Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. However, they are also probably the most energy intensive on this list, too. German Shepherds need frequent long walks. If you live in a city or built-up urban area, start planning out a route and get ready to go out for at least a couple of hours each time. Over half a million are registered pets around the nation and with good reason: they are loyal, devoted, deeply people-orientated and love to please. Labradors are another extremely capable breed. Originally bred in Newfoundland, Canada to help fishermen catch fish and haul in their nets, they are not only highly intelligent, but strong and agile, too. Their love of people means they make great carers and have for a long time been the number one breed to be trained to assist the handicapped and the elderly. Once upon a time, after discovering the complex tasks the Newfoundland Labradors were capable of, we brought the breed back to England and trained them as gun dogs. However, while some still harbour lots of energy, it can be whether or not you adopt a Labrador that wants to go out running all day, or one that simply prefers to lie next to you on the sofa and have their belly rubbed. Either way, you can expect to be buying a lot of toys to keep their mind and body busy. You will also need a large garden or natural area for them to burn off energy when they feel the need this is one of the reasons the UK is seeing a rise in smaller dogs, like the cocker spaniel and the pug, in built-up areas. Labradors love love love to eat, so as a pet owner, you will need to be more strict than usual about keeping your four-legged friend on a healthy diet with food that is suitable to their breed, size and age find suitable and healthy food for your dog here. Labradors are especially prone to weight gain and are one of the most common breeds to become obese; which is compounded further if they do not get enough exercise. Another working gun dog turned family pet, the golden retriever is another enormously trainable breed capable of learning a huge array of commands, of understanding subtle movements and gestures, and their years as working dogs has seen them develop highly energetic and agile bodies to be able to run, play and perform intelligent skills for hours on end. The one thing they are not is a guard dog! Golden Retrievers, much like Labradors, are so friendly, welcoming and tolerable, that any trespassing thieves or unwanted visitors are more likely to be taken by the hand and given a tour of the house rather than being scared away. Of course, this is because they are one of the most loyal, loving and highly-tolerant dog breeds around, meaning they make outstandingly trustworthy family pets. While this is endearing, they are big and strong, too, so if you do have kids in the house, the occasional bump might happen when your oversized puppy gets excited which will be a lot of the time. Like the Labrador, they need a large space to run around in, care and personal attention, and they like to eat a lot. Restrict their food to regular meal times and you can even improve their diet with grain-free food if they show signs of allergies. Anyone who has ever owned an English Springer Spaniel can tell you just how accurate the breed name represents their behaviour: they love to bounce around all over the place! They were bred for two reasons: to listen and learn from their human masters; and to hunt and retrieve. For this reason, owners should make sure they secure their home with well-built, high fences. English Springers will jump high and dig deep if it means running after something. Like the other dog breeds on this list, they are enormously energetic and require more than two hours of exercise per day at least. They tend to get on very well with almost anyone and you may often find your dog will run off after their ball, catch it, then take it to a complete stranger so they can join in on the fun. That being said, they will always recognise those closest to them and remain loyal to them. Again, English Springer Spaniels need mental stimulation as well as physical stimulation, and they love to use their nose to sniff out toys and treats. They have loving, friendly natures, will watch you closely to learn new skills and behaviours to please you, and are often in want of a cuddle. As such, they make great therapy dogs, too. Honourable Mentions While the 5 breeds above are the most intelligent dog types as voted for by the UK public, there are many other highly trainable, loyal and intelligent canines. Here are just some of the best of the rest: Irish Setter Like the other gun dogs listed above, Irish Setters are beautiful breeds who are exceptionally loyal and loving, highly intelligent and extremely playful. They hate being left alone and are especially prone to separation anxiety, so only adopt this breed if you can commit to being with them or making arrangements for him or her to always be in the company of someone they love to be around. They are highly intelligent. The problem is that they know it—oh boy, do they know it! These efficient hunting dogs were bred to chase down prey no matter the cost, which means relentlessly chewing, digging and jumping until they have obtained their prize; even if there is a sofa or a garden gate in the way. Jack Russell Terriers are master escape artists, helped by their small size. In effect, the human race has bred the canine equivalent of Houdini—if Houdini was noisy and had a short attention span. Just prepare to develop a lot of patience before you begin any training. Shetland Sheepdog Much like Border Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs are intelligent and trainable dogs with a lot of energy and devotion to their humans. They are especially responsive to commands and so capable of performing complex skills. That being said, they are still very playful and friendly with people and other dogs of all ages. English Cocker Spaniel English Cocker Spaniels are the fifth most popular breed throughout the whole country , registered as pets because they have such a wonderful demeanour. English Cocker Spaniels are very intelligent and can be taught a number of skills and tricks, but require patience, as their puppy-like demeanour means they often get distracted if they think you or someone nearby is about to play with them. They are highly adaptable to living in apartments and excellent for first-time owners. If you make a mistake or maybe get a little too cross with your canine friend, try not to worry — the English Cocker Spaniel will forgive you quickly. Like Jack Russells, Border Terriers are incredibly intelligent, but often too interested in doing their own thing to want to sit still for long. Generally, they are easy to maintain and keep healthy, provided you watch their diet as they have a tendency to gain weight quickly. Regions with high populations of intelligent dogs Where are they? After all, these are the types bred to be attentive to commands, loyal to their owners and to be out in the fields or harbours for hours on end without getting distracted. And while those of us that live in built-up towns, cities and other urban areas have adopted to life where technology assists our every need, in rural areas, these dog breeds continue to fulfil their traditional roles as helpers and workers. Moreover, keeping a highly intelligent, energetic and sociable pet cooped up in a city apartment all day on its own is a recipe for disaster. Consequently, while smaller, milder dog breeds are more popular in densely populated places, the countryside continues to be dominated by larger, working dog breeds. So, while Labradors and Golden Retrievers, known family-friendly pets, continue to be popular in just about every region of the UK the latter lesser so simply because the breed has longer hair that is more likely to shed regularly , the other breeds are most prevalent in the countryside. The English Springer Spaniel, for example, appears in the top 5 breeds in every region in the UK, including Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, except in the South East where it is still in the top 10 and London where it is outside the top .The German Shepherd seems to be the only exception to the rule. While they consistently appear in the top 10 popular breeds in most regions of the UK, not only are they unusually popular in the Greater London Area, but they also appear to be far less popular in Wales than anywhere else.
