Essential oils like anise, birch, and clover are great choices for nose work. You can douse the object with the oil or inject the scent using a special syringe called a scent injector, which you should be able to find at your local sporting goods store, or online. Choose the mark. Dummies work great for essential oils. Get a few and douse each one with a different smell! You can use plush dog toys, pieces of cloth, or strips of leather for scent marking too. It can also be fun to leave a scent trail to the objects. To do this, drag the scent-marked objects along the ground leading up to their hiding place, or squeeze some drops of essential oil on the way to the chosen hiding spot.

So, what can you do to help your pup's ears stand? Genetics matter. Just as having puppies from hip-scored parents will lower the chances of your puppy getting hip dysplasia, or just as having puppies from parents who were show champions increases your chances of your puppy becoming a show champion, buying a puppy from parents with in-standard shape, placement, and size that stand strongly increases the chances that your puppy will have similar ears. No matter what you do, you can't cheat DNA. If this is a major concern for you, and it is for some people, cover your bases by starting with a healthy puppy with health-tested parents with in-standard ears. Unfortunately, I'm aware that by the time this question is asked, the most important factor, genetics, is no longer under the questionee's control because they've already chosen a puppy. So on to tips that will help with a current puppy and not the next! I know you want to play with them, don't you? Those cute little satellite dishes! But don't do it. The more you flex and bend them, the harder time they have firming up as the pup gets older. It's okay to pet a puppy. You should pet your puppy but use backward strokes in the way that their ears lie backward naturally. Playing with them isn't going to help. Ears don't have bones in them.The same goes for dogs. Ears are made of cartilage. Supplementing calcium isn't going to strengthen cartilage. Calcium isn't a bad thing for a growing puppy, but if you feed a commercial diet, all of the calcium your dog needs is already in the diet. Giving a bunch of calcium tablets won't help, but it can give your puppy hypercalcemia, which can damage organs such as the kidneys and heart. Find a high-quality diet, and you'll never have to give extra calcium to your puppy or dog. Dogs have 18 muscles in each ear. Each of these muscles controls the possible ways a dog can decide to move their ears. While muscles alone won't help cartilage harden, strong jaw and ear muscles can help with ear set placement. I've seen people worry about the ears of 3-month-old puppies. It's perfectly normal for a pup's ears not to come up until after teething. Teething is usually completed at months. Everything is fine. Use the time before, during, and slightly after teething to make sure your pup is eating the healthiest diet you can provide, is being vaccinated according to your veterinarian's wishes, and make sure your puppy is parasite-free. Little critters sucking blood and nutrients away from your puppy's body will take a toll on its ears.Focus on the things that matter most and hope for the best. Your puppy has finished teething. It's months old. They're still not up. Well, now is the time to be interested in your puppy's ears. At this point, you have four choices. They're just ears. And yes, German Shepherds have really cool ears. It's surprising how few dog breeds have erect ears. Something about the domestication process causes floppy ears in a lot of animals, such as lop-eared rabbits, most dog breeds, some breeds of cattle, some breeds of pigs, etc. One of the first things a person would say to describe a German Shepherd to someone who had never seen one would be to mention their erect ears. But in the end, they're just ears. Your dog will be fine, and it's no big deal if your dog's ears don't stand. Personally, I would contact the breeder and let them know that the pairing they're using is producing weak ears. But if I adopted, I wouldn't have anyone to call to warn. So, I would go on my merry way hoping that whoever bred my dog and let it end up in a shelter never, ever, ever breeds another litter of dogs again. There is a method where you tape up your dog's ears to support them to help them stand. This must be done in the month window. Any sooner is too soon, and 7 months is most likely too late. Your vet likely knows how to do it, but be prepared to get judged by people who have no familiarity with ear taping. A lot of people see tape and think you cropped your pup's ears like it's commonly done on some mastiff breeds and Dobermans. In that procedure, some of the ear is removed during a surgical procedure under anesthesia, and the ear is shaped and taped. You have a very high chance of someone thinking that's what you've done to your German Shepherd puppy, even though no vet in their right mind would do it, even if you asked them, including veterinarians who specialize in doing crop surgeries in show dogs. Again, remember, taping a German Shepherd's ears involves no pain whatsoever. No cutting. No surgery. Nothing more than maybe slight confusion as to why you're taping a structure to their head. The same confusion a puppy would have if they had any bandage or new collar on them for the first time. Even after reading this and it being explained, someone