how to train german shepherd puppy at home

Minimal exercise needs and a low barking tendency make her perfect for apartment living. The French Bulldog descended from the English Bulldog in the s when it was translocated to France. The breed has flourished as an adored companion ever since. The Frenchie is known for its bat-like ears and short, wrinkled nose. She tends to have a curious and gentle nature and is notorious for being the class clown. She will often have sporadic bouts of energy followed by prolonged periods of resting. The French Bulldog is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your French Bulldog. By knowing about health concerns specific to French Bulldogs, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in French Bulldogs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for French Bulldogs. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Frenchie looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your French Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections French Bulldogs are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in French Bulldogs. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Vida Veterinary Care will also recommend preventive medication as necessary to keep her healthy. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your French Bulldog is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. The disease is caused when the jelly-like cushion between one or more vertebrae slips or ruptures, causing the disc to press on the spinal cord. If your dog is suddenly unable or unwilling to jump up, go up stairs, is reluctant to move around, has a hunched back, cries out, or refuses to eat or go potty, he is likely in severe pain. He may even drag his back feet or be suddenly paralyzed and unable to get up or use his back legs. Call us or an emergency clinic immediately! For less severe cases, rest and medication may resolve the problem. As with so many other diseases, weight control helps to prevent this problem. Spinal Deformities French Bulldogs are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities a condition called hemivertebrae , which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD is an immune system disorder common in French Bulldogs in which the intestinal lining becomes overrun with immune system cells called lymphocytes and plasmacytes. Chronic vomiting or diarrhea is common or it may flare up suddenly and then improve again for a time. Stress, diet change, or intestinal parasites may make it worse. If your friend has diarrhea or digestive upsets that are not explained by the more common reasons, diagnostic tests, which may include intestinal biopsy, will be needed. Lifetime medications and special diets are usually required to keep this bellyache under control. Unfortunately, French Bulldogs can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. Cataracts are a common cause of blindness in older French Bulldogs. Many dogs adjust well to losing their vision and get along just fine. Surgery to remove cataracts and restore sight may also be an option. Distichiasis is a condition caused by extra hairs that grow inside of the eyelid and rub on the surface of the eye. This is one of the most commonly inherited diseases in dogs, and your French Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to develop this painful condition. If untreated, these abnormal hairs can cause corneal ulcers and chronic eye pain. Several treatment options are available, and the prognosis is good once the hairs have been permanently removed. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your French Bulldog is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Because your Frenchie has eyeballs that naturally protrude, he is more vulnerable to eye injuries. Scrapes or punctures to the cornea the protective covering on the eyeball are the most common injuries. Not only do they hurt, they can become infected and affect his vision. Call us at right away if he has any problems with his eyes. A damaged cornea is painful and should be treated immediately. Medication and sometimes surgery is required. Allergies In humans, an allergy to pollen, mold, or dust makes people sneeze and their eyes itch. In dogs, rather than sneeze, allergies make their skin itchy. Commonly, the feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for this condition. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders that occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. You might notice that he runs along and suddenly picks up a back leg and skips or hops for a few strides. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from popping out of place. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Respiratory Distress Syndrome This disease, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your French Bulldog. As a consequence, the soft palate the soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth , is too long and hangs down into the airway. The nostrils are often too small, and sometimes the trachea, or windpipe, is narrow and undersized. All of these things lead to a narrow and obstructed airway. Many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, he is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, or heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and French Bulldogs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! It affects French Bulldogs more frequently than other breeds. If your dog has this disease, he will become increasingly weak and disabled in the hind legs and will eventually suffer from paralysis in his hindquarters, along with incontinence. Rehabilitation, exercise, acupuncture , and dietary supplements can be helpful, but there is no cure. A genetic test is available to determine whether your dog is at risk for this heritable disease. Mange Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. All dogs have them. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may occur. Prompt veterinary care is important to keep the disease from getting out of hand. Many pets seem to outgrow the problem, while others require lifelong management. Skin Infections Your French Bulldog is prone to a form of skin infection called lip-fold pyoderma, which occurs because the folds of skin along the lower jaw are usually moist. Bacteria and yeast can readily gain a foothold and cause a reddened, smelly area that is uncomfortable for your dog. We will examine him for this problem, but let us know if you see signs. When symptoms are severe, the excess skin folds can be surgically removed. Taking Care of Your French Bulldog at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Frenchie live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Check her facial wrinkles and eyes often. Her droopy skin and eyes can collect debris. She is well suited for apartment living; she will need a daily walk and regular inside play. She can be sensitive to warm temperatures; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your French Bulldog needs help. Preparing for your French Bulldog puppy Here is the list of things you must have before your puppy comes home: The food that I start my puppies on occasionally changes as I search for the very best products. At this time my highest recommendation is to feed a raw meat diet which consists of muscle meats, bone, organ, vegetables, and supplements to ensure your new family members berst health and longevity. You fill find these in the freezer sections of boutique pet stores. You are welcome to supplement with kibble for those times when the food is not defrosted in time, for travel, and other unforeseeable circumstances. Goat milk kefir or yogurt not cows milk! I wean my puppies onto water by 8 weeks old, however I do recommend to have a quart on hand during the transition period just in case. If not used, it can be frozen for later use or your can drink it yourself. Its very easy to digest and puppies absolutely love it! Instead choose freeze dried raw meat treats. These can be ordered online through chewy. Enzymatic cleaner for tidying up potty accidents. Regular bowls work fine but if you would like to go the extra mile there are special bowls designed specifically for brachycephalic breeds which helps slow down eating and therefore swallowing less gas and creating less gas and less chances for over eating and then throwing up those can be purchased online. Raised bowls are an extra plus! Spending all that time bent over a bowl can be painful on the joints. A raised bowl will keep proper body conformation and promote correct position of joints. Choose durable toys and generally stay away from plushies as these can be easily torn apart and the fluff inside is easy to choke on. Edible chews are okay too, just no bleached rawhide as this is toxic. They make both a vitamin-mineral wafer as well as a joint support wafer. I recommend both. Please use my breeders code for a discount on your order: nuvet. Making food available during specific intervals during the day will make bowel movements more predictable, because they typically poop within 20 minutes after eating. You can start to take away food earlier each evening to have less bowel movements over night. If feeding kibble, I highly recommend taking a moment to boil and mash some carrots. This will help to keep their digestive system settled during the stressful transition between homes. If you choose to add any additional supplements, just follow the packaging instructions. If your puppy eats all of it and seems to still be hungry, mix them another portion. There is no need to measure or count calories at this point. Growing puppies need a lot of energy, just like growing children. I will always and forever recommend only raw unprocessed diets for this breed. If this is the case I highly recommend adding canned food from the same brand. I mix this thoroughly until there are no chunks left and the mixture is uniform otherwise they will pick out the chunks and leave the kibble behind. Try not to mix other cooked meat into your kibble otherwise your puppy will never eat kibble without meat. If you are okay with cooking daily for your puppy, then by all means add cooked meat and vegetables into their kibble. Please do not feed beef or chicken based products. If you elect to feed cooked meat, choose organic turkey only at this young age. I always have clean water available day and night. If your puppy is experiencing separation anxiety and not wanting to eat then you can offer goats milk kefir or yogurt as well as egg yolks. Goats milk kefir and egg yolks are hard for puppies to resist and it will