Lifespan Sociability The Bully Basset is a unique-looking dog, for sure. Owners should commit to daily exercise to keep him fit. The Basset Hound in him brings some undesirable habits like barking and digging to the mix that you must curb early. He also has a tendency to drool. These are all minor points when you consider how outwardly friendly this pooch is. He loves people, a trait the Bully Basset gets from both of his parent breeds. He is also a calmer dog without the overt intensity that marks some dogs. He is a devoted companion that makes an excellent family pet with all of his quirks. The Bully Basset gets a dose of stubbornness from both of his parent breeds. The Bulldog has that name for a reason—his unfortunate past in bullbaiting. The Basset Hound was an independent hunter that pursued game by scent. That accounts for some of his bad canine manners. The Basset Hound and Bloodhound share a common ancestor. The Basset and Bloodhound exceed as scent hunters. They have a sense of smell that takes them places. It turns out there is a good reason that they excel in this sport. Many speculate that the two breeds are descendants of the legendary canine of the hunt, the St. Hubert hounds of France. The Bulldog Club of England is the oldest of its type in the world. Part of the AKC recognition process is the formation of a breed club. The Bulldog has the oldest one ever formed, The Bulldog Club. The membership established it in .It has set the standard for these organizations ever since. The Bulldog has a presidential past. Not many breeds can boast the pedigree of past owners like the Bulldog. Among his following were three presidents, President Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and President Calvin Coolidge. He is reasonably intelligent and has a laid-back manner that many will find appealing. He is a dog that can go for the long haul, whether on a walk or romp at the doggie park. Early socialization is a must to preserve his friendly qualities. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, both parent breeds are kid-friendly. They are good-natured and patient, although they may get vocal when the excitement level rises if the children want to roughhouse with him. The other thing to bear in mind is the strong prey drive of the Basset. This scent hound hunted rabbits and other small game, historically. Researching the parent breeds is a must-do to ensure the beginning of a beautiful friendship. As with most pups, there are good and bad points. There are also things to watch for from a health perspective and with training. It is essential to feed him a diet formulated for medium-sized dogs. The caloric content is more in line with the metabolism of this pouch. We also suggest elevated food bowls , especially if he has the low-hanging ears of the Basset to keep them out of his water. Adjust the amount accordingly. We recommend keeping your pup on a lead at all times because of his high wanderlust potential. You can thank the Basset Hound in him for that trait. He is sometimes stubborn. He is relatively sensitive, making positive reinforcement the best plan of action with this pup. Treats are an excellent training aid and motivator if he needs a reason to stick with the program. Just make sure that the kids know that, too. Think of it as bonding time. The Basset Hound in him will need his ears checked and cleaned regularly. If your Bully Basset has the facial wrinkles of a Bulldog, they will also require attention to avoid skin issues. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals recommends several screenings for both. Minor Conditions. Bullet Description The Bully Basset is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Bulldog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. I could not ask for a better mixed breed; very loving and good with children and other animals. He is part English Bulldog part Basset Hound. He is amazing and very affectionate. He loves to swim, run and sleep. We get so many compliments how soft and perfectly marked he is. He is very, very spoiled and runs the house. He just turned two and we have loved every minute of it. I have all of the documentation that shows that his father was a purebred English Bulldog and his mother was a purebred Basset Hound. She is a Bully Basset! I have had many dogs in my life but she is definitely the most entertaining and sweetest! She is always discovering something new to interest her. She is 6 months old in this picture and had been playing all day. When she is ready to sleep she loves to nuzzle and cuddle. When I awake in the morning she nuzzles under my neck, turns with her belly in the air and gets kisses and massaged. She loves everyone. Waffles has long ears like a Basset and is stocky like a Bulldog. He is playful and loving, but does like to chew a bit. He is full grown now and just turned 2 years old. Waffles is about 40 lbs. He is by far the best dog I have ever owned. He is very quick to learn new things, and seems to pick up on everyday phrases fairly easy. Waffles has days where he can run around for hours, and others where he will do nothing but lie around and sleep. Waffles has never demonstrated any form of aggression toward other dogs , cats , children, or adults. I'm not sure where he got it, but Waffles can jump at least 4 feet high, which is odd, considering the breed mix. I have never had to teach Waffles to not chew on things that weren't his. He just always seems to know right from wrong. Waffles has never had any serious health issues. Although, like Basset Hounds, his ears do require regular