Another element to consider is that there are 2 types of Chihuahua: The short coat most popular and the long coat. When creating a Chihuahua Poodle mix, it is the short haired Chihuahua that is most commonly used as the sire. Even though the Chi is very tiny, one must know that the size of the puppies can never be predicted. Coat color cannot be known in advance, as well. However, if 2 dogs of the same solid color are bred and when looking at pedigree, if those solids are shown though the past 3 generations, one can have more assurance as to the color of the puppies…. For example a tan Chi with a tan Poodle. If one is able to look back through 5 generations, this is even better. We must note, that as Poodle experts, we along with the AKC and the Poodle Club of American do believe that mixed breeding should not be done. Because each time it is, the Poodle line loses a bit of its strength. It is only through careful breeding that the Poodle line can continue to be perfected and strengthened. However, to be fair to both sides on this issue, the American Canine Hybrid Club argues that many of the breeds we know of and love today, are a direct result of cross breedings in history… were it not for this, we would not have many dogs that are so popular. While this may seem like a minor distinction, it does prevent the Chihuahua Poodle Mix from competing in AKC-sanctioned events. For those looking to purchase a dog that can compete in agility or obedience trials, the Poodle Chihuahua mix may not be the best choice. Poodle Chihuahua Mix Appearance Poodle Chihuahua mixes typically have a medium-sized build, with a long, slender snout and large ears. They come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, white, and cream. They usually have a curly or wavy coat, which may require regular grooming. The height of a Poodle Chihuahua Mix can range from 6 to 9 inches, and the weight can range from 4 to 8 pounds. As a designer breed, the exact height and weight of the Poodle Chihuahua mix can vary depending on which parent breed they take after more. Chi-Poo Temperament Chihuahuas and Poodles have very different temperaments, so the temperament of a Chihuahua Poodle Mix can vary depending on which traits he inherits from his parents. What are the main characteristics of the Chipoo? Crossbreed dogs, like The Chi-poo or Wapoo are no more likely to inherit health problems than purebred dogs; in fact, it is believed they may actually be stronger as they are adding more variety into the gene pool. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent. The characteristics of the Chipoo are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of each parent, the environment, and the quality, type, and amount of training and socialization. The Chipoo dog coat: A short-haired Chihuahua is the usual dog in the Chipoo mix, with its moderate shedding, smooth, straight-haired coat, while the Poodle has a wiry and stiff, wavy coat that sheds less. Poodle—mix dogs, such as the Chipoo were initially crossbred, in the United States, to be hypoallergenic and be suitable for people with dog hair allergies; it had mixed results. Loyalty and companionship The Chihuahua Poodle mix breed will become very attached to its family and especially the master. Reputation: The Chihuahua and the Poodle are both intelligent and sociable dogs that are not known to be aggressive. However, they are known to bark at strangers and other dogs they see as a threat to them or their families. Their size and non-aggressive temperament make them an ideal house pet for any experience of a dog owner, in any type of living accommodation. The Poodle mix is quieter and more reserved than the Chihuahua parent, but both are known to bark when startled or challenged. The Chipoo will be playful and full of energy so be prepared, if you get one, it will expect you to play with it and to have sufficient exercise. Popularity: This Chihuahua and Poodle mix, the Chipoodle, is not the most popular of the designer poodle mix dogs; yet their parents rank as No 6 the Poodle and the No 35 the Chihuahua , in the AKC list of most popular dogs. Perhaps this mix is not as well-known as the other Doodle-dogs and in time could rise in popularity as its parent breeds have. Trainability: When both parent breeds are intelligent and easy to train the Chihuahua Poodle mix should be too. A Chipoo puppy may be tiny but it will be full of energy and high spirits. It will get excited and just want to play and run around, so it should be obedience trained and socialized early. The size of this small dog makes it delicate and vulnerable in play and handling, especially with young children. Therefore, it needs to learn control and understand voice commands, and know when to avoid a situation that might endanger its safety; especially when outdoors in public places or dog parks while playing with other dogs, or boisterous children. This Poochi is very active and needs to be kept occupied to stop boredom and from getting up to mischief; chewing, barking or destroying things. Positive reinforcement and small treats work best for this little pooch, as it likes to please and be praised. It will enjoy and need working challenges incorporating mental and physical stimulation. Socialization: A Chipoo puppy needs exposure to different situations and people early, and practice leaving it alone to help it manage its feelings of separation anxiety, but with you