Everything from their size, hypoallergenic potential, color, weight and demeanor can vary, but they always retain some characteristics from each parent. For example, a dog might inherit the curious, energetic nature from the poodle or be more stubborn and calm like the Bernedoodle parent. Smart, goofy and dedicated are just a few words that Bernedoodle owners regularly use to describe their beloved pets. Bernedoodle Designer Breed History Unlike many dogs on the designer breed registry, Bernedoodles have a well-known history. Originally developed by Bernedoodle breeder Sherry Rupke at SwissRidge Kennels, the first litter of two was born in .In addition to poodles and Bernese mountain parent dogs of various sizes, Rupke has added the Australian Labradoodle to her lines, resulting in the Australian Bernedoodle. Training Your Bernadoodle Young Bernadoodles tend to inherit the stubbornness characteristic of both their poodle and Bernese mountain dog parents. So, you could end up with a light-ish build dog who needs a lot of exercise and training, or you could end up with a heavier dog whose body and brain is more that of a friendly couch potato! Even an active Bernedoodle may not mature for quite some time, so short periods of exercise several times a day are far better so as not to permanently damage growing bones and joints. However, this does not mean he is a pushover to train. Unlike the Golden retriever and Labrador, the Bernese Mountain Dog does not have a long history of therapy and service dog work. Despite being steady-tempered, he can be a bit stubborn when it comes to training and prefers to do things on his own timetable. One of the strongest qualities of the Berner is his affection. He may very well think his pound body can fit perfectly in your lap. He will want to accompany his owners as much as possible and his loyalty is simply unmatched. The other half of the Bernedoodle is of course the well-known Poodle. In fact, the sporting clip method of trimming the coat was originally used to facilitate swimming. So Standard Poodles are actually quite athletic, moderately active and extremely intelligent. Retrieving is a skill that requires dutiful obedience on the part of the dog, and the standard poodle is no exception. Poodles often excel in obedience competitions and agility exercises. They are also incredibly people-oriented and sensitive. This means they are often easy to train, but also that they require a lot of affection to be at their happiest and reach their full potential. In other words, Poodles are not the type of dog that will be content alone in the backyard all day! The Poodle lends its non-shedding coat and better health to the Bernese Mountain Dog to create a lower-shedding, longer-living, but just as loving of a companion as the purebred Berner. Still, the Bernedoodle may be more difficult to train than other types of doodles such as the goldendoodle. The Bernedoodle will need daily exercise to keep from turning his playful goofiness into a darker humor of chewing up your furniture or other bad habits. Let's talk about our sweet boy Henry.Let's keep this momentum going!!! If you don't know Henry's story, Let's talk about him. He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. Kat Wednesday 23rd of November I put a comment up here a couple of weeks ago and it was deleted. I said in it that this was the best combination I have ever had. I love how snugly they are but they are just as ready to play, go hiking, and walks are the best for them. They are a great combination. However, as with all breeds health testing is a huge factor. Each breed contains issues. Having health testing is extremely important. All dogs can have issues. My older lab is 13 and having issues with his back legs because he was slammed into injuring his back and knees by our young "purebred" St. Bernard who ended up passing at 4 due to cancer and had juvenile arthritis. Our Baby Girl the labs sister was born with bad front legs and with treatment and lots of love lasted until .A family member has a 10 year old "purebred" Pom who has horrible knees that was cheaply purchased from a breeder. Or my neighbor who picked up 2 Great Danes. One for free because the "purebred" breeder bred a double merle gene and caused him to be born without eyes and with many health problems. It has cost over 10k to keep him alive and he's now 6 years old and relatively healthy. It's important for people to understand that whether it's a "purebred" or "mixed" dog it's important to ensure the dog or the dog's parents are health tested. Stop promoting cheap puppy mill prices because those are the dogs that end up dead young costing the families thousands. If you are looking for a dog save up for the initial purchase and do your due diligence and research the health and cost. Depends on what we want at the time. Kat Tuesday 15th of November I absolutely love this combination and currently have 3 of them. They are so snuggly when it's time to rest. However, because they have longer noses and better breathing they are fast. My older male gives our Australian Shepherd mix a run for his money. Our others are just as fast. They get the major zoomies leaving us gasping for breath through the laughter. When we sit down they are right there for snuggle time. However, I do not agree with their price listing. They are healthy, active, smart, and well balanced. Some of the best dogs we've ever had. I highly recommend this breed and hope someday that this can be a breed in and of itself and no longer considered a "designer" dog. I do hope they can come up with a better name for the breed rather than French Bullhuahua. It just sounds designer.
