Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. This section is going to look at all of the signs and symptoms of an upset stomach, possible causes and steps that you can take from home to help your Poodle with an upset stomach. IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome In regard to digestive issues, this does not necessarily mean that the issue is IBS irritable bowel syndrome , though it may be and many of the signs and symptoms may make it appear to be. This includes: -Stomach cramps Most canines that are suffering from discomfort will seek out a place to retreat and may not want to be touched. If pain is severe, a dog may snap at his owners even if this is completely out-of-place behavior. A normal, healthy stool will be a consistency that resembles dough; if you were to pick it up, it would stay in one piece yet be pliable. For those Poodles that have chronic stomach upset, there may be a change back and forth from both conditions. In general, a dog should have a health bowel movement 2 to 3 times per day. With many, the act of eating triggers the movement. If your Poodle has 1 or 2 of the above signs, this points to stomach problems, however this does not automatically mean that the puppy or dog has IBS. Quick Changes in Food One of the top causes of stomach upset is a quick change in main meals or the addition of an ingredient usually a snack that was not previously given. If there has recently within 12 hours been a change to what a Poodle has eaten, removing this item from the diet and then treating symptoms as listed ahead usually resolves things. If you wish to switch the main course, do so gradually over the course of 3 to 4 weeks. This is done by starting off with ratio of 'old' to new. Be sure to mix it and blend it together well. Vomiting as Part of Upset Stomach Issues Aside from bloating, gas, mucus, diarrhea and constipation, a Poodle may be struggling with an upset stomach may vomit. Even more than digestion issues, it is throwing up that brings up a red flag to owners that their Poodle is having tummy troubles. Usually, if vomiting is acute - is a one-time occurrence or happens for 1 day - this can often be attributed to a fast moving stomach bug, ingestion of spoiled food or eating when slightly under heat stress. However, if vomiting is chronic - an ongoing problem - it is time to look to triggers so that issues can be resolved more ahead Other Signs of Tummy Issues - Some Poodles may have a moderate to severe upset stomach, but will not actually vomit. However, these Poodles may dry heave, spittle up just a bit of food or have a reluctance to eat as normal - either not eating as often during the day or just nibbling at food and not eating as much as usual. With moderate to severe stomach pain, the cause may be something that needs veterinary care including: Parvo, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, giardia and more. Severe bloating should never be overlooked as it may be Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus commonly known as bloat or killer bloat. It can be fatal if not treated immediately and owners should never second guess their decision to seek vet care immediately since this is a life threatening health condition. This affects Standard Poodles most often, however owners of any variety Poodle should be aware of the possibility. The only exception to this is puppies under 3 months and Toys under 6 months. In cases where it is appropriate to switch to a bland diet to calm the stomach down, the best recipe for upset stomach is the most simple: White rice boiled, plain, no extra seasoning and de-boned, no-skin, white breast chicken meat boiled, plain, no extra seasoning. You will want the ration of rice to chicken to be .Be sure to dice the chicken into very small pieces. This simple but nutritious meal is given for 2 to 3 days, with either a change to home cooked food or a slow, gradual return to regular food. This happens when a Poodle's stomach becomes upset due to being completely empty. Even if you believe that you are feeding your Poodle on a good schedule, the sign of vomiting yellow stomach bile means that it is time to offer smaller, but more frequent meals. Some Poodles simply need to have something in their stomachs most of the time and changing from 2 meals to 3 or adding more snacks but smaller meals can allow the puppy or dog to maintain a healthy weight while keeping the stomach satisfied. A does is even 3 to 5 times per day, 1 to 4 hours apart. Both work to sooth an irritated stomach and intestines. Help for Chronic Upset Stomach The most common reason for a Poodle to have ongoing stomach problems is a food intolerance - which is different than a food allergy. Intolerance to certain ingredients can upset both the stomach and the digestive tract. With this said, even a high quality food may contain an ingredient that triggers stomach problems. If you feel comfortable with what you are feeding your Poodle, you may wish to stay with the brand, but change the variety. For example, lamb to fish or fish to chicken. It is overstated that dogs are allergic to grain, since the majority are not…however if cheap dog food ingredients are ruled out and the main protein source is changed without results, switching to a grain free variety may be just the trick. It's best to take a clear photo or sample to your veterinarian for analysis. Dark dog poop or black poop indicates that the blood has been digested, which means it is coming from the upper digestive tract or stomach. This is called "melena," and the owner may not always know that it is