The Philippines Banned dog breeds in the Philippines Several countries around the world prohibit or restrict the entry and ownership of certain dog breeds. These countries have breed-specific legislation to protect people and animals from dog attacks. This legislation assumes all dogs of certain aggressive and strong breeds are dangerous and, therefore, restricts the ownership of these breeds. The Philippines does not have breed-specific legislation; all dog breeds are welcome in the country as long as the pet import regulations are met satisfactorily. What is breed-specific legislation? Historically, many dog breeds were bred for their strong jaws and aggressive nature. These breeds are used as guard dogs and are capable of inflicting severe harm to people and other animals. Breed-specific legislation aims to curb dog attacks by restricting the ownership of these breeds. Many countries, including Australia , New Zealand , Germany and others, have banned the import of dangerous dog breeds such as Pit Bulls, Cane Corso, Tosa Inu and other similar strong breeds. The law is based on the assumption that all dogs of these breeds are dangerous and pose a threat. Their strong jaws can cause extreme damage, and attacks by dogs of these breeds can be severe. Banned breeds in the Philippines The Philippines does not ban any dog or cat breed from entering the country if your pet satisfies all pet import conditions. Your pet must be vaccinated , microchipped and have the necessary paperwork to be allowed to enter the country. However, if you are travelling with a strong or dangerous dog breed to the Philippines, here are your pet parent responsibilities in the country: Ensure your pet is up-to-date with the vaccinations. Always have your dog on a leash when you are out in public. Aggressive dogs have to be muzzled in public places. If your dog attacks another dog or a human, assist the victim immediately and make sure they get the required medical attention. As a pet parent, you must shoulder all medical expenses. Report the incident to the concerned official — health workers, police officer, or government vet — within 24 hours of the incident. The dog will be placed under observation by a veterinarian. If you are flying to the Philippines with your pet on Philippine Airlines, it is important to note that the airline has an embargo on brachycephalic or snub-nosed breeds. Brachycephalic breeds are more susceptible to over-heating during air transport because of their shortened snouts. Philippines Airlines will not fly your pet if they are one of the following breeds: Affenpinscher. Their personalities are easy to love; they have a confident demeanor and are known for their almost clown-like antics when excited, making them an excellent family companion. This breed is quite family-oriented but may be distant with strangers at first. Their characteristic aloofness to outsiders helps make them great guard dogs. With consistent training and established rules and boundaries, this powerful pup can learn with the best of them. As a working breed, they were known for their wild pig and cattle catching abilities, making them indispensable on southern ranches in the US. Grooming Hurray for easy care! Make sure your vet gives your pup a professional cleaning every year, too. Be sure to put nail trimming every couple of weeks and ear cleaning monthly is usually enough on the grooming menu, too. And as for baths, plan on a bath about once a month or so. You may be able to just use your nose. If you detect an unpleasant odor eww! Training When it comes to training, an American Bulldog puppy needs a confident pup parent who uses positive reinforcement to teach various skills, such as how to walk nicely on a leash and come when called. Start training your American Bulldog puppy early to get them used to the ropes. Once you understand what works for them, training becomes easy. Remember: American Bulldogs are smart. These social interactions give your dog a chance to explore a variety of environments and social situations. Feed your puppy large-breed puppy kibble for their first 14 months to support slow but consistent growth. Skip food or supplements with calcium until your pooch is fully grown and eating an adult diet. The added calcium could disrupt healthy bone development. Treats are an essential part of training and a great way to show your pup you love them. However, too many treats can lead to a tubby pup, so check with your vet if you need help figuring out a proper treat-to-mealtime ratio. Exercise Even though they have a moderate energy level, an American Bulldog needs a lot of exercise. And exercise is important to keep your dog out of trouble. If they have unused energy, an American Bulldog will resort to destructive behaviors to release that energy, like chewing on your favorite pair of shoes. This athletic dog benefits greatly from structured walks and play to work the mind and their muscular build. As a puppy parent, strive to offer non-impact movement such as hiding balls in the yard or offering a puzzle toy, as these games lower the risk of joint and bone damage early on. Get out of the house twice a day or more if your young dog is up for it for playtime and walks that last between 20 and 30 minutes. Trainers often suggest skipping the dog park because structured play is more difficult in this setting. Instead, get creative with activities. Think: fetch, tug-of-war with a rope toy or a chewy option filled with something delicious. You may even try lower-impact dog sports like agility or nose work. Both are an excellent way to keep your pup mentally and physically engaged. Remember, a happy dog is a tired dog! Ideal Environment Both city and country homes will suit the American Bulldog as long as you can offer lots of exercise and playtime. Still, families with kids are a good match for this protective and intelligent breed. A structured day with regular walks and chances to play with a variety of toys is the best environment for the American Bulldog. Staving off boredom is paramount, and, of course, no animal likes to be home alone for a long time. When considering the American Bulldog as a pet, bear in mind that training is the key to their success, especially when adding this breed to a home with kids or other dogs. Pup parents need to be aware of some of these issues so they can help their dog live the healthiest life possible. Joint Dysplasia: This joint abnormality is seen in the hips and elbows, and a dog with dysplasia may run, jump and climb less than usual. Most often, the issue is a rupture or partial tear. Bone Cancer: Often found in the long bones arms, legs , the cause for this condition is unknown, though vets feel it may have a genetic or environmental component. Deafness: Deafness, which can occur in one or both ears, may be acquired via drug exposure or infection. But deafness could also be hereditary and is linked to dogs with light coats and eyes. Acquired deafness is usually permanent but may improve over time without intervention. A special diet may be the treatment or medications, depending on the cause. Spinal Issues: Degenerative myelopathy DM is often genetic in nature and affects the spinal cord, leading to weakness and hind limb paralysis. Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis: NCL is an inherited, progressive and rare neurological disorder that starts showing up between 1 and 2 years of age. The most obvious symptom is behavioral changes in the dog, and the pup will usually lose coordination and eyesight. It can be discovered through a DNA test, and at this time, there are no treatments. This proud pup carries an imported pedigree, having been brought over from across the pond as a descendant of the English Bulldog, which was originally bred for bull baiting. Thankfully, this horrific sport was outlawed in England in .Back in the 17th century, early settlers packed these working dogs with them for service on farms and ranches. The American Bulldog became a utility player, stepping in to accomplish many tasks, such as guarding livestock and catching cattle and feral pigs. In fact, were it not for their success as an excellent catch dog in the southern states, we might not know the breed today. John D. Johnson and Alan Scott were able to breed the last few native American Bulldogs in the southern US, resulting in two types the Scott type and the Johnson type that thrive today. These breeds differ in appearance; the Johnson American Bulldog sports a bigger, stronger build, a larger head and short muzzle, and the Scott American Bulldog has more lithe features, such as an athletic, small-boned frame and a longer muzzle. The Pug is one of the most easily identified dog breeds, known for its wrinkled light-colored coat, dark face, and curled tail. These little dogs are ranked as the 32nd most popular breed according to AKC registration statistics and there are many reasons to love them. For one thing, the small size of this breed makes him an excellent choice for small living quarters like apartments or condos. Pugs also do not tend to be overly active, so they only need a moderate amount of daily exercise. The Pug was developed as a companion breed and it continues to be popular in this vein today. Pugs may be small, but they have big personalities and they form very strong bonds with their human companions. If you want to make sure that your Pug remains your faithful companion for as long as possible, be sure to feed him a healthy diet that meets his nutritional needs. Below you will learn the basics about the nutritional needs for Pugs — you will also learn about some special considerations to keep in mind when feeding your dog. Check out the top selling dog food here Nutritional Needs for Pugs The Pug is a small-breed dog that stands about 12 inches tall and weighs between 14 and 18 pounds at maturity. Although these dogs may not be very large in terms of their size, they do have big personalities and they love everyone they meet. The Pug is a very friendly and loyal breed that forms strong bonds with its human companions — they also love to meet new people. Pugs were originally developed as a companion pet and they continue to serve that purpose today. These little dogs have wrinkled skin and short faces which sometimes leads to breathing problems, but a healthy diet will help to keep your Pug in good shape. Like all dogs, the Pug requires a balance of nutrients in his diet — the most important nutrients are protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Protein is the most important consideration and it should come from high-quality animal-based sources like fresh meats and meat meals. Just be sure that the meat meal comes from a named source like chicken meal or salmon meal rather than a generic source like poultry meal or a byproduct meal. In addition to protein, your Pug also requires healthy fats in his diet. Fats are particularly important for small-breed dogs because they provide concentrated energy as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support skin and coat health. The third most important nutrient for dogs is carbohydrates which provide your dog with vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber to promote healthy digestion. Dogs do not have specific requirements for carbohydrates but this nutrient should come highly digestible sources like whole oats and brown rice. If you are worried about food allergies, look for a product that uses gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates like sweet potato and tapioca starch. These formulas are typically more energy-dense and nutrient-dense than large-breed formulas because they need to provide your small-breed dog with the calories and nutrients he needs in a smaller portion size. Small dogs like the Pug should be fed more frequently during the day than large-breed dogs to make sure their metabolisms stay at the right level. You can feed your Pug puppy freely but when he gets older you should ration his daily portion into three or four small meals. This will ensure that his metabolism gets the fuel it needs without putting him at risk for obesity. In addition to being mindful of how much food your Pug eats, you also need to be sure he gets enough calories. Small-breed dogs like Pugs have much higher energy needs than large-breed dogs. Consider this — a pound Akita might need a total daily ration of 2, calories while an pound Pug might only need .If you divide it out, however, the Akita needs about 23 calories per pound of bodyweight while the Pug needs closer to 41 calories per pound of body weight. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. Temperament: Loyal, attentive and confident. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Appearance There are no breed standards for this dog but you can expect this mix to look athletic. Because of this, they have strong hindquarters to propel them in play and deep chests for running long distances. While most German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes have dense fur, some have the smooth coat from a Rottweiler. In addition whilst most have floppy ears some can have pointed ears. These dogs often have the wolf-like snout of their German Shepherd parent. Expect your Shepweiler to look as unique as their personality! Coat and Colors The most common coat color is the black and tan patterning of their Rottweiler parent. However there can be a mix of German Shepherd patterning in there too. Either way expect this dog to shed as much as their parent breeds do. Height and Weight These dogs are large and stocky standing around inches and weighing around pounds. Your German Shepherd Rottweiler mix will likely favor one family member over all others. When it comes to personality, science says that some traits can be heritable, such as how a dog acts in friendly situations or how it reacts to loud stimuli. While equally loyal to its pack, expect your German Shepherd Rottweiler mix to be more devoted to their main caretaker. Their attentiveness is mostly thanks to the Rottweiler, so your dog may have a very strong guarding instinct. Both parent breeds are known for being calm and aloof but are not aggressive if socialized properly. Despite their aloofness, this mix is not all business. This hybrid has the playful, goofy personality Rottweiler is known for and is surprisingly cuddly. Despite their large size, they act more like lapdogs when they are around the people they love best. As both of its parents are working dogs this breed can be very energetic and destructive if not properly exercised. Fortunately, both parent breeds are not known for being vocal, but the German Shepherd Rottweiler mix may bark if there is a reason to. As previously mentioned they can have a strong guarding instinct, so make sure it knows what to guard and what to share. This can be helped through early training and socialization in order to prevent resource guarding especially food guarding. A properly socialized and trained German Shepherd Rottweiler mix can be a gentle and calm family companion. Both the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler have been bred to work, both breeds are very large and strong dogs and the German Shepherd Rottweiler mix is no exception. This mix needs an active family that loves being on the move. Their intelligence is a double-edged sword, as they can be mischievous if you do not factor in mental stimulation. Still, their intelligence makes for satisfying training sessions. Overall this can be an intense dog to handle, especially if you are not used to being around larger breeds. They will need a home with a large yard to play in and plenty of exercise. If you put the time and effort into giving this breed the exercise they need, this mix will be a loving companion. If this hybrid is left bored they may end up playing with your furniture! Hikes are great for this dog, as the rugged trail and long-distance require more energy than walking around the block. You can do much more with this mix than just walks though. They will enjoy the basic doggy games of fetch and tug-of-war. In addition try teaching your dog how to swim to add an extra bit of fun to family lake trips. If you want to take it up a notch, the best way to engage this active hybrid is through agility. This dog sport is a great option for German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes as this challenging but fun activity will give them the cardiovascular exercise they need. Number of Walks Per Day: .To keep shedding low be sure to brush them weekly to get rid of dead hair. If they spend lots of time outside you may need to bathe your dog twice a month. Brushing for dental health is a must, as is cleaning their ears to prevent infection. Feeding and Diet German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes need to eat lots of food because they are an active breed. Keeping this athletic dog fed with the right nutrients is essential. Avoid any kibble with excessive amounts of fillers. Calories Per Day: Cups of Kibble Per Day: 3 Known Health Problems This mix is generally considered a healthy breed, but it is still susceptible to some common health conditions associated with its parent breeds. The main concerns being: Hip dysplasia. Regular vet check-ups can help prevent and manage such issues. The German Shepherd? Photo by Karen Sanders Studio on Shutterstock German Shepherd Rottweiler mixes can be very intelligent dogs and even though they might be easy to train for experienced dog owners, beginners might find themselves