They will quickly learn to tell you when they have to go by either sitting or standing next to the door, or in some cases, scratching at the door.Some people have had success training their dogs to paw at some bells that you can tether up at the back door as well. Bottom line, is that the more you're on top of this early, the quicker they will learn the deal of housebreaking. In most cases we have had our puppies housebroken within a day or two, but this means we are always with the puppies the first few weeks until they have the hang of it. Once they do, they won't be perfect and accidents will still happen and usually the persons mistake. DO NOT scold the dog. Just quickly scoop up the dog and take them outside. When the puppies are young, we start telling them to go potty for pee and poo poo for.You can use any other command but this is what we have used successfully. Training them to go on command is hugely helpful and starts imprinting on the dog what they need to do outside. As the puppies start moving around outside we just say "Go Potty".We keep repeating this until they give the characteristic squat of urinating or hump backed and crouched position of defecating. As soon as they are done at the very moment, and not a second later we excitedly praise the puppy by saying "Good Potty" or "Good Poo Poo". You can also first say "Yes! The Bernedoodle puppies want to please you and they catch on to this very quickly. You continue to repeat this process everytime they go outside and they will get the hang of it. This is extremely useful especially when you're on long road trips or in a rush to leave the house for a bit! We typically remove food after the puppies have had all the opportunity they want to feed and usually have the last feeding around 7 pm but leave water out all the time until about 8 pm. We will continue to walk them every minutes unless they are sleeping and we try to get them some good romping around time at this point so they are good and tired for bed time. We use crates at night time and during the day on occassion to get them used to the crate. We give them one last walk around pm. When they are weeks of age, expect to get up once in the early morning hours to walk them, but just let them go to the bathroom, and then promptly return them to their crate. Be strong with this! Don't give in to any whining or barking or the like. If you do, they have conditioned you and the crate will become a dust collector. The first few nights the puppies may literally go bizerk on you.Be strong! Don't do anything more than this. We had one puppy that cried and pawed at the crate door the whole night and we thought for sure this would be the one that wasn't going to crate train. Well by day three, she was perfect. You just need to know that except on very, very, very rare occassion, your puppy is going to learn to settle and sleep in their crate. You just have to be mentally strong, get some ear plugs, give your puppies maybe a sound machine and some toys, and try to get some rest. We just get one of the XL size crates and then safely secure an object to give them less space.This way you won't have to get a bigger crate when they grow. Although we give them an open fenced in area that we supervise to play in, we will put them in the crate several times during the day for about an hour so that they can get used to the routine. They may fight it at first, but will learn to love it very soon. Just don't quit on this very important step. Don't over do this at the young ages and just incorporate training throughout the day as a general part of their daily routine. SO if you want to teach them sit, just put a piece of food in your hand, palm facing up, and begin moving the food slightly above their head and backward while saying "sit".We will have already started this with them but keep it going! Just be patient, enjoy puppyhood, have a great attitude, and you'll develop what will be your favorite dog ever! However there are some things you can do to help. First, have a toy or bone within reach and when the puppy begins mouthing a hand or arm or something just say "OUCH" and then give them the toy or bone. Do not hit nor tap on the puppies snout. Just a firm and loud "OUCH!! Puppies are exploring and play biting each other during the first 8 weeks and they learn how hard they can and can not bite. Human flesh, without the thick coat, is a lot more sensitive and the puppy needs to learn what is and what is not appropriate. Don't be afraid to raise your voice when the mouthing is too hard. Or if the puppy is doing good licking then say "Good kisses" or whatever praise statement you want to use. But really encourage the good behavior. Sleeping Arrangements Now just like when you bring a new baby home, you are likely to have some disturbed nights at first. Your puppy is used to sleeping with the rest of the litter and not used to being alone. Leaving its parents and brother and sisters is a huge hurdle to overcome. You and the puppy will get better sleep at night if at first, you let the puppy sleep in a cage at the side of the bed. They will be reassured by being close to you the substitute parent. Inside the cage place a simple waterproof mat and a comforter an old teeshirt or something that has