What a great day! He came to us with a birth defect. When he was born part of his right front leg was non-functional. Shortly after birth, he lost that part and ended up with a non-functioning partial limb that limited his activities. After discussing the options for this fearless pup with our veterinarian and orthopedic surgeon, we decided it was best to amputate the limb. He now gets around just like any other puppy, zoomies and all. He is now in his loving home of a previous adopter and is the sweetest, happiest Golden ever! Twelve weeks of strong antibiotics and steroids made him better. Due to his agehe was not able to have surgery until his bones matured and this made him quite crippled. On July 2, he was able to have his first surgery. The vet said it was much worse than expected. A lot of taking out bone, cutting bone, making a new groove and pinning. Also, muscle and tendons had to be cut and re-attached. He was in pain and needed rehab times a day but he was a strong, happy boy. He will never be totally normal but he should not be crippled. He had weeks of rehab and then got to do it all over again with his other leg. All in all, he was in therapy and rehab for almost 5 months. Cody will be at GoldenStock. That way, you can test to see if they have any allergic reactions. The important part is that you end up scrubbing every inch of their fur and skin from head to tail. If you have a nervous dog, make sure to use positive reinforcement techniques, including talking to them in a soothing voice and using treats to reward them for good behavior. If you thought you had to be careful with getting water down to their skin when getting them wet, you need to be even more cautious with the rinsing process.
