Make sure as well that you have what you need to effectively train your dog. If you're planning to clicker train, get a clicker. If you're planning to crate train, get the right-sized crate. Also be sure to pick up an appropriate collar and leash for general training. A leash should be no more than five to six feet in length. The best leashes for training are leather. Always check your equipment to make sure it is in good order and not liable to snap or break. Training works best when you dedicate a couple of short sessions 10 to 15 minutes twice a day to it. Try to train at times when the dog is not tired, but also not bursting with pent-up energy. Karen Pryor. Publisher: Ringpress Books Consider expending your Boxer's energy before training sessions by allowing him 20 to 30 minutes of high-intensity physical activity. This will enable him to better focus on training. Try to train the dog in a place where there are few distractions, so that your Boxer puppy can focus his attention on you. This means avoiding places with other animals or people. Always begin training in your home or yard and build up to environments with more distractions e. Your commands need to be simple, short, clear and consistent. Don't lecture your dog; they're not human so they don't process language in the same way. Phrases like "I've told you not to do that" or "Please stop chewing on the table" will not work as they are too complicated. John Bradshaw. Publisher: Penguin Experts believe that a given dog registers the first part of the word as the most important, so longer commands such as "Sit Fido if you want a treat" are liable to confuse him. Just say the word "Sit" instead. In general, shouting at any dog is ineffective. This is especially true for Boxers who are hyper breed by nature. Use a firm but pleasant and upbeat voice when instructing your dog; don't yell or lose control. Dogs are very intuitive and will be able to sense your frustration and may react in kind. The tone of voice matters, especially since, again, dogs don't process language in the same way that humans do. So how you say something may mean as much if not more than what you say. Publisher: Penguin Boxers are playful by nature, and a light, breezy tone will not suffice; he will think you are just playing with him if you are not firm enough. Try using hand gestures at the same time as you issue verbal commands. For example, raise your hand at the same time as saying "Sit". Dog behaviorists believe that dogs look for multiple clues as to what we want them to do, which includes the command word, tone of voice, and body language. Admonishing a Boxer puppy too long after the incident is ineffective. If you need to admonish or correct your dog, it needs to be done during or within a few seconds of the act. Dogs will have forgotten the event within seconds of its occurrence, so it's key to address the behavior immediately in order to facilitate the retraining process. Boxers are notoriously stubborn and steadfast, so you may have to correct your puppy numerous times. Always be consistent in your commands and desires of the dog. This helps your dog to understand what is expected. Don't forget to enforce training when you are out and about, so that your dog doesn't just thinking that "Sit" and "Stay" are things he has to do in the yard or house. By enforcing commands in public places it helps your Boxers to understand he must obey under all circumstances. Leave no room for doubt about what is acceptable behavior for your Boxer puppy. If he is not allowed on the furniture, be consistent. Boxers won't understand the concept of "sometimes"; they are either permitted to lie on the couch or they are not. If you live with other people, make sure that everyone in the house is on board with the training program. Using different words for the same action will confuse the dog, disrupt the training already done, and ultimately delay progress. But at the moment, they need your guidance. For now, this includes sleeping next to you for the first few weeks, maybe even longer. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Our articles on sleeping through the night and establishing a nighttime routine will give you extra tips on getting through this phase. A puzzle toy or Kong will work great at making them feel like you leaving them is actually something quite fun. Potty training All new puppy parents expect potty training to be on the cards. Boxer Dogs are great family pets. They can often be referred to as the clown of dogs because of their joyful personality and clumsy behaviour, which can be very entertaining! They are a loyal companion and make great guard dogs, alerting their owners of anyone who approaches the property. Also, they tend to love affection from people they meet, including children, and enjoy an energetic run around with other dogs they come across! However, as with all breeds of dogs, Boxer Dog training from a young age is important. Boxer Dogs are a clever breed and can be quite trainable once you find the right reward to motivate them. The pros of this breed could go on forever. They really are amazing dogs. However, one of the main things people need to consider with this breed is their high energy levels! If you do not have a particularly active lifestyle then the Boxer Dog may not be the right breed for you. Boxers are highly energetic and require lots of exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. If you are unable to dedicate time to put into exercising your Boxer Dog or finding ways to give mental stimulation, then you will find it exceedingly difficult to train and get along well with your dog. They also hold a reputation for being stubborn. This can cause problems for when you are trying to get them to do something. You need to have a lot of patience and persistence for Boxer puppy training. They are quick learners but you have to get through that stubbornness first in order to train them really well. Boxer Dogs are really energetic! Many