play with you again. Play with your puppy until he bites hard again. When he does, repeat the procedure above. Alternatively: No Yelp Procedure Puppies put everything into their mouths the way that young babies do. But many professional dog trainers say that the worst thing you can do is to draw attention to this instinctive behavior by reacting to it in any way whatsoever. The way I teach bite inhibition is to instruct puppy owners to withdraw attention when the puppy bites too hard. Effective punishment, by definition, inhibits the behavior that is punished. Yelping to imitate littermates may actually stimulate some puppies and is not recommended by veterinary behavior experts. You can do this in the following ways: When your puppy tries to bite you, redirect his attention to a toy, bone, or chew toy. If petting your puppy triggers him to bite, distract him from biting by giving him treats from your other hand. This will help your puppy get used to being touched without biting. Encourage play in the form of games such as fetch and tug-of-war, instead of wrestling and rough play with your hands. Once your puppy understands these games, keep a tug rope or similar toy with you. If he starts to bite you, you can immediately substitute your hand with the toy. Over time, your puppy will start seeking toys when he feels like biting. Recommended Puppy Tug Toys and Chews Antlers, bully sticks, and rawhides are not recommended for young puppies as they can cause choking. Antlers in particular are also quite hard and can cause tooth damage, and can split into sharp shards and cause serious issues. Carry his favorite tug toy with you at all times. Whenever he starts going for your feet, immediately stop walking or moving your feet. Once he stops, immediately praise him and get a toy to reward him. When he grabs the toy, you can start moving again. Repeat these steps until your puppy becomes used to your movements, and until he stops going for your feet or ankles. Lean toward him, make eye contact, and be dramatic. Say it loud enough to make him back away, but try not to frighten him. Repeat these steps, gradually increasing the time your puppy has to wait for his treat. Once he learns to back away from food by voice command, add in a hand gesture so he can begin to associate that with the command. Eventually, you will want to practice using only the hand gesture. You will also want to eventually repeat the exercise when your puppy is in a more excited mood. Work toward the goal of your puppy not taking food or touching your hand. Practice this exercise with your puppy every day to achieve this goal. Here are some methods to get him to that goal. But instead of yelping at just the hard bites, yelp and stop playing in response to moderately hard bites. Eventually, the moderately hard bites will stop, and then you can repeat the procedure for his next-hardest bites, and so on. Keep repeating this procedure until your puppy can play with your hands very gently, and can consciously control his bite force so that you feel little to no pressure. Further Your Time-Out Training Instead of giving your puppy time-outs for hard biting, start giving him time-outs every time his teeth touch you. Immediately walk away and ignore him for 30 to 60 seconds. If he follows you or continues to bite you, leave the room for 30 to 60 seconds. After the time-out, return to the room calmly and resume playing with your puppy. Before interacting with your puppy, spray the anti-chew spray on areas of your body that he likes to bite. You may spray it on clothing, as well. If he starts mouthing or biting you, stop moving and wait for him to react to the bad taste of the spray. Praise him when he releases his mouth from you. Apply the anti-chew spray to your body consistently for at least two weeks. He should quickly learn to stop biting you altogether after suffering the bitter taste every time he mouths you. Play builds a strong bond between a dog and his humans. The goal is to teach your puppy to play gently rather than not at all. Tip 2: Frequently provide your puppy with plenty of new and interesting toys. These will allow him to focus on those instead of focusing on his urge to bite you. Tip 3: Likewise, make sure your puppy has plenty of opportunities to play and socialize with other puppies and dogs. Tip 4: Always reward the desirable behavior. Tip 6: Avoid games like tug-of-war if your puppy becomes too excited, aggressive, or out of control. These types of games should only be allowed when you have initiated them, and when you can quickly stop the game on command. Tip 7: Avoid jerking your hands or feet away from your puppy when he bites. This will entice him to lunge and bite at you even more. Tip 8: If your puppy is constantly using biting as a demand for attention, or if he is becoming overly enthusiastic while he plays, then he is probably not getting enough stimulation. Consider giving him extra time to play, train, and exercise. Also give him more outlets for chewing. These will increase his stimulation and lessen his desire to bite for attention. Biting can be immediately stopped with a quick, gentle tug on the leash, with tension being released as soon as he settles down. Tip Hitting puppies for playful biting can have an opposite affect and can cause them to play and bite more aggressively. Physical punishment can also make your puppy afraid of you, and it can cause real, serious aggression. Tip Be patient and understanding. Playful biting is normal behavior for puppies. By the time puppies are around eight months old, they should have all of their adult teeth. At this time, teething should stop, although some dogs will continue to chew and bite until they are one year old. If you draw attention to it, the puppy becomes aware of it and it becomes a habit and a technique the