Some Labradors are still born with a white patch on their chest and some white in their paws and muzzle. As the dog got more popular chocolate and yellow looking pups were born but most of them were culled at first until they gained greater acceptance in the breed. In each color of the Labrador retriever there is a spectrum of color. Black labs can be a lighter black to dark black. Chocolates can be light brown to dark brown. But Yellow labs have the most noticeable spectrum of color. They vary from a dark red fox red color all the way to white. Also there is a dilute gene that can affect each color as well. If Black Labs have the dilute gene, they have a charcoal color. If Chocolate labs have the dilute gene it can give them a silver color. And if yellow labs get the dilute gene it can give them a slight Champagne looking color that is less noticeable. These three are called Charcoal, Silver, and Champagne respectively. Our labs do not have the dilute gene. The dilute gene is very controversial in breeding circles because some do not believe its a true Labrador trait and therefore is the result of breeding another breed into the line such as a Weimaraner. We are neutral on the subject because the AKC allows these dogs to be registered. Are white Labrador puppies healthy? The short answer is yes. White Labradors by in large are healthy just like the other colors of the breed. There are a few genetic disorders that run in all the colors of Labrador. Blankets, pillows, and towels. The mother GSD and her litter need a quiet place to stay. It should be spacious, clean, and comfortable. If money is not an issue, you may purchase a commercial whelping box and a washable vet bed. But if you want to be thrifty, you can just make use of a clean cardboard box. Just make sure that the box is big enough for your GSD to stretch out comfortably. You may also buy a heat pad. It will provide warmth to the litter. Instead, put the heat pad under the whelping box, with one end on top of the box. Cover it with a towel to avoid overheating. The whelping box should be close enough to an electrical outlet so you can easily plug in the heat pad once you need more warmth for your Litter. Make sure they stay warm by providing a heating pad and lamp. You may add blankets, pillows, towels, or even old newspapers and a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel. Be careful though because puppies might get entangled and suffocate if the blanket, pillows, and towels are not taut. Puppy milk replacer, baby bottle, or feeding syringe If the litter is abandoned or orphaned, ask your vet to prescribe milk formulated for German shepherd puppies. Purchase a baby bottle or syringe for feeding. If you leave newborn German shepherd puppies with their mother, give her the first two days to bond with her litter and feed them. Once you see that your GSD has accepted her litter and is feeding them, you can put the puppies in a box beside their mother. Four weeks of age is even more fun as the puppies keep developing, but the amount of cleaning starts to increase in geometrical progression, and it becomes a full time job to keep the puppies well fed and clean. Some people we have worked with are okay with their puppy mouthing their hand as long as there is no tooth pressure. If you feel the same way, then make that a boundary. But if there is any tooth pressure, a swift and consistent correction will follow. This boundary is stronger and does not give the dog any room for confusion. In fact, they often will understand what your boundaries are but will test that standard against everyone else in the family. Each person needs to set and enforce boundaries. React with firm consistent corrections After you establish the boundary, you now need to react every time your puppy or dog crosses that boundary. Each and every time! There can be no room for confusion. Your corrections must be swift and consistent. Not all dogs react to the same level of pressure. For some dogs, this squeeze and strong words will be all it takes to stop the behavior. Especially if you are consistent in your correction. But some dogs have a stronger or more challenging personality. This will give your puppy a taste of his own medicine since his puppy teeth are sharp and will pinch into his lips or flews. What if the next person that dog bites is a child? Would you be able to live with that? A dog that is allowed to continue harming humans is only one bite away from having to be put down. It may sound harsh, but it is the sad truth. Some people may argue that the dog is unable to understand what they are doing is wrong. This is not based on reality. Dogs are very smart. They can learn to do amazing things and become incredible hunting partners and family companions. But they rarely achieve this potential without an owner who cares enough to set boundaries and enforce them.
