And every shoebox, every discarded Manhattan Mini Storage vessel had the potential to change my life. By the time they were fully grown, they would follow me down the streets of SoHo, off-leash. In reality, I was deeply dog-less. My first and worst pet was a newt that choked to death on a bad worm. Next came a hairless cat my mother bought on Greene Street. We lived in what was essentially one big room, on Broadway. My mother had been the proud owner of Cindy, a shepherd-collie mix with serious aggression issues and a pathological obsession with Ritz crackers. At the age of six, my mother was both her captor and her protector. When it was really hot, he liked to run to the riverbank and roll in dead eels. He survived a German-shepherd attack in which he lost part of an ear. Both these dogs seemed to me like outcasts, kooks, pains in the ass who the adults secretly wished would just succumb to their own vices already. When I was fifteen, I took the box-of-puppies fantasy into my own hands. Walking down the main drag of Brooklyn Heights, where we now lived, I stopped to pet a tan mutt, the mascot of an animal-rescue group that had set up a booth at the corner of Montague and Hicks. There were several girls and a man. I do remember, though, that what came next was a very bad afternoon. It involved my dreams coming true and the empty dread that often follows that experience. I climbed into a van with Elias Koteas, who told me that there was a pit-bull mother dead in a box! Just think of the puppies—three of them, he had said, their bodies cold, starving. In the van, one of his colleagues, a silent frizzy-haired woman, filled dog bowls with dirty water. I could hear it sloshing as we rumbled down Atlantic Avenue. It was dusk by the time we reached the parking lot. It had started to drizzle. Elias Koteas told me to follow him, and I did, to a shipping crate in the corner of the lot. I peered in. They were barely puppies. More like kidney beans, slick and cool, eyes still sealed shut. They whimpered, but quietly, no louder than baby birds. Elias Koteas urged me back to the van. I wandered for blocks, the puppies hidden in my orange parka. I saw a laundromat and went inside to get warm. Someone noticed the puppies and suggested that I stuff them into the socks without mates sitting atop a dryer, which I did. The office was just closing, but I opened my coat and flashed the receptionist my puppies, like a freelance salesman on Canal Street, and she quickly ushered me in. The vet was a young, sweet man. Definitely Jewish, which is something I care about only in times of crisis. He checked each dog for a cleft palate and explained that I had to feed them every two hours, and that I should rub their anuses with a hot cloth to express their bowels. It never occurred to me to ask whether the vet might keep them there, at the office, where the staff was better equipped for transient pit-bull infants than a fifteen-year-old girl might be. After all, my parents were on a trip to California and my sister, Grace, was only nine. On the walk home, I named them—Uno, Bruno, and Devo. Imagine how lively our house would be when we had three grown pit bulls! I presented them to the babysitter, who reacted with the only appropriate emotion: horror. I was too old for a babysitter but still too young to be trusted alone with Grace. The first night, I woke up every hour on the hour, heated the bottles, rubbed the anuses. It was the weekend, so I had all the time in the world to spend with them. But by the end of the second afternoon I was an Octomom-style mess. She lived in Bay Ridge and was agoraphobic, she explained, so there was no way she could meet me to collect the puppies. Besides, she said, she had no room at all. I waited until my father got home, then made him do it, but I refused to join my family in the car, claiming that it was too painful a goodbye. While they were gone, I holed up with a boy I vaguely liked who had a very chapped lower lip. We did, eventually, get a family dog. I was very invested in him for a short while, until I started watching Criterion Collection movies and eating meat and getting generally more excited about human company. The misfit child no longer needed a companion, and the terrier was ignored, like the Velveteen Rabbit. Nothing about my life these days makes me an especially good candidate for having a dog. I have issues waking up. I am one step away from doing that awful rom-com thing where a New York City working woman with limited space but unlimited pluck fills her oven with sweaters and shoes. I also realize that writing about dogs is a very tricky business. Or perhaps your words will have the droopy intelligence of a Thurber dog. The same caveats apply to conversation about dogs. Just discussing your dog can be as tiresome and offensive as talking about the weather, your own dreams, or the newest wrinkle in your married sex life. At least when people talk about their children, there is a chance that the kid will grow up to be President. After what feels like decades of making ill-advised forays into Spartan Chinatown living rooms and pretending to enjoy wine, I have met someone I love and respect, and I want to make decisions that honor and consider him. It would be a mistake to create a situation that compromised his comfort or made him less likely to squeeze me all night long. My boyfriend is allergic to dogs. Nevertheless, the itch returned last year, when, during an extended existentialist spin-out, the same family dog I had abandoned so many years ago dragged himself to my side and refused to leave. Suddenly, I find myself Googling dogs, looking into their dumb dog faces, reading about which foods will poison them grapes, chocolate, some sugarless gums and which celebrities love them Glenn Close. I imagine how much better everything would be with a dog. Walks to get the paper or a bagel. Long car trips, a