She was found abandoned and alone with no water or food. She had parasites of every kind, including Sarcoptic Mange — highly contagious to other animals and to people. She was terrified… Abandoned and sick, uncared for puppies like Kenny and Nita who where undernourished, had a very high parasite load, and whose small bodies were starved for nutrition, found themselves in the shelter with a triple whammy. They were literally filled with parasites, they were boney and congested and had no other options beside rescue. She was 4 months old but the size of a 2 month old puppy, she was starved and in terrible condition. She was also in pain and having trouble… Samantha was a 3 month old puppy who was callously discarded like trash. Dumped in a shopping center, she watched her family drive away. You make it seem like puppy ownership is as simple and trouble-free as the world presented in cute puppy pictures. We can all agree that, at birth, all puppies are too adorable for words. Walker, a missionary to China, and his mother. What is Boxer? At first glance, Boxer may look like a dog, perhaps with the scales of a dragon and the hooves of a goat. Boxer is most likely a qilin pronounced chee-lin or ki-rin , a mythical Chinese creature with a lion-like stance, a unicorn-like horn, and deer or ox hooves from the Qing Dynasty .During this period, qilin were often represented with a dragon head, fish scales, ox hooves and a lion's tail. Qilin are good omens, said to bring wisdom and prosperity to whomever they watch over. Through the years, Boxer has stood as a beloved symbol of the Pacific community and an embodiment of cultural diversity. That year, students voted in favor of replacing the original school mascot, Benny Badger, with Boxer. Many felt that Boxer was a better representation of the university. Gone But Not Forgotten The original Boxer statue went missing in after the last-ever Boxer Toss, a spirited tradition that began around .The Boxer Toss was the traditional way in which one group of students passed on possession of the statue to another group. Groups battled for possession of the statue in good-natured scrimmages that sometimes resulted in bumps and bruises. After a Boxer Toss, the statue was hidden for stretches of time, sometimes years. In , the Blue Key Honor Fraternity published a history of Boxer pdf that detailed various Boxer Tosses and struggles for possession of the mascot. As Boxer was passed around the student body during Tosses, pieces of the statue often ended up in different places. But the mascot was mended many times. His plume tail was amputated in a bout years ago and is being passed among the alumni. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, Boxer always gets back together again. A few flashes took place with that statue, but it too has since gone missing. Boxer Spirit Endures Over the years, a few pieces of the original statue have been recovered , often with the help of alumni. The tail, which went missing before the rest of the statue vanished in , was returned home to Pacific by an alumnus in .It is the largest piece recovered to date. An ear and hoof were also recovered. Perhaps with the help of alumni and students, the rest of Boxer will eventually come home to Pacific. In , Pacific dedicated a large replica of Boxer. The foot-tall sculpture was made by a local artist from recycled metal. Working with the artist who created the Boxer II statue — and with significantly more historical data, including photos and pieces of the original statue — the university commissioned a new incarnation of the statue, which will be as close as possible to the original design. Boxer III was funded by the gifts of alumni and friends and debuts at Homecoming .It is meant to be an art piece, kept under lock-and-key, to commemorate the long and stories history of Pacific's unique mascot. About a year or so later we decided to get a second boxer. We adopted her from NorCal Boxer Rescue. The whole experience of finding her and bringing her into the home was just wonderful. She was just a little love bug. But…she was very dog reactive. So she got along with her brother but pretty much, that was it. So I started trying to come up with a way that I could incorporate helping rescue into my work. I started to get a lot of comments from boxer lovers about the dogs, aka Management. And that quickly transitioned to doing paintings with boxers. And as those grew in popularity, I started reaching out to rescues about donating part of my shop proceeds each month. I started offering custom work to rescues for people that donated over certain amounts to the rescue. That seemed to be more enticing. I remember thinking oh, wow! My goal is to continue to beat my totals each year. And to try and get more artists involved in our rescue auction in September. We have a large selection of unique boxer art in our shop. Our Browns tend to be more "muscular" than what you would typically see at a dog show and for sure have loads more boning than the average chicken boned poodle you may meet. This is because our Browns are Working Dogs, and must be physically capable to work. This is very difficult to have achieved and took years to develop. Our pups "may" get a sprinkle of grey hairs through their coat as they mature, and may even lighten on their muzzle or tail area when they age. There really is no guarantee on colour. We do have the darkest browns, with substance, that you will find in