struggling. These dogs are not as sensitive to the handler and have a high drive while being an all-rounder. Of course, all of the above depend on your exact breeding line. As many of you probably know, the Rottweiler and German Shepherd are both prone to diseases like hip dysplasia. You can control this by choosing the right breeder. A reputable breeder that tests all dogs for health will make sure that everything checks out, from the hips to the heart and eyes. Do not fall into the trap of mixing the biggest Rottie with the German Shepherd that wins the prize in every sloped back competition. Sloping backs are a real issue with the German Shepherd while the Rottie mainly has to fight with too much weight gain, especially during puppyhood. While many sources only mention up to 8 years of age for the Rottie, I actually believe that due to proper breeding, a healthy diet and environment as well as exercise, your Rottie can live well beyond that age. The exact lifespan depends heavily on various factors, of course. What most people are asking with this question is how even-tempered the Rottweiler German Shepherd mix can be. That may look surprising but the Rottweiler is actually very good with kids. Countless hours of research, watching videos, interacting with them live — all these things will help with determining if the German Shepherd Rottweiler mixed breed dog is the right choice for you. Be prepared to take on the leadership and treat your furry buddy with respect and sensitivity and they can be the most loving companion. The Rottweiler is known for not being one that forgives any serious mistakes, so make sure you have the experience and knowledge that is required. No matter what the exact fur will look like, get ready for serious shedding twice a year. Apart from shedding season, regular brushing should suffice. Both dog breeds have an undercoat which makes them suitable pets for colder climates. How big do Shepweilers actually get? Male German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Height: 24 — 27 inches 60—69 cm Male German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Weight: 85 — lbs kg As you probably suspected, females are smaller and lighter, even very tall females are roughly the same height as a small male Rottweiler , for example. Weight and height prognosis are hard enough as is, giving these numbers for mixed breeds is a lot more unpredictable. How Much Are Shepweilers? Papers may not be your focus, but the fact that purebred dogs can be health tested a lot easier since the pool of genetic diseases is smaller, makes searching a proper breeder easier. Check our lifetime cost article for more hint: the cost of my Rottie runs in the tens of thousands of dollars. Click here for more information on this characteristic German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Highlights German Shepherd Rottweiler Mixes are mixed breed dogs, meaning they are not purebreds like their German Shepherd Dog or Rottweiler parents. The main colors of Rottie Shepherds are black, gray, sable, white, red, tan, and cream. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of two or three colors. Both parent breeds are prone to shedding, which might not these mixed breed dogs a poor choice for allergy sufferers. These dogs have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mixes can make fun playmates for kids of all ages, but this big dog could accidentally hurt smaller children with what was meant to be a playful romp. Train your dog not to jump up early on. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mixes are pretty amicable with other dogs, as long as they are introduced slowly and properly. When it comes to cats, your Shepherd Rottie may have the instinct to chase. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds, both of German descent , to combine their loyalty, strength, and intelligence. They continued to create German Shepherd Rottweiler Mixes as demand for the pups climbed. Even though the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix rescues, or check with breed specific Rottweiler or German Shepherd rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. That said, as a cross between German Shepherd Dog and Rottweiler parents, you can expect Rotties to be on the large side. Most weigh in at 75 to pounds and range in height from 22 to 28 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger than average. Both the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler were bred to be working dogs, and this mixed breed likes to stay active both physically and mentally. They love to snuggle with their humans, and they tend to stick closest to whoever their main caretaker is. They can sometimes become a little too protective of their humans if they feel threatened. As big dogs, this mixed breed thrives in family homes, preferably with a yard or other area to run around. Still, a German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix can do just fine living in an urban setting, as long as their human is active and dedicated to exercising them frequently. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues , which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Photos You need to have previous experience with dogs To understand better the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix, we should take a closer look at her parents. Rottweilers are in the Top 3, according to the same list. They have powerful shoulders and leg muscles, being used in the past to pull small wagons and to guard ranches. By mixing these two great dogs, breeders have obtained a strong, very intelligent crossbreed, with great watchdog abilities. Usually, these dogs are loyal, affectionate, and develop a strong bond with their families. However, when they lack training, they can have little or no respect for rules and their excellent watchdog abilities will make them overprotective and even aggressive. Be patient, but firm, and use positive reinforcement only. These dogs are fast learners, as both their parents are obedient, highly intelligent, and like to please their owners. A German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix needs exercise to stay in good health. Being very intelligent, this dog also needs serious mental stimulation. Keep her busy with training sessions and interesting games every day. Your puppy should be exercised according to her age and physical abilities. As an adult, your dog needs to be active for about two hours a day. Split this time between one or two minute walks, a trip to the dog park, and some short play sessions. They usually like playing catch or Frisbee, and can also use some time spent on their own in the yard. Make sure your dog is ready for such activities before putting her through such intense exercising. If bored, your dog will mess up your house, and your life Large breed dogs are rarely suitable for small houses, with no yard in which to move freely. Destructive chewing is often seen in both German Shepherds and Rottweilers, so you can expect a similar response from your dog if you leave her all by herself every day. Choose a dog cage for large breeds and furnish it with resistant chew toys. These dogs can also develop excessive barking when they get bored, which is stressful and annoying, especially for your neighbours. If you work too much, hire a pet walker or take your dog to a daycare, where she can get involved in some interesting activities in your absence. Your dog can develop serious health issues Despite their impressive looks and strength, almost all large breeds run the risk developing a series of medical problems. A German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is no exception, even more so as both the Rottweiler and the German Shepherd are famous for their specific health issues. Some health conditions your dog can inherit from her parents are: cancer;. These two breeds are in fact very similar, both with German heritage, and therefore the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is a fantastic crossbreed. These dogs are intelligent, friendly and good natured, making them excellent family members. You may need some experience with large breeds before you think about purchasing a German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix, but read on below to see whether this pup is the right addition for your home. They are very strong and intelligent and the purpose of breeding them was to eliminate health issues and negative traits that their parent breeds held. The German Shepherd had a controversial past. These dogs were used in World War One and were seen as German dogs which is why they were shunned. However, these dogs regained popularity with the public in the s and have been a favorite with the police and military for decades, due to their hardworking and loyal nature. The Rottweiler also originated from Germany and were strong drover dogs. As technology advanced they were not need to herd cattle anymore, but they were known for their great work ethic. These working dogs continued to be useful members of society and, since the s, have been guide dogs, guard dogs, therapy dogs and search and rescue dogs. Your dog may look more like their German Shepherd parent or their Rottweiler parent. However, we can make assumptions based on past litters. These puppies are normally born in litter sizes of around eight. It does not matter which parent breed is the sire or the dam because they are both similar sizes. Always make sure that you buy from a reputable breeder. Appearance This mix dog is a medium to large breed and is normally fully matured between 18 months and 2 years of age. Normally, these designer dogs stand between 22 to 27 inches in height and weigh between 75 to lbs in weight. These dogs normally have floppy ears, but if they take after their German Shepherd GSD parent more, they may become pointy as they mature. Coat This mix breed normally has a medium, dense coat, although they can have longer coats. Unfortunately, these dogs shed a lot! They are not hypoallergenic and are not the pet for those with allergies. The amount they shed can be helped with regular grooming, but we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix almost always has a black and tan coloring, just like both their parent breeds. Temperament The German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix has a strong personality and is certainly suited to those who have experience with large dog breeds. That being said, these pups are loyal and loving, bonding to their owners and making an excellent family dog. With the right upbringing, these dogs are extremely tolerable of everyone — adults, children and other dogs and animals. They can sometimes be aloof with strangers and other pets when they are younger, but with the right socialization this can be fixed. With both parent breeds historic working breeds, it is no surprise that the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix is an active and energetic dog. This is one of the reasons they are not recommended for first time dog owners. These pups love to be outside and love to play games. The perfect companion, they love to be near you and like to please. Known Health Issues One of the main reasons for breeding the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix was to eliminate health problems that their parent breeds face. While this certainly happened, these dogs are still prone to some health concerns. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Elbow Dysplasia — this is a common condition in large breed dogs. It can be caused by different growth rates and can cause lameness. It can be fixed with surgery. Bloat — this affects both parent breeds and is potentially fatal. You need to know the symptoms of it. Feeding your dog smaller more frequent meals instead of one big meal can help to reduce the risk. Degenerative Myelopathy — this is a progressive disease of the spinal cord that can result in hind leg paralysis. There is no cure but there is treatment. It can be helped with intensive physical rehabilitation. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix, it is time to take a look at what life with one of these pups is really like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise requirements and their grooming needs. Food And Diet It is no surprise that this large breed of dog needs a lot of food. You should be feeding the German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix roughly calories a day, which equates to around 5 cups of kibble. Of course, you should always double check the back of the food packet to see the exact amount of a certain food you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. Always check that the food you feed your German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix meets their nutritional requirements. Due to their high energy levels, they need high-quality protein in their diet. This can be reduced to two meals a day once they are fully grown. One thing to remember with the Shepweiler, as with other large breeds such as the Bernedoodle, is that because they are a large breed, they are more prone to bloat which can be dangerous. Smaller, more frequent meals will reduce the risk of bloat. The German shepherd and the rottweiler are popular breeds, each hailing from Germany individually, and both are known for their higher intelligence and effectiveness as working dogs. Police forces and the military often use the German shepherd rottweiler mix due to their intelligent, easily trainable nature; this nature also makes them a good choice for service dog duties. Today, many individuals and families recognize the benefits of adding this protective, watchful breed to their family, and this mix is steadily gaining popularity as a companionship dog. Because this dog is a designer breed and there are no breed standards for the mixed breed, the appearance of the German shepherd rottweiler mix can vary greatly. That being said, they tend to have longer snouts, strong hindquarters due to the athletic nature of both the German shepherd and the rottweiler, and either floppy or straight ears depending on their individual genetics. They are a larger breed and weigh approximately pounds on average. The coat color of the German shepherd rottweiler mix is often black or brown, but there may be traces of tan, brown, or grey. They are likely to be bi-colored and may have rottweiler or German shepherd patterning depending on which genetics win out in the breeding process. The coat of the German shepherd rottweiler mix is thicker and smooth, and it may have a short to medium length. The German shepherd rottweiler mix is a large-sized dog. They stand between 22 and 27 inches tall and weigh between 75 and pounds. There is not much difference in size and weight between males and females of this breed. Their coat is thicker and smooth and typically short, though medium-length hair sometimes occurs. If your German shepherd rottweiler mix has longer hair, they will likely require brushing more often. The temperament of the German shepherd rottweiler mix can only be described as loyal, protective, and dedicated. This is a breed that will be devoted to its family, and they will form strong bonds with their primary caretaker. While many individuals may perceive them as aloof or aggressive based on their appearance, they can actually be quite cuddly. Oftentimes, this breed will assume they are a lap dog, following you everywhere around your home so they can spend time with you and keep an eye on you. Therefore, they may be prone to aggressiveness or destructive behavior if they are not properly socialized, trained, and cared for. Contrary to their appearance, the German shepherd rottweiler mix can be quite affectionate. They are protective and dedicated to their families, and they will love to spend all their time around you, whether cuddling, playing, or simply napping at your side while you go about your daily life. The German shepherd rottweiler mix may be good with children in certain circumstances. Additionally, your German shepherd rottweiler mix will need to be properly socialized and trained to understand how to interact with children correctly. Homes with older children are likely ok for this dog, but you should always supervise playtime between your dog and children. The German shepherd rottweiler mix can be good with other animals as long as they are introduced slowly and your dog has been properly trained and socialized. In most cases, however, they get along with other animals easily. Many individuals may believe this dog is aggressive due to their appearance and the fact that they are a mix of two of the more popular guard breeds. As long as you properly socialize your dog this can be done with a dog of any age if needed , commit to a consistent training schedule, and make sure that your German shepherd rottweiler mix gets plenty of exercise throughout the day, they are unlikely to be aggressive. They may still bark at perceived threats and be generally untrusting of strangers, but this is due to their protective, loyal nature more than it is aggressiveness. Your German shepherd rottweiler mix is unlikely to be very vocal and bark without reason. Mostly, you will hear this dog bark only when they perceive a threat, are trying to alert you to something, or feel the need to protect you. You can train proper barking habits into your dog, and part of what makes them a good watchdog is their ability to bark and alert their owners only in certain situations. The German