Well when I came to a stop I found out why, she managed to chew the seat belts right in half! Oh well no one rides in the back of a pick up truck anyways, right? We found that Abby loved water and to swim, like most labs. We couldn't keep her out of the lake when we went to the park. She would swim with the geese or a passing row boat or kayak. She was also a lover of the snow. Her favorite winter game was catching snowballs. She loved going with us to our friends hunting cabin. She would stay with us while we enjoyed target practice with our shotguns. In true lab form, Abby would just lay there chewing a stick and not flinch at the sound. We were preparing for a trip to the hunting cabin and decided to get Abby "cleaned up". This meant a bath and brushing her teeth. Bath was done and now to the tooth brush with her beef flavored paste which she loved! Upon opening her mouth we saw a swollen spot that looked like a strawberry. That strawberry turned out to be cancer. The word no one ever wants to hear. The world stopped! A million thoughts rushing through our minds. How could this be? We brush her teeth once a week and never saw anything. She's only 7 and there is so much more we want to do with her. Yes surgery can remove this cancer known as Squamacous Cell Carcinoma. Off to the specialist who tells us it has been caught in the early stages and surgery should remove it. So they remove all of Abby's front teeth, her canine on the right and part of her palate. She can chew, eat and looks the same. Some dogs have a deformed muzzle after surgery, but Abby's is only slightly noticeable. She actually has a smile like Elvis now, just a little crooked. Life is now good. More trips to the lake where she swims with her friends and to the hunting cabin and chewing on tree branches. So we sell our house and pack up the car and the three of us drive 4 days across the country to start a new adventure. Abby is the best passenger in the car. Never a peep out of her, she either sleeps in the back of our Jeep or hangs her head out the window. Abby hates the Vegas summers. Hot for a large English lab that wants to romp in the snow. But we have a pool that she enjoys. It's difficult for her as she is getting older at age .So lets keep her young and get her a sister! Yea that's it!! Along came her sister, Bella that we rescued from a Vegas shelter. At four months old Bella, a Pit Bull mix fell in love with Abby. She depended on Abby to show her the ropes. We also noticed Abby enjoyed showing Bella the way. Two years later along came Jet our third baby. Jet came to us from Las Vegas Labrador Rescue and she was full of energy and life at 18 months. Our pack is now complete. Even though Abby had her sisters in Vegas, she still missed her doggy friends in Ohio. She would even send pictures to them when their health turned. Her favorite doggy friend in Ohio was Gunther or G-Boy. They were best buddies. Tests showed no infection, but Abby was in some distress when trying to urinate or she just couldn't urinate. More tests, blood work, x-rays then more x-rays. By the end of December she was going to the vet every day for a catheter to empty her bladder. Some days she stayed all day others we would pick her up after a few hours. Blood in her urine now. This isn't good.After 2 months of testing and catheters the radiologists finds IT. .It is a cancer they can't remove. The world falls away again, can't hear anything. Why is this happening?! We slow her catheter treatments to only a few a week to ensure her comfort. We can tell when she has to go back to have her treatment. For the most part she's a happy girl. She does sleep a lot but she's 13, right? She's eating and will still take off your finger for a treat, so that's good. March 22, , Abby's 14th birthday. What a party! She ate all of it and we didn't care. We just saw a smile in her eye and that's all we needed to see. Just 2 weeks later we lost her. It was the most difficult day I can remember. It was hard letting her go over the rainbow bridge, but she was so tired. She spoke to us softly the night before and told us it was time. She had given us all of the love any dog could. She really wasn't a dog, she was so much more. So we lost our beloved Abby and it left such a hole in our lives, our other dogs lives, our friends and even our vet's office. People still talk about Abby and how they loved her and what a great dog she was. We have used her paw print still holding our heart. Rest in Peace Little Girl.Her eye is healing well from the lipoma removal on Monday. She has left it alone mostly, so no cone needed. She snores with the best of them!!! We have gone out several times now and left Abby and our 2 resident dogs all free roaming and there was zero issues. They all get along great and are completely trustworthy together while alone. Oops…oh well thankfully FM had more and she put it in a more secure place. I was pretty close to getting some bacon. .Foster Dad also caught me running from the kitchen into the family room with a bag of doggie treats hanging from my mouth. Foster Dad said that was really funny…even as he chased me to get them back!! I happily spent the entire morning in there and then went back in there all evening, even though everyone was in the other room watching tv. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to eat it, but when I did BOY was that good!!!! Love Abby Hi All…. I just wanted to tell you what an incredible girl our sweet Abby is. She is honestly the easiest foster except for the counter surfing…that really keeps us on our toes!! She soaks up the love and attention and is so very happy to just chill near you. She takes correction very well when told no. She is eating quite well and drinking normally. So far there have been no problems between Abby and our 2 resident dogs, which is great. Abby is such a sweetheart and is so very calm and laid back. She takes treats very gently. We have allowed her free roam and she just goes about and finds a place to lay and rest. When that time comes…. In all honesty…. .Even someone who is home part days would be fine as Abby seems happy to snooze part of her day away. I think this will really help her coat with the shedding as well as the bit of dryness. We are already starting the switch over to much better dog food that will greatly improve her coat and skin, too. My only real concern if you can call it that? I met a nice lady whose car I was put in and off we went again. I was super calm and just laid with my head on the armrest. Then after a while we stopped and met 2 new people…. Not sure what that means. When we got to their house, I went for a short walk in the rain and met 2 dogs who live there. Then we went out back in the fenced yard and got to meet a little further. That went pretty good and none of us were overly interested in each other. When I finally got to go inside this new house I was exploring on my own and resident dog Emma came in and got a little too close to my face while I was still nervous and not sure what was going on so I gave a bit of a warning growl. Silly girl growled right back at me…. .Well, foster Mom kinda spoke sternly to Emma and told her to give me room, which she did right away and after that we were ok with each other. I am now comfortable enough sit beside them and get all the pets and love that I can. My coat has that several different layers look to it and you can just pull clumps of my fur off if you want. I need to get ready for the upcoming summer, but foster mom says her vacuum may get a run for its money…. .I am also VERY interested in the counter tops and all the good smells and things that may be up there. I met my foster brother Josh, who I learned I get to sleep in his room with him!! I have my very own bed in there and I slept the entire night comfortably on that bed. I did get up and kinda sniff around a time or time just to remember where I was but otherwise it was a good nights sleep. We all got up around or and I was ok with that. If you look close you can see the lighter color under her eyes is the same color she cleared out to. The ears seem to hold the black coloring. On the puppy picture you can see the dark tipped ear and in the adult Bernedoodle picture you can see the tips of the ears are still black. This puppy is another puppy from one of our non-fading poodles. You can see with age he is the same color as he was when he was a puppy. The picture below is a sable Bernedoodle at 8 weeks, 6 months, and over 2 years. If you look at the 8 week picture you can see that her true color is the brownish red color. You can see the brownish color under her eyes. Again the ears are tipped black and stayed black but her over all color cleared out to the color around her eyes as a young puppy. How does the sable Bernedoodle coat change? Sable Bernedoodles are born dark or even looking black. By the time they are a few days old we can tell if they are sable. The first signs of a sable bernedoodle are highlights by the ears, eyes, muzzle, and underneath the tail. When sable bernedoodles are 6 weeks old you can tell what color they will clear out to buy looking at the color under their eyes. Sable Bernedoodles will usually have a lighter brown, cream, or red coloring under and around the eyes. This is the color your sable Bernedoodle will most likely clear out to. Clearing out is different than fading. With fading we do not know what color the puppy will end up being. With clearing out the dog shows what color it will end up being around 6 weeks of age. Brindle Bernedoodle Color changes Sable Bernedoodle clearing-fading Brindle Bernedoodles seem to hold their color whether or not the poodle parent carries the fading gene. Because the Bernedoodle has poodle in them they do have a tendency to fade. The fading comes from the poodle parent. Some Bernedoodles start out as black and turn silver. Some Bernedoodles start out looking black and turn cream. Your dogs genetics determine if your puppy will fade. There is not a test available to determine if your dog carries the fading gene. The only way to reduce fading in the Bernedoodle is to know the lineage and chose breeding dogs that have not faded and come from long lines of non-fading poodles. Even with that there is a chance your puppy could change colors with age. The lighter the rust is as a puppy the lighter the rust will be as an adult if your Bernedoodle has the fading gene. It has been interesting to watch the past eight years how the tricolor Bernedoodle color changes. One thing I am finding is that hair type can have an affect on whether or not they fade at an early age. Bernedoodles with a straighter coat seem to hold their color better than Bernedoodles with a curly coat regardless if the poodle parent carries the fading gene. Tricolor Bernedodoles with a poodle parent that faded to silver where their rust used to be seem to start fading as young as 10 weeks. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a phantom poodle parent seem to start fading a bit later around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a sable poodle parent seem to start fading around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a poodle parent that has not faded seem to hold their color. Because all of our puppies from our poodle parents that do not seem to carry the fading gene are under 2 years old we do not know what age they will start fading or if they will hold their color until they turn grey from old age. Do Bernedoodles Fade? The merle Bernedoodle coat is a newer coat color. Our Merle Bernedoodles are to young to know how their color will be as adults. So far what we are seeing is that the merle coat is actually turning a darker shade of grey. You can see with age his rust lightened up to a tan color and his coat came in wavy. Sable Bernedoodle Colors This tricolor phantom Bernedoodle puppy below is from out phantom male Trip. He over 2 years old and is the same color as when he