wild head of Einstein-y fur in my lap. Sitting on the couch, reading a book, and occasionally flicking his ear with my toe. The rescue people dump his tags and toys into a plastic evidence bag, as if he were leaving prison. It should be noted that this place is an entirely professional operation. Quiet, limp as a sack of laundry, he kisses me softly whenever he has the chance. Everyone tells me how lucky I am. Friday, I drop him at day care. That afternoon, my sister breaks up with her girlfriend. I tell her she should sleep over, and she agrees. We all go to dinner and then pick up Lamby, who bounds out of day care and into the sub-zero night to greet us. I am lucky. But the minute we arrive home it gets weird: Lamby picks up a stuffed toy in his mouth and shakes it hard, as if to break its neck. My boyfriend reaches his hand out to calm him and Lamby lunges, biting him. In the bathroom a little while later, we are brushing our teeth when Lamby saunters in, calm, like your college roommate the day after an acid trip, acting like everything is normal. I promise. He bounces slightly, shocked, then curls his tail around one crooked leg and heads for the front door, where he barks loudly at no one. At bedtime, I shut Lamby in the living room with my sister, who needs the comfort, but, a moment later, it starts: the sound. Something between a sob and a siren, it is how Lamby expresses a doleful emotion that he experiences roughly twice a day. My boyfriend nods, a good sport with a long red scratch on his forearm. Lamby trots in, does several laps around the room, then stretches across the foot of the bed. You know, a creature. That might bite my feet. What have I done? We had such a nice life. I cling to my boyfriend and pull my feet up close the way I did when I was a little girl and thought alligators lived at the bottom of the bed, waiting to snap. Finally, everything settles. It seems as though we could sleep this way every night and even come to love it. What was I so anxious about? A siren wakes me at 3 A. Lamby stands, ready to fight. I kneel over her and she shows me the offending text message. Lamby makes himself busy, circling her, placing a spitty chew toy on any exposed skin he can find. Once she calms down, he does, too. On the arm of the couch. This is where we will stay. But any attempt on my part to be alone—meditating, showering, walking out into the hallway to dump trash down the chute—results in that same siren sound. Sometimes he takes a break to flash his erection at me, red as a sunburn and made even more vulgar by the jaunty bandanna the groomer has tied around his neck. At night, he conks out around ten. My building skews old. So when an ambulance pulls up to our door I never panic. Lamby does. One night, an ambulance is parked outside from 3 A. I try shutting the blinds. Covering his ears. Pushing him out of my bedroom. The ambulance leaves, but Lamby starts again when the woman below me coughs, a deep weak rumble that I often mistake for male sounds of sexual pleasure or the evening news. At A. Meet Our Dogs Our dogs are more than just pets — they are family! Our dogs grow up in a loving, family oriented environment and are socialized from a young age. All of our moms and dads have passed genetic testing specific to their breed. Nora is just a happy girl with a happy heart and she passes this on to her sweet puppies! She loves to be loved and gives it right back! Margot is a Bernese with a big heart! Ivy lives with friends who have been guardians for several of our girls. They describe her as sweet, quirky, and the biggest lap dog ever! Ivy insists on being close to her people, preferably touching! Bebe is goofy and affectionate, loving and silly, very much a Bernese. She is so engaged and careful with her babies, an adorable dog and Mama through and through! She is a talker like her Mama, loves the family bunny, and adores her family. Millie loves to learn and is proud of her accomplishments. Millie makes her guardian family laugh and the favorite part of her day is when the whole family is together! Every one of these girls truly made the world a better place and we are so grateful to each and every one of them! As a full time Breeder, you have to have a lot of dogs. We usually breed our dogs when they are around 18 months old, and we will breed a maximum of 3 times. If you think about that, as soon as a Mama has her first litter you need to have a new puppy in the line up so she is ready for her first breeding as your 3 year old girl is retiring. As a result we quickly had a house full of retired dogs - not a good business plan! We buy the dog, pay for all testing and medical care, but she lives with another family. All of our guardians live very close to us and we give them all the support they need. When the girl is ready to have a litter, she comes to our house to have her pups and stays with us until the puppies are weaned, usually about six weeks. Of course their guardian families come to visit too! After 3 breedings, the dog is spayed and she officially becomes the guardian families forever dog! Scissors Hot glue gun Paint your wood box and let dry. Give it another coat. Once that is dry, coat your valentine box with Mod Podge and let dry. This is optional, but I think a perfect Mod Podge formula for this is the Sparkle. It will be the perfect bling for the holiday! Cut the pug head out of the foam based on the colors in the pattern. Place the foam pieces on a piece of thicker paper, foam, or even a cereal box. Glue or hot glue the pieces down. Add the wiggly eyes with hot glue as well — plus the nose and tongue. Once your pug face is complete, cut out the head and glue it to the front of the box, right below the clasp leaving the top unglued. The clasp should be able to operate behind the head. Cut out one large hot for the top of the box — and several smaller hearts of various sizes to add