provide both hydration and calories. Your French Bulldog puppy should be kept on the diet they were started on for a few months, as changes from what they are used to can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. I am enthusiastically happy to share any resources and guide you on a diet change to raw meat feeding: French Bulldog Puppy Hygiene Your puppy does not need to be bathed unless visibly dirty. DO NOT allow water to enter the ears! Frenchie ears are erect and open, so its easy to water to get in. In addition to this, ears are dark and warm perfect for bacteria or fungus. Dry the ears thoroughly after each bath and walks in the rain and avoid allowing water near the head in general. For cleaning the ears on a regular basis weekly or more frequently I like to use cotton pads soaked in a specifically formulated cleaning solution called Ph Notix. The Ph Notix does an excellent job of melting the ear wax for an easy wipe away. Though, coconut oil, colloidal silver, and any vet prescribed ear cleaner can be used as well. Clip nails monthly at a minimum. The more frequently nails are clipped, the shorter they will become. Same applies to their tail pocket. Puppies don't typically have tail pockets, but as they matures this feature can develop. The most important step is to very thoroughly dry your puppy whenever they are wet! I check this area with each bath, and completely dry the paws especially in between the toes after each bath and each time they get wet. If you notice redness between the toes, then it is likely yeast. I personally do not brush the teeth of my dogs, and have never had a dental issue. Providing large raw real bones for chewing will naturally clean the teeth and this is something that I give all of my dogs. However if you are keen on doing so, daily brushing will provide additional protection to your dogs teeth. There are special savory flavored tooth pastes just for dogs available to make this task more enjoyable for your puppy. As a preventative measure you can also add a specially formulated probiotic into their water to support dental health called TEEF. I administer these vaccines at home in a single dose containing all five strains of virus. I use the brand name Duramune Max and I special order these to be delivered to be via one-day-air on ice to ensure their viability. This initial dose is given once your Frenchie turns at least 7 weeks old. Please wait a minimum of 3 weeks to give the next booster vaccines. This is very important, I do not recommend the leptospirosis vaccine due to a high rate of adverse reactions. It is not necessary unless your French Bulldog puppy will be in frequent contact with wildlife or livestock and you live in an area where leptsospirosis is rampent. Bordetella can be given at 10 weeks old and rabies can be given once your puppy is a minimum of 3 months old. I also give my adult French Bulldogs a booster of Bordetella kennel cough as well as canine influenza vaccine once each flu season. Deworming Simply due to the nature of puppies, I recommend you submit a fecal sample during your initial vet visit. I deworm the entire litter multiple times before coming home to you. But please understand that puppies are messy creatures. Puppies also put absolutely everything in their mouths including each others paws. So please understand its likely that you may need to continue one last treatment of dewormer when your puppy comes home, even if they are having solid poops. All of my mamma dogs are dewormed before and after having their litters as well to reduce exposure to internal parasites. Additionally I deworm all of my adult dogs twice yearly with a combination of metronidazole and fenbendazole, or drontal plus. Certain parasites like giardia are extremely difficult to eradicate in our cool and wet climate. Giardia will live in the soil and water and can be spread through wild animals coming through your yard as well. Adult dogs with strong immune systems will develop antibodies to giardia and will have no symptoms. Puppies who test positive for giarida may or may not have symptoms. I personally have never had a flea or tick problem with any of my dogs in all my years of breeding and I choose not to treat my pets with pesticides. Pesticides are teratogenic and can cause birth defects as well as neurologic disorders such as seizures. Personally I would only consider one dose of oral NexGuard during the hottest month of Summer when these parasites are most active in my geological area. Each individual dog and household must weight the risks and benefits to use or not to use pesticides based on their personal circumstances and geological area. I understand you might live in an area with a known problem with these external parasites or might be living on a farm where it will be necessary to keep them under control. There are many different kinds of medications that can be used but they treat different things, some are applied topically, some given orally, some work for one month and others up to 8 months, and some medications will also treat internal parasites in addition to external. For puppies under six months old the oral medication NexGaurd can be given for fleas and ticks, as well as off-label for mites. A third kind of treatment is a Seresto collar which is a collar made from a special material that is filled with medication that is slowly released and absorbed by your dog. My brother who lives on a farm finds favor with this method and it can be used as early as 7 weeks of age. Ridgefield, Washington. Their small size, friendly personalities , and playful nature make them an excellent choice for singles and families alike. But before you bring your puppy home, you should learn how to properly care for their specific needs. But their flat faces and many wrinkles need a bit of extra attention at grooming time. Be sure to wipe any dirt out from each fold with a damp cloth or alcohol-free baby wipe at least once a week. Any moisture left in those deep wrinkles could cause irritation and bacterial growth. Help your Frenchie stay fit with short walks, a good play session each day indoors, and plenty of opportunities to explore new areas away from home. This breed is sensitive to higher temperatures. Walks are best in the early morning or later in the evening. This breed is prone to heat exhaustion; stay indoors on hot days and keep your house cool with an air conditioner or suitable air flow from fans. Watch out for excessive panting, lethargy, unusual drooling, and bright red or purple gums. These are signs of heat exhaustion and lack of oxygen. Frenchies can get too cold, too. Watch out for shivering or breathing difficulties. As with other flat-faced dog breeds, breathing cold air puts extra strain on their respiratory systems. A warm coat and a long snuggle with you should keep your pal toasty on chilly days. Watch out for Health Issues Many purebred dogs come with a handful of common health issues. French Bulldogs are prone to breathing problems due to their short, flat faces. Watch for labored breathing, especially after playtime or walks. Heat and extreme cold can make breathing issues worse. Frenchies can also have back problems, too. If your pup is having trouble moving his or her back legs, it could be a sign of a degenerative myelopathy or a herniated disk. Some French Bulldogs can develop allergies to fleas and other insects, fabric softeners used on their bedding, and even the cleaning products you use around the house. An Ounce of Prevention All dog breeds will benefit from frequent, appropriate preventative care. This is especially important for Frenchies with active social lives and those who spend time away from home. Your vet will tell you how often your furry friend should visit. Be sure to ask about flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Fun and Games Your French bulldog is sure to appreciate new tug toys, teethers and chewers, and small toys that can be used for hide and seek. If your dog likes to play fetch or chase, choose lightweight and soft throw toys that they can easily pick up. A Friend for Life French bulldogs are playful, friendly, and sweet-natured dogs that can adapt to many lifestyles. With the right care, your Frenchie can be your best friend for many years to come. A balanced diet, regular exercise, proper grooming, and regular vet check-ups will keep them healthy and happy. French Bulldog care is a delightful experience that brings so much happiness! In this article, we have collected all the most important tips covering the ultimate Frenchie care! Are Frenchies easy to take care of? French Bulldogs, also known as Frenchies, are a popular breed of dogs known for their charming personalities and adorable wrinkled faces. When it comes to taking care of them, Frenchies are relatively low-maintenance dogs. They have a short, smooth coat that requires minimal grooming, and they are not known to be heavy-shedder. They also have a low exercise requirement, making them suitable for apartment living. However, Frenchies are prone to breathing difficulties due to their short snouts, so they may require special attention during hot weather or heavy physical activity. Additionally, they are prone to certain health issues such as skin allergies, hip dysplasia, and eye problems, so regular veterinary check-ups are important. A responsible dog breeder filters these very strictly so that the chances of occurrence can be kept to a minimum. Responsible breeders also help to identify and treat illnesses. Overall, Frenchies can be a great addition to any household with the right amount of care and attention. Frenchies are sensitive to heat French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning they have short snouts, which can make it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature , especially in hot weather. Limit exercise Avoid strenuous exercise during hot weather and opt for early morning or late evening walks instead. Use cooling products Invest in cooling products, such as cooling mats, cooling vests, or fans, to keep your Frenchie comfortable. Avoid overheating Be mindful of signs of overheating, such as heavy panting, red gums, and a lack of energy, and take steps to cool your Frenchie down immediately if you notice these signs. By taking these steps, you can help protect your Frenchie from the dangers of heat and keep them healthy and comfortable during hot weather. Keep your Frenchie fit Keeping a French Bulldog fit and healthy requires a combination of proper diet, exercise, and preventive health care. Here are some tips to help keep your Frenchie in shape: Provide