shepherd rottweiler mix is a combination of two of the more intelligent dog breeds around today, making them fairly smart. They require a higher amount of mental stimulation than other dog breeds, and they do best when presented with a consistent training routine. German shepherd rottweiler mixes are eager to please and love learning new things. In most cases, the German shepherd rottweiler mix will be easy to train thanks to their hard-working nature and their intelligence. Never use negative reinforcement such as yelling or hitting to train this dog or any dog , as they will likely learn to hate training sessions and distrust you, leading to destructive and aggressive behaviors. German shepherd rottweiler mixes are a high-energy breed and require a lot of exercise and other physical stimulation to stay happy. You will need to give them at least an hour or two of exercise per day and make sure that they receive a minimum of two long walks each day. Additionally, they will need plenty of space to run around in safely and have outdoor time to spend with their families and toys. This breed is a great choice if you already have an active lifestyle full of hiking, long walks, and time outside and want to add an energetic companion to it. The German shepherd rottweiler mix is not the best choice for an apartment dog. They are a large dog breed and need plenty of space to exercise, sleep, and play in around your home. Apartments with small living quarters, breed restrictions, and minimal access to the outdoors or dog park play areas are not the best living conditions for this breed. Your dog may develop destructive or aggressive behaviors due to the lack of space and exercise areas. A larger home with plenty of outdoor access or a fenced-in backyard makes the best living choice for this dog breed. German shepherd rottweiler mixes are a great choice for a watchdog. This breed is known for being loyal, protective, and watchful, and they are naturally wary around strangers due to their dedication to their family. They are also a relatively quiet breed, so when your German shepherd rottweiler mix starts barking, you know that they are doing it for a purpose. Your dog can be trained for watchdog and guard dog duties in addition to their natural propensity for watchfulness, and their appearance alone may be enough to scare off potential threats. The German shepherd rottweiler mix can be a good choice for a service dog. This breed is intelligent, skilled at learning new commands, and large enough to be an effective mobility or medical service dog. They are also quite loyal and watchful, which are great characteristics for a psychiatric service dog. Additionally, as a combination of two working breeds, they thrive when able to perform commands for their owners, which makes them especially suited for daily service dog tasks. How to Care for a German Shepherd Rottweiler Mix Your German shepherd rottweiler mix will need proper care to ensure their health and happiness. First, make sure that your dog is getting an hour or two of exercise each day, including at least two walks per day, and that they have plenty of toys and outdoor playtime. This will help them meet their physical stimulation needs and ensure they stay happy; this also decreases destructive behaviors. You should be feeding your dog high-quality wet or dry food based on their dietary needs and size, and you can supplement their diet with nutritional treats. Make sure to maintain a consistent training routine with your German shepherd, as this will help meet their mental stimulation needs. Brush your German shepherd rottweiler mix a few times a week or more if they have a longer coat, and take them for professional grooming occasionally to ensure their nails, ears, and coat are all kept in top condition. The German shepherd rottweiler mix is not the most high-maintenance dog, but they will likely need occasional baths and professional grooming visits. Grooming can be especially helpful around shedding season when the fur coming off of this dog generally increases. German shepherd rottweiler mixes have an average shedding amount, but their thicker coat ensures that a lot of hair will come off during shedding season. You should brush your dog regularly to help with proper shedding and preventing tangles, and you may want to bathe them more regularly or take them for a professional groom during shedding season. Your German shepherd rottweiler mix will need approximately 40 to 50 calories per pound of body weight as a starting point. For most dry dog foods, this equates to about a cup to a cup and a half of food per day split into two or three meals. Consult a veterinarian if you need assistance calculating how much to feed your dog. Many dogs are prone to genetic health conditions or other specific health issues based on their breed, and the German shepherd rottweiler is no different. This breed may be prone to conditions such as: Joint degeneration. Autoimmune Diseases Eye Disease Most of these problems, however, can be prevented or treated as long as you are willing to monitor your dog and keep a close eye on them. You can ask your veterinarian to schedule your dog for a DNA test that will help in the determination of possible inherited diseases. There are also balanced diets that are dependent on what your dog needs. You can ask your veterinarian for a diet recommendation that is specific for your dog. Rottweiler German Shepherd Hybrid Exercise Requirements The German Shepherd Rottweiler hybrid is not recommended for owners who have small homes or apartments not only because of their size but also because of their exercise requirements which will include outdoor activities that are best conducted in a spacious backyard. They can spend plenty of time enjoying the outdoors in fine weathers. They also tend to become destructive and chew a lot of things if cooped up for too long. If you are going to leave for a dog for longer than a few hours, it is better to leave them at a dog daycare so they can enjoy and socialize with other dogs. The dog is also fine with any kind of weather since they harbor a decent tolerance of heat and cold. Your dogs will need to have a good exercise regimen especially outdoors. They need to have high physical exercise if you want them to stay fit, healthy, and mentally stimulated. You can start by walking them at least twice a day for at least an hour. You can also opt to jog with your Shottie because experts also recommended that they are involved in high impact and fast-paced exercises. Like most dogs, they also enjoy playing games like balls and fetch at public parks. This can help their mind active and their muscles lean. Always remember that your pet is prone to obesity so satisfying their exercise regimen is important. Rottweiler Crossbred with German Shepherd Training Since its parent breeds are famous for their protective instincts, the chances are that the puppy will also inherit them. For this reason, you should socialize your puppy at a young age so prevent their aggressive tendencies and have them get used to the presence of other animals and people. The training your Shottie will receive highly depends on your intention for adopting the dog. First, you must ask yourself if you want them to become a guard dog or a companion dog. Positive reinforcement such as rewards and praises are highly recommended in training your pet. Here are some of the effective methods in which you can teach your dog: The Mark Good Behavior Method — Pick out a unique sound for your dog and chime it whenever your dog does something right. You can use it so that your puppy will learn that music means a reward is coming. Eventually, you can use it along with command words. The Mirror Me Method — If your dog is glued to you all the time, you can use this chance to teach them how to behave through mimicry. The Tied To You Method — If you intent your dog to become a companion dog, keep him tied to you most of the time and try to build communication and trust with them. German Shepherd Crossbreed with Rottweiler and Families One of the many ways that you can adopt a Rottman Shepherd is through rescue shelters but be careful in picking one. You must be well aware of its upbringing and temperament because there is a chance that these dogs were abandoned because of behavioral issues as a result mainly of lack of training, poor obedience, lack of socialization, or sometimes, even aggression. With small kids, it can be hard to control them because they are quite large. They might become overwhelming for the children. On the other hand, they are also in need of a company most of the time because they tend to become destructive if bored. With proper training at a young age, they can become beautiful guard dogs that are active. They can also provide families with good companionship as they love creatures.

Crate training will keep your pug protected from household hazards, help with house training, and give him a place to retreat when he's overly excited. An ideal crate size is 24 inches long x 18 inches wide x 21 inches high 61 cm x 46 cm x 53cm. Place a blanket on top of the crate so it feels like a cozy den to your pug. Leave the crate door open at all times during this part of crate training. This will allow your pug to explore the crate at his leisure, without fear of you closing the door behind him. For crate training to be effective, your pug must learn to be comfortable in the crate when its door is closed. Gradually, have your pug wait up to 10 minutes after a meal before you open the door. You may need to leave your pug crated for hours at a time during the day, and maybe overnight. Sit with him briefly, leave the room for few minutes, then return to the crate. Work up to leaving the room for 30 minutes. Reward him with a treat each time he responds to it correctly. Practice leaving the house when you crate him. Do not get your pug worked up when you leave home or return; this could build up a lot of anxiety and anticipation in your pug. A common concern with crate training is whether to respond to whining, especially with overnight crating. Just be prepared for the whining to get worse before it gets better. Pugs aim to please, but can get sidetracked by a short attention span. When your pug stays focused on your finger on your nose, immediately give him a treat. Lengthen the time he watches your finger before you reward him. When your pug learns the basic commands, he will have the proper foundation to behave well and learn even more commands. Basic commands include sit, stay, come, and heel. If his short attention span is making training difficult, consider enrolling him in a local dog obedience class. Use plenty of positive reinforcement verbal praise, treats, extra petting each time your pug correctly follows a command. The more excited and positive you are, the more your pug will try to please you and behave properly. Pugs love to chew. Teaching your pug to 'leave it' will help keep him from chewing something inappropriate e. If you cannot stay with your pug all day and take him outside frequently, gate off an area in your home for him to stay during the day. Place some pee pads in the corner of this space where he can eliminate. When your pug urinates, the urine would go through the grass into the underlying tray. Place his water bowl and bed in the gated area. Without knowing when he should eliminate, your pug may have accidents in your home more often. A consistent bathroom routine is very important for puppies, since they cannot hold their bladders for very long. If you have a pug puppy, take him out first thing in the morning, 15 to 20 minutes after eating, after naps, and before bedtime. As he gets a little older and has better bladder control, you can start leaving his water in the crate overnight. The indoor gated area lessens the need for frequent outings during the day. However, it may take longer to house train your pug if he gets used to eliminating on pee pads or in the litter box. Your pug should learn to eliminate in the same area each time you take him outside. If you have a backyard, take him out on a 6-foot 2-meter leash, stand in one area of your yard, and let him pick a specific spot within a 6-foot radius of the leash. Examples of this body language are sniffing around, looking for a private place, going to the door, and whining. Give him a treat and verbal praise when he eliminates so he makes a positive association with eliminating outside. When you reward him for eliminating, he will also be learning how to respond to your command. It can take time—up to 20 minutes—for your pug to relax enough to eliminate outside. If you become impatient, you may experience what many other dog owners have experienced: elimination as soon as the dog gets back inside. Twenty minutes can feel like an eternity, so bring something with you e. If you pug has an accident and he probably will clean it up promptly with an enzymatic cleaner that will erase the urine smell. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source If your pug smells the urine, he will likely go back to that spot to eliminate. Do not punish your pug, whether you catch him in the act or not. Doing so will make him fear you, rather than teach him not to have another accident. Your adult pug may have had some previous training, but it may not have been completed or consistently reinforced. Ask the rescue group or animal shelter from where you adopted your pug about what types of additional training he will need. Be patient with your adult pug during the training process. If your adult pug was mistreated by his previous owner, he may be extra sensitive to yelling or harsh punishment. If you have other household members, have them all train your adult pug. How To Discipline a Pug The following are some examples of constructive methods to discipline a pug: 1. Create clear rules for the pug to follow Rules, limitations, and boundaries are the first things you think about when thinking of how to discipline a pug. Draw up a list of pet-related house rules and post it someplace everyone in your family can see it to avoid giving your pug inconsistent messages. Examples of rules include: Kitchen cabinets will not be jumped on. Outside of the potty area, there is no going potty. It is not a good idea to beg for food. There will be no leaping from the tops of television stands. The furniture will not be scratched in any way. There will be no skipping of meals. No food shall be eaten on the floor. Because pugs are intelligent and demanding, this will always be perceived as an invitation to take command. You may stamp your authority and address undesirable habits by combining your emotions and actions with stated directives. Your pug has to realize that you are serious about obedience and will not beg for it. Develop a stop sign or word Using and developing a clear stop word or stop sign can make things easier when thinking of how to discipline a pug. Make sure that your pug understands and associates your stop word or sign with the cessation of their undesirable activities. Changing mindsets or action plans may help in the long term, but consistency and focus yield speedier results. Positive conduct should be acknowledged frequently in order to encourage your pug to seek out solid ties in the future. Use positive reinforcement regularly Striking or yelling at your pug gives off negative vibes and fosters bad behavior. Positive reinforcement, such as giving your pug an enjoyable activity to complete, should be used instead of correcting bad behavior. This change will allow you to rectify undesirable behavior while also fostering new, more desirable conduct. Educating your pug as quickly as possible might help it make the link, but the rule may take a few repetitions to sink in. Put your pug on a time-out If your pug is being hyperactive, harassing another pet, or disobeying your commands, give it a 60 secs time-out. It may be essential to repeat the approach several times until your pug recognizes its turn has arrived as a result of certain behavior. Ascertain that your pug knows how to respond to different voice tones and what each tone signifies. Therefore, if you want your pug to stop doing something, use a firm voice and a stop word. This is particularly useful for pugs that are aggressive toward humans and may bite or grip your arm or leg. Reward all submissive behavior Keep in mind that encouraging submissive behavior will benefit both you and your pug. Teaching your pug to respect you as the alpha should be a pleasurable experience. Grooming and praising your pug is one way to show him that you care. Never punish your pug by plunging its mouth into his or her own excrement or urine. Do not scold or hit your pug as a form of punishment. Never leave your pug alone in the house for too long as a punishment. Euthanizing your pug for whatever reason is never a good idea. Post navigation. How to Discipline a Pug Overview It would be nice if our Pug puppies and dogs would automatically listen well at all times, however this certainly is not usually the case. While there are some things that a dog can instinctively know, many things do need to be taught. And part of teaching a puppy or older dog is the chosen method that is used for discipline. Whether your Pug is biting, nipping, destructively chewing, barking, excessively licking you or having bathroom accidents… the way that you correct your Pug will play a huge role in how well you can teach him right from wrong. In this section we are going to cover: Commonly