close by. This puppy does not like being left alone for long periods of time and will yap, and may annoy the neighbors! Early socialization and discipline are needed for any active mixed breed dog that likes to be protective of its loved ones. Despite its small size it will be fiercely protective and bark and try to guard its family in the company of other dogs or strangers. Purpose: It will just want to play and hang out with you. It does not have a prey or hunting instinct but it will get bored easily and want to be kept stimulated. In return, it will offer you its love, devotion, and companionship. Behavior: A Chipoo is smart and energetic despite its small size. Obedience training needs to begin early in the puppy years. It will need early leash training as it needs to learn to control its excitement outdoors. It will be naughty if it feels it is not getting enough attention. Physical Characteristics of the Chi-poo This small pooch is friendly, full of energy, and is very sociable. For Females up to lb 1. Temperament: A Chipoo is not known to be aggressive, but it can be mouthy with other dogs and strangers. How should you train a Chi Poo? A Chipoo is intelligent and active and needs to be trained early. You will need patience as the Chipoo can be quite a handful and at times stubborn or moody. Positive reinforcement and reward-based training work best, but never aggressive treatment. Types of training required: obedience, discipline, agility, and socialization. So, if you are not going to use a professional dog trainer: 1 Develop your basic command words: Find keywords such as Stop, Sit, Down, etc. You will have to lock the cage in the early days so it knows it can sleep there and be transported in it. There are products available to help, such as mats and odor sprays to attract puppy go to the same spot each time 4 Walking on a leash — this Poochi is playful and full of energy so early leash training is recommended. Also, practice voice commands and road safety awareness firmly but not harshly. Health problems and health issues Although mixing breeds can often minimize health issues, the Chihuahua Poodle mix could still suffer from certain hereditary health problems from both parent breeds, such as: Luxating Patella — dislocated kneecap — A congenital condition that affects the kneecaps often causes dislocation or loosening of the kneecaps and extreme pain and affected mobility. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is a genetic condition where the retina in the eye degenerates and it can lead to vision loss if not diagnosed and treated early. Other eye problems include: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Dry Cornea or Overactive tear glands — watering eyes from blocked or narrow tear ducts; as a result of swelling, or inflammation and the tears are unable to drain away and will build up in the tear sac. Its eyes need to be wiped often. Other health issues include Cardiovascular Heart problems , Dental problems due to their very small jaws , Obesity as they like to eat a lot , and Allergies — dry ears and dry skin conditions and low blood sugar levels.

How Is Skylit Different? There are a number of ways that Skylit Labradors are different from other Labradors and breeders out there. Each of their pedigrees was unique. Several were the sons or daughters of show Champions. Others came from strong working lines. Skylit Labradors pedigree lines are unique to New Zealand. At Skylit Labradors I have the ability to produce a range of different shades — the darkest and lightest of yellows, the traditional black, chocolate, and yellow colours, as well as dilute versions of those colours. I do not breed strictly for colour but am aware that people have personal preferences. Health, temperament and fit-for-purpose are my primary focus with colour next on the list. I love developing their special traits and sharing their abilities with the community. I have a purpose and goal for each litter that I produce as well. That purpose may be to produce a litter of fantastic family members. Or it may be to produce great candidates for therapy or service dog work. It may be to produce a litter that will work well for active families, competitors or weekend hunters. It may be to find the next best scent dog candidate. I look for the natural tendencies in my Labs… what they gravitate toward… and that is where they are likely to excel. This in turn allows me to make better matches for those looking to add a Labrador puppy to their family. Life at Skylit If you want a Lab that will live outside or in your barn, then by all means, get a puppy that started life outside or in a barn. If you plan on keeping your dog in a kennel, then be sure that its parents were raised that way as well. Skylit Labs begin life immersed in both dog and human family life. They begin life in our shared home on 40 acres in the Manawatu. The dogs spend their days lounging around and playing with each other, me or friends but they also go on playdates, hang out at cafes, have visitors over, plod around the property, go for swims in the pond, lay by the fire, curl up on the couch, go on road trips across country, have sleepovers, and regularly run often boring errands with me. Health Testing I am a strong advocate of health testing. My Labs are genetically health tested for the common diseases found within the Labrador breed as well as several other diseases. Their elbows are