Now that Black is accepted in the show ring you see more American Bulldog Kennels breeding for it. That being said we prefer a white dog with black patches over a heavily black colored dog. We have no plans to breed just to produce the black color but there are some nice Black American Bulldogs that we have used in our line in the past. If you are looking for a solid black American Bulldog or a very heavy colored black American Bulldog there are other kennels out there that concentrate on producing that color. Our main goal at Bull Pull American Bulldogs is to produce well structured dogs with good temperaments no matter the color. We do lean towards a more athletic dog with a bullier type without being over done and un-functional. Take a look at our dogs and accomplishments to see what we strive for. Color is the last thing you should look for when choosing to add an American Bulldog to your family. Temperament and health should be the first things you look for. But when it comes to colors our favorite color combination is a white dog with red patches but a white dog with black patches is probably a close second. Bull Pull Kennels has an up and comer named Macho Man that is an almost all white with a black ear patch. Pictures of him are at the top of this page. We will be updating information about him on our males page as he matures. Life Span Did You Know? These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. At Grand Future, we typically produce large American Bulldogs. Males range in lbs and females range in lbs. We have always bred to a significantly stricter breed standard than the current American Bulldog breed standards under U. Dogs with the following characteristics are not shown at conformation shows nor bred in our kennel: 1. Full black mask — this genetic trait is usually a result of another breed having been infused into the gene pool. Usually a dog with a kinked tail itself is not at risk of health complications as a result of the kinked tail. Teeth — dogs missing more than 3 teeth. Dogs lacking full pigmentation are more susceptible to various health problems. Lack of pigment is also responsible for deafness in dogs. We have never produced a deaf dog. Interested in a puppy? We have many repeat buyers — over 30 families have purchased 2,3,4, and even 5 dogs. Our dogs generally love children and have balanced temperament. Having produced over dogs in 7 generations, we have history and data that allows us to make some conclusions that we believe are significant. The very common problem of hip dysplasia that afflicts this breed is nearly non-existent in our kennel. Our dogs tend to have normal locomotion — good movement due to anatomically sound physical structure. Our dogs have never torn ligaments such as the Canine Cruciate Ligament CCL , which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never prematurely died from heart problems, which leads us to conclude that such problems are likely hereditary in nature. Our dogs have never been diagnosed with tracheal hypoplasia — a hereditary genetic defect common in bulldog breeds that leads to potential deadly obstruction of the airway. Our dogs tend to live long. Our foundation dog lived to the age of 15 years and 10 months old. Our dogs have never been afflicted with cancer at a young age. The earliest instance of cancer has been encountered at 8 years of age by one dog. The remainder of cases have been documented at over 10 years of age. The biggest tragedy for an owner is in having to care for a sick dog as a result of poor breeding, and be absolutely helpless as that dog passes in their arms. Rosco Workman; Photo courtesy of owner: Janean Workman A touch of funny before we get into a serious topic. While there are few dogs that enjoy being by themselves for long periods of time, when a Boxer has separation anxiety, this goes way beyond simply missing his owner. This can be a serious condition that causes both mental stress and is physically wearing on the body. We know how hard it is to leave the house when you know how rough your Boxer is going to have it. While there will always be times that you have to leave your Boxer home alone and there'll never be times that your dog will be happy to see you leave, there are definitely some things that you can do to make the situation better and to ease your dog's stress level. Signs and symptoms that Boxers Display when Having Separation Anxiety Signs of separation anxiety can begin long before an owner even leaves the house; as soon as a Boxer hears the car keys jingle or even sees that an owner is preparing to leave, his nerves can begin to get rattled. Many of the signs will begin after the owner leaves, and is not there to see it however it can often be heard from outside of the house… or neighbors may relay the disturbance. The most common signs include: Excessive barking - This can often be super intense. A dog may bark until he wears himself out; he'll rest and then start up again. Whether a puppy or adult, a Boxer can literally bark for hours until he is hoarse. Panic - The thing about separation anxiety is that the stress that a dog feels builds and builds as the time ticks by. While a dog may have slight anxiety at first, as the day goes by he can get worked up into a frenzy. This can make a Boxer literally bounce off the walls. A dog may repeatedly bash his body into walls, claw at the gates and try to escape his confines. Destructive chewing - This sort of behavior has nothing to do with chewing due to boredom; this will be uncontrolled chewing of anything that the dog can mouth. Items are often ripped apart and nothing is off limits; essentially anything that is within reach may be chomped to pieces. Urination and defecating - Despite the level of house training that a dog has, when overwhelming feelings of panic and stress develop when home alone, the Boxer may urinate and defecate with seemingly no control. In addition to this, it can go a step further where the dog then eats his feces Coprophagia which has several causes, but separation anxiety is one of them. Lasting depression - When a Boxer is totally worn out by a full day of anxiety, it have lasting effects. Some owners think that maybe their dog is mad at them for leaving them alone.A Boxer may not want to eat, exercise or play. He may have trouble relaxing and even sleeping. What Causes Separation Anxiety with Boxers This happens to both genders at the same rate and is not related to how a puppy or dog is treated when with his owners; i. The age that a Boxer develops separation anxiety is broad reaching; it can begin at any age at all even if the environment or duration of time left alone is unchanged. In some cases, a Boxer puppy will do just fine but then grow into this. The reason for this is typically because a puppy lives in the moment and his mind often jumps from one thought to the next; cognitive recognition is not fully developed when at a young age. As he matures, he becomes much more aware of time and is better able to realize when he is by himself. Older senior dogs can develop separation anxiety as well. This is often due to health issues that cause the Boxer to feel vulnerable and is coupled by the fact that an older dog often depends more on his owners for care than his younger counterparts. Another factor is that vision and hearing loss, which is common with senior dogs, can make a Boxer feel antsy; being alone only amplifies those feelings. Continued below How to Help a Boxer with Separation Anxiety There are several things that you can do to make a Boxer puppy or dog cope better when left home alone. Doing just one of these elements will not often make much of a difference, however when most or all of these are implemented, improvement can be seen within just days. This is really crucial. If the area that a Boxer is kept in is too small, this can make a Boxer feel confined and this is already a breed that is prone to claustrophobia. However if the area is too large, this is counterproductive as well. When a dog is left alone to roam a large empty house, he often does much worse than when placed in a smaller, safe area that has all his belongings and needs in one space. Young Boxer puppies do well in canine portable indoor playpens. Most adult Boxers do well if they are placed in a gated off room such as the kitchen; however do be sure to 'puppy-proof' the room no matter the age of the Boxer. All cabinets must have child-proof locks, trash must be secured, etc. Do keep in mind that Boxers do best with natural light coming into the room and when in an area that is very familiar; using a basement or other area that is dark or that the dog is not typically in will make things much worse. As stated above, dogs do best when they are in a room that is well-lit by natural sunlight as this can combat feelings of isolation when home alone, however it is always helpful to leave on a lamp or overhead light as well. Even if you normally return home well before the sun sets, if it happens to rain or even if a storm is close by and the sky becomes cloudy, this can make a house very dark. Dogs that have separation anxiety are often sensitive to light changes; each will have a tipping point…. This is another great tip that can really help dogs with separation anxiety. While you won't be able to trick a Boxer into thinking that he's not alone, hearing pleasant music or voices can have a calming effect. Be careful about which station or channel you choose to make sure that it has appropriate programming all throughout the day; what may be a nice talk show in the morning could turn into a screaming match on Jerry Springer by the afternoon and dogs can relax or tense up simply by the vibe of the noises that they are hearing. Some owners skip this one because their Boxer normally does not show any interest. However, once that same dog is home alone, he will focus on what's around him and a good sized Kong filled with kibble and peanut butter can keep a lonely dog occupied for quite a while. To encourage the use of treat-release toys any meal that would be left out in a bowl for consumption can be replaced with the same amount stuffed into these types of toys. Some dogs do best when able to look at the outside world; it can draw their attention to something new and can offer a feeling that they are not as confined as they really are. However, for others, this may be a situation where every single thing that passes by is a trigger for barking. If your Boxer doesn't do well with windows, you may want to close the shades and curtains. If he does do better with a view, having his area near windows or even sliders can help quite a bit. What do all living creatures have in common? A heartbeat. Just hearing this can offer comfort to a dog that is by himself. And you don't have to bring in another dog to offer this. There are toys that are essentially large stuffed animals that emit a soothing heartbeat. Many young puppies will take comfort and look at this as a protector; adults and seniors may 'mother' the toy regardless of gender. Don't be surprised if this becomes your Boxer's new best friend. Some dogs do just fine during the first few hours, but as the day wears on, the stress builds until it becomes unbearable. Any unpleasant situation seems worse as the time ticks by… and when a dog has separation anxiety, even a tiny break can give him a 'reset' button. If you can't break away and go home for lunch, you may need to reach out for some help. Some options are to have a friend, family member, neighbor or even a hired dog walker offer a 30 minute break about halfway through the day. During this time, your Boxer can be taken outside for bathroom needs and then be exercised which allows a healthy release of pent-up energy. While your Boxer probably has a zillion toys already, do take note of how many he actually plays with and if enough of them are the right type for when he's home alone. Toys to help with separation anxiety must do 1 or all of these 3 things: Draw in his focus, offer textures and durability that will satisfy chewing urges or be interactive. There are 3 types of training that should be done: 1- Train your Boxer to not pick up on cues that you're leaving. Canines are remarkably smart. Just about anything that is part of your morning routine before leaving for work is a trigger that can make a Boxer start to feel stressed. This can include making your morning coffee, looking for your keys, putting on your coat, reading the paper while eating breakfast, etc. Most dogs quickly figure out that when these things happen, they are in for a long day alone. This can be reversed. When you are home, at random times you'll want to grab your keys or do any other task that is normally done in the morning… but then either do not leave or leave for a very short amount of time. When you do leave for these 'practice' runs, vary the amount of time that you're gone… 10 minutes one day, 20 the next. When you leave, do this in a very casual way. Far too many owners anticipate a Boxer's anxiety and try to soothe the dog before leaving with all sorts of attention and petting. It's best leave in a calm, matter-of-fact way. Coming home should be a calm event as well. Many owners will rush over to their Boxer and this can cause a burst of confused emotion and well as confirm that the dog was correct in being upset that the owner was away. It's best to enter and take a few minutes to check the mail or get a drink and then approach and release the Boxer. The only exception, of course, would be in the puppy or dog had an urgent bathroom need. Finally, don't place your Boxer in his spot right before leaving; this is particularly applicable for Boxer puppies that are placed in playpens. It's better to have him there a good 20 minutes before you actually go so that he does not develop negative association with the area. When you are home, have the pup spend some time there so that he sees that it does not always mean that you will be gone. Ideally, you'll want to allow for at least 30 minute each morning to walk your Boxer , allow for bathroom needs and have quality interaction before leaving. This is easier said than done and most people rush around to get ready for work; however if you can wake up a bit earlier this can go a long way. Should You Get Another Dog? In most cases, when a Boxer has another dog with him, this does eliminate the issue of separation anxiety. We would never advise someone to take on the huge responsibility of having more than one Boxer for this reason alone. Supplements and Medications There are some canine calming supplements that have been shown to work to some degree. These will do very little on their own if other methods are not implemented. Calming collars with lavender have been found to be of some help, when used in conjunction with toys and other aides. In some cases of very severe separation anxiety in which nothing helps and the dog is suffering overwhelming stress, it may necessitate medication. Benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants may help a Boxer that does not respond to the changes and methods listed above. His guardian set up a dog behavior training session to address his possible separation anxiety and the triggers that get him worked up when his guardian prepares to leave the house. Boxers usually have big personalities and a get in your face way of greeting you so I was caught a little off guard when Ryker kept his distance and remained so far away to start the session. After suggesting some changes that will help Ryker feel more confident in the leadership of his guardian, I was ready to address his fear of the kennel with some basic kennel training. Many people fail to even consider that they may need to help their dog practice being inside the kennel. But its a confined space and for some dogs, the kennel becomes associated with the human leaving as that is the only time the dog is asked to go into the kennel. By practicing having Ryker in the kennel for progressively longer periods of time while she is home and the door is open, his guardian can help him learn the crate is a safe place to relax in. I want a dog to think of the kennel as their own room. A location they seek out when overwhelmed or need to get away. This kind of positive dog training goes a long way when crate training a dog. Any good dog behaviorist will tell you this is pretty much a panic attack for dogs. In many cases, this starts long before the human actually puts the dog into the kennel or leaves the home. We call these triggers and identifying them is an important element to identify when treating a dog who suffers from Separation Anxiety. I handed my camera over to his guardian so I could go over an exercise to help her learn how to desensitize Ryker to these triggers. You can watch this dog training exercise in the video below. Desensitizing a dog is a very effective way to help it using positive dog training, however it requires a lot