was 8 weeks old. You can see that his rust is very similar to that of a pure Bernese mountain dog. He has a straighter coat. Tricolor Bernedoodle fading. Despite the fact that they go through a number of stages of growth and development, we tend to consider dogs either puppies or adults. So what are the stages of puppy growth and development? Depending on what methodology you want to follow, there are anywhere from 5 to 7 stages of puppyhood that start at birth and end when your dog reaches adulthood. This is called the imprinting, or critical learning period. For puppies, the imprinting period is during the first 16 weeks of life. Puppies learn more during this time than they can learn in a life time. In fact, such vast change in development happens with each day that passes, the Imprinting Period is further sub-divided into multiple distinct puppy-stages. Learning is already rapidly occurring, making it important that human caretakers provide puppies with specific neurological stimulation, a complex environment, and careful, yet thorough, socialization for proper development and adjustment to living in human society. During this time, there are also very critical lessons that the puppies must learn from their dog moms and siblings. Therefore, puppies should not be removed from their original homes before 7 weeks of age. As soon as your puppy comes home, time is of the essence for you to provide a huge heaping of high quality socialization and schooling. This is the key to creating a socially self-confident, well-behaved puppy that is strongly bonded to you. Fear-Impact Period: During the 2nd Socialization Period, when your puppy is around weeks of age, it is important to be aware of what is known as a Fear-Impact Period. So, protect your puppy from these long-term effects by avoiding bad experiences. That is good parenting! This will typically occur between months of age, but sometimes lasts longer. This is similar to the First Fear-Impact Period. If it does not occur at this time, it will occur later during the Adolescent Period. This is usually a difficult time for many puppy parents, but can be a mess for those with puppies that missed early establishment of boundaries, socialization and training. Introducing Your Current Dog to a New Bernedoodle If you already have a dog or dogs and are introducing a new Bernedoodle puppy or adult, you should do so slowly and carefully. Even if your dog loves other dogs, remember that it can be quite a different thing to have another dog come live in their home. For this reason, it is a good idea to have the initial meeting in a neutral location such as a park that your dog has never been to. Ideally, you will have a friend or family member that can help you. Each of you will take one of the dogs and go to the meeting spot alone. Try to bring the dogs together to greet each other. Do your best to keep the leash slack so that the dog does not feel it is being held back. At this point, there are many ways either dog might act. They might be excited to meet each other, which they will show by circling and sniffing. They might urinate near one another, circle each other, or even ignore the other. Let them do what they would like with as little interaction from you as possible. Keep the interaction brief. If at any point the dogs try to fight or otherwise become aggressive with each other, do not pull on their leashes. Instead, wave a treat above the nose of each to get them to separate. Let them calm down. Keep them near each other but not close enough to get at the other. Provide them with calm pets, lots of treats, and other comforting things. If all goes well, try heading out on a short walk together. If all the dogs still seem to like each other — or they seem indifferent — then you can take them home and see how they do. Keep them on leash initially so that you can quickly jump in if things get out of hand. Otherwise, allow them to explore together and get to know each other. Introducing Your Cat to Your New Bernedoodle If you are a cat household bringing in a Bernedoodle, you will have a few options depending on how dog-savvy your cat is and how cat-savvy your dog is. If neither animal is used to having the other around, you will want to start very slowly. When we brought our puppy home, we had two cats who had never met a dog. It took several months to introduce them fully. First, we ensured that the cats had somewhere to go that the puppy could not go. We did this by installing a puppy gate on our stairs that includes a cat door. This allowed our cats to go upstairs where their litter and food is, to get away from the dog. It allowed them to slowly make the trek downstairs to meet the puppy on their terms. I will admit that there was a period of time where my husband and I wondered if our cats would ever be brave enough to come downstairs or if we would have cats upstairs and a dog downstairs for the rest of our lives. Luckily, it happened just as we hoped — the cats eventually started coming downstairs, and they now love playing with our Bernedoodle. It just took a lot of time and patience. If you are getting a Bernedoodle that is used to cats, or you have cats that are used to dogs, then you do not have to go this slow. However, it is still wise to give the animals time to get used to each other before formally introducing them. Bring your Bernedoodle home and keep it confined to a room or two for the first day or two. Let your cats smell that the dog is in the house, and the dog smell the cats in the house. This gives both of them a chance to adjust to the other. Then try bringing the pup out on a leash. Allow the animals to approach each other. If they do so peacefully, you can drop the leash — but keep it on the dog at first so that you can quickly grab it if any of the animals get upset. Once your pets are used to each other, you should not assume that they will never have a kerfuffle. Just as human siblings will fight from time to time, your animals