cleaning. From the moment I got Waffles, he has been a complete joy and I cannot imagine a life without him. I couldn't dream of a better breed mix. Jackson has so much energy, but not very much stamina! He has even learned to open and close his doggy gate all by himself! Jackson, our Bully Basset at 2 months. Fawn, white, brown, black, pied Suitable for: Active families looking for a happy-go-lucky dog Temperament: Affectionate, friendly, independent, outgoing Each parent breed has their quirks. These are a small price to pay for the joy that this pup will bring into your life. Fortunately, the dog loves people and will do their best to please you. There are also health concerns that you need to know about. Our guide will tell you everything that you need to know about inviting a Bully Basset to your home and how to make it a delightful experience for everyone. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. They bring the friendliness of the Bulldog with the patience and loyalty of the Basset Hound. As cute as this pup is, they do bring two concerns to the table that you should consider. The Bulldog, with their short snout, is a brachycephalic breed. These physical features carry added health risks. The Basset Hound is independent to a fault. On the positive side, both breeds are genuinely sweet dogs that will make a welcome addition to your home. The Basset Hound also brings a tendency to drool, which some people may find unpleasant enough to be a deal-breaker. This pup is also quite vocal and seems happy to share their opinion about things. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are patient and calm, which makes them an excellent choice for families with children. The Bulldog is a sweetheart too, but we suggest supervised playtime. Both breeds are friendly and will welcome strangers if properly socialized as a puppy. Socialization is a vital concern with other pets in your household. Bear in mind that the Basset Hound is a hunting dog with a keen sense of smell. A home with small animals is probably not the best fit for a Bully Basset. We suggest closely monitoring time with other pets if just because of the strength and endurance of the two parent breeds. The degree of extra care depends on which one is dominant in certain traits. Knowing these things up front will help you make an informed decision about whether this pet is right for you. Both parent breeds are medium-sized. You should feed your pup food meant for dogs of this size and at the correct life stage. Puppy and adult diets differ in their nutritional content and calorie density. Offering the right one will ensure that your pet gets the nutrients they need. Both parent breeds have a tendency to gain weight. An overweight dog is at risk for other health conditions, particularly those associated with Bulldogs and Basset Hounds. A post shared by Jax jaxthebullybasset You can start your puppy on a feeding schedule of three to four small meals daily, depending on their age and size. You can transition to an adult schedule of two meals a day after your dog reaches 6 months. While the Bulldog is more laidback, the Basset Hound gets high marks for endurance. They are the dog that you want to take on long hikes, since they can keep up with the task. Daily walks are an essential part of raising a Bully Basset. These will keep your pet both physically and mentally fit. Because the Basset was a hunting dog, we recommend keeping your dog on a leash or in a fenced-in yard. Their wanderlust potential is quite high, as you may expect. They will require consistent training, although both parent breeds are intelligent enough to learn tricks and commands quickly. Of course, treats can make your job infinitely easier. You can keep it under control by running a hound glove over their coat a few times a week. Your dog will enjoy the extra attention. The concerns are primarily respiratory, with an increased risk of drowning. Neither parent breed is a water dog. We strongly urge you to buy from breeders who do the recommended pre-breeding health screenings. Since this dog is a hybrid, we suggest asking to see the parents if possible, to get a better idea of how big your puppy may get and a handle on their personality. Minor Conditions. Instead, encourage acceptable chewing by providing proper chew toys for your furry friend to enjoy. As such, you should learn how to stay calm and persistent. Also, you should use positive training methods that include praise, rewards and treats to keep your pooch motivated and to encourage him every step of the way. When training a Bully Basset puppy, it is important to have patience and persistence. You should establish yourself as the pack leader of your pup by starting training when they are still puppies. Also, be firm and consistent when training this dog. Another important thing is to socialize your pooch from an early stage with children and other family pets. While the Bully Basset can be active and playful around young kids, be sure to teach your children how to play with your pup without taunting, teasing or hurting him with rough play. Exercise Requirements Basset Hound Bulldog Mix dogs are quite active and need regular exercises to remain happy and healthy. A proper exercise routine should include daily walks as well as quality playtime with his owner. You can always use interactive dog toys to play with your pup outside. These dogs also enjoy running around in a safe and fenced-in backyard. It is also a good idea to take your pup to the dog park from time to time. Your Bully Basset will be happy with 