people worry that training their new dog is going to be hard. Here are our top 10 tips for training Boxer Dogs to help you along your way… Make sure to exercise before training Boxers are an energetic breed and can become distracted easily. To help focus their attention on to you, exercise them before a training session. Discover what your dog likes When starting your Boxer puppy training, rewards are crucial. Every Boxer Dog is different and, as a result, they will all be motivated by different rewards. For example, some prefer treats and some prefer toys. You need to find out what your dog prefers and use that as a reward. If your dog likes treats, find their favourite treat. If your dog likes toys, find their favourite game. You can use these as rewards for good behaviour, which will make training sessions far easier! Reward Accordingly Depending on the exercise you and your dog are doing, you need to reward accordingly when it comes to Boxer Dog training. For example, if you are training your dog to walk to heel down the road, it may not be a good idea to reward your dog with a game of fetch. Focus on the good stuff Even though your Boxer may exhibit unwanted behaviour sometimes, you still need to focus on the good behaviour. As we said before, Boxer Dogs are stubborn, so reward their good behaviour and you will motivate them to do it more. The more you reward the good behaviour, the more likely it is that it will happen again. Motivation This is a similar point when it comes to Boxer Dog training. Boxers are known to be stubborn, but if we motivate them then they are more likely to do what we ask them to do. Using their favourite treats and other rewards is the best way to do this. So, we need to structure regular play times in for them. Dogs naturally want to play in the evening after their meal. You may notice that at some point in the evening they get a surge of energy and bounce around and want to play. This is a good time to play with them. One, two, three, and go Boxers are a very sociable breed and often get caught up with wanting to play with other dogs. To help with Boxer Dog training and for them to understand that they do not have to stay and play with every dog, you can teach them the 3-second rule. The rule is they can only meet for three seconds and then they are called away. This allows them a brief amount of time to say hello and then come back to you. If you do this enough, you will condition your dog to say hello and then walk on, making your walks a lot less hassle! Change Direction Boxers can be quite excitable when taking them out for walks and they may pull on the lead. To help combat this, you can change direction every time your Boxer Dog walks in front of you. This key point in Boxer dog training will teach them to follow you. And, if you reward them when they are well behaved and next to you, they will learn that they will get treats when they are beside you. Consistency is key It is very important to be consistent with the rules you are setting in place when it comes to Boxer puppy training. If you do not want your dog on the sofa but someone else allows it, then you will confuse your dog. Everyone in the household has to be reading off the same page in order for your dog to understand what it is you want from them. Set clear rules, and make sure everyone sticks to them! Learning to settle Teaching your dog to settle and relax is important for them so that not only can they unwind and relax, but they also understand how they should behave when you have visitors. This is when your dog lays down but rocks their hips over to one side. When your dog is in this position you can reward them and pair it with the word settle. If you wanted to take it a step further you can teach them to do this in their bed. Taking the time to teach them this key skill will really help the harmony in your home! Training should be started as soon as possible with Boxer pups. Among the wide range of dog breeds, Boxers are known to be one of the most trustworthy and intelligent. Their suspicion of strangers, alertness, agility, and strength make them formidable guard dogs. Because of their sturdiness and robust personality, they have been employed occasionally on police and military operations. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, and therapy dogs. These canines have interesting traits, in spite of their menacing appearance, that make them easy to take care of and a wonderful family favorite. It is essential to make yourself aware of the type of dog that you are going to handle, as well as the right time to start training your puppy. Ideally, Boxer training is not initiated until the Boxer pup turns three weeks old. During this period, he is able to learn how to obey simple commands which will make the upcoming training more effective. Furthermore, Boxer owners must know the various characteristics that this type of canine possesses. The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance and demands great attention. Boxers are renowned for their great love and faithfulness to their master and households. They are harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers; bright and friendly at play, but brave and determined when aroused. The Boxer's intelligence and willing tractability, its modesty, and cleanliness make it a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. This breed is extremely loyal, and is never mean or treacherous even in its old age. However, you must keep an eye on the precipitating factors for his anguish when it does appear and find out the reason for his unpleasant behavior right away, so that his frustration does not become part of his personality. TIP 2: Socialization is vital. Boxer dogs need interaction during the entire training process. Boxer puppies, in general, love to fool around, be with other human beings, and need some form of recreation. If integrated into the training environment, your dog will grow up more responsible. Boxers do not