Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Box , Spotsylvania, VA .Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. Available: Now Hey everyone! Chance was an owner surrender to the animal shelter and was in rough shape. Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care.

Both of its poodle and golden retriever parent breeds are known for their intelligence and trainability, and Goldendoodles have inherited this breed trait. Much like a poodle, Doodles are sensitive dogs, and positive reinforcement is a must to bring out the best in them. How Obedient Are They? Older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders can benefit significantly from the warmth and sweetness of these adorable Goldendoodle pups. Are They Easy to Train? Doodle puppies can be mischievous and cheeky, but aggression is practically unheard of. Goldendoodles have loads of energy and require regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and calm temperament. A Goldendoodle need a moderately high level of outdoor activity — usually a minimum of 30 minutes, but ideally one hour, of moderate to vigorous exercise per day will keep Goldendoodle puppies at their best. What Is a Bernedoodle? A Bernedoodle is the offspring resulting between the breeding of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. A Bernedoodle waits for his owner. The Bernese Mountain Dog is easily recognizable for its black and rust or tan colored fur, sporting a white bib and white on the muzzle and forehead. Their thick, long coat sheds almost constantly, but their affectionate nature and love of children and other pets make them ideal. A Poodle is also one of the most beloved breeds. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, they are a no to low shedding breed with boundless energy. They require exercise and mental stimulation to prevent unwanted behaviors making them ideal for an active lifestyle. The pairing of these two breeds results in a Bernedoodle puppy exhibiting the best characteristics of both parents in one adorable bundle of fur. Something to remember is that Bernedoodle coats can be curly, straight, or wiry, and the curlier the coat, the less shedding you will have. With three different sizes , from Mini to Standard, Bernedoodles also come in various colors and can even be solid colored. They are happy, fun-loving dogs, and crossing the two breeds lessens some genetic factors, such as hip problems and the shorter life spans of larger breeds. Namaste Bernedoodles Located in Dallas, Namaste Bernedoodles has been breeding dogs for over three years with an average rating of 4. A Bernedoodle is a "designer" dog, an intentional, hybrid cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred Poodle. Bernedoodles can be toy, mini or standard, depending on the size of the Poodle. What about their temperaments? While it varies from dog to dog, the Bernedoodle tends to get the best of both worlds from the Bernese and the Poodle. It has been my experience that Bernedoodles are alert, fun, goofy, loving, playful, sociable and occasionally aloof. I can't imagine a better family dog. Bernedoodles tend to be good around people of all ages, including children, and make excellent companions. Bernedoodles are very intelligent and pretty easy to train. They are eager to learn new tricks and please their owners by showing off their learned skills. The Bernese and the Poodle can both be stubborn, strong-willed dogs so it is important to train your Bernedoodle to know right from wrong and to establish yourself as the leader in your relationship. Bernedoodles tend to play when it's time to play, but love to sleep when it's time to sleep. In other words, they have a moderate activity level. Some of the Bernedoodles in our family love to swim, but others prefer to avoid the water at all costs unless, of course, they're drinking it! Every Bernedoodle is different, but most are low to non-shedding dogs. The type of coat generally determines how much your pup will shed. The curlier the coat, the less shedding tends to occur, while the straighter the coat, the more they tend to shed. There are three coat types: curly, wavy and straight. All will shed less than purebred Bernese. The less the dogs shed, the more hypoallergenic it is considered. Most people with allergies relating to dog fur are fine with wavy-coated dogs. Again, the grooming will depend on the type of coat your dog has. We take our Bernedoodles to the groomer every months. However, because they don't shed much it's important to take care of your doodles coat, so we brush our dogs at least three times a week. What does that mean? These are different generations of Bernedoodles, determined by the breed of the parents. F1 Bernedoodles are a cross between a purebred Bernese and a purebred Poodle and are the most common. F1b Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernedoodle and a purebred Bernese or a purebred Poodle. F2 Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernedoodle and a Bernedoodle. F2b Bernedoodles are a cross between an F2 Bernedoodle and a poodle. How long can I expect to have my furry friend? While it can't be certain how long your dog will live, it is expected that a standard Bernedoodle will live about for years. That's a pretty long time! Are there any health concerns I should look out for? Bernedoodles tend to be healthier than their parent breeds, but they can still be prone to conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye problems. Skin problems, such as hot spots and allergies, are also seen in this mix. Their stomachs can also be sensitive, and sometimes it takes a while to find the perfect food for your dog's digestive system. Just like almost every other breed of dog, they can get cancer. While Bernedoodles are less prone to genetic disease, testing is still required. We have tested our parent Bernedoodles and cleared them for: 1. If you click and purchase, we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Learn More Anyone planning to adopt a Bernedoodle puppy knows how difficult it is to find reputable breeders. This Dood really does live up to its reputation of being a gentle giant! They make great family companions, but also excellent therapy and service dogs. So, before you choose a Bernedoodle breeder in Texas, here are some things you should look for. Although a rather costly extra step, health screening is the best way to ensure that the puppies come from healthy bloodlines, but also to minimize the risk of the puppies inheriting any serious genetic conditions. With that being said, an ethical breeder will also back their breeding program with a health guarantee. Health guarantees are usually applicable for the first one or two years from adoption, and they should cover any life altering and life threatening genetic conditions. You can find plenty of customer reviews on Google, Facebook, here at Doodle Doods , Yelp, Reddit, or on your local online forums. This exceptional breeder raises Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles in Texas. Each puppy is properly socialized and cared for before adoption. Their parent dogs are full-fledged members of the family and enjoy their life to the fullest. They even get to travel with the family! What Makes This Breeder Unique?