will still say it's abuse to tape a puppy's ears up. It happens every time. And then they'll go put a harness or collar and leash on a puppy, both of which caused very similar confusion before their puppy got used to it. Moral of the story: If this is what you want to do, don't let anyone make you feel like a bad person for using the same skin-safe medical tape we've all had on our skin for one scrape, cut, burn, or another. Same principle as taping, only you're using skin-safe adhesive and gluing foam cutouts to the inside of the ear. It works, but honestly, no one really uses this method anymore. It's harder for the dog to get off, but it's messy. It's still an option, though. In my opinion, if you're winning shows by using surgical enhancements, you're being dishonest with the judges, unfair to the other competitors, and deceitful with your puppy buyers if you ever breed the dog. Of these four options, throwing in the towel is the option with the least amount of hassle. Taping can work and causes no pain, except to you as you re-tape again and again when your puppy removes the tape. The last two options aren't practical in my book, but I said we'd talk about how to get a puppy's ears to stand, not exclude things that work because I personally don't find the ethics behind surgery appealing or find other methods outdated. These are the dos and don'ts, the maybes, and the why-nots of German Shepherd puppy ears standing. Remember to relax. If your puppy is still teething or under months, it's normal for the ears to be down, or to have been up and gone back down during teething, as is having one ear up and the other down or any combination of the aforementioned. When went to visit my German Shepherd, Allie pictured above at 7 weeks old , her ears were floppy and undeniably precious. I brought Allie home at 8 weeks, and those ears still had their ups and downs, but by 10 weeks old, her ears were up permanently. So, the key is to catch it in time. This flip-floppy stage is completely normal. Genetics can also come into play when some breeders try to breed specifically for German Shepherds with larger ears. As a result, those big, oversized, heavy ears may be too much to stand up. If pointy, perky ears are important to you, then choose your breeder and puppy carefully. Make sure to check out the parents — how do their ears look? Any significant trauma to the ears during this time can cause permanent damage — which may also cause droopy ears. Try to have everyone keep their hands off those adorable ears as much as possible. Parasites: Yuck. Puppies need chew toys, as it exercises their jaw and their head and neck muscles. Those muscles are important for perky puppy ears. So, let your puppy chew, chew, and chew on the right things of course. Stick to a high-quality, natural diet instead. Cottage cheese and yogurt both have plenty of calcium without overdoing it , and chicken feet are a natural source of glucosamine, which helps strengthen cartilage. Give those ears time to develop on their own before you resort to taping. At the end of the article are some sources that go over common methods of taping. Note: There are several options that you can use for this — there are even foam dog ear forms. Thin, white surgical tape that tears easily. A 2-inch wide tape works well, and you can also get this at Walmart, CVS, or somewhere similar. Note: Do NOT use duct tape or electrical tape — these will do way more harm than good! An unsharpened pencil or popsicle stick. Adhesive — either skin bond adhesive or eyelash glue are good choices. Give those ears plenty of time to develop and get stronger before taking action. How old was your German Shepherd puppy when its ears finally stood up? Let me know below! I get a lot of emails about taping German Shepherd puppy ears. The majority of these emails come from people who are jumping the gun and worrying too much. By that, I mean their pups are 3 or 4 months old and they are starting to panic because their puppy's ears are not standing. I tell these people that they need patience, they need to wait until their pup has finished teething. I caution these people not to jump the gun and tape the dog's ears too early or in the wrong way. I know people who have screwed their dog's ears up for life by doing this. I have had puppy customers who go ballistic on me and panic. So I issue a word of caution here. With that said, the other side of the spectrum of taping ears is something that many people do not take seriously until it's too late. When ears are taped at 7 and 8 months, there is very little chance of it working. This is an unfortunate fact of life. German Shepherd puppy ears can come up between 8 weeks and 6 months. If they are not up when the dog is through teething this varies from dog to dog but in general between 16 weeks and 20 weeks of age , I tell my puppy customers to get very interested in their ears. While it's not time to panic, it is time to sit up and take notice. The first thing to do is make sure that your puppy is in good health. This means no intestinal parasites. Take a stool sample to your vet to have it analyzed. It's also important to make sure the pup is getting good quality food. We feed and recommend a raw diet but if you do feed a commercial diet, I strongly recommend researching all the options available and feeding the highest-quality food you can afford. View our list of all-natural kibble alternatives. In fact, a lot of times, a pup will have both