of repetition. Ideally in short minute practice sessions between naps the dog takes. Once Ryker has these down, his guardian can put him into a stay and go get a drink of water, use the bathroom, etc. As Ryker develops his stay skill-set, his guardian can use it to help him practice being alone in another room, while she is still in the house. Create a dedicated space for your Boxer Creating a dedicated space for your Boxer is an easy way to help him feel safe, secure, and comfortable when left alone. This space should be as far away from external noise as possible. Outside noises, building works, cars driving past and people walking by will keep your Boxer on high alert and prevent him from relaxing. The dedicated space can include his crate, water, comfort blanket, and interactive toys. If your Boxer has an issue with ripping up his toys then you should choose an appropriate toy. A good tip to get your Boxer accustomed to a certain space is to play with him often in that spot only. Leave the radio on, TV or play a recording of your voice Keeping background noise like the TV or radio will help to drown out external noises such as people, cars, and other animals. It will help to turn the radio or TV on well before you leave the house, that way your Boxer will get used to the sound while you are in. If you have the equipment to record your own voice and play it back on a loop. Record yourself having a random conversation to yourself and play it back on a loop when you leave the house. How to prevent coughs in dogs? Why do dogs cough? As your pet explores the world with their nose or mouth, they encounter germs, dirt, tiny bugs, bits of grass, and many other particles. If some of this material is breathed in, your dog may cough to expel it. No big deal, right? And if the coughing is accompanied by changes in breathing, it could indicate something more serious. Set goals. Compare with dogs like yours. Monitor sleep. Detect issues and keep them healthy. Shop Dog Trackers Is it a cough or a gag? Coughing and gagging may sound similar when they happen, but they are not quite the same. A cough is caused when your dog forces air out of the mouth and throat. Gagging is more akin to vomiting, but nothing comes out except some phlegm or mucus. Gagging can lead to coughing and coughing can lead to gagging, but either can happen on its own. Gagging is often the result of your dog gulping down large chunks of dry food or swallowing something distasteful. Gagging is a natural process to rid the body of the swallowed or partially-swallowed item. What are the various types of dog coughs? Your pooch feels the same way! Take action sooner rather than later to help your pup recover from the cough and head off a more serious illness. This will help your vet decide the best way to care for the cough and make your pooch more comfortable. Dry, hacking, cough that is deep-sounding Gagging and high-pitched cough Wet and phlegmy Deep and honking, like a goose Each type of cough indicates a different problem. Take a video of your dog coughing and show it to your vet. This will help the vet decide if the cough signals an emergency or could be contagious, like kennel cough or canine influenza. What are the symptoms of kennel cough? Kennel cough typically causes your dog to produce a deep, dry, honking cough. Kennel cough is caused by several types of bacteria or viruses, but it produces only mild illness. Kennel cough is highly contagious and is often spread in group settings such as obedience classes, boarding facilities, or dog parks. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to alleviate the cough. Be sure to keep your pup away from other dogs until they are no longer contagious. The Bordetella vaccine can protect your dog from getting kennel cough. It can be administered as an injection or nasal spray. Talk to your vet about this vaccine, especially if your dog is boarded frequently. Look around for clues to determine if your dog recently chewed on or ate something that could have lodged in the throat. If you suspect a foreign object is lodged in the throat, seek veterinary care as this could block the airway or cause infection. Just keep a close eye on your pup after an incident like this. Environmental allergens Pollen, smoke, fungi, and other inhaled allergens can cause coughing in your dog. If your dog has allergies, consider keeping them indoors during peak allergy season, or ask your veterinarian for medication to alleviate the symptoms. Toy dog breeds and obese dogs have an increased risk of developing a collapsed trachea. Tracheal collapse occurs when the cartilage surrounding the airway weakens. Treatment for a collapsing trachea includes weight loss and medication to reduce coughing. Pneumonia A wet, phlegmy cough may indicate a buildup of fluid in the lungs. If the fluid becomes infected, then your dog will have pneumonia. One way to know if your dog might have pneumonia is to watch their breathing. If breathing is labored even when the dog is resting and not coughing, that may be a sign of pneumonia. You may notice the cough becoming more prevalent when your dog is lying down. Heart disease is more likely to occur in older dogs. Canine influenza Coughing, along with sneezing, runny nose, runny eyes, fever, and lethargy can signal canine influenza dog flu. Ask your vet about supportive care for your pup, such as fluids and other medications to reduce fevers. If your dog has coughed daily for more than two months, they may have canine chronic bronchitis. This chronic condition is unlikely to resolve, so treatment focuses on addressing the symptoms. Other reasons for coughing in dogs include heartworm disease — which should not be a problem if your pup is on regular heartworm medication. In a reverse sneezing episode, a dog actually sucks air in rather than forcing it out. If reverse sneezing becomes a daily occurrence, contact your vet to rule out any other conditions. Laryngeal paralysis is another condition that may seem cough-related. In laryngeal paralysis, the muscles that surround the voice box larynx become weak. Your pup may pant loudly and their voice may change. Always see your veterinarian when your dog experiences changes in breathing. Lung cancer can cause persistent coughing in dogs. But lung cancer is not a common reason that dogs experience coughing. What to do if my dog is coughing Coughing is uncomfortable for your dog and can be tough to listen to for days on end. Plus, it can be a sign of a serious or contagious illness. Do your dog and yourself a favor and seek treatment as soon as possible. And if your dog has a life-threatening underlying cause, beginning treatment early can improve the outcome for your dog. Persistent coughing can irritate the throat. Add a spoonful of honey to a bowl of water, up to three times per day. Close the bathroom door so the room gets extra steamy. Allowing your dog to plenty of rest is important for recovery form any illness. Their body just needs time to recover. When should I bring my dog to a vet? Most cases of coughing in dogs are completely treatable. Labored breathing Is Kennel Cough Fatal? French bulldogs and many other dog breeds suffering from kennel cough can recover without any complications. However, some pups could become very sick — and develop life-threatening pneumonia. Dogs that are more prone to complications from kennel cough include: Young puppies that have immature immune systems Older dogs with decreased immune defense Pregnant dogs with lower immunity Dogs that suffer from pre-existing respiratory diseases How Long Does Kennel Cough Last? Frenchies with mild kennel cough are usually sick for around one or two weeks and will recover pretty well. These pooches typically only experience mild clinical signs and quickly recover from kennel cough — which translates to a good prognosis. That said, French bulldogs that suffer from complicated cases of kennel cough could be sick for up to six weeks — and it takes them more time to recover, too. If your Frenchie is severely affected by kennel cough and develops pneumonia, the result could be fatal. How Is Kennel Cough Treated? For most mild kennel cough cases, treatment generally only includes supportive care, focusing on nutrition, hydration, and rest. A vet may prescribe a cough suppressant that helps reduce the frequency of the kennel cough, too. It usually takes about two weeks for a dog to recover from a milder case of kennel cough. Some Frenchies can completely recover on their own, without any professional treatment. Complicated cases of kennel cough may lead to your pet becoming very sick, though. A French bulldog with a severe form of kennel cough will constantly cough, act lethargic, and refuse to eat or drink. If your French bulldog has developed pneumonia, treatment can involve: Hospitalization. If you believe your French Bulldog is struggling with laryngitis, we suggest you see a veterinarian to be on the safe side. Treatment of laryngitis The first step your Vet will conduct in the care of laryngitis is to stabilize your Frenchie. This can be achieved by eliminating any airway blocking, reducing inflammation, and delivering oxygen into the body. Oxygen therapy, intubation, and respiratory support could often include sedation. If an obstacle occurs in the larynx, a tracheostomy tube can be inserted into a hole in the throat to allow your Frenchie to breathe until the issue is resolved. The underlying reason, as well as associated factors, needs to be treated. Treatment options can include reducing inflammation by using corticosteroids, often alongside non-steroidal inflammation drugs and systemic antibiotics. Diuretic medications may be prescribed to clear fluids from the larynx and lungs. Cough steroid medication and bronchodilators may help with inflammation. Kennel cough is transmitted by sneezing and coughing, and it can also be spread by fabrics or pet toys. With kennel cough, your Frenchie is more likely to develop several complications, such as white mucus with the cough. At the end of your Frenchies cough, you will be able to detect the gagging that will enable you to differentiate it from other disorders it could be suffering. Just like chronic bronchitis, it may lead to coughing fits that result in gagging. Fever, lack of appetite, and tiredness can occur in milder cases. Nose and eye mucus discharge, sneezing, breathing difficulty, and possibly pneumonia may occur in more serious cases. Your Frenchie may retain their normal mood and appetite, not show any symptoms and display a cough with gagging. It still needs medical care, but prevention is better. If your French Bulldog is in contact with several other dogs, such as a local park, or if they need to spend time in a vacation kennel. Then you must follow their vaccination schedule religiously. Please read the following articles to learn more about Kennel Cough. These items can be stuck within the mouth, throat, or esophagus when ingested. Such objects may be anything from bones, fragments, sticks, pins, plastic, toys, bits of cloth, or anything that can get past the top of their throats. Very Frenchie thing When these items have sharp corners, they may exacerbate the issue by creating tears in their throat. If your Frenchie begins to exhibit hypersalivation drooling , vomiting, fear, scratching its mouth across objects or with its paws, as well as gagging, then the presence of a foreign object is likely to be involved. If the object is still within its mouth, it will likely be trapped at the back of the tongue. It is much more difficult to extract items lodged in the throat. Their extraction may need to be performed by a veterinarian under anesthetic. If the item stays within the body for a long time, antibiotics will need to be used to prevent infection. Items that go through the esophagus may be spotted by x-rays and need to be extracted by endoscopy or abdominal operation. Stomach Dilation This is the most dangerous cause of gagging for your French Bulldog due to the possibility of death. Rapid detection will save the life of your Frenchie. Dilation of the stomach comprises the following: Gastric dilation : in this scenario, the stomach is swollen by gas and liquid collecting within it. Gastric torsion: at this point, the protruding stomach changes direction in its longitudinal direction, preventing it from being drained. The stomach contents then ferment attributable to the stomach acid, which then grows distension. Blood flow to the region is also compromised and can trigger necrosis of the stomach wall or even ulceration. If this occurs, your Frenchie will have blood poisoning and will probably die. While this disorder may appear in any dog, bigger breeds are much more likely to develop it. Eating fast, consuming water too quickly, and physical activity pre or post-eating may be the underlying cause. Symptoms Include. By Sandra C. While dog gagging can be a benign behavior, there are things you need to know and be aware of so that you know when it is time to visit your veterinarian. It sounds sort of like they are trying to vomit while also coughing. There is a difference between coughing, vomiting and dog gagging, and it is important to be able to distinguish between them. If you can take a video of the behavior, it will help your veterinarian to distinguish what is happening. When a dog vomits , it is usually pretty obvious because food or stomach contents wind up on the floor. Dog gagging usually happens in conjunction with a cough. When a dog is gagging, they may widely open their mouth and make a retching sort of sound. With gagging, there will be no expulsion of stomach contents, like with vomiting. Believe it or not, it does matter. For a veterinarian, the order in which these two actions happen can help them determine which types of diseases they need to be considering. What Causes Dog Gagging? Gagging is caused by inflammation in the area of the larynx. There are a number of things that can cause a dog to gag, and it will often require a veterinary exam to sort the problems out. When a dog coughs first and then gags, we are commonly thinking about problems which cause bronchitis and lower respiratory disease. When a dog gags first and then coughs, we are considering things along the lines of dysfunction of the larynx. Two very common things that can cause gagging in dogs are infectious problems and laryngeal paralysis. Kennel cough , which is a type of respiratory infection, is a common cause of dog gagging, which results in a harsh, goose-like cough, sometimes followed by a gag. There are other infectious diseases that can also cause gagging, and a more severe disease—pneumonia—can sometimes cause gagging in dogs, as well. Laryngeal paralysis can occur often in older Labrador Retrievers. In this condition, the larynx no longer closes properly, allowing some food and fluid to access the airway. Another feature of this condition is a very loud, harsh panting. Laryngeal paralysis often starts out subtly and worsens with time. If your pet is bright, alert, breathing normally, eating and drinking as expected, and appears to be feeling fine, you should monitor the problem for hours. If the gagging lasts longer than this, it may well be something more significant than just some minor reaction from swallowing wrong. If any other symptoms are present—your dog appears worried or distressed, is having ANY trouble breathing, has an increase in noise during breathing, or is not feeling well in any fashion—I would recommend an exam sooner rather than later. Whenever the respiratory system is not quite right, we tend to take the condition seriously as veterinarians. What happens at the veterinary appointment will vary quite a lot depending on the specifics of what your dog is displaying. In all cases, a complete physical examination is indicated. Sometimes, the doctor may be able to make a tentative diagnosis based on this exam alone. Other times, some additional tests may be required. The most common initial tests include blood work looking specifically for signs of infection as well as radiographs of the neck and lungs. Particularly, if the veterinarian is concerned that laryngeal paralysis is a possibility—or if the dog may have swallowed some foreign material such as a ball that is lodged—sedation may also be required for a complete exam of the larynx. The good news is that most cases of dog gagging are relatively straightforward to treat. Even the causes that are more significant, such as from pneumonia or laryngeal paralysis, do have treatments available to either cure or significantly reduce the gagging and make your dog more comfortable. By: Dr. Sandra Mitchell. No comments Frenchies are lovable, playful companions with personality for miles. However, they come with a unique language all of their own! For some new owners, a few of their sounds can be quite startling. Slurping While many dog breeds slurp and slobber while drinking, French Bulldogs make