also assessed by OFA. Hip and elbow evaluations help me to ensure I am making good breeding choices and reducing the risk that offspring will develop hip or elbow dysplasia due to a genetic predisposition. Note: No breeder can guarantee that their puppies will not develop hip or elbow dysplasia as both conditions can be caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Breeding for good health is a non-negotiable rule for each of my litters I plan. What that means is that I feed what I feel is the most applicable species appropriate diet for canines — raw meat, bones and organs. They primarily eat beef, chicken, fish, lamb, duck, venison as well as the occasional quail, rabbit and wallaby. They are fed twice each day. Raw feeding plays a major role. The Puppy program Pre-Birth Producing a great litter begins long before the breeding takes place. It begins with properly assessing your dogs to ensure they are fit to breed. Are they healthy? Have they fully recovered from any previous pregnancies? Are they physically mature? Are they mentally mature? What are their weaknesses? What are their strengths? Do the potential mother and father compliment each other? The care of the mum-to-be before and during her pregnancy is paramount to a successful whelping. I have been blessed with wonderful mums and I hope that continues for as long as I breed! By taking the best care of them, they take amazing care of their babies. My key role in the early days is to support the new mum. That way she can do an exceptional job whelping, raising and nurturing her babies as life intended. Weeks Once the babies are born, their weight is tracked daily for the first two weeks to ensure proper growth. Each puppy wears a different colour collar so that I can be aware of each puppy individually. This helps with things such as fireworks, children crying, doorbells, thunderstorms, and much much more. Around 3. At 4 weeks of age the puppies begin separating themselves from mum and start exploring the outside. At this age the door is removed from their cubby so that the puppies can come and go as they please to use their potty boxes or to begin exploring outside. Weeks By 5 weeks of age the puppies are spending full days outside in their puppy play yard. Their mum is primarily nursing them in the afternoons and I am providing meals for them. Typically my mums finish nursing around 6 weeks of age but the puppies still have much to learn before they are ready to leave Skylit! This consists of my removing the potty boxes and putting the door back onto their cubby. Now at night time they are placed into their cubby and I will let them out through the night as needed. Within nights the puppies are sleeping through the night without needing to go out and they are alerting me if they DO need to go out to go toilet during the night. At this point I begin separation conditioning by initially splitting the litter into two cubbies and then three cubbies etc. I have found this process makes the departure from Skylit so much easier on the puppies AND their new families. Puppies are settled in their crates which is especially important for those puppies that fly to their new families. Other key events happening during this time period include a variety of visitors interacting with the puppies, exploration walks around the pasture and main house yard, as well as water play in the puppy pool. The puppy play yard adjoins the adult dog yards so the puppies frequently have doggy visitors as well. The puppies have their full vet checks based upon when they will be leaving Skylit and that involves their first car trip into town and lots and lots of cuddles at the vet clinic! Puppy Placement The Right Fit Labs vary considerably in their build, energy level and natural tendencies. Some live to retrieve, others to swim, and still others to cuddle up on the couch. Others are happy-go-lucky. Some are incredibly smart and love to learn. Others… not so much. Some are food driven. Some are toy driven. Some have big thick blocky bodies and some are built like extreme athletes. Like humans, each Lab is an individual. There are some traits and tendencies that tend to pass from parents to offspring. There are also signs of what that puppy may be like as an adult that begin developing from a very young age. As a Breeder I strive to get to know my puppies and look for how they are similar or different from their parents or other puppies I have raised. I have an application process for my puppies. They are not placed on a first come, first served basis. Instead I look for families who will embrace that puppy as a member of their family, loving and caring for it as fiercely as they would any family member. But my diligence is to your benefit. If approved for a Skylit Labrador, you have an advocate at your side that will do all in her power to ensure your puppy is a good fit for your family. I made a promise to my girls when I started breeding that I would only ever place their puppies in environments that would be at least as good, if not better than, the life I could give them if they remained here. New Family Guide In order to help each new family through the process of adding a Skylit Lab to their family, I have developed a step-by-step guide for my families. As new questions arise, I continue to add to the New Family Guide so that it can hopefully be a wonderful resource for each new Skylit Lab family! While the Sales