Originally an all-breed rescue Tier Haven shifted to focus on working dogs with the rise of breed specific legislation which was leading to larger numbers of German Shepherds, and other working dogs, being euthanized. We are rooted in Kentucky with a strong passion for enacting change within the state which has ranked last in animal welfare for many years - even if change is one dog at a time. The Tier Haven Family is committed to giving these dogs a second chance and we are all honored to be part of their paths to a better life. While the Tier Haven Family is large we are still a small organization with a core group of volunteers who keep things flowing. These volunteers are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of the working dogs who find themselves in Kentucky shelters. Tier Haven believes in individuality and giving our individual dogs the space to be dogs and move foward in a productive manner regardless of past trauma. This can take time though and Tier Haven is a dedicated no-kill organization which means we often have "long-term" residents either due to medical or behavioral needs that are on-going. As a non-profit Tier Haven relies on our adopters and donors to continue moving forward with our mission - our adopters give us the gift of space to help the next dog while our donors give us the support to ensure each dog is given the best possible care while waiting for an adopter. Tier Haven is a foster based organization which means we do not have a central facility where our dogs are housed. This means we cannot allow drop in visits and have a specific adoption process which must be followed in order to meet our dogs. Adoption Policy Tier Haven requires an adoption application to be completed and processed prior to meeting or adopting any of our dogs. As a completely foster based organization Tier Haven relies on the application to help ensure that adopters are meeting dogs that are suitable for their household and that the dogs are meeting adopters committed to their individual needs. We do not have a central facility nor do we allow drop in visits on our foster homes for respect of their privacy and time. We rely on your application to assist in matching you with a suitable dog and ask that you provide us with as much information as possible about why you're seeking a Shepherd and your expectations for the dog. When submitting an application please contact your vet clinic and provide them with a release of information and also inform your personal references that they will be contacted. Once your application is processed you will be contacted by a volunteer to discuss potential dogs and arrange a meet and greet. Since we are a foster based group we only allow up to three 3 dogs on each meet and greet to keep it manageable for everyone. Meet and greets are often held at public locations to respect the privacy of our foster homes and they are scheduled at the discretion of the foster homes. Tier Haven relies on the adoption fee to continue helping future dogs therefore we are unable to reduce the fee for any reason. Each adoption is on a 10 day trial during which the adoption fee is refundable should the dog be returned for any reason. Kentucky was purchased from a breeder as a very young puppy. He was a small bundle of cuteness. Like all german shepherds, Kentucky grew and became a typical teenage German Shepherd. Strong, happy, playful and full of energy. Lots and lots of energy. His family realized they could not provide him with the home he needed to grow and develop into the wonderful dog he was capable of becoming. He is a very smart guy with a thick, shiny coat and a friendly, curious nature. Kentucky lived with 2 young girls in his former home and gets along well with children. He is eager to learn his doggy socialization skills so he can become truly impressive. Kentucky will thrive in a home willing to provide him with the structure and training he needs to develop. As cute as they are — puppies demand a large investment of time, patience, and training. They are inquisitive, have endless energy and get into just about everything. Buster on the left was a very cool dog we only had for a little while. We bred him a couple times, but being it was a very busy time in our own lives, we only took just this one picture of him. That's a real loss, because Buster was well worth looking at. Buster was a highly athletic running dog of pounds, and 28" at the withers, so a very big dog, and very athletic. You just almost never see that in Johnson dogs that tend to be shorter, lazier and have poor structure. Buster had fantastic structure - solid pasterns, good angulation of the hock, thick loin, straight topline, great head, just an all around well built dog of subtance with all the necessary good points that allow great agility and long-term high activity in a dog. And man oh man, could our Buster Doodle Dog run and jump! I mean this boy was a track star.Buster was also a very, very smart dog and with huge bulldog personality. He used to put his front paws on both Becky and Maria when they were sitting on wheeled office chairs in the hard floored office, and then push them all around the room, bouncing them into walls and furniture, forcing them to play with and pet him. It was so funny, because Buster was a really big dog and so insistent about it. Becky would be sitting there at her computer working, and Buster would just walk up, pull out her chair - often very much against her will, climb on her and then push her all over the office, not letting her out of the chair. Finally she'd relent and take a few moments to pet him, and then he was happy and would go do something else, but he'd always return and do the same thing again in a bit. We were at a point that if there was some important office project someone was working on, Buster just needed to be outside, or you wouldn't get anything done. Buster was a bulldog through and through and just loved to mix it up with Doc - and Doc wasn't going for it, not in the least. Buster would walk up to Doc and place his paws on Doc's shoulders - a sign of dominance one dog will sometimes do to another, as if to say, "you know I'm the top dog here, right Doc? If you're another male dog, Doc is happy to get along, but you'd better not be pulling stuff like that on him, holy smokes! So Doc would snatch Buster up and just drive him into the ground and the fight would be on, basically anytime Buster did that, and Buster never, ever, ever had any hope of winning. I mean Doc was a really serious customer in a fight - so much so it would typically all be over and done before we even had time to respond to it, and Buster would be on his back still trying to fight, but often screaming for mercy too. We'd say, "Doc, let him go now," and Doc would go walking away, another life lesson taught, the "professor of doom" headed to a nice spot on the couch. And understand, Doc never hurt Buster, and he easily could have. We'd have never tolerated that. If male dogs seek to harm each other in such scuffles we get them apart and keep them apart. We don't endorse the fighting of dogs around here by far! It was purely a dominance thing though, and once proven, that was that and Doc would walk away, no harm done. The thing is though, Buster would try again and again - maybe a few days later, maybe ten minutes later. He just didn't care how many times Doc beat him up, he'd always come back for more. It was like a game to him. He knew what Doc would do. He knew that Doc was not playing and was going to literally bounce his head off the walls for him, but here he'd come, trying it all over again a couple times a week, and always wagging his tail happily as he climbed up on Doc. During the time we had Buster, he was bred to both Bella and Lilly, both times making for some simply awesome long-legged, very correct and substantial running dogs. Even in hunting American Bulldogs and Bandogges do not typically kill hogs or other large game, much less your cat, chickens, goats or other domestic or livestock animals. E ach receives extra feedings by bottle from day-one , imprinting them as much on children as on their own mother. Abi is special needs and with a unique connection to animals. She called to Mambo when he was less than a week old and still blind. He crawled feet across the floor to her a distant adventure at his age. From that moment on he preferred Abi to his own mother, often refusing to nurse off unless Abi's hand was on him. For the rest of his life, Mambo was inseparable from Abi. Of course, Mambo didn't remain a puppy for long.Mambo grew.Here's John at four hugging Mambo at under a year old. It's an important distinction between straight Johnson or Bully type American Bulldogs and "hybrid type" American Bulldogs. At this age, dog, boy and sisters had a blast. The kids would lay on the tile floor holding a leash and Doc would run them around, sliding across the floor. Doc truly loved playing with the kids. Many dogs tolerate kids, but I haven't met a well loved American Bulldog that didn't genuinely enjoy the company of little kids, forming deep and lasting bonds with the children in their families. He can catch a football, crunch up a soup bone or swallow a sock or a toy, so be sure to pick up the laundry and toys! This breed is not suitable for full-time crating and cages, but do okay in apartments with daily walks. Train them early and they'll be fine. Poorly socialized, carelessly trained dogs are a high risk liability LIKELY to bite strangers in an effort to control them by forced herding and attack.