slurping noises even away from their water bowls. These sounds are normal, especially in Frenchies with very heavy or loose lips. Most will make a soft slurping sound when drinking, eating, or waiting for a treat. Snoring French Bulldogs are prone to snoring. Some only snore a little, while others do it every time they fall asleep. As long as your Frenchie is otherwise healthy, snoring is normal. If your Frenchie suddenly starts snoring a lot when they barely did before, it could be a sign of other health issues. Snorting You may hear snorts in the middle of playtime or after your Frenchie has been sniffing around a dusty corner. Excessive snorting, however, can be a sign of narrow nostrils or weak nostril flaps that close prematurely. Snuffling Snuffling often accompanies snorting, especially in brachycephalic breeds such as the French Bulldog. You may hear snuffling while your dog is playing, searching for toys or dropped treats, or after a walk with you. This is another perfectly normal Frenchie sound. Reverse Sneezing One of the most startling sounds is the reverse sneeze. A reverse sneeze is comprised of several quick, involuntary inhalations through the nose, snorting, and gagging. Scary as it may sound, the reverse sneeze is usually harmless. Some common causes include overexcitement, allergens in the environment, and irritation of the nasal and sinus passages. Panting All dogs pant to cool off. If your French Bulldog is panting a lot, they may be overheated. Take steps to cool your pup, and if they still seem distressed, head to the vet. Because of their short muzzles, French Bulldogs tend to gulp air while eating or drinking, and that air must come out sometime. A well-trained adult Frenchie who suddenly barks excessively might be trying to tell you something is wrong, though. Growling All dogs growl, but well-trained Frenchies usually only do it for playtime or to get your attention. If your French Bulldog is growling near their food bowl or a toy, it could be a sign of food aggression or guarding behavior and should be addressed immediately. Crying Yelping and crying are usually signs of trouble. An especially talkative French Bulldog may use this type of vocalization to get your attention, but crying generally means something hurts or that your dog has been frightened. If everything seems fine, your Frenchie might just be telling you about their day. Whining French Bulldogs will use a series of high-pitched whines to express their sadness, loneliness, or stress. Gagging Brachycephalic breeds tend to gag a lot due to gulping too much air with their water or meals and overexertion. A little gagging is normal for Frenchies, but excessive gagging and obvious signs of distress should be checked by a vet right away. Wailing Some Frenchies love to talk, and one of their signature sounds is the Frenchie wail. French Bulldogs may wail after getting scolded or if they feel lonely, too. Wrap Most of the sounds your French Bulldog makes are normal. Conclusion Why do Frenchies gag? Unfortunately, Frenchies have a habit of combining this gagging with a cough which means their mouths are wide open and they can produce retching noises. Should I be concerned my Frenchie is gagging? What are common causes of gagging? They have BOAS This stands for Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and is common among dogs that have a smushed face, Frenchies belong in this group, along with other bulldogs. These pets are increasingly popular among pet lovers all around the world because of their squished faces however the physiology of their face leaves them open to a very specific health condition known as BOAS. The squished nature of their face leaves their nostrils thinner and smaller. These can restrict their ability to respire and increase the possibility of them choking. Their larynx is inflamed Because of their largemouth, French bulldogs leave open access to their throats much more than other breeds of dogs this can cause a viral or bacterial infection of the larynx. A series of underlying disorders may cause this such as cardiovascular disease or another injury. But in the vast majority of cases, laryngitis is easily managed, and seeking medical care will quickly reduce the symptoms. Kennel cough Another common cause of gagging among French bulldogs is tracheobronchitis, also known as kennel cough. French bulldogs are naturally curious, and one of the primary causes of gagging with no evidence of vomiting may be the existence of a foreign object in their throats. These objects may be bits of cloth, toys , plastic, pins, sticks, fragments of bone, anything that can pass through their mouth to the entrance that her throat might get stuck. Dilated stomach One of the most worrying causes of gagging in Frenchies that if left untreated is stomach dilation. This can easily result in and coughing or gagging as they may have a roundworm infection. What can I do to stop my Frenchie from gagging? Offer them a drink to try and wash away any lodged food if they have been eating. How to tell the difference between your dog coughing or gagging In French bulldogs, this is sometimes difficult as they have a tendency to combine both but the non-scientific way to identified gagging is to identify it as a noise that is made either immediately after or before a cough. Identify a gag or a cough The easiest way to differentiate between a gag and a cough is that a Frenchie cough consisting of mucus or saliva will leave their mouth, but they will swallow the vast majority of it. Gagging will usually come with a cough and their mouth will be open widely making it a loud retching sound. Nothing will come out of the mouth by a small amount of mucus but your dog may not want to swallow it immediately on occasions with extreme gagging they may expel their stomach contents similar to vomiting. Conclusion Frenchies are undoubtedly one of the most popular and adorable dog breeds in the world. But before you get one, you need to know that they come with their own complexities. Expect a fun, friendly, lively bag or fur. Picking up the phone if you have any concerns is the least you can do. If you don't have time to exercise them daily, they will find ways to keep themselves entertained while indoors! If you want your dog to be able to swim, it's best if you start teaching them when they're young. These dogs were bred for working purposes, so it makes sense that they are able to spend time alone without being destructive or acting out in any way. A Doberman Pinscher Golden Retriever Mix is an excellent choice for a first-time dog owner or someone who wants a companion that is good with children, other pets, and active families. The Doberman pinscher golden retriever mix has a lot of energy so it's important to have plenty of time for exercise outside. They are also great for people who work from home because they won't be destructive if left alone too long. Due to these two factors, it's safe to say that this breed of dog can be great companions for those with allergies! If you're still worried about allergies and want something more specific regarding your own needs, it might be best to talk with an expert veterinarian who specializes in allergies at your local vet clinic or animal hospital. They'll be able to help you find the right type of dog for your situation and likely give some good suggestions too! They are a great choice for families with children or other pets. They will most likely only have one or two breeds. This ensures that there is only the registered breed involved with each dog. The breeder and owner will be able to answer any questions that are logical. The puppy mill breeder will likely have multiple breeds and not much order maintained as far as keeping each breed separate. This is one reason they will not allow visitors around the facility. This facility will not be able to answer detailed questions. What are the prices at each facility? The licensed breeder will have higher costs due to the legitimacy of the health records, the breeding standards and medical care given. There is no cutting costs for those that are actually legitimate breeders and owners. At the puppy mill breeder, they will have much below average costs for purchase. The reasons should be obvious, they are not registered or licensed. Proper medical care is not given and it is possible that you will not receive the breed that you expect. With multiple breeds at this facility and no true control or maintaining order between breeds, it may not be obvious until the dog is much older. What does all this mean for you, the buyer? This should show you that if the facility is not up to par, unwilling to show you the facility and where the dogs are kept, they likely are not legitimate. In other words, rather than spending any money here, run! The cost may save you money financially, however, you most likely are not getting the breed you are seeking. Little Known Facts A Golderman may have a long coat. The Golden retriever is known for that flowing golden color coat. However, the Doberman does not have a long coat. It is quite possible that your Golderman will have a short coat. These Golden Pinschers are a first generation Hybrid dog breed. This means that since the Golden Pinscher is still relatively new, the parents are each purebred. Which parent is which does not matter, you will have one Golden Retriever and one Doberman Pinscher. Since both breeds are both considered to be large breeds, apartment living may not be ideal for the Golden Pinscher. Their weight can easily reach 85 pounds. This breed needs the room to roam and run, to be playful and burn off some of the energy. Temperament This can be slightly confusing for new owners or those considering adoption. Since the breed is still relatively new, it can not be stated as a solid fact that the temperament of these gorgeous Goldermans or Golden Pinschers will always be the best of both breeds. Historically, the Doberman is known to be trained as a security guard. Their temperament may lean slightly more to the fierce or mean side. While the Golden Retriever has always been known as docile and gentle. It is also wise to remember that the dog will have the temperament you teach. If you want a gentle and loving dog, treat it gently and with love. Like children, the animal learns what it is taught. If your family is active, likes to be outside and moving, then this is the perfect dog for family. If you are looking for a dog that will love you just as much as you love him or her, then this is definitely the dog for your family. If you want a gorgeous dog, with great features, a beautiful coat, and a temperament that is most known to be that of a Golden Retriever, then of course, this is the dog for your family. If you are looking for an animal that will still be a guard dog and protect your family, a dog that is loyal to your family, then this is the dog to research. If you have a home that gives the dog a place to run, enough room inside and the dog will be exercised regularly, then check out the Golderman. Kids and Pets The Golderman is a dog that is notorious for being the best of both breeds, again, still relatively new, however, no negativity has been reported in regards to the fierce side of the Doberman being the main temperament. From what has been seen thus far, more of the Golden Retriever temperament is more prominent. Your children will be great and have an awesome companion to grow up with. When it comes to new pets or existing pets, be sure to use slow introductions at first. This will enable the two dogs, or the dog and cat, a chance to get to know each other without being forced together in the same room immediately. Again, the reminder is that there is no guarantee which breed temperament will come to a puppy. The behavior of your new Golderman will show more of what it receives from you. If however, you do see more tendencies, small animals may be too much of a temptation for the dog. Children should also be taught how to treat animals properly. A child should not be allowed to torment the dog in any fashion. When a child understands that they can rely on the dog, just as much as the dog is able to rely on its humans, a good relationship should build naturally. Diet and Exercise As stated previously, the combination of these two breeds is still relatively new. We are all learning. However, since both breeds are known as working dogs, they need a diet that is rich in protein. They need daily exercise and attention. They need love. The Golderman is a highly energetic dog, they need to run off energy, whether in an enclosed area or in a backyard that is protected. Grooming and Healthcare Like all of our family, being clean and healthy is of utmost importance. The History of the Doberman and the Golden Retriever Many purebred dog breeds today have extensive histories, including being hybrid or cross-bred dogs at some previous point in the breed development. The Doberman and the Golden Retriever dog breeds are no exception. Each dog breed has its own fascinating history that is worth learning about. As a bonus, taking time to learn about the history of each parent dog can give you more insight into the possible traits and temperament of your Golderman puppy. Doberman history The Doberman is the 17th most popular out of American Kennel Club registered dog breeds purebred dog breed in America today. The Doberman was originally developed to provide protection and guarding for tax collectors making their rounds in Germany. Louis Dobermann crossbred German Pinscher dogs with terriers, herding dogs, and even Rottweilers to get the tall, stately and fearless dog we call the Doberman today. Golden Retriever history The Golden Retriever is the 3rd most popular out of American Kennel Club registered dog breeds purebred dog breed in America today. The Golden Retriever was not bred to protect or guard but rather to retrieve and hunt. These dogs were bred from a now-extinct dog called the Tweed Water Spaniel. Other breeds that were crossed to produce the Golden Retriever include the Bloodhound and the Irish Setter. Doberman Golden Retriever Mix: Personality and Temperament While the Golden Retriever is famously friendly, the Doberman often gets a bad rap due to their aloof appearance. It is true these dogs are fearsome-looking to outsiders, but their people know them as affectionate, loving, and sometimes truly goofy! At the same time, since some breeders have deliberately tried to breed for more aggressive personality traits, it is important to learn about the individual personality and temperament of each parent dog to be sure your puppy will be friendly. The most important trait to understand about the Doberman is that these dogs were bred to work. They really need a lot of daily exercise and activity to stay happy and healthy. Dobermans that get bored will likely become destructive. Similarly, Dobermans that get lonely will likely act out. A Doberman that has a lot of exercise, activity, training, canine athletics to participate in or a job to do is likely to be a happy, healthy, well-socialized, and productive member of any family and community. However, Goldens are also known to become destructive when they get bored or lonely. These dogs have been bred through generations to live and work closely with people and cannot tolerate boredom or too much alone-time, even if they have other dogs around. The key to a happy, well-adjusted Golden Retriever is a busy and active Golden Retriever. In this, they are nearly identical to the Doberman dog. Doberman Golden Retriever personality and temperament With any hybrid breeding between two energetic working dogs like the Doberman and the Golden Retriever, you know in advance that you will be bringing home an active, energetic dog that needs your time and attention and a lot of play and exercise. It is so important to consider whether you can provide your dog with enough activity to keep problem behaviors from showing up! Doberman Golden Retriever Mix: Size, Height and Weight When you take the time to learn more about the size, height, and weight of a crossbreeding between a Golden Retriever and a Doberman, it is easier to plan for all possibilities as your puppy grows up. Doberman size, height, and weight The Doberman typically weighs anywhere from 60 to pounds as an adult, with adult males usually outweighing the females by at least 15 pounds. Dobermans are tall, stately looking dogs with long, slender legs. They can stand 24 to 28 inches tall from paw pads to shoulder tops and will often look taller than that. Golden Retriever size, height, and weight Even though they actually weigh less, Golden Retrievers tend to have a slightly stockier appearance than do Doberman dogs. These dogs can weigh anywhere from 55 to 75 pounds and stand .Here again, adult males tend to be a bit bigger and taller than females, although this is not always the case. Doberman Golden Retriever size, height, and weight No matter