We are lucky to have hands and thumbs that let us pick and feel things. For dogs, their mouths work as their hands. Not all chewing is bad. Chewing toys are actually good for your pugs overall health. So what counts as destructive chewing? Here is a list of some of the more common things that dogs like to chew on when their owner is not home. Furniture — Just recently got a new couch? If you know your dog has bad habit of chewing up furniture, then I suggest you block off certain rooms of the house until you correct the behavior. Clothes — By far the most common victims here are shoes. They got some texture and flavor to them which makes them the perfect target for your Pug. Most dogs are not too picky about what they put in their mouths. Be careful where you leave your gadgets. Cables and wires — Cables and wires running through your home is a big no no when you know your dog likes to chew things other than his toys. Tuck them under your carpet, unplug them, move them or hide them somehow. Just like with any behavior problem, your first goal should always be to understand why your dog does the things that he does. This will help you stop and cure the bad behavior. Increased Health Risks for Fat Golden Retrievers Carrying extra weight creates numerous health problems and can make existing ones even worse for the Golden Retriever. Being overweight can also be hard on joints and bones. Golden Retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which is an abnormal formation of the hip socket. Putting your hand on either side of your Goldens chest, with just very gentle pressure almost lightly touching you should be able to feel every rib. Also, if you start with your hands on your Goldens chest and run them down their body toward the back-end, you should be able to feel a definite waist. Obviously, if they start to look drastically overweight and quite visibly so, then you should take some action. But this is something you will very rarely see. They will reach full height at some point between 12 and 18 months old, but still be filling out and building muscle after this time. So a puppy should rarely be put on a diet, particularly because malnutrition may then become a problem. But make sure to ask your vet about their weight during each visit so you can have an informed second opinion. Keep An Eye On Treats Treats when training, scraps from the table, a biscuit from your children, and snacks found and eaten when out and about, all add up and sometimes to a surprisingly high amount of calories. And table scraps should be stopped completely.
