The Boxer is a strong breed that was built for action; he needs to work his muscles and experience the liberty of movement. Super young pups should have all puppy shots before being taken out. For most Boxers, regardless of age, two walks per day are best. The daily amount should 45 minutes for pup and 1 hour for those 1 year and older. These can be broken up in any way that suits your own schedule and time availability. Cardio - Just a 15 minute bout of high intensity action such as Frisbee or fetch once per day can make a huge difference in a Boxer's demeanor, keeping much more calm and happy when he is back in the house. Some owners mistake a Boxer's indifference at seeing a Frisbee as not wanting to engage. However, it is often the level of enthusiasm that an owner displays that will directly impact a Boxer's desire to run. Most love to run and stretching and working the muscles in this way is a great method to keep a Boxer dog in good shape. That hyper and restless activity that you witness when a Boxer is in the house can be channeled into a short session of action that leaves the dog satisfied and both physically and mentally ABLE to be calm. Commands - We going to dive into this a bit more ahead, however taking 15 to 20 minutes a day to work on commands has a triple benefit: 1. You work toward having a well-trained dog which in and of itself is a huge plus. It helps a Boxer learn self-control. When a dog discovers the element of focus and purposely learning, he is then able to self-regulate and this itself can help the dog calm himself down. It helps to establish hierarchy, with you as the clear leader. For any dog to behave well, this is a must. While it is true that Boxers will be much calmer if they have a physical outlet, stimulating the mind plays a huge role as well. Very detailed studies have proven that canines in general have the emotional capacity of 3 year old humans. This is quite telling. Do you have kids? Or have ever spent even an hour with a toddler? They are super hyper, highly inquisitive and importantly are never happy just 'being' for long periods of time. Dogs are the same. Boxers can become hyper if they have nothing to focus on. Just left to 'be', they can get bored and have trouble knowing what to do, so they run around… they quite literally can end up bouncing off the walls in an overly hyper state with no real tools to calm themselves down. Now, if you take that same hyper Boxer dog and he is taken out for walks twice per day, plays one-on-one with his owner once a day AND is given indoor task that require him to use his canine senses, he'll be a much happier and calmer dog. The mention of canine senses is rather vital here…. Dogs have urges to use their sense of smell… to sniff… to explore with their noses …. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. As with cardio mentioned earlier, the energy level and enthusiasm of the owner plays a huge part in how eager a Boxer will be to follow through. Speak with in an animated voice and encourage your dog to seek out the hidden treats. Start with easy to find hiding places and then work up to much more difficult sessions. Once a dog learns that it's time to play the game, he often will not give up and will search until he finds his treasure. Advanced sessions can include having the reward be deep in a cardboard box under layers of old towels and safe odds-and-ends and be sure that the treat itself has a strong scent; a good choice is a strip of bacon grease blotted out because most dogs won't bother to move much for a food that they will receive at any rate. Be sure to use a command word such as 'Find' or 'Go Get' and a word to end the session such as 'Good, Find' or 'Good, Get' to establish when this begins and when this ends. You don't have to do this every day; 2 or 3 days a week is usually enough to make a Boxer dog happy and work in conjunction with the other methods to keep hyper behavior at bay and encourage a more calming atmosphere when you just want your dog to settle down. Continued below 4 Have the right collection of toys for your Boxer. Are you guilty of walking out of a dollar store with an armful of cheap dog toys? If so, you may very well then be an owner who wonders why the heck your Boxer isn't just happy having all those toys and would rather run, jump up and spin around the house like a hyper nutcase. When a dog is bored he will do one of three things: Sulk and act depressed, bark or otherwise have disturbing behavior or express agitation. When you invest a few more bucks to obtain sturdy, quality toys that encourage independent play, this can make a huge difference in a dog's general state of mind and his ability to keep himself occupied. Think of someone giving you a paper and pencil compared to paper and a piece Crayon box. Give your Boxer rawhide alternatives that allow him to happily gnaw away or treat-release toys that motivate him to work to gain his reward. There are two huge benefits of teaching a Boxer all basic commands: he will respect you as the true leader and you will have control over his behavior. While a hyper puppy definitely still needs to be walked, engaged and given tasks to stay busy…and a puppy cannot be expected to remain calm all day… when you take the assertive position to give a 'Sit' command that is listened to without hesitation, this can really come in handy if your Boxer is acting hyper around company or when out in public in a store or other area where you really need him to act calm. It's never too early or too late to start working on this. Training for the basics of Sit, Come, Stay, Down, Get or Fetch and Give can start when a Boxer puppy is 8 weeks old and can be taught to older dogs as well. In addition to this, teaching a Boxer to Heel is always advantageous and not only will keep him calm when out on a walk around the neighborhood but will also keep him appropriately by your side in high energy situations where a dog can become hyper just by picking up the vibe of an event. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Dogs that rarely see a visitor to the house will often jump and act overly excited on those few occasions that someone new enters into their territory. Boxers should be gradually exposed to the many situations, places, people and other pets that exist in the world. If you stayed inside your home… only venturing into your yard and nowhere else for years and were suddenly plopped down in to Times Square, you wouldn't be so calm either; that's how dogs feel if they are isolated and not given the opportunity to slowly learn about the world and all that is in it. Go to parks, bring your Boxer along to run errands, bring him hiking, change up the walking routes, take the time to say hello when you pass by another owner with his dog, have him outside with you while you wash the car, bring him to the beach… unless there are big signs saying 'no dogs allowed' bring him along and let him experience the sights and sounds of the world. Hyperkinesis - Being clinically hyperactive is often misdiagnosed. Most dogs simply need the physical and mental releases as we discussed above. These highly sensitive dogs can be set off into a frenzy by everyday simple noises such as microwave beeping or normal household events such as someone zipping down the staircase. For these rare cases, thorough testing must be performed, which should include a 2 to 3 day stay at an veterinary hospital where vitals are monitored, both heart and respiratory rates, when both at rest and when stimuli is introduced. If this is diagnosed, stimulants similar to those that are given to humans with ADHD can be helpful as are vet supervised changes to the diet and possible supplements of L-theanine, GABA and valerian root. Senior Issues - In some cases, a senior dog will be unable to stay calm and this is often related to either cognitive decline, health issues that are causing discomfort or a combination of the two. Physical discomfort often associated with arthritis can cause a dog to have trouble resting or sleeping. Food Allergies - While we have not seen any studies showing specifics, veterinary medicine claims that canines may have food allergies that can lead to abnormal behavior including acting hyper and having an inability to calm down. With all the high levels of chemicals found in many manufactured foods, it's easy to believe this could be the case. When a dog is constantly ingesting artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemical preservatives, this is not good for physical health and it's not a huge leap from there to a dog's mental health as well. If this is suspected, a change to home cooked food or a switch to a quality commercial brand without these elements should be considered. Summary Boxers are animated, able to express emotion and are great companions. This is not a lazy breed or one that is content to sit alone just 'being'. Expect your Boxer puppy to be hyper and for a Boxer of any age, follow the guidelines for providing proper care which will help your dog channel his energy in a health way. It may be hard to believe now, but just a few months before this picture was taken, this Boxer was fighting for her life. Just one day after finding her forever home, this Boxer pup was found to have parvo, a word that new puppy owners never want to hear, and was fighting for her life. Emergency measures had to be taken to save her. But, it did not stop there. Even if a pup initially survives parvo, support treatment is vital for full recovery. With the help of their veterinarian, the family provided at-home treatment and care, determined for their Boxer to live. First, An Overview of Parvo What is parvo? Canine parvovirus CPV infection is a highly contagious viral illness. In some cases, this can result in a lifelong heart issues. What are they symptoms? The most common symptoms are lethargy, severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, loss of appetite and due to these, weight loss and life-threatening dehydration. How do dogs catch parvo? This is an incredibly virulent virus, found in the feces of infected dogs. It can live on surfaces for up to 1 year and can be found on flooring, bowls, toys, bedding, just about anywhere that an infected dog has been. Age — This is most commonly seen with pups 6 weeks to 6 months old. Mortality rate — Dogs can recover from parvo, in fact most do. So, of course, it is vital that all pups receive their inoculations. Surviving parvo depends quite a bit on how fast parvo is diagnosed, the quality of the treatment and the age of the pup. Treatment — This is an emergency situation with a minimum of 1 week of inpatient, intensive care. Further recovery at home can take months. There is no cure for parvo; there is no method of killing the virus. Therefore, the symptoms are treated. Because this is so severe, IV intervention must be given for a hope at survival. Q: Where did you obtain your Boxer puppy from and did you have any idea that she was ill? A: We were looking to