puppy can use to get your attention — because even negative attention is better than none at all. Louis Mo. Our breeding dogs are AKC registered. Pet puppies will not get AKC papers. They will get copies of parents AKC pedigrees. You can get AKC pal papers once your puppy is spayed or neutered. We don't want to just meet the standard for a license, we want to excel expectations. This is required if you have five females. Please, make sure if you get a puppy in Illinois to ask for a copy of the Kennel License. Our adults are provided with an inside area with toys, beds and excellent vet care. A radio plays for them as well. Most prefer to lay up on their Kuranda beds most of the time with their toys or play with a friend. They get their areas cleaned at a minimum of four times a day and disinfectant is used twice a day. Adults get treats, vitamins, enzymes and are fed daily with a probiotic added for health. We have natural and artificial lighting as well. The dogs even have their own washer and dryer to clean blankets, toys and towels daily. Dogs are walked, given access to the pond when weather allows for swimming, let out to run in the open fields, play fetching and work on obedience training. Favorite thing of most is to find a human and crawl into their laps. Yes, our labs even come into our home and crawl into our chairs and onto the couch. Adults are treated monthly for worms, and provided vaccines as recommended by the vet. Once you see a dog with EIC or CNM you will understand why we test our labs to make sure our puppies will never be affected by these diseases that can be prevented by selective breeding. This area is cleaned and disinfected throughout 24 hours a day. If a puppy has an accident it is cleaned up and then disinfected, this is done so that by the time the puppies are six weeks old they are going outside to potty. Going outside by six weeks old to use the bathroom does help when they leave here at eight weeks old and go to their new homes in house breaking. Security cameras monitor puppies all the time and with this we can see if there is anything that needs to be done to them, while still allowing moms to help with the care of the puppies. Moms need to be able to feel comfortable with the puppies and help teach them the first eight weeks. This also helps make a better puppy when it goes home. We use blankets, towels, toys and other items in with the puppies to entertain them and help them get used to things before they go home. They hear vacuums, tractors, trucks, radio, and other noises as well. In summer time they get swimming pools and if weather is nice they run to the pond for adventures. We provide a large play area with toys to entertain them. They get Kuranda beds to sleep on or play king of the bed on. Puppies are given vaccines, vet care, wormings, vitamins, probiotics daily and fed a good quality feed. We start the weaning process at 3. This is puppy food, goats milk, and probiotic mix that we make for them four times a day. We want to provide you with a happy, healthy puppy and believe that the first eight weeks of life here gets them on the right track. Our puppies are so comfortable they very rarely cry and this is due to the care we provide them. A healthy, comfortable puppy is a happy puppy and that makes them great puppies when they get to go home. We also play with them daily, snuggle with them, and end the day with them fast asleep; before we go to bed all the puppies are sleeping safe inside. Puppies get vet care as needed and a full exam before going home. We also microchip all puppies and pay for the fees so that if they are ever lost someone can find the owners or us. Facility The building that we use for the adults is a new building put into use January .It is a beautiful building that we take great pride in owning, please check out our kennel page for pictures. It is climate controlled and the dogs appreciate it. A lot of time, work and details went into the building to make it safe and comfortable for them to use. We wanted to provide them with a safe and clean environment. They have fresh water, food and outdoor access. It has lighting inside to provide them with artificial lighting as well as outside they have natural sunlight. Every dog gets their own Kuranda bed and their own toys. We buy lots of toys here for the dogs and they appreciate that. We believe that if you are going to breed, that care of the adults is just as major as care of the puppies. Care is not just health testing it is also how the animal lives its daily life. Here at Mabry Labs we can sleep soundly knowing our dogs are safe from any bad weather, healthy and happy. The building we use for the puppies went in in March .It is sectioned off inside for each mother, so that moms feel secure with their babies. This makes it so that mom stays calm and relaxed instead of worrying if another animal is going to get her babies. It is climate controlled. We take moms for walks and playtime away from the pups so they get free time as well. Feed is never out of the bowls, so moms can eat what they want when they want. Probiotics are given daily with vitamins. Blankets, towels and toys are given inside and cleaned daily. All floors are disinfected every time we leave the building. There are mats that have disinfectant in them to make sure that our shoes are disinfected every time we enter. We also use disposable booties for our shoes when we enter puppy play areas. As of we have added on a meet and greet building. This is a secure building set up for puppies to play and interact with people no matter the weather outside. It is heated, cooled, has tv, radio, couch, toys, basically it is a house. My office is in it, so that I can spend time working and playing with the pups. We did in order to have a place that would be easy to keep disinfected between