This is an exciting phase for both owners and puppies alike! At two weeks old, puppies should have their ears open, be alert, and start opening their eyes. At this stage, puppies start to stand, walk, and sit without falling over. With this rapid increase in function, puppies can begin to socialize with each other and their mother. Puppies begin to explore the world around them. They can hear, smell, and see and their canine teeth are growing in next to their incisors. When they play, four week old puppies will begin to exhibit distinctive body language such as play bows, as well as growling. Four week old puppies are much more independent. They have freedom out in the play yard through a dog door. Start learning to go outside to potty. Week 6 WEEK 6 Mom usually will not let puppies nurse at this stage and wants to be away from the pups. Some puppies complete the weaning process by 6 weeks old. At this age, they are still socially developing and learning how to be dogs. Because they are so keen to learn, we work more on potty training and no bite. We also start socializing them with other dogs and or older puppies. In addition, at 7 weeks old, your puppy is noticing it can get frightened. We may have limited resources in rural parts of Arizona, so contact us to see if we serve your area. We do not adopt dogs to people outside Arizona. DLRR does its best to match the right dog with the right family by finding out as much as possible about the potential adoptive family before placing a dog. If you are interested in knowing what dogs we have available, please visit Our Dogs page! This does not account for the cost of medical care provided to our dogs with complex medical issues. All dogs placed by DLRR will be spayed or neutered. Several ailments, including some types of cancer, are prevented by spaying or neutering. Most of the dogs we intake are young adults who have outgrown their puppy cuteness and are quite active. The Dog-a-Log shows all our dogs available for adoption. Not all available dogs are in foster care, so information about them may be limited. The foster knows the most about the dog and will be able to answer any questions you might have, as well as to arrange a meeting with the dog and your family. Our fosters will advise if you are a match for their Lab. If the foster lets you know you are a match, you have 24 hours to call the foster back with your decision. The Lab cannot be shown to another family during this hour period. Please keep in mind, rescuing a Lab is a commitment, not a convenience, and most rescued dogs need extra love and patience to feel secure in their new environment and may require some time and training to become their best! Steps to Adopting a Dog: Make sure a Lab is for you. If you have any questions, please contact us. Talk it over with everyone in your household, and make sure that everyone feels the same way about adopting a rescue dog. Think about your schedule and decide when and if you will have time to spend with your dog. Who will be responsible for taking care of the dog? Finally, take a look at your home. Where will the dog sleep? Where will the dog eat? Fill out our Adoption Application. Complete our online adoption application. We reserve the right to refuse any application for any reason. A DLRR representative will contact you for a home visit. One of our volunteers will contact you to arrange to visit your home. Cases in which a Virtual Home Visit is not possible will be put on hold and applicants will be notified of the delay. The volunteer will virtually visit your home to meet your family and listen to your needs. This helps to determine whether the home is a suitable environment for a Labrador Retriever and help us find the Lab best suited for your family. The Dog-a-Log showcases our adoptable dogs and is emailed twice weekly to approved adopters. Your whole family will meet the dog that may be right for you. We require that all members of the family are present to make sure everyone agrees on the perfect match. Take your new family member home. You will then pay DLRR your adoption fee. We will provide support to you after the adoption to make sure that your new friend becomes an integral part of your family. Common bacterial causes of CIRDC include: Bordetella bronchiseptica Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus Mycoplasma spp CIRDC is spread through direct contact and is typically diagnosed by veterinarians after a dog's owner notices abrupt coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge. These symptoms often occur after a number of animals have shared a common space, like a pet care facility, for example. Treatment is determined by the severity of the disease i. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases. The irritation they cause to nasal passages can cause runny noses in dogs. These mites can affect all kinds of dogs, regardless of breed, sex, or age. Apart from nasal discharge, other symptoms of nasal mites include nosebleeds, sneezing, impaired smell, itchiness around the face, labored or noisy breathing, and head shaking. Nasal aspergillosis in particular is a fungal infection that affects many animals, both domestic and wild. There are several species of Aspergillus known to trigger respiratory infections in animals. Oftentimes, the infection will be localized in the nasal cavity or sinuses of a dog, but in rare cases it may spread to the eyes and skull. Treatment of nasal aspergillosis typically involves the prescription of antifungal medication, which is administered either orally or nasally. Dogs have a magnificent sense of smell and regularly put their nose to work in exploring the world around them. This, in turn, can lead to nasal discharge in dogs, as well as general irritation and nosebleeds. If left untreated, the foreign object could lead to infection or worse. Nasal cancer A runny nose in a dog is one symptom of a nasal tumor. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, facial deformities, and neurologic abnormalities. To diagnose a nasal tumor, your vet may first order a CT scan to understand the scope of the condition. From there, they may conduct a tissue biopsy and extract tissue from around the nasal area. If nasal cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatments that can be attempted. Definitive radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT may be employed to fight cancer. However, if the cancer has spread into the bones, life-saving treatment may not be possible. Instead of sweating throughout their body, dogs sweat on the pads of their feet and, sometimes, through their noses. Promptly reporting symptoms will help your vet determine an accurate diagnosis. An early diagnosis also means that treatment can start sooner, which enables your pup to get quick relief. At this point, your vet may order a range of tests to help facilitate an accurate diagnosis. For instance, a rhinoscopy, x-rays, or other lab work may be ordered to dig deeper and discover the root of the issue. Below, we explain some of the available treatment methods for the causes described earlier in the article. An allergy test or elimination diet trial may help to shed some light on the allergen affecting your dog. Infections In the case of infections, antibiotics are often needed to combat harmful bacteria. This object may not only be the reason your dog has a runny nose, but also can serve as a source of pain and irritation. Nasal cancer As we mentioned above, treatments such as radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT can be effective in battling nasal cancer in dogs. However, once cancer spreads to crucial areas such as the bones, little can be done to treat it. If the nasal discharge is clear, it may be a sign of a seasonal allergy or a reaction to the heat. However, if nasal discharge is discolored, bloody, or has pus in it, you should take your dog to the vet. When in doubt, schedule a consultation with your vet. What can you give a dog for a runny nose? If allergies are at fault, then allergy medicine may help soothe symptoms. If an infection is the root cause, then antibiotics may prove effective. In any case, always talk to your vet before administering medication to your dog. Final Notes A sense of smell is central to a dog—it allows them to perceive the world around them and better understand their environment. Beyond that, you may be worried that a runny nose is a sign of a more serious underlying health condition in your dog. While some serious ailments such as cancer are associated with runny noses in dogs, other causes tend to be more mild. If your dog has a runny nose, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. Published on Nov 12, and updated at Apr 04, .If a viral infection is suspected, the history and examination may be enough for a diagnosis. However, your vet may ask to do a nasal swab cytology, which would involve using a swab to gently obtain some discharge to examine under a microscope. A rhinoscopy scope of inside of nose is also done to look deeper inside the nose to see if a biopsy is needed. If additional tests are needed, blood tests do not usually reveal the cause for nasal discharge. They may, however, show indications of other underlying systemic issues. X-rays or advanced imaging such as a CT scan may be required. Treatment For Runny Nose in Dogs Here are some ways you can help at home: Until your dog is seen by a vet, continue monitoring them for worsening signs. If your dog is not eating well, try warming up canned food so they can smell it better, making it more palatable. After your pet has a diagnosis, treatments will vary depending upon the underlying cause. Allergies If seasonal allergies are the offender, your veterinarian may offer supportive care or allergy medications, such as antihistamines or other prescription medications, to help ease the clinical signs. Cancer With any nasal tumor, your veterinarian will go through a series of diagnostics to determine the type of tumor, but also to determine if it has spread throughout the body. Once the tumor is staged identifying the class and level of tumor , your vet will determine an overall treatment plan. Cleft palate Because of the opening in the palate that leads to the nose, food and water can get into the nose and cause a multitude of problems. Almost all cases of cleft palate require surgery to correct the abnormality and to help prevent additional and potentially fatal medical issues, such as aspiration pneumonia or infection. Dental Issues If your vet suspects a dental issue, they will do dental X-rays to see the condition of the roots and bones. Your vet may prescribe antibiotics, pain medication, or extractions, then recommend a prescription diet. Infectious Treating the cause of an underlying infectious illness is entirely dependent on the infectious agent. In the case of kennel cough or pneumonia, if a bacterial infection is involved, antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. In the case of fungal and parasitic infections, antifungal and antiparasitic medications are prescribed by your veterinarian. Featured Image: iStock. I have been reading a lot of tips and info about Pugs and general dog care on the web. I understand that Pugs generally tend to suffer from colds more frequently, than the other dogs with normal snouts. I would really like to know if its a cause of concern and is it required to visit a vet every time my Pug shows symptoms of cold? She is otherwise very active and in good health. As an alternative I would like to know if there is a home remedy for such frequent colds and runny nose. Am I right that Pugs can get a lot of colds? Thanks for your answer. Answer: This is a very good and important Pug dog question, as one must keep a close