get a Boxer, and wanted to rescue. I volunteer for a horse rescue, so this seemed right for us. We also felt our other dog Bailey who is a Newfoundland mix needed a companion. We saw someone had posted online that they had gotten a puppy for their kids, the landlord raised the rent, and he needed the puppy gone ASAP. We figured this would be a good moment to help rehome an animal, and help another family. We picked the dog up in a very sketchy area of town. My first red flag! When he pulled up it was a pretty quick hand off, it was dark, and the kids were instantly in love. By the time we got the puppy home she seemed very quiet, and would not eat or drink. Our assumption at the time was she was in a transition and this was normal. The next morning Coconut was still not eating or drinking. NOPE no luck. By around that afternoon she was vomiting, lethargic, feverish, and also had diarrhea. We were now dealing with a life or death situation. We feel she may have been a pass off from a backyard breeder. Or possibly the guy truly didn't know, she was ill since he said he only had her for a few days. He was conveniently out of town when we called him for questioning the next day. All that really mattered at this point was the puppy. The emotional toll was high as we were so in love. A: The person who had placed the ad was asking a small rehoming fee which he claimed was a portion of what he paid for the dog. Q: And not that it would have changed your mind, since the pup was obviously in need of being in a loving home, but were you given any papers at all? Any health records showing vaccinations? A: When we got the dog, she came with a vaccination record that was a Do-It-Yourself vaccination kit that a breeder may use. The sheet looked professional like what a vet would use but said home kit on it. It showed 1 dose of the Parvo vaccination. Her tail was also docked. This is all the person said he had from who he got the dog from. He claimed to have had the puppy about 5 days. This brought up questions about Parvo incubation period. Did the puppy get sick from the breeder? OR was it the exposure that she had clearly received prior to us getting her. Was this man in fact the breeder? Did we just get hustled? Or did he really not know she was sick when we got her and his story was legit? All we knew was she needed our help FAST. Q: Was it the very next day that she started showing more severe signs of vomiting and diarrhea? And what was your initial response? Did you call a vet or did you make an appointment right away? A: We had her at the vet the very next am first thing. Q: Can you please describe her treatment at the vet? How ill was she and what steps needed to be taken to save her? A: When we got to the vet she was immediately tested and diagnosed with Parvo. Coconut was quickly taken away and treated as the highly contagious case she was, and quarantined. It was a very difficult moment as a parent. We were so excited to have this new member to our family, and yet now I needed to tell the kids she may not make it. Coconut spent a day and a half at the vet. And was stable. She had needed a transfusion, meds, fluids etc. We got her in before it had really cause more internal, or fatal damage. Problem was the vets office was closed on Sundays. This meant needing to relocate Coconut to a 24 hour ER facility. We felt sick and helpless. Upon needing to pick up Coconut and make a decision, we explained to our vet that we needed to be realistic, but were ready to roll up our sleeves anyway we could from home. They completely supported the situation, and had their awesome tech give us a crash course on how to administer fluid injections, and meds. It was all or nothing at this point. All we wanted was to take her home and love her in sickness or health. Q: Once you got her back home, can you please describe what that at-home care involved? A: Once we got Coconut home, we turned our bathroom into a quarantine zone. Anyone entering the bathroom must wear robes, socks on their feet, and sterilize their hands constantly. The robes were left inside the bathroom and worn over our clothes. The socks were worn to not track anything out. Morgan played her Taylor Swift CD during the day, and soothing nature sounds at night. We took shifts sleeping with her. Dylan was determined to keep his new best friend healthy and happy. Dustan became comfortable with injecting needles real quick. The first time we administered her fluids was a shock. We were not expecting the large hump on her back afterwards! Thank you Google. The fluid naturally absorbs, but it sure looked freaky for a few minutes. A needed moment of levity. On Monday we brought her back to the vet first thing in the morning. She was green lit to start on chicken and rice, and making amazing progress. She was starting to slowly eat, and her stool slowly started to come back to normal this is a big deal. It takes time to pass everything out of the body. Our emotions were on a steel roller coaster. As soon as things looked better and we would get excited, another bout of the runs happened and we would again panic. She was under quarantine for about 7 days in the bathroom. We then slowly reintroduced her to the house and other animals. Our other animals were never at risk. The first night our one cat tried to snuggle Coconut when she was at her weakest. Animals get it. Does she have any lasting effects of having had parvo? Is her heart healthy? And are you under any specific instructions regarding care, going