might too. The First Few Weeks of Being a Multi-Pet Household Whether you have introduced your Bernedoodle to another dog, another cat, or any other pet, the first few weeks are critical in the long-term success of a blended household. Walk them or play with them at the same time. In short, try to keep their life as similar to before as possible. Do not leave two dogs alone together until you are confident that they are entirely used to each other. Continue to give them lots of treats, praise, and attention when they communicate properly. If you notice dogs fighting over toys, growing, snapping, showing their teeth, or long stares, then it is time to separate the dog from the rest of the family until it can settle down. As time goes on, the pets should get used to being together and, hopefully, start to become the best of friends. Suppose this does not occur, and your current dog is aggressive toward your new Bernedoodle even after taking care with a slow introduction. Playdates Are the Best Way to Start Socializing with Other Dogs If you do not have another dog in the home and want to introduce your Bernedoodle to other dogs, it is wise to start with one-on-one playdates. If you have a friend or family member with a dog that loves other dogs, ask them to get together. Start at a neutral place, like a park. Keep both dogs on their leashes and allow them to sniff each other and greet each other. Unless they show signs of aggression, you should follow their lead and allow them to get to know each other however they feel comfortable. Once they seem to be comfortable with each other or indifferent to one another , take off for a short walk. The first time you introduce your Bernedoodle to another dog will likely be the most nerve-wracking because you will not know what to expect. Once you know that your dog likes other dogs, you can more quickly and easily introduce them to other dog-savvy dogs. Taking Your Bernedoodle to the Dog Park for the First Time The most important thing to know about taking your puppy or dog to the dog park for the first time is that it should not be the first time your pooch interacts with other dogs. Remember that the dog park is overwhelming to a dog. There are new smells, other dogs, new people, and new rules that your puppy or dog is not aware of. This is why we start by offering advice on socializing with other dogs and then move on to advice about the dog park. If you take your Bernedoodle to the dog park before they are ready, they can quickly become fearful of the park, and that can transfer to all their interactions with other dogs. If you have already introduced your dog to a few other dogs and they have done great, then you are ready to take your Bernedoodle to the dog park. If you have several options, start with a smaller dog park that gives your Bernedoodle a chance to explore but that you can easily keep them in your view. Before you hop in the car, consider this list of items that can make the experience a more positive one: Their leash. Yes, the dog park is leash-less, but you will need to get your dog from your house or vehicle to the park. Then take it with you into the dog park. If something goes wrong, you will want to be able to leash your Bernedoodle quickly. Depending on the particular area in which you leave, you will likely need to keep their city license, rabies tags, and any other required tags. The easiest way to do that is to keep their collar on. Bring poop bags. You will need to clean up after your dog in a dog park just as you would if you were walking your dog through your neighborhood. Bring treats. If you have to call your pooch to you, you want to be able to reward them. This is a good chance for advanced training because you can teach your dog to respond even when distractions abound. We recommend getting a treat pouch so that you will have treats quickly available when necessary. Only bring toys you are prepared to leave behind. If you bring a Frisbee, ball, or another toy for your pup to play with, you should be prepared to lose it. It might simply get lost, another dog might claim it as its own, or you could forget it. You should assume that your dog is going to get muddy and dirty at the park. Bring one or two towels to wipe down your dog, and then bring another one or two to cover your backseat during your drive home. Your Bernedoodle is going to run around, and they are going to get tired. Bring a bottle of water and a small bowl to give your Bernedoodle a quick refresh when they need it. Preparing for Bad Experiences at the Dog Park We have taken our two dogs to the dog park hundreds of times, and very rarely is there any problem at all. That said, they do happen, and it is crucial to be prepared. The goal is to prevent them from taking chase. You can offer treats, call their name, and squeak a toy you brought with you. You do not want to make negative noise — such as yelling at your dog — because this will not encourage them to come back to you. Dog fights. Well-socialized dogs can still get into fights with other dogs. It might be that one tackled the other too hard or that they were both going for the same toy. Whatever the cause, resist the urge to jump in the middle to break them up. Dog fights are dangerous, and you should avoid getting physically involved. Instead, call your dog to you. Even if they do not immediately stop and come to you, they know you are there. Then make a loud noise, such as clapping or whistling, to get the attention of both dogs. Alert others in the hopes that the owner of the other involved dog s can recall their own dog. Ideally, everyone at a dog park would be well-versed in dealing with dogs, but this is not always the case. For example, someone might run up to your dog and roughly pet them. This is not safe behavior. You do not have to aggressively confront the offending person, but you can politely tell them to please approach your dog slowly, to let your dog come to them, or to leave your dog alone.