your smell or that of the breeder. Internal Gates Your new puppy is going to be curious and wanting to look around the whole house. We were fortunate when we brought our puppy home as we had open plan stairs and looking through the steps at the floor below scared him. He had a real fear of heights; even if we held him close to an upstairs window, he would turn away rather than looking down. So climbing the stairs was an issue and he never built up the courage to climb past the first couple of steps until he was about ten months, when suddenly he bounded up the stairs at speed. Placing child gates around the house will make life so much easier and allow you to confine the puppy to designated rooms. It will enable them less chance of creating mischief and ensures they remain safe. Potential Hazards Your house is full of potential hazards. Log trailing cables running across the floor will be something that your puppy will take great delight in trying to chew. A bottle of bleach standing beside the toilet will be a challenge. Your puppy will see just about anything as something he can play with and chew. Keep hazards out of his reach. Garbage Bins Indoor rubbish bins, especially in the kitchen, are a source of great wonder for your puppy. All those interesting food smells coming from inside, and all that stuff to play with. If your puppy gets the opportunity, he will find a way of tipping it over so he can access the goodies inside. Similarly, when he gets access to the yard, he will also take great delight in the challenge of accessing your garbage. Playtime aids You will find it much easier if you use the baby gates to seal off one room or a playpen to seal off a small area of the house. In that living space, you can place his water and food bowls, some toys, and somewhere to lay. The absolute worst thing you can do when these situations occur is to shout and scare the dog or smack it. All that will achieve is to make the dog scared of you, which will slow down future training. The dog is not doing it to annoy you; he genuinely has not worked out what your master plan is and where the potty area is. Bernedoodles are clever dogs, and he should learn this faster than some other breeds. Choosing the Correct Diet When you first bring your Berndoodle back from the breeders, hopefully, you will have supplies of the same food that he is already used to eating. When you first get the puppy, his stomach is only just adjusting to solid foods, so make sure that you are feeding him puppy food specially designed for sensitive stomachs. Do not just buy and dog food. House arrest Keeping your dog confined to a designated part of the house or in a playpen is in his own interest. You are protecting his safety. The area within the playpen or designated area should be free of things that your puppy can choke on, or harm himself with. The confinement is also very much in your interest because you know that when you are out of sight, he is not doing any damage around the house, or finding ways to break out. Choose somewhere that has hard floors, so that if there are ay accidents, it is easier to clean up. Now whether you think so or not, there will be times when your Bernedoodle is going to have to be left alone. It happens. In this case, it is essential to confine your dog to his designated area — the puppy haven, for his safety. He will be familiar with this area and less frightened than less familiar parts of the house. Puppy Haven Let your dog feel good about the designated area. Do not make your Bernedoodle think it is a punishment. Instead, make him believe that it is a playground that contains his favorite toys and foods—a place where he likes to go. Comforters Comforters will contain your scent on an old unwashed shirt or something along those lines. They feel calm when they have the comforter; These should be in the puppy-haven if you have to go out and leave them. They should also be in the cage when they are put there to sleep. The presence of the comforter should make these places feel safe. Taken away from their parents and siblings, they are suddenly all alone and unsure of what is happening. By making the right preparations, you can make this transition easier for your Bernedoodle. We also adjusted her playpen from a small circle around her crate to blocking off part of the living room and eventually blocking off half of the apartment. Bed optional : I would wait on this one, honestly! So many things to buy and set up at once. Food, snacks, etc. Kibble: Find out what food your dog has been having with the breeder or shelter. We chose to keep Moose on the recommended kibble. Treats : Again, you have years to buy more treats. We did a lot of dehydrated chicken before expanding to other meats. We used ice cream bowls the first few months because her bowls were way too large for her servings. Many people swear by potty pads, but we mostly stuck with grass and tanbark patches. These made it easy for her to transition to pottying outside once vaccinated. Lots more to say here so let us know if you have questions. Potty spray : Accidents are going to happen. Lightweight ones are great while your pup is small. We got a rope one we loved, but it was too heavy for Moose until she was 6 months old. We ended up