blood because the feces are black and tarry. It is usually bright red if the blood is coming from the large intestine or fissures around the anus. This is called "hematochezia. This can also happen if the dog has emptied its digestive tract and has no actual poop left. Only pooping blood is a definite emergency. Remember, all blood in the poop requires a vet visit. But as severe as this symptom may seem, most conditions that result in bloody feces are treatable. What does it mean if my dog has slimy poop? A little bit of occasional mucus coating dog poop is perfectly normal. After all, the top lining of a dog's intestines is an essential mucosal barrier. But if you see large amounts of sticky poop or slimy stool, there may be digestive issues, particularly if you see blood or diarrhea too. Mucousy dog poop can result from parasites like Giardia or pathogens such as E. So be careful when removing it, as it could be contagious to humans. Make sure to clean the area thoroughly. It can also result from allergies, injuries, or diseases in the gut, pancreas, or gallbladder. Remember, too much fat in the diet can lead to greasy stool and cause health issues such as pancreatitis. What does it mean if my dog has white poop? If your dog has white poop that is dry, hard, and crumbly, it is often the case that there is too much calcium in the diet. This could be because of raw bones, bone meal, or eggshells fed as part of a raw diet. Too much calcium can be a problem for growing puppies, who can be vulnerable to bone and joint disorders if they receive an oversupply of calcium and phosphorus. An excess of these minerals can also cause renal trouble and constipation. So, this may be a factor if your dog is straining to poop. On the other hand, white-flecked dog poop can indicate tapeworm eggs. They look a bit like short rice grains. In this case, your dog needs deworming. If the poop looks white because of mucus or slime, the trouble may be that your dog is struggling to digest something, so you can see our section on slimy poop. Unfortunately, white and gray poop that is greasy can also indicate maldigestion. In this case, the white or gray poop may happen if the liver fails to produce enough bile or if the gallbladder is not functioning correctly. A problem with bile secretion is a serious issue that will need veterinary intervention. What does it mean if my dog has yellow dog poop? Mustard yellow dog poop is usually also a sign of maldigestion, most likely because your dog has a food intolerance. A dog's poop turns brown because of bile. This is made in their liver, stored in the gallbladder, and secreted into the intestines. Most bile is reabsorbed, but the bile that stays in the gut changes the color of the digestive material, from green to yellow to brown. An upset stomach from eating something unusual can cause food to move too fast through the gut and come out yellow. Poop can also change color if your dog is fed food with dyes or too many carrots and sweet potatoes. On its own, yellow poop is not necessarily an emergency. But if the issue persists, you may need to change the diet. Suppose it becomes orange poop or red, or if you begin to see mucus or changes in the consistency. In that case, it is time to go to the vet to look for possible problems with the liver, gallbladder, or digestive tract. What does it mean if my dog has green poop? Green poop is usually a sign that your dog is eating too much grass or plant material. This can mean they're feeling nauseous or have an upset stomach. Pigment in something your dog ate, such as Greenies, can also dye poop green. Like gray or yellow poop, a problem with maldigestion can also cause green poop. For instance, a case of colitis can prevent bile from being reabsorbed and cause green poop. Finally, green poop results from certain poisons like rodenticide in extreme cases. If you suspect your dog has ingested toxins, getting your canine to emergency services as quickly as possible is critical. Why is my dog eating poop? If your dog eats poop, you are not alone. About a quarter of dogs do this at some point, whether they are eating their own poop gross or something else's ick! Even experts do not fully understand the behavior. Mother dogs eating puppy poop seems a natural part of the cleaning instinct. And it may be that puppies learn this from their moms. In fact, puppies eating their own poop, and that of other animals, is quite common. Often, this problem resolves itself by the time puppies are about nine months old. Although it's distasteful, a puppy eating their own poop is not a crisis, so long as everybody in the household is dewormed. But since diseases like parvo are passed through contact with contaminated feces, puppies who eat poop must be kept on a leash and watched closely when out on walks. There could be several reasons for older dogs who still eat poop. It is worth getting your dog checked out for health issues like a deficiency, a problem absorbing nutrients, or conditions like diabetes that may increase hunger. Greedy or hungry dogs in multiple dog households are more likely to eat poop, but much of this behavior may be instinctive. The best measure for this problem is to control your dog's environment. Keep them on a leash near areas like dog parks, and make sure the yard is clean. Limiting a serial poop eater's access to feces is the best way to stop this issue. What if my dog ate cat poop? A dog that eats cat poop is a bit more of a risk. Firstly, eating other animals' feces always places them at risk of catching a severe illness. Although dogs should not be able