the "world". Temperament : Our Browns are sweet natured and calm. All our poodles have calm laid back temperament. NO anxious, hyper pacing or barking. Our Browns love to be with you in the same room or on the couch beside you cuddling during a movie. I use my browns as my jogging partners as they are taller and able to do 6km with a good pace with me without any stress or strain and they actually look forward to it and enjoy the activity. Browns and all poodles will actually do any activity that pleases you as that is just the breed's nature. Our Browns are the darkest browns you will find in the world!! Well we don't, and thanks to our Foster homes, helping us out you don't have to either! Our Quest for brown was a long one. We bought and re-homed many in our search for a dark brown that was calm and laid back, that would produce puppies we would be proud of, and know that we could in good faith, place in pet, obedience and therapy homes. There was no way I would produce unhealthy, or hyper brown poodles, so our standards were very high. This cost us financially, emotionally, and took many years. I could not find browns like what I wanted to own, or produce so I waited and kept searching for over 5 years. I can also only house "3" Standard Poodles, so it made the journey even more difficult. We are 5-month-old Standard Poodles weighing about lbs. While I love to play with my foster siblings, I really just want calm space to hang out with my humans and other fur friends. I wake and jump into bed to give my foster parents good morning snuggles! I enjoy a light morning snack and spend the rest of the day napping and hanging out with the humans while they work. After work, all bets are off, and I make sure to get all the puppy zoomies out. My leash training is going well, but I often try to chase the leaves and get distracted by unfamiliar sights and smells. I love to go outside to play, chew on a stick or take a walk. I also enjoy down time with humans to cuddle and get lots of belly rubs. I start my day at am, go potty, then breakfast. After I like going outside to chase squirrels and play. I then have dinner around pm and in my crate by 10pm for bed. I love learning tricks and am very food motivated! I also like to try and outsmart my foster parents when they hide my treats or sticks, I bring inside. I am very curious and love to explore, play, eat, and cuddle. Now that I am older, I can make it through the night without any potty accidents but I need to go outside as soon as I am up, usually around 7am. I eat breakfast then it's right back outside for my next potty break! I like to have a chew bone and play for a while, then naps. I like to sit on the couch next to my foster mom, or lay on my back sprawled out on the floor. I love going for walks and am learning to not pull. I bark a little at other dogs but I am very dog and people friendly. Nights are pretty low key, I may play a little before bed time, where I prefer to sleep next to my foster parent's bed. I love to cuddle if you'll allow me up too! Since I am still a puppy, I need reinforcements with potty training, proper leash walking, and learning what and what not to chew on. One of the most important tasks I do is with families of primary school aged children, because at this age children can be erratic, lively and noisy. So no matter how much you like the puppy's sweet eyes, their cute paws etc.Instead I want your children to clap, make a noise, sing a song, run up and down the garden. The only time sex of a puppy comes into forefront is if the home have an existing dog and we need to choose on the sex that best fits. Occasionally I will see a puppy in the litter who is exceptionally bright, a natural problem solver and very active. This puppy will not suit a less confident, first time dog owning home, but the puppy would suit an experienced home, or a motor-homing family, an active home or someone who wants to be involved with agility and advanced training classes. If I have a puppy that is quiet and seeks people contact over dog interaction, then this pup would suit a first time owning home, a calm family, but not one with other dogs or lively children. I do advise my new families on temperament and potential suitability of each litter, plus my recommendations for particular puppies with the reasons why. The final choice being with the new family unless I see a reason why not due to temperament match. I never reserve puppies on colour and sex, it is the temperament and suitability between puppy and the new home that is my top priority. If it ever occurs that a puppy is to be kept back as a breeding potential then the breeder will always have first choice across the litter. One issue with every single litter is that the homes who are on the final day to choose become stressed. They feel that they may not get the best puppy; that they will get the wrong puppy, the temperament will not be suitable, the puppy will have one eye and three legs. Absolute rubbish. Puppies have different temperaments and so are suitable for different homes. As a breeder I am constantly amazed how my top puppy is usually last or second last to be chosen, or the puppy that was nearly picked first is then last to be allocated. All my puppies are healthy, they are strong, they are well raised, they are bomb proof and are exceptionally well socialised. At every single puppy choosing weekend over the last 10years I have had homes say, I wish I was