They are full of energy and love to play with their litter-mates and the kids. This is the time that we really focus on socializing them and we even start their paper training. This is when their personalities really start coming out! It is so fun to watch them play with the kids and their litter-mates and observe their new fascination with toys. They have become somewhat accustomed to going potty on pee pads so that when they are out running around the room they often recognize them on the floor and will go potty on them. Though they are fast, active, playful little puppies at this point in their lives, they still are like babies and require lots of sleep probably over 18 hours per day and are still quite fragile. Plastic whelping boxes are lightweight and easier to keep clean than wooden ones, which can harbor parasites and germs. Make sure the box is large enough for the mother to stretch out but small enough to keep her precious puppies close, with easy access for her to get out without the puppies escaping. Clean up the area as much as you can without disturbing them, and leave them to it. But your work, in some senses, has only just begun! You might have two, three, or more, plus their tired mom to look after! However, in some cases, the mother may not naturally take to feeding. Allow enough flow to let them feed easily without it overflowing around their mouth and nose. For the first week, they need to be fed every two hours. This can be extended to three or four hours in the second week, especially if they look healthy and are a good size. Potty Training Like any newborn baby, they will look to their mother for guidance, but you will most likely have to lend a hand. They will not poop or pee of their own accord, and mom has to stimulate this action by licking them. After this, you will obviously have to clean them up. If they are feeding naturally from mom, they will be getting the nutrition they need and protection in the form of antibodies to help fight infection. The bat ears, large bright eyes, stubby tail, compact and muscular body, playful nature and remarkably docile demeanour; some of the innumerable qualities that make the French bulldogs an excellent companion animal. Due to their smaller body size, these dogs make good travel companions as well. Additionally, their intelligence and quick adaptability ensure that they are safe to be let about around infants and old members of the family as well. To these statements, I can attest myself for I have a 4 years old female French bulldog — one of the most brilliant dogs that my family has ever had the privilege to own. However, during these past four years, one major concern surfaced itself time and again to my veterinarian parents: Pyometra. Pyometra is defined as an intrauterine accumulation of pus accompanied by a persistent corpus luteum and failure of oestrus. Apparent failure of the endometrial luteolytic factor or endogenous prostaglandin to cause luteolysis makes bitches appear and behave as though they were gestating. Risk factors for pyometra include increasing age, nulliparity, breed, and exogenous oestrogen or progesterone administration. Spaying Ovariohysterectomy completely and promptly removes the infection, prevents uterine rupture and peritonitis, and prevents recurrence, in most cases. Spayed animals do very rarely develop pyometra in the uterine stump. Even so, ovariohysterectomy is currently considered the most effective and safest treatment. It is thus, a very important disease to be aware of for any dog or cat owner because of the sudden nature of the disease and the deadly consequences if left untreated. While it is observed that this condition may occur in any dog regardless of age and mating history, it is more common in bitches that have not whelped even once throughout their life nulliparous. Therefore, after a proper discussion and consultation with scientific literature, we decided to allow our French bulldog to mate with a healthy adult male of the same breed. Little did we know what was in store for us in the next few months to come. Our dog conceived successfully and started showing some symptoms of gestation such as gradual enlargement of abdomen, quick exhaustion, reluctance to run or play, enlargement of mammary glands, etc. However, she lost her appetite abruptly and refused to eat her meals about two weeks into her pregnancy. As her abdomen rapidly grew in size, her appetite reduced alarmingly. To manage the issue, she was given appetite inducers, liver supplements and shifting of meal ingredients from fish, to egg, to chicken, to pork alternatively, in an attempt to spark her interest. She ate almost nothing. There was gradual loss of condition as her abdomen distended significantly. At merely 30 days of gestation, her general appearance was of a bitch at full term. A general abdominal ultrasound was conducted on the 40th day of gestation and roughly 7 puppies were observed even though the number could be greater since unlike X-ray, the number of foetuses cannot accurately be determined using ultrasonography and we were unwilling to conduct radiography due to radiation hazard. She instead preferred to sit close to walls and furniture and lean for support, thus keeping her thorax elevated than her abdomen to reduce pressure on her diaphragm while breathing. There were a couple of concerns we were ailed with. Since French bulldogs are known to have a narrow pelvic girdle and foetal head size is typically large, normal parturition could lead to lodgement of the head of the foetus in her birth canal leading to