like being loners. They need to socialize with others just like humans. If not properly socialized or interacted with on a regular basis, Boxer aggression problems such as biting, chasing and barking loudly might arise unexpectedly and be difficult to correct. TIP 3: Providing regular exercise is absolutely essential. Boxer training should also include having your dog perform exercises. It can be a kind of sport or any outdoor activity. The key is to keep him active and agile, which helps him manage his energy levels when indoors. This exercise can be anything from a nice afternoon walk to playing a sport with him such as tossing a ball or frisbee. Boxers enjoy moving around, frolicking, and playing for hours. More movement means more strength and vigor for your dog. TIP 4: You are the alpha dog! During Boxer training you get to assume the role of a leader. It is imperative that your dog always treat you as his master and have no control over you. Make yourself the Alpha dog, especially during leash training. Leaders should be strict and dominant especially when setting rules. You must have the power over him and not allow him to overtake you. Adhering to this strict regimen until your dog fully learns and understands what behavior is acceptable and required will be worthwhile when taking him for a walk or to a dog park for exercise. Want to learn how to save on veterinary care? Click here TIP 5: Use a reward system. If your Boxer has been conforming well to the rules you have taught him during training, praise him often. Positive reinforcement is also an important element in Boxer leash training. You may give him his favorite bite-sized treat for being a good dog. Foods, toys, and telling him "Good job! Just as important as praise is remembering that if he misbehaves, you should just correct him and not punish. Punishing him violently or excessively may trigger Boxer aggression problems in the form of biting and scratching. The whole idea here is to repay him for his excellence and to reprimand in a firm but friendly manner. TIP 6: Whenever possible, spend extra time with your Boxer, beyond the training sessions. Some owners who do Boxer training might not appreciate the significance of the amount of time shared with their dogs. Insure that you allot time for your pup beyond the training to reassure him you love him and that he is your friend and companion and member of the family. Keeping your dog company is one way to bring your relationship with him to the next level, as well as increasing the success of the training. Avoid letting him feel unwanted or neglected. TIP 7: Teach your Boxer basic tricks. In Boxer training, teaching your dog a new skill is also important. As he learns a trick or two, it will not only impress friends and family, but also helps to increase your dog's mental development and obtain his trust easier. Sit, stand, roll, and kneel are a few examples of basic tricks you can teach your canine. These tricks just need patience and perseverance and he will grow into a very clever dog. TIP 8: Visit your veterinarian for help when needed. Certain problems may come up while training your Boxer. In this case, seek help from your vet for experts in your area familiar with this particular breed. Some of the issues such as proper crate training, ways to prevent Boxer anxiety and how to keep him from jumping on other people might require some extra help. The greatest tip for training your Boxer will be to approach him with patience, persistence and lots of love. Your Boxer will become a remarkably well trained dog, and a wonderful member of your family. Ready to start saving money on pet wellness care? You can train your dog a number of commands when it is quite young. Furthermore, every breed is different and they all have varying personality traits. Today, we will be talking about dog training the popular Boxer dog breed. Boxer Dog A medium-sized guard dog that originally came from Germany, the Boxer is one of the most popular choices as pets today. This breed has a box-shaped face, with a squarish jaw and muscular body which makes it quite good-looking. But they are not only friendly companions. They are also extremely intelligent, intuitive, alert, and patient; all traits making them a very popular breed. In addition to being family dogs, they can be raised as guard dogs, service dogs, and therapy dogs, and will also help owners in many other activities- if trained to do so. Are Boxer Puppies Easy to Train? They are intelligent dogs, who are extremely willing to learn provided that the training process begins at the right time and in the correct manner. Make sure that you do not neglect training your boxer puppy because this breed has a high-energy level. Without learning the commands, your boxer puppy might develop bad habits or become overly hyper, aggressive, or even fearful. However, there are some tips that will greatly help dog owners in achieving success while training. Training the Boxer Early On When it comes to Boxer puppies, it is best to begin the training sessions within the first 20 weeks of their life. You have to start defining boundaries, setting rules, and assigning them their role in the initial stages of life. So, start with basic commands as soon as you can. This does not mean you can start professional training when the boxer puppy is only a few weeks old. Different obedience training should be started at different stages. While some of them are advised super early, others can be started when the pup is around 6 months old. However, Boxers learn best and quickest when they are taught early in life. This should be started as soon as possible for Boxers. However, remember that the boxer puppy is still young and scared, so you have to be extremely soft and never scold him. Start training by taking it to the potty spot around mins after a meal and stand and wait there till the puppy eliminates. You have to start building a regular potty training schedule and overtime, you will