eye on a Pug showing possible cold symptoms. Studies have shown that Pug dogs do not suffer from colds more often than other dog breeds. Why do people think they do? Because with the Pug the symptoms are stronger and more noticeable. When another breed gets a cold, they may have a bit of a runny nose. But when a Pug dog gets a cold, it is extremely noticeable. As you say, their snouts are different that most other dog breeds. There is often a lot of congestion and a lot of related noises such as even more snorting, wheezing and snoring than usual. Other conditions may mimic a cold - When a Pug shows cold symptoms quite often, this could actually be allergies. Dogs can suffer from allergies just as humans do. The symptoms can be the same as a cold. With canines, colds due to virus easily turn into infection and with the Pug being a brachycephalic breed with compacted nasal passages, this is even more common. Finally, there are other less common diseases and viruses that have cold-like symptoms including kennel cough and distemper. When should you bring her to the vet? While you don't want to bring your puppy or dog to the vet for every case of minor eye or nasal discharge, you will want to keep in mind some signs that do warrant further testing: Cold symptoms that last longer than 3 days. This includes runny nose, coughing, loud breathing and other Any worsening or additional signs including fever, not eating , not drinking, severe weakness, hacking severe cough Testing will be done to look for allergies or other sources of the cold-like symptoms and treatment will vary depending on the findings. Antihistamines are often given for these types of issues and antibiotics are needed for a wide array of infections including an ear, nose or throat infection that a Pug may have developed. More serious disease such as kennel cough and distemper will need to be ruled out. Regarding home remedies for dog colds: You may find some across the web, but please be careful. The Pug dog is extremely sensitive to what he ingests and we strongly suggest never experimenting with home remedies. You can do a few simple things that one would do for humans: Allow your Pug to rest a lot, encourage drinking fresh clean water and limit exercise until she is feeling better. Be sure to keep up with wiping any discharge from the face, including the eyes, snout and facial wrinkles. To sum it up: 1 Bring her to the vet to rule out allergies - Steps can be then taken to eliminate the trigger and treat the symptoms 2 If she is indeed suffering from common colds, there is no need to rush to the vet each time if it is only a matter of a slight runny nose or other minor issue 3 Bring her to the veterinarian if she is not better in 3 days or shows severe symptoms - she may need antibiotics PetPugDog. Runny noses and sneezes abound for us humans, as new plants bloom in the fall. But did you know that your dog can have a runny nose too? Dog runny noses are more correctly called nasal discharge. It can run the gamut from clear and watery to thick and purulent. The appearance and frequency of nasal discharge in dogs can tell you much about the underlying cause. Could My Dog Have Allergies? In Short, Yes. A thin, watery discharge without color or odor is likely a sign of mild irritation in the nasal cavities. This can occur with seasonal allergies or other causes of inflammation within the nose such as an inhaled foreign object grass and seeds. In some cases, antihistamines will clear up the discharge without further incident. Dogs do sometimes respond to environmental allergens just as humans do—with red, watery eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose. More Serious Causes of Dog Runny Noses In cases where the discharge is thick, has odor, or discoloration with blood or pus, more serious causes are suspected. Any exposure to dogs otherwise? If both nostrils are involved, the causes are frequently different than if only one nostril. Both nostrils points to a more generalized cause while one nostril points to a localized source. If the discharge is clear, thin, and watery, your veterinarian may try antihistamines and monitoring at home for any other signs. If none develop, and your dog seems otherwise healthy, it may be normal for a small amount of discharge to occur. No further treatment may be needed. If the discharge continues or worsens, then more diagnostics are needed. In the case of unilateral discharge one nostril involved , the causes could include an inhaled foreign body such as grass or grass awns leading to rhinitis, a fungal infection, or a nasal tumor. Your veterinarian will likely try a course of antibiotics. If no response occurs, then the next step is generally a rhinoscopy. In this procedure, your dog will be anesthetized, a camera will be inserted into the nostril to look at the area, and samples will be taken for culture and biopsy. In some cases, a CT scan of the head is needed to make a definitive diagnosis. If both nostrils are involved, this points to a more generalized problem such as a viral or bacterial infection. Dogs are prone to both especially if they board at a kennel, visit the dog park, or go to grooming facilities. Canine influenza is becoming more common in the dog population. In this case, concurrent with the runny nose would be a fever, sneezing and coughing, lethargy, and often lack of appetite. Pneumonia is a possible side effect. Canine kennel cough , a common bacterial complex, can also cause a nasal discharge. This generally occurs when the disease progresses to pneumonia. Summary In the case of a dog with no other symptoms and some clear nasal discharge, a runny nose is not cause for immediate concern. It is when your pet develops other symptoms such as red, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, fever, lack of appetite, or lethargy that a trip to the veterinarian is warranted.