what genetics your Golden Retriever Doberman puppy inherits, you know you are going to be bringing home a big dog breed. Your Golderman may weigh anywhere from 55 to pounds and stand .Likely, your mix dog puppy will fall somewhere in between those numbers. Meeting the parent dogs can give you a better guesstimate of the maximum size you can expect. Both dogs have been bred through many generations to work hard at their jobs on a daily basis, usually for many hours at a stretch and often in difficult climate and weather conditions. This has created a mental and physical toughness in these dog breeds that is likely to be inherited by your Golderman puppy. In fact, according to Science Alert , Golden Retrievers and Dobermans rank in the top 10 smartest dog breeds at numbers four and five respectively for learning and replicating commands — out of 79 dog breeds! So what can you expect to need to provide in terms of training and exercise? Doberman training and exercise needs Dobermans are very sensitive and intelligent dogs. They have to be in order to be effective in their primary job guarding and protecting their people. But Dobermans have also been bred with strong territorial and protective instincts and so they need help figuring out when there is a genuine threat versus when all is well. The key to training a smart, sensitive, and observant dog breed like the Doberman is positive training methods. Dobermans do need to be able to run and romp and play daily and they make amazing canine athletes. Golden Retriever training and exercise needs Like the Doberman, the Golden Retriever has been bred to work hard, long days and to do so in very close company with people. These dogs are highly attuned to their people and also make amazing canine athletes. They can run, swim, jump, track — they can do it all. Because Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent like Dobermans, you only want to use positive reinforcement training with these dogs. Pats, praise, playtime, and treats are your pathways to get the results you want in training. Training can help them learn to distinguish when to be welcoming and friendly and when to alert their people about a potential threat. With proper training and socialization, Golden Retrievers make very reliable guard dogs. Doberman Golden Retriever training and exercise needs From this overview, you can predict that your puppy is going to need your help figuring out when to guard and protect you and when to be welcoming. Your dog is also going to need lots of daily play, exercise, attention, and praise to stay happy and healthy as a companion canine. And if you can enroll in any kind of canine athletics, your dog will likely excel and will enjoy themselves thoroughly, as will you. Doberman Golden Retriever Mix: Shedding, Grooming and Coat Care Another area where new dog owners often have worries or concerns is in the arena of shedding and coat care After all, dogs are fantastic. So what can you expect of a Golderman hybrid dog breed? How much will your puppy shed and what kind of coat care and grooming will you need to do? They look like the Secret Service of dogs — not a hair is ever out of place. Oddly, unlike most working dog breeds, Dobermans have a single-layer coat. They also have very short, flat hair that is easy to brush and maintain. These dogs are pretty much as good as you will get in terms of low-maintenance coat care. They do shed, but not significantly. Brushing your dog regularly will keep the shed hair to a minimum. Golden Retriever shedding, grooming, and coat care Golden Retrievers, in contrast, have a double layer coat that sheds all year long and more profusely seasonally. So you will need to brush your dog regularly and bathe if you notice any doggy odor. Doberman longevity and health On average, Doberman Retrievers have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.
Contact How to Potty Train an English Bulldog in 12 Simple Steps Apart from chewed furniture or scratched doors with a young or untrained English bulldog, coming back to a house that reeks of urine and feces can be utterly distressing. All dogs do not like soiling their usual eating and sleeping areas and are instinctively cleaner. Therefore they learn to not urinate and defecate in their crates which means it is not impossible to potty train them. How to potty train an English bulldog? Begin by designating a potty spot in the yard. Take the English Bulldog to the potty spot every hours to normalize this area for when it needs to potty. English bulldogs are strong-willed, so while they are trainable, it can take some time, persistence, and patience. But in the end, they will be potty training. Why does my English bulldog pee in his bed? Bedwetting is a common problem among dogs, and there is a solution to this. However, before figuring out the solution, it is essential to find out the possible reasons behind it. Dogs will try their best not to soil their sleeping areas. This comes from their wild instinct of keeping their den clean, and if something is going against that instinct, it could be behavioral, emotional, or medical. It is best to consult a veterinarian to rule out any illness behind this unusual behavior. There could be several reasons behind your English bulldog peeing in his bed. Urinary Tract Infection UTI Urinary tract infections are common in dogs and are caused by fungi, bacteria, or parasites in the urinary tract. Urinary infection can increase the frequency of urination, urgency, bloody urine, and improper urination in your dog. Bulldogs are susceptible to urinary tract infections more than other dog breeds. Female English bulldogs are more at risk of getting UTI than males, but male bulldogs can still get them. Your dog does not forget his house training, but the disease makes it quite difficult for your dog to stop the flow of urine when he wants to go. Hormone Responsive Urinary Incontinence Your English bulldog may pee in his bed while sleeping or relaxed. He may not be able to hold his urine that leaks out involuntarily. This is more common in middle-aged spayed female bulldogs. When a female bulldog is spayed, her ovaries are removed, resulting in a decrease in her estrogen production. With a decrease in estrogen, the sphincter becomes relaxed, making them leak urine. The problem gets worse with age. Your English bulldog could also be suffering from separation anxiety. If your dog is left alone at home for long hours, then he can grow extremely distressed and may start urinating and even defecating indoors. To know more about how to help a distressed bulldog read, Is My Bulldog Stressed? And How to Treat It! Territory Marking All dogs do urinary markings out of instinct. Some dogs, including English bulldogs, mark around the house to keep potential intruders at bay. Your dog may start marking inside the house and let out only small amounts of urine in strategic places. Your English bulldog may be insecure about his belongings and may start peeing at different spots in the house to keep others away from them. This usually happens after a new family member, a human, feline, or a canine, is brought to the house. But this is different from wetting their beds. How to Help your Bedwetting English Bulldog? Your English bulldog may feel insecure due to the arrival of a new family member, be it a human or another pet. If your English bulldog pees in bed due to some underlying emotional issue, then observe what happens before bedtime. Take time to note would could be causing this behavior. Many times, simple changes can resolve this issue but if professional help is needed, seek the advice of your vet. If peeing in bed occurs on a regular basis, then I would recommend getting a waterproof bed. A waterproof bed or bed cover will make it easier to clean up, especially if you are training a new pup. Even with a waterproof bed, continue to take your English bulldog outside to potty in the appropriate spot. Shower your dog with praise when it does potty outside. Another wonder help is to use an odor neutralizer on the spots your bulldog pees. This will discourage your English bulldog from peeing inside the house. Potty Training the English Bulldog The first thing to understand when potty training your English bulldog is that there is an immense need for repetition and consistency. An English bulldog should be potty trained when they are young to instill this habit early on. Adult bulldogs may also be given the training. Potty training, an English bulldog puppy, will need some hard work and so be prepared for it. The following tips can be helpful in potty-training your English bulldog. If the puppy has been used to pee pads or newspapers as was done by the breeder for a long time, then the training may be a bit tougher. Take away the newspaper so they are not available for use. Take your English bulldog puppy out every two to three hours for a potty break, especially after naps, meals, playtime, and before going to bed. Choose a safe spot for your puppy that is protected from all elements so that the potty breaks are comfortable. English bulldogs are perpetually hungry, and food motivation can work well with them. Reward your dog with healthy treats when it goes out to the designated spot outside to relieve itself and then comes back inside. As your English bulldog puppy starts growing up, you can increase the time between potty breaks as older dogs have better control over elimination. After the age of 6 months, your English bulldog can quickly go about 4 to 5 hours without needing to go out. English bulldogs are mainly indoor dogs, so they can also be trained to use a big dog litter box inside the house. Look out for signs such as your bulldog walking in circles, sniffing the ground. All these are telltale signs that your English bulldog wants to eliminate and should immediately be taken outside the house. Fix a particular area of your yard as the potty area for your bulldog and take your dog to this area only when you first go outside. Eventually, your bulldog will learn to his business at the same spot, making it easier for you to clean up after him. When your bulldog is finished relieving itself, be quick to reward. An English bulldog thrives off praise, gentle belly rubs, or a dog treat for a job well done. Create a specific place in the house for your English bulldog to potty. Always use positive reinforcements when potty training an English bulldog puppy or an adult dog. Scolding the dog can create fear and a lack of confidence. A dog that is uncomfortable is more likely to have an accident. English bulldog puppies are a powerhouse of energy that have not developed proper control over their bladders. These pups grow fast, eat more, burn calories quickly, and in turn need to eliminate more frequently than their adult English bulldog counterparts. For hard floors, laminate or tile, use absorbent cloth, paper towels, or a mop to absorb the pee. Then clean the surface to remove any lingering residue and smell. Use an enzyme neutralizer that can break down the protein-based molecules in urine that cause bad odors. You can use the same on soft surfaces like carpets and sofas. It is easier to clean on hard floors, but if your English bulldog pees on smooth surfaces like carpet, bed, or a sofa than cleaning can be an uphill task as these surfaces can absorb the pee. If this happens, immediately use napkins and towels to blot out as much pee as you can. Then sprinkle some water and put some drops of mild soap over the spot where your dog peed. Then use another towel to dilute the remaining amount of urine. Sometimes even after you have cleaned the pee, the stench can linger, so what should you do to eliminate them? Removing the odor is essential as your dog will think that the area is an acceptable place to relieve himself. One of the everyday household items that you can use to remove the odor is baking soda. Spread the baking soda all across the damp spot. Remember not to take too much of it. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight and then vacuum all the baking soda thoroughly several times until the area feels clean. Another method uses one more household item, and that is vinegar. Take a spray bottle and mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of water and two teaspoons of baking soda. Mix the ingredients thoroughly by shaking them up. Then spray this mixture on the stain and allow it to sit for some time. Later blot the area with clean towels or napkins until clean. Vinegar neutralizes the smell of urine without fading the carpets and sofas and is excellent for cleaning and protecting them. English bulldogs are adorable but also have a stubborn streak in them. This can make it difficult to train , especially potty training. Praises and positive reinforcements through voice commands and treats can do the trick. Shouting or raising your voice can be disturbing to an English bulldog. Aggressive behavior from the owner can make the bulldog withdraw, setting back the training, and making him even more stubborn. Remember, positive training will lead to positive results! Post Views: 1, I have experienced this adorable overload personally working as a dog walker. My job to visit a Bulldog puppy each day for a potty break was a dream client. Are English Bulldogs easy to potty train? On average English Bulldogs can be easy to potty train when set up for success. Bulldogs are notoriously stubborn and can be hard to train at times. Teaching an English Bulldog to potty train will require consistency, patiences, and positive reinforcement. Successful potty training of any dog requires a number of factors to put your puppy in the best position to succeed. English Bulldogs are no different. Though they can be a little harder to train, potty training can be much easier if you follow a few simple techniques. In this post I have outlined some of the best tips for potty training an English Bulldog. I have used these techniques on both of my dogs and potty training was very easy. Using these same tips with your English Bulldog will ensure success and clean floors. As a general rule it will take as long as months to potty train an English Bulldog. Some dogs learn faster than others, but techniques in training will make all the difference. Being proactive, consistent, patient and positive you will shorten the time frame of your English Bulldogs potty training. Generally when a dog is able to go several weeks in a row without an accident in the house I consider them to be potty trained. Though some English Bulldogs can be potty trained by the age of 4 months, a more common timeline is closer to 6 months. The success of your English Bulldogs potty training will depend primarily on you as the owner. Follow the tips in the sections below and your potty training will be over sooner rather than later. On average English Bulldogs puppies can hold their bladder between hours depending on their age. The general rule is 1 hour per month of age. Adult English Bulldogs can hold their bladder for hours or longer, but it is best to get them out to relieve themselves every 5 hours. Variables such as activity level, amount of water consumed, and the age of the dog will all contribute to these timelines. Senior English Bulldogs may develop weaker bladders as they grow old. Adult Bulldogs may need more frequent potty breaks if they are well hydrated and very active. Each dog will be different to varying degrees. Pay attention to some of the warning signs of an English Bulldog that needs to potty, and be aware of how much water they have consumed since their last potty break. There are several techniques used to successfully potty training an English Bulldog. Being proactive, consistent, positive, and patient are all important components to set your dog up for success. By controlling your puppies environment and setting them up for success potty training can be done easily. Below are 12 of the best tips and techniques you can use to successfully, and hopefully easily, potty train your English Bulldog. By following each of these tips you will reduce accidents, create a positive learning environment, and increase your puppies chance of early success. Be Proactive With Training One of the most important tips for potty training your English Bulldog puppy is being proactive. There is a reason I put this up as the first tip. Being proactive will give your dog the best chances of potty training success. This means taking them out before they have a chance to go in the house. Take your English Bulldog puppy outside to potty when they: Wake up in the morning Finishing eating or drinking Wake up from a nap Have not been out in 2 hours Before they go to bed at night. By following these simple guides you will reduce the amount of accidents in the house by a significant degree. Yes it will feel like you are going outside more than you are inside some days. That is part of the potty training deal. Literally making 10 trips a