to catch feline parvo, they are still in danger of zoonotic diseases like toxoplasmosis and other parasites. What's more, a dog eating cat poop out of the litter box may swallow cat litter. Fortunately, cat litter is not toxic, but both clumping and clumping cat litter can cause a blockage in the intestine, or irritate the gut and cause inflammation. Therefore, it's best to keep your cat's litter box out of your dog's reach. Why won't my dog poop? If your dog won't poop you and you're dealing with constipation, there may be several causes. The first thing to look at is a diet. Fiber can be a tricky issue. Some dogs, like those that are overweight or have diabetes, require more of it in their diet. On the other hand, some kinds of fiber are linked to deficiencies of essential nutrients. So look for professional help when addressing your dog's specific fiber needs. In addition, gut health is essential to prevent constipation and hard stool. This means a good balance of effective probiotics and prebiotics. A dog that is not exercising enough might have its gut slow down, making pooping less frequent. If failing to poop goes on for longer than 24 hours, or if other symptoms emerge such as abdominal pain, bloating, bloody stool, hard stool, vomiting, lethargy, or refusal to eat, it is best to see a vet immediately. Causes could range from intestinal blockages to underlying problems like hypothyroidism. Why is my dog pooping in the house suddenly? A dog pooping in the house is usually a result of incomplete house training. In some cases, it may also be because a dog was left inside without access to the outdoors for too long. This is more common with smaller breeds. However, if your dog is usually reliable about not pooping indoors, there may be an underlying problem. Some possibilities are: Stress. Dogs who are stressed or suffer from issues like separation anxiety might defecate or urinate in the house, particularly if you are away. A dog who has contracted a stomach bug or some illness that causes diarrhea might not be able to hold it long enough to get outside. A dog may prefer to poop in the house if there is something outside they want to avoid. This could be rain, storms, cold, or another deterrent, such as being intimidated by other dogs outside. Doggy Dementia: as senior dogs begin to lose brain function, they sometimes become incontinent. Do not punish an old dog, as this is not something they have control over. Instead, invest in measures to help the problem, such as doggy diapers. A grudge. Although this is rare, research suggests dogs can hold a grudge. Occasionally, this can contribute to behavior such as defecating or urinating in an offending person's room. Although this behavior is relatively rare. Final Word: keeping your dog's gut healthy Although it's one of the yuckier aspects of having a dog, dog poop is something we have to deal with. The good news is that feces can tell us a lot about our dog's health and remind us that keeping the GI tract healthy is part of responsible pet parenting. Infectious Diseases Viruses including parvovirus infection , bacteria or parasites worms, etc. Underlying Health Conditions Conditions like immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, liver disease, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and kidney disease can contribute to colon inflammation. Medications Certain medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, might lead to gastrointestinal disturbances. Quick vet action prevents this. Underlying Health Issues: Colitis may signal deeper health problems. Treating the cause is crucial for effective resolution. Cost-Efficient Care: Early treatment can prevent costly hospitalization. Swift action spares both your dog and wallet. Blood and mucus in dog stool. Severe Symptoms: Pets with severe dehydration, poor appetite and other symptoms may be hospitalized for IV fluids and injectable medication. It may take a day or two for them to recover fully. This may not necessarily mean that the new dog food is a big NO, but it may also mean that the transition is not gradual enough. Try giving more days, while drastically reducing the amount of new dog food mix with original. If there is still no improvement in the poop, then stop the new dog food. You can then slowly increase the new portion gradually until it completely replaces the original food. This will require some food elimination to sieve out the culprit ingredient. Environmental — It could be some stressful event like a new family member, change of environment or living conditions. Other types of consumption — It may be because of medication, or consumption of water that is not suitable for drinking. But the symptom can be minor, or it can be the start of something serious. We cannot regret it later when it is too late. Soft, loose stools Loses shape when picked up Poop Meaning — Soft Loose Stools — By Pawmeal If your dog suddenly has soft, loose poop, there are usually 2 questions to ask as a pet owner. It can be due to a sudden switch from feeding kibbles to fresh food. Or brand A kibbles to brand B kibbles. If your dog develops loose stools because of this, it is usually not a bad thing. If the poop is still loose, perhaps an alteration to the diet may be required may not be a wholesale change. The second question to ask is whether your dog has consumed food that its body is not accustomed to. It may be a once-off treat, or something that your dog bit away when no one was watching. This may be difficult to trace, but it is an important process to remember before considering other measures. We