see how your boxer dog follows a consistent routine themselves. You can also teach them voice commands from the start as the dog can easily pick these too. So, potty train your dog as a start and then slowly add more commands. Proper crate training is also important for teaching responsibility and good behavior to them. When the boxer is three to four months old, you can start teaching your dog these commands. Remember to use food treats as a way of rewarding them every time they understand your voice cues. The best training method is giving your dog lots of praise and reinforce good behavior with a reward system. Leash Training Boxer Dogs All dog breeds must be taught how to stay on the leash and get used to it. You will be taking your dog for walks regularly, and using the leash is the only way to control them while they are out. Boxer dog training cannot be complete without this important lesson. Make sure that you have a suitable and comfortable collar and leash for your boxer. Again, keep a tasty treat with you when you are on a walk and offer it whenever the dog stays by your side. Remember, these sessions should be kept short and positive. You should constantly lure it towards yourself so it learns to walk with you. When it starts to act like a devil and keeps pulling away, then ignore it. When your dog comes back to you, reward it. Always troubleshoot related leash behavior problems by sticking to this strategy. Crate Training For Boxers Your dog must know how to stay in a crate happily. You can teach them to do so by providing them a large and comfortable crate. When you start to crate train your Boxer, you can expect some crying and whining initially. Puppies tend to cry a lot in the first few nights. But you must stay strong and pull yourself through no matter how your pup reacts. So the golden rule is, you are not to allow the puppy out of the crate until it stops crying on its own. Keep practicing this and soon, your doggo will be totally fine. When you finally open the crate, keep a treat ready so your dog knows it did a good job. Importance of Proper Socialization In successful boxer dog training, socialization also plays a key role. Boxers need to be given the opportunity to interact and get along with other human beings. Simply spending time with their dog trainer or owner is not adequate for them. This will help to prevent aggression issues like biting or chasing as well as barking loudly. This should be integrated with puppy training early on as it is much harder to correct such problems later on when you have an adult dog. Who is the Alpha dog? Before you begin puppy training, you must know that dogs have a pack mentality. This means that there is only one alpha, who is their leader. And this alpha leader should always be you, the owner! Dominance training is an important approach that is often recommended while training the boxer breed. No matter what you are training, let your puppy know what is acceptable and what is not. You will be the rewarding giver and the commander at all times. Make sure to always exude confidence and control with your demeanor and voice, because dogs can easily pick these cues. This entire approach is very effective in training your dog well. Spend time with your Boxer Dog Although it is important to be the alpha, you also need to take on the role of a loving owner. Boxers love attention and time, so it is important that you also have separate fun, playtime with them-apart from training sessions. This allows your dog to see you in a different light as well. It helps you bond with them better, and as these dogs are so loyal and affectionate, it will also help achieve more training success. After all, boxers are known to be obedient and faithful to their owner, especially when they have developed a deep connection with them. We recommend you to always visit the veterinarian if your Boxer is facing behavioral issues that stand out as odd to you or if you are having too much trouble training it. This is to ensure that your doggo is fine and not facing any other issues you may be unaware of. Boxers are a family favorite and a highly recommended canine companion for everyone. Using our tips, you can train it to be an excellent partner who will be forever obedient and extremely well-behaved. We hope this guide was helpful to you. Enjoy training your Boxer pup!

About Us Breeding for Health Hello and welcome to my web page! Let me start off by explaining how we started this wonderful adventure! I have had many different breeds in my life and was always attracted to the sight hound. Unfortunately they didn't match my lifestyle or what I was truly wanting, personality wise, in a dog. So I took my search online. I found one of those online "best for you breed" surveys and low and behold it came back as English Bulldogs! I thought there is no way this short, pudgy, ball of winkles could be my match! The breed was nothing like I had ever had before. So I ended up finding as many other surveys as I could and, what do you know, every one of those tests came back with the same answer. So I gave in and started researching the breed. About a year later I had finally taken the plunge and bought my very first English bulldog puppy. That was the start of the most incredible change in our lives! The English bulldog is like no other breed I have ever known! I truly couldn't imagine our life without our bulldog family! And I hope you feel the same way we do! There is nothing like bulldog love and I hope you add one of these perfect, adorabull squishy faces to your family too! Please contact me if you would like to add an English bulldog to your family or feel free check our puppies for sale page. We want to ensure happy, healthy puppies! We only select our dogs from healthy bloodlines as well. WE believe that you don't have to break the bank in food bills for your dog either. Our puppies get the best start with Iams puppy as well. Our puppies are fully vet checked at 4 weeks to ensure