ears up and all of a sudden, they will come back down when the pup starts to teeth. Many owners panic when this happens. But not to worry, I have never seen a pup whose ears did not go back up when this happens. If a pup does not have his ears up by 5 months, I strongly recommend that you get involved with taping your dog's ears. Use the thin white surgical tape the kind that's paper-thin and tears easily. The 3M Micropore tape, 2" wide, works well. I like to use women's hair rollers. Take the plastic out of them and just use the foam. Wrap the ear around the foam and tape them into a tight roll. In a vertical position. Take a popsicle stick and attach it to the top part of both ears. In a horizontal position. The pup is going to tear the tape or stick off the ears several times. The key is to continue to re-tape the ears. Sooner or later, the pup will forget the tape and ignore it. About once a week, take the tape off and see if the ears will stand on their own. Continue to re-tape until the ears stand. If the ears are not up by 7 or 8 months, they are not going to come up. The ears should look like this once taped. The same dog with ears now up. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. I don't think it's something that normal small animal vets know how to do well. In my opinion, too young to tape. The material to use to tape German Shepherd Ears The pup with its ears taped I prefer taping German Shepherd Dogs ears after the dog has finished teething. This usually means the dog is older than 4 - 6 months. Maybe waiting another month would have been a better idea for this puppy.

How often should you bathe a Goldendoodle? A general rule of thumb is to bathe a Goldendoodle every weeks. For optimal coat health, Goldendoodles should not be washed more than once a month unless absolutely necessary! Keep in mind, the frequency in which your Goldendoodle should be bathed can depend on a variety of factors such as activity level, environmental exposure, and coat length. When your Goldendoodle is freshly groomed and has a shorter coat , you may be able to wait slightly longer for their next bath. Goldendoodles tend to be a more active breed , if you and your furry companion enjoy time spend in the great outdoors, it may mean more frequent bath times. Some pesky pups love to get all covered in mud, meaning an additional appointment in the bathtub! If your dog is visibly soiled in dirt you should opt to wash them at that time. What happens if you bathe your Goldendoodle too frequently? Bathing your Goldendoodle too frequently can cause some problems for your pup. Bathing too often causes dry skin which can become itchy and irritating for your Goldendoodle. Dry skin can be uncomfortable, and in severe cases, dry skin may lead to excessive itching resulting in skin lesions, hot spots, or sores. Too much shampooing can deplete these important oils and cause decreased skin and coat health. The loss of these oils have a noticeable appearance on your dog, as their coat may lose some of its natural shine, and their hair may become more brittle and damaged. Additionally, both the Poodle and Golden Retriever, and thus the Goldendoodle, have water-resistant coats. Bathing too often can cause a decrease in the effectiveness of the water resistant coats. What if you just bathed your Goldendoodle a week ago and they decided to take a mud bath in the nearest puddle? Is it okay to bathe them again? If your Goldendoodle has a history of having sensitive skin, you may want to opt for the first option, where no shampoo is needed, thus reducing the chance of irritation. Simply get a bucket of warm water, and have your dog put their paws in it to wash off muddy paws. This task is even easier if you have a Mud Buster paw cleaner! Once all the mud is gone, you can towel dry your dog. Option two is to wait until the mud has dried. At that point, use a brush to get out as much as you can before bathing them. Bathing your Goldendoodle is an important chore for both you and your dog. For starters, regular bathing can keep your home cleaner and smelling nicer. A lack of bathing, can cause a build up or dirt, debris, bugs, and whatever else your dog happened to get into to stay stuck on their fur. Not only is this unhealthy for your dog, but it can fall off onto your bed, couches, and other furniture, potentially transferring these particles and bugs to the rest of your family. Additionally, dogs can actually absorb allergens through their skin. These allergens can cause irritation, which leads to scratching, and can cause more serious injuries such as skin lesions. Therefore, washing your Goldendoodle regularly is a good way to keep these allergens in check. More About Goldendoodles…. Some of the care should be done daily to weekly, and other care depends on the coat length you keep on your dog as well as your lifestyle. Lack of ear care can result in painful ear infections for your dog. Many groomers will also trim nails and clean ears. We recommend no more frequently than every two weeks, and no less frequently than ever 6 weeks. Even small snags can turn into mammoth mats in a bath. A longer coat understandably requires more care, as does a more active lifestyle. Find your own personal style with your Goldendoodle taking your lifestyle and maintenance preferences into consideration. Someone who keeps their dog in a very long coat and has a very outdoorsy, active lifestyle may need to brush every other day or daily. We recommend starting to brush your dog at least twice a week, and then adjust in either direction depending on your dog and your lifestyle. Brushing only works on the superficial part of the coat and misses most of the coat closer to the skin. To properly brush, use your brush on a small segment of coat, separating it until you can see the skin. Brush that out and then move on to the next section. Again, be sure to comb to the skin. Regular brushing AND combing can help avoid this. Always discuss matting with your groomer PRIOR to leaving your dog at the salon to avoid any unpleasant grooming surprises. The larger the mat, the more it can pull on the skin, and the more likely you may be to have skin problems under the mat. Matting can hold in dirt, bacteria, funguses, as well as painful debris such as burrs. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Every dog loses their puppy fur to grow in their adult coat. For Goldendoodle puppies, this poses a challenge. A quick solution to this is using a slick brush a few times a week. Here is one of our favorites. All of our Doodles of NC puppies are brushed from just a few weeks old so they grow fond of the one-on-one bonding time. Bath time! In addition to brushing, our puppies learn to love bath time. Using a tear-free or mild dog shampoo allows you to bathe your doodle as frequently as every week without drying out their fur. Earthbath All Natural Pet Shampoo is our all-time top pick. Dogs, in general, have sensitive ears. If their ears start emitting a strong odor, or your dog scratches their ears and whines, we recommend a trip to the vet to check for an infection. Mini goldendoodles can easily be bathed in the kitchen sink. For larger Goldendoodles a walk-in shower or bath tub with a shower wand works beautifully. Lather twice and rinse thoroughly! Then towel dry and brush the coat. To speed up the drying process, a hair dryer on a low, cool setting, can speed up the process. Trips to the Groomers A goldendoodle's fur grows quite rapidly. We encourage a few trips to the groomers a year to help trim up their coat especially around their eyes to help minimize madding of the fur and healthy coat growth. And, one last tip! It is gentle enough for their delicate skin, but also smells super clean and fresh. Practice this a few times everyday until they start flipping their head at you every time you call their name. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same name too! Teach your puppy to sit Labradoodle training is often started by teaching them how to sit. We call this a marker word. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. Hand Touch and Handling If you handle your puppy too roughly or grab at them, not only are they going to have a bit of a fright, but it could make them feel scared about being touched in the future. Our idea of completely house trained is when a dog tells you they have to go out on their own or use a doggy door, otherwise you are still in the management phase. I know that sounds obvious, but it can be hard at times. It is very easy to give puppies the wrong signals if you pet them or baby talk them while they are being fearful, over excited, etc and in these situations you are actually telling them you like how they are behaving. Rules and discipline are just as important as rewards and a puppy likes to know their boundaries to feel safe. Make sure everyone knows the rules and is consistent on what is allowed and not allowed in the house ex: jumping on the couch, jumping up on people, etc. Having rules makes a respectful dog. Just like children, puppies thrive on structure and will live in confusion if there are no boundaries- making everyone unhappy. Most importantly, expose your puppy to everything you would want them to be a part of in your life within their first 16 weeks of age. During this age, you should continue to socialize your puppy to strangers, take them in the car and in pet friendly stores. You should also continue to get them accustomed to being examined, clipped and bathed at an early age to avoid any behavior problems in these areas in the future. Puppy Schedule: AM: The puppies wake up and are carried outside to the designated potty spot right away. They are carried in the beginning to avoid any mistakes before making it out the door. After a few days of this routine, the puppies are able to run outside on their own after being let out of their crates and no longer need carried. Do not play with your puppy outside when you are taking them out to go to the bathroom. Go back inside first and then go back outside to play. Puppies must not be allowed to roam freely in your home. You have to watch the puppies during the playtime to ensure they do not need another bathroom break. Anytime you are not feeding, holding or playing with your puppy, he should be in the crate. This is very important the first few weeks in your home to continue the crate training. If you allow a very young puppy too much time out in your house unsupervised you can expect some accidents. Once a puppy starts to potty in the house it is harder to break that pattern. Keeping an eye on your puppy at all times during this stage is very important so you can catch their signal that they need to go as soon as possible. They will usually sniff the floor in a circular pattern. Just scoop them up and head out the door to the potty spot. After they go potty outside, praise and even reward with a treat. This will speed up the house-training