When Hawk joined our family, at 8 weeks of age, he would retrieve paint rollers nonstop. This progressed through retrieving bumpers and joining our field training group when he was 4 months old. It quickly became apparent that he not only enjoyed retrieving, but he was also a phenomenal marker. He ran his only hunt test at 6 months of age, and passed the test. We continued to train hard and Jammed our first Derby at 11 months and followed that with a 2nd place in his second Derby at 12 months. Hawk displays the classic Golden personality and has never met a dog or person he didn't like. Since their Mother's name is Topbrass High Adventure and their father has earned such high accomplishments at such a young age, we felt it was fitting to look to aim HIGH in our litter theme and we hope that this quote fits this litter in the years ahead, "high achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation" as they seek to write their own unique stories. Generals and Admirals of the U. Please note what we call your puppy for the first 8 weeks has NO bearing whatsoever on your puppy's forever call name - that is you and your family's decision. We hope you enjoy the many puppy pictures to come, as well as, our color naming creatively behind this most anticipated litter, as much as, we do! We have started a wait list and are currently taking deposits. Our puppies also come with a few of our favorite training tools and toys! For additional information please contact Haley Glick at .Essentially a failure of the lysosome system that recycles amino acids, or proteins, in cells, NCL occurs in Golden Retrievers due to a mutation in the CLN5 gene. This results in the accumulation of ceroid lipofuscin — an unusual material that glows fluorescent yellow when examined under a microscope — in the brain, retina and other tissues. Affected dogs develop normally until the storage material builds up and interferes with functioning. Golden Retrievers typically show signs around 1 to 2 years of age. This autosomal recessive condition occurs when the sire and dam are carriers and produce a litter in which an average of 25 percent of puppies are affected. He reached out to the owners of puppies he bred that were potentially affected. More than dogs were tested quickly when the news came out. Mertens learned about NCL carriers weaving through the Topbrass bloodline. The Outstanding Sire and second all-time top Golden Retriever derby dog has many desirable working traits. It is pure luck that the bitches that have been bred to him were all clear of the NCL genetic defect. The mutation is found in several other field lines, as well as in the pedigrees of show-bred Golden Retrievers. In most breeds, except Tibetan Terriers, Border Collies and American Bulldogs, it appears to be a rare disease, though it is likely that many cases of neurological disease in dogs are not recognized as potential NCLs NCLs also occur in people and include the fatal Batten disease that affects children. Symptoms of NCLs in people include visual impairment, declining cognitive and motor functions, seizures, brain atrophy, and early death. Among animal species, NCLs are most frequently reported in dogs, though one or more cases have been reported in cats, sheep, cattle, ducks, ferrets, goats, horses, monkeys, parrots, and pigs. It began in the summer of when a breeder submitted 18 DNA samples of three generations of a Golden Retriever family after producing two litters of nine puppies from the same healthy parents, in which four dogs from the first litter showed signs of a progressive neurological disease. The published study in which the disease-causing mutation was reported appeared in the June-July issue of Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. Katz says. Anxiety, constant circling, tremors, aggression, ataxia incoordination , seizures, and visual impairment were among the abnormalities that became apparent at 15 months of age or older. Katz explains. Two of the affected littermates from the three-generation family became progressively worse until they were euthanized at 30 to 31 months of age due to the severity of their disease. Two additional dogs from the same litter had similar progressive neurological signs. Postmortem evaluation of the brain and retinal tissues confirmed that the disorder was a form of NCL. In this case, two of those DNA molecules are knocked out, causing a frameshift to the left and premature termination codon. As a result, when the two DNA molecules are deleted, the amino acid sequence is altered and the protein does not function as it should. The fragments of protein then build up in the lysosome, which is where the name lysosomal storage disease comes. Over time, either the buildup of the degraded protein or the lack of the recycled amino acids interferes within the function of the cells and progressive disease results. As the disease progresses, so does the severity of clinical signs. This is what happened to Lexi. Her condition became progressively worse until she was euthanized in November .Her littermate sister, Gracie, also was euthanized. Although NCL is a challenging disease for an owner or breeder to face, with the discovery of the gene mutation and development of the NCL genetic test for Golden Retrievers, selective breeding can ensure affected dogs are not produced. Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. Progressive Signs of NCL in Golden Retrievers 15 Months of Age: Early neurological signs include loss of coordination causing dogs to bump into objects, difficulty climbing stairs, anxiety, agitation, and long periods of constant pacing and circling. Affected dogs may lose the ability to recognize or respond to previously learned commands and behaviors, have mild seizure-like activity, such as fly biting, or snapping at flies that are not there, and gum smacking. Visual impairment in bright and dim light becomes profound. In later stages, affected dogs may become aggressive toward people. Having a recessive inheritance pattern, NCL occurs in dogs in which both the sire and dam are asymptomatic carriers. A carrier-to-carrier breeding produces progeny in which, on average, 25 percent are affected, 50 percent are carriers, and 25 percent are clear. The majority, 3,, were found to be clear. There were carriers, and 27 dogs were affected. This makes it very important to know the genetic status of dogs being bred so two carriers are not bred to each other, creating a risk for affected puppies. Hunters looking for an intelligent, shorter-coated retriever that will hunt from dark to dark need to research field-bred goldens. By Tony J. Peterson With a charming, eager-to-please personality and looks to match, the golden retriever has plenty to offer. Yet its skyrocketing popularity is the reason golden retrievers have become victims of their own demand. It's also why those in search of a hard-working golden need to be very careful when choosing a pup for hunting purposes. Advertisement A Rich History Among the many reasons for the golden retriever's popularity is the rich history of the breed, which, according to the American Kennel Club, dates back to the early s. Europe is responsible for a good number of our current sporting breeds including goldens, which came into being in England and Scotland well over years ago. During that time, a medium-sized sporting breed was an asset for obtaining food both in the waterfowl and upland gamebird worlds. Throughout the s the breed became even more desirable, and in it was recognized by the AKC. Goldens soon became one of the go-to breeds for many hunters and folks looking to run a dog in an obedience or field trial. They also started showing up in television shows, as well as print and television advertisements, and one needs only look at a single golden to understand why. Very few breeds are as photogenic or as easy to work with as goldens, which contributed further to their popularity. This also led to division in the breed, with an ever-increasing portion of the litters born each year to less stringent standards. Show dogs with their long flowing coats became much more common and they were bred to field-bred dogs as well as other show dogs. Advertisement It has been a couple of decades since the breed hit its high-water mark and since then we've witnessed a decline in the health and hunting-drive of the breed overall. That's not to say that excellent pedigrees don't exist, because they do. They just aren't as easy to locate as a run-of-the-mill, mystery-bred golden. If there is one person that understands this more than most, it's Jackie Mertens. Mertens has owned and operated Topbrass Retrievers since and is undoubtedly one of the most respected names in the world of golden retrievers. Every once in a while, I get to meet someone who was put on this earth to work with dogs, and Mertens fits that category. From her schoolgirl days, Mertens knew she'd work with animals, and as soon as she could she got her first golden. That dog, Ch. Mertens recalls, however, that she almost lost Torch before it all started. Advertisement "Torch had a lot of desire, she was fearless, and she was a good producer — and she did it all on three legs after getting caught in a fox trap," Mertens recalls. She had survived by eating snow and pawing up any plants she could reach. Since then, Mertens has been at the forefront of field-bred goldens, and when someone wants a great housedog, a great hunter — or both — they go to her. And it's all about the breeding. Hunters looking for a waterfowl and upland dog will often steer toward Labs for obvious reasons, but the right golden will fill the role just fine. A field-bred golden with a proper water introduction will bring ducks to hand all day long. They look a bit different and they will exhibit the right drive and retrieving desire. Now, I hear people say all of the time that their dog was the best ever, but they are comparing it to maybe a few other dogs they've owned. To have the best chance of getting a truly good hunting dog, it's field-bred or nothing. There are so many issues that can come up with poor breeding, that it's a process to ensure a healthy litter these days. For us that means looking at all health clearances like hips and elbows, of course, but other things. We use a canine ophthalmologist for eye clearances, a canine cardiologist for heart clearances, and also conduct a litany of DNA