a balanced diet Feed your Frenchie a high-quality, well-balanced diet appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Avoid overfeeding, as Frenchies are prone to weight gain. Regular exercise Frenchies are a low-energy breed, but they still need regular exercise to maintain their health. Offer daily walks, playtime, and other forms of physical activity to keep them fit. Offer healthy treats in moderation and avoid giving in to those puppy-dog eyes at the dinner table. Provide mental stimulation Frenchies also need mental stimulation to keep them fit. Offer interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and other forms of mental stimulation to keep them mentally and physically fit. First name Email 3. Here are some tips for grooming your Frenchie: Brush regularly Frenchies have a short, smooth coat that requires minimal grooming, but regular brushing can help remove loose hair and prevent shedding. Trim nails Regular nail trims are important to avoid painful cracks or splits. Watch out for common Frenchie health issues French Bulldogs, like all breeds, are prone to certain health issues. A responsible dog breeder will always screen the parent dogs before including them in their breeding program. By doing so, they can largely reduce the chance of passing over genetic diseases that may affect the French Bulldog lifespan. Here are some of the most common health problems seen in Frenchies: Breathing difficulties Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a short snout, and this can lead to breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather or during physical exertion. Loud breathing, snoring, and grunting are completely normal in French bulldogs. You should take your dog to a doctor if it is visibly bothering him. Skin allergies Frenchies are prone to skin allergies, which can cause itching, rashes, and other skin problems. Eye problems Frenchies can develop various eye problems, including cherry eye, dry eye, and cataracts. Hip dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a common genetic problem in many breeds, including Frenchies. It is a congenital abnormality that can cause arthritis and other joint problems. Hip dysplasia is always filtered by responsible breeders, and our puppies get tested too. Intervertebral disk disease Frenchies are also prone to Intervertebral Disk Disease IVDD , which is a condition that affects the disks in the spine and can cause back pain and paralysis. It can be prevented by not letting them jump from high places or climb stairs too much. Gastrointestinal issues Frenchies can also suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation, bloat, and megaesophagus. Provide the right diet The right diet for a French Bulldog will depend on its age, size, and activity level, as well as any individual health concerns. Here are some general guidelines to help you choose the right diet for your Frenchie: A high-quality, balanced diet Feed your Frenchie a high-quality, balanced diet that is appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Consider small, frequent meals Frenchies can also suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal problems, such as bloat and reflux, so consider feeding smaller, more frequent meals to help minimize any digestive issues. Avoid table scraps Table scraps can be high in fat and calories, and can also lead to digestive problems and food intolerance. Instead, stick to a balanced, nutritionally complete diet for your Frenchie. By following these guidelines and working with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that your French Bulldog is getting the proper nutrition to maintain optimal health and well-being. Prevent any ear problems French Bulldogs are prone to ear problems due to their floppy ears, which can trap moisture and bacteria. Be sure to dry their ears thoroughly after each bath or swim to prevent moisture from accumulating. Avoid exposing their ears to water Try to avoid exposing their ears to water, especially during baths and swims. Consider using ear protection, such as ear muffs or earplugs, to keep their ears dry. Ultimate Guide.

Welcome to the home of Jajaca Australian Labradoodles. They are incredibly fun loving, loyal and intelligent with a brilliant temperament to match. These attributes make for the perfect family companion! I have owned dogs all my life, but ran into many dramas with allergies and health concerns with my then young family. After researching the Australian Labradoodle and what the breed represents, I realised that the Australian Labradoodle was everything I was looking for. Fast forward 15 years, my daughter Cassidy, my adopted sister Nicola and I feel nothing but gratitude to be able to provide our families with the quality Labradoodles I was searching for many years ago. I am so fortunate to have been given encouragement and total support from all members of the ALA, who share their knowledge and wisdom for the betterment of the breed. All these years later and I am still totally hooked, assisting to mentor new ALA Breeders, and finding I am more in love with this breed than I ever thought possible. We are and will remain a dedicated breeder bringing up our babies in our family environment free of kennels. All our girls and boys live with loving families locally and nearby, where they are raised with rules, boundaries and discipline and loved unconditionally by their families. Our breeding girls and boys family has grown wonderfully in the last 17 years. We currently have some stunning girls and boys we are very proud of and some youngsters waiting to mature who will continue Jajaca into the forseeable future. Please visit their photo albums to check them and their breeding statistics out. They were precious, valued members of our family, the girls that started Jajaca and though we miss them everyday, their memory reminds us of why we do what we do, to share the joy they brought us with other families. Blaise beauty, Harper and Jajaca Jaycee are all now additions to our family group. Our focus as a breeder has been and will continue to be to offer quality, sound, healthy dogs as genuine family companions and never compromise the wonderful qualities of the breed. A German Shepherd rescue that focuses on adoption or rehoming is always a much safer bet for a German Shepherd than just any animal shelter you come across. Responsible rescue organizations subject potential adopters to screening applications, home visits, and reference checks in order to ensure the safety of their German Shepherds. This way, rescue organizations help dogs find a new home with a loving family, and largely prevent these dogs from ever ending up in a shelter again. That said, all of the rescues that have been chosen for this list were chosen via a strict set of criteria. The following are all excellent non-profit organizations that strive to foster, rehabilitate, and then finally rehome their German Shepherds. How do they function? Weeping Willow Sanctuary is a strict, no-kill shelter and a non-profit organization with the goal of saving as many German Shepherd dogs as they can from inhumane and unethical treatment. This rescue is committed to locating and rehoming abandoned German Shepherds in all parts of the state of Ohio. The shelter rescues GSDs from kill shelters, GSDs that are homeless, GSDs that have been in abusive homes, and owner-surrenders that have been given up for various reasons. They also function as a permanent home for senior dogs and dogs with extreme medical conditions that otherwise cannot find new homes. What do they offer? Their facilities boast a two-acre, fenced plot of land where their German Shepherd dogs are able to roam freely and enjoy socialization with other dogs as much as they want. Weeping Willow Sanctuary hosts several different events every year — from public education events to adoption events to public fundraisers specifically held for the older dogs in their care. The rescue accepts financial donations, but they mostly urge those who want to help out and have the free time to do so to volunteer since they are always in need of an extra helping hand. Of course, the team at Weeping Willow Sanctuary puts all monetary donations to good use — they utilize the funds to address the medical issues of each dog that is in their care. If you decide to adopt one of their wonderful adult German Shepherd dogs, be sure to check out their website and get in touch with them in order to inquire further about adoptable dogs. This is a small, independently-run shelter that functions primarily via Facebook, email, and Petfinder in order to provide a convenient and efficient adoption experience to people in Ohio who are looking for German Shepherd dogs for adoption. This rescue organization keeps the well-being and health of its dogs at the forefront of its operation. They seek to nurture, rehabilitate, and rehome each and every German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix dog that is in their care. This German Shepherd rescue organization functions without a primary facility for housing their dogs — instead, the dogs in their care are kept in responsible foster homes. Cincinnati Area German Shepherd Rescue is most active on Facebook, where they share pictures and information about their available adoptable dogs and other underprivileged dogs in their area. Before actually adopting one of their German Shepherds, potential new families will need to be screened and interviewed, as well as provide personal references in addition to a veterinarian reference. The rescues on this page typically have at least a couple of German Shepherd or German Shepherd mixes available. These dogs usually get adopted fairly quick and sometimes the rescues have a wait list of people wanting to adopt a new German Shepherd. By keeping up with these German Shepherd rescues in Ohio, you have an excellent chance of finding the perfect German Shepherd for you. They are located near Cleveland Ohio. However, they use the donations they do receive to spay or neuter, vaccinate, and treat dogs that are need of medical help. Dogs receive a complete health check-up and are tested for heartworms. If they are positive, they receive heartworm treatment. They also receive worming meds and antibiotics as necessary. The two founders, Deb and Jan, pay for most of the veterinary care out of their own pockets. All of the dogs are either housed with the founders of the rescue or in foster homes. This rescue can only accept dogs as long as they have foster homes for them to go to. Dogs Hope German Shepherd and All Breed Rescue takes dogs from shelters