people. As much as we welcome people into our home a home can not be cleaned the same as this building. There is a lot that we do that is not listed on here and I will update more over time. We just wanted to hit some points on this page so that you understand what we do here. Our prices on pups might be a little higher than some breeders, or less than some breeders, yes some breeders do charge more than us and still don't provide half this in their breeding program. Why would we do this some might ask. Plus, people pick us to care for their puppies that first eight weeks and we do the best we can. We have dogs with excellent genetics with show lines and hunt test lines. We have brought in dogs over time to expand our lines and have some of the best that you can find. Most of all we breed our labs for looks, health, train ability and temperament. We have kept back puppies from breedings that we have done over the years to produce some of the most beautiful and smart dogs you will find. We know our lines are great so we have grandparents of our pups here that you can visit with. We've spent a lot of research time putting together our Mabry Labs. We don't just have the genetics, but we have the building to house them comfortably. We put our heart, soul and time into this. If you find breeders charging what we do or more without putting money with the facilities and just buying up dogs even high quality dogs you might want to look elsewhere. Establishing a routine for feeding your puppy three times a day and a designated "crate training" time each initial day will serve both your family and your puppy well. It is very scary for a puppy to come into a new home and be left alone for many hours at a time. While it is fine to leave the puppy for a little while each day, it needs to be done in a manner that will be conducive to helping your puppy adjust well. If you have children, be sure to read books and watch videos about children and dogs. The puppy is not a new toy, and the children need to be very respectful of the new puppies space and sleep schedule. The puppy is not a toy. Watch for signs that your puppy needs to use the restroom. Puppies have very little bladder control and will need to take frequent breaks to eliminate. The key times to be watchful and initiate potty breaks are: after eating, drinking, playing, or waking from sleep. Do not ever punish your pet for an accident. Just pick him up and redirect him. Then praise him each time he goes outside. Never ever take a puppy that has not been fully vaccinated to a retail pet store. Vaccinations will usually be completed by 16 weeks and your vet can inform you of the timeframe that your pet will have the full coverage of the vaccinations. Do not make any stops to pet stores before coming to our home. If you forgot something that you think your puppy cannot live without, please order online and have delivered. Or ask me, I may have what you need and can save you the purchase. If you are sick and contagious, please reschedule your visit. If you have young children that do not respond to rules, please do not bring them with you to puppy pick ups. We do not have extra staff to manage children and it is typically very hectic during puppy pick ups. There will need to be a designated adult managing children and a designated adult to work with us regarding the puppy. How to Greet a Puppy or Dog You never get a second chance to make a first impression! Make sure to adopt these simple tips so that you and your puppy get off to a great start. Tips for Success while Driving with a New Puppy The ride to their new homes will likely be the longest stressful period that the puppies have experienced so far. You and I have known about this day for a long time, but there is no way to communicate this to them until it happens. Some do better with this change than others. Be patient and loving and let your puppy know that they are secure and safe. Make this trip as calm and relaxing as possible. If your drive home is more than 2 hours, plan to bring a water bottle and small bowl so that your puppy does not get dehydrated. If your drive is longer, you may need to stop and let your puppy relieve himself. We recommend very clean areas especially churches. Another option to stopping is to bring enough disposable pee pads to spread out in your car. This is the safest as you will know exactly what surfaces your puppy has been exposed to. It is absolutely best to have at least two of you in the car on the ride home. One person to focus on driving and the other focused on the puppy. Some people like to have a crate set up as well so that the puppy has another option during the drive. If you purchased a snuggle puppy, it would be good to have this available as well. We will have a small cloth sprayed with Pet Remedy Calming Spray to help them stay calm. Keep your car AC on as cold as possible as this helps keep your puppy most comfortable and usually helps with car sickness. A smooth ride is also helpful. If your puppy falls asleep, keep driving. The only time you need to stop is if your puppy is getting really squirmy and fussy. Your puppy will only have eaten breakfast on pick up day. Be sure your puppy goes potty in our yard before you leave. This will help get you a further in your travels home. Do not worry if your puppy does not eat well the first week. Let them pace themselves. Some eat great, some just barely eat. They know what they need and will likely eat lighter just due to the change. The appetite will usually pick up after the first week. Directions to Legendary Labradoodles During the week before you pick up your puppy, you will have an opportunity to sign up for a pick up time on your scheduled pick up day. We will ask the families with the longest drive to select their times first. Most of the time, we schedule