dystocia. This is why being a veterinary surgeon; I had made all preparations for a caesarean section. Additionally, on an average, French bulldogs have no more than 5 puppies per litter but in the case of my dog Paris, her litter size appeared considerably larger upon ultrasonography, which could be correlated with her abnormally distended abdomen. On the 58th day of gestation, she displayed vivid signs of labour such as nesting, restlessness, panting and straining. We were alarmed due to her pre-term parturition since there were still days of pregnancy remaining. At pm in the winter evening she delivered her first puppy via normal parturition without incident and continued to deliver 8 more over the next 7 hours and delivered a total of 9 puppies of which one was still-born. It was severely cold and raining outside. She displayed admirable maternal instinct and licked away the foetal membranes from all the puppies enabling them to breathe and stimulated them by licking their faces and bodies until the pups let out their first cries. The puppies were cleaned and stimulated further by rubbing gently with sterile absorbant cotton. Unlike most other breeds of dogs, Paris readily allowed us to handle and care for her pups, trusting us completely to keep them safe. On the first two nights, the puppies were allowed to remain with the mother however; we lost another pup as a result of crushing injury inflicted due to her lack of experience. It was then decided to undertake human intervention so as to ensure the safety of the remaining 7 puppies and avoid such accidents in the future. On the 4th night however, the mother managed to get into the basket housing her puppies, reached in with her mouth and carried out one puppy then took her to her bed. The puppy was licked thoroughly by the mother and was only discovered approximately 4 hours after the incident. By then the puppy was hypothermic and dehydrated. Due to severe dehydration and subsequent hypoglycaemia, she was very weak, unable to suckle milk and twitched in frequent intervals. Intensive care was initiated immediately and the puppy was separated from the rest, kept constantly warm at 39 degrees Celsius, fed artificial milk in intervals of 1 hour. However, not much improvement could be observed. After repeating the procedure thrice, she visibly regained strength and began suckling on the finger showing intent. I continued to feed her the milk replacer at 1 hour intervals and 0. This is an essential step since most puppies at neonatal stage are unable to void faeces and urine independently and require stimulation from the mother by licking or artificially using soaked cotton balls. In the case of Paris, she would tend to lick using excessive pressure perhaps due to her overwhelming maternal instinct, which is why we had to deter her from doing so and took charge of the issue ourselves. From the 4th week, feeding was repeated at 4 hour intervals and subsequently increased to 6 hours at the age of 6 weeks. They are currently 12 weeks old and in the past couple of months, I have put my theoretical knowledge on neonatal care of puppies into practical application. General status of health could be assessed by observing faecal consistency and frequency. Neonates void yellow or brown semi-solid faeces with a seedy appearance at intervals of 2 to 3 hours. Faeces solidify gradually and take the form of small boli in healthy puppies without gastrointestinal ailments and having sufficient hydration. Anaemia was assessed by colour and dryness of the oral mucous membranes, dehydration could be assessed by pulling the skin on the back using thumb and index finger as well as the colour of urine. Healthy puppies void clear, colourless to slightly yellow urine, and dehydrated puppies have dark yellow urine voided in scanty quantities. The first two weeks are very crucial since the puppies were prone to hypothermia and hypoglycaemia if optimal room temperature and feeding schedule is not carefully maintained. Methylcellulose eye drops were instilled at 6 hour intervals for one week to prevent corneal desiccation. The mother resumed feed consumption the morning after her delivery. Her diet was supplemented with multi-mineral and multivitamin syrup Multistar Pet and calcium chew tablets Drools to help her regain optimal health as well as to sustain the high nutritional requirements during lactation. All puppies were vaccinated with Puppy-DP Distemper and Parvovirus at 30 days age considering the facts that Paris missed her vaccination during her pregnancy and a Parvoviral infection was on-going as an epidemic in the city. Additionally, the puppies were kept under complete isolation and I had to place myself under home-isolation since I would encounter multiple Parvo and Distemper cases at my workplace. Poodles and Golden Retrievers are two of the smartest dog breeds, making Goldendoodles highly intelligent and eager to please, which is good news for you! In addition, your Goldendoodle will be easy to train and love to learn, so they make great service dogs. For example, a recent study found that Goldendoodles experienced more dog-directed fear than Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Ensure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day to prevent destructive behavior. Therefore, when adopting a Goldendoodle, try to learn as much as possible about the parents and ensure they have no history of health issues. Goldendoodles are prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia and canine seizures because Golden Retrievers and Poodles