used methods of disciplining a dog and exactly why these techniques do not work The 3 things that a Pug needs to truly learn something The most effective way to discipline your Pug for fast success Discipline Methods that do NOT Work and Why There are many ways to discipline a dog; however the problem is that many of the commonly used methods rarely work. If you use any of these techniques, things can backfire. In addition, new issues can arise. Timothy Photo courtesy of Diane Darch Never do physical intervention, slapping the Pug's bum or tapping the nose- Some owners will slap a puppy's rear end or thump a dog's nose as a way to 'spank' a dog and let them know that they did something wrong. Whether you use your hand, a newspaper or another item that you deem 'safe' this is a form of physical abuse since there is no clear line of what hurts and what does not. Having the intention of hurting a dog is a cruelty to animals. And if your intention is to simply startle the dog into listening, this will not solve that the original issue that you are trying to correct. In addition, dogs that are hit in any fashion may have eventually have increased aggression. Never yell - When things seem out of control, it's easy to lose your cool. Yelling at a Pug will often scare him and this may appear to work at first. After all, a dog that is screamed at will stop what he is doing…however he will have no idea why you are yelling or what you are saying. Being shouted at will increase his anxiety and stress level, which decreases his ability to focus and learn. Never give timeouts in severe isolation - There are two types of isolation discipline methods: physical and social. Physical isolation involves placing the Pug into a small area such as a crate that is away from other family members both human and animals. This does not work, because when a dog is punished in this way, he will often become scared and anxious. He will have no clue as to why he has been 'locked away'. A Pug will be under duress during this time and will only be focused on getting free, not on learning what was expected of him. Social isolation is a different type of discipline and we will go into that ahead. Never take away a toy - Dogs have very few possessions in comparison to us humans. They have their beds, their food and water bowls and their toys. Beds are for comfort, food and water of course is for survival and toys are a dog's most prized possessions as they can become very attached to them. Can you make a Pug listen by taking away a favorite toy? This does not work because one of two things will happen: 1 If the Pug cares about what just happened, it moves the dog into a mindset of wanting to have his toy back, when this time could be better spent actually teaching the Pug what he did wrong and what he should be doing instead or 2 Some Pugs will take this in stride because there are other toys to play with and if you take away all of his toys, he may very well think you are just playing some sort of odd game. Again, there are better ways to discipline your Pug that actually work well. Never rub a Pug's nose in his feces or urine - Far too many people think that this works when a dog has a bathroom accident and this may be due to copying what they saw their parents or grandparents doing in the past. Before the wonderful invention of computers and the transition of having them everywhere yeah, there was a time like that! Sure, some dog owners would purchase training books, however the majority of them just did what they saw others do due to a lack of knowledge regarding proper training methods. This is an old-fashioned punishment that can scare the heck out of a dog or confused him and it does not work. While it may make perfect sense to you that your Pug should only pee or poo in a designated outdoor area, your puppy or dog will not know the difference between that spot of grass and the carpeting in your living room unless he is clearly taught. And while it may seem logical to you that your Pug should not chew on the leg of the kitchen table, he has no idea why that is wrong, but chewing on a toy is okay, unless it is clearly taught to him. The reason why all of the above listed punishments do not work, is because while they may startle a dog, or scare him or even make him know that he misbehaved, they do not show him what he should do instead. Bubloo, 9 months old Photo courtesy of The Krish's Family In addition, for a Pug to be well-behaved, he needs to respect his leader, which will cause him to want to listen. If a dog is punished in a way that causes fear, he will be afraid of his leader which is not the same as respecting him. If a Pug has full run of a house and access to everything in it, he will have so many choices that he's bound to do things wrong. With 4, 5 or 6 rooms to possibly pee or poo in, if he has to go, surely he will not automatically wait until he is taken out or go right over to pee pads. If he has access to laundry piles thrown on the floor, how will he know that those are not 'toys' left out for him? This should be placed in well-lit room that is commonly used by the family such as the kitchen or living room. In cases of a Pug moving the pad onto his bed some do this as if it is a blanket or chewing it up, it can help to 1 duct tape the pad securely in place works with hardwood or linoleum floors or 2 forgo the pad and simply place the gates in the kitchen where the floor is easy to clean or on top of an appropriately sized cut-out piece of linoleum this can be purchased at a home supply store. Keep in mind that housebreaking is a temporary phase and by the age of 9 months or so, a puppy can hold his needs for 8 hours or so while you are at work. If not, how else is he to learn right from wrong? However, this should be done with the owner as his guide and along with discipline methods as shown ahead. An email from an owner comes to mind that let us know that his young Pug puppy that was in his teething phase, kept chewing his shoes. He had a collection of running shoes that he liked to place in a row near the front door for easy access when he'd leave the house. Any time that he turned his back on his Pug, the puppy would scamper over to the shoes and start chewing on them. The question was: how to discipline the puppy to stop doing that. While he could have put a lot of effort into teaching the lesson between those shoes and toys and it would have eventually worked… it was a lot easier to simply move the shoes to a shelf or onto a stand-up shoe rack where they were no longer accessible. The lesson here is to choose your battles wisely, especially with a teething puppy. Not only should the house be puppy-proofed, all objects that can be tucked away, should be. Leaving a Pug with tons of chewing options aside from toys is the canine equivalent of letting a child loose in a candy store. Non-movable objects such as furniture legs, that dogs for some reason love chewing on, can be sprayed with a safe deterrent spray; apple bitter works well for this. Velvet, 10 months old Photo courtesy of Abby 2 Stop. You do want a method to stop your Pug from doing an action that is wrong. There are 2 ways to do this. In some cases, an effective discipline method is to clap loudly. This works well for house training and chewing issues. Clapping is usually enough to startle a Pug momentarily, which is all that you need as long as you are ready for the next discipline step. You can add a firm 'No! For nipping and other such behavior , if a clap does not work, simply standing up from a sitting position may be enough to stop a Pug, since you are limiting his ability to reach you. If the puppy is really out of control, this would be the time to instill the social isolation discipline that we touched on above. This involves placing him in his playpen for a short while. In either case of standing or putting him in his pen, part of this will involve ignoring him. You may wonder how in the world ignoring a dog will teach him anything. To a dog, his humans and any other animals in the house are his 'pack' and being part of the pack is everything… It is his safety, his security and his family. When a dog is ignored, he will start to worry that he is being banned from his pack and this will cause him to rethink his behavior. You do not need to do this for very long… some Pugs notice right away and others take much longer to figure out that they are not being spoken to, etc…. A dog will never learn what he is supposed to do, unless it is shown to him. While words such as 'No' can cause a Pug to pause, the most important part of discipline is to clearly show your Pug what you expect. Just as important, a dog needs to understand why he should do it. Give a Pug motivation and a reason to follow the rules, and you'll find success every time. It's really that easy: Show what to do and why to do it. Once he has noticed that he is being 'temporarily banned from the pack' as described earlier, and you let 5 minutes go by, allow him access to you again. If he nips again right away, he is ignored again and this time for the maximum of 10 minutes. If he behaves well, after just one minute of good behavior reward him with praise and a small treat if he needs extra motivation. Say a word that he can learn to associate the action with such as "Bathroom"… and as he is peeing, give praise that includes the affirmation of what he is doing by saying "Good, bathroom. Good boy, you're going to the bathroom! Immediately offer him a tempting chew toy. As soon as he mouths it, praise him in a happy voice as if he is doing the most wonderful thing in the world. While it may seem a bit silly to act so happy that a dog is playing with a toy, when you are teaching right from wrong, Pugs learn best if an appropriate action is met with tons of enthusiasm and delight. Once the dog has had a few weeks to learn what is expected, you can tone things down and give 'normal' positive reinforcement with a simple 'Good boy' or 'Good girl'. Do make a note to apply apple bitter spray or other safe deterrent on any non-movable item that seems to be too tempting to your Pug for him to leave alone. You have a new member of your family and you choose the right method of disciplining and training your Pug. Using inhumane methods can also lead to hurt feelings, lack of trust, and anxiety. However, there have been several studies that have shown that dogs learn faster using positive reinforcement training. Discover the Pug training secrets that dog trainers everywhere use for all dogs, regardless of breed. What Is Positive Reinforcement Training? Pugs respond best to positive reinforcement training. You do so by using force-free, reward-based or clicker training that lets your Pug know when they have done something correctly. This method of canine training has been widely used on the training of police dogs, guide dogs, sniffer dogs and more because it works for discipline and developing a well-behaved dog. Just like people like to be rewarded when they do something correctly, so do dogs. I did, and it took me a while to fully understand what positive reinforcement really meant, or how to get started with it. Just make sure that you use small amounts as Pugs are prone to obesity. Give Them Physical Attention — A belly rub or hug goes a long way with this breed. Well, dogs are no different. There have been several studies that have shown that reward-based training can result in good outcomes. You can correct erroneous behavior by simply using treats or praise. Whereas using punishment such as leash jerking, hitting, scolding, slapping, or using a shock collar can have more negative effects. This form of discipline is associated with feelings of avoidance and negativity causing your pooch to become anxious or scared of you. Successful punishment or redirection is necessary to stop unpleasant and undesirable behavior. Punishment should only take place while the behavior is occurring, so your pet learns which behavior is NOT wanted. With consistent disciplinary methods, your pet will learn to cease the unwanted behavior or avoid the situation. That being said, you should avoid using physical or direct interactive punishment as it may cause your pet to become fearful of you or people in general. A dog may also become defensive when being punished, which may lead to aggressive behaviors. Punishment vs. Discipline When done correctly, punishment can be humane. Disciplinary methods that are considered to be positive and do not have any negative effects on dogs are: Taking their toys away Time-outs Ignoring or avoiding contact with your dog when they misbehave Using your voice to redirect and stop unwanted behavior, instead of using physical punishment for your dog. All the methods mentioned above are both humane and highly effective to help you turn your terror dog into a well-behaved member of your family. Here are some other methods you should avoid when training your pooch. Your first instinct is to yell. Yes, they will stop doing whatever it is they are doing, however, they will have no idea why you yelled at them. It will only increase their stress level and can cause anxiety. When you use a newspaper, stick, or your hand to discipline your four-legged friend, it is considered a form of physical abuse. Pugs are small dogs and while you may think you lightly tapped them, you can do some serious physical damage to them. Plus using this form of behavioral training may end up backfiring and cause your dog to become aggressive. Avoid The Alpha Dog Approach Some people prefer to take the alpha dog approach to show their dog that they are the boss. These methods will not work and will only cause your Pug to become scared of you and may lead to anxiety. This brachycephalic dog breed has trouble breathing, to begin with, and using an apparatus like that can just lead to more health issues. Misbehaving On A Walk Pugs can be stubborn, especially, if they have not been properly leash trained. Once they start listening and doing what you want them to do, make sure you reward them and let them know you approve. When you find your puppy chewing on your slippers or socks because they are fuzzy and they smell just like you do. Your first instinct might be to yell, but instead, remove the slipper from her mouth and redirect her toward a toy. Always encourage and praise her once she moves on to the toy you just gave her. Going Potty Indoors This is a very common problem among new dog owners, especially, when you just bring your puppy home. You will only scare them and they will just cower away from you when you approach them. Instead, interrupt what they are doing and take them outside. When she does her business outside, praise them and let them know they did a great job! You can even give her a small treat to show her that you approve of what she just did. Get up immediately and put them in their playpen and avoid speaking or making eye contact with them. If she does it again, repeat the process, but this time increase the time out to 10 minutes. Whenever you see your Pug on the couch or trying to get on the couch, gently pick her up and take her to her bed. Tell her to stay and give her a toy or a treat. Keep repeating the process over and over until she learns that she is not allowed on the couch and to use her canine bed instead. You should start disciplining your puppy as soon as you bring them home. Puppies tend to learn quickly and the sooner you can teach them which behavior is unacceptable, the happier you both will be. Nope, it just takes patience and consistency as this breed is a little more stubborn than other breeds. However, they are a member of your family and they need to learn and follow the rules. The time you spend training her properly, will not only improve their overall behavior but will strengthen the bond you share. Just remember to be patient and give your dog time to learn what you expect of them. It takes time to properly discipline a dog and Pugs can be stubborn! Elgier, Alba E. By: David Codr Published Date: October 10, For this Los Angeles dog training session we were called in to train a dog 5 year-old Pug Graceee to behave at the door, stop getting excited and put an end to her nuisance barking. When I asked the guardians what Rules Graceee had, they exchanged bewildered looks at one another before saying there were none. While this was going on, Graceee excitedly ran around the room looking for anyone who would pet her. As a dog behavior expert, I learned a long time ago that anything your dog is doing when you pet it is what you are rewarding or enhancing. This includes excitement, aggression, anxiety, etc. I made sure to point out that by petting Graceee when she was excited was actually rewarding her for being an excited dog. I showed the guardians a number of dog behavior tricks and tips to help them reward her for displaying desired behaviors instead of those they wanted to stop. I also went over new ways to communicate and disagree with the dog. When I made the sound I use to disagree, Graceee was taken aback and it had a profound effect on her behavior in a positive way. You can watch this door behavior training video below. By increasing the distance and training the dog to behave at the door in small individual steps, I was able to get Graceee to behave, not get over excited which allowed her to calm down faster. Another activity that got the dog excited, was going for a walk. Because Pugs have large heads and small necks, I fitted Graceee up with a Martingale collar, then went over the 5 rules