and also takes in dogs from the public when possible. However, they also want to rescue any dog that they can and are willing to take in different breeds if they have space. If you would like to adopt a dog from Dogs Hope German Shepherd and All Breed Rescue, you must be at least 21 years old and thoroughly fill out the application. The rescue will call your veterinarian and verify vaccination records for existing dogs. They or a partner rescue will come to your home to do a home visit. They want to know why you need to surrender your dog and as much information about your dog as possible. They provide lots of useful tips about providing a write-up and taking pictures. They clarify that they are willing to take your dog even if it has not seen a vet in some time. Rescue and Adoption Details Website: dogshope. However, they often have German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes at their rescue. They take dogs throughout the state of Ohio, including dogs from high-kill shelters, county-run shelters, and other rescues. Occasionally they take in owner-surrenders. Because they take so many dogs that would otherwise be euthanized at shelters, Multiple Breed Rescue often has shepherd mixes. German Shepherds tend not to do well in the shelter environment, which means they often end up on the euthanasia list and require a rescue like Multiple Breed Rescue to save them. Rather, their dogs are primarily kept in foster homes. This rescue is a registered non-profit c 3 that operates entirely on the efforts of volunteers and on donations from the public. From its founding in until , this rescue has saved over 3, animals. They hope to rescue many more animals as time goes on. If you are not sure whether you are ready for a German Shepherd, fostering through Multiple Breed Rescue is a great idea. They rely on foster homes to save more dogs. They will provide all of the supplies you need including food and medical treatment for foster dogs. You will also get all kinds of other useful supplies like crates, collars, potty pads, blankets, toys, etc. If you would like to adopt a dog from Multiple Breed Rescue, you need to be at least 23 years old and you will need to travel to Grafton, Ohio. A boarding facility allows Multiple Breed Rescue to use their facility, so this is where you would go to adopt a dog. Dogs are housed throughout Ohio, so you will need to know which dog you would like to meet ahead of time. Adoption events are conducted throughout the year and are a good opportunity to meet more than one dog at a time. Rescue and Adoption Details.

Made from genuine leather for durability and style Soft padding for extra comfort Strong and secure brass hardware Handcrafted for a luxurious look and feel Available in various sizes and colors Cons: Higher price point compared to nylon collars May require more maintenance to keep the leather in good condition The Soft Touch Collars Luxury Real Leather Padded Dog Collar is an excellent choice for those who prefer a classic and elegant look for their German Shepherd. Made from genuine leather, this collar is both durable and stylish. The soft padding ensures your dog's comfort, while the brass hardware provides a secure and strong leash attachment. Although it's pricier than nylon collars and may require more maintenance, this handcrafted leather collar is a luxurious option for your German Shepherd. These top 5 German Shepherd collars each offer unique features and benefits. However, the other collars on this list also provide excellent options depending on your preferences and budget. By considering the specific needs of your German Shepherd and your desired features, you'll be able to find the perfect collar to keep your furry friend safe, stylish, and comfortable. With numerous collar options available, it's crucial to consider specific factors to ensure you select the best collar for your loyal companion. In this article, we'll discuss the top five factors to consider when buying a collar for your German Shepherd. Size and Adjustability The first factor to consider when selecting a collar is the size. German Shepherds have an average neck size ranging between 18 to 24 inches, depending on their age, sex, and individual growth. Measure your dog's neck using a soft tape measure, allowing for two fingers of space between the collar and the neck for comfort. It's also essential to choose a collar that is adjustable. Adjustable collars usually come with a buckle or sliding mechanism, making it easy to modify the collar's size as needed. Material and Durability While German Shepherds and shepadoodles share certain traits, their collar needs can differ. German Shepherds are strong, active dogs that require a collar made from durable materials. Common collar materials include nylon, leather, and metal. Nylon collars are favored for their durability, affordability, and ease of cleaning. Leather collars, on the other hand, present a timeless aesthetic and robustness but may demand more upkeep to maintain the leather's quality. Metal collars, like choke chains or prong collars, should be approached with caution and only implemented under the direction of a skilled trainer. Choose a collar that can withstand your German Shepherd's strength and energy while remaining comfortable for daily wear. Safety Features Safety should be a top priority when selecting a collar for your German Shepherd. Reflective or brightly colored collars can improve visibility, especially during early morning or evening walks. Some collars also come with breakaway features, which can be beneficial if your dog gets caught on something while exploring. If you're concerned about your German Shepherd wandering off or getting lost, consider a collar with GPS tracking capabilities, like the Fi Collar. However, some owners get frustrated with this advice and claim that their poodle or other dog species does not respond to the command. There are two reasons for this response: 1. They understand but ignore it — The reason they ignore your command is that your pet may not respect you. He or she just does not see any reason why they need to listen or obey you. This is another problem that takes a lot of work to overcome. How Dogs View Commands, Etc. Dogs do not see the world or life in the same way that you see them. A Tan Poodle sitting on an outdoor lounge. Poodle pups, like all puppies, have really short attention spans. Poodle Puppy Training At Home First 30 Days Poodle puppies in the first thirty days of their lives are not even technically puppies yet. We call them neonates as they are still quite underdeveloped puppies are born blind, for example. It is very unlikely that anyone reading this article will be in possession of neonates, as neonates must be around their mother for breastfeeding and socialization with the litter. Generally, puppies are given around eight weeks to their new owners, but there is a lot of things the breeder can do to prepare the neonates for their future lives. The breeder can, among other things , begin socializing the dog by exposing it to more than people, begin chew toy training, potty train, and teach basic commands like sit, down, and roll over. The above is, however, quite rare, which means all these things typically must be done by the new owner when he or she adopts the dog. Bring as many friends and strangers as you can to your house. Have them come in and give your dog a treat for sitting or lying down. Let them pet the dog and touch its ears gently. When training, be sure to train your puppy with the leash on. Puppies, at this point, should be meeting as many others as it possibly can. It should have contact with many, many different human beings from all walks of life. The puppy should be exposed to people in hats, men with mustaches, old men, and children. They all should interact with the dog, so it can begin to understand that humans, small and large, represent no threat to your poodle puppy. This is also the time in which you should be training your dog in bite inhibition. Bite inhibition is incredibly important and not to be overlooked. If a puppy is not trained how to bite, it can cause serious damage when it is an adult dog. Training your dog to chew on chew toys , for example, is a good way to train bite inhibition. Also, puppies will naturally want to nibble on your hand. Between eight weeks and three months, this is completely acceptable behavior. Your efforts in this now will allow your puppy to understand the strength of its own bite. Poodle Puppy Kindergarten Three Months To Six Months Between three months and six months, your poodle puppy should be going out into the great wide world! Extensive leash training is necessary in this stage. You want to get your poodle pup accustomed to the sights and sounds of the outside world. In particular, begin to notice what kinds of stimuli make your dog nervous. People on bicycles? Men with suspenders? Whatever these stimuli are, begin to classically condition your dog to like these things. Whenever one of these stimuli comes close to your dog, give it a treat or some praise. It will begin to associate the positive feelings of eating with the people on bikes or the cars, and its nervousness will be conditioned away. Never mind: this is natural. Simply double down with the training. Juvenility, with all its awkwardness and difficulties, is as real for poodle puppies as it is for humans. Male dogs, especially, will begin picking fights at the dog park. Training, meanwhile, will continue to regress. In this critical period, socialization remains as important as ever. Take your dog to the dog park weekly and continue leash training as well as house training. You can begin to experiment with some fun things, too, like agility training. Sweet Adulthood At a certain point after poodle high school, your poodle puppy grows up. Your poodle may calm down considerably at this stage and begin to feel more self-confident and self-contained, but you need to redouble training efforts. There is no day off for training, even in adulthood. Continue to reward good habits and address behavioral issues before they can creep into the status of habit. Poodle Puppy House Training Overview While housebreaking a puppy may feel like a huge obstacle that is time-consuming at best and an undertaking that may fail at worst, there are definitely things that you can do to set your Poodle puppy up for success for potty training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. These are sturdy, open-top pens that allow a Poodle to move around, play, have all his favorite belongings food, water, toys, bed , but also keep messes contained. As a side note, these are great for separation anxiety, as they offer a secure 'den' that keeps all of a Poodle's aids right by them. And, these are perfect for the teething phase to keep a Poodle puppy from chewing apart the house. Recommended playpens to help with house training are below. These can be found with or without doors, and range from 24" ideal for toy and miniature Poodles to 48" better for standards, especially if continued to be used as the puppy grows. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Giving a Poodle incentive to do something applies to potty training, perhaps, more than it does with any other single action. Once something is a learned behavior, it become automatic though it is still nice to reinforce good behavior now and again. For housebreaking to happen quickly, you need to 1 give super-happy praise and simultaneously 2 offer the right type of reward. The training treat should be: New - It should not be something that you give to your Poodle for regular snacks. If you've found a great, all-natural and healthy snack that you'd like to keep giving, see if it comes in a different flavor. Small - House training treats need to be small. A puppy needs immediate satisfaction, and you cannot achieve this with something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. Extra flavorful - It should be appealing to a Poodle sense of smell and sense of taste, offering a burst of flavor that will encourage the desire for more. And 'more' can only happen when the Poodle goes to the bathroom in the right area. Below are our top recommended training treats. And on mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. Dogs that are simply brought 'outside' for bathroom needs rarely have a good, clear understanding of what is expected. If they are out there long enough, they may very well go to the bathroom. However, your goal should be going above this and instilling the full concept of having one area for urination and elimination needs. Choose the area wisely; what may seem like a great spot in the summer may not work well in the winter. The bathroom area should be close to the home, not a spot that is used for anything else play area, gardening, etc. Within the chosen area, allow your Poodle to choose the exact spot that he prefers. Dogs that have a choice learn much faster and are more eager to follow the rules. It is best to stand in the middle of the area with your puppy on a 6 to 8 foot leash. Allow him to circle around and, sniff. Some will then need time for the bladder to relax or for the bowel muscles to push out stool. Since young puppies have weak bladder and bowel muscles, they can often pee or poo with very little warning. Whatever you need in order to bring your Poodle outside should be ready at the exit door. This will include a pair of shoes, an appropriate coat or jacket depending on the weather, clothing for your Poodle - should there be a need, an umbrella in case it is raining, a leash and even a book or magazine to thumb though while you wait. For the times that you are home, you will want to bring your Poodle to the designated area at the following times: First thing in the morning Any time right after the puppy wakes up from a nap Every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old, every 4 hours for a 4 month old, etc. It would certainly make things easier if dogs understood what we were saying when we spoke full sentences after they did something that we didn't approve of. However, puppies that are rewarded for good deeds and quietly forgiven for accidents are able to pick up what the owner wishes for without any scolding. Please remember that you want your Poodle to respect you, not fear you. And while it may feel good to release a bit of steam if you find a puddle of pee, yelling or acting frustrated will only confused and stress a puppy that really has no idea why you are upset. Dogs learn best when they can associate a word with an action. So, you'll want everyone in the house to be in agreement as to which word s will be used for housebreaking. It's best to keep it short, and have it be something that you do not feel uncomfortable saying in public. You will use this as you head outside 'Do you need to go potty? While some puppies will instantly pee or poo, others need time. Owners that only give the pup only a few minutes may have trouble with the training. Since 5 minutes can feel like 20 if you are bored, cold or otherwise uncomfortable or antsy, plan ahead. Have an outdoor chair located right in the middle of the bathroom area and plan ahead to check your mail or email during these times. It is recommended to give the puppy a good 15 minutes and if you just know that a bowel movement is due, give it .While on this note, one of the biggest problems that owners encounter is when a puppy won't pee in his spot no matter how long there, but will pee as soon as being brought back inside. A good tip to fix this, should it happen often, is hold him after you come back inside he won't pee on you ; then head back out in about 10 minutes. While young Poodles need to be taken out often see above , if they are kept on that schedule as they mature, they will not have an opportunity to learn to hold their needs and bladder and bowel muscles will not strengthen as they otherwise would. As you puppy grows older, stretch out the periods of time in between taking him out. While the carpet may look clean after you scrub it with dish soap and a sturdy brush, soap does not eliminate enzymes that are in urine. And those lingering enzymes you won't smell these, but your Poodle will essentially scream 'This is the bathroom area! So, all areas that have been pee'd or poo'd on need to be cleaned with an enzyme cleanser. Puppies are terrific at making whining noises and barking in the middle of the night, without letting us know if they need to go to the bathroom or are just bored and wanting some attention. If a puppy pees and poos before bedtime, it is far more likely that he wants your company as opposed to having a real need. However, it is always best to be safe than sorry. The important element is that this be done in a very serious manner without any play or other interaction. Keep lights low, bring your Poodle puppy directly to his spot, wait the allotted time without speaking other than praise if the deed is done and then bring him right back. A puppy will soon learn that barking for attention at night does not bring about any interaction that would seem worthy of making a fuss but that alerting you in regard to bathroom needs does result in praise and a quick treat. It's a common occurrence for owners to bring their Poodle for a walk in the neighborhood and just let the puppy go to the bathroom along the way. However, this is a missed opportunity for a house training lesson. Bring your Poodle to his spot first and then bring him for his exercise. Housebreaking Exact Steps This is exactly how to bring your Poodle out, what to say, and what to do: 1. Head outside with your Poodle on leash and harness, saying your chosen phrase Let's go potty , and with the training treats in a small zipped plastic bag, kept in your pocket. Lead your Poodle directly to the designated bathroom area, repeating the phrase. Stand in the middle of the designated area, allowing your Poodle to roam within the diameter and sniff around. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If your Poodle pees or poos, without completely distracting your pup, mark the action with your chosen word said in a happy tone, You're going potty. During this time, be reaching for the training treat. As soon as your Poodle is done, bend to his level, give great praise in a super-enthusiastic voice Good potty, oh, you are such a good dog! If your Poodle had a bowel movement, and you believe that there may be a urination need, remain outside for an additional 5 minutes. A Final Word While you will need a bit of patience during this time, with a good plan and lots of enthusiasm from you, your Poodle puppy should be completely house trained with a few months. After you feel that he is fully trained, be sure to still bring him out often enough, and continue to offer praise to reinforce the lessons that have been learned. How to Stop a Poodle From Marking - Both males and females may display territorial marking, and this is a separate issue than housebreaking. Learn why dogs do this, and exactly how to stop it. According to a study , The Intelligence of Dogs, Poodles are the second smartest dog breed. Poodle puppies are cute, energetic, and eager to please; however, due to their higher intelligence, they may get bored quickly. Poodle Training Tips Teach your puppy his name. This should be a no-brainer. Teaching his name is the first thing you should do. Teach your Poodle puppy to sit. Her bum will naturally go to the ground. Continue practicing this until she sits without needing the treat moved above her head. Tip: Many Poodle parents use a hand signal along with the verbal cue. Next, teach your Poodle puppy to stay. Then, teach your Poodle puppy to lie down. You will get her to sit, then holding a treat in your fingers, move your hand toward the ground and out in front of the puppy. She will naturally move forward and her belly will touch the ground. Next » by docrad on 26 May - I have been on a quest to find a nice german shepherd. You would think that would be easy. I was referred to Mittelwest Kennels in Illinois. With that price in mind, I pictured in my head a really nice kennel. Entering the property with the gate that let you in was impressive, what was not impressive was the kennels itself. After getting a tour of the kennels I noticed that there were dogs sitting in crates in the barn but I did not see any empty kennel runs. I asked about that and was told their kennel was being cleaned, there were not any empty kennels to clean. During my 2 hour visit I seen things that did not impress me. Some dogs did not have water and were panting heavily, fur was a mess. When I returned home I checked her web site out, I should have done this prior to going. There are several litters, lots of litters coming soon. Where are all these puppies going to live? So, can anyone give me their experiences with this kennel and lead me to others if they think I should go somewhere else. Thanks by Blitzen on 26 May - Maybe try to find a local kennel that has fewer dogs and breeds less? If you let us know the general area where you live, someone may have some recommendations for you. I assume you are looking for a German showline? You could also try to find out if there