tests to ensure proper breeding. Having gone through the heartbreak of losing a golden to kidney failure when she was only six years old, I am particularly sensitive to proper health clearances. All breeds can suffer unfortunate medical issues, but goldens are exceptionally prone to them given the amount of unchecked breeding. Another golden retriever expert I asked to weigh in on this issue is Theresa Bilava, who operates Platte River Retrievers with her son Nick. She started with goldens as a child and has been raising and breeding them for 22 years. Having over two decades of experience devoted to the breed has given Bilava a unique perspective on the current state of the golden retriever, and she was more than willing to offer advice to anyone looking for a pup. Like Mertens, Bilava makes sure all of her Platte River dogs are health checked in all manners. Now people think they can pick up any golden puppy and it will hunt, but that's not the case. With us, we're breeding for athletes, not models. Our dogs are field-bred, and quite frankly, a lot of the people that contact me about getting a dog don't even know what a field-bred dog is. We want dogs that want to play the game and that will have the right temperament. All of our dogs will be companion dogs, and some will be used for agility or therapy, but many of them end up being upland and waterfowl hunters as well. As long as they are well-bred they'll become people-pleasers that will take to training and look to make you happy. A good sign of a dog that is working for you not for itself is if the dog checks back often and looks you in the eye. Goldens are well known for this trait, especially in the field where it matters most. They aren't wired the same as a Lab that might be able to run the same drill times in a row. They are different, and have to be trained differently. When I asked him why he chose to hunt with goldens he responded by saying, "The golden is a gentleman's dog. He will give you percent if you are fair to him. And he can turn it on and turn it off, which is something other breeds struggle with. When a good golden is asked to hunt, he'll give you his all. When the hunt is over, he'll transition back into that lovable housedog. They need to be introduced to water properly, and if you do it wrong it's like pushing a rope — it doesn't work. Goldens will work for you, but if you lose your cool they'll shut down. It has to be fun for them, and you've got to work with their intelligence by keeping it interesting and positive. They respond to teaching, not pressure. Finding a well-bred golden puppy that has all of its health clearances and is a true hunting dog is a different story. The right pedigree takes time to locate, and it will cost more than a run-of-the-mill dog. The upside? You'll get an amazing hunting and family dog. Nick Bilava has spent plenty of time hunting South Dakota roosters for himself and for clients while he was guiding, but his dogs can do much more than hunt ringnecks. They can hunt anything and handle any new hunting situation provided you've got them prepared. I hunt doves with my dogs, ducks, everything. They can do it all, and will, if you ask them with respect. When my pheasant opportunities disappeared with the loss of habitat, we switched gears to ruffed grouse, doves and eventually ducks. And just for fun, I threw in shed antler hunting to see how she'd do. As long as my golden got to retrieve something for me and earn a little praise, everything was just fine. This willingness to please is without question one of the greatest reasons to own this breed. Nick Bilava got into golden retrievers in no small part because his mother, Theresa, has been breeding field-bred goldens for years. Together they operate Platte River Retrievers, where they focus on producing a few litters each year that are bred to be smart, athletic and will hunt everything they are asked to hunt. For the hunter looking to have a rock star in the field and a good-looking house pet all in one dog, they are the ideal choice provided they come from a breeding program that has focused on health concerns and strong hunting instincts. Picking A Golden Puppy When shopping for that perfect golden pup, here are some things that prospective owners should be mindful of. That's the going rate, and it is worth it for the peace of mind you'll have from getting a truly high-quality, healthy pup. Your job doesn't end with research and writing a check, however. Trust Your Breeder After that, it's a matter of being honest with your breeder and allowing him or her to pick the right dog for you. Jackie Mertens stressed this by saying, "I don't let people pick their puppy. I pick it for them. Some people don't like this, but I've already spent seven weeks with the puppies and have watched how they act, and interact, so I know their personalities well. Too many people want to pick their own puppy, and they often take the first dog to run up to them but that is often a bad deal because that puppy might be the most dominant in the litter. It's better to put your faith in the pedigree and the breeder to match you up with the best bet out of a litter. You won't regret it. More Articles From How-To.