for a structured walk I like to use with a Martingale. Using the Martingale and helping Graceee learn she had to be calm before we started our walk made all the difference. Instead of an excited dog running all over, her guardians had the dog walking next to them in a nice heel. By the end of the session, Graceee was following he new rules and structure we introduced the session. Her guardians were reading her body language and communicating with her in a way that she understood, respected and responded to. We wrapped up the session by shooting a roadmap to success video outlining all the positive dog training tips I shared with her guardians during this LA dog training session. Share this:. If you put the hard work in with them early on, the way you train and raise them will lead to positive behavior for the remainder of their lives. Pugs can be very stubborn and have a character that can naturally lead them into trouble! Good training and discipline should never be confused with physical punishment and loud shouting. No dog reacts well to aggressive behavior, and in fact can mirror back anger with barking and possibly even biting. You can punish a Pug, but not in the way you think. Instead you use discipline without anything that will hurt or scare them. And this is exactly what I will explain today, with a guide that shows you how to discipline a Pug, leading to a well behaved and happy dog. There is no physical punishment involved, and it never should be with dogs. How do you discipline a Pug puppy without punishment? As you know, Pugs are stubborn little characters meaning it can be a struggle to get them to behave well at the right moments. But, with patience, perseverance, and a consistent approach to discipline it is possible to reduce unwanted behavior, You will need to: Only ever discipline your Pug at the point the problem occurred to help them relate the two actions. Always use positive reinforcement after they have done something positive. Be consistent with the way you discipline your Pug including your body language and a firm tone of voice. Never resort to shouting and hitting as this will get the opposite response to the one you want. Pug discipline tips Use the following tips with your Pug and you should never need to physically punish them. Not that you should ever hit a dog anyway! You might come home to find paperwork shredded, furniture torn, and shoes chewed up. Pugs do have good memories, but no dog will be able to reconcile you punishing them for something that they did earlier that day. Instead you need to act in the moment and discipline your Pug at the time with firm words and body language which are described in tip 2. Use firm body language and tone of voice Dogs will pick up on the most subtle of changes in your body language and voice. This is an effective way of disciplining a Pug as they will hear the change in your voice and see the change in your face. Disciplining your Pug in this way will help to cement your position in the household as the alpha dog and pack leader. If you end up shouting and hitting all you are doing is becoming a threat to the dog, making them more anxious. This can only exacerbate the behavioral problems you wanted to eliminate. Handy Hint: Your dog should respect you as the leader in the house. Here are the signs you can look for to make sure your dog considers you the alpha. Then on Saturday your Pug jumps up to stranger and puts his dirty paws all over their trousers… and you tell them off. Your Pug is getting mixed messages. This mixed approach to training is one of the biggest mistakes you can make with your Pug. When our dog was a puppy I would play fight with him in our lounge, encouraging him to nip at my hands. I should never have started this game though… When my puppy got to 5 months old, the teeth were sharper and his jaw a lot stronger. But he still wanted to play the same game, but it was now a problem as you can imagine. You need to be very consistent with any Pug discipline. If you stick to the same approach each time, results will come a lot quicker. Use positive reinforcement After you have disciplined your Pug and are heading towards the behavior you desire, always reward them with positive reinforcement when they do well. Dogs can be trained to respond to a treat or the promise of a treat. Dogs also respond well to just words of encouragement and praise each time they get something right. Take breaks and give them a timeout You can also teach your Pug good behavior by using verbal hints and time outs. After doing this a few times, you can teach your Pug that if they bite you or do something naught during play, then the fun stops. Time outs are brilliant ways to punish Pugs; 5 minutes probably feels like 5 hours! Try using a squirt bottle or water pistol Some Pug owners use a water pistol to discourage bad behavior. Use distraction methods As a last resort, you can use distraction to stop a Pug doing something bad. For example, my dog loves sticks. I used it last week when we were at our local park and my dog went to steal a sandwich from a young couple having a picnic. Never shout at your Pug. Never hit or hurt your Pug. Never drag or jerk your Pug on their leash. Never chase after your Pug. Never use electric shock collars with your Pug legal in the US still. Conclusion Many Pug owners will know how hard this breed can be to train. But if you stick with at it, it will be worth in the long run and save you a lot of problems in the future. That can make it harder to get them to rectify any bad behavior, instead making them scared when shouting and hitting is used. Instead use timely discipline and positive reinforcement. This is the best way to discipline a Pug puppy and will result in a very happy dog… and owner! You might also like…. Ways To Discipline a Pug The following are some common ways to discipline a pug the right way: 1. Create house rules and stick to it One of the best ways to discipline a pug is to never allow any unwanted behaviors around you and your pug. The easiest way to do this is to make a set of house rules that your pug should follow. Without house rules, you will have trouble living with pets, especially pugs who have dominance issues. Here are some things to keep in mind: Always keep your dog on a leash when in public. Clean up after your dog. Do not leave your dog alone in the house. Do not let your dog roam free. Train your dog in obedience. This will encourage him to keep up his end of the bargain and continue doing things right. Remember to make your corrections when your pug is doing what you dislike and not after his done. Choose a word of praise to associate with good behavior Choose a word of praise to associate with good behavior, also make sure your pug gets used to the word. This is especially important if your dog has been using naughty words and bad manners because you want to allow her to associate positive things with those words and behaviors. Ignore bad behavior Sometimes you will get better results if you ignore bad behavior in your pug. It is important not to become angry with your dog because this only encourages him or her to repeat the same behavior again. Instead, ignore their bad behaviors and try again later on when things have calmed down a bit more after having been corrected the first time around which should happen eventually. Yelling is not effective when trying to teach an animal a lesson—they can sense when someone is upset and scared. So they will react accordingly by being more aggressive or stubborn than normal. Hitting dogs sends mixed signals about how serious things are; hitting sends mixed signals about what kind of behavior brings on physical punishment. Always use positive reinforcement One of the most important things you can do for your dog is to provide positive reinforcement training. This means rewarding your dog when he or she does what you want them to do. This can be done in a number of ways, but the most important thing is to make sure that the rewards are appropriate for your dog and that they are given frequently. One of the best ways to provide positive reinforcement for your dog is to use treats. This can be as simple as giving your dog a biscuit after he or she has done something you want them to do. Or as complex as setting up a special game where your dog gets a treat for getting a certain result. Give your pug a 60 seconds time-out Give your pug a second time-out if it is acting hyperactively, bothering another pet, or violating your commands. It could be necessary to repeat the strategy multiple times before your pug understands that its turn has come as a result of particular conduct. Give your pug a timeout while they are still acting inappropriately rather than after they have finished doing inappropriately. Be consistent when disciplining your dog When disciplining your dog, be consistent with your rules and punishments. This will help your dog learn that behavior is not always tolerated. You should also make sure your punishment is appropriate for the offense. For example, if your dog is barking, it may be best to use a verbal reprimand instead of a physical punishment such as a swat. Be consistent with your training. Make sure you are consistent with your training. Be consistent with your methods, rewards, and punishments. Learn more about the most important pug training tips. Never make your pug suffer by forcing its mouth into its own feces or urine. Avoid yelling at your pug as a form of discipline. A time-out for your pug should not last longer than 60 seconds. Avoid yelling at or punishing your pug physically. The tail of your pug should never be pulled. Never punish your pug by leaving him home alone for an extended period of time. No of the circumstances, euthanizing your pug is never a wise idea. Related Questions How can I discipline my Pug without being too harsh? Should I discipline my Pug for accidents or mistakes? Accidents and mistakes happen, especially with younger Pugs who are still learning. Instead of punishing your Pug, focus on preventing accidents by ensuring they have easy access to a designated potty area and are let out regularly. When accidents do happen, use positive reinforcement to encourage your Pug to go in the designated potty area instead. How can I stop my Pug from barking excessively? Excessive barking can be a problem with Pugs , but punishment is not the best method of dealing with it. Instead, try to identify the cause of the barking and address it. For example, if your Pug barks at strangers, you could socialize them to help them feel more at ease around people. Can I discipline my Pug after the fact for something they did wrong earlier? Instead, focus on preventing unwanted behavior in the future by using positive reinforcement to encourage better behavior and redirecting them when necessary. I love researching, writing, and teaching other pet owners how to care for their pets. Learn all about behavior modification and get great results in your Pug training. Plus, you and your Pug will love it. We do this by giving him something or taking something away. Punishments are anything that decreases behavior. Positive means to add or give something. Negative means to subtract or take something away. People have been using behavior modification for dogs since domestication started. Like most things in life, people can use it for good or harm. The theory is that if this occurs enough times, the dog will stop doing it in the future. Here are some examples: Spanking your dog after he pees on the floor. Tapping his nose when your puppy nips at you. Yelling at your dog to get off the furniture. Using a citronella collar to spray citronella when your dog barks. Holding your dog down in a dominant position until he calms down. Does Positive Punishment Work? A tap on the nose probably does not hurt your Pug. But it scares him. What do you think happens the next time Friday night pizza comes around? Is he going to remember getting tapped on the nose and not try to swipe that piece of pizza again? The answer is no. The smell and sight of that pizza are too rewarding. All he can think about is getting a bite of that pizza. You want to train your Pug, not hurt or scare your Pug. If I yell at them every time this happens, you would assume that the barking would stop. My yelling adds to the frenzy of the whole thing. That delivery person always leaves and never breaks into their territory. Is it my tail wagging, is it my barking? You yell and put her outside. You taught her to go to a different room to pooh. The Risks of Using Positive Punishment Using positive punishment can create fear, stress, and aggression. Often dogs will become more aggressive because they are afraid of you. They will be more vigilant about watching for cues that you are going to hurt him again. Causing harm makes them very cautious. You may think they are getting more aggressive. He may be trying to protect himself even more so now that you have become aggressive. This is not a good way to train your Pug. When he would see me roll up that newspaper, he would transform himself into a flying ninja. Across the room, he would fly at me, bite and tear-up the newspaper. So, between my parents and my dog, I learned to stop rolling up the damn newspaper and swatting him on the butt. The flying ninja dog once again became our sweet family dog. Number 2. For example, maybe he pushes his brother. The parent sees what happens and takes the toy away. Parents take things away all the time with teenagers. If their grades drop, they take the cell phone away. Then they take the cell phone away. All your other grades are good. The teenager needs to know they have to seek out a tutor or talk to the teacher for a better understanding of the work. She needs to apply effort when doing his homework, not just sit in his room thinking about how unfair his parents are. You turn your back on your Pug, withdrawing your attention. The idea is that he will be less likely to jump on you in the future. You forget all about turning your back on him. He has seen that you may give in. His jumping may increase for a while. Does Negative Punishment Work? Negative punishment can work if used correctly, consistently and immediately. This is a pretty tall order. Consistently means you train your Pug this way all the time, not just during Pug training sessions. You can pair negative punishment with positive reinforcement. Your Pug dog jumps on you, you move away, and you turn your back on him. We know our Pugs are the smartest of them all! But, this may take him a while to figure out what is going on. If you want to train your Pug dog to learn faster, turn your back when he jumps and turn back around when he stops. Then ask him to sit. This gives him more information on what you would like for him. When he politely sits, reinforce him positively with praise and attention. This is not a one-time event. It may take weeks to get them to stop jumping and sit instead, but in the end, it will be worth it. Do you want your Pug dog to jump all over you for the rest of your life? Or do you want a few weeks of hard work, followed by some excellent Pug politeness behavior? Number 3. Train your Pug Using Positive Reinforcers Positive reinforcers are when something good comes after a particular behavior. For example, if your child gets an A on her math, you take her out for ice cream that evening. Praising your child is another form of positive reinforcement. When your puppy goes pee outside, you praise her and give her a treat. She wants the food and praise, so eventually, she will learn to pee outside. Using treats is a good way to train your Pug to do her business outside. Does Positive Reinforcement Work? Praising and giving treats to your Pug dog helps them learn quickly. Once my Pugs learned they received a treat for sitting, they started sitting on their own when I was there. They see me go into the pantry where their cookies are; they sit and look attentively. This helps them learn that this is what is getting them treats. Proper timing is critical with positive reinforcement when you train your Pug. We were trying to increase the spinning behavior. Another said we should click or say yes when the dog had completed the spin. And then give the treat. I decided to go with when the spin was complete. I had no other reason than this is what Pat Miller teaches. Her training methods make sense to me. It works with my Pugs, and, most importantly, and enjoy our training sessions together. Check out Pat Miller to train your Pug. Number 4. Reinforcers are anything that increases specific behavior. It means the unpleasant event goes away after they do a specific behavior. Some dog trainers use choke collars. Some trainers say that if the dog is pulling on the leash, he will stop pulling to make the pain of the choke collar stop. All he has to do is top pulling, and the pain goes away. Is this true? Should you use negative reinforcers to train your Pug dog? Look at this image. It looks like the dogs have been pulling on the choke collars for some time. When he stops pulling, the pain goes away. However, when your Pug sees a squirrel or another dog walks by, he will not feel the pain as he is pulling. The motivation to pull is greater than the pain. Our Pug dogs may not be aware of the pain due to the excitement of seeing the squirrel. A brachycephalic dog may damage his windpipe before he realizes the pain that he is feeling. Do you think he will stop pulling on his leash? Highly unlikely. Choke collars are not a good way to train