day outside was the norm, and at times exhausting. But you know what happened? Be proactive. It works! Establish A Potty Routine Puppies know very little when it comes to basic commands and training in general. One thing puppies do understand very well is a routine. Dogs are creatures of habit, and puppies are no exception. English Bulldog puppies will understand a routine far sooner than they will understand much of anything else. That is why it is important to set up a routine that your puppy can count on. When your puppy knows that they will be going outside first thing in the morning, or right after dinner time, they are more likely to hold their bladder. When a puppy has no routine they will not know the next time a potty break is coming and relieve themselves whenever, and wherever they please. Make routine a key component of your potty training and your puppy will learn to hold their bladder instead slightly longer in anticipation of an outside break. Following a routine one week and not the next week can undo a lot of training progress. Stay consistent with routines, rewards, and places you take your dog to potty. Limiting the area your puppy has access to in the home can reduce where accidents might happen and allow for you to keep a closer eye on their activities. Allowing a puppy to have free roaming access to the entire home will lead to hidden accidents. You might not see your puppy pee behind the couch in the other room. This may create a new spot where your puppy will go to relieve themselves in the future without you having a chance to properly clean up. Baby gates are a great way to limit access to rooms in the home. Attaching a leash to your waist to keep your puppy nearby at all times is also a good option. Controlling the space your puppy can access will make a big difference. I will typically let my puppy have a drink hours before bedtime and then remove it for the night. This will ensure that your puppy has an empty bladder after their pre-bedtime potty break and can make it through most, if not all of the night. Not removing their access to water can lead to mid night accidents or very early morning potty runs. The crate is one of the most effective potty training tools you can use. Dogs will avoid relieving themselves in places they sleep and eat. By providing your English Bulldog puppy with a small, yet comfortable place to sleep and relax, you are preventing accidents from happening when you are asleep or out of the home. Crates should be large enough for your puppy to easily stand and turn around inside. Not too big that they can go to a corner and relieve themselves however. The crate will allow you to leave your puppy for short periods of time without worry of accidents. It also allows the puppy to learn to control their bladder. Once you do return home or wake up in the morning, get your puppy straight outside from their crate for a potty break. This is very important and goes back to being proactive, routine based, and consistent. I personally would recommend the iCrate from Midwest Homes. This is the exact crate I use for my puppy and it is amazing. The iCrate comes with an adjustable panel that has allowed me to gradually increase the space my puppy has access to as he has grown. Instead of buying a new crate every other month, I just adjust the size. By showing your English Bulldog puppy where and what to do their business on you begin to create an association. Grass areas are the preferred spots to do this sort of training. The smell and texture of the grass is much different than anything in your home. After some consistency in this practice your Bulldog puppy will automatically identify grass as the place where they can relieve themselves. Use Potty Pad Alternatives Potty pads can be a way to minimize clean up in the home as well as designate a spot where your puppy goes potty. There are however much better alternatives. Potty pads are not a natural surface that your dog will find outside. As mentioned above, associating a spot like grass will create a connection for your dog. Potty pads can prolong potty training progress and be hard to wean off. Once you start removing potty pads your dog will just continue to go on the floor of the house. Alternatives like the Doggies Lawn are far better to create the association we are looking for. As well as a more natural way to train. Naturally covers up the smells, earth friendly, and lasts for weeks, unlike one time use puppy pads. This product is such a brilliant idea. This will not only teach your puppy that grass is the spot to potty, but is just so much nicer to have in your home or on your balcony compared to those stinky, ugly, and sometimes messy potty pads. Check out Doggie Lawn as a great potty pad alternative. Each and every time your puppy successfully goes potty outside you make them feel like a champion. Shower them in praise and some of their favorite treats. Show your dog that what they did is highly desired behavior. English Bulldogs are eager to please their family members. This constant and consistent positive reinforcement will teach them quickly what you are trying to accomplish. My puppy is 5 months old and accident free for a couple weeks now. I still make a huge deal of his success. Never stop while they are in training. Never Punish Accidents There are some old school opinions out there when it comes to punishing potty training failures. These techniques do not work and should be avoided completely. Not only does your dog not understand why they are being yelled at, hit, or man handled, you are creating a sense of fear. This can lead to behavioral problems down the road. Developing this fear based reaction can lead to stress, anxiety and even aggression issues. Never punish your English Bulldog puppy when they have an accident. Simply ignore them for a bit when they do. Clean up the mess, and move on. You have a chance for success in just a few hours. The only party responsible for accidents in the home is you. Try again and remain calm. Know The Potty Time Warning Signs Even when your dog is on a great routine, you are being proactive, and consistent, they will need to potty out of the blue. Knowing the warning signs of an incoming accident are important to spot and interrupt as soon as possible. One of the major signs your dog is about to relieve themselves is sniffing around an area and turning in circles. This means they are looking for a spot to potty. Immediately interrupt this behavior by distracting them or even picking them up and getting them outside. Establishing ways for your English Bulldog to alert you they need to go outside is not only a neat trick, but an effective potty training method. Things like bells at the door where you go out for breaks are great. You can teach your dog that anytime they touch and ring the bell you will get them outside. This may take a few days to teach, but once you have that line of communication open it is amazing. When potty training my Staffy she would alert me by sitting at the door and staring at the door knob. This was before I had considered bells, but it was just as effective in letting me know she needs outside. Sure your dog might abuse this just to go for a trot outside, but I would rather that than an accident inside. Remain Patient With Potty Training Patiences is going to be your greatest asset in the potty training months. It can be so easy to get frustrated and tired. Puppies are a lot of work and sometimes it seems like they never stop pooping and peeing. But remain calm, and stay patient. Losing your cool will not help your training. It can in fact hurt your progress and create a distrust or fear in your dog when you lash out. I have had to take several deep breaths many times over the past couple months potty training my puppy. Just when you think things are getting close to complete, an accident occurs. I get more upset with myself about not preventing the accident, but I have to remember this is a process and takes time. Go easy on yourself and your dog. With time and all of the tips I have listed above you will have success. These are some of the most grueling days of training, but they will pass. Contact Us How to house train a English bulldog puppy the right way The easiest way to go about house training your new bulldog puppy is by utilizing a crate. Dogs are and always have been den and pack animals, they naturally and instinctively prefer the shelter of a den. Therefore most dogs will not urinate or defecate in their crate, which is why it is such an invaluable tool for housebreaking. The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot. A Few Tips to Help You Succeed Puppies will need to go potty first thing in the morning, after every meal, as soon as they wake up from naps and just before bedtime. A few hours before bedtime take up his water, this will help buy you a litter more time between potty breaks at night. If you see him smelling a particular spot or circling around, pick him up and take him outside. Keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals. Puppies may not initially like the crate. Some will cry, whine, bark and drive you crazy the first couple of days. Doing so will teach your puppy that if he barks or whines long enough he will get rewarded and this will only encourage the behavior. Training an English bulldog puppy takes time, consistency and patience. Dogs function best with structure, routine, and clear expectations. Share this post. Buy Now on Amazon If you click this link and make a purchase, we earn a commission at no additional cost to you. If you have access to a backyard, pick out an area where you can take them. Always encourage them and support them when you house train; using passive-aggressive tactics on a dog can create fear and insecurities. What cues will puppies give that they have to go potty? Some begin to sniff the floor. A few spin around in a circle. Some whine, fidget or head for the corner or door in the room. Once you discover the signs or cues your puppy gives, the easier it will be to get him outside at the right time for a potty break. The crate should be large enough for the puppy to turn around in and lay comfortably but not large enough that they can eliminate. If your pup does eliminate itself in the crate, it may be too large. If you start with a larger dog crate, section it off. While potty training, I would simultaneously be crate training. If I were in the immediate vicinity of the puppy and able to be vigilant in watching him, he would be outside the crate. I would also crate train a puppy to sleep in the crate. As they grew and matured, they would go in and out of their crate at their will. Because dogs do not like to relieve themselves in their sleeping area, this made potty training very easy. For one, puppies have small bladders and cannot hold their urine for long, and two; it would be cruel to do so as puppies need socialization. When you bring the puppy out of his crate, take him immediately outside to relieve himself. Once he does, be sure to pour on the praise and positive reinforcement. Take the puppy outside for potty breaks every 2 hours. This has been the method I have used over the years and has been very effective. Start with picking out an area where you want your pup to relieve themselves. Make it a habit to take them to that area to potty every 2 — 3 hours to normalize this. If your English bulldog constantly pees in their bed before getting to the solution, we need to find out the reason behind it. For the most part, your bulldog will try not to pee in their bed. A few more common reasons are urinary tract infection, hormones, emotional issues, and marking territory, which is different from potty training. A UTI in an English bulldog will lead to constant urination, urgency, blood within the urine, and improper urination. Bulldogs are more vulnerable to a UTI than most other dog breeds. The female bulldog is even more at risk than its male counterpart, even though the male can still get them. Your bulldog might be fully house trained, but having a UTI makes it hard for your dog not to urinate when the urge is there, and potty accidents can occur. Hormone Responsive Urinary Incontinence Your bulldog might pee the bed while asleep or just relaxing. This happens more with middle-aged spayed female bulldogs. Getting your female bulldog spayed means her ovaries are removed, bringing down her estrogen production levels. Low estrogen levels make it difficult for your bulldog to control the muscle that allows them to hold its urine. Over time this becomes more prevalent with age. Emotional Issues If you notice your bulldog acting out of the ordinary, they could be experiencing stress, worry, or even anxiety. Even fear, if they are afraid of something or someone at home, they might decide to stay in their bed and not leave to go potty. Some things can make your bulldog insecure; this could be a new family member or another pet. Separation anxiety is another emotion they might be experiencing. If left at home alone for long periods of time, they can become distressed and begin to urinate and leave feces within your home. But if not, a vet visit to rule out medical problems or a consultation with a certified dog trainer might be in order. English bulldogs mark their spot around the house to keep outsiders away. Usually, they start doing this when someone other than the dog owner is brought into the home, maybe a new roommate or guest. This can also happen when a new puppy or adult dog is brought into the home. But be aware that this is not the same as your bulldog wetting the bed. Hardwood Floors and Tile If you have hard floors or tiles, use a strong absorbent cloth, paper towels, or a mop to absorb the urine. You can then clean the surface to remove any lingering smell. Carpet and Furniture Carpet and furniture can absorb the urine once it hits the surface. Once you notice this happening, get some paper towels to absorb what you can from the surface, then spray some water and a few drops of soap over the urine spot. Then get another set of paper towels or napkins to get the rest of the urine you can out. Be sure to spot-check first. Odor After cleaning up after your bulldog, you might still have the smell lingering. You want to remove the odor, or your bulldog will think the area is appropriate to potty again. Baking soda is a helpful product; just spread the baking soda over the area where the urine was located. Let it rest overnight, and then use a vacuum to get the baking soda out. A final tactic you can try is vinegar. If you mix vinegar with some baking soda and put it over where the urine was located, the mixture can neutralize the smell without fading the surface of the carpet or sofa. This is helpful in cleaning and maintaining your furniture. Again, remember to spot-check. You can also find products for this in pet stores or online. Popular Posts. Below is my housetraining post. Some dogs like to feel certain things under their feet when they eliminate, like fabric, or newspaper. Thus the chicken, cheese, steak. I love clicker training, but this can be done without clickers. Yes, even in winter. So, leash up your dog. Be boring. Bring a book or magazine for yourself. You want to make this memorable for your dog! Before you know it, you have a trained dog. Just clean them up. Until you step in it. This is something they grow into. Patience, patience, patience!!!! The same goes for the anal sphincter. Until control is achieved, both of these muscles operate on reflex: there are stretch receptors in the bladder wall. When the bladder is full, it sends impulses to the spinal cord and these, in turn, send signals to the sphincter to open and the dog pees. In the stomach wall, there are also stretch receptors. So when the dog eats and the stomach is stretched, the impulses again go to the spinal cord, but this time the reflex, outgoing, nerve signals are sent to the anal sphincter, so the dog defecates.