further down the list to choose because it's so hard being first as all the pups are great. Human nature never want to have the last of anything.What appeals to one home, will not appeal to another. The reason why most breeders allocate is so they do not have to deal with a home thinking they had the last puppy and managing expectation emails, plus they do not have full weekends of people coming through their home to choose pups. It's breeder convenience first and foremost. Once pups have been chosen, I will then microchip the pups in the next few days. Then at 7 weeks old they have their vet check and 1st vaccination. A pup that is interested in human interaction but is a little slower to approach may prove to be a more reserved dog. There are other simple techniques you can employ when meeting a litter of pups. Make a strange sound such as whistling or jingling your keys and see which pups respond with curiosity. Again, this would be a marker of a confident dog who will be outgoing and eager to participate in training. Independence is another trait to keep an eye out for. Also, any pet owner should be aware of doodle separation anxiety symptoms. Some people want a dog who can enjoy some time in the backyard by themselves. Others are looking for a shadow — those looking for an emotional support animal often want a dog that scores very high on affection and low on independence. Let me define and give a brief description of each… Crate Training: Confinement And Supervision The first method of house training makes use of a crate and a constant mix of supervision and confinement. Our favorite is the Midwest Life Stages Crate. We bought one for Linus over 14 years ago an still use the exact same crate today. Using a crate during house training works so well because dogs have a natural instinct not to soil their dens, to keep the place that they sleep free of feces and urine. This teaches and encourages your puppy to learn how to control their bowels and bladder. So by supervising your puppy when they are outside the crate and taking them to their toilet spot when they need to go, and crating them when you cannot supervise them, a puppy never gets a chance to make a mistake by toileting in the wrong place. Paper Training: Starting Inside Then Moving Outside With this method, the idea is to train your puppy to toilet on papers or specially manufactured pads inside your home. Once they are consistent with this, you begin to move the pads or paper closer to a door to the outside, and then place similar pads or paper outside for them to use before eventually completely removing the pads from inside the home unless indoor training of course. This works well because a puppy very quickly learns to potty only ever on the paper or pads and they are always accessible in the home. Also, Puppy pads are steeped in a specially formulated scent that strongly encourages a puppy to toilet on these and not on the floor or other places in your home. However, the biggest disadvantage to this method is initially your puppy will have learnt that toileting indoors is acceptable behavior. So if your end goal is to train your dog to only ever toilet outside, the house training process will take far longer with this method. Constant supervision This method is exactly what it sounds like and is simply where you constantly supervise your puppy. You must never allow any accidents to happen inside the home or your training can suffer a set back. As this method requires nothing but your attention and speed of action, this is the cheapest of all options as you need no crate, no pads, no nothing. But this method is very time-consuming and takes more effort and concentration than using a crate as you can never let your guard down and allow puppy the chance to make a mistake. Finally we have… Umbilical Cord House Training This method also relies on constant supervision for its success and is exactly what it sounds like: You have your puppy attached to you by looping their leash around the belt on your jeans or trousers. Puppy will be right by your side so you can correct any mistakes and take them to the right spot every time. This is also a very good alternative method to use for those who would prefer not to crate or confine their dogs at all. But so you know what to expect, here a few universal truths that apply to house training: Very young puppies have very little control over their bowels and bladder. The larger the breed, the quicker the control comes. For a Labrador, you cannot expect them to have any control until 12 weeks of age, for smaller and toy breeds, this could be as much as 16 weeks old. Start house training the minute you get your puppy home. Do not delay. This will pay dividends in the long run. Some puppies learn quicker than others. This is normal. Even when a puppy can control their bladder and bowels, they cannot hold it for long. Frequent toilet trips are essential! Continue with the house training plan and it will stick eventually. You cannot expect any puppy to be fully house trained before 6 months of age. With proper house training, expect your puppy to be fully house trained by 6 to 7 months of age. By fully house trained, I mean you can completely trust them and will never see any more accidents going forward. As long as you follow the advice given throughout the many parts of this guide, from 16 weeks onwards accidents will be rare. With a decade or more of love to come. The generally accepted