also note that some pet owners are worried of soft poop and rather stick to only 1 type of food permanently. We also do not encourage that, because to have a comprehensive and balanced diet over time, dogs need to have more variety in their food intake. Eating with variety helps them develop a stronger, resilient body and reduces allergies risks. If you are worried about soft stools, start small by feeding bit by bit. See if there is any adverse reaction before gradually increasing feeding amounts. However, fret not, as it is quite common for dogs to experience constipation. One of the most common reasons for constipation is due to a predominantly dry kibble diet. There are usually too much dietary fibre present in kibbles and they do not contain any water. Some dry food manufacturing companies even use sawdust to bind kibbles. Here are some of the typical causes for very hard stools: Food related — Dry dog food diets are lacking in moisture and often too high in dietary fibre. Think of yourself eating biscuits a whole day. Your poop next day will also likely to be hard. Not enough water — Your dog probably needs to drink more water or are feeling dehydrated. Try to get your dog to drink more water. It is important to make sure your dog hydrates sufficiently. External body condition — There may be insufficient grooming especially at the back end, which means matted hair near the back side which makes pooing difficult. Habitual reasons — Lazy dogs who do not exercise enough can also pass out hard stools. Same for those who have tendency to self groom excessively, and you can see if the poop contains dog hair. More serious issues — There may be infection in the anal glands, or some hard foreign objects which are stuck in the intestinal tract, such as bones, gravel, or plastic. Poops in large amounts Poop Meaning — Large Amounts Stools — By Pawmeal One of the main reason for large, voluminous amount of poops is due to processed kibbles. Higher carbohydrates and fibre mean more poop. If the body does not absorb the food, they pass out as stool. So if your dog ejects lots of poop frequently, it may mean that it is not absorbing its food fully. In that case, you need to inspect and question the quality of the food. Poop is very smelly Poop Meaning — Smelly Poop — By Pawmeal If you have been feeding kibbles all this while, try to switch to home cooked food for a few meals. Or you can try freeze-dried, raw or dehydrated options. Common issues may be due to an inflamed colon or mild inflammation in the gut. It may also be due to parvovirus or parasites. While it is advisable to be careful, there is usually a good chance that the mucus will clear up after a few rounds of bowel movement a couple of days. If the poop is still the same, please visit your favourite vet. The colour can be fresh red or very dark red. However, the causes can range from relatively minor to very serious. A minor issue will be because the stools are too hard which causes abrasion when it is coming out. Extreme issues will be due to the presence of possible ulcers or tumours. Bring a sample of the blood stained poop if possible too. This will be helpful for further diagnosing! Extra — 8. Coprophagia — My dog is eating its own poop! But if your dog is eating its own poo, it may be due to any of the following: Behavioural — Your dog may be seeking attention, too bored, got inspired by other dogs or think that eating poo is a way to please you. Stressful dogs or dogs who love cleanliness may also display poop-eating actions. Nourishment — There may be a deficiency in certain nutrients like enzymes or trace minerals which makes a dog eat its own poop. It may be trying to replenish its nutrient needs by eating its own poop. Underfeeding may also be another reason that causes this too. More serious diseases like diabetes, thyroid issues can also make your dog extra hungry. These are meant to be considered with caution, and only during the initial discovery of the poop problem. During this period, giving slightly more vegetables or starches is alright, as the purpose is to help cleanse the body and solidify the stools. Feeding bones is also another option. A couple of raw or dehydrated chicken or duck feet or wings do not feed cooked — feed raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried may help. You can also give some pre and probiotics to help with maldigestion, especially diarrhea issues. Continue for a few meals and monitor the condition of the poop for a couple of days. See if the loose stool improves. Give plenty of clean water during this period too. If your dog drinks by itself from the bowl, then it is great. If your dog refuses to drink, you can consider adding some water to his favourite food, or giving some steamed vegetable and meat broth. Our Rara has this problem of not wanting to drink more water. As Rara is on homecooked food diet, we sometimes also add warm water to her food to make it taste like soup spoon. When to call the vet because of diarrhoea, loose stool or constipation? If after more than 2 bowel movements or more than 2 days and the diarrhea or constipation still persists. When the diarrhea or constipation occurs irregularly, especially when your dog recovers and then experiencing the same problem again more than times. This can potentially indicate a presence of worms. When the diarrhea or constipation comes with blood, and lasts more than bowel movements or more than 2 days. If your dog experiences vomiting, fever or behavioural change together with diarrhea or constipation — then you need to consult the vet immediately.