process. Perform this pattern throughout the day. Be sure that you puppy has finished both 1 and 2 outside before allowing them playtime. A lot of puppies will do both things more than once. Do not play with them at this time so they know they are going out for a reason. If they have not done both things outside, place the puppy back in the crate for a little while and then take them outside again before allowing any playtime in the house. Deer Creek doodles are used to sitting calmly before given each meal as instructed. This is the last time the puppies eat or drink, leaving them satisfied but also allowing enough time before bed to use the bathroom several times to limit any overnight accidents. Now is a great time to play with, exercise or teach your puppy a new trick before bed to wear them down and help them sleep. Reminder : Do not allow your puppy to roam freely around the house at any time of the day without complete supervision. The puppies go in their crates with command "In Your Bed" and are given a treat. The lights are turned out and we say "goodnight. They settle down and relax in their crates because they associate it as their beds. In a new environment, your puppy may or may not whine 30 minutes or less to test their new home, but then will settle shortly and connect the new location with their old training. It is important not to get them out of their crates when they are behaving in a way you do not like because they will associate their negative behavior to a positive "reward" that is getting out of the crate. If your puppy does continue to cry, be sure they cannot see you. Place them in another room and turn out the lights and place a blanket or towel over the crate. You can also play some soothing music or ambient noise in the room with them and give them a Kong toy with a yummy filling inside to occupy them. We do not recommend sleeping with your puppy or with the puppy sleeping in a crate in your bedroom as anytime you were to move the puppy would wake up and have to go out to potty no matter what time of night it may be. Place the crate in another room near the door they would be going out, this is best for house training. Keep in mind you are really the one who is "house trained" in the beginning, knowing when to take the puppy outside to potty, to recognize their body language of needing to potty, and to monitor them closely when they are not in their crate. The better the human does in the beginning at limiting accidents in the house, the faster the puppy will be house trained. Below are some tips and suggestions on how to make your puppies first few weeks together with you and your family a stress free and exciting time for all involved! Bringing Your New Puppy Home The first few days home with you, can be overwhelming for your new puppy. Everything is a new experience to them. Try to bring the puppy into your home during a time that is slow for you. Once you arrive home with your puppy, you want to start a routine as quickly as possible. Try giving your puppy a few minutes of playtime before beginning any training. This is brought on by the stress of a big change, and as long as it is not excessive or bloody, it is nothing to be concerned about. High quality Puppy and Dog foods have all the necessary vitamins and nutrients that your dog needs. One ingredient to avoid in your puppy food is corn. Corn offers little nutritional value and is mostly a filler. You may feed your puppy whatever food you prefer. However, If you are changing foods, you want to do it slowly to give them a chance to adjust to the new food. Each day, gradually add more of the new food and less of the old food. If changed too quickly, the puppy may experience diarrhea. Once in the morning and once at night. We recommend the evening feeding to occur by - pm. It is recommended that you do this until they are around 6 months of age. Remember to offer water every 2 to 4 hours, not just when offering food. As with feeding we don't like to give water too close to bedtime when training a labradoodle puppy. House Training Your Labradoodle Puppy "The key to house training is to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Such deterrence may seem impossible if you have a puppy that seems to eliminate every few minutes. But by following a few simple steps, you can teach your canine companion proper potty deportment. Pick A Potty Spot - Choose a grassy area that is close to your home and easy to clean up. Whenever your puppy needs to go, take him to this spot and use the same route to get there every time. Supervise Your Puppy - To prevent accidents, watch your puppy closely whenever he's not confined. Get Him A Den a crate, more on that below - When you can't watch your puppy, put him where accidents are less likely to occur: In a crate. The crate is a safe, enclosed area where your puppy will instinctively refrain from eliminating. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. Dog after dog failed health and temperament tests. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Nevertheless, I searched tirelessly for Olde Bulldogges that would put me within reach of my ultimate goal of a bigger, better bulldog. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching. With a few tastes here and there of what could be, I eventually stumbled upon a few exceptional dogs. As dogs finally started passing health testing, I could move forward. The Breed Training Program For Our English Golden Retriever Puppies Our trained English Golden Retriever puppies are trained with a well-developed positive reinforcement program that creates confidence, self-control, resilience, and an amazing and obvious desire to please. Our trained Golden Retriever puppies begin life with a meticulously thought out and implemented program that begins at birth. Then we build on that program to produce well rounded puppies with an excellent start in training. Scroll down to our video links to see for yourselves! Though the visible results of our training is impressive, the more important difference in our puppies is with regard to what goes on at the core or the heart of our puppies. The training methods we use are designed to teach behaviors as a secondary goal. We train our puppies to focus and think before we teach them to perform behaviors. We concentrate our attention on building confidence, self-control, resilience, an ability to focus, and a love of working for and pleasing a person. Our program is built around the idea that how a puppy is trained is more important than the behaviors they learn. Every aspect of our program is centered on the fact that to us behavior in young puppies should be secondary to attitude. Good behavior is taught as well. The videos below will show that the behavior our puppies learn as a by-product of our building internal qualities is incredible! Below are a few videos that show our puppies at work. You can find examples of our training on YouTube of over a hundred puppies. The few you see below are not just isolated cases of a few well-trained puppies. What distinguishes our training programs from the training provided by most is the focus our puppies have on a handler. You can see this by looking at videos of our puppies in training. The very first thing we teach a puppy is to have and to enjoy having eye contact with a person. This type training will at the best produce puppies that reluctantly follow a handler and their food. The Foundation of Our Training Program The foundation of our program is teaching puppies to want to look at a handler and focus on them. We train our puppies to think instead of react. They figure out for themselves what they need to do in order to please a handler and get a reward. Our teaching methods are built on marker training and shaping instead of luring and leash pressure. Minimal Use of Luring Luring is simply having a puppy to get into a position by following a treat. We will occasionally use luring in the initial phase of training. However, we quickly change from luring to shaping and by far most of our training is done with shaping. Shaping — Our Primary Training Method Shaping is a training method that encourages a puppy to want to incrementally figure out on his own the behavior that a handler is wanting to train. We wait until a puppy starts to move in the direction of doing what we want. We reward as he gets closer to the desired behavior expecting more and more from him as he progresses. Shaping takes more time initially to train compared to traditional luring types of methods. However, the results are far better and longer lasting. We use treats but in a different way from lure-based trainers. Treats are not used as lures and bribes, but rather as rewards. In other words, our puppies are not shown the reward and asked to follow it around to entice them to work. It is only presented after the behavior is done. Puppies are encouraged to actively use their brains in order to engage the handler and to earn the reward. Our primary goal is to create in our puppies a desire to work and focus on a handler. Having puppies that are primarily focusing on the treats themselves is not enough. We want willing and happy working puppies that desire above all to please the handler. Even worse are puppies that are focused on avoiding a punishment. Formal obedience begins just after puppies are 6 weeks of age for most litters, at 6 weeks 2 days. Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies: A start in the following areas: Listed below is what we work on with these puppies. No puppy can be fully trained and dependable in any area until they are close to a year old. This program is just a start. House Training We take away all indoor litter areas before puppies are 6 weeks old. Starting the week prior, we work heavily with them making sure that all of them are doing all of their business outside. We make use a doggy door for this initial training. In fact, we believe that initial training done with a doggy door is better. A doggy door is a fantastic tool for initial house training. Rather, we gradually move toward puppies being house trained without it. See our page on House Training for more information. Consistency is key to successful house training and allowing a puppy to get himself out during the initial weeks paves the way for success. We wait until bladder control is sufficiently developed, until a love of a crate is sufficiently established, and until consistency in pottying outside has become habit before introducing a puppy to forced confinement without access to outside. All meals are fed in crates. Favorite bones are only given in crates. Puppies are given treats when they are sitting quietly in crates. We work hard to make sure that puppy crate time is not only tolerable, but that puppies actually like it. It is important that puppies develop a love for a crate before they are forced to spend long periods of time being confined. We start our crate-conditioning