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercises along with short walks each week. Activities that are recommended for this dog include a game of fetch and tug of war. Remember these dogs have moderate levels of energy, so short to moderate activities are ideal. They enjoy quality playtime, but they will also do well in a home or apartment provided they get regular exercises. When he is shedding, brush his coat with a bristle brush each day to keep it in good condition. Give your Bully Basset puppy a bath as necessary, but do not bath them too frequently as this can make his skin dry. You need to bath your pup no more than twice a month if possible. Life Span Did You Know? These dogs are affectionate, loving, and bond closely with their families. They also tend to be outgoing, social, and friendly. Although the Bully Basset is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. English Bully Bassets tend to have affectionate, charming, and sweet personalities. They tend to be easygoing dogs that are also playful. They tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can have a high prey drive, so will need extra training and socialization with other small pets in the household. They also tend to warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. With the Basset Hound in the mix, a Bully Basset will have an instinct to howl. You may not be able to stop it completely in all situations, but you can train your dog to stop barking to keep it from becoming a nuisance. Bully Bassets are moderately adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. As a brachycephalic breed, they are very sensitive to heat and can also be sensitive to the cold. Because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. They also should not be let off-leash in open areas. With the Basset Hound nose, a Bully Basset may ignore recall commands in favor of following interesting smells. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Bully Basset include patellar luxation , heart issues, tracheal hypoplasia, and glaucoma. Reputable breeders will be screening their dogs to prevent passing issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of the parents. Bully Bassets are relatively eager to please and thrive on praise, but they can be stubborn. This can be a challenge for first-time owners to handle alone, so puppy training classes are recommended. Not only do they reinforce training to keep it consistent, but they also help you bond with your puppy and socialize them. An English Bully Basset will have a short coat that sheds moderately year-round. They will need brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath. You will also need to clean their face wrinkles. Nail trimming once or twice monthly keeps nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. The Bully Basset has moderate exercise needs. Usually, daily walks and playtime throughout the day are enough. As a brachycephalic dog breed, they are prone to overheating, so you do want to make sure you keep an eye on them. There are plenty of safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs. After all, plenty of brachycephalic breeds compete in dog sports. Breaking up activity into shorter bursts throughout the day is a good way to make sure this dog gets enough exercise without overdoing it. Fully-grown Bully Bassets usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. English Bully Bassets generally live for years on average. Lord Tweedmouth was an avid waterfowl hunter who wanted to breed a dog with some serious bird retrieving skills. So, in , he bred a yellow retriever named Nous with a liver-colored Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? A pack of puppies with the exact hunting skills he was looking for, which he dubbed golden retrievers. View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Life Span Did You Know? The Victorian Bulldog is a cousin to the English Bulldog. Victorian Bulldogs are slightly larger, tend to be a little bit lighter in the chest, and have a slightly longer snout. Victorian Bulldogs might look a little intimidating, but they are loyal and reliable sweethearts with a gentle nature that make a great family companion. They are very affectionate and thrive on human attention and companionship. They are excellent guard dogs that are known for their courage and protective instincts. They are also great with children and other pets and are naturally gentle with them. They can be suspicious of other dogs if they are not socialized properly. This dog breed may drool a little and snore, but they are a loving and dedicated companion that will love spending time with you. The Victorian Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They do well in larger homes and can also adapt well to apartment living as long as they get enough attention and exercise. They tend to be less active indoors, which makes them a good fit for apartment dwellers. They do best in moderate climates as they get cold easily and do not handle heat very well. Victorian Bulldogs also crave human companionship and attention, so they will not do well with long periods of time alone. This is a hardy dog breed that is relatively healthy. Although they are bred specifically to avoid many of the genetic diseases common to Bulldogs, there are some conditions to be aware of including skin problems, cherry eye, entropion, or hip and elbow dysplasia. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and also to see any health clearances can help allay concerns about potential health issues. The Victorian Bulldog is sensitive, intelligent, and eager to please. They tend to pick up training quickly and relate well to their humans. This makes them a highly trainable dog breed and a good fit for owners of any experience level. They respond best to gentle, positive, and rewards-based training. This dog breed has a moderate grooming level and is an average shedder. Common coat colors are red, brindle, fawn, solid white, or pied. They have a shorthaired coat of fine, smooth fur that requires minimal grooming. Bulldogs are known for their wrinkly faces, which need to be cleaned regularly to avoid irritated skin or infections. Gently cleaning inside the wrinkles each day with a damp cloth will help keep your Victorian Bulldog comfortable and prevent skin problems. In addition to coat and skin care, there are other grooming tasks that every dog needs, like nail trimming, regular ear checks, and dental care. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep nails from getting too long. Ears that flop over can trap dirt, debris, and moisture, which can lead to ear infections. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Dental hygiene chews and a dental care diet can help supplement your dental care efforts. Getting them used to regular grooming tasks and keeping it a positive experience makes grooming much easier as your dog grows. It can even become a bonding experience that calms and relaxed both of you! Victorian Bulldogs have a moderate activity level. They can sometimes act like couch potatoes when they are indoors, but they still need some regular exercise every day to stay happy and healthy. A few walks a day with some playtime or time to run around is sufficient for this stocky pup. Although they are more athletic than their English Bulldog cousins, they still have a short snout, so they can get overheated easily. A fully-grown Victorian Bulldog usually stands between inches tall at the shoulders and weighs between pounds. A Victorian Bulldog generally lives years. The Victorian Bulldog was bred to recreate the appearance of the Bulldog breed from the early 19th century, so it looks more like the Bulldogs from years ago than those of today. Currently, we do not have any Victorian Bulldog puppies available, but we can alert you when new Victorian Bulldog puppies are available! Just enter your email address and click submit! Ken Mollet used breeds recognized by the Kennel Clubs and Healthy dogs developed by prominent dog breeders. He used Bullmastiffs, Staffords and Dogue de Bordeaux in his bid to accomplish this mission and used any source he could obtain the perfect idea of how the bulldogs looked like in Victorian times. how many puppies does a golden retriever usually have - Coming home to your fluffy pets runny nose can be a bit of an issue, especially if the discharge is thick to purulent. Seasonal changes not only affect us humans but our furry babies as well. No matter how common this is with your English Bulldog, it is still important to know the underlying cause. Why does my English Bulldog have a runny nose? The other reasons can be a lung or respiratory tract infection, cleft palate, abscessed teeth, or even as fatal as cancer. If you are not able to figure out the reason behind this issue, it is important to take him to a vet where he will get examined properly. When in doubt, take him to the vet and get him examined thoroughly. Here are a few common causes for a runny nose. Allergy: If the nasal discharge is clear the chances are that it is caused by allergies. Just how people can be allergic to pollen, drugs, mites, spores, food, and chemicals, dogs can be too. You may witness eye discharge, itchiness, coughing, and sneezing. It might be difficult for him to breathe. Blockage: Clear discharge from one of the nostrils of your dog can be a sign of something stuck in that nostril. It could be a seed or even grass. Infection: A discharge accompanied by mucus or pus could be an indication that your dog has a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. The other signs could be a nosebleed or choking. Polyps and Tumors: Blood or pus with nasal discharge could be a sign of nasal polyps or tumors. If there is a bulge on one side of the nose or you notice noisy breathing you must immediately rush him to a vet. There are also chances that his appetite may decrease. Nostril Problems: Some breeds of dogs are more prone to nasal discharge than the others. This includes flat-faced breeds and also the dogs with floppy nose cartilage. Noisy breathing can be another sign of this issue. Distemper: Distemper is a viral disease of dogs which causes fever and coughing. It can also cause a sticky, yellow nose discharge. There may even be pneumonia, twitching, and convulsions. How to Treat a Runny Nose in a Bulldog Whatever the reason may be, once you have consulted your vet, you will be able to diagnose the problem and treat it well. Based on the reasons written above, here are some of the ways to deal with a runny nose. Avoid triggering the allergy. Your vet may suggest an allergy test or treatment that includes antihistamines, steroids, and immunosuppressants. He might need to sedate your pet before removing the blockage. If there is an infection, the treatment solely depends on the cause. For bacterial infection, the vet may prescribe antibiotics. Fungal infections require antifungal drugs. It the infection is persistent the vet might even have to operate your dog. The treatment for polyps involves surgery most of the time. Polyps tend to reappear, therefore additional treatment may be necessary. However, if the reason behind the nasal discharge is a tumor the treatment options