how much german shepherd puppies in philippines - Andorra and Spain Ah, well, spaniels are a completely different kettle of fish to Labs. I don't think you can compare them at all. Working-bred spaniels are usually from the ones I've met busy little bees and never seem to stop moving. As I said, my two have lots of field trial champions in their pedigree. Their parents worked in the field their owner was a gamekeeper. So they have both "bred to compete" and "bred to work". I've heard lots of people say that field-bred Labs are high energy and less suitable as pets, but I haven't seen any evidence of this at all. I'm sure there are some where it holds true, but it would be the exception, not the rule, and so the generalisation, I would say, is flawed. Although maybe they have different temperament characteristics in Canada. What I would say, from my experience, is that field-bred Labs can be more jittery and nervy than show-bred Labs. That is another huge generalisation, of course, but one that, in the dogs I've seen, has been far more accurate than them having higher energy. This is down to either taking less interest in those elements of temperament when it comes to breeding, or specifically breeding for it, if it leads to a dog who will work more effectively because of it. I see this in Shadow; he's a nervous boy, but his nervous energy makes him extremely switched on for training purposes. Of course, in the context of this thread, all of this is meaningless as, just because a puppy takes physical traits from one parent, it doesn't mean that it will take the temperament of that parent. You may get all of one, all of the other or, more likely, a mix of the two. Could be a mix of all the best bits, a mix of all the worst bits, but probably somewhere in the middle. That's why it's important to try to find a litter where you like both the parents for what they are. Back to the question, how to choose the puppy that will grow up to have the better head? It depends on what age you're going to be making that choice. The later, the better chance you have. If you get a chance to hold all the puppies, you might be able to feel differences in the bone structure; the thickness of the leg bones between my field and show bred Labs is quite remarkable; even when Luna was a young pup, her lower leg bones were far thicker than Willow and Shadow's. Even so, I think much of it is a case of luck. An outcross like this is unpredictable, and you could have a huge range of physical characteristics in the pups, or they could all be much of a muchness. If it's hugely important to you to have a puppy that will grow up into a dog with thicker bones, I'd look for a litter that comes from parents who are pretty much guaranteed to give you this. Also, be aware that bitches tend to be finer featured than dogs, anyway, so a female version of an equivalent male would have a slightly narrower head. They teach them how to play, how to clean themselves, and how to behave. A litter of puppies who recently faced the wrath of their mother has gone viral on TikTok in a video posted by 6. It has been viewed over 1. In the video, six chubby chocolate Labrador retrievers can be seen cowering in the kitchen after being told off by their mother. You're scared of mom right now? Stock image of a litter of chocolate Labrador puppies. Puppies have been filmed cowering in a kitchen after being told off by their mom. Mother dogs have very strong maternal instincts and will give their undivided love and attention to their litter. By roughly their fourth week, the transition from milk to solids takes place, known as weaning , and the mother will begin to slowly distance herself from her pooches, and start disciplining them as they become more adventurous and begin to test boundaries. Most dogs will make it clear when their puppies have pushed it too far, possibly by simply moving away or issuing them with a snarl or growl, or possibly a bark. Reasons for rehoming early At 5 weeks old your puppy still far too immature, physically and psychologically, to leave their mother. Your six week old puppy is weaned, but they still have many doggy lessons to learn from both their mother and their littermates. Like so many aspects of puppy health and welfare, much hinges on whether or not you have found a good, responsible breeder. But those additional two weeks allow the breeder to complete the weaning process and make sure that the puppy is properly settled on solid food. From 6 — 8 weeks pups also still need to learn some important life lessons from their moms and littermates. There are legal requirements governing the sale of puppies in some 25 states in the USA. Most of these laws stipulate that puppies should be over 8 weeks old when they go to their permanent homes. In the UK, law related to puppy breeding, and the age at which they may be sold, was passed in .So what is the purpose of this legislation and why is 8 weeks so important? Why do kennel clubs recommend puppies are not re-homed before 8 weeks? Puppies just start finding their feet and moving around at around four weeks. The mother starts spending less time with them to help them become more independent. Their digestive systems are still immature and they need time to adjust to the solid food. And be protected from stress. With younger puppies, three or four weeks old, the situation is even more serious — and your puppy may die. We get many sad letters here from people that have bought puppies this young and whose puppies are very sick. This is where the lessons not to bite hard start. There are two issues here that need separating. Six weeks is a popular age for many people to want to bring home their Lab puppy. And breeders who sell very young puppies will often explain, quite truthfully, that their six week old puppy is already weaned. But in much of Europe, Australia and North America, most pedigree puppies are not sold until they are around 8 or even 9 weeks old. A few breeders may want puppies to be even older than this. Physically puppies can and do leave their mothers this young, and even younger, though not all such very young puppies will survive. Are they even weaned yet? If your breeder tells you your puppy is already weaned at six weeks old, they are almost certainly telling the truth. The six week old pup still has a very immature digestion and is vulnerable to stomach upsets. More reasons not to rehome pups at 6 weeks But there are other, very important, reasons to leave puppies with their mother for a couple more weeks. And with their brothers and sisters. Most of these have to do with their social and psychological development. This is when the mother teaches her pups most of their doggy manners. From 6 — 8 weeks puppies also really start playing with their littermates — and boisterously. They nip, bump and even roll each other over while they play. All puppies bite. This is a normal part of puppy play. But puppies have to learn how hard they can bite in fun, without actually harming anyone. And one of the most important ways that puppies learn not to bite is from their littermates. This is when puppy play gets rougher and tougher and the puppies teach one another not to bite too hard. During this time puppies also develop a sense of themselves and their bodies as separate from others. Furthermore, much like year old human toddlers, pups from weeks start testing the limits of their own independence. Behavior problems in puppies separated from their mothers too early A study published in compared reported behavioral problems in dogs rehomed at weeks, with those who went to their new homes at 8 weeks. The dogs who were separated from their litters early showed far more of the following behavior problems destructiveness.