is a local GSD breed club or an all breed club in your area. Many times they can refer you to member breeders. Good luck.If you're looking for a showline, there are 2 breeders in close proximity that I would not hesitate to refer you to. I breed working lines, but I "know" both of these women well enough to recommend them and their dogs.Either is easily found online. If you are not set on showlines, I might have something for you in the near future, but that would really depend on what your plans were for the dog. My contact info is in my profile if you want further info, but living in the same area as Mittlewest and the others I mentioned has given me a pretty good idea of where I would and would not send someone for a SL puppy. I've sold a few dogs to people who previously owned dogs from Mittelwest. I would buy this dog if the plumbing were different. In fact, I was planning on buying one of these, but alas, nature does not take puppy orders. This is a super opportunity. That is good use of this forum. They both live in Lake county so they are local. If you are looking for a working line dog Zyta and Seastian Piotrowski out around Dekalb have some that you should consider. Zyta also trains, handles and titles all her own dogs. I recently sent and LE officer to her for a family dog and he is very happy with his pup she may still have some I'm not sure. Decide what you want to do with your pup, how much time and effort you want to put into training and let the breeder whoever it is know, so they can match you up with the correct pup. Good luck Trudy by nanu on 27 May - by gsddreamer on 05 June - My boy is going to be 21 months this month. When I first got him I was going there on a regular basis for training and never saw a bunch of dogs sitting in crates. I started going again for ring training and again haven't seen that. My boy is from Mittelwest but he actually was born at the dam's owne'rs home and was with them till I got him at 2 months old. It seems to me that all the owners want are the puppies from these poor animals and don't give a damn about the animals themselves!! Isn't that being nothing but a glorified puppy mill???? The cruelty is unforgivable!! I'd love to see the owners in crates, without water, living in their own waste and being bred over, and over!! As 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, the outbreak happened this year with dogs from a local breeder. Puppies for sale at Mittelwest Shepherds in Wonder Lake are either bred on site or imported from Germany. And my only thought he was gonna die. Mittelwest's owner Julie Martinez blamed the German breeder that the puppy originally came from. It's not something that could have been foreseen," said Martinez. McHenry County Animal Control reports include a violation warning for "failing to provide veterinary care" for two puppies. It gave the breeder 24 hours to take the puppies to a veterinarian. They were taken to the vet and tested positive for parvo the next day. Experts say getting puppies with parvo symptoms to a vet fast is critical because it's highly contagious. Seven puppies in one litter all died at Mittelwest this year. In all CBS 2 can confirm more than a dozen puppies got parvo. In February, the Illinois Department of Agriculture placed a quarantine on the facility that meant none of the dogs or puppies could be moved or sold. That quarantine was lifted 18 days later by the Department of Agriculture due to the puppies "not showing any signs or symptoms" and Mittelwest "being cleaned and disinfected. But, Megan Swiechichowski purchased her puppy after the quarantine. Three days later it tested positive for parvo. Because he is a newer generation crossbreed, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC , although several other kennel clubs around the world have started to recognize this mix. That said, there has also been a lot of debate when it comes to whether or not this mix is actually a good idea to breed and sell to the general public of dog enthusiasts. To properly understand this crossbreed and what makes him tick, it is important to take a closer look at his parent breeds. The Rhodesian ridgeback is a purebred dog that was originally developed in the province of Zimbabwe, formerly known as Rhodesia. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is famous for his agility, intelligence, and ability to withstand the harsh conditions of Africa. With that being said, there are still many people who rely on this breed for working purposes. There is no denying that the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a beautiful dog. This breed is very athletic, muscular, sleek, and strong. Still, Rhodesians can be stubborn and even develop aggressive tendencies if they are not properly trained and socialized. They are also incredibly active dogs, so they require loads of exercise in order to stay happy and healthy. It all sounds like nonsense but the terms are real and have been the epicenter of national controversy amongst canine enthusiasts for years. You might have heard about crossbred dogs. They are the latest trend in the canine kingdom. Crossbreed dogs are believed to have hybrid vigour: An overall fitness and a healthier body than their purebred counterparts. And while this concept does seem promising, it is not widely accepted by all experts when it comes to crossbreeding dogs. Over the last two decades, crossbreed dogs like the Rhodesian Ridgeback have made a breakthrough and are now considered as popular to own, if not more popular to own, than their purebred counterparts. However, while many dog lovers might fall in love with the physical features of a crossbreed dog like the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab mix, the health and life expectancy of this type of dog is a real gray area. Outside of health, earlier generation crossbreed dogs may also be unpredictable when it comes to temperament and appearance. So, what can you expect when it comes to raising a Rhodesian Ridgeback? Keep reading to find out. The Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix Temperament This is a mixed breed that is known to be friendly and affectionate with children. There are various reasons that people cross-breed these two breeds to create a Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix puppy. The Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab mix can be a wonderful pet to the right individual or family as they are highly trainable and intelligent. If properly raised and socialized, Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix dogs can also make great guard dogs. Although the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab mix is a relatively friendly dog, he can also be an independent thinker who will make his own decisions. Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mixes make great family companions, and they even have the potential to do well in apartments or smaller spaces so long as their exercise needs are routinely met. However, these dogs can have a high prey drive and without early socialization and training they can develop serious behavioral issues like depression, aggressive tendencies, anxiety, and more. The key to a well trained dog is effective early training and socialization. When it comes to Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix training, the process needs to begin at an early age to ensure it is most effective. The good news is that, due to their genetic makeup, this is a mixed breed that reaches full maturity at the ripe old age of two years or so. This means that the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix has a socialization period that is fairly long in comparison to other breeds or mixes. Along with socialization, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix will also need to be properly trained at an early age. The process of training this hybrid should begin very early in its life and will require lots of time, consistency, patience, and attention. One of the most effective ways to train your Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix puppy is to use positive reinforcement training methods. These methods include the use of treats, praise, and patience as opposed to punishments, scolding, or fear. One of the most powerful tools in positive reinforcement dog training is food. Food is used to celebrate successes and also to reward desired behaviors in your Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix. This is vital when it comes to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix who, by nature, can be somewhat stubborn and hard-headed. High value dog treats include treats that are about the size of a pea, and treats that are very smelly and very chewy. These treats are all natural dog treats that include quality ingredients like real meat protein. We especially like the salmon soft dog treats! They are only 4 calories per treat, making them ideal for free or rapid feeding when utilizing them for specific training methods. We also like that these treats are made without any artificial preservatives, flavors or ingredients like wheat, soy or gluten. They are even ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs or for dogs who struggle with weight or obesity issues. Rhodesian Lab Mix dogs need consistent exercise beginning at an early age. A lot of Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab mix owners might be confused about how much exercise this mix really needs. A cross between the herd-working Rhodesian Ridgeback and the water-loving Labrador Retriever, you should expect that the Rhodesian Ridgeback mix will need at least two hours of dedicated exercise each and every day. Long hikes, jogs, runs, and swims are all great ways to help keep your dog in shape and to reduce pent up stress or anxiety. Keep in mind that the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab mix is a powerful, work-oriented dog that needs to be able to move around freely and run regularly. For this reason, he is best suited for homes with securely fenced in yards where he can romp around at his leisure. However, there is an exception to this rule if you are an especially active dog owner who is able to provide your dog with the amount of proper exercise he needs each day in order to thrive. We recommend using a no pull dog harness when you take your Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix out for walks. The above PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness is a safe and effective solution for pulling dogs as it allows you to control pulling by redirecting your dog back to you if he