may vary. A benign tumor can be removed although the success rate is quite low. The cancerous tumors can be managed with radiation since the removal is rarely successful. Surgery might be required for dogs with small flat nostrils and for those with a cartilage problem. Your vet may delay the surgery until the dog turns into an adult. When your vet is sure that it is distemper based on the symptoms, he will include antibiotics, sedatives, anticonvulsants, and painkillers in the treatment. Another way to prevent distemper is by vaccinating your puppies three times between the age of 8 to 16 weeks and vaccinating breeding females weeks before mating. Cleft palates or oral-nasal fistulas can only be treated with the help of surgery. A cold is caused by a group of viruses and possess symptoms such as sore throat, coughing, and sneezing. In dogs, the case is almost similar. There is also a group of viruses that can cause cold in dogs. Some breeds like English Bulldogs, Pugs, and Pekingese are more prone to respiratory diseases than other breeds. This means that the symptoms may be more severe with them. A few of the symptoms of a cold among English Bulldog can be: Coughing. Common bacterial causes of CIRDC include: Bordetella bronchiseptica Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus Mycoplasma spp CIRDC is spread through direct contact and is typically diagnosed by veterinarians after a dog's owner notices abrupt coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge. These symptoms often occur after a number of animals have shared a common space, like a pet care facility, for example. Treatment is determined by the severity of the disease i. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases. The irritation they cause to nasal passages can cause runny noses in dogs. These mites can affect all kinds of dogs, regardless of breed, sex, or age. Apart from nasal discharge, other symptoms of nasal mites include nosebleeds, sneezing, impaired smell, itchiness around the face, labored or noisy breathing, and head shaking. Nasal aspergillosis in particular is a fungal infection that affects many animals, both domestic and wild. There are several species of Aspergillus known to trigger respiratory infections in animals. Oftentimes, the infection will be localized in the nasal cavity or sinuses of a dog, but in rare cases it may spread to the eyes and skull. Treatment of nasal aspergillosis typically involves the prescription of antifungal medication, which is administered either orally or nasally. Dogs have a magnificent sense of smell and regularly put their nose to work in exploring the world around them. This, in turn, can lead to nasal discharge in dogs, as well as general irritation and nosebleeds. If left untreated, the foreign object could lead to infection or worse. Nasal cancer A runny nose in a dog is one symptom of a nasal tumor. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, facial deformities, and neurologic abnormalities. To diagnose a nasal tumor, your vet may first order a CT scan to understand the scope of the condition. From there, they may conduct a tissue biopsy and extract tissue from around the nasal area. If nasal cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatments that can be attempted. Definitive radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT may be employed to fight cancer. However, if the cancer has spread into the bones, life-saving treatment may not be possible. Instead of sweating throughout their body, dogs sweat on the pads of their feet and, sometimes, through their noses. Promptly reporting symptoms will help your vet determine an accurate diagnosis. An early diagnosis also means that treatment can start sooner, which enables your pup to get quick relief. At this point, your vet may order a range of tests to help facilitate an accurate diagnosis. For instance, a rhinoscopy, x-rays, or other lab work may be ordered to dig deeper and discover the root of the issue. Below, we explain some of the available treatment methods for the causes described earlier in the article. An allergy test or elimination diet trial may help to shed some light on the allergen affecting your dog. Infections In the case of infections, antibiotics are often needed to combat harmful bacteria. This object may not only be the reason your dog has a runny nose, but also can serve as a source of pain and irritation. Nasal cancer As we mentioned above, treatments such as radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT can be effective in battling nasal cancer in dogs. However, once cancer spreads to crucial areas such as the bones, little can be done to treat it. If the nasal discharge is clear, it may be a sign of a seasonal allergy or a reaction to the heat. However, if nasal discharge is discolored, bloody, or has pus in it, you should take your dog to the vet. When in doubt, schedule a consultation with your vet. What can you give a dog for a runny nose? If allergies are at fault, then allergy medicine may help soothe symptoms. If an infection is the root cause, then antibiotics may prove effective. In any case, always talk to your vet before administering medication to your dog. Final Notes A sense of smell is central to a dog—it allows them to perceive the world around them and better understand their environment. Beyond that, you may be worried that a runny nose is a sign of a more serious underlying health condition in your dog. While some serious ailments such as cancer are associated with runny noses in dogs, other causes tend to be more mild. If your dog has a runny