Agreement may change slightly depending on the litter, the terms and conditions are fairly consistent. This is to protect the integrity of my program. I have invested countless hours and money into building my breeding program. It requires little to no thought and very little if any investment to throw two dogs together in a backyard and produce a litter. That is not how I breed and those are not the type puppies I produce. Breeding in that manner can do irreversible damage to the reputation of my program and its future success. If a family should desire a puppy from their Skylit Lab, I encourage them to reach out to me and we can look at whether it may be possible in partnership. This is due to several of my foundation Labs carrying the Dilute gene. While other kennel clubs around the world are more accepting of this gene, Dogs NZ has chosen to not permit the registry of dilute-coat-coloured Labradors nor any litter that had the genetic potential to produce dilute-coat-coloured Labradors. I do not breed to any Labradors that are not kennel club registered unless they were born here at Skylit and I can therefore be assured of their pedigree. If at any time you can no longer maintain or no longer wish to maintain custody of your Skylit Lab, they are to be returned to Skylit. They will either remain at Skylit for the rest of their life or should I happen to find a well-suited home for them, I will place them. Prior to that, I had never seen the shade, nor understood its origins. The more I found out about the shade, the more I became driven to try and integrate the shade into my breeding program. My aim is not to exploit the colour or to merely breed for colour alone. I am carefully selecting breeding partners for the girls that will improve type irrespective of colour. Over time, I hope to see the red shade accepted and represented in NZ homes and also in both show and field. Below is information about the fox red shade. I invite you to read it and then make up your own mind on this delightful shade of our labradors. In the early years of the breed development, fox red or dark yellow was the original yellow shade of the Labrador retriever. The original yellows were in fact called Golden until the British Kennel Club came to register them. They argued that "gold" was not a colour, so yellow they became. One only has to look at the first yellow Labrador ever recorded , Ben of Hyde, in , sired by Major Radclyffe's "Neptune" out of Lord Wimbornes "Duchess", both blacks to see this original shade. These early labradors were either dark golden or butterscotch tinged with red. Until and even after World War II, dark yellow was the norm. As the years passed, the lighter labradors became far more popular and people have lost sight of the true origin of the colour. Even today, it seems the lighter the shade of yellow, the better. Some breeders are now advertising White Labradors when in fact there is no such thing within the breed. They are following the trail of the lighter the better. Due to the lack of interest and popularity of the darkest shade of yellow in the labrador standard, it had all but disappeared. It was this interest that led to the rebirth of the fox red. In his litters he seemed to always produce very dark yellows. It was one of his granddaughters that produced the great CH Wynfaul Tabasco, the father of the modern fox red Labrador. Not only was he a stunning red dog but he had excellent conformation. He became the only modern fox red Show Champion in the UK. The resulting litter was all fox red proving the Crooks theory of fox red to fox red will produce all fox red. In almost all fox red pedigrees of today, a little research will show this dog in the pedigree multiple times. Sally bred her to Red Alert which resulted in an all fox red litter. Within the litter, another special boy appeared, Kelleygreen Kardinal. Many of todays fox red labradors can look back in the pedigree and see Kardinal one or two generations back. Another dog, while not being particularly famous himself, passed his influence on into the red bitch lines of both Kellygreen and Keepsake, was the fox red Scrimshaw Placido Flamingo. Tenor inherited the fox red shade from both sides of his pedigree, his grandfather, English Field Champion Venture of Brattonsplash and while his Dam was dark yellow, she had the red shade behind her. Tenor passed the fox red "C" Allele on to his offspring. Not only did he give his shade to his decendants but also his wonderful laid back temperament. This big red dog was everything a Labrador should be, a true gentleman in every sense of the word. It is an uphill battle for several different reasons. It has gone through a dry spell for the last 30 years. I feel it is very sad that the deep golden colour is now rarely seen, and wish we could get it back again". Mrs Jacqueline Barlow wrote in her Labrador Quarterly Article, Gundogs, The true Yellow in the Spring Issue, " They are having trouble with judges in England who have preconceived ideas of what they think a labrador should look like and I believe we are having this problem in North America. I think those of us who did, should pass on what we can on the true colour of the yellow labrador" Thankfully, a handful of breeders have done just that and now we have some fox red's doing well in the show ring in the United States. We have already mentioned Keepsake Cajun. This young dog currently finished his championship