to the rest of the box. Then glue the rest of the hearts on the box — and add little accents to the hearts with the Sharpie. Let dry before using. Kids can place the box on their desk and let the Valentines fill it up! I love that you can use it year after year, and this cute little box is great for gifts or candy, too. It took a couple of hours to make and we also made a big mess, but it was worth it! When I was a kid, I remember covering an empty oatmeal container with pink construction paper and gluing on red construction paper hearts. Now kids come to school with elaborate creations that would make Pinterest proud if it were capable of feelings. When she found a cute little puppy box I thought it would be pretty simple to create. Then we spent a Sunday afternoon crafting our puppy. It ended up being a fun bonding experience. Yes, there were some frustrating moments as you would expect when working with a pre-schooler. But all in all, it went well and I think it will be a fun memory for her. We made a puppy collar of ribbon and used glittery stickers to spell out my daughters name: White fake fur was the perfect thing for making this little doggie! Purple and mint green tulle was turned into a fluffy tutu, just perfect for the girly little pup. We used ribbon to make a leash and jazzed it up with stick on crystals: Sooooo much hot glue was involved in this project! The dogs face was made with little craft eyes, white felt for the snout, black felt for the nose, and a pink felt tongue. It turned out better than I thought it would. It will be here before we know it!! Two string mops refills. I got mine at Home Depot but you might be able to find them at the dollar store. One shoe box for the body make sure the box is white, wrapped in white paper or painted white. This is going to be the head of your puppy. Cut a rectangular hole big enough for valentines to go into into the lid of the shoebox near the back of the head with the box cutter. You will want to cut across the body, not down. Place the lid onto the shoebox. This is the body. Take one mop refill and get ready to place it on top of the hot glue. Place the mop refill on the hot glue. It should hang down to touch the work surface. Give your puppy a haircut so the strings just touch the surface. Set excess strings aside. Be sure not to cover the rectangular hole we left for the valentines to go in. Create a tail out of the excess you cut off of the head refill by gathering the seam together and hot gluing the ends together. Then hot glue the tail into place on the back of the puppy. Next, to cover the thick seams of the refills, take some of the extra strings and glue down the seams until satisfied. Using more of the excess strings and hot glue, fill in around the body bottom of the box like the photo below. These medium multi-generation Australian Labradoodle puppies were born on October 20th, and we are excited to show you all their unique traits. Labradoodles are known for many different things, including their variety of colors and patterns. The Blonde Brownies are what we call a rainbow litter. That means all the puppies in the litter are different colors and patterns. Spirit is actually an apricot, but shows as cream. However, she carries genetics for all the different colors. That means, depending on which stud we pair her with, we get a different variety of colors and patterns. In this litter, we have: sable, parti, phantom, and a tri. Those are all rare colors within the Australian Labradoodle world. This litter has another unique feature; it is what we call a dual-sired litter. In a dual-sired litter, there are two possible fathers. We had planned for Spirit to honeymoon with Trip. Trip is a young rookie, this was his first honeymoon. So we called Hombre as backup. Hombre has lots of experience and we knew for sure we would be able to give all the families on this list a puppy. At about three and a half weeks of age, we will do a DNA swab and send it off to the lab. .Then the lab will confirm parentage for us. Results will come in about a week later and we will know who belongs to which daddy. Spirit herself is very relaxed. Part of this is from the pre-pregnancy and pregnancy. Right now the puppies are all blind. Their ears will open after their eyes, usually around the three week mark. Spirit looks after that for them. Feeding eight little faces like this is a lot of work. She has some homemade chicken in addition to her usual raw food. We like to ensure the puppies know that people are safe from day one. We do a couple of things with them each day to solidify that people are good. We hold the puppies close to our neck and we let them snuggle in. We also talk while we hold them so that they get the vibrations from our chest. We also make them just a little bit uncomfortable each day. A phantom has markings that are similar to a Doberman or a Rottweiler. The tan is on their legs, on the side of their face or on their chest. She also has white. So that makes her a particularly unique girl. Peach This little girl is a parti dog. This is another unique marking of Labradoodles. A parti is two colors. This girl is brown and white. She has gorgeous big white ruff around her neck and she has some pretty little white markings on the sides of her hind legs and then the cute little white tip on her tail. She has beautiful totally symmetrical markings on her face. But he is an extreme parti. By an extreme, we mean that most of their body is one color and their markings are made up of their second color. So this guy has black markings on his head, with a mostly white body. He has a lot of white on his face and then he has black on his bum and on his tail. He has a really interesting tail pattern as well. Normally with a parti you get a tail with a white tip, but this guy has a swoop of white across his black tail. Purple She is the only puppy in the litter that is solid.