Usually patient with children and other pets Trainable Adaptable So a double doodle with ancestors from these breeds is likely to be the same again. Some areas in which Poodles differ from Labs and Goldens are: Friendliness towards other dogs. Labs and Goldens usually love other dogs, whereas Poodles are more likely to remain disinterested and aloof. Poodles are also more likely to be protective of their home, and bark at unfamiliar people who approach it. Some double doodle mix dogs may also inherit these traits. Training and exercising your Goldendoodle Labradoodle Goldendoodle Labradoodles are usually very responsive to training and easily motivated to take part in training games. All of their ancestral breeds were working dogs, so breeders selected only the most adept and trainable dogs as sires and dams for the next generation. Double doodles from working lines as opposed to show lines are particularly quick learners, but this is often coupled with a big appetite for mentally stimulating tasks like training games and puzzle toys. They are good companions for runners and cyclists, because they possess athleticism and stamina in spades. A miniature Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix needs a similar amount of exercise, but they might struggle to keep up with on long runs or bike rides. In which case a big yard, or daily access to hiking trails or a dog park will be a better match for their needs. We all want a healthy pet who will enjoy many uncomplicated years with us. The main health problems facing Golden Lab Poodle mix dogs are: Orthopedic conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia. This is particularly true in big Goldendoodle Labradoodle crosses. Eye problems including cataracts and a type of hereditary blindness called progressive retinal atrophy. Immune-mediated skin problems triggered by an allergic reaction to something in their diet or environment. Ear infections. Thyroid disease. Labradoodles and Goldendoodles being considered as stud dogs or dams should be health tested for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye problems at a minimum. Good breeders will already have proof of the results of these tests before they open a waiting list for puppies. Always ask to see copies, and walk away from breeders who make excuses for not performing them, or not sharing the results. Goldendoodle Labradoodle Life Expectancy The average life expectancy of all three breeds contributing this double doodle combo is 12 to 13 years. Doodles with long, non shedding coats need regular brushing to prevent tangles that tug painfully at the skin. Brushing also lifts out dirt and debris, and helps keep their fur clean. For easier maintenance, most people with long haired dogs book them in for regular salon visits, to have their coat washed and clipped to a manageable length by professionals. Shedding coats also need brushing to lift out dirt from walks. They are likely to shed moderately all year round, but twice a year they may shed heavily. Do Goldendoodle Labradoodles make good pets? Double doodle mixes like the Labradoodle Goldendoodle mix can be great pets in the right home. This mix is likely to be placid and tolerant around children as an adult, but bear in mind that bouncy puppies are a different kettle of fish altogether! Young children should always be supervised with dogs of all ages and sizes. A boisterous big Goldendoodle Labradoodle mix pup is especially likely to unintentionally hurt a small child. Your young dog will need lots of your attention for activities like training and playtime. This is great if you have older children and teenagers who can help out. But it can be overwhelming if you still have babies and toddlers. Goldendoodle Labradoodle puppies Poodle mixes of all types are a popular choice of puppy mills, who keep breeding females and their litters in terrible conditions. Puppies raised in these environments are more likely to have expensive long term health issues, and challenging behavioral problems. Our Puppy Search guide can help you navigate the process of choosing a good quality puppy, including recognizing which breeders to avoid , and knowing which ones you can trust. Including feeding , potty training , crate training , learning to be alone , and setting up the foundations of good basic obedience. Two of the most popular doodle crossbreeds are the Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle, both of which make excellent additions to the family. The Labradoodle combines the traits of a Poodle with the playful temperament of the Labrador Retriever, while the Goldendoodle blends the qualities of a Poodle with the affectionate nature of the Golden Retriever. Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle, which Doodle breed is best for you? Temperament Looking for a lovable companion? The Labradoodle and the Goldendoodle are two poodle mixes that fit the bill as they inherit desirable characteristics from both parent breeds. Since the Labrador is often calm and affectionate, the Labradoodle has the same traits. As a pet, the Labradoodle is bound to make you smile with its extroverted personality and strong desire to spend time with human family members. Both breeds are highly intelligent making them great family dogs, but this also gives them the potential to be trained as service dogs or therapy dogs. Labradoodles also have a sixth sense about what is happening, making them well-suited for busy homes or homes that get a lot of visitors. The standard Poodle and Golden Retriever are among the most intelligent dog breeds, so the Goldendoodle is a smart pooch capable of figuring things out quickly. Due to its intelligence and extroversion, it is important to set boundaries for this breed early on; otherwise, the Goldendoodle may have difficulty reigning in its energy level and enthusiasm. Coat When comparing the Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle, the most distinctive difference is the coat. Purebred poodles have tightly curled hair, which gives them their distinctive appearance. In contrast, the Labrador Retriever has a coarser, thicker hair follicle. Golden Retrievers have a thinner hair follicle, but more hair overall, so they tend to have a fluffier, wavy look. Golden Retrievers naturally have cream, caramel, gold, or red colored puppies, but Poodles come in all colors, so Goldendoodle puppies can be those colors plus black, chocolate, parti, brindle, merle, etc. Popularity Due to their attractive appearance and desirable personality traits, both the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle are extremely popular. They are especially popular among people with allergies, as with proper breeding, they should shed much less than other breeds. The lack of shedding means these dogs are far less likely to trigger allergic reactions or symptoms. Grooming Labradoodle Grooming Due to differences in their coats, the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle have different grooming requirements. Labradoodle puppies need to be brushed regularly, as their adult coats often do not grow in until they are approximately a year old. Labradoodles should be groomed in a specific way, especially if you want your dog to maintain its trademark Labradoodle appearance. For example, the groomer should use a long blade to trim the bulk of the coat. The Labradoodle is meant to have full-looking legs, so the groomer must be careful not to trim off too much hair. Goldendoodle Grooming Goldendoodles also need regular grooming. When trimming the coat, you have a few options when it comes to length. A short cut is also more comfortable during the dog days of summer. You could even give your Goldendoodle a layered look by cutting the hair so that it tapers down to the legs. Training Labradoodle Training Their high level of intelligence makes Labradoodles fairly easy to train, as a Labradoodle puppy is quick to learn new commands and has a strong desire to please its human companions. Initially, Labradoodle training should focus on building a positive relationship between you and your dog. Your Labradoodle needs to know that it can trust you, so avoid yelling or making gestures that could be interpreted by the dog as threatening. During the first training session, establish yourself as the leader of the pack. One way to establish yourself as the leader of the pack is to be careful not to give your dog too many treats. A treat should only be given when your Labradoodle follows a command. Otherwise, your dog will not understand its place in your family, and you may have trouble getting it to follow your rules. If you have children, make sure they know how to handle a puppy. Otherwise, your pup is likely to display undesirable behaviors as a response to stress. Setting expectations helps ease anxiety and ensures that your canine companion knows what to expect while living with you. When you start training your Labradoodle, one of the most important things you can teach it is to wait patiently. If you teach your dog to wait, you can avoid jumping and other undesirable behaviors in the future. The best way to accomplish this is to show the Labradoodle you have a treat and then ask it to sit and wait. If the dog runs toward you, paws at the treat or jumps on you, take the treat away. Only give your Labradoodle the treat if it sits and waits for you to take action. Otherwise, your dog will think it can get what it wants by displaying undesirable behaviors. Goldendoodle Training Due to the similarities in their personalities, the training methods for Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are fairly similar. To socialize your Goldendoodle, take it to a local dog park or look for a puppy playgroup in your area. In a pinch, you can also invite friends and family members to come to your house and meet the dog. Just make sure everyone you invite knows how to interact with a puppy without scaring it or coming off as overly aggressive. Once your dog is comfortable, start introducing it to new people and new circumstances. A hiker with a backpack, a person on a bicycle and someone wearing a hat are all people your dog should meet, as your puppy needs to get used to people who look and smell different from you. Like Labradoodles, Goldendoodles are usually quick to catch on when it comes to learning new commands and following the rules. Just be sure to establish that you are the pack leader or your Goldendoodle may decide that it would rather have fun than listen to you when you tell it to get off the couch or stop jumping on people. Goldendoodles need consistency and structure, so try to do a training session at the same time each day. Once your Goldendoodle has been socialized and learned basic training commands, try walking or hiking together to help the dog use up some of its energy. The size of a doodle depends on whether you have the standard, miniature or medium version. Standards typically range from 21 to 23 inches high for females and 22 to 24 inches high for males. Miniatures are tiny, as they are typically 14 to 16 inches high. Mediums are slightly smaller than the standard version, with females ranging from 17 to 19 inches high and males ranging from 18 to 20 inches high. The miniature version can weigh as little as 15 pounds or as much as 30 pounds, while the medium Labradoodle typically weighs anywhere from 30 to 50 pounds. Follow the link to read our guide to learn how big do Goldendoodles get? Lifespan As a mix of the Poodle and the Labrador Retriever, a Labradoodle can have health problems that are common in either breed. Labrador Retrievers and Poodles often develop hip dysplasia. With proper care, the typical life span of a Labradoodle is 15 years, making this breed an excellent choice for a long-term companion. Our guide on the lifespan of a Goldendoodle will be really helpful to understand that breed. Since Goldendoodles are part Poodle, they may also develop hip dysplasia as they get older. Eye conditions and a narrowing of the aortic valve are also possible, as these conditions are associated with Golden Retrievers. Again, working with a reputable breeder can help you reduce the risk of these problems, as quality breeders are vigilant about using only the best dogs for breeding purposes. Goldendoodles have an expected life span of 10 to 15 years. At what age is a Poodle fully grown? Poodles are considered fully grown adults at two years old and tend to show emotional signs of maturity, like a calmer nature, around 18 months. At a year old, most Poodles will have reached their final height or very close to it. However, most Poodles will require a full two years to fill out their chest and reach their final weight. Image Source: Pexels How big should a 6-month-old Poodle be? A six-month-old male Poodle will weigh around 41 to 48 pounds, while a six-month-old female Poodle will weigh about 28 to 34 pounds. Both male and female Poodles at this age stand at around 18 to 22 inches tall, which for some Poodles is already their full adult height. Pro Tip: Check out this ultimate pet parent guide with 39 dog care tips on pet first aid kits, puppy-proofing practices, training, veterinary appointments, and more! How much bigger will my Poodle get? There are a few ways to assess how much bigger your Poodle will get. The first is age. If your Poodle is less than a year old, they still have significant growth left! If your Poodle is between one and two years old, they are likely still filling out a bit, but are probably at their adult height. Do they still look oversized next to their legs and body? If this is the case, they are probably still filling out as this is a classic puppy feature! A Poodle puppy will rarely grow larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you an idea of their maximum size. What is the size of a full-grown Poodle? According to the American Kennel Club Official Poodle Standards , an adult male Poodle is 60 to 70 pounds while an adult female Poodle weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. By these standards, full-grown Poodles will be over 15 inches tall when measuring from the ground to the highest point of their shoulders while standing. Most Standard Poodles will stand between 18 and 24 inches tall. Smart lifestyle choices are essential in keeping your Poodle happy and healthy. The Veterinary Centers of America recommend a long walk, jog, or intense play to fulfill their daily exercise needs. Poodles were bred as retrievers and, as such, are keen on games involving retrieving like fetch. Many Poodles also enjoy swimming. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without their pet parents realizing it. Poodles are not overly prone to weight issues with a balanced diet, but their coat can disguise weight changes. Their full coats also require regular upkeep like brushing and combing every other day, professional grooming every six weeks or so, and watching for potential eye problems. Poodles are prone to weeping eyes and eye irritation from lashes or hair, so keeping their eye area free of long hair is ideal. As a purebred dog breed, Poodles are more susceptible to genetic health problems. Many of these genetic health problems can be screened for early on using DNA technology. These early screenings can help you and your veterinarian prevent and minimize health complications from these genetic diseases. A bove all else, regular veterinary care is the best way to make sure your Poodle stays healthy. Between health screenings, regular veterinary care, bloodwork, x-rays , dental cleanings , and more, your veterinarian is your best resource in caring for your precious Poodle puppy. Be aware, vet visits can quickly become expensive - especially when immediate treatment or surgery is needed for an emergency or illness. With many treatments and surgeries costing thousands of dollars, this can quickly put pet parents in a pinch should the worst happen to their pet. Poodles are larger dogs, which can also increase the price of treatment. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance reimburses you for out-of-pocket veterinary costs and provides a safety net should the worst happen to your Poodle. As purebred dogs, Poodles are more prone to genetic health problems, like bloat or hip dysplasia, which can quickly become expensive to treat. Final Considerations Poodle puppies grow into elegant, proud dogs who are true aristocrats of the dog kingdom. We know how much your Poodle pup means to you and that they deserve the best! The poodle's bright demeanor and people-pleasing nature make him an excellent pal for humans and peacekeeper among other pets. Standard poodles are the most athletic and agile of all the poodle types , and they take quickly to training. Poodles also have the privilege of being low odor and among the least-shedding of all coated dogs. So they're pretty much perfect, right? Not so fast. The timid poodle can border on neurotic at times, and he's easily stressed out by noise and any amount of chaos or conflict. Poodles can also be time-consuming and expensive to groom. But if you can deal with these quirks, you'll be rewarded with a loyal, lively pet who loves to make you happy. Appearance Poodles are known for their curly coat, long pointed nose, and small dark eyes. They're also famously associated with one of the most ornate dog grooming styles ever—the topiary continental clip, which leaves curly pom-poms of hair carefully shaped around the joints and chest. Those unfamiliar with poodles might be surprised to find that the flamboyant continental clip is largely seen only on show dog poodles—family pet poodles usually go with the more subtle sporting clip, which is a short and fuss-free style. You'll most often find poodles with white, black, or brown coats, but they exist in a wide range of shades from apricot to silver. Miniature poodles are between 10—15 inches, and toy poodles are under 10 inches. Standard poodles can weigh between 50—70 pounds, with female dogs tending to weigh less than the male ones. The standard is the largest and strongest of all the three poodle types. Temperament Poodles are loyal, smart, and playful. And while they're friendly pups, they will bark to alert you to any noises or visitors. The breed's response to unfamiliar faces can range from friendly and engaging to shy and reserved. These highly intelligent dogs also seem to have a sense for reading their owners' body language and expressions, making them intuitive companions. Their sensitivity doesn't stop there; they're also prone to getting pretty emotional themselves. Poodles are hypersensitive pooches who can be easily startled by touch or sound, so watch out for bouts of anxiety. These happy, high-strung animals love to romp around, bounce, run, and play nearly non-stop as puppies and young dogs. But their activity levels do change with maturity, and you can expect them to calm down a bit between 18 months and 2 years of age. Standard poodles are also generally more calm than miniature and toy poodles. Living Needs Poodles need tons of exercise and opportunity for movement, so access to a spacious fenced-in yard is ideal. If you don't have a big backyard to offer your pup, make sure you make plenty of time for walks and visits to the dog park or another pet-safe open area for them to run and play. If you're a nature-lover, a poodle is a great pick. They're naturally adventurous and love the water , so they make excellent outdoor companions. Try not to spend too much time away; this curly companion thrives on time spent with his people and poodles can develop separation anxiety issues if he doesn't get enough attention. They're gentle and polite with kids , but because of their hypersensitive nature they can be easily overwhelmed by small, loud children and will need time to decompress. Poodles are better suited for families with older or no children. Similarly, if your home is often chaotic, noisy, or conflict-prone, your peaceful poodle may develop some anxiety issues. Poodles much prefer and appreciate a calm, quiet living arrangement. Care The poodle is the original "hypoallergenic" dog breed thanks to his single-layer coat that doesn't shed much though remember that no dog is percent hypoallergenic. If you or someone in your family suffers from dog allergies, a poodle could be the pup for you! But heads up: His coat, low-shedding as it may be, requires a lot of attention. And, even if they are taking the dog to a groomer, they will still need to keep up with daily needs, including brushing. Most owners have their poodle's coat cut to one short length, in a grooming style known as the sporting clip. Poodles who are left with their manes to grow need meticulous daily brushing —once their curly coats become matted, the only solution is to shave them down and start over. Unless you're taking up the clippers and teaching yourself to groom your poodle, you'll need frequent grooming appointments. It's an expense you'll want to keep in mind when considering adding a poodle to the family. Poodles are extremely active, athletic dogs who need plenty of daily exercise and love long walks. They're up for adventure and love to stay busy, so it won't be hard to keep them moving. Most poodles love to swim, and swimming can be an excellent workout for your curly cutie. They also love playing fetch and can get some of that abundant energy out chasing after balls and sticks in the backyard. Thanks to their high intelligence and people-pleasing nature, poodles are fairly easy to train and enjoy making their humans happy. Keep training upbeat and encouraging, with lots of praise and consistency to get your eager-to-please poodle in his groove. Relative to other breeds, the poodle is easy to potty train. It also often leads to a dog who enjoys learning and wants to participate in other activities," Hunter Mayer says. Check with your veterinarian about the appropriate recommendations for dog food brands and ingredients, how much and how often to feed your dog , and other dietary concerns. Health Poodles have a lifespan of 12—15 years and are generally healthy dogs. Additionally, reputable breeders routinely test breeding stock for health issues, so if you're taking care to research the breeder you're working with when picking a purebred dog, you should know the dog's lineage and what health problems if any run in the family. Standard poodles are also prone to contracting Addison's disease , an issue with the adrenal glands, as well as a life-threatening condition called bloat , which is an accumulation of gas or fluid in the dog's stomach. Keeping regularly scheduled veterinary appointments will help you stay up-to-date on your pup's health and well being. History The name "poodle" most likely comes from the word pudelin, a German-language reference to the breed's fondness for water, according to the AKC. The breed originated in Germany as duck-hunting, water retrieval dogs. The flamboyant continental clip haircut style that most associate with the poodle has functional origins. Because the dogs were jumping into freezing water to retrieve their owners' hunt prey and too much heavy hair would weigh down the dog, owners would strategically clip the fur on their limbs to give them freedom of movement while swimming, leaving longer hair near the dog's organs and joints to protect them in the cold water. Courtesy of Presidential Pet Museum The poodle's friendly temperament and lovable looks eventually caught the attention of members of French nobility, and the breed soon became popular throughout Europe. Poodles' natural elegance and trainability also made them the stars of many European circus acts. The standard poodle was eventually bred down to the miniature and toy poodles we also know and love today. In fact, the poodle is the only breed with three size classifications. Fun Facts The poodle is the national dog of France despite the breed originating in Germany. The French call the breed caniche, which means "duck dog. Was this page helpful? It is approximately the same length as the height at the withers. The skull is moderately rounded with a slight but definite stop. It has a long, straight muzzle. The dark, oval-shaped eyes are set somewhat far apart and are black or brown. The ears hang close to the head and are long and flat. Both the front and back legs are in proportion with the size of the dog. The topline is level. The tail is set and carried high. It is sometimes docked to half its length or less to make the dog look more balanced. Dewclaws may be removed. The oval-shaped feet are rather small and the toes are arched. The coat is either curly or corded. While it does not make the written show standard, some breeders are breeding parti-colored Poodles. See grooming for different types of Poodle clips. Temperament The Standard Poodle is proud, graceful, noble, good-natured, enjoyable and cheerful. This highly intelligent dog is one of the most trainable breeds. Some can be trained to hunt. The Standard Poodle is generally lower energy and often calmer than the smaller varieties of Poodles, but will become high strung if you do not give it the proper amount and type of exercise. It is sensitive to the tone of one's voice and will not listen if it senses that it is stronger minded than its owner, however it will also not respond well to harsh discipline. Owners need to be calm, yet possess an air of natural authority. It are not the type of dog to live outside in a kennel, as it enjoys being with its owners and dislikes being alone. It is generally friendly toward strangers, and is excellent with children. The Standard Poodle is good with other dogs. Some can make good guard dogs. Make sure you are this dog's firm, consistent, confident pack leader , providing daily pack walks to avoid separation anxiety and other unwanted behavior issues. Height, Weight Height: 15 inches 38 cm or more. Weight: Males 45 - 70 pounds 20 - 32 kg Females 45 - 60 pounds 20 - 27 kg The sizes of the official AKC-recognized Poodle breeds are determined by height, not by weight. The Standard Poodle is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders. Health Problems A long-lived breed, Poodles are, nevertheless, subject to many genetic diseases. Runny eyes, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, which may cause blindness. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are also common. They are prone to Von Willebrand's Disease. Brown Poodles tend to become prematurely gray. Prone to bloat , so it is wise to feed your Standard small meals a day, rather than one large one. Living Conditions If given enough exercise, Standard Poodles are relatively inactive indoors. They will be okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. A small yard will suffice. Exercise The Standard Poodle needs to be taken on a daily walk. Although they adore water and love to go for walks, Poodles are not demanding as far as exercise goes, so long as they get their walk in. They however, will keep in better spirits and be fitter if given regular opportunities to run and play off the leash in a safe area. The Standard retains its sporting instincts, has great stamina, and needs more activity than the smaller varieties. Life Expectancy About or more years Litter Size About puppies Grooming Extensive grooming is needed if the dog is to be shown. Poodles must be bathed regularly and clipped every six to eight weeks. Clean and check the ears frequently for wax or mites or infection and pull out hairs growing inside the ear canal. The teeth need regular scaling. Since the coat does not shed it needs to be clipped. There are several different types of Poodle clips. The most common for pet owners is an easy care clip called a "pet clip," "puppy clip" or "lamb clip," where the coat is cut short all over the body. Popular show clips are the English saddle and the Continental clip, where the rear half of the body is shaved, bracelets are left around the ankles, and pom-poms are left on the tails and hips. The AKC standard allows for a dog under a year old to be shown in a show-style puppy clip which has special requirements such as a pom-pom on the end of the tail. Other clip styles are the modified continental clip, town and country clip, kennel or utility clip, summer clip, and the Miami of bikini clip. Poodles shed little to no hair and are good for allergy sufferers. Origin The Poodle has been known throughout Western Europe for at least years and is depicted in 15th century paintings and in bas-reliefs from the 1st century. France has taken a claim on the origin, but the AKC gives the honor to Germany, where they say it was used as a water retrieval dog. Other claims have been Denmark, or the ancient Piedmont. What is certain is that the dog was a descendant of the now-extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. The name "Poodle" most likely came out of the German word "Pudel," which means "one who plays in water. They would leave hair on the leg joints to protect them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. The hunters in Germany and France used the Poodle as a gundog and as a retriever of waterfowl and to sniff out truffles laying underground in the woods. The French started using the breed as a circus performer because of the dog's high intelligence and trainability. The breed became very popular in France, which led to the common name "French Poodle," but the French people actually called the breed the "Caniche," meaning "duck dog. In the 18th century smaller poodles became popular with royal people. The three official sizes are the Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle. They are considered one breed and are judged by the same written standard but with different size requirements. Some of the Poodle's talents include: retrieving, agility, watchdog, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Life Span Did You Know? Although the Poodle is the national dog of France, they actually originated in Germany over years ago where they were commonly used as a duck hunter. Their curly coat protected them from the elements and they were bred for their excellent swimming skills, high intelligence, and incredible retrieval skills. The Poodle comes in three sizes — Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Throughout history, this dog breed has served many purposes. From living in the lap of luxury as companions to nobility to working out in the field as a valuable hunting companion to entertaining people in circuses around the world, the Poodle is right at home. Although they are more popular as a companion dog, the Poodle still maintains their athleticism and working dog instincts. Poodles are known for their intelligence, cheerful disposition, and sensitive nature. They are versatile dogs that make great family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their sensitive nature, they tend to be a better fit for older children who understand how to approach and interact with a dog appropriately. These dogs prefer peace and harmony in the household, so very young children that are too loud or rough can stress them out. The Standard Poodle also tends to be quite energetic until they are about two years old and may be prone to knock over small children in their excitement. Standard Poodles also tend to make great watchdogs and have some protective instincts. Without proper socialization, they can become skittish, nervous, and wary of strangers. Making sure any puppy is socialized early and often helps them grow into a confident, well-rounded dog. Standard Poodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their energy level tends to make them better-suited for larger homes with room for them to run. But, they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive the exercise, mental stimulation, and affection that they need. They tend to do well in most climates. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to very hot and very cold weather. These dogs are in-tune with their owners and thrive on human companionship and affection, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Poodles are a relatively healthy dog breed, but there are some potential health concerns to be aware of. Because of their larger, barrel-chested body type, the Standard Poodle is also at risk for bloat. Responsible breeders will screen and test their stock to ensure the genetic propensity for breed-related conditions is not passed along to the puppies. Poodles are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please their owners. They are highly trainable, pick up things quickly, and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are sensitive and in-tune with their owners, they respond best to consistent, positive training techniques focused on rewards and praise. Poodle coats are curly or corded and come in a wide variety of colors. Although Poodles are known for their low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats, their coats still require a lot of maintenance. Keeping your Poodle in a short clip can help reduce daily maintenance, but still requires regular professional grooming every four to six weeks to maintain it. A longer coat requires daily brushing in order to prevent matting in addition to professional grooming every four to six weeks. Regular professional grooming often helps with this as nail trimming should be done monthly, at least, to keep nails from growing too long. Dental care for dogs , like brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, is essential to protecting them from painful dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. You, your dog, and your groomer will thank you for it! Who knows? If you ensure these experiences stay positive, they could even become a bonding time that your dog enjoys. These are high energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation every day in order to be happy and healthy. They love to stay busy and may enjoy running with you, going for a swim, taking trips to the dog park , hiking with you, and more. They also tend to be a good fit for several dog sports, such as agility, dock diving, obedience, flyball, tracking, and more. A fully-grown Standard Poodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. They can be slightly smaller than the usual as the Standard size is denoted by being more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder. A Standard Poodle generally lives years. Featured Standard Poodle Article. What to consider before bringing your poodle home Our Philosophy We believe that standard poodles are loving members of the family. They are excellent companions who are devoted to their people. Poodles have a range of personality traits with varying levels of play drive, retrieve drive, prey drive, and, of course, couch-potato-ness. Most poodles love to play. Average, well-socialized poodles love to go everywhere with their family. The hallmarks of the