are. Additionally, Goldendoodles score significantly higher than their parent breeds in some problematic behaviors, including dog-directed aggression, dog-directed fear, and stranger-directed fear. Most Goldendoodles will be happy with at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, but some might need several hours, depending on their age and overall health. The studio recording allows for more instruments to be incorporated into the sound at any given time without the balance of the track being affected. Their interweaving melodies and rhythms enhance the sense of groove which underpins every Snarky Puppy tune. It was also nice to hear a violinist being featured so prominently on a Snarky Puppy song. Immediately noticeable, is how different the tone of saxophonist, Bob Reynolds is from the rest of the horn section. He enters at the beginning of the track in a call and response section with the other horn players and his sound is so smooth and laid back that it creates a really satisfying contrast, a feeling that defines the track. This is exemplified by the transition between the two excellent saxophone solos. Reynolds takes the first solo, which is fluid and controlled and accompanied only by drums and percussion. One short, textural build up later and the listener is suddenly slammed with a monster of an effects-laden tenor solo from Chris Bullock. This is one of the many elements of the song that contribute to its visceral nature. I am not one for dancing, but this track which I think is one of the best Snarky Puppy has ever produced had me dancing in my seat on a crowded bus, and I had absolutely no shame in doing so. This show features a lot of Maz so trumpet players and fans of his playing should hopefully really enjoy this setlist. Mike starts this off on Moog bass and Justin adds some super sparse, ambient Rhodes accompaniment. Nate uses lots of his chimes and other high-pitched percussion to experiment with texture. McQueen adds some nice tremolo to his unison melody with Bullock on flute. Justin quickly returns to the keys for the acidic sound that makes this track so iconic. He reharmonizes a few of the chords too. Bobby adds some tasty little Moog melodies and Shaun plays some piano stabs and rolls. Maz takes the solo on wah trumpet with some angular lines with lots of variation in articulation. Jamison starts it off with the regular drum groove and McQueen and Justin join in with their melody pretty soon afterwards. McQueen adds some tremolo to the chords. In the B section, Mike changes the bassline to something more staccato and displaced than usual and Jamison and Nate experiment by shifting between quaver and triplet subdivisions of the beat. Chris Bullock takes the solo on tenor sax with a ton of delay. Maz is left alone on flugelhorn to add his accompanying sustained notes. Bullock gets into some really long lines with some nice chromaticism. Justin goes for an ultra lush synth with the resonance filter cranked. Jamo and Nate pick up the energy immediately after the rest of the band stops playing. McQueen and Bobby add some staccato comping before playing the grungy melody. Mike takes a quick bass solo with the envelope filter and octaver and Shaun adds some high pitched, staccato D7 9 chords. Very Meters-esque just before the end. This was a really cool version of Chrysalis. Tarova — Justin starts this one off on synth with the smooth synth sound courtesy of the Prophet 6. So when Bobby, Shaun and Mike start playing for the trading section, there is quite an unusual clash of frequencies! Justin notices and switches to Rhodes for the last few bars before the solo melody. The groove picks up and then leads into the unison section. Shaun joins in on vocoder playing an octave higher than he normally would. Chris Bullock takes the solo and explores displaced and straight-over-swung semiquaver lines with lots of altissimo. The B section following on is more intense than usual due to a stronger bass section. Shaun adds some awesome synth comping during this as well. Nate goes ballistic with the sextuplets. Mike says hello to the audience and gives a shout out to Alina Engibaryan who opened the show. Bad Kids to the Back — Mike tells the story of how he wanted the music video for this song to be recorded through CCTV cameras at a Guitar Center store, but it ended up being too expensive and complex to do so they decided to make the video we all know today with the fancy animations and colorful lighting. This version of Bad Kids features lots more synth than usual and a more percussion-heavy mix. Mike and McQueen are super tight with their unison melody; more so than usual. Shaun takes the solo on Moog and takes his time. Justin and Bobby add some tasteful comping with a nice amount of reverb and delay and Shaun gets more motivic and chromatic. Awesome solo from Shaun. Jamo crushes the drum solo like usual. He uses lots of the snare drum with varying techniques and he gets pretty polyrhythmic. Towards the end, he sets up a New Orleans type groove and then lays out altogether for a moment before shredding with all the energy he has left for the last few measures. Jamison sets this one up with another drum solo back-to-back. He uses lots of the snare drum and gets into some cool shuffle-ly and relatively free, rubato grooves. He picks up the dynamics a lot at the 2-minute mark and starts incorporating lots of the tom-toms. He starts the main groove with a quieter dynamic and McQueen follows shortly after with an embellished take on the melody. McQueen adds some nice effect-y chords to the horn harmonies before