they are on the right track, and agin at 8 weeks for another full physical and their first vaccines. Happy tummies equals happy puppies! Our puppies and dogs are all raised and live in our home with us. A Furever Friend The English bulldog is a companion breed and thats exactly what we breed them for! We want everyone to feel the same as we do when it comes to our bullies! They are funny and sweet and goofy! Sometimes sassy, stubborn and just plain lazy! However they act at the moment, trust me when I say they will always put a smile on your face! They are the sweetest cuddlers and seem to really know when you are feeling down or just need them to be by your side. This is a breed that wants to be with you no matter what you are doing. We are big into educating possible puppy buyers what to look for when choosing a puppy and a kennel. Not for our own benefit, but to educate and protect the breed we love so much. My bully was from the first litter that Char had and I want to say, not only did I get a magnificent dog who soon will be 8, she is healthy also. I am happy to say that in all the years since I have had Saydee Rose, Char has always been there for us not only as her breeder but also as a dear friend. Any questions or problems that could arise I know I could go to her and she would take the time to answer them. Even the great comments she say about my other dogs I have is so sincere. Although there are many great bull dog breeders out there, I personally would always want to own one of Char's and will always recommend her. Their knowledge, love and care for this breed is evident the second you meet them. They take the time to educate and even mentor you, if you're new to this quirky breed. Over The Top Bulldogs is what responsible breeders should aspire to be and what every prospective owner should seek. Not only will you get the most wonderful addition to your family, you'll have breeders that you'll be happy to call friends. Over 4 years ago, my then boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to add a new fur baby into our lives. Jorden, my now husband has always loved bulldogs. The look, the temperment, the silliness. I was of course on board. After some pretty extensive research, we came across Charlene, and am I glad we did!! Charlene met up with us at her home for an interview. I realized during this interview how passionate she was about what she did and the breed itself. She was really a plethora of bulldog information and was able to answer any question we had. Our lives have never been the same. Our dogs are the epitome of the breed definition. They are gorgeous, strong, hilarious, stubborn, incredibly loving and amazing with our 2 children. We have had no breed related health issues, they have gone for their annual checkups every year and have been in perfect health since day one. Charlene has become a friend. Her phone lines are always open for any questions or concerns, any time of day or night. I cannot speak highly enough of both our amazing fur babies or Charlene and the outstanding job she does with her careful breeding consideration, making sure all fur babies go to phenomenal homes and taking such joy and pride the entire time. I would recommend Over The Top Bulldogs to everyone looking for a new bulldog family member. My house will never be without one of these characters!! Charlene's reputation for beautiful, well tempered bulldogs, her extensive experience and knowledge with the breed, and her quest to promote and better the breed resounded amongst the Toronto Bulldog community, and she truly exceeded our expectations. Charlene invited us to her home, and introduced us to her family, both two legs and four. It was evident from the start the love that she and her children had for her bullies. The puppies were next to Charlene's bedroom, rather than somewhere segregated from the family where they could be constantly cuddled and handled by her and her children to ensure they had the proper attention. We ourselves spent several hours playing with both her puppy and adult bullies, surprised at how energetic, smart and well behaved they were. We fell in love immediately. It was clear how devoted she was to all her puppies, how serious she was about finding them the proper home, and that they were going to live the lavish life. When it was time to pick up our puppy Rupert, Charlene and her children took time to hug him good bye and they all became quite emotional. After 8 years, despite the distance between us, Charlene still keeps in close contact, always enquiring about Rupert and asking for photos. She is always available to answer questions or concerns, and did not hesitate to come visit when poor Rupert had broken his leg. He, thanks to Charlene, has changed our lives, he has an ability to always make us laugh, and couldn't imagine life without him. Thank you Charlene for your unwavering contribution to this beautiful breed and all that you have done for us and Rupert. Rob, Jen and Rupert Acquiring an English bulldog puppy at this stage of our lives was kind of a sudden decision for this family. And the breeder connection had already been established through unusual circumstances. I remember thinking: "But I don't even know IF this is a reputable breeder! Charlene's bulldogs "tick all of the boxes" of what a well bred bully should be - in every way with health and temperament at the top of the list. She raises beautiful families - her own and her dogs! Our Harry is simply the best and has been the most wonderful addition to this older family. I would recommend Over the Top Bulldogs to anyone wanting to add one of her wonderful pups to their lives! We had a bulldog previous to owning our pup, and although she was a lovely dog, she was plagued with health problems her whole life. Charlene's dogs are happy, healthy and have great temperments. We are so happy that we have found a breeder who strives to do the best for the breed by trying to continue the great traits of the English Bulldog by carefully selecting who is in her breeding program. The pups are raised in her home, and are socialized with other dogs, kids and other people from birth so you know that they can handle almost anything. We couldn't be more pleased with our little girl Molly who has made our lives so happy. Life is good, but it just that much better when you own a bulldog! Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Our goal is to create lovable, well-adjusted family dogs that look gorgeous. We believe your dog should be your best friend, your protector, and should also stop traffic with its colorful good looks! We take breeding seriously. We plan months and sometimes years in advance. We raise our pups in our home and work with a high quality veterinary team to ensure the best outcomes possible. Never before had we encountered an animal so quirky, so affectionate, so absolutely stubborn, and so chock full of personality! In no time, the breed had made a permanent impression on our hearts. Time has flown by. Temperament, health, conformation, function, and genetics are just a few of the considerations behind each and every planned breeding. We work closely with a reproductive specialist veterinarian who is herself an experienced breeder. We never breed animals with chronic health problems. We take our dogs' security, cleanliness, and quality of life very seriously. They are family pets first, and breeding dogs second. More "couch" than "kennel"! Not only do we love to watch our babies grow up, it provides useful data on health and temperament outcomes for the dogs we've created. We take pride in what we do, but we know we aren't perfect. That's why we are always improving our process and staying on top of developments in science, health, and rearing practices. Contact Welcome to North Creek Goldens Finding an ethical breeder is tough, let alone one you can actually trust. Eight years ago I had difficulty finding a Golden Retriever puppy locally that I could actually afford. Exercise Grooming The Golden Retriever is believed to have originated from the Russian tracker dog which has now gone into extinction. It has its origin from Scotland, United Kingdom and originally bred in Scotland in the midth century. As of then, wildfowl hunting was a quite popular sport amongst the Scottish elite. The retriever breeds as of then were inadequate in retrieving the games from both land and water and as a result, the best water spaniels as at then were crossed with existing retrievers which is how the Golden Retriever came to being. Aug 21, Share For one reason or another, some dogs love messing with cat litter boxes. This can be dangerous for the dog and the cat. Plus, it can make your house a huge mess. Often, the easiest thing to do is dog-proof your litter box. Use a Baby Gate Cats often have no trouble getting around baby gates unless they are tiny. You can also install the baby gate so that it is just a few inches off the ground, which should allow the cat to squeeze underneath the bottom. This is probably the most comfortable option, but it does mean leaving a baby gate up all the time. Of course, this only works if your cat is an expert climber. You can always put a cat tree near the litter box if your feline needs a bit of extra help climbing. Image Credit: Sharaf Maksumov, Shutterstock 3. Self-cleaning litter boxes can be expensive, but they are a great option if you want something that works. Litter boxes with covers will deter larger dogs, especially since they will not fit into the litter box. Some cat litter boxes are entered through the top. You put something taller, like a cat tree, next to it so that your cat can leap in. The dog will be unable to get in, no matter its size. These boxes work best for smaller dogs, as bigger ones may be able to reach their head in. Install a Cat Door You can also install a cat door to keep your dog out. These are usually made to go on an outside door. But you can put most of them on an inside door as well. Install one going into the room where you keep the litterbox and plan on keeping that door shut. However, your cat will have no problem going through it. Image Credit: AndreasGoellner, Pixabay 6. Instead, you use a drill to install a door chain. Teaching this command is pretty simple. Hold a treat in a closed fist next to your face. Your dog should see you pick up the food and know it is in your hand. Move your hand further away from your space so that your dog has to move its eyes more to look at your face. Next, hold the treat between two fingers so that your dog can see it. Repeat the above steps, but with the open hand. Once your dog has that mastered, kneel on the ground in front of your dog and put a piece of food on the ground in front of you. Tell your dog to leave it. If your dog goes for the food, cover it with your hands. When your dog looks at your face, reward them with a different treat. After your canine has mastered that part, stand up and drop a piece of food on the ground — close to you so that you can cover it with your foot if necessary. Image Credit: Jaromir Chalabala, Shutterstock 8. Ensure Your Dog is Mentally Stimulated Many destructive behaviors stem from your canines being bored. Different dogs will need different amounts of mental stimulation, which is usually tied to their intelligence level. Smarter dogs need to stretch their mind more than other canines. There are many ways you can keep your dog mentally stimulated. One easy way is to provide daily training sessions. Training is hard for dogs, as they try to figure out what you want them to do. It also makes your dog better behaved and can result in them learning useful commands. However, not everyone has time to train their dog daily. Some dogs may need a bit more mental stimulation than a training session as well. In these cases, consider using puzzle toys to entertain your dog during the day. Puzzle toys come in all sorts of difficulties and utilize food to keep your dog interested. However, a