rule of thumb written in most books and articles is: A puppy can hold their bladder for A MAXIMUM of one hour for each month of their age So a 2 month old puppy can hold it for 2 hours, a 3 month old puppy can hold it for 3 hours, etc. After this time period, an accident is all but guaranteed. However, I have some bones to pick with this rule myself… All puppies are different. Generally speaking, the bigger the puppy, the longer they can hold it. Not all are the same and bladder control varies too wildly to use a rule like this. Outside of a crate and roaming around with you in the home, I would say: A puppy can hold their bladder for 30 to 45 minutes max at 2 months old. Use this as a rule of thumb and you will be closer to reality. But if you follow my guide, you will see in article 6 that we will be keeping a diary and forming schedules so there will be no guess-work needed. Certainly far less than during the day! A puppy at 8 weeks old should be able to last between 4 and 5 hours, varying from puppy to puppy. Over the next few weeks, the time they can last through the night will lengthen and lengthen until at 16 weeks a puppy will be able to last a 7 hour night without you having to take them to their bathroom spot for relief. Though many will reach this point at any time between 10 and 16 weeks. Some puppies need to go immediately after eating or drinking, while others cannot go until a full half hour later. What you can rely on though is that after eating or drinking, all puppies will need to go very shortly after. As a general rule, all puppies should be taken to their bathroom spot: First thing in the morning when you rise. Just before the last person in the house goes to sleep. Immediately after the puppy wakes up. This is after any nap, at any time of day. Within the first half an hour after eating. Within the first 15 minutes after drinking. After play or experiencing any form of excitement such as a visitor saying hello. And because, like us, puppies and dogs need to go often throughout a day, You also want to take them to their bathroom spot on a schedule such as the following: 8 weeks old — take them to their bathroom spot every 30 minutes. Common ailments such as urinary tract infection, gastroenteritis and many medical problems affecting internal organs and the genitalia can cause a dog to toilet much more frequently than they usually would. So have your puppy or dog checked, and if further down the road they start to have accidents you cannot explain, have them checked again. It may not be their fault. After reading this article you now know what house training is, how long it should take, will have some respect and understanding for the fact a puppy has little bladder and bowel control and know how often and when you need to provide toilet breaks. You should also now have realistic expectations of time-scales, the amount of effort required and exactly what your growing puppy can do at different ages. At first, an 8 week old puppy will relieve themselves without hardly knowing, they cannot help it and yes this is frustrating. But be patient, stay calm, and with consistency and patience eventually your puppy will develop enough control of their little bodies to hold it longer and longer. Create a Puppy Potty Schedule Dogs thrive off routines, including mealtimes, exercise, and potty training! You can set an alarm on your watch or phone to remind you to take your dog outside to his toilet area. Your pup will need to go first thing in the morning, after a meal or drinking, when he wakes from a nap, after playtimes, and before bedtime. Look for clues such as sniffing the floor or carpet, circling, restlessness, becoming overexcited, whining, or making towards the door. This includes whether you catch him in the act or if it happened a while ago. Moreso, the latter, as your dog will have no idea what he is being punished for! This is because dogs have a terrible short-term memory and will forget an event in two minutes. Instead, take him straight outside and reward him with a treat and lots of praise if he finishes off his business. Use Potty Pads as a Temporary Indoor Alternative Potty pads can be handy in extended periods of bad weather or if you live in a high-rise apartment and it takes longer to get outside. They can also be useful when traveling. This is when your Labrador gets so excited he will pee a small amount. It may happen when a family member or friend visits. To prevent this, allow your dog to eliminate before a visitor arrives and ensure visitors make their entrance low-key with no fuss, even ignoring the pup for a few minutes. Dogs will usually grow out of excitement pee by 18 months of age. Be Aware of Submissive Urination This is also common, but your puppy will outgrow it. It occurs when your Labrador wants to show submissive status to a person or another animal. He may squat and urinate during specific situations. To prevent it, avoid yelling and physical punishment, appear less intimidating when approaching, kneel down, and stroke under his chin instead of the top of his head. At first, keep his sleeping area small and then gradually increase the size slowly and methodically. Remove the divider in the crate or make the playpen area larger if you arent using a crate. You can use a crate to your advantage as it helps your pup develop quicker bowel and bladder control. To potty train a Lab puppy with a crate, use the crate as a tool. When the door is