ending on a feedback loop before the rest of the band enter. Shaun keeps the synth sound from Bad Kids for the majority of this song which gives it a fresh character. The bassline is doubled by Justin on the now in tune Prophet 6 and it gets funky quickly. McQueen leads into the solo section with a long feedback loop and Maz uses it to start his solo on wah trumpet. Maz gets into lots of out-there phrases with some very long notes adding to the atmosphere. He gets more chromatic towards the end. A lovely tasteful solo from him. There are lots of intricate rhythms going on with various percussive techniques. Justin takes the solo on Rhodes and gets motivic. He displaces lots of the phrases in different parts of the beat. He finds a nice descending phrase and repeats it enough times for Mike to copy him on Bass and use it in his comping. Jamo picks up the groove when Justin gets chordal. Mike too gets chordal on the bass and Justin plays in between his spaces. McQueen gets mega funky with some very subtle comping underneath the flute and muted trumpet melody. This section is extended. The bassline returns to how it was in the album version for the remaining sections and Shaun doubles it on the synth sound from before. McQueen takes a blistering solo on the outro under an ambient keyboard section. He gets into a nice mix of stepwise and intervallic ideas with his beloved Octave Fuzz tone. The outro chord is extended and Shaun adds a nice, rhythmic synth melody as the cherry on top. This version absolutely kills. Justin experiments on the Rhodes with some tasty little melodies. The first solo section gets a lovely, motivic and melodic trumpet solo from Maz on top of a super funky rhythm section. The two of them together hold it down. The second and main solo section sees some nice tremolo accompaniment from McQueen and some delicate fills from Justin on Rhodes. Bobby takes the solo on clavinet under a very sparse chordal and rhythmic base. He utilizes the full range of the keyboard with some insanely virtuosic phrases and expertly sequenced motifs. He turns on the heavier distortion at and starts getting a little more chordal and even more virtuosic. Jamison and Mike tighten up their groove to try and match his energy. Bobby turns on the Digitech whammy pedal for some extreme high-register stuff. Justin changes up some of the Rhodes chords before the horns enter. McQueen ends with some surf-inspired choppy tremolo chords. Mike, or maybe Bobby gets into some tasty synth bass stuff and Shaun plays some rhythmic double-stops with his comping using lots of fourths. The groove and ambience is increased just before the solos with some lush Rhodes comping from Justin and a super tight drum and percussion groove from Jamo and Nate. Maz takes another solo, this time on flugelhorn on top of a super funky solo section. The chorus is awesomely atmospheric with the blend in the washy synth textures and sounds. Mike gets funky before Shaun has a solo on the Moog. He starts right up high in his register and plays some awesome stepwise lines. Mike and Justin hold onto one of the chords a little longer than usual and McQueen adds some beautiful, sparkling clean arpeggios. Shaun continues his magic on the outro with a gentle solo on both Moog and his main keyboard switching from synth to a regular electric piano sound. He teases the audience by playing a fragmented version of the outro melody which typically signals the end of the tune. Xavi — Mike gives a polyrhythm masterclass before this one. Things start pretty regularly but Justin adds some rhythmic synth chords to the bassline. The B section is even more lush than usual with every keyboard being used! Shaun uses the same synth sound from before; it appears to be a winner. Chris McQueen takes an experimental first solo with lots of percussive techniques, whammy bar shenanigans, dissonant open strings, non-diatonic sequenced phrases and then some more traditional forms of guitar playing with some funky chordal playing. Bullock switches from tenor to soprano saxophone for his nice extended solo and he starts right out there before bringing it back home with some motivic pentatonic licks. The audience gets a few bars to test their clapping Madison was a bit messy! Bullock sticks with the soprano sax. Justin takes a polyrhythmic Rhodes solo possibly hoping that the audience will pay attention and learn! The outro is very high energy and features lots of clavinet and synth bass. Mike says thank you and introduces the band. Even Us Encore — A pretty mellow ending to an energetic show. McQueen delicately hybrid-picks, Shaun adds some subtle embellishments to the piano melody and Bobby adds some very subtle but very tasteful organ comping. After the first melody, Mike plays some simple melodic lines with his delay for a change. Jamison and Nate pick up the groove and Justin adds some ambient Rhodes chords. This piece slowly builds up and up before the enthusiastic second section at a slightly faster tempo. Bobby changes up his Moog accompaniment and Chris Bullock switches to soprano saxophone instead for the horn harmonies. The solo section sees a super melodic and middle-eastern inspired solo from Bobby on the Moog. He gets crazy with the pitch bend before picking up the pace and weirdness. He goes 8-bit towards the end and the rest of the band shifts into top gear. The solo finishes with some gentler and super washy drumming from Jamison before leading into the unison piano and guitar outro melody. A beautiful, high energy version of this amazing and typically very mellow tune.