few puzzle toys can keep a dog busy for hours. In this case, it can be challenging to convince them not to eat it, even if they are entertained otherwise. Alternatively, you can also use substances like vegetable oil or canned pumpkin. Okay, it's our product, so we may be biased — but we love it so much, we just have to share it! Use a Muzzle If none of the other methods are working, you may need to muzzle your dog when the litterbox is available to them. There are many different types of muzzles — beyond those used for aggressive dogs. Some are specifically designed to prevent dogs from eating things they are supposed to. They also make muzzles that still allow a dog to drink, which is a reliable option if you need to leave it on your dog for an extended period. Sometimes, our dogs are so persistent in breaking into the litter box that some owners may throw up their hands. However, your dog must be kept away from cat stool. Cats can have internal parasites, like hookworms, that can then be transferred over to your pet. Furthermore, clumping litter is hazardous for canines. When eaten, it will clump up in their stomach and cause all sorts of issues. In some cases, it may cause a blockage that can be life-threatening. We recommend trying a few of the things we listed in this article, as they tend to work best when used together. Related Read:. That is until your doggo gets into the kitty litter. One of those gross behaviors is raiding your cat's litter box and eating what they find there. Learn why your pup is prone to this behavior and how to keep dogs out of the litter box for good. Dogs are natural scavengers who tend to devour anything with a strong smell, even poop. To the highly attuned nose of a dog, cat poop smells like cat food, which, as far as your dog is concerned, is a special treat. Once your pooch discovers these tasty nuggets in the litter box, it's like they've hit the jackpot. But despite this behavior being enjoyable for your dog, it should be discouraged, and not simply because it's gross. Cat feces can carry harmful bacteria, including salmonella, which could make your dog sick. It also can carry a parasite that causes a condition called toxoplasmosis that can be harmful to humans if your dog licks your face, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cat litter can also harm your dog if consumed in large enough quantities to cause an intestinal blockage. The best method depends on the size, temperament and trainability of your dog. Your cat might also have a say in whether certain methods will work. While it might not be realistic to clean up after your kitty every time they go, cleaning the box once or twice a day will help to cut down on your dog's opportunities. A self-cleaning robot litter box can make this task easier, if your cat will tolerate it. You could also switch to an odor-neutralizing litter to discourage your pup. Train Your Dog The most permanent way to keep your pup away from the cat box is to train them to leave it alone. Before you begin, make sure your dog is getting high-quality dog food so that they're not missing any nutrients in their diet. They should also be getting plenty of exercise and mental stimulation so that they aren't exploring the litter box out of boredom. Once those bases are covered, try following these steps from the AKC to teach your dog the "leave it" command: Hold a treat on the floor under one hand and allow your dog to sniff it. When your dog loses interest and gives up, say "leave it" as they're turning away. With your free hand, give them a better treat than the covered one. Gradually work up to telling them to "leave it" while they're still inspecting the treat. Reward them with a better treat when they turn away. Once they learn to associate the command with getting a better treat than the one they're investigating, practice letting them sniff the litter box and telling them to "leave it. If you have a small dog, this might be as simple as elevating the litter box out of reach, or placing it inside a bathtub. For larger dogs, a covered cat box might work if your cat will tolerate a lid. If your cat vetoes a lidded box, installing a pet gate or a cat flap to the room where the litter box is stored might be your best option. Whichever method you try, be sure to keep your kitty's preferences in mind. If you need to relocate the litter box, move it gradually, in small increments, to give your cat time to get used to the idea. Similarly, changing litter should be done gradually, mixing a little bit of the new litter with the old and increasing new litter slowly as your cat becomes used to it. She currently lives in the Ozarks with her husband and their gaggle of four-footed dependents, where she enjoys watching a wide array of wild animals in her back yard while drinking her morning coffee. One easy way to keep a dog out of the litter box is to put the box in a room or closet and use a baby gate to block access. If your cat can jump fairly easily, he'll be able to make it over the gate. If your cat cannot jump, set the gate up in the doorway a few inches off the floor so that your cat can crawl under. If your dog is roughly the same size as your cat and could get under the gate, try setting up the gate at floor level and leave a box, stool, or chair next to the gate so your cat can hop over. Another easy solution is to set up your cat's litter box someplace your dog cannot access. This will ensure that your dog cannot physically get to the cat's stool, but it's not a guaranteed solution. You'll need to make sure that your dog is not a strong jumper or tall enough to simply stand on his hind legs and access the box. If your cat is old or incapacitated, this plan may not work. Try putting a chair, stool, or cat tree next to the table or counter where you've elevated the litter box. That way your cat can climb up to the box with greater ease. If you can't keep your dog away from the litter box, try installing a cat door into an existing