your Pug. Getting to that dog has a higher emotion than the pain occurring around his neck. He does not notice the pain. This is not how you train your Pug. What about when a big dog walks by during your afternoon walk with your Pugs? Going after a large dog is going to have a significant emotional response. Again, pronged collars are not a good way to train your Pug. What is going to have a more significant emotional response to get your dog to pay attention to you and not the big dog? In other words, how do you train your Pug so he pays attention to you? Become a Treat Dispenser Treats! When a large dog walks by, you want to turn into a treat dispenser. But generally, their feet stay next to their owner with the treats. I have tried this myself, and it works. When big dogs come around, we get lots of treats. In any event, it does keep them close to my side, not pulling on their leashes. Can you and I phase out the treats when a big dog walks by? In everything I have taught them, I have been able to phase out treats. I have replaced those treats with praise and attention. And the Winner Is … Positive Reinforcement!! Positive reinforcement great because your Pug dog gets treats and lots of praise! Also, it is the most effective method to train your Pug. They get treats! You see positive results! Positive reinforcement creates a stronger bond between you and your Pug dogs. They feel proud when they learn a new trick! There are still people who believe that it is not a good idea to train with treats. They think your dog will only perform if the cookies are in hand. I have never had a problem phasing out food rewards with Mimi and Lulu. And believe me, they are big chowhounds. When I phase out the treats correctly, they continue to show the requested behavior. However, we need to phase them out. You and I need to replace the treats with something else they desire. Start phasing out the treats when your Pug has generalized the behavior. That means he completes the behavior in different locations and different circumstances. This includes the collar on, off, inside, outside, on a walk, etc. High-value treats are expensive, soft treats, or any kind of meat. You want to mix it up in the beginning; half high value treats and half kibble. Move the treat from the hand you usually give the treat from, to the other hand. Then hold it behind your back. Have him maintain the sit for longer and longer periods before giving the treat. Amp up your verbal praise when you give the treat. Start to replace your food reward with verbal praise and a big pet. Praise is a great way to train your Pug. If your Pug dog has a favorite toy or game, replace the treat with a toy or a game of fetch. Intermittent Reinforcement Make the treat rewards unpredictable. Intermittent reinforcement is when the rewards are unpredictable. Decrease giving treats over a few days until your Pug dog sits whenever asked. Your Pug the star of the show, and he will think you are too with those random yummy treats. Think about casinos. Why do people keep putting so much money into those slot machines when they lose more time than win? It may feel to the person play the slots that they are winning here and there, and the big win is just around the corner! These are all programmed to give out a small cash reward on a schedule. People get hooked because of the timing of the little rewards and jackpots. The customers get rewarded enough to keep coming back, but not too much, so the casino loses money. Treating our Pug dogs like Casino slot machine patrons may feel wrong. You simply want to train your Pug to stay at a healthy weight and not spend the rest of your life dispensing treats. Conclusion There are four basic types of behavior modification. Some of these behavior modification interventions harm your dog physically or emotionally. We want to be sure to avoid those. These are Positive Punishment and Negative Reinforcers. These interventions hurt and scare our Pugs. Negative punishment can be useful. Negative means remove something, and punishment means to decrease a behavior. Negative punishment works best when paired with Positive Reinforcement. With negative punishment, we may turn our back on our dog who is jumping on us. This is why we add Positive Reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is the winning intervention. Give your Pug something good yummy chicken , and Pug dogs learn to do the behavior we are looking for more often. It could be a sit, high five, or whatever fun trick you would like to teach. This is the fastest way to train your Pug. Some people get too hung up that the dog will never perform without the treats. Not true. Our Pugs are emotional creatures. When we have a positive relationship with him, he wants to please us. We can replace those treats with verbal praise and other rewards. Not only is Positive reinforcement the kindest method of them all, but it is also the most effective.

But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. Now you just need to find the right breeder to ensure that new puppy is healthy, happy, and ready to join your family. There are a few factors you should take into account when looking for the best French bulldog breeders. Here are some things you should consider: AKC Registration The AKC American Kennel Club is an organization that educates about the health and wellbeing of dogs, alongside advocating for responsible ownership. They take being a dog owner seriously, raising massive amounts of money for health research studies into the top diseases suffered by dogs. Many breeders will have their puppies AKC registered to guarantee that they're purebred, so be sure to ask about it when learning more about breeders you're considering adopting from. Genetic Health Issues A major concern when adopting dogs, purebred or not, is that they may be vulnerable to genetic health issues. Genetic health issues like hip dysplasia, heart disease, and epilepsy can be devastating, but adopting from a great breeder can save you the heartache later on. Be sure to ask breeders if they're conscious of these issues while breeding, and if they safely DNA test their pups to ensure that they're clear of these genetic health issues. Socialization Puppies should stay with their mother, littermates and breeder for eight weeks before joining a new family. While this may vary depending on the breed, eight weeks is what's healthy for a French bulldog puppy. If a breeder is allowing puppies to be adopted before then, that may be a red flag that they're not following industry best practices. Those eight weeks are crucial for a young puppy to develop their social skills with their littermates. If a puppy isn't socialized before joining a new family, they may experience unneeded distress and have difficulty interacting with other dogs. They could also be difficult to train. A Happy, Humane Environment When choosing a breeder, it should be your top priority to ensure that your new puppy is coming from a place where they're treated with respect and affection. The breeding profession is largely composed of dog lovers, but there's always going to be people who are willing to mistreat their puppies to increase their profits. Family-oriented businesses are usually a safe bet. This doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be run by a family, but are the puppies treated as if they were already in their forever homes? Are they given lots of love and attention? Are they kept apart from each other and always in distress? Cruelty has no place in breeding programs. Negligent practices only result in hurt and poorly adjusted puppies. The health and happiness of these pups is our top priority, and we're proud to be their home until you come to get them! I am constantly stopped on the street and asked about where I got mochi and Zima. They are perfect and deb has been super helpful each step of the way with the process and answered any question I had. Margret C. My 14 yr old English Bulldog, Elliemae, passed away October 14, .I was waiting until the summer of before getting another puppy. At the end of October, I came across Deb's web page. I called her only to get to know her and her breeding program. I told her about the loss of Elliemae and also my mother that past April. She said she had a French Bulldog puppy she thought I would be interested in. I explained that I would be holding off purchasing a puppy until the summer. She sent the picture of this white French bulldog puppy with the "Kiss of God" on the top of her head. Just like Elliemae. It was as if Elliemae and my mother were telling me this puppy is for you. I picked up Dolly the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Dolly has been a joy. She is a wonderful puppy who fills my days with joy. Deb has been wonderful as well. I am afraid I at times I talked her ear off. She is dedicated to breeding the finest French Bulldogs and knows what puppy needs to go with who. She is more than a breeder she is a friend. Thank you, Deb, for matching me up with this gift from my mother. You knew what I needed. Dollylee is an amazing puppy. She slept all through the night from the first night I brought her home. Dollylee seems to know why you sent her to me. Thank You, Deb!! Ron For several years I searched for a reputable French bulldog breeder and finally found Bijou French bulldogs. I knew the minute I finished reading through the website that I would one day purchase a puppy from Deb. We previously had a Frenchie with neurological and other health issues so we learned the hard way how important it is to choose a reputable and knowledgeable breeder. I continued looking at her website from time to time. Then one day Deb posted a breeding that sounded perfect. I got in touch with her and explained the importance to me of finding a breeder that took pride in their breeding program. She answered all of my questions and I was sold. So the deposit was paid and our precious Augie came into our lives. If you are seriously looking for a French bulldog, I strongly encourage you to get in touch with Deb. She will be available to answer your questions and will address any concerns. She has always shown concern and has amazing knowledge and insight about the breed. I know she will always be available for me with any questions I have, big or small. Thank You Deb! Deb understood and remained in contact with us answering questions and offering advice, and when she had the puppy we immediately knew was meant to be ours she continued to update us on progress until Blanche was ready to come home. Deb is very knowledgeable about the breed and her attention to details regarding their health really impressed us. Deb made the entire process seamless, and Blanche is the most perfect little lady. When the time comes to add to our own family we will definitely be calling Deb! I found Deb and from day one, she was always there to answer any questions. She was just a pleasure and always helpful! We purchased and picked up LUlu, our new wonderful addition to our family. She is so smart and has an absolutely amazing disposition. Everywhere I go with her, I get stopped, people always comment that she is the most beautiful frenchie ever even my vet! We cannot wait to get a second frenchie from Deb! Michelle We came across Deb while we were searching for our first frenchie. We contacted Deb and spoke on the phone for about an hour and a half during our first phone call. She was super supportive, informative and incredibly helpful in providing advice. She also asked us questions to make sure we were the right fit and if we would provide a safe environment for the frenchie. We got to meet Uniii through Facetime and we immediately fell in love with him at first sight. We were so impressed with Deb's knowledge about this breed, her love and passion for each and everyone of them. Whenever we had questions, Deb would answer back right away and would give us tips which has helped us tremendously. When we take Uniii out and about, people are always so impressed with how calm and good temperament he is. Uniii is super friendly and loves to be around people. He loves learning new tricks, in fact, he is so smart that I was able to teach him basic commands like 'paw' and 'sit' at 6 months. He is so easy, mellow and chill to take care of, that we are thinking of getting him another sibling for him. It will definitely be through Deb again. Thank you so much to Bijou French Bulldogs for providing us with our very first frenchie fur baby. Feel free to follow our pup on IG as well and reach out if you have any questions uniiiboiii Venus As first time dog owners, we did a lot of research before settling on a breeder. When we came across Bijou French Bulldogs and spoke to Deb, we knew we found the one. We could have gone with a number of breeders much closer to home but the decision to go the distance was extremely worth it! Deb's knowledge of the breed, care for the animals, and beautiful dogs are unmatched. She was extremely response throughout the whole process. Our beautiful girl is now 1. Our vet always comments on how well bred she was and how great it is to see a Frenchie without breathing problems. If I ever wanted another Frenchie I would definitely go back to Deb and recommend her to anyone looking for their new best friend! He is really an extraordinary dog who has made our lives so much better. Since I am now a French bulldog owner, I am more aware of other French bulldogs and can appreciate the superb breeding strategies that Debbie practices in her business. While I know that everyone thinks their dog is the best, I can objectively say that his form is perfection, from tail to ears. Not always the case with this breed, as we all know. We get stopped everywhere and people just cannot get enough of NiRAN. He is another great example of a gorgeous Frenchie in the making, and NiRAN loves to play with his new cousin. Thanks to Bijou French Bulldogs, we have our own little best friend who loves to snooze, snack, and play! Marina Deb is an absolutely pleasure and a dream come true to work with! She is hands on from beginning to getting your furbaby but even afterwards she is still involved. The furbabies she develops are all beautiful and healthy. If we could buy more we sure would!! Our experience has been amazing ever step of the way. We highly recommend her! Call me if you need to discuss Denise Denise Deb!!! Such a pleasure to share a testimonial. You can use the pic I just barely sent above? Deb was such an incredible person to work with to find our new family member. With a previous frenchie crossing the rainbow bridge we were feeling super nervous trying to find a reputable breeder that would be willing to answer lots of questions and truly help us though what was both an emotional and exciting process. She was endlessly available and highly engaged in our efforts to understand how to best match her upcoming litters with our interest. You can tell she cares so deeply about the health and wellness of each one of these little nuggets she helps bring into the world and even more, really looks to build a relationship and keep in touch with her puppies families. We feel so fortunate to have found Deb and our little fur baby! Jayme Mellisa Testimonial: Deb is a wonderful, caring and responsible breeder and we are so happy to have found her when looking for our 3rd Frenchie. It is clear she cares deeply for not only her pups but the breed in general. Wellington aka Welly exhibits all the qualities we love about frenchies - affectionate, curious and social. He is a healthy and confident pup with the sweetest disposition. From my 1st inquiry to picking up Welly, working with Deb has been an easy, seamless process. We are so happy to have found Bijou French Bulldogs and for the joy that Welly has brought to all of us! Mellisa M. By absolute fate, Deb came into our lives. Our family had just been told by another breeder one we worked with for our 9 year old frenchie that the puppy we put a deposit on, was no longer available, with absolutely no communication or reason. Our entire family was heartbroken, especially our two children. Out of desperation, I did a quick google search and stumbled upon Bijou French Bulldogs. After reading the testimonials, I sent a message to Deb to which she replied almost immediately We scheduled a facetime meeting for the next evening. The conversation was fluid and seamless. This also gave her the opportunity to see where the puppy would live which brought her comfort as well. Throughout the entire process Deb was communicative and transparent, something we had not experienced with any other breeder. For example, a few days before we were scheduled to pick up the puppy, Deb called and said the puppy was at the vet, as she was not eating or drinking overnight. I need to get her better first. She also sent us the medical paperwork and note from the vet, she was extremely thorough. Although we were disappointed with the temporarily delay, we respected that Deb was acting solely out of her care and love for the puppy. After pushing the pickup day back, a week, my husband drove to pick up Carmella. We brought Carmella home to meet our two children, and our 9-year-old French Bulldog, Dutchess. Deb was knowledgeable about how to introduce Carmella to our family. To no surprise, Deb was on point! During the first few weeks of having Carmella at home we would reach out to Deb with questions, pictures or just updates. Deb, completely consistent with how she treated us throughout the entire process was