closed, your Lab will let you know he needs to eliminate by whining or scratching. He will learn self-control quicker. Crates are great when you cannot fully supervise your puppy and are an ideal way to control his environment. However, you still need to keep a close eye on him and spot the signs when he needs to go. Make it smaller using a divider. He will be less likely to eliminate in a smaller sleeping area. Use dog gates to section off an area of the house. When away from his confinement, tether your pup to you with a long leash and establish a strict potty break schedule. Potty Training Puppies Between Months Old Most puppies are around eight weeks old when they leave their mother and littermates, but occasionally your pup may be a little older when you first bring him home. You may wonder how to potty train an older puppy and whether you should do anything different. Generally speaking, you should follow the same principles as training an 8-week-old Lab. However, a more mature puppy should be able to grasp housebreaking quicker. Time to start potty training your Labrador Puppy Potty training or house training is one of the first things that you will have to focus on after bringing home a Labrador Puppy. However, you must know what to expect when toilet training a Lab puppy, you must be prepared with patience and dedication since house training can be difficult in the beginning. Here are the house-training basics that you will need to follow to train your puppy. House training is done over time, and here is how. You can also take your puppy into your yard if you have one. Teaching your lab puppy go potty in the yard is the best idea since Labradors produce a lot of waste when they are grown. If you live in an apartment you have no other option but to take your Lab outside to evacuate. Lab puppies love to go outside and explore new territories. So for apartment dwellers, the first months of potty training will happen indoors. Puppies can refuse to go potty on surfaces that they are not used to. Positive reinforcement will help your Labrador to go potty in the right place. Limiting the movement of your puppy will make it easier to keep an eye on during this process. Consider using baby gates to close an area of your house. The area must be big enough so that your puppy can move and play inside. It should be close to your yard or the area of your house where you want your Lab to go potty. Also, this area must be easy to clean, you can expect accidents in this part of the potty training. Then take the puppy to the potty place and let it finish there. Do not scare the puppy if you catch it in the act, the goal is to get its attention and let it know that it is not doing the right thing. This is something you must teach your dog. Do it patiently and be consistent with the training and eventually, you will get your Labrador fully house-trained. Use some white vinegar diluted in water or an enzymatic odor remover to thoroughly clean the area. For this period, you might need the following items to begin potty training your Labrador puppy. You can confine him in his nest within a crate , or in your arms. He will be reluctant to wee in either location. If he wets himself, you have waited too long! It takes two You need to go outside with your puppy, and stay out there with him, each time he needs to wee. A tiny puppy is unlikely to empty himself on his own. This especially applies in cold or wet weather. Routines Matter When House Training a Labrador Retriever Based around these practical requirements you can create your own house training routine. For a puppy that needs to wee every half an hour, it will go something like this Take puppy outside to the toilet area and wait with him until he empties himself Bring him indoors and allow him free access to your kitchen for fifteen to twenty minutes Crate or cuddle the puppy until it is thirty minute since his last wee Take the puppy back out to the toilet area If at any time the puppy does not empty himself then confine him for another ten minutes and try again. As soon as he is regularly not needing to wee after thirty minutes you can extend the duration of free access to your kitchen. Provided you stick to these principles and strategies, the house training process, though quite intense for a short while, will pass smoothly. Here are some things you can do to help the process go smoothly. Have the right attitude! Keep your attitude in check to help this process go quickly and smoothly. Have patience! As already stated, potty training can take some time. It may happen, but it is unlikely. Instead, plan for a long haul and then you will be more patient and understanding when mishaps happen. Eating and drinking will trigger a need to go potty, so to avoid accidents, take your puppy out every time they eat or drink. Anything you can do to make going potty a routine will help your dog learn and associate that going outside is where I need to go to go potty. Use a command I know this sounds crazy but using a command can help your dog form an association between the command and going potty. At first this is meaningless to the puppy. And you cannot discipline your puppy for a potty accident in the house that you never saw happen. The solution for this is never let your puppy go unsupervised. This can be exhausting, that is why we suggest using a crate to help. The stern words must be said during the accident or immediately after to have any effect.