by leaving our puppies in their crates by slowly and incrementally increasing their crate times. This work takes place at meal times. By 10 weeks of age, our puppies are used to being crated for over 30 minutes at a time when wide awake. Training a puppy to be happy when awake is the hard part. If puppies are asleep, puppies are happy in there for much longer. By the time puppies are 12 weeks 3 day, they are used to being in crates for up to 2 hours during the day and most are happy in their crates for more than 7 hours overnight. Preliminary Work on elimination of bad Behaviors We begin working on elimination of bad behaviors such as jumping and mouthing by reinforcing good behaviors. We never rewarding the bad ones. Puppies are interacted with in such a way that they physically are unable to get to our hands with their mouths. Instead, we re-direct them. We play with them with toys instead of our hands. We never pet puppies over 8 weeks when they jump on either us or on the side of a pen. Instead we teach them to sit for attention. These bad behaviors take far more time to get rid of than this short training time provides. However, we start the process. Puppies and dogs also learn very quickly who will allow them to jump on them and who will not. New families must be consistent and continue the training. It also teaches puppies to make eye contact and to have self-control. We work with each puppy individually on getting in a crate, turning and sitting, and holding eye contact. Then we release them to eat. Puppies then spend increasingly longer periods of time in the crate with bones and random treats. This routine is carried out 3 times a day at meal times. The video below shows a condensed version of a typical meal time training session of our trained English Golden Retriever puppies at 8 weeks of age. By the time puppies leave us, this routine has built into our puppies an incredible amount of self-control. Keep in mind that these puppies are just beginning to learn these skills. Basic Obedience Building internal qualities in a puppy such as confidence, self-control, resilience, the ability to focus, and a desire to work for and please a person is our main goal. Teaching a puppy to focus and look at his owner is the one of the foundations of our training. Our primary goal is to produce puppies that want to look to their owners for direction. We teach these puppies to do so out of habit and a desire to please. It is not necessary to have puppies obey out of fear. Basic obedience includes work on heeling, coming when called, the sit and down commands, staying in position, and an introduction to the place command. We also work on good manners such as sitting for attention without jumping, waiting for a verbal release before exiting crates and pens, etc. See our page on our Training Changes for more information. Desensitization and Socialization English Golden Retrievers tend toward having softer temperaments and need more socialization than many other breeds. Overall, the imported lines tend to be calmer with softer temperaments than American Goldens and certainly much calmer than American Golden field lines. Therefore, more socialization is needed. We expose our puppies to the normal sites and sounds of a busy home. Our puppies are exposed to various outdoor areas, to various floor and ground surfaces, and to tight spaces. Our puppies are introduced to small agility equipment. We introduce them to steps, and to a variety of sounds. However, starting at 9 weeks of age, all puppies are brought on weekly mule rides. Our mule is not an animal! Rather it is a 4-wheel drive vehicle that provides a tremendous socialization experience. We also take puppies on weekly car rides starting at 7 weeks. Our Mule The mule rides are super environmental desensitization experiences. On these mule rides, we expose puppies to a wide variety of roads, neighborhoods, sights, and sounds. In addition, the experience of the mule itself is valuable. The mule is loud and sometimes a little bumpy. It is a great way to acclimate puppies to sounds as well as to the roughest car rides they would likely ever experience. Our mule rides are super desensitization opportunities. Puppies sit in a lap and enjoy being petted. They stick their noses in the air and smell all kinds of new smells. While they are enjoying the breeze, they hear all kinds of new sounds. They see a whole new world of different sights. Puppies that stay with us for our 12 Weeks program have 3 field trips to places that are close enough to our home to get to by the mule. We stop and practice obedience exercises on leash in these distracting environments. An especially challenging place that we take our puppies is alongside a busy highway. Our puppies are also socialized with a wide variety of people. This page also gives details as to what you can expect if you pick your puppy up at 11 week. Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies Options We offer several training options that are all discussed in detail on our expectations page. However, for most of our litters, we only offer a couple of these options. There is an 8 week option, a 10 week option, an 11 week option, and a 12 week option. For most families, we recommend our 11 week program. See our page on The Best Time for Puppies to Leave the Breeder to understand why we keep most if not all of our puppies until at least 9 weeks 5 days. Instead, we divert their attention from undesirable habits. We provide them plenty of exercise. We control their environment so that they have no choice but to behave themselves. They learn quickly that if they want attention, they must behave on our terms. This method of training works far better than punishment based training. However, it takes time for bad behaviors to extinguish themselves. By weeks of age, hardly any of our puppies mouth us. Jumping is minimal when one-on-one with individual puppies. However, at this young age, they are still figuring out what is acceptable and what is not. For more information, see our Training Philosophy page. This sets these young puppies up for success rather than giving them all sorts of temptations. Our philosophy of training embraces the idea of not adding difficulty to an exercise or temptations for bad behavior until habits of good behavior are firmly established. For example, we keep our shoes off the floor rather than punishing a puppy for chewing them. We provide lots of toys so that there is no need to chew the furniture. When they do, we simply divert their attention rather than punish them. A well-timed punishment can have its results in deterring certain behaviors. However, punishments come with a price. Importance of Training Method The method used by a trainer is more important than what is taught, especially in puppyhood. Any trainer can quickly teach almost any behavior using punishment based or aversive training. Though punishment based training can give quicker results for the short-term, positive training gives longer lasting results. Please see our page on our Training Philosophy for more information on how we train. Families Continuing With the Training The training that we give our puppies is a fantastic start. However, it is only a start. Families must pick up where we leave off. Our website has plenty of instructional pages to help. Pricing and Pick Up Options The price for the training for our three training programs is on our puppy questionnaire. The price of puppies is due not including training fees when puppies are 5 weeks of age the same policy as for puppies leaving at 8 weeks. Training fees must be received by us at least two weeks before puppies are picked up or they must be paid by cash or certified funds. We provide a receipt if payment is by cash. There will be an additional charge if your puppy needs a health certificate. See our Payments and Policies page for more information. As of the end of June , to our knowledge no airline requires a health certificate for in-cabin flights. Delta required a health certificate for in-cabin travel for a part of .However, they have now reversed that policy and no longer require one. Keep in mind, though, that airline requirements are changing daily. Please consult your own airline. Make sure that whoever you are speaking with understands that you are asking about in-cabin travel. All airlines require health certificates for travel underneath. They must travel with their families in the cabin. Trust the answers you get online. They are the official answers. MANY employees giving out information over the phone are unfamiliar with pet policies. Call and get one answer from one employee. Who Trains the Puppies? I Karen do the initial obedience training myself along with our 28 year old daughter Jenna starting with our late litters. We also have a team who help keep things running smoothly. Our team works with puppies on potty training, socializing, and obedience skills already trained. In the past our team has consisted of three high schoolers that all worked for us for over three years. However, starting with our litters, two of the three have moved off to college. One daughter, Jenna, has been an incredible trainer for many years. She will be making Summer Brook puppies her priority. The other, Elise, is a socialization superstar and will be taking off college for the winter and spring to work full time with Summer Brook. We also have a good many friends and contacts that visit puppies. Our goal is to make sure that puppies have a wide variety of ages and types of people to interact with. I also have experience training at high levels in AKC obedience. I have won dozens of first places at AKC obedience trials including many high in trials and combined high in trials. In rally obedience, Tara has won almost 20 combined high in trials and about the same number of triple combined high in trials. It works! Further and most importantly, our training methods produce puppies and dogs that WANT to work. All of my dogs love to train. Not my Tara and Piper! Our training method builds a desire and love of working in dogs. This desire to please and to work is our primary goal at Summer Brook. A Good Home is a Must We are very selective about where our puppies go. Our puppies must go to homes with people who have time for a puppy. Even our trained puppies need a lot of time and love. Hunting is our favorite autumn routine. Every time Dad and Joe get home from hunting, the rest of the family storm them with questions. You could say we train our dogs for stories. After a month or so of our obedience or hunting training your dog will learn many new skills. Each of our adult dogs is trained for hunting and is hunted over. A number of our dogs are descended from field champion dogs. It fun to see that the dogs look forward to hunting as much as we do. Each year on the first duck hunt of the season Tanner will literally tremble with excitement as he anticipates the first retrieve.