puppy pick ups between and 1pm and allow each family approx. Infrequent baths and brushing a couple of times a week make up the bulk of grooming requirements. Your Australian Labradoodle will shed only once as it grows from puppy to adult. Instead, most Australian Labradoodles get a standard clip that gives a close trim at the head and the back end, plus some extra attention to the hair growing around the paws and the eyes. The sofa? The carpet? The antique bedspread your Great Aunt Winifred hand crocheted? Crating your dog can give both you and him a sense of security. As your Australian Labradoodle gets older, he will need a crate big enough to stand up and turn around in. You can provide bedding once your dog can hold his bladder all night long. Remember to take off his collar when he is crated, or the collar could get caught and become a choking hazard. Avoid kibble made with grain-based foods. To identify the kibble content, look at the first five or six ingredients listed on the bag. Fillers like corn, wheat, oats and soy are not recommended for dogs because they would never eat these foods in the wild. A diet of these grains eventually can cause allergies, weight issues and other health problems for your dog. Your Australian Labradoodle should eat two meals a day, usually one to two and a half cups of dry food at each feeding. You can moisten the kibble with a spoonful or two of canned food. The first home meal, however, should be a light one because of the changes in environment. A spoonful of plain pumpkin will help with any intestinal distress that loosens up the bowels. Your dog should always have access to fresh water until two hours before bedtime. Puppy behavior Puppies like to explore their world, and everything is new to them. Most trainers recommend that you use a standard leash instead of a retractable one. The retractable leashes are ineffective for walking dogs; in fact, the dog ends up walking you. You can take your Australian Labradoodle to a professional trainer, or you can train your dog yourself. The basic commands include sit and the extension, stay , down, no, and leave or drop. Once your dog learns these simple commands, your can teach her tricks. Teaching her to go last teaches your dog her place in the hierarchy of your home. You will have to take her to the vet and maybe even to the pet store to pick out a new toy, so knowing the expectations for traveling will make the experience more pleasurable and safe for everyone. Health is 1. Solid Temperaments The second important distinction about Summer Brook is that all of our breeding dogs have proof of solid temperaments. All of them have at a minimum a CGC title. Where We and Our Goldens Live Our Home Our family lives on a private road in a community filled with gated areas, beautiful ponds and lakes, pastures, and woods. Our house has an open floor plan that enables us to see all of our dogs from one place. At the same time, we are still able to separate them individually or in groups when necessary. How We Care for Our Dogs Unless it is rainy, our dogs have free access in and out of our home through doggy doors. We brush each dog regularly and bathe them about once a month. Because they have access to large outdoor areas, we rinse them off often. We do daily competitive obedience training with most of them and they all do short training sessions at meal times. The dogs rotate between the various areas in our home so that they all have quality time with us. We use primarily natural methods to prevent fleas and tics, and we feed our dogs high quality food. Litters whelped and raised in our home How and Why We Initially Started Breeding When we first started this venture, we were a home-schooling family with 3 children from years of age. Our home life was and still is very compatible with caring for dogs. My younger daughter, Elise, was also wanting a career with dogs. At 12, Elise was unsure what career with dogs she wanted, but both girls had a big passion for animals. We began breeding initially purely for the love of our daughters. We had no paid employees and Darrell husband and Daniel son helped minimally. But as time went on, Darrell and Daniel become involved and we added several paid employees. Darrell now handles most of the communications. Daniel has graduated from college and is working in Georgia as a civil engineer. We spent many weekends going to obedience trials and conformation shows. Jenna, Elise, and I spent a good percentage of our free time researching pedigrees and breeders in Europe. We loved it! The dogs were our hobby. Adding Employees However, in time our daughters moved on to other interests. They graduated from high school and went to college. Both girls moved from home. It was time for a change for both the girls as well as for Summer Brook. After home schooling for 17 years, I was excited about the prospect of throwing myself into working with the dogs myself. Without the responsibilities of homeschooling, I found myself with more time to invest in my hobby. By this time, my hobby had turned into more than a full time job. Emma along with Luke has worked for us for over 4 years. Our dogs and puppies LOVE here! In , we hired our first employee, 20 year old Anna. She worked with us for about a year and then went on to become a vet tech. Then we were blessed to meet Emma, a 14 year old neighbor that has worked for us after school and on Saturdays for over four years. She is now in about to graduate from high school and will be going to Mississippi State to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Katherine and Jessi, two other high schoolers joined our team in .They both home school and are able to work mornings. All three of these girls have had a big impact on Summer Brook Acres. They will all be graduating this year. Sadly, only Jessi