forward? A: Today Coconut is a healthy and happy girl. We never take for granted that every day is a gift. Our vet staff was so amazing and supportive. She is all things we love about the breed. One side effect we can see at this point is she may be extra spoiled. Her favorite activities are playing with Bailey, off-roading in the desert, and going to the beach. She even won her very first Halloween costume contest this last Halloween. I need to take a moment here to thank AllBoxerInfo for all that you do. She is very sweet, and as you all know a very trainable breed. However, while I have the therapy part down, and her basics, her training will hit a ceiling with me at the helm. That was not the initial goal, but now, after all she has been thru, it feels right. She is our inspiration. She is only 6 months now and has a way to go but we have hope we can make it, she is showing us she is the right dog for the job. It would be wonderful to see her pay it forward. Q: What advice would you give to other owners to help prevent this sort of thing from happening? A: If I had any advice to give, it would be to stress how important it is for dogs to receive ALL their vaccinations before going out into the real world and socializing in public areas. I understand people want to show off their puppies, and get their fun going etc. Please do not. It felt like forever until she could go out and play. But healthy or not that what needs to be done. The risk is NOT worth it. We had the best intentions. Scammers WILL play with emotions and facts. We truly feel Coconut is a blessing in our lives and a survivor. Also, buying a pup from an ad online can indeed be risky. It's tempting of course, to try and rescue a dog that way, but you have to be exceedingly careful. The thing that makes Goldendoodles so incredibly popular as pets — especially with families that have children — is their outgoing personalities and the fact that they have a real zest for life. Vibrant, social dogs, Goldies do tend to be high-energy and boisterous pups right through their lives, which many owners love about them. You need to be prepared for this before deciding to take one of these darling dogs on. Sure, when Goldendoodles are puppies, they may run you ragged with their cheeky, mischievous behavior. After all, all dogs struggle to control their excitement when they are young. Yet, also like other dogs, Goldendoodles, too, do mellow as they age into adults. As they move from the neonatal period to the transition period to the socialization period, they will not only learn vital motor skills and start to play, but they will also begin to develop relationships with the other dogs and people around them. A top-quality breeding facility will ensure their puppies get plenty of handling and exposure to new stimulation. They will also make sure that all time spent around people is very positive for your pup. These early experiences shape how your dog will continue interacting with people throughout their lives. When you finally bring your Goldie home, they will be slap bang in the middle of the first fear stage. This often lasts from 8 weeks up until 10 weeks. Although dogs are very sensitive to new experiences, especially negative ones, during this brief period, a lot of love, delicious treats, and avoiding activities that seem to spook your pet can help them successfully navigate it. The remaining 2 weeks of these vital first 3 months are the best time to get going with their early training. This is when you are going to lock in toilet training and teach your puppy how to behave around the house. Still, they will be well on their way with the basic and most important aspects of training — the actions that will set them up for life. Depending on their Doodle type Standard, Mini, Medium… , they could be anywhere from half to most of the way to their adult size. Yet you will need to remember that they are still very much a puppy in their thinking and how they respond to things. At this time, it will still be all too common for them to become so frantic and over-excited that their good manners and their training go right out the window. Keep this in check by providing appropriate chew toys for them to chow down on. This can help save both your belongings and your poor fingers — ouch! Make sure also that during play, you are very consistent in what you are letting your hound get away with. Mouthing behaviors are only natural, but let your dog know when they go too far with loud pain noises. Withdraw from the play altogether when they push things too far. Remember that it is far easy to train proper behavior from the beginning than correct it later in life. Your dog may try to assert their dominance over you at this time. Like teens, adolescent dogs are all about finding their place in the world. This is when that early training is really going to come into play, as you will be able to redirect their negative behavior and reconfirm the boundaries that they are already more than well aware of. Remain vigilant, though, as part of the testing of what they can get away with involves beginning to think about escape. Make thorough use of toys and games throughout this period. See Also: Click the image Adulthood Just when it feels like you have hit the end of your tether for one bouncy pup all about the place, your Goldendoodle will enter adulthood somewhere around months and start to calm down. While some days it may still feel like your cute canine has ingested an entire pot of coffee