becoming just the 3rd fox red labrador to obtain an AKC Championship and the living true fox red AKC Champion. This may be true, but it is the shade that makes a fox red and they can appear both medium and dark. In all cases, the head and ears should appear red [again medium to dark] and based upon the coat type will determine how dark the body is. The head and ears were dark but the body looked medium at best and in fact some questioned if indeed they were fox red. One would only need to look close to see the red in the coat versus the dark honey brown of a normal yellow. It is the shade, NOT the degree of darkness that determines if the labrador is fox red or not. This "chinchilla effect" can vary greatly from dog to dog. Until recently it was believed that the difference in concentration of red colour [determined by the "ay" or "as" allele of the A Locus] is dependant upon the alleles at the "C" Locus. The "C" allele allows for full expression and intensity of the red tones , while the "cch" allele will decrease the red intensity to a clear tan colour. HOWEVER, the C allele has not been isolated to test this theory and in recent years it has been hypothesised that an "I" Locus is responsible for the intensity of phaeomelanin pigment [red pigment] in the coat. The following link is very helpful in understanding coat colour in dogs even though there is still much more to be researched. Breedings have shown that 2 dark yellows that each have a parent that is red, will produce some red in the litter. Unless the gene is present, the intensified coat will not be espressed. Within a litter of fox reds you will always get a variation of shade from medium to dark. Even on breeding fox red to fox red, a variation of shading will result. On all fox red puppies, as they get older, the colour will darken and this change can be dramatic. When one looks at a new puppy on coat shade, it must be remembered that you are looking at the undercoat, not the guard hairs. The undercoat will appear the colour of a brown paper bag. The key is the head and ears, not the body. Another key on a fox red puppy is the pigment. On a normal yellow puppy the pigment will be a distinct pink, on a fox red it will be peach colour. As soon as they are born, they appear fairly dark, but within a few weeks they lighten up as their undercoat develops. They will stay about the same shade until the guard hairs start to show. It is then that the red starts to appear. Again you get a better idea of the shade looking at the head and ears but only age will reflect the degree of chinchilla effect on the coat. Even on the head and ears, age will deepen and darken the colour. White Spots The chances of white spots [chest, bolar pad and toes, etc] are much greater within the fox red shade than with other labrador colours. White is very common within the yellow variation of the colour. Because the white blends in with the lighter yellow shades, it is not seen or noticed so therefore ignored. With a red, because it is so dark, the white tends to stand out. In black labradors, because the gene pool is so large, the tendency to throw white spots has been largely bred out. To throw white it takes both parents to carry the gene. In fox reds where the gene pool is so small, one can expect white spots and white mismarks in about half the puppies of a litter. White spots on the chest can vary from a spot to a blaze. There was a particularly stunning fox red imported from the UK to the States that had a white blaze. It did not bother him in specialty ring and he was used by several in their breeding program, irregardless. In most people's mind, to have a white spot, no matter what the size, is unacceptable for a Labrador, even though the Standard accepts it. If you are wanting a fox red labrador, you must be willing to accept it. Health and Temperament There is no difference in personality or health issues in the fox red shade. It is generally thought that a fox red tends to be a little more vocal than normal and also a little more attached to people. This may be due to the tight gene pool and that most are closely related. At some point in the ancestory, there was a vocal labrador or two. The doubling and tripling of these genes might have set this tendency. It is important for them to be close to their family, they tend not to let you out of their sight. It is then that the vocals can come in to play. Close to their family you will never hear a peep. Fox reds have also had a tendency to carry and be affected by PRA [progressive retinal atrophy] and more breeders are now DNA testing their breeding stock to ensure that they are clear. Orthopaedically, fox reds have proven to be more sound than the norm for the breed. Pricing There are many fox red breeders that are charging more for their fox red labradors purely on the basis of supply and demand. There are more people wanting the shade than there are breeders with puppies available. For me, the pricing of my fox red puppies is based soley on the cost of the breeding. Because the import process is very costly, whether it be bringing in a dog or frozen semen, and added to this the cost of AI, I have to charge more for my red puppies, in order to make them available in New Zealand. Over time as the fox red becomes more readily available with other breeders sharing in these lines, the cost to produce the puppies should decrease, as should the cost of their purchase.
