Deworming German Shepherds - How Often? Puppies are entirely different however. Also, I deworm my dogs myself. I get the wormer I use from my vet for my particular German Shepherd because it is based on weight of the dog and then I administer it myself. The wormer I use is called Panacur. It comes from the vet in a liquid form and you administer it once a day for 3 days in a row. You can put it on their food or just directly into their mouths which is what I do and you're done. Many vets will give it to you as 3 separate dosages in 3 different syringes all ready to go 1 dosage per syringe but I usually just get it all in one bottle, and 3 empty syringes and then measure it out myself before I give it - but either way is fine. I like it especially because it is good to get rid of lots of different worms all at once such as; hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms and whipworms - and most other wormers on the market only address hookworms and roundworms. So one treatment of the 3 doses and you're done for 6 months! And most GSDs do not seem to have an issue with the taste either. But if you don't want to get the Panacur from your vet you can also order a wormer called Panacur C - Safeguard that is basically the same thing only in dry form to give your dogs. This coat factor comes from the beginning of the breed when the dogs used to start the German Shepherd breed were more "Collie Coated". During the development of the breed and the standard it was determined that this coat was not water proof for the dogs out tending the herds. Also the long hair that grows between the pads on the feet also hindered their ability to do their work in the winter as snow would pack on the hair between their pads. The SV standard did not allow them to be bred, up until just a few months ago. Now Long Coat German Shepherds are allowed to be shown and breed surveyed. So if you have a long coat a long coat carrier and a short coat non carrier you will not get a long coat from that breeding. This because one is a carrier and one is not a carrier, even though both are short coats. Does this mean that all puppies that 2 short coat German Shepherds that carry the long coat recessive gene will only produce long coat puppies? No, they will produce usually more short coats then long, but not always. Example: Onis IS a long coat recessive gene carrier. So when she is breed to Jerry Lee we have long coat puppies. Yes, even though Onis is a short coat German Shepherd as is Jerry Lee, they both carry the long coat recessive gene. Therefore we know that a long coat or two will be in their litter's. I accept deposits on litters once the litter is born so I know I have proper gender and color I may not know coat length until the litter is weeks of age or if gene testing is done. If you are close and have filled out the questionnaire, you can come and visit the litter and leave a deposit. Those further out should consider Priority mail or Overnight. I do encourage you to come and visit the litter and socialize with the puppies. I allow people to come over as long as they have not visited another litter, dog show, stable, farm, zoo, rescue etc within a week of coming over to visit this litter to keep potential diseases out of my home. I am sorry, but I do not ship puppies. You must come to pick up your puppy. I have had a person as far as New Mexico drive in to pick up his puppy, and one couple came in three times for three different puppies over the years from Massachusetts. You also have the option to fly in and take the puppy back with you in a Sherpa bag.I have had people fly in and take puppies back in Sherpa bags from as far west at Washington and California, as far east as Maine, and as far south as Georgia. I have also had a couple puppies that went to Europe that went with their new owner who flew in for them. I will meet you at the Detroit Metro airport in these instances. They tend to be social and thrive on attention and affection, especially from their favorite humans. As a snub-nosed breed, they are particularly sensitive to heat and will need some winter dog products to stay warm when temperatures drop. You can see several examples of our amazing Merle Bernedoodles below. Where does the merle gene come from and how it got in the poodle gene pool? I get this question all the time. I have done a lot of study of the merle gene in the poodle gene pool and believe that it was not caused by introducing another breed into the gene pool but, in fact, it is a mutation that occurred naturally. Merle is probably the most mis-understood and hotly debated dilution gene in the poodle. Many believe it must be a recessive gene because it doesn't affect the appearance of red, apricot and red or diluted colors such as blues and silvers. In addition, it can be hard to see or not evident at all on black and brown dogs cryptic. Not only is its appearance illusive to breeders but it has confused scientists and it is still not completely understood. The merle pattern has been studied many times and the last study released in emphatically stated that merle was caused by a mutation in the gene called SILV or PMEL.The research was believed to be so solid that tests were offered to breeders to identify Merle in their dogs. However, as of March the company who owned the patent for the test, Idexx, stopped offering tests as they discovered the scientists identified the wrong gene. SILV is not responsible for merle. The gene they decided was merle SILV actually turned out to be for a form of piebaldism- not merle. One theory is that piebaldism may be issue when connected to merle- or it may be piebaldism itself that is the issue. Another theory is "The Misidentification Theory. However, it is said - rightly so - that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. Then there is the "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This theory is actually a subcategory of the Misidentification Theory. Merle is what is called a "modifier. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on. The final theory I have is that that merles have been in the breed and that mere is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed, and that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. When I called AKC to register Chuck and asked about the color code to give him they said to give him code and This refers to a a red and white dog with black markings. This leads me to believe that when looking at the color pedigree 5 or 10 generations back you would not know if the dog was actually a merle or a parti meaning merle could be in the pedigree without proper identification. Merle can affect all coat colors. The merle forms of brown and black are usually called "red" though this is not correct; red and merle are genetically different and "blue" as patches of blue are formed throughout the coat. Merle is a dilution gene just like the blue, chocolate in a traditional color but without the color of blue DNA. Merle has its own colours and DNA; a blue merle is a dog who has blue patches on its body, red and some are chocolate or "cookies and cream". Dogs who are recessive red can still be affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or, if the dog is a clear recessive red, are not visible at all. Combinations such as brindle merle exist, but are rare. In addition to altering base coat color, merle also modifies eye color and coloring on the nose and paw pads. The merle gene modifies the dark pigment in the eyes, occasionally changing dark eyes to blue, or part of the eye to be colored blue. Since merle causes random modifications, however, both dark-eyed, blue-eyed, and odd-colored eyes are possible. Color on paw pads and nose may be mottled pink and black. What are the most common Merle patterns in Bernedoodles? How is a Merle Bernedoodle produced? Merle is a term used to describe the pattern of a dogs coat. Merle is a dilution gene, that is, it lightens whatever the coat color would otherwise have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat, but leaves patches of undiluted color scattered over the dog's body. Also, the lightening seems to work primarily on the black pigment in the coat. Merle refers to the pattern in the coat and is not a color as such. The white and gray patterns that appear on a black make them appear to have a blueish cast. These are called blue merles. Merle is a color combination in dogs' coats. Although most breeds that can have merle coats also typically have white markings such as around the neck, under the belly, and so on , and often tan points typically between the white and the darker parts of the coat , these are separate colors from the merle; some dogs do appear completely merled with no white or tan markings. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats.If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life.Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter.If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. Producing merle puppies is something we do very carefully and with a full understanding of coat genetics. Red We love our red Bernedoodles! They can range anywhere from a light strawberry blonde, to a deep red color. Phantom Very similar to tri colored, just less white and more brown! Phantoms can have large abstract white markings on their chest and feet, or no white at all. This change happens because when they are born most of their little hairs have dark tips on them even the hairs that are not truly dark all the way to the base. Then as their coat grows out, and especially after getting their first haircut, all those tips are trimmed off revealing their true color. Chocolates can come in all the same color patterns as their black counterparts listed above. Each pup is uniquely marked! Parti can happen to any of the above colors, and is a coat trait we can test for in the parents. So we always know if there is a chance of parti puppies in a litter. Now that we produce primarily multigens, we do not often have parti puppies. As we combine two different purebred dogs, there are so many possible variations and outcomes! Of course, a Bernedoodle puppy will inherit its traits and characteristics from its lineage. The traditional Bernese Mountain Dog coat features a solid jet black base color with white and rust or tan markings. The tan and rust markings are usually present above the eyes, on the cheeks, on each side of the chest, on the legs, and under the tail. The white markings are found on the muzzle, between the eyes, on the chest, neck, and paws. Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle Colors Poodles, on the other hand, most commonly come in a variety of solid colors, such as black, blue, gray, silver, brown, red, apricot, cream, cafe au lait, silver beige, and white.