gets ahead. Mental Stimulation Along with proper physical exercise, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is also going to need routine mental stimulation each and every day. Keep in mind that this mix comes from two parent breeds with working origins, and without a job to do the Rhodesian Ridgeback Lab Mix could be prone to boredom, anxiety, stress, and destructive behaviors. Some owners believe that just because their dog loves to run around outside or chew on various toys that they are receiving enough mental stimulation. In recent years, however, a new trend in crossbreeds has grown to the point where it is the height of fashion. This is the trend to breed two different purebred dogs together, creating a new and exciting hybrid breed, commonly known as a designer dog. The Rhodesian Labrador, or Labradesian, as it is sometimes known, is just one of these breeders creations, and one that is growing very quickly in popularity. This is not surprising since they are a mix of both breeds involved traits and appearance, creating an absolutely fantastic designer dog. The Rise Of The Designer Dog Before we can look closer at the Rhodesian Labrador, it would be useful to understand the craze of the designer dog and how and why it came about. Designer dogs have, as you are about to find out, their advantages and disadvantages that you will want to consider before deciding whether to get one. Designer dogs, unlike most cross breeds, have parents that are both purebred. The decision to breed them is always conscious, and the intention is to create a specific hybrid dog. Breeds are chosen on the basis of producing a mix of certain temperaments and looks. There are no guarantees, however, what combination of these you will achieve. Whilst not knowing exactly what traits you are going to conjure up by breeding two purebred dogs together may be a slight disadvantage of owning a designer dog, there is a huge advantage that truly outweighs it. This involves the highly important issue of canine health. Conventional wisdom states that mixed breeds are consistently healthier than their purebred counterparts. This is because pure breeds are bred from the same gene pool, and a limited one, that often involves familial genes. Known as inbreeding this practice can lead to all sorts of health issues that can affect your beloved family pet. Cross breeding to create a hybrid designer dog, on the other hand, allows the gene pools to open right up. Dogs that are used come from two entirely different gene pools meaning that recessive genes that carry health problems are buried. The result of this? A far healthier bred dog that requires fewer visits to the vets and lives a longer, happier life! Whilst the Rhodesian Labrador is a relatively new addition to the designer dog family, and the success of breeding them for health purposes is relatively unknown, it has been known to succeed in other hybrid mixes. A Brief Overview Of The Rhodesian Labrador The Rhodesian Labrador is generally a good looking, gentle, loving, yet determinedly headstrong breed that makes the perfect family pet. They are large and energetic, share a strong bond with their humans, and can outplay even the most playful child. Though they love being outdoors, and all activities outdoorsy, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is not an outside dog. Rather, they need to be tucked up inside sharing your treats and sofa, if allowed, and not outside in a kennel. They love nothing more, so be prepared, than to relax across your knee during quiet time. Training brings out the best in the Rhodesian Labrador, so be ready to put some time and effort into doing this. Untrained, this breed may get a little on the domineering side, which you definitely do not want. Training needs to be firm but fair with the Rhodesian Labrador responding best to positive reinforcement. You should also be aware that the Rhodesian Labrador is a protective breed of a dog that will be wary of strangers and may posture. This is not, however, this breed being aggressive, as they are not, rather they are simply warning the perceived threat away. Finally, it is worth mentioning that if you are looking for a breed of a dog that can be registered as a pedigree with the American Kennel Club, then the Rhodesian Labrador is not that dog. This hybrid breed currently is not accepted by them as a breed of its own. This is because, as we have already stated, the hybrid that is the Rhodesian Labrador can be a mix of any, all of, or even none of their individual traits. The Rhodesian Ridgeback A true working dog that has been used to hunt and retrieve game, protect the family, and property, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a refined crossbreed in itself. It was established in the early 16th century when dogs of the Boer settlers were bred with tribe dogs such as the Khoikhoi, Mastiff, Deerhound, and Great Dane. A couple of centuries later, in , the Reverend Helm brought two of these wonderful dogs to Matabeleland. Here, people soon learned of their prowess when it came to being used as hunting dogs, and began to use them themselves. As we now know, lion killer is not strictly true as though the Rhodesian Ridgeback was indeed used to hunt lions, they never actually killed them. Rather, they hunted lion down, cornering them until their owner could catch up and deal with them. This bravery added to the loyalty that the Rhodesian Ridgeback displayed soon made them a highly trusted and highly prized companion. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is, according to the kennel club, a fast and powerful athlete that is a whole lot of a hound! They are described as faithful friends who are protective of loved ones, and full of affection and love. They are also, on the other hand, strong-willed and independent, needing firm but fair training. They can be domineering if they are allowed to be, so need a strong-willed owner. Looks wise, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is described as standing at between 25 to 27 inches if male and 24 to 26 inches if female. They can weigh in at up to 85 lb. Color wise, there is only one which the Rhodesian Ridgeback comes in and it is described as wheaten. This, however, can be of varying shades from pale flaxen to burnished red. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is listed by the American Kennel Club as the 42nd most popular breed of the clubs .The Labrador Retriever Classed as one of the most popular breeds in all of America, the Labrador Retriever originated from Newfoundland, an Easterly province of Canada. Here they would be used by a fisherman to help catch fish that came loose from their nets or to jump into the freezing cold water and help pull the nets out. In the s, English ships brought the Labrador Retriever to England where they were bred with Spaniels, Setters, and other types of Retriever to enhance the breeds instinct for hunting. This was highly successful and the Labrador Retriever we know today was born. Regarded as incredibly easy to train, and renowned for their hunting and retrieving ability the Labrador Retriever has developed over the years into much more than a hunting dog. Today they are also used for drug detection work, police work, guide work for the blind, sledding and carting, and search and rescue. According to the American Kennel Club, within which it ranks at number 1 for popularity out of breeds, the Labrador Retriever is a sturdy and well-balanced breed with a dense and hard coat. This coat comes in a glorious array of colors from yellow to black, and luscious chocolate, with the glorious fox red and silver being, also included but not recognized specifically. Standing at up to .They are classified as a sporting dog by the American Kennel Club but appear at Crufts as a gun dog. Technically, they are both with sporting just being another way to describe the gundog group. Personality wise, Labrador Retrievers are great big bundles of love that will bond with the whole family and always greet you with a wagging tail and smile. They make great and loving companions who socialize well with humans and other dogs alike. Quite the keen athletes also, Labrador Retrievers love to run and swim. Marathon games of fetch will be on the cards for anyone who invites this breed into their home. The Rhodesian Labrador — Appearance Image from petrescue. The chest is deep and supports a solid neck and fine elegant head. The top of the head is rounded slightly in shape with an indent often being present between the eyes. The eyes themselves are always bright, alert, and full of curiosity and character. They are a rich deep amber or a darkish brown in color with a rounded shape and a dark rim to them. Beneath the eyes, the muzzle is long and pointed and ends in a nose that is always black. The mouth of the Rhodesian Labrador has a black rim to it and teeth that meet in a neat scissor bite. Ears are set wide apart on this hybrid breed and almost frame the head. At the other end of the Rhodesian Labradors body, a long tail completes the design of this handsome breed with its elegant stance. Well, almost that is! The Rhodesian Labrador — Temperament Unlike appearance, which can vary in the Rhodesian Labrador, temperament is a little more certain. This is mainly due to both the breeds involved in this hybrid being similar in personality and behavior. Both, for example, are calm and confident, and both are loving and loyal. Where the Labrador Retriever and Rhodesian Ridgeback do differ is in the tendency to be stubborn and possibly domineering. This is not a trait that the Labrador often displays, rather it is the domain of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. This trait makes them harder to train, but not impossible, it just takes hard work and the ability to be firm but fair. The Rhodesian Labrador usually inherits this trait. Calm indoors and energetic outdoors the Rhodesian Labrador is the ideal family pet. They love children and will play fetch with them all day long, often outplaying the child. They are also protective of those they love, but never aggressive. They may, however, posture and bark in the presence of those they see as a threat to their family, but they will not attack. The calm nature of the Rhodesian Labrador means that even though they are a large dog, they can adapt quite well to apartment living. They will, however, need frequent exercise such as walks to prevent them from becoming a destructive force within your home. As Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Labrador Retrievers come from a hunting background, the Rhodesian Labrador may inherit the prey instinct. This means they could be prone to chasing small animals and squaring up to other dogs. Good training with socialization at an early age should take care of this trait, but it pays to keep your Rhodesian Labrador on a leash until you are sure they will not chase. Overall, the Rhodesian Labrador could be described as a big dog that has a heart that is even bigger! They are loyal, loving, playful, intelligent, affectionate, and make a fantastic family pet. Rhodesian Labrador — Maintenance Putting it simply the Rhodesian Labrador is incredibly easy to care for and requires very little maintenance. They have no special requirements that will take up lots of your time. Time wise, all in all, care for your Rhodesian Labrador should take up a little more than an hour per week. A moderate shedding breed the Rhodesian Labrador requires a thorough brushing on a weekly basis. This should be done with a stiff bristled brush or a product like the Furminator. This will remove any loose fur, including the undercoat that is inherited from the Labrador Retriever. You may also need to occasionally clip your Rhodesian Labradors claws. Due to not always being able to tell where the vein is in the claw, many owners choose to use a groomer or their veterinary clinic to perform this task. With their large floppy ears, the Rhodesian Labrador is especially prone to ear infections. Because of this regular cleansing of the ears is recommended. This can usually be done with simple ear cleansing wipes, but if you notice a dirt buildup ear cleansing liquids are also widely available. Bathing is not a regular necessity when it comes to a Rhodesian Labrador and should only be done when they are really dirty. If you need to bathe them make sure you use a gentle dog-specific shampoo and ensure you thoroughly rinse. Finally, teeth cleaning is a care activity you should be performing on a weekly basis. Do not rely on teeth cleansing treats to do this job for you. Dog toothbrushes and toothpaste are widely available and as with any care regime, you should start performing this task from an early age. Special puppy brushes that are slipped on to your fingers can be purchased to help you accustom your Rhodesian Labrador to this task. Rhodesian Labrador — Activity Requirements Rhodesian Labradors have a lot of energy and require the time and opportunity for them to expel this. They should be walking for at least 12 miles a week and be participating in 2 hours activity a day. Agility, fetch, chase, and even training sessions are all excellent ways to give your Rhodesian Labrador the exercise they need. As mentioned before, this breed loves to play all manner of games, especially the one called fetch! They are also intelligent enough that sports like agility will be a breeze for them. It is worth noting that, also as pre-mentioned, the Rhodesian Labrador can have a high prey drive meaning they will chase after small animals, and possibly other dogs. When doing this they will also not always be responsive to recall. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep your Rhodesian Labrador on a leash whilst in public places. Extending leads are perfect for this breed as they mean your dog can have a range of up to around 8 meters away from you whilst still being under your control. Rhodesian Labrador — Food Consumption The Rhodesian Labrador is a breed that just loves their food and will eat virtually anything that is offered to them. It is, however, worth remembering that this breed also puts on weight very easily and can become obese quite quick. Fully grown Rhodesian Labradors should be eating around 2. Any treats given should be accounted for by feeding smaller meals. Feeding times are best spread out throughout the day, say three meals a day, to ensure they burn off the calories they are in taking. Please note Rhodesian Labradors do make excellent food thieves and are of a size that food simply placed on a counter will not be out of their reach. Make sure any food, that you do not want them getting, is secure and safe from stealthy paws. Rhodesian Labrador — Health As with all breeds of dog, the Rhodesian Labrador is more prone to certain illnesses than others, and this should be taken into account before making the decision to own one. Rhodesian Labrador major health concerns are canine hip and joint dysplasia, hyperthyroidism, and gastric dilation volvulus, commonly known as GDV. Canine hip and joint dysplasia — This is an abnormal formation of usually the hip, or less commonly elbow socket. In its more severe form, it can lead to crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. It is more common in larger dog breeds and there is no complete cure. It can, however, be treated with painkillers and anti-inflammatories, and sometimes if suitable surgery. Hyperthyroidism — This health concern occurs when your Rhodesian Labradors body produces too much of the thyroid hormone. Symptoms include lethargy, exercise intolerance, mental dullness, weight gain, obesity, and an intolerance to the cold. It is, however, treatable with Thyroxine which will offset your Rhodesian Labradors low thyroid function. Gastric Dilation Volvulus GDV — A rapidly progressing and life-threatening condition that is commonly associated with feeding your Rhodesian Labrador large meals. This in turn causes the stomach to dilate, because of food and gas, and can get to the point whether neither is expelled. The stomach will then expand and dilate causing a pressure buildup which can be fatal. Surgery is needed for this condition. Whilst the above may all sound really scary, they are certainly not common occurrences with the Rhodesian Labrador. They are, however, conditions you should be aware of and prepared to deal with should the need arise. Other conditions that may affect your Rhodesian Labrador but that would be minor concerns are ear infections and glaucoma. Ear Infections — As already mentioned in the care section, Rhodesian Labradors are prone to getting dirty ears which can become infected. This is usually due to bacteria and yeast growth and symptoms of infection include redness, a bad odor, and swelling. You may also find your Rhodesian Labrador trying to paw at their ears in an effort to clean them or frequently shaking their head. This is an indication that the infection has become painful and that you should seek veterinary help. Glaucoma — This is a disease of the optic nerve in which pressure is placed on the eye. If left without treatment, this condition can become chronic causing permanent damage such as blindness. Treatment varies including drugs or the possible draining of excess fluid. It is worth mentioning here that annual checkups for your Rhodesian Labrador are a really good idea. These can be done at the same time as their yearly vaccinations. In fact, many veterinarians offer packages that include both vaccinations and a checkup that are usually exceptionally well priced. Rhodesian Labrador — Puppies As a puppy, the Rhodesian Labrador will be highly energetic and love to actively play for which they need lots of safe space. This should take the form of a well-enclosed garden from which they cannot escape, or a leash being on them when out in public. It is worth noting that due to possible joint injuries, which we have covered above, that the Rhodesian Labrador puppy should take frequent but short walks. Rhodesian Labrador puppies should be fed a high-quality suitable food so that they grow healthy and do not become obese. As a guide, the weight of your puppy at 6 months old should be no more than 23 lb, and at 12 month 40lb. Like any other breed, pure or hybrid, you should always research possible Rhodesian Labrador breeders carefully. Visit the homes where the puppies are living, and insist on seeing both Mum and Dad. Watch how the breeder interacts with the puppies and how the puppies respond to them. As always anything much cheaper than this you should avoid at all costs. This is because it may be a good indication that the breeder may be running a puppy mill. Consider owning a Cairn Terrier! In this article, we explore who would benefit them as furry friends! This is true even as puppies, and this comes from their Rhodesian Ridgeback heritage. The puppies are somewhat stocky and thick. They have muscular builds that are similar to grown Ridgebacks. Instead of overreacting when this occurs, you should show them a lot of praise when they do something right, along with giving them treats. However, they will need to be walked daily so they can let off their energy. Socialization will also help. However, you should always be careful. These dogs make great companions for kids and they love playing. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are affectionate and playful, and they are also very protective of their families. They love playing with children and they will also be very protective of their nuclear family. If they are very active, you can take this to 3 cups. You want to keep their food out of their reach. Lastly, choose kibble with large pieces to help avoid bloating. As house pets, they are going to do fine with walking each day for exercise. However, if you want your dog to be playful, you want to make sure that you are playing with them. Otherwise, it could affect its health badly. Without the proper exercise, your Rhodesian Labrador will have to be fed less and its nature might cause overeating. This can lead to diseases such as bloat. Something else to be careful about is the deterioration of the joints and hips. The reason for this is due to their instinct to be aggressive and alert towards strange animals and unfamiliar people. They also might bark when you take them to the park and people try to pet it. The good news is that they are fast learners and want to do everything that they can do to please you. Be consistent and firm with practice and give them positive reinforcement such as treats. It is also important for owners to avoid keeping the Rhodesian Ridgeback Labrador on a short leash or a cage. It prefers to move freely about the house and interact with its family. A retractable leash is also recommended. You will want to brush him twice per week at least using a bristle brush. Sometimes, this hybrid will inherit the double coat for which the lab is known, which means it will need to be brushed more frequently. This means that bacteria grow, and this can cause infections. You will also want to keep up with their nails. Because Rhodesian Labradors have large frames, they are prone to problems with their joints and hips. Minor Conditions.