nose, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. Once the allergy is confirmed, you will be able to reduce allergic reactions by avoiding the allergy trigger altogether. Symptoms As well as this isolated nasal discharge, other common signs of a blockage in the nose include nosebleeds, sneezing and pawing at the nose. Treatment Here, you have a choice of either treating the blockage at home or at the vets. If you can see the cause of the blockage and have a steady hand, you can probably remove the blockage yourself with tweezers. The inside of the nose is incredibly sensitive, so even a small cut could lead to a lot of bleeding. Polyps and tumours Some English Bulldogs have excessive nasal discharge as a result of growths in their nose. Nasal polyps are the medical term for overgrown mucus-producing glands, whilst nasal tumours, which present similar symptoms, can be benign or cancerous. Symptoms If you suspect your English Bulldog has growths in the nose, look out for the following symptoms: Blood, pus and mucus being discharged from the nose. A decreased appetite. Noisy breathing. Treatment Of course, if you see any kind of growth on your English Bulldog, it is paramount that you take them to the vets to be assessed. Polyps and benign nasal tumours are often treated with surgery. Given the fact that polyps tend to reappear, your English Bulldog may need multiple bouts of surgery. Nasal and sinus infections English Bulldogs can also catch sinus infections. This may be from other animals or from coming into contact with something unsavoury outside. They can catch bacterial, fungal or viral infections. Symptoms Although symptoms may vary based on the type of infection, some of the most common symptoms of an infection in your English Bulldog include: Green or yellow mucus or pus being discharged from their nose, which is often followed by coughing and choking. Nose bleeds. A pungent and unusual odor. If your English Bulldog is suffering from a fungal infection, your vet will prescribe you specialist anti-fungal drugs, whereas if your English Bulldog has a bacterial infection, your vet will put them on a course of antibiotics. If an English Bulldog ends up having frequent infections which is often the result of a poor immune system, a lack of vaccinations or an underlying illness , your vet may decide that the best course of action is an operation. However, it is also important to trust your judgement if you think something is not right about the nasal discharge or runny nose. With their help, your English Bulldog will be back to their old selves in no time! But did you know that your dog can have a runny nose too? Dog runny noses are more correctly called nasal discharge. It can run the gamut from clear and watery to thick and purulent. The appearance and frequency of nasal discharge in dogs can tell you much about the underlying cause. Could My Dog Have Allergies? In Short, Yes. A thin, watery discharge without color or odor is likely a sign of mild irritation in the nasal cavities. This can occur with seasonal allergies or other causes of inflammation within the nose such as an inhaled foreign object grass and seeds. In some cases, antihistamines will clear up the discharge without further incident. Dogs do sometimes respond to environmental allergens just as humans do—with red, watery eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose. More Serious Causes of Dog Runny Noses In cases where the discharge is thick, has odor, or discoloration with blood or pus, more serious causes are suspected. Any exposure to dogs otherwise? If both nostrils are involved, the causes are frequently different than if only one nostril. Both nostrils points to a more generalized cause while one nostril points to a localized source. If the discharge is clear, thin, and watery, your veterinarian may try antihistamines and monitoring at home for any other signs. If none develop, and your dog seems otherwise healthy, it may be normal for a small amount of discharge to occur. No further treatment may be needed. If the discharge continues or worsens, then more diagnostics are needed. In the case of unilateral discharge one nostril involved , the causes could include an inhaled foreign body such as grass or grass awns leading to rhinitis, a fungal infection, or a nasal tumor. Your veterinarian will likely try a course of antibiotics. If no response occurs, then the next step is generally a rhinoscopy. In this procedure, your dog will be anesthetized, a camera will be inserted into the nostril to look at the area, and samples will be taken for culture and biopsy. In some cases, a CT scan of the head is needed to make a definitive diagnosis. If both nostrils are involved, this points to a more generalized problem such as a viral or bacterial infection. Dogs are prone to both especially if they board at a kennel, visit the dog park, or go to grooming facilities. Canine influenza is becoming more common in the dog population. In this case, concurrent with the runny nose would be a fever, sneezing and coughing, lethargy, and often lack of appetite. Pneumonia is a possible side effect. Canine kennel cough , a common bacterial complex, can also cause a nasal discharge. This generally occurs when the disease progresses to pneumonia. Summary In the case of a dog with no other symptoms and some clear nasal discharge, a runny nose is not cause for immediate concern. It is when your pet develops other symptoms such as red, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, fever, lack of appetite, or lethargy that a trip to the veterinarian is warranted.
