Once chilled, a puppy has trouble digesting food, and often develops secondary infections and pneumonia. During this crucial period, they are never left alone. They nurse for short periods and sleep. Mom attends to all bodily functions by licking stimulating them, since their bladders and intestinal tracts are not functioning on their own yet. They are weighed at birth and every day thereafter. Their weights are charted so that we are able to determine everyone is gaining each day. Careful attention is paid to smaller pups to assure they are getting what they need. A primary focus at this stage is the health and happiness of the mother. Selective breeding, love, proper nutrition, and exercise are key ingredients that will help assure that your puppy will be just right for your family. Week Two Puppies have gained between oz. They are moving around more, but are still not able to crawl. They scoot and wiggle about to position themselves for nursing, or pile together if mom is not present. It is time to have nails trimmed for the first time. We are handling them more often- touching feet and gently working and stretching their muscles, and getting them used to the loving human touch. Mom is keeping her pups tidy and clean, and we are keeping the whelping pen and mom the same. Laundry at this point becomes daunting! Mom is wolfing down her high calorie anything and everything her heart desires; cheese, eggs, chicken livers, ice cream, and yummy puppy starter — not to mention treats! Week Three Eyes are beginning to open. All puppies are born with blue eyes. It takes another week before they are able to focus and see clearly. Useable vision is at days. Ears are beginning to open as well; noises startle pups and they are still unable to locate the source of the sound. However, exposure to sudden, loud noises at this time is essential and encouraged, as fear has not yet developed. They are getting stronger and are able to push up onto all fours, but standing is still a scary and very wobbly proposition. This week sees rapid development of motor skills. Puppies are able to move backwards as well as forward, and begin to move around quite a bit more, especially toward the end of week 3. Otherwise, they are problem solving— stimulating their learning ability. They are able to eliminate on their own now, and will be begin to move away from their nest to potty. They are also learning to walk instead of crawl. Week Four Now that the puppies have the use of all their senses, huge strides in development will begin to take place. It is at this crucial point that a breeder, knowledgeable in all aspects of behavioral development, begins increased individual attention. Imprinting is so important; a poorly imprinted puppy will have issues throughout their adult life. Social imprinting, both with other dogs and with humans, is paramount to becoming well adjusted. Handling, cuddling, and picking puppies up is just about the best thing one could wish for- and our friends and neighbors think so too! Early morning coffee with good friends, each with a puppy in their arms, is as good as a day can get. Play-fighting is now the fun thing to do, although mom is watching carefully if they get out of hand. She is also painfully aware that baby teeth are on their way in. Learning to eat solid food is not far behind. This is the time that they graduate from the familiarity of their whelping pen to the puppy room. While we introduce them to their new living space, they all huddle together, usually all in one little bed, looking like a tiny lifeboat filled with wide-eyed survivors in a sea of tile. Soon, curiosity takes over and one or two brave souls will venture out. Within minutes, they are scampering and running and tumbling and skidding into walls and having the times of their lives. They are learning to lap water but seem to think they need to step in it first. Ditto for the food. This is the Curiosity Period weeks. As the puppies are weaned from their mom, they are less apt to depend on her and begin to climb, crawl, taste, and snoop into everything and anything they can. They have very little sense of fear. Now is when a puppy has the lowest fear and the highest acceptance of all things new or scary. It is also the time to approach the puppy with all different ages and types of humans. Wonderful and varied stimuli are important too, to help them build confidence in new situations. If frightened by something now, the pup will bounce back quickly and will still have learned solid coping skills. As we approach week 6, the puppy is leaping ahead with their motor skills and intellect. It becomes increasingly difficult to present more and more intense challenges and complex stimuli; a basket or pasteboard box has long since lost its thrill. More and more research backs up the conclusion that puppies raised in environments lacking challenges, are more likely to develop into fearful, less successful adults. They have all worked hard navigating steps, up and down. Using the pet door took one whole minute to learn the reward was huge. However what they learn at this stage is imprinted and permanent. At the end of week 7, all appropriate vaccinations are given, micro chipping, veterinary health checks with Dr. Wolf and Dr. Dragon, and a final review of the health and well-being of the puppy. Puppies are beginning to sleep through the night- if you consider morning to be at 5 AM. They are awake and ready to potty- hurry and get the door open! At this stage, we feel they are more receptive to individual attention and training objectives such as crate training, housebreaking, and more extensive socialization. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Building a trustworthy, capable, vigorous, and beastly Olde English Bulldogge is my lifestyle. My breeding program permeates my entire life and gives me purpose. Take a look around my site to see the Evolution Bulldogge difference. This is my story. The giant bulldog in the cartoons had a magnificent head, colossal chest, low, broad, heavy, and muscular body! Immediately Bulldogs became a massive fascination for me. The cartoons with bulldogs were by far my favorite. I would become a very excited kiddo each time a bulldog made a television appearance. This fascination grew into an obsession. Unfortunately, my first introduction to a real bulldog was a disappointment mixed with a strange sense of enthusiasm. My friend Mikey had a female English Bulldog at his house. She was tiny, chunky, super cute, and snorty. He showed me that when he nudged her chest with his shoe, she would grip it and snarl in rough play. Her bully mind was incredible, but her body was lacking. I really thought bulldogs were going to be how television portrayed them to children. There had to be something better. I was fifteen years old when I met Mr. Jack, an over-sized English Bulldog stud. I spent hours playing and wrestling around with him. He was a great bulldog, and he was reasonably similar to my giant cartoon bulldog dream. Unfortunately, he was not quite the icon of health or vigor I had hoped for, but I was completely hooked. I made a clear decision. I would become the greatest bulldog breeder in the world. My parents, however, put my dream as a bulldog breeder on hold. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. Dog after dog failed health and temperament tests. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Nevertheless, I searched tirelessly for Olde Bulldogges that would put me within reach of my ultimate goal of a bigger, better bulldog. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching. With a few tastes here and there of what could be, I eventually stumbled upon a few exceptional dogs. As dogs finally started passing health testing, I could move forward. This small handful of quality dogs would lay the foundation for a solid breeding program. I began linebreeding my productions to make great family companion bulldogs that excel at protection.