door. You can set the cat's litter box up in a spare bedroom, bathroom, or closet, and after installing the cat door you'll be able to leave the regular door shut. A door chain is similar to the cat door, except it doesn't require cutting into your door. Simply drill and install a door chain that's long enough to let your cat fit through an ajar door, yet short enough that your dog won't be able to fit his body through the crack. If the door won't stay ajar without closing, you may need to prop the door open while the chain is in use so your cat can still get in and out without being trapped. Dogs getting into the litter box and eating cat poop is easily one of the top problems owners of both dogs and cats deal with. It can be a huge task trying to keep your pup out of the litter box! Believe it or not, there is a reason your dog is engaging in this behavior, and there are several ways you can keep them from doing it again. Dogs are scavengers; they will eat pretty much anything they come across. And they find cat poop to be particularly delicious treats because it smells like cat food to them. The reason it does? In a much rarer case, your pup may be chowing down on poop due to a health problem. The result is them gobbling down anything that resembles food in the slightest. Cat poop can contain a host of different bacteria and parasites that can make your pup ill. Bacteria can include salmonella , campylobacter , and clostridia , amongst others. To make matters worse, salmonella can be transmitted from dog to human. Cat poop can also pass along worms , as well as a parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis which your dog can then transfer to you via a nice sloppy doggy kiss. As far as litter goes, it can also be dangerous to your dog in large quantities. If your dog eats enough litter, it can result in a blockage in the intestines. The good news is that most dogs would need to eat a ton of litter for this to occur. If it seems like your pup is having trouble going or if their poop looks different than usual, get them to a vet. This method is one that requires your time. The quicker you get in there, the less often your dog will be able to get a treat. Click here to learn more and get yourself a bottle. Cover the Litter Box This one is an easy fix to the problem, but it depends on both your cat and dog to be successful. Depending on your cat, this may not be a good option. These litter boxes are fabulous because they will clean themselves after each use. The downsides are they might make your cat nervous, they can be pricey, and if your dog is super-fast, it might be able to get in there before the self-cleaning begins. Image Credit: Litter Robot, Unsplash 4. However, if you have limited space in higher areas and will need to use the space for other things, the idea of a litter box being there might squick you out. Putting up a pet gate will block access to the litter box for your pup, and voila, problem solved! But how will the cat get to it? You can get a pet gate that has a small pet door in it to let your cat in and out. With one of these, you can leave the door to the litter box area cracked open enough for your cat to slip through while ensuring the crack is too narrow for your dog. This is another instance where your pets being close in size will make this a poor solution. Doing this will require the most time and effort on your part. There are too many health issues that could arise from doing this some of which could be passed along to you. The simplest way to get your dog out of the litter box will be cutting off access to it, getting a different type of litter box, or cleaning the box constantly. Once this is done, you can be sure your dog will be much healthier if maybe a bit poutier! So, what if your dog is not ingesting anything and simply flinging litter around just for fun? Well, this still needs to be discouraged and not just because it makes a mess! Cats are territorial animals that like their own space. Have you ever seen your cat rubbing his face on your leg or the sofa? By doing this, they are releasing unique pheromones from specific facial glands. In the wild, cats would use these glands to leave their scent on trees and other items to mark their territory. To your cat, the litter tray is part of their territory. So, if there is constantly a dog scent on it, your cat may refuse to use it all together! Purchase A Covered Litter Box Perhaps the simplest solution is to purchase a covered litter tray for your cat. Many litter trays now come with hoods. So, they can only be accessed by pushing open the small front flap. This solution gives your cat more privacy to do their business, but not all cats will accept this change. Bigger dogs may also be able to knock the hood off and still be able to dig in the litter. Replacement filters and litter box liners are sold separately. Eventually, your pup will realize that good behavior equals tasty rewards. This approach will take time, but the results will be worth it in the end! NEVER punish a dog for performing this behavior because this is just likely to make the situation worse. Instead, be patient and offer rewards when your dog leaves the litter tray alone. With a little time and effort, you will soon have a harmonious household where both canine and feline can live together peacefully, with minimal mess! From the age of 4 weeks the puppies are offered dosed and larger stimulus, such as sounds of thunder, fireworks, cars, washing machine, vacuum cleaner etc. As they are so cute, they meet many people and children, other animals, they learn to walk on the leash, getting used to cars etc. You can choose the puppy yourself, we do not assign puppies like many other breeders, but will advise and help you with choosing because we know the puppies so well! We work with a waiting list and when it is your turn, you can choose the puppy that has not yet been selected by the owners above you on the waiting list. To enlist, click here!