standard poodle personality are well-rounded athleticism, intelligence, and a will-try-anything attitude that makes for a can-go-anywhere kind of dog. Standard poodles don't shed, are good with with children, and generally interact well with other pets. Just like people, each is unique and comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. Whether it's one of many solid colors, spotted or parti, a brindle, tuxedo, sable, or a phantom pattern, there's a standard poodle for everyone. Poodles need quality time with people and other animals, physical exercise and mental stimulation, quality food, medical care and grooming. Poodles are not outdoor dogs to be left tied up, away from people. Due to their high intelligence and athletic abilities they need something to do, someone to play with, and someone to guide them. If you have any questions about how best to care for your new family member, just ask. We're happy to help! I thought of you years before you even realized. I planned for and cared about your baby long before you started thinking of adding to your family. I worried about your future with that puppy before you knew there would be one. There were hours upon hours spent researching lines for the parents of your puppies. Going over breeder after breeder, choosing not only my pet but looking for a dog that will make you your pet. Worrying if you'd be happy, if I had chosen correctly and your puppy would grow up healthy and happy. Going over puppy after puppy with fellow breeders, running over my program with as many knowledgeable breeders as I can, determined to not miss anything. Tracing lines back as far as I could, learning the ins and outs not only for my knowledge but so that I was informed, prepared to go over every detail with you, to answer the questions that sometimes you don't even ask. Then there's years of watching your puppies parents grow. Loving them and enjoying them as part of my family. Taking them every where I can, training them, socializing them, watching how they fill out. Asking myself I had made the right choice in both of them. Scrutinizing their conformation, how they move, and their temperament. There was the stress of health testing. Praying not only that my babies were healthy but that they had the genes to make your baby healthy. Finally came the time to put your puppies parents together. For the next 63 days I worried, I obsessed, I grew excited. I watched your puppies mom like a hawk. Making sure my baby was ok, monitoring her diet better than I do my own. Concerned that she was getting enough of the right nutrients and that your growing baby was getting the best start possible. I spent hours on the couch, floor, and dog bed with her watching her tummy grow and anxiously waiting. As your baby and mine grew I laid my hands on her tummy and felt the first movements of your puppy. As the time grew close I spent most nights in the nursery with her. Making sure she didn't go into labor without me knowing, in case something went wrong and one of our babies needed help. When labor started my whole life stopped. I spent every second with her. Your baby was born into my hands and I held my breath as I cleaned them up, watching for movement and breathing, cleaning them up, checking them over, and wondering if you'd love them as much as I already did. I helped your babies brother when mom got tired and he was stuck. I cried when your babies sister didn't make it. For the first 8 weeks most of my life was filled with your baby. Watching them grow and making sure I was doing everything possible to make sure they started their lives the right way. Making sure each one was getting enough to eat, enough socialization time, that they were de-wormed and given their shots. I was the first person they saw when they opened their eyes. I spent my weeks playing with them and keeping them safe. I searched for you and interviewed you. As you spoke I tried to read your character. Would you love them as much as I do? Would you bring them in as part of your family? Would you care for this tiny life that I brought into this world that I am responsible for? Some of you were turned away but some of you were welcomed into our family. The day you took your baby home was harder than I'd ever let on. I was excited for you but I was also terrified. Had I chosen correctly? Were you who you seemed to be? My love and worry didn't end there. I thought about your baby regularly, saddened when I didn't get updates, ecstatic when I did. I hoped you were caring for your baby the way I care for mine. I answered your questions happily and answered them again just as happily to your babies siblings new parents. When your puppies sister ate a couch I stayed up that night she was at the vets, waiting to hear that she was ok. When their brothers parents decided he no longer fit in their life I welcomed him home, sorry that I had chosen wrong for him and promised him it wouldn't happen again. I loved your baby first and I will never stop. Our puppies have been placed all over the United States. They adapt easily to any environment and travel well. We have puppies happily living in downtown Atlanta, Nashville, Miami and other large cities. Some of our puppies live in typical suburban homes, others in a rural setting or on the beach. You must fly with your puppy or drive to pick them up in person. We do not ship puppies. The poodle is also regarded as the national dog of France, where it was once commonly used as a retriever. Many poodles love water starting from a young age. Poodle puppies often play in their water bowls. Poodles also drink from the hose and frolic in the rain. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the poodle who doesn't want to get their feet wet, walks on the sidewalk, and refuses to go out in the rain. This poodle stands in the doorway, sniffs the rain in the air, and looks at you to say, "Do we really need to go out today? Sometimes, a poodle's size is described as teacup or royal standard. These terms are used to describe a very small toy or a large standard poodle, but are not official size categories of poodle. In Europe, there is a fourth size, known as a moyen in France meaning medium or a klein poodle in the rest of Europe. Moyen or klein poodles range between 15 and 20 inches at the shoulder. In the United States, a moyen or klein is considered a small standard poodle. At Heart Song Standard Poodles, we breed standard poodles. A standard poodle is a poodle that is 15 inches or over at the shoulder. Standard poodles can range from the smaller 15 inch to the larger 27 inches or more. The majority of standard poodles are between 45 and 60 pounds. Standard Poodles come in a variety of colors and patterns, including red, black, white, creme, apricot, silver, blue, brown, silver-beige, cafe-au-lait, parti, phantom, tuxedo, abstract, brindle, and sable. Some poodles are solid colored, while others are multi-colored. Multi-colored poodles include parti poodles, phantoms, brindles, and sables. AKC does allow both multi-colored and solid-colored poodles to participate in all other events including obedience, agility, rally, and more. Poodles are classified in the non-sporting group in the AKC. UKC allows both solid colored poodles and multi-colored poodles to be shown in conformation. They allow all poodles to compete in all events. Poodles in the UKC registry are classified in the gun dog group. Dogs that are advertised as merle poodles are not full blooded poodles. The poodle breed has no gene for the merle color. Dogs that are merle colored must have been mixed with another breed, even if it was many generations back. Be careful when anyone claims to have merle poodles. Unfortunately, unsuspecting buyers may purchase a merle puppy thinking it is a purebred poodle. They often pay a premium price because it is advertised as a rare color. Heart Song Poodles Blog Everything poodles, articles and tips on how to care for your poodle. Read our latest news.

Website: Arizona Goldendoodles How to Choose of Bernedoodle Breeder in Arizona: When looking for the perfect Bernedoodle breeder in Arizona, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Research: First and foremost, make sure that the breeder is reputable and has a good track record. There are many ways to research this, including reading online reviews and talking to other dog owners who have purchased Bernedoodles puppies from them. Health: Second, you want to make sure that the Bernedoodle puppies are healthy and well-cared for. Ask the breeder about the health of the parents and grandparents, and whether or not the puppies have been to the vet for a checkup. This means they should be introduced to a variety of people, and other animals, which will be beneficial for novice owners. Puppies from a reputable breeder are going to be more expensive than those from a backyard breeder. But, in the long run, a puppy from a reputable breeder is going to be healthier and have fewer behavior issues. Meet the Parents: If possible, you should meet the parents of the puppies before making your final decision. This will give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of temperament and appearance. But if you need more convincing, here are just a few reasons why a Bernedoodle might be the perfect pup for you. Coat: Bernedoodles come in three different coat types: wavy, curly, and straight. Temperament: Bernedoodles are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are also very loyal and affectionate with their families and get along well with children and other pets. Size: Bernedoodles come in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh anywhere from pounds, while Miniature Bernedoodles usually weigh in at pounds. Toy Bernedoodles are the smallest of the bunch, weighing in at 12 pounds or less. Health: Bernedoodles are generally a healthy breed, and are not known to suffer from any major health conditions. However, like all breeds, they can be susceptible to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia. But with proper care and regular vet check-ups, your Bernedoodle should enjoy a long and healthy life. When it comes to finding the perfect Bernedoodle puppy in Arizona, price is often a major consideration. While there is no definitive answer when it comes to how much a Bernedoodle puppy may cost, there are a few things that can help you budget for your new furry friend. However, depending on the specific breeder and bloodline of your puppy, the price could be higher or lower. In addition to the cost of the puppy itself, there are also a few other expenses to consider when bringing a Bernedoodle into your home. These include things like shots, spaying or neutering, and microchipping. All of these costs can add up, so be sure to factor them into your budget when deciding whether or not a Bernedoodle is the right breed for you. Origin Hybrid dogs have been in existence for many years, so the first crossing of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle may have occurred long ago. The breeder who claims to have been the first to intentionally breed Bernedoodles, however, is Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Kennels. Rupke bred her first litter of two Bernedoodles in and has since developed a breeding program around this hybrid breed. It is possible to have a Bernedoodle with more or less than 50 percent of each parent breed in its heritage if a first-generation Bernedoodle is mated with either a Poodle or a Bernese Mountain Dog. These are recommended for those who want a Bernedoode with minimal shedding and are also better for those with more severe allergies to dander. Bernedoodles are playful and affectionate — they do well with children and they love to spend time with their families! This combination is called the F1 Bernedoodle, or a first-generation cross, and it is believed these puppies grow up to be much healthier than both of its parent breeds and will display the most desirable mix of traits. These hybrid fluffy pooches combine the best of both worlds: the intelligence and low shedding coat of the Poodle, with the laid-back yet incredibly loyal nature of the Bernese. The Bernedoodle is a responsive and loving breed. They are intelligent, social, and good with children. These traits make the Bernedoodle easier to train and a good family dog. Bernedoodles have a relaxed temperament but a moderate energy level. Since the Bernedoodle is a combination of two different breeds, the puppies will have a combination of personality traits from each parent breed depending on the amount of each breed involved in the cross. It can even depend on the individual pooch — litter mates that have the same parents might turn out to favor different lineages, some leaning more towards their Poodle or Bernese roots than others. From the Bernese Mountain Dog side, Bernedoodles can be a little wary around strangers so early socialization is important. Toy and mini Bernedoodles also tend to be more energetic and stubborn than standard Bernedoodles. This also means that separation anxiety could end up being a problem for Bernedoodles in case they are not properly socialized. Bernedoodle Health For the most part, the Bernedoodle is a healthy breed. In fact, the creators behind this designer breed claim that elimination of health issues typical for the purebred dogs is what drove them to crossbreed dogs in the first place. However, in no scenario is it possible for someone to predict how healthy any dog will be throughout their lifetime: the best you can hope for is that a proper diet, plenty of exercise and regular visits to the vet will help keep your pooch healthy and happy. Life Expectancy The Bernedoodle is still considered a new breed still being perfected so there is not enough information about their lifespan. While there is no way to say with certainty how long Bernedoodles live, breeders estimate that the average life expectancy of a Bernedoodle is between 12 and 15 years. Of course, there are bound to be slight variations due to the difference in sizes, so a tiny Bernedoodle might live to be 17 years old, while the standard sized are closer to the shorter end of the range. Exercise Requirements The activity level of Bernedoodles varies depending on breeding, but they are typically a moderately active breed. They do love their outdoor adventures and will be more than happy to join you on a hike or your morning jog, but they do not need intensive exercise to stay healthy and happy. With that being said, the Bernedoodle can be a good choice for apartment dwellers provided they have enough space and are willing to take their pet on long walks and to the dog park. This means that Bernedoodles adapt to various lifestyles, including different activity levels. You could be letting them roam about in a securely fenced backyard and maybe play with another canine companion, arrange a visit to the dog park for a game of fetch or simply have a daily walk around the block. The smaller varieties — toy and mini Bernedoodles — tend to be more active than the larger varieties. In any case, a good daily walk should be enough to satisfy the exercise requirements of a Bernedoodle. A good idea is to offer puzzle toys and interactive toys, too. These will keep your pet entertained and offer a challenge for their smart minds. Bernedoodle Coat Bernedoodles come in any combination of white, black, and brown. It is also possible for Bernedoodles to be tricolor or sable — black, white and brown. This color combination is also the most difficult to achieve, and as such, the most desirable. Recently, some breeders have presented a merle Bernedoodle which displays a marbled white and gray pattern on a black coat. Puppies with this coat are very rare and usually the most expensive. Just as Bernedoodles come in different colors according to breeding, they also have different types of coats. Most Bernedoodles have long, wavy coats that shed minimally. Straight-coated Bernedoodles are less common and tend to shed more than wavy or curly-coated Bernedoodles. The goal with crossbreeding these two popular breeds was to create a perfect companion for families of all shapes and sizes. Bernedoodle Grooming The amount of shedding depends on the type of coat your dog has inherited from either parent. Those with a straighter type are prone to shed more, whereas if its coat is curly it will tend to shed less. Brushing somewhat regularly will help to prevent matting. Bernedoodle Training If bred well, the Bernedoodle should be an easily trainable dog because it inherits intelligence, eagerness to please, and a calm demeanor from its parents. As with other breeds, it is good to train and socialize your dog while still a puppy to avoid destructive and nuisance behavior later in life. During the puppy stage Bernedoodles can be a little headstrong, but this tends to lessen as the dog matures and receives training. It will make both of your lives so much easier in the long run.