getting a few of the same one but you can mix and match. Start with smaller, lighter toys. Learn which toys your dog is having the most fun with, then buy more. Rotate them around so they still feel new and exciting. We got a simple soft one for carrying her around before she had her vaccines. It also gave us more peace of mind and confidence leaving her alone for short periods of time without worrying that she was disturbing our neighbors. Feeding Whether you adopt a micro Bernedoodle, mini Bernedoodle or standard Bernedoodle, all puppies usually begin with around a cup of food a day. Bowls should accommodate small amounts and then can be switched out for larger sized bowls accordingly. Automatic or timed dog feeders or leaving food out all day is not recommended for new puppies. Choosing what brand of food to use is just about as personal of a decision as deciding brands for yourself. However, it is recommended to start them off eating whatever they are already accustomed to. Ask your breeder what type of puppy food they have been using. Transitioning from one brand to another should be done slowly by mixing in the old food brand with the new desired brand. Switching brands comfortably should take no more than 2 weeks. Collar, Leash, and Identification New puppies can be sneaky and quick. Have their tags engraved with their name and a phone number where you can be reached and put on a properly fitting collar. Collars should fit snugly, but not too tight that it creates a choke. Leashes will be necessary for walks and training purposes. Bernedoodles respond best to positive reinforcement so simple leashes usually suffices for training. Vets Decide on a vet right away. Puppies require de-worming meds, checkups, and vaccines. Although most puppies receive their first and second set of vaccinations while with their mothers, vets will continue vaccinations every weeks so appointments will need to be made as soon as they are in your care. Vets can recommend products for flea and tick control and can answer any questions about their overall health and care. Grooming Decide upon a groomer. Depending upon their age, new puppies can usually wait awhile before their first grooming appointment. However, Bernedoodles will eventually need to be groomed every weeks. They will also require regular brushing and nail trimmings. There are endless options for shampoos and grooming products for you to decide upon. Natural dog shampoos generally are worth the cost and avoid skin sensitivities that may develop from grooming products. Training As mentioned, crates, food, leashes, and collars will all need to be decided upon beforehand to begin training right away. And as also mentioned, Bernedoodles respond to positive reinforcement. So, treats are a good item to have on hand to motivate. Treats are a personal preference for your pup as well and you may have to try different types to find the one they enjoy best. If you are potty training indoors, make sure to have potty pads ready from the start. In whatever way you decide to potty train your puppy, expect accidents to happen. Have a pet urine stain and odor remover spray on hand when they do occur and remember to keep your cool. Training takes time and practice. Toys The very best thing to entertain your new puppy is you. However, new puppies instinctively chew, so buying teething or chew toys will help avoid frustrations of chewed up shoes, furniture, or other unwanted items. Remember that the beginning is where you can bond and build a relationship with your puppy. Toys are a great way to engage and play. Bernedoodles love attention and affection and thrive on pleasing their owners. The more engaged you are with them, the better your puppy will behave and obey. The ears may go up for a bit during the teething process and then return to the floppy position. After more time passes, the ears should return to the upward position again. However, even after nine months, there are several methods that you can try that will assist in training his ears to stand. When your puppy reaches eight months old and still has floppy ears, you can try giving him chew toys to work out his jaw muscles. In a vertical position. Take a popsicle stick and attach it to the top part of both ears. In a horizontal position. The pup is going to tear the tape or stick off the ears several times. The key is to continue to re-tape the ears. Sooner or later, the pup will forget the tape and ignore it. About once a week, take the tape off and see if the ears will stand on their own. Continue to re-tape until the ears stand. If the ears are not up by 7 or 8 months, they are not going to come up. The ears should look like this once taped. The same dog with ears now up. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. They are highly intelligent, playful, and one of the most loving breeds out there. They connect with their human on a different level. They also have gorgeous coats that are fun to style. I was lucky enough to purchase my first Standard Poodle, Josephine, about 6 years ago. She has been an amazing addition to our family and is my best friend. We have kept three of Josephine's puppies from different litters. Primrose, Winnie, and Penelope have proved to be just as amazing as Josephine.
