They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. You can use tools like baby gates to keep your German Shepherd in a puppy-safe room. In fact — your puppy will learn that biting during play or cuddles only results in you leaving, and them ending up on their own! Not only will this help to show your puppy that biting is not an acceptable part of playtime, but it can also help your own sanity to remove yourself from those sharp teeth occasionally. Think About Clothing You should also think about the type of clothing you wear around your puppy. Loose, hanging clothing can be appealing to your puppy, and provide something easy to grip on with their sharp teeth. Wear tight fitting clothing to minimize the number of things your puppy can bite at. A true Australian Labradoodle coat should not require more than an occasional trim and weekly brushing, making them an easy care dog for those with disabilities. What Is An Australian Labradoodle? Most breeds originated for use as hunters, herders, guard dogs or draft animals, and breed traits were selected for that purpose. Australian labradoodles bear the distinction of being a breed created to be companions and helpers to people. This is due, in part, to generations of selection based on temperament and type, and to the infusion of other breeds that contributed to the characteristics now seen in the breed. Australian Labradoodles are characterized first and foremost by temperament. Labradoodles are to be a sweet, friendly, loving intelligent dog void of aggression. The founder of the breed has said that they particularly focused on breeding for excellent temperament and health. Only non dominant males and females were used in their labradoodle breeding program, regardless of what other attributes they may have possessed… generations of this kind of selection has now consistently produced a sweet natured, friendly dog. Labradoodles are a solid bodied dog, sturdy in type, with a non shed coat. Many F1 labradoodles will shed to some degree though generally less than a pure lab or other hair coated dog and some will not. By the third generation F2 x F2 , both body type and coat type will be more predictable, depending on the individual dogs selected in the breeding program. Labradoodle Breed History The first recorded purposeful breeding of a lab to a poodle was done in by Wally Conran, who was working for the Royal Guide Dog Association. He was named Sultan and successfully competed his training as a service dog. Although the lab x poodle program at the Royal Guide Dog Association was eventually abandoned, of the 31 puppies bred by the RGDA, 29 of them passed the qualifications to be service dogs, demonstrating the wonderful potential of the early labradoodle breedings. It should also be mentioned that the sires and dams of these 29 labradoodle puppies were in the breeding program of the guide dog association because of their attributes of intelligence, trainability, willingness and loyalty. After the RGDA abandoned the breeding program, likely because of the lack of consistency regarding non-shed coats and non-allergenic characteristics in the lower generations, Angela Cunningham, founder of Tegan Park Breeding and Research Centre, took up the challenge. Purchasing dogs from the guide dog association as well as various crosses from another dog breeder named Don Evans, she began to build a breed type. Other breeds were infused to achieve the vision of what she believed a labradoodle should be and then bred back into existing lines to create the Australian Labradoodle as we know it today. Labradoodles are a smart breed and need stimulation, attention and some grooming. They will not suit a family or person where they are kenneled for most of the day or left to their own devices in the house, as left to their own, they may find their own amusements! Labradoodles are NOT a dog that you can leave tied or penned in the back yard. They are a very social breed, learn quickly and want to be with their people as a part of the family. They will need brushing once a week, a light trim every two or three months and baths occasionally. A well bred labradoodle is a pleasure to have around, is remarkably healthy and has an average life span of 12 to 15 years or longer. He is amazing. He is calm yet playful, affectionate, and a total love. Literally nothing phases him. He has been exposed to thunder, fire works, loud mechanical noises, vacuums right up to his crate, umbrellas, and all of the other things people find puppies dislike with no issues. He barked inside of the house for the first time ever two days ago, and it looks like he did so because we had a fox skulking around the house. He prefers to be with us all the time, but has no problem going into his crate when we need him to do so. He is quiet as a mouse from the time we crate him at night until we get him out in the morning typically between pm and 6 am. Training has gone very easily. He has occasional stubborn moments, but for the most part, unless we are working on something brand new or really difficult, we do not need to treat with food any longer as he is extremely responsive to praise and petting. He could not get over how smart and gentle Brady is. Brady is very social, both with people and with other dogs. He goes to puppy play group two days a week and his tail starts wagging the moment the van pulls up at the house to take him there. The biggest training challenges we have had with him came from his desire to meet and greet every person and dog he sees. The last big basic thing that we continue to need to work on is jumping up on new people. If we know someone new is coming to the house, we keep a leash on him and he is getting much better about not jumping. I would say he is 90 percent there. He walks beautifully on a leash until we are about fifty feet from returning to our house, then he gets the zoomies and either pulls or tries to grab the leash. We generally stop and put him into sit, down for few seconds, then resume the walk. Normally we only have to do that once. I had no idea that a hybrid existed. My interest was peaked with the Bernedoodle, but there was the initial sticker shock for a pup. I tried to find a breeder in the US. Our family was in love with the Bernedoodle. I inquired with every US breeder that I could find. Not one was successfully breeding medium sized dogs. My search returned me to Swiss Ridge Kennels. I was drawn to the effort that Sherry puts into selecting the breeding pair. The US breeders that I had spoken with seemed to lack this forethought. My impression of their process was this: I have a beautiful, affectionate Bernese female and am rolling the dice with a male poodle — he seems like a great guy. After excellent breeding, and a lot of worrying on my part, Molly had her puppies. After fantastic early puppy care, Sherry selected a spirited female for us. Uli is a perfect fit for our active and loudish family. She arrived on her 8th week birthday and shipped from Ontario to Denver. The arrival day was very long for Uli, but you could not tell. The paper in her kennel was dry. When I do it again, I will fly to Sherry and bring the pup home in-cabin. All of the above breeding attributes were evident when we held Uli for the first time. Training is beyond easy. Uli loves to learn and please. Potty training was shockingly a breeze. Uli has the perfect combination of Berner and Poodle traits. She immediately adapted to each family member in a unique way. She must be a dog genius and is the perfect amount of spunk. He is very intelligent which is both a plus and a minus. On the plus side he was basically house trained from the time he walked in the door. We have to think very hard to remember him having an accident in the house. He was very easy to train. In each of the 3 or 4 training classes we attended he was always in the running for the best dog in the class. On the negative side if you are not consistent and develop your role as the leader of the pack you will quickly find that he starts training you. We have never had any issues of aggression towards humans or other animals since we have had him. In fact he at times can be overly friendly and become over excited when greating someone new. He is definitely a conversation piece. We have not met a person yet who in not immediately smitten by him and wants to take him home. We were in Hilton Head last March and walking the beach or in town we were constantly stopped by everyone wanting to pat him and find out more about him. Sherry at Swiss Ridge is great. With the help of a local trainer, and a quick education in being the leader of my pack, Raglan and Sula were a dream come true.