or turned into a Mexican jumping bean, especially in the first few years of their adult lives, in actuality, they will have much more control of their own behavior now. They should hit their golden years somewhere between 8 and 12 years of age, depending on their size. With that infamous Goldendoodle vivacity, this is especially vital for these pups. A garden is great for bigger dogs as they can happily chase a Kong Toy or something similar about the place, effectively keeping themselves out of trouble. Alternately you could send the kids out with them, and they could all wear each other out, resulting in a lovely peaceful evening for you. If this is not an option, games of fetch in a well-secured dog park can do the trick just as well. A dog-walker can also help take some of the strain of exercising a particularly lively Dood. Mental Stimulation Boredom can be the absolute enemy of calm, especially when something noteworthy does happen, such as the arrival of a visitor or a trip around the block. If your pup is frequently left alone for long hours, you will find that they are extra-especially lively when they finally get their family back home with them and have something to do again and someone to do it with. Again, this is where canine toys can save you a lot of hassle. These days there is an excellent variety of them with some seriously cool features. The thing about Doodles is those Poodle smarts of theirs make them particularly susceptible to boredom. Puzzle toys offer intellectual challenges whereby your pup has to figure out how to get to a tasty treat, for example. This can easily keep them entertained for hours at a time. The result is a much calmer, happier dog who may not even notice when someone does ring the doorbell. Socialization gets your pooch accustomed to meeting new people, being in unfamiliar places, and dealing with different dogs and other animals. Training puts specific commands at your fingertips which can be employed when your pup is getting a little too over the top. Positive reinforcement is a good strategy, but be sure you are only reinforcing the behaviors you want to see continued. If you make a fuss of your fur baby when they are running around or jumping up, if you act as delighted to see them as they are to see you, then you are telling them with your actions that this is the right thing to do. Make a real effort to only pay attention to your pooch only once they have calmed themselves down. New Activities If you have the time, then helping your dog learn new tricks and skills can go a long way to keeping them both physically and mentally happy. Canine sports were practically invented for these offspring of working dogs. They excel at so many of them and will thoroughly enjoy participating. These kinds of activities also serve to reinforce and extend their basic training giving you even more commands you can use for behavior control. Goldendoodles are also big fans of the great outdoors in all its forms. Goldies, being the descendants of two water-loving breeds, will also likely love the chance to swim and hang about in streams, lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Too much of certain kinds of foods could heighten energy to unmanageable levels. Also, take care with the amount that you are feeding your dog each day. Likewise, snacks can cause issues here. A surprising number of calories can be found in even the tiniest treats. If you are using these for training, you may consider switching them out for a clicker or praise-based methods. If your food-focused friend is clearly never going to go for that, a surprising alternative is frozen vegetable treats. These seem to go down very well with most Doodles, according to their owners. A commonly held belief with canines is that getting them fixed can help them to be calmer, and there is some truth in this. Your puppy will likely be every bit as rowdy, but your older dog will be less of a puppet to their hormones. Goldendoodle puppies, like all other puppies, are feisty, fast, playful little things. This lasts a lot longer than you might think, given how quickly they grow to their adult size. Somewhere between 12 and 18 months of age, your dog will mature, and this will be when you will see them having a little more control. Although, they will likely be every bit as energetic as they ever were. This can be tempered somewhat through exercise and play. Is it normal for a Goldendoodle to be energetic? High-energy levels are a feature of the Goldendoodle breed and a trait that they inherit from their intelligent, working-dog parents. In this respect, it is perfectly normal for your Goldie to enjoy plenty of walks and fun. How often should I walk my Goldendoodle puppy? Daily walks are a necessity for every dog, although some breeds require a longer time outdoors than others. Goldendoodles have quite high exercise needs compared to some of the smaller, more sedate Doods. Although this will need to be tailored to their age, a good rule of thumb is to exercise them for five minutes per month of their age — twice a day. So, with a 4-month puppy, two minute walks a day would be sufficient to keep them happy and healthy. Although energy levels of these fine canines vary depending on age, life stage, and individual differences, they do tend to be at the higher end of the spectrum. For this reason, they do best in high-energy family homes or with people willing to take them on plenty of long hikes and with both a garden and the time to play with them.
