Hard copy evidence of current health testing should be available for your perusal. The puppies should seem socialized and comfortable when you handle them. The puppies should have been seen by a veterinarian, and have had their first set of shorts by 8 weeks. Their tails should have been docked and front dewclaws removed within a few days of birth. Expect the breeder to ask you questions: about your home and family, the hours the dog will be left alone while you or the family will be away, and how the puppy will be raised. The breeder should be able to educate you about the breed, and to answer all your questions about raising a boxer puppy. He or she should furnish you with contact information, and willingly agree to be a resource throughout the life of the puppy. The breeder should not plan to place the puppies before they are weeks old. What to ask the breeder Is the breeder a member of a national or local boxer club? How long have they been breeding boxers? Do they show boxers? How many litters has the dam had? Four and preferably fewer litters is the maximum for a dam; she should have been bred no earlier than eighteen months and no later than six years. Although there certainly exist good breeders who are not, this title suggests that minimum standards of showing, health testing and record-keeping are practiced. Ask to see the pedigree of the puppies. Champions close up in the pedigree suggests that the breeder is breeding to animals whose conformation satisfies AKC criteria. Ask about the longevity in the puppies' line. Ask if the grandparents are alive and, if not, when they died and what the cause of death was. The more dogs that lived into double digits, and the fewer identical causes of death on both sides of the pedigree, the better chance your pup has to live a long life. That does not mean, however, that there is anything wrong with white pups. In fact, there is no genetic distinction between white Boxer puppies and their companion-grade fawn and brindle littermates other than the amount of expression of the gene for "flash". Occasionally, a white puppy will be deaf, but that is easily discernable by the time he or she is old enough to go to a new home. Why only through a reputable breeder? All dogs have a history of carrying certain genetic defects or disease common to their breed and Boxers are no exception to the rule. Some of the more common problems inherent in the boxer breed are Cardiomyopathy, Aortic Stenosis, Bloat, Cancer, Canine Hip Dysplasia and Histiocytic ulcerative Colitis inflammation of the colon. These breeders have absolutely no interest in the boxer breed. They could care less about there bloodline or their health for that matter and are only in the business to make a lot of money. That little boxer puppy in the pet store window may pull at your heart strings, but the chances of these dogs being diagnosed in the future with one of the above mentioned defects or diseases is greatly increased when they are breed by one of these low life breeders. When you meet with the breeder there are a few things you should look for in helping you choose a puppy. The majority of boxers sold in the U. There are certain characteristics in a puppy that you need to look for to increase your chances of bringing home a boxer pup that will exhibit good behavior, have a great temperament, and be a great companion for you and your family. When you meet with the puppies for the first time look for one that is happy to see you and is not afraid to come to you. Avoid any pups that shy away from you or keep their distance. A puppy that is overly aggressive to its siblings will probably be a bit more difficult to train so you would want to rule these pups out also. This should narrow things down considerably. These puppies would most likely be your best choice. After all, the breeder has already spent 10 to 12 weeks with the puppies and could be very helpful in helping you make your final decision. When you think you have your winner just take a few minutes to examine the puppy. You want a pup that has a nice shiny coat as well as clear eyes no discharge or cloudiness and is free from fleas or ticks. Boxer color choices Boxer dogs basically come in 3 different types of coats; Fawn, which is tan to dark brown with white markings on the legs, face, chest and underside and they may have black markings on the face that looks similar to a mask. Brindle, which is similar to fawn with the addition of a black coat over the base tan or brown that, gives the boxer the appearance of being striped. They are exposed to lots of sights and sounds and new things each day. We have personally found Labradoodles to be amazing family pets. Labradoodles are loyal, playful, extremely smart and great companions to their human families. You can train them to do just about anything with the right guidance. Labradoodles often have low to no shed coats and usually are allergy friendly. But be aware there are no guarantees that they won't shed a little.