will stay in town and continue working with us. Both of my daughters are now back home working with us again! In the early days of Summer Brook, my interest in breeding was purely for my daughters. However, as I got more involved with the dogs, I learned that I had a huge love and talent for dog training. That is where my passion lies, but I am involved to some degree in all aspects of Summer Brook Acres. This means that your dog is the highest scoring dog in the highest level at the trial. Because breeding and training our puppies is our priority, my training time with our adults in limited. Details of my training experience are on our Trained Puppies page. His primary role with Summer Brook is with communications. I Karen initially handled this role. However, after several years, handling the responsibilities with both the dogs and the people became too much. Darrell also works with our family real estate investment business. Jenna Our daughter, Jenna graduated from college in English, her second passion behind dogs. However, she never lost her love of animals. Her current interests in the dogs is in training instead of the medical aspect. Jenna is now combining her love of dogs and specifically dog training with her love of writing. Jenna designed our website as a high school project and has done a total redesign on it twice since the original design. She has written or edited much of the content on our site. Jenna has graciously agreed to make Summer Brook her priority when we have puppies over 6 weeks of age. We both are advocates for positive reinforcement training along with a controlled environment. You can read more about Jenna on her recently launched blog at www. Elise Our daughter, Elise has also just returned home and is now working again with us at Summer Brook. She primarily works with taking care of our adults and working with younger puppies. Elise is going to school part time getting some prerequisites in before applying for nursing school. She will continue working part time with us and live at home until she finishes school. She is a puppy magnet and we are so blessed to have her! The Early Days of Summer Brook Acres Before getting our first dogs, we spent hundreds maybe thousands of hours researching. We started off deciding on the breed. From there, we moved to researching breeders and individual dogs and pedigrees. We retired more than half of what we originally imported without ever breeding them. Breeders send their best dogs to those they have a relationship with. Most of these best breeders are leery of sending dogs to the U. For those of you considering a new breeder or breeders with adults without verified clearances, proceed with care. There are a lot of European breeders that are exporting entire litters of what Americans are calling English Cream Golden Retrievers. In Europe, many of the parents of these puppies are considered by Europeans less than mediocre and just plain old Golden Retrievers. These clearances can be obtained from vets on dogs less than a year old. This type clearance is useless. See our page on How to Find a Good Breeder for more information. Our experience is not unusual for good breeders. There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to have really good breeding dogs. It is not as simple as calling or emailing a European breeder and asking for the best dog. The best breeders in Europe are very particular about where their dogs go. It takes time to develop relationships overseas. And it takes patience to build good lines with good looks, health, and temperaments. In addition to our English Golden Retrievers, over the past almost 20 years, our family has had one American Golden and 4 smaller dogs. These 5 dogs were family pets and never bred. Our family has had six horses, three birds, a rabbit, and three cats. Not all of them were at the same time! We loved them all. However, none of them quite captured all of our hearts like the Golden Retrievers. Though all our dogs are a light cream, we do not breed for color. We feel that the head is important but, it is not the entire package. There is so much more in producing a nice litter of puppies. We will only breed the best dogs that meet our very high standards. We have intensely studied the pedigrees of hundreds of dogs looking for those with generations of proven good conformation, good health, and a typical sweet Golden Retriever temperament. Most of our dogs have parents with not only titles earned because of their beauty, but titles proving their worth as working dogs also. While our dogs are beautiful, we believe that a good pet, first and foremost, needs to have a good temperament and be healthy. Our goal is to produce puppies that are physically, intellectually, and temperamentally as close to the FCI breed standard as possible, and then to do all we can to nurture and care for our puppies in such a way that they will have the best possible start in life to develop to their fullest potential. Several have come to us from other west coast states including Oregon and Washington. Dozens have come to Summer Brook from Texas as well. Some Flying. Others driving. There are quite a few in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. One family drove miles from Nebraska, a second from Massachusetts, and a third drove from northern Maine which is about miles. Over a dozen have driven from Texas and states such as Oklahoma and Arkansas. We have puppies all over the south. We get tremendous satisfaction from matching puppies to families. We will only send our puppies home with families who have time to raise a puppy. Our puppies go to families who want more than just a dog. They want a companion. We are looking for just the right families for our puppies. At the same time, we are busy raising puppies to be suitable companions for families.
