This gorgeous group came into my life after their mom wanted to capture some action shots involving their pool! Dogs swimming, yes please! As we were in the process of scheduling, their one dog, Pounce, was diagnosed with lymphoma and soon would be starting treatment. It was devastating news but his treatment has been going smoothly with no side effects! Pounce brindle style coat definitely does not let his illness slow him down one bit! With his safety vest strapped on, he charged in and out of the pool at lightning speed! Then it was off to find his favorite orange ball! Pounce was having the best time! We took turns with his pals, Maddie all white and Rocky posing in their stunning grounds and sweet senior Sammy was so precious on her mat. What a fun time with this crew! Updates Maddie is a wonderful senior gal looking for a place to spend her golden years! She has free-roamed for short periods of time and has done great, so I think she would enjoy full free-roaming permission. Maddie prefers to sleeps on the bedroom floor at night. Maddie has loved getting pets from everyone she meets. Her tail wont stop wagging if she sees someone walking towards her or hears her name. Maddie is gentle with children and loves that they always give her treats! She is highly food motivated—especially for peanut butter! She has met other dogs and tends to ignore them after meeting. She has not met a cat in my care but is not reactive to small animals running by her on walks. Maddie has arthritis and a bad hip so she she favors one of her back legs, but she is on meds for both and will be for the rest of her life. She still gets around great though, and is fine climbing stairs and can jump into a smaller car herself or a larger one with assistance. Though she will sleep all day if you let her, she enjoys short adventures outside to see new places. She loves car rides and happily watches out the window or, you guessed it, sleeps! Instead, the Wolfiness Score is based on the number of ancient genetic variants your dog has in our unique Wolfiness marker panel. These markers are thought to be related to "domestication gene sweeps" where early dogs were selected for some trait. For people with puppies, you probably want to know how big of a crate to buy or just how big to expect your dog to become. But genetic weight is also useful for people with fully grown dogs. Just like with people, overweight and obese dogs suffer reduced length and quality of life. They can develop chronic health conditions and suffer from limited mobility and other issues. How do we predict weight? How accurate is the predicted weight? Unlike in people, healthy weight in dogs is controlled largely by only a few genes. However, due to a few as-yet-undiscovered genes and genetic interactions that affect size, this algorithm sometimes misses. Occasionally it misses by a fairly large amount especially when a dog has a breed with an unknown size-influencing gene. This information will inform our ongoing research into the genetics of size and weight in dogs. Because they are inherited whole, your dog and his or her mom share the exact same maternal haplotype. Because most breeds were started with only a few individual dogs, many breeds are dominated by only one or a few haplotypes. These groups all originally descend from one male or female wolf, usually one that lived tens of thousands of years ago. Because they are inherited whole and not shuffled like other DNA, they can be used to trace the ancestral routes that dogs took around the globe en route to your home. Only male dogs have paternal haplogroups because they are determined by the Y chromosome, which only male dogs have. How are Maddie's ancestors represented in her DNA? All dogs are related and share some DNA. Siblings share lots of their DNA half of it in fact , cousins share a bit less an eighth , and so on. Because dog breeds are made up of a closed group of dogs, all dogs in that breed share a lot of their DNA, typically about as much as second cousins, though it varies by breed. Different breeds that are closely related share somewhat less DNA, and dogs from very different breeds share even less DNA but still much more DNA than either dog shares with a cat. DNA is inherited in pieces, called chromosomes, that are passed along from parent to offspring. Each generation, these chromosomes are broken up and shuffled a bit in a process known as recombination. So, the length of the segments your dog shares with her ancestors decreases with each generation above her: she shares longer segments with her mom than her grandma, longer segments with her grandma than her great-grandma, and so on. How does Embark know which breeds are in Maddie? We can use the length of segments Maddie shares with our reference dogs to see how many generations it has been since they last shared an ancestor. Long segments of DNA that are identical to known purebred dogs tell Embark's scientists that Maddie has, without a doubt, a relative from that breed. Many families can handle minor health issues that could arise over time, as these are often easily diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Temperament and behavior go deeper, we feel. Families looking for a household pet need a dog that has a reliable, predictable, safe, and easygoing temperament. So this is our number one priority. We pair dogs together with the highest chance of producing puppies with genetics superior to their parents. This is the only way we can secure a future for our pets as well as the future pets of all of our customers. Many of our breeding dogs are in Guardian Homes, and each pregnancy is a unique experience. Sometimes the female will stay with her Guardian Home during the pregnancy and then come to our home to whelp and raise puppies. And sometimes, we will take the female in to care for her throughout her pregnancy. We like to be close to our litters at all times, so they are born and reared in our spare bedroom right across the hall from our bedroom. First, we can maintain superior cleanliness standards. We don't want our home to smell like puppy poop, and puppies poop a lot! So, waste is cleaned up as soon as it hits the ground. Puppies that are raised in a clean environment are easier to potty train! Second, we can observe the puppies' behavior more effectively inside our home. So many families say to us, "I don't know how you get anything done at home; I would be watching those puppies all day long! It's so much fun! But we also observe on a deeper level and take notes daily to best match puppies to families. We have often considered moving litters to a well-designed kennel because of the simplicity it can bring. However, we can't every bring ourselves to do it. We would end up living inside the kennel to be close to the pups! We love what we do, and even though it can be a huge disturbance to have a litter of puppies inside our home, we wouldn't change it for anything.
