Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Tiny bits of food, other fine debris, and moisture often due to splashes when a Pug drinks water easily get trapped in the wrinkles. If the wrinkles are not regularly cleaned, they can start to smell funky, become irritated red inflamed areas and usually lots of itching and can develop skin infections. Simply cleaning the wrinkles during baths is not enough. At an absolute minimum, a Pug's wrinkles should be cleaned 3 times per week and ideally you will want to do this every day, up to 3 times per day after each meal. It only takes a few moments and plays a huge role in keeping the wrinkles free of odor, itching, and infections. How to Clean a Pug's Wrinkles Don't wait until you see foreign matter; get into a schedule of cleaning the wrinkles. Many owners find that doing this after each meal is a good way to remember this important grooming task. Options include a grooming wipe like Earthbath Facial Wipes for Dogs. These are gentle hypoallergenic pre-moistened cloths that are great for the wrinkle's sensitive skin with both aloe vera and vitamin E. If your Pug is prone to chronic wrinkle irritation or infections, it can help to use a balm or cream that creates a water-repellent barrier to keep moisture and debris from coming into contact with the skin. Signs and symptoms of wrinkle infections: Odor - This is a top sign. There may be an odd musty-type smell. Itching - A Pug may paw at his face or rub his face into surfaces like carpeting or pillows. Discharge - Though not always present, untreated infections can produce a discharge that is often clear or white. Treatment, at home: Many cases of acute wrinkle infections can be successfully treated at home using an anti-fungal and antibacterial medicated wipe. The combination of chlorhexidine gluconate and ketoconazole are typically very effective for this. The affected areas should be wiped 2 to 3 times per day for 1 week and then once per day for the second week. Discard each wipe afterward; do not re-use these. Treatment, veterinary: For stubborn infections that do not respond to at-home treatment or in the case of chronic reoccurring infections, veterinary treatment will consist of a visual inspection and a sample taken via a swab that is examined under a microscope to determine the exact cause.