communicative, transparent, and helpful. Her knowledge for this breed is unrivaled by any other breeder we have experienced. Growing up with English bulldogs, and French bulldogs myself, I have never experienced a more thorough and responsible breeder. If you are looking for a breeder who puts quality care into her pups, will be communicate with you during every step of the process, and patiently answer all of your questions and concerns, then Bijou French Bulldogs is for you. Carmella fits in perfectly with our family, and we have Deb and her outstanding program to thank. Amy Debbie is a very responsible breeder caring for each pup individually and the whole litter. Debbie always makes herself available for any questions you may have before during and after your purchase. I Purchased Mr. Quinn in March of and never looked back. He is beautiful kind, and funny. He has such expression in his face. Everyone who meets Mr. Quinn falls in love with him. He is a real character with lots of charm. He gets along well with my other dogs. Quinn loves to travel and we are attending breed handling classes hoping to enter the show ring in the near future so Mr. Quinn can put his swagger on and hopefully come home with a few ribbons. Glenna We love our sweet little Gizmo. Thank you Deborah for helping us pick the perfect match for our beloved 5 year old frenchie. Gizmo is strong, loving, sweet and wants to be just like his big brother! Deb was easy to work with, very professional and takes excellent care of her puppies. Olive came to me trained on puppy pads with the sweetest and most kind temperament you could ever want from a French bulldog. Olive was already socialized and great with other dogs. Especially as first time dog owners it is crucial to have a breeder you can trust. Deb went above and beyond making sure my wife and I felt comfortable and ready to buy a puppy. Further to that she was always available to us for any questions we had to help guide us through the first few months and beyond of raising our puppy. She answered all of our questions and showed us the litter of adorable puppies, the mom and their whelping area. Even after we took our adorable pup home, she still checked in on her and responded to any questions we had. Poppy is a happy, healthy and sometimes sassy LOL pup and we are so happy with her! Finding a reliable preservation breeder was of high importance to us and we feel so lucky to have stumbled onto the BiJou French Bulldogs website one day. From the start, Deb has been a great communicator which really helped us feel at ease throughout the process of getting a pup. It is clear how much she loves her pups and cares about the families they go to. .Butaro is our first dog and our pride and joy! He is the sweetest pup and loves meeting new people and people love meeting him! He has brought so much joy into our lives and also came housebroken, which was a big and pleasant surprise as first-time dog owners! If you are looking to bring a french bulldog into you family, we highly recommend Deb and BiJou Frenchies - they are the best at what they do, you will not regret it! Stephanie C Easy experience from the beginning to end. Deb got back to me quickly about the last available pup. Communication was a breeze and we were able to agree to a pickup location that was convenient for both of us. Lola came with all her shots and chip information. We love Lola so much and are very happy we were able to bring her home last February. She was very professional. She was very knowledgeable about the breed and answered all my questions. It was such a great experience that I also purchased a puppy for my daughter. I take Paris to work with me everyday and the residents at the skilled nursing facility where I work love her. She is calm, friendly and well behaved. Joy B My puppy, mochi, is absolutely perfect! She is healthy, beautiful and so full of love! I could not be more grateful. In addition, Deb has been very helpful and is there to answer any questions I may have. Margaret C Our family has been researching various breeds of dogs and felt that the French Bulldog would best suit our family. Over this past summer, we have had the pleasure of working with Deb Knowlton of Bijou French Bulldog. We came across her website and became even more intrigued about the French Bulldog. From the first time we came into contact with Ms. Knowlton, she has truly demonstrated many qualities of professionalism and passion for the work that she does. She was always available to answer any questions we had via text or email in a promptly manner. When the time came to pickup our Frenchie, the process was fairly simple. Knowlton welcomed us into her home and gave her undivided attention to discuss all the information we needed to best care for our dog. Luna was already chipped, vaccinated and examined by a qualified veterinarian. Today, Luna is doing well and continues to bring such joy to our family. Dom M This year we added a second Frenchie from Deb to our family. We could not be happier with the disposition of our pup Levi and he has been a great addition.Deb took the time to identify a perfect match to our existing Frenchie and both are thriving. Deb is always available for questions during and after the entire process and makes sure that both parents and puppies are happy for years to come. Rebecca W Deb made the process of selecting the right Frenchie easy and fun. Just before the pandemic when we visited Deb to choose our puppy, she let the mother audition us as owners and we really hit it off. When we went back to the pen, the littlest puppy approached us and that was it. Love at first sight. Yasmin is a happy, healthy, self-confident puppy who brings joy to us every day. Bijou French Bulldogs is the best! Yolanda S We looked for the right breeder for our frenchie for awhile, and as soon as we met Deb, we could feel how much care, knowledge, and respect for this breed that she brings. We knew she would be the perfect choice for one of the most important in our lives! Fiona is beautiful, and exhibits all the best qualities of a well bred frenchie— she is super healthy, active, social, and the most friendly temperament. We won the lottery with Fiona and we know that deb had a huge part in making this possible. From the start, Deb took the time to share her knowledge on the breed, their characteristics, and her process. We knew immediately that we had an expert in Deb, and someone who loves and cares for her animals. Minka is the most loving, playful, silly, and all around best dog. She has completely exceeded our expectations, and everyone who meets her falls in love with her. As with most dog lovers we will go to extremes for our dogs, and to say we spoil them in an understatement. We put a great deal of time into investigating the breeders of our dogs and this was especially true for Tucker. This was a journey that took us to visit and meet several Frenchie breeders all who had a love of this wonderful breed. Along this journey we came to meet Deb of Bijou French Bulldogs. Immediately upon meeting Deb and visiting with her we realized Deb was truly special. From the time we picked up Tucker Deb has remained in touch with us and offered advice and support. Tucker is a healthy and absolutely beautiful puppy that has a wonderful personality, his coloring and disposition was exactly what Deb had said it would be. Linda L We are a dog-loving family, but, almost exclusively, we have been Lab owners. While we were all in the house for the pandemic, we realized that this would be a great time to get a puppy. However, this time my daughter asked if we could get a smaller dog that could sit in her lap easier , and that she could take with her more easily than she can the larger labs. Not having explored the smaller dog world before, we did a bit of digging into what breeds of small dogs would fit into our lives, and we determined that the French Bulldog was the way to go. I began my research into finding a pup, and I quickly learned a few things: 1. Rescue French Bulldog puppies are hard to impossible to find, 2. Frenchies are a significant investment and 3. I looked for quite some time, and began discussions with more than a few breeders. Some of the breeders were excellent, but many were not. It began to remind me of puppy milling of labradors we have encountered so many times in the past. Lots of discussion about designer colors on web sites, but little about breeding philosophy. On the day that I sent her a quick note looking to connect, Deb called me. During that first phone call I asked her with questions about her kennel, her breeding philosophy, and overall questions about Frenchies and how well a puppy would fit in our house. Deb enthusiastically engaged in that discussion with passion, and I knew this was a person who I wanted to work with. I was particularly concerned with breathing issues that these dogs so often has, and Deb was able to answer all of these questions with with ease and details since she has a deep experience in breeding Frenchies, and loves to do it. She very purposefully and knowledgeably sets up her breeding program based on a lot of data, not just a pedigree. She has a fantastic working knowledge of genetics, and tracks her dogs health so well that she can use this data to produce great litters. Her process is impressive. We were able to give Deb our criteria about the kind of dog we were looking for, and what we were not. She immediately spoke about future litters she was planning that would fit our needs. I fully expected to have to wait up at least 6 months for a puppy, but we were able to get a puppy sooner than that. We got Millie, a beautiful Fawn with tons of red accents. She is smaller in size, just as we like, and Deb told us that with her intensity gene, that her coloring was going to be stunning. She was absolutely right. Millie has been an amazing addition to our family, and even keeps up with our labs! Her alert spirit commands the room, and at the same time, she is loving and sweet. Her temperament could not be better. We love that she is a pretty puppy, but more important to looks, her health and temperament are paramount. However, the best testimonial that I can provide comes from the days following Millie home-coming. We took this beautiful 5 lb puppy to the vet for a wellness visit, and during the exam, the vet turned to me and said that she had no concerns about breathing or palate issues with this puppy, and that I should commend Deb for a beautifully bred dog - the best she has seen in years. If you are searching for Frenchies, and are considering Bijou, rest assured that you are in excellent hands and paws Sean D Once my family had decided it was time to get a dog I knew we needed a smaller one, who would bond with the whole family. I have always had dogs, large and small. My last one was an American bulldog, Rottweiler mix, we rescued at 6 weeks old, whom I loved. After researching the qualities we settled on a French Bulldog. I was excited my husband, who wanted a larger Pit Bull less than. There are so many breeders on the internet and 90 percent of them left me feeling like it was a business. Some I down right worried about the animals in their care. What I loved about Deb was the level of time and care she put into her animals. As a nurse I appreciated the commitment to health and socialization she gave for what I knew would be my newest child. I have two with two legs and now Nas, our Frenchie and Mashugana our Bengal cat to make two on four legs. We have only had him since September but he is adored by our whole family. My husband within a week was proudly telling everyone Nas was just what he wanted and now six months later is trying to get me to agree to a second. The vet was so impressed with his health, everyone who meets him talks about how smart he is. I have never had a dog more willing to love on everyone he meets. If we do decide to expand our family again we will be contacting Deb. She truly has a passion for what she does and the joy she brings to families. She was honest, professional, and very caring about us and our puppy. She is always willing to help with any questions, promptly responds and cares deeply for the pups, doing all she can to best prepare them for life with their new family. She is confident and does not get easily stressed. She is also very well socialized. Luna is the perfect example of what a Frenchie should be like. She is social, accepting, very friendly, and a quick learn… she has far exceeded my expectations! From our initial phone call to when I picked Baxter up, Deb and Shelley were knowledgeable, communicative and very clear that their top priority is the health and well-being of their dogs. Not only is Baxter the most beautiful Frenchie I have ever seen, but he also has the best temperament - he is sweet, playful, friendly with all dogs, people and children, snuggly, loyal - I could go on and on. Baxter and I can hardly make it two feet on the street without getting stopped - people come out of stores and restaurants to meet him. I will definitely get a second puppy from them sometime, hopefully in the near future. Not only Is Dexter healthy and happy but he has the perfect personality that could only have come from great parents fur and human. Shelly and Deb are phenomenal, educated us and made the whole process exciting and comfortable. Their continued support and love since we picked Dexter up is amazing. We already have and would continue to recommend them as breeders. K Stoltzfus Deb and Shelly are not only two of the nicest most helpful, honest and knowledgeable people, they treat their dogs like their family and will be there to help with any advice you need even after you bring your puppy home. Our boy, Xander, is smart, funny and full of love, hugs and licks. I was in such shock I think I must have mentioned it to everyone who asked how our visit went. She's healthy, happy, intelligent and the most affectionate pup I've ever met. We brought her home in August at 14 weeks and she has truly completed our family!! I was looking to add a french bulldog to our family, and from the onset they were absoltely helpful. This was the first time I was researching and interested in the breed, and they were very helpful in educating me along the process. They were very responsive and answered all of my e-mails and I send a lot! They truly love thier dogs, which is evident, and take pride and care in what they do. I look forward to the day we are able to grow our family even further and hope to have the opportunity to work with them again! J LaRocco Owning a French bulldog was a dream of mine for about 10 years before it became a reality. I always loved the look of the breed but after careful research I knew if I ever purchased one I would need to find a reputable breeder. I asked around, did some Google searches and scoured Facebook for contact information. I had been talking to another breeder when I found Deb and Shelly. I immediately sent in an interest form and Deb called me within a day or so. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about her dogs and why they were superior to the others. And after speaking with the other breeders I could compare them all and it was abundantly clear who I'd be getting my next furbaby from! Health testing was very important to us and Deb has done a wonderful job of making sure that her puppies are free of genetic and other disorders. Penny Lane came to us in Sept and has been such an awesome addition to our crew. She has the sweetest temperament. She's very smart. And she has these amazing brown eyes that look at you so lovingly you just have to give her pets or a treat! She's been a wonderful companion to me and our other dog. I highly recommend speaking with Deb and Shelly if you are searching for a Frenchie. You will not be disappointed! B Smassanow Deb and Shelly were absolutely wonderful to work with. We did a lot of research on Frenchie breeders in the New York area and luckily came across Beautibuls. From the first conversation with Deb we knew they were the ones we wanted to go with. They were extremely knowledgable and were so happy to share their expertise with us. We visited Deb and Shelly early on in the process and they showed us many puppies they were all equally adorable! She is healthy, happy, full of personality and absolutely stunning! After we took her home, they were reachable at any time which really helped us settle in as new puppy parents. We receive endless compliments of how well she represents the ideal French Bulldog breed. She is perfection! We cannot wait to extend our Frenchie family and will absolutely be giving Deb and Shelly a call when we are ready. We did a lot of research before we settled on to getting a puppy from them. They are respected breeders by other French bulldog breeders and that was an important consideration for us. Deb and Shelly have been great in giving us advice and answering our questions on every aspect of raising a healthy and happy puppy from feeding, toilet training and teaching good habits. Their advice and involvement in raising Louis have been invaluable to us. Louis is now a 16 months old happy, smart , sweet and strong young adult dog. He is completely house broken in and has his routines and has become a loving family member. Our two children love Louis like a brother. We highly recommend Debbie and Shelly and the Beautibul puppies. YKW and family. Y Waite "Fred and I give Beautibuls a 6 star out of 5 star review"! Looking back at all the disappointment from other breeders, it was a blessing in disguise to find Beautibuls and become part of their extended Frenchie family! I filled out the online application and heard back within a few hours. Beautibuls have changed my perception of what a great experience purchasing a puppy can be! I was instantly drawn to the pair, Deb and Shelly. If we ever add another Frenchie to our family it will be a Beautibuls Frenchie"! S Kibbe We are the very proud owners of 3 French Bulldogs. I was referred to Deb and Shelly by a breeder I had purchased my last little girl from as she did not have what I was looking for at the time. My experience with them was great. We spoke at length about what I was looking for in a pup as we were adding a 3rd and wanted the dynamics to work. Randal is a pied boy he is about 8 months old now and really filling out beautifully. He was housebroken in 6 months which is record breaking for my Frenchies. He is very sweet, and lovable with a great personality. Deb and Shelly were extremely accommodating and I have enjoyed sharing Randal's milestones with them. They have a top notch breeding program and take great pride in what they do. I would not hesitate to recommend Beautibuls to anyone looking for an amazing dog. I am one of the Beautibuls. I am named after my frenchy dad Dominic but I look just like my frenchy mom Senka. My mom is Gale. She tells me she loves me because I am sweet and a good snuggler. My dad says he loves me because of my good health which means no vet bills! My frenchy sister Giada is not a Beautibul we still love her and she had some large vet bills as a puppy. Grammies Shelly and Deb made sure that did not happen to me. Dad is also proud of how fast I was able to train him to hold me and give me lots of love. Our puppy Bowie is a playful, smart, happy, and loving pup. Being a part of the extended Beautibuls family is a wonderful place to be. I had to fill out online applications amid fighting back the tears, getting over losing our little pied gal. We got Lola from a breeder in Australia when we lived there 10 years prior, so we had no connections with US breeders. Some breeders never replied, some were short, but Deb emailed us back right away and even set up a call with us the very next day to find out about our situation and our ability to care for one of her pups. As luck would have it, we ended up with our handsome Louie very soon after we spoke with Deb. We were a bit nervous about having a new puppy so close to our loss, but he was the blast of sunshine that our family needed. Louie is energetic, smart and healthy, with a great temperament and he has the whole neighborhood suckered into playing fetch with him. We brought our puppy home last August and Deb and Shelly have been there every step of the way with any questions we may have had. Or little boy has been a perfect fit with our other two dogs and has an awesome temperament! He's the best. Every time I show co-workers they always ask " Where did you get him from". Our vet said he's never seen a puppy so prefect. With that said we are blessed to have a Beautibuls dog in our family. I don't want to forget how great of a dog he is as well. We have another Frenchie and we see the difference. Thanks again for the best meatball ever. Couldn't picture life without our Tyson" Kevin F "My husband and I purchased our first Frenchie from Beautibuls and we could not be happier. Knowing that this was our first the breeders were so knowledgeable and helpful. We are completely in love with this little guy. Although we chose not to show him, he is our Grand Champion!!! We will defiantly be back for a second puppy". Lisa T "Henry is such a sweet soul. He loves to snuggle up on your lap but he's also very playful. His wobble wag giggle ball is his favorite toy - he just loves chasing it around the house. He's super friendly with everyone and loves playing with other dogs. People ask me all the time where I got him because he's so adorable!! He makes me so happy every day"!! He's a puppy from your very first litter and has been such a joy in my life. You have helped guide me in the show ring and are always there for any questions I may have. Thank You Ladies!!! Lori H Enchanted Bulldogs It was a pleasure engaging with Deb - she was very helpful and informative throughout the process. Achilles, our puppy, was healthy and has immediately become one of the family. Also, Deb has been helpful after we took Achilles home with us. I highly recommend them as breeders. Steve D "I have been an ecstatic and exceedingly happy Beautibulls Frenchie Mommy to 2 beautiful, happy and healthy frenchies, Mimosa and Madeline Maddie since the minute I brought them home!! In addition to being a beautiful dog, her disposition was friendly and loving to me, my friends, my cats, and the dogs in the Park! She often gave THEM - most of whom were much bigger - a run for their money, and tuckered them out from play way before she was ready to call it quits!! Anyway, they're pretty funny when that all comes out, but they are truly NOT that helpful!! They are both cuddlers, lickers, and lovers - just wanting to be around mom, and in mornings and evenings even view the kitties as fellow cuddle buddies! Mimosa will be 5 at Christmas and Maddie will be 2 at the end of this month. Neither has had any health issues, and any concerns or questions that I had when I first brought them home Shelly and Deb were eager to answer. Similarly before I committed to buying one and joining their "family", I was very curious about the breeding and whelping processes, and besides being incredibly interesting, they helped me understand how and why my girls were going to be as healthy as they were. My first 3 dogs were big dogs - 2 bullmastiffs and 85 lb boxer lab and I adored them completely. I miss them dearly as well, but I am so so so happy with my 20 lb frenchies - they might be smaller in size, but not smaller in heart or energy levels and I'll never go back! As a matter of fact, I have notified Beautibulls of my desire to get another one, so if that's not a positive reference, I don't know what is!! I could not possibly recommend Beautibulls more highly!! Thank you Deb and Shelly!!! Our hearts were forever broken and we soon realized that that the only thing nearly as sad as losing our bully, was the emptiness we felt without having a dog to share our lives with. Knowing the breed well, we set out on a quest to find a reputable breeder. It was a very long journey but we were determined, and health and temperament were our top priorities. As time went on we developed a keen interest in Frenchies — and we were ever so fortunate to have come across the Beautibuls website. It made us so very hopeful - not only were the photos of their dogs beautiful, but they were so healthy and accomplished. We reached out and to our surprise not only did we get a prompt response, but it was such a pleasure to speak with Deb who dedicated a great deal of time to listen to our story, and talk to us about their breeding program. She was so knowledgeable and patient with us in answering all of our questions. Deb and Shelly made the process so smooth and were and still are! Luigi has been nothing short of amazing from day 1. He came to us so well socialized — we remember being so surprised at how quickly and confidently he settled right in… sleeping right through from his first night onwards! He steals the show in his training classes, loves his skateboard and is an emotional support dog. The breed is small and muscular with heavy bone structure, a smooth coat, a short face, and trademark "bat" ears. Many of my dogs are Champions and Grand Champions, producing incredible babies. My dogs are health tested to guarantee all puppies live a long and happy life! We produce all of the brindles in black, blue, chocolate, lilac , fawns and sables in golden, red, blue, chocolate, lilac , creams, pure coats and tan points in black, blue, chocolate, lilac , and pieds in ALL of these beautiful colors! labradoodle puppy first grooming - The range of amounts is based on the activity of your Golden for the day, either low, moderate, or high level of activity. Golden Retrievers should have scheduled times to eat daily. The scheduled times will help them with their energy levels and keep them healthy. You can schedule their eating times as to what works best for your schedule. For example, feeding them before you leave for work and then when you get home. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Planning their mealtimes around your mealtimes will often make it easier for you and the puppy. Make sure to give them plenty of time after eating to got to the bathroom a couple of times before heading to bed. Hopefully, this will help them sleep for a longer period. After about six months, your Golden Retriever can go down to two daily feedings. This usually occurs once in the morning and once in the evening. They can usually last about 12 hours between meals. If it goes past 12 hours, they could become nauseated. Golden Retrievers can experience food allergies often caused from proteins in dairy or meat products. If your dog experiences symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching they may have a food allergy. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens. However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help. Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods. If you work hard to make sure your homemade foods are rich in the vitamins and minerals that a dog needs, then it might work for your Golden Retriever. It takes a lot more time to find recipes and make sure it has all the nutritional value of a store-bought dog food. If you are willing to research expertly formulated recipes internet is making it easier to do this , and take the time to cook for your golden then go for it! Consulting your veterinarian is a must before starting any homemade diet. A veterinary nutritionist should also review your plan before starting. Feeding your Golden Retriever table food is not the best practice but a small amount of dog healthy table food is fine. Some example table foods that are healthy for them are carrots, blueberries and plain yogurt. Just be aware that feeding them too much table food can throw their entire diet out of whack. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. Conclusion Making sure your Golden Retriever is getting the right foods at the right amounts will help them live their best life. There are many choices of foods with all the right ingredients. Be sure to choose one that works best for you and your Golden. Consult with your veterinarian on which food will bring the most nutritional value to the health of your Golden Retriever. If your Golden is experiencing any health issues related to changing foods, visit your veterinarian. If this article was helpful, please consider sharing this post on Facebook with the button below! You now have a beautiful, smart, and loyal dog who will love you for life. To make sure they grow into a healthy and happy companion, you need to feed them the right amount of food. At months old, which is usually when they are ready to leave their mother, a golden retriever puppy should be eating 3 cups of dog food divided into three meals per day. This is based on a typical large-breed puppy food. Different brands will give a feeding guide on their packaging. However, how much and how often to feed your golden retriever will keep changing during this time of rapid growth. Golden Retriever Puppy Feeding Timeline Image Credit: PxHere All puppies are different as are the foods, but some general guidelines for feeding your golden retriever during their first year are: 0—6 weeks: A golden retriever puppy can start eating solid food when they are 3—4 weeks old. Give them a total of 3 cups of dog food per day by their third month, 3 to 4 cups by the time they are 6 months old. The AKC recommends waiting until large breed puppies are at least 12 months old before switching them over to adult dog food and more likely 18 months. The amount will depend on their weight and activity level, but a rough guide is 1—2 cups per meal. Image Credit: Kinek00, Shutterstock Large breed puppies like golden retrievers should eat three to four small meals a day for the first 3—6 months of their lives. Smaller portions spread throughout the day are easier on their tummies and help prevent bloat, a serious condition that can be deadly for dogs. It also helps them maintain their energy level throughout the day. Puppy food has more calories and fat to support their growth, as well as extra vitamins and minerals for their developing immune and nervous systems and bones. The protein source matters, too. Puppies need animal-based proteins like chicken, beef, or lamb for their growing muscles. Choose a Large Breed Formula: Large breed puppies grow quickly, which means they need extra support for their bones and joints. Formulations for large breeds contain the correct calcium and phosphorus ratio for strong bones and glucosamine and chondroitin for healthy joints. They can help you choose the right food for your puppy based on their age, weight, and activity level. But puppies need to be fed on a schedule to prevent them from overeating and becoming overweight. How do you know if your puppy is getting enough to eat? After that, their growth will start to slow down. He Has a Healthy Appetite: A healthy puppy is interested in food and eager to eat. He Has Plenty of Energy: A well-fed puppy is full of energy and ready to play. Make the most of mealtime with these tips: 1. It also helps other aspects of puppy training, such as potty training and crate training. Image Credit: Alena Marchuk, Shutterstock This means leaving food out all day for them to graze on whenever they want. Leave food down for 10 minutes and then pick up what is not eaten. If they have not eaten anything, offer it again in an hour. Slow them down by scattering their kibble around the bowl, using a puzzle feeder or snuffle mat. This will help them learn to eat slowly and enjoy their food more. If your puppy is not drinking enough water for your liking, try adding a bit of broth to their bowl to make it more appealing and help them stay hydrated. Resist the Urge to Sneak Them Table Scraps Puppies are experts at giving those big, soulful eyes that make it hard to say no. But resist the temptation to give them table scraps or human food. Aside from teaching them bad manners, it can also lead to health problems, like obesity. A lot of human foods are not safe or healthy for dogs. For instance, garlic and onions are toxic to dogs. Oily food can upset their stomach, and carbs add a lot of calories. This helps them learn that mealtime is a specific time and place and not something that happens all over the house. Let Your Puppy Eat in Peace. This includes other pets in the house and small children who might want to bother them or try to steal their food. Otherwise, meals can become a stressful experience for your puppy instead of a happy one. Conclusion Feeding your golden retriever puppy the right amount of quality dog food will establish a strong foundation for their health and happiness. In addition, make mealtimes more meaningful by turning them into lessons and bonding moments between you and your dog. The puppy phase is over before you know it, so enjoy it while it lasts! Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months. There is also info on how to keep your puppy and your adult at his or her optimum weight. Scroll down to find growth charts to make sure your puppy is growing at the proper rate and is within the right weight range for his age. If you are looking for information on what to feed, go to How to Choose a Dog Food. Unlike with human children, a puppy that is overfed will grow too fast before they grow too fat. A good example is where a smaller puppy at 10 weeks was overfed and his growth was compared to a puppy that was correctly fed. The growth of your puppy needs to be controlled. General Guidelines for Puppies Below are some general guidelines on how much to feed puppies. Most dog food bags suggest feeding too much. Increase to about 3 cups a day by 5 months for boys and by 6 months for girls. Golden Retrievers at this age are supposed to look lanky and all Golden Retrievers act like they are starving when fed the correct amount. If left to eat as much as they want, they will all grow too fast. In the wild, dogs do not have unlimited access to eat as much as they want. They work for their food. Caloric Needs Greatly Decrease at About a Year When puppies reach about months, their caloric needs begin to decrease. Some males might need 4 cups if active and are fed a less expensive food. Make sure you take into consideration the number of extra calories being fed as treats. You should be able to feel their ribs, but not see them even when the dog is wet. If you can see the ribs, increase their food. Decrease the food if you cannot feel them. I always tell people that it is better to underfeed than to overfeed, especially when feeding puppies. Weight Range Charts Following are charts of how puppies should generally grow in weight. Keep in mind that very few puppies need to be at the top of these ranges and if you cannot feel ribs, your dog is overweight even if she is in this weight range. If your dog is still a puppy and she is over these weight ranges, you are feeding her too much. Female